OTRS Flag

Good afternoon Sven Manguard,

Please request an OTRS-flag becuase your OTRS account may have been created. I have put this to get your attention becuase you have need this to prevent tripping the edit filter. Thanks --Katarighe (Talk) 21:59, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

If my account has been created, no one has informed me about it. I planned on filing for that after the account was processed, which hasn't happened yet. Sven Manguard Wha? 22:03, 22 February 2012 (UTC)
Well, thanks for understanding. Regards --Katarighe (Talk) 22:04, 22 February 2012 (UTC)

Congratulations, Dear Reviewer

If you use the helper-the scripts, you will find the links next to the search box (vector) or as single tabs (monobook). They are named license+ and license-

Hi Ginés90, thanks for your application to be an image reviewer. The application has been removed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can review all kind of image licenses on Commons. Please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

You can also add {{User reviewer}} or {{User trusted}} to your user page if you wish. Thank you for your contributions on Commons! --Ginés90 (talk) 02:09, 24 February 2012 (UTC)

A tip on quick finding an image

There was a deletion request where you couldn't locate a flickr image (sorry, can't quickly locate it). I do it this way: copy a direct link to an image (I prefer a wikipedia copy to a flickr copy because I need a direct link to a jpg/png/etc, not a redirect, and in a wiki you can just click with the right mouse button on the image and select "copy image location"). Paste the link into the Google search window, ignore the first search result and then click "try search by image" line appearing below the search window. I find this way much better than tineye.com. Note though that while Google crawls inside flickr, it is blocked from some large image databases. Cheers. Materialscientist (talk) 03:12, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

I tried a drag and drop Google image search but it didn't come up with any results. Thanks though. Sven Manguard Wha? 03:37, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Drag and drop is an easy alternative, but you have to drag and drop into images.google.com, not www.google.com. You can try, for example, dragging the beer glass just above. Materialscientist (talk) 05:27, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
*rolls eyes* I'm well aware of that. Just because I'm new to Commons dosen't mean that I haven't sunk hundreds of hours of my time into file work on English Wikipedia. My troubles with Commons have been where things don't quite work the same way that they do on English Wikipedia; you all have made some odd choices with templates and such. The basic job, however, I can do. Thank you for your assistance, but I'm not as wet behind the ears as you seem to think I am. Sven Manguard Wha? 06:21, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Ah sorry, I went by this page (found the link, finally :-) and made wrong assumptions because this image shows up immediately in Google image search. My sincere apologies. Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 06:42, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
It still dosen't show for me when I put in a search, which is really odd, since I've used the search to find the specific URLs of other images by the same photographer. That being said, I've got a pretty strange Google setup, leftover from my time in China, but whatever. Sven Manguard Wha? 06:50, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Images with NC

In the moment of the revision a images have available with CC-BY-SA 2.0. Probably the flickr user change the license in the album, view the flickr user uploads. --Ginés90 (talk) 18:38, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

Im sure. Sorry for my english! --Ginés90 (talk) 18:39, 25 February 2012 (UTC)

CTBTO

Good to know! :) I will add {{CTBTO}} to all files after the upload so you do not need to do this manually. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 07:29, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Fantastic! Sven Manguard Wha? 15:48, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Could you PLEASE stop nominating the files for deletion. People are deleting them which complicates my task significantly. Feel free to make a list of files that you think should be deleted and I can make the bot nominate them in bulk for you. I will let you know when the bot is done. The source has lots of files so it takes time to upload them all. -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 22:09, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
Just let me know when all the uploading is done. Sorry about this mate. Sven Manguard Wha? 03:20, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
Sure thing. There are 940 files at source and we have 510 of them here. So 430 more to go. :) -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 13:24, 2 May 2012 (UTC)
We are up to 911 images. So that's 29 more to go provided the 29 files are freely licensed. I am not sure which 29 were not uploaded. Code needs to crawl 911 files so it takes a very long time for it to do a single full run. Just letting you know. :) -- とある白い猫 ちぃ? 18:58, 3 May 2012 (UTC)
I am going to stop the run since the bot seems to be unable to grab the remaining 29 files. These either are not freely licensed or are not valid for some other reason. Also some images (such as the pictures of atomic tests) they claim CC-BY-SA are probably PD as they were probably taken before CTBTO begun to exist. These need to be re-tagged. Also I can assist you with the renaming of files if you'd like me to do that. Just tag em and I will move em. :D
If you find any other stream like this one do let me know :)

Templating WP users

Hi Sven, in relation to en:User_talk:Greyhood#Regarding_File:Rich_cannot_into_Wikipedia.3F.jpg, it is not good to be templating enwp users for acts on Commons, and much less threatening them with being blocked on Wikipedia. English Wikipedia and Commons are two separate entities. Whilst there is much butthurt on enwp, things that editors do on Commons have no bearing on their editing on enwp. Surely you know that? russavia (talk) 07:26, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

He also posted the image on Wikipedia. That's why I templated him for personal attacks. Sven Manguard Wha? 19:45, 3 May 2012 (UTC)

Wow mate

Wow... I love how first you try and delete Eagles FC because it was not "fully-professional" and of course your proven wrong and now you delete the I-League 2nd Division logo. Now how much research did you do? How did you come up with the idea that it is not freely licensed? I can assure you as the uploader that it is certainly licensed freely. --Arsenalkid700 (talk) 10:27, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

I have a hard time believing that any major for-profit entity would release their logo under a free license, and you provided zero documentation stating that it was freely licensed. The burden of proof lies entirely on the uploader, but yes, I did a cursory check and found nothing. Just because something is on the internet does not mean that it is free. An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Sven Manguard, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

SVG: FYI

Hi Commons Maven!

FYI, I asked en:WP user David Eppstein for help with SVG images. Briefly, the Commons uploader made the default uselessly coarse for all of my SVG uploads, all of which used less memory than the least obese PNG files used as thumbnails.

Best,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz  (Discussion) 10:02, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

I regret to inform you that SVGs are outside of my expertise, and as such, I really have no idea what you just said. I hope you get what you're looking for though. Sven Manguard Wha? 21:52, 12 October 2012 (UTC)
David diagnosed the problem. I tried converting from a png file to an svg file. Instead, I should avoid the png stage. (David's en:WP talk page has details.) Thanks again for your thoughts. Cheers,  Kiefer.Wolfowitz  (Discussion) 10:25, 15 October 2012 (UTC)

OTRS

Hello. It was good meeting you at Wikimania. We discussed the work you do with the OTRS queue, and I expressed interest in helping out. Can you tell me more about what that would entail? Jonathunder (talk) 17:21, 18 July 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I still have the note to contact you, but I was planning on addressing it on Friday, as that's the first time I'd have large chunks of time free. However since I failed to do the reasonable thing and actually tell you this before now, I'll make the time now.
The short version is that in order to get OTRS access, you have to apply at this Meta page. At the top of the linked page, there is a box with two links called "General information" and "What OTRS involves". Read those before you apply. The general info page contains a list of queues. My note says that I should be recommending you apply for the 'photosubmission' queue. You should also apply for the 'permissions-commons' queue and the 'info-xx' and 'permissions-xx' queues, substituting 'xx' for the language codes of any languages that you speak at a high level (babel levels 4, 5, or N). In your nomination statement, make sure to mention that you're especially interested in helping out with photosubmissions, and describe your qualifications (i.e. project experiance) related to the queues you're applying for. Assuming you don't have a dark past, you should get at least photosub and permissions-commons, likely more. Drop me a line once you've submitted your application.
Two last notes: First, there's no fixed timeline for this, it's really more of a "Has it been a week and is Keegan doing OTRS application processing today" kind of thing. Second, you're going to have to self-identify to the foundation, since you're dealing with people's personal information.
Cheers/apologies, Sven Manguard Wha? 00:35, 19 July 2012 (UTC)
No apology needed, rather, thank you for the quick reply. It will take me a little time to follow these instructions. Regards. Jonathunder (talk) 20:37, 19 July 2012 (UTC)

Yikes! To be completely honest I always suspected that the original uploader... ahem... struggled with editing Wikipedia, but I hadn't pegged him for a copyvio uploader. Actually I felt his heart was in the right place but that he was struggling with writing in English. Anyways, the user who uploaded it at English Wikipedia is Garvitkamboj. Might want to have a look at File:Manav Rachna College Of Engineering festival.jpg too. Google image said it was clean, but Google image said the other two were clean too (unless... I might have used TinEye...). Sven Manguard Wha? 23:42, 24 July 2012 (UTC)
Commented out notifications. The files look suspicious, finding files on panoramio was easy and the 500px size of the first file above was reason to search it there. Other uploads will not be so easy. Two of them are pre-dated by facebook, no findings for File:Manav Rachna College Of Engineering festival.jpg. --Martin H. (talk) 21:36, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

I don't have any particular objections to the outcome of this, but in the future, please don't close requests before the prescribed two-day period is up (except w:WP:SNOWBALL cases). Cheers, LX (talk, contribs) 18:24, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

File PVVposters.jpg

Hi, I saw you deleted File:PVVposters.jpg as 'derivative work'. From the deletion log, it's not very clear what your precise considerations were. What would this be a derivative work of, and why? Best regards, Pbech (talk) 09:07, 27 August 2012 (UTC)

The subject of the photo seems to be (judging by the name, description, and the composition) the dozen or so identical posters on the wall. Those posters are copyrighted, and taking a photograph of a copyrighted object does not erase copyright (that's the gist of derivative works). Therefore the image as a whole isn't free, and we can't keep it on Commons. Sven Manguard Wha? 15:30, 27 August 2012 (UTC)
'Derivative work of the posters' was what I assumed, but it would have been nice if that were made clear in the deletion log. I think there's some room for debate: is the image mainly depicting the posters or (the man) putting them up? Usage on some articles would suggest the latter, and a 'regular' deletion request would IMO have been more appropriate. On the other hand: the image was not essential on any article, and the person putting up the posters was probably too much off-center to make it a clear-cut case of de minimis usage.
In any case, thanks for taking the time to clarify things! Pbech (talk) 00:00, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
You may have a point. Whether it was eligible for a speedy or should have gone to DR is a toss up. I don't think that the speedy was incorrect but since the file was in use, yeah, a DR might have been a better option. You might want to talk to 1Veertje. He's the one that tagged it for speedy deletion (on 17 August). Sven Manguard Wha? 03:21, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Asking about a Flickr account

Do you have any opinion about this Flickr account? Would you assume that files uploaded by this account are own works by the uploader? --Stefan4 (talk) 20:06, 16 September 2012 (UTC)

There weren't any red flags that would have had me take a closer look upon first sight, however I saw at least three different cameras and two different iPhones (a 3G and a 4), and one set that didn't contain camera data at all. I'm not sure how to call it. You could ask the uploader for clarification, I suppose. Sven Manguard Wha? 20:20, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
Well, I see a few red flags, but wanted to ask you for an opinion first. I noticed that some files from this account have been uploaded to Wikipedia, as seen here, and I wanted to be absolutely certain before deciding if they can be moved to Commons or not.
Compare this with this and also check the maximum resolution available.
As you observed, some photos have no EXIF: [6]
As you also observed, the user has used multiple camera models: [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14] (there might have been more)
What would you say that we should do with files from this account? --Stefan4 (talk) 20:48, 16 September 2012 (UTC)
That first example with the two EXIFs is the clincher. The account cannot be trusted, the files attributed to the account should be placed up for deletion. Sven Manguard Wha? 02:12, 17 September 2012 (UTC)

User:Frank Schulenburg

Hi, Sven Manguard. I was extremely pleased to read your encouraging post while conferring filemover rights to Frank Schulenburg. I hope that you and other admins will also adopt a similar approach in grants rights to people who seem to glued to Commons non-stop. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 04:49, 11 October 2012 (UTC).

It's not that simple. The amount of time spent on the project, whether measured in edits or in some other way, is a rather rudimentary and ineffective gauge of trustworthiness, competence, and effectiveness. While I have no problems giving out rights (assuming INeverCry doesn't beat me to the request, which almost always happens), I pay very little attention to time spent or number of edits made, and give far more weight to the quality of those edits. I've also been known to factor activity on other WMF projects into my decisions, both when it helps and when it hurts users' rights requests. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:20, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

Questionable image

Sven, I wonder if you could advise how to get an image deleted from WikiCommons. The image File:Michael G Wilson on Venice yacht crop.jpg has been questioned previously as not being Michael G Wilson, as it is supposed to be, and it certainly doesn't look like him, as a quick look at the results of a Google images search shows. Not to worry - it's already Commons:Deletion requests/File:Michael G Wilson on Venice yacht crop.jpg been nominated. Cheers - Schrodinger's cat is alive (talk) 08:39, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sven, hope you're well. I recently closed this and this as no consensus/not done. As the admin who temporarily restored these files for viewing, would you mind re-deleting them? Thanks! -FASTILY (TALK) 08:35, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

Wikitravel Shared Migration

Hey man, hope things are going well. So apparently, the WMF is encouraging the community "to help with transferring appropriately licensed files to Wikimedia Commons." Given the apparent lack of interest in a standalone tool, albeit widely advertised at the time, I think I'm simply going to modify my existing tool, Commons:Up!, to support a migration feature. I was thinking of implementing a feature that would download files and file description pages (in the form of txt files) to a user's computer, allow the user to edit the text files with one's favorite text editor, and then provide a feature to upload those files with the modified text. For the record, this is the most straightforward, quick and dirty solution I could think of that could feasibly work. What do you think? -FASTILY (TALK) 20:40, 24 October 2012 (UTC)

Go for it. Please make sure to build an instructions page, as some of the people doing the work aren't going to be familiar with any of the features/quirks of Commons that aren't on WikiTravel Shared. Sven Manguard Wha? 03:04, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
Alright, will do. I'll try to come up with something within the next few weeks or so. I'll keep you posted on how it's going. Regards, FASTILY (TALK) 21:01, 29 October 2012 (UTC)

I REQUEST TO PUT BACK PHOTO YOU HAVE DELETED

I'm wondering why would you delete a photo from this site: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sara_Chafak You claim that there are copyrights to Miss Universe organization. Why an earth would you come up with that? And please show me where is shows that Miss Universe Organization has any copyrights to any of those photos. Just to inform, those photos are taken 1-12 months before Ms. Sara Chafak even participated to Miss Universe 2012. I'm even her acquaintance and I have completely 100% RIGHTS to use those photos, and I hereby request that you will put back the photo what was there already, this is a violations of Wikipedia rules.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Mystrax (talk • contribs)

Before I say anything else, let me make it very clear that I am a volunteer, and I have absolutely no patience for being yelled at. I already have absolutely no interest in helping you, and you had better believe that if you keep yelling, I'm going to just ignore you. However because I am an admin on this project, and ultimately I am accountable for the actions I take with the mop, I will choose to give you a response.
The image that I deleted was a collage of four images, one of which appeared at this website with the label "Finland 2012" (it's the last one in the slideshow). That website is an official website with an "all rights reserved" copyright message at the bottom. Your uploads, several of which I have deleted, contain that image as well as another image that credits in the file name a photographer with a name that does not resemble "Mystrax". In short, it very much looks like you are falsely claiming ownership of other people's work. If you are in fact the owner, you will have to follow the process at COM:OTRS.
