First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

"Eric" from Picasa, http://picasaweb.google.com/gusuyanziwu/2008#5235753072916588370, does not have any copyrights on this image. He just copied it from AP, Associated Press, a professional photo agency. The image is therefore deleted. --Martin H. (talk) 17:12, 19 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio vs No Permission[edit]

Hi Oleola. I noticed you tagged copyvio to the file with the reason that it comes from a source. Well, the uploader "admits" that the image comes from that source, since the uploader provided it in the source field. For this reason, tagging it {{No permission}} would be better. Polska - Węgry[edit]

Cześć. Wiem, że prawie równocześnie wrzucaliśmy te same zdjęcia, szczególnie chodzi mi o zdjęcia Dudki i Błaszczykowskiego. Piszę jednocześnie, bo ja chciałem wszystkie te zdjęcia wrzucić na raz, ale w nocy przy 27 zdjęciach zaciął się ten nowy interface Commons i przeszło tylko pięć zdjęć, resztę dołożyłem rano. Rozumiem, że w efekcie twoje zdjęcie zostało wrzucone de facto wcześniej, ale jak już robiłem kompleksowo cały mecz, tych prawie 30 zdjęć, to pomyślałem, że nie ma co podchodzić do sprawy ambicjonalnie, kto wklei więcej zdjęć i że lepiej by było, gdyby były one ponazywane w jednym formacie. Chodzi mi o to, że dla większej systematyzacji na koću nazwy wrzucam rok i nie używam polskich znaków, bo te na pewno mogą sprawiać problem użytkownikom bez polskiej klawiatury. Co do zdjęć, to są przycinane z tego samego formatu, więc nie ma różnic w ich jakości, a różnice w kadrowaniu są minimalne. Bez sensu jest więc trzymanie obu wersji. Mam nadzieję, że zauważyłeś/łaś (?), że stworzyłem odpowiednią kategorie dla wszystkich zdjęć z tego meczu. Pozdrawiam z nadziejami na jakieś normalne wybrnięcie z tej sytuacji. Dobra, też próbowałem popracować nad kontrastem tych zdjęć, ale widocznie bez wystarczającego skutku. Nie wiem na czym polegać ma przekierowanie na zdjęciach, bo nigdy z takim się nie spotkałem dlatego nie bardzo mogę się do takiej propozycji ustosunkować. Miałem nadzieję na w miarę spójne nazewnictwo, ale skoro o to ma się rozbijać cała sprawa, to lepiej te dwa zdjęcia wyrzucić. ARvєδuι + 19:15, 17 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Oleola, the file 'Azerbaijani female soldiers in Nagorno Karabakh (Azerbaijan).jpg' was tagged as lacking permission, and I was contacted as its uploader and asked to email the explicit permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. I did exactly as I was told. I sent an email with the copyright holder of the photo giving his permission to use this image and his contact information. In spite of that, I logged in to Commons today only to find out that the file was deleted. May I confirm that my email was received and possibly request that the photo is readded? copyvio-tagging[edit]

Hi Oleola, thanks for detecting File:Slipk.jpg as a copyvio. However, when manually tagging suspected copyvios, please write 1=http://..., not source= or url= as the latter prevent display of the allaged source address in the deletion window and unnecessarily increases the work-load for the admins. --Túrelio (talk) 08:41, 15 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Xhaka[edit]

You're unbelievable, i've already discussed this matter since 2014 and I told the fellow user that the owner of his image gave me the premission to upload this image. I spoke with him in Facebook. It's Krenar Hajdini's work and he gave me OK for this image.--Sadsadas (talk) 18 May 2018.
