[1]: No, actually, I didn't specifically mean "unpublished". I think the matter is even clearer for published work. We have no need at all to track down subject-consent issues for images published before 1950. Given the assumption that the subject was at least 18 years old, if they are still alive they are now at least 78. Whatever -- they're semi-nifty graphics (though quite ephemeral, each of interest for only a few days), but they're laid out in a program which seems to be intended for producing slides or report pages, not inline Wikipedia article graphics, and the uploader has done nothing to meaningfully compensate for this, but instead lashes out wildly in all directions and blames everybody but himself when the images don't display well inline in Wikipedia articles. And meanwhile, I see no reason why my user identity should be associated with your string of contumelious epithets in perpetuity by means of Google. AnonMoos (talk) 11:40, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

I have gone by AnonMoos for almost 10 years (almost 15 if you count a previous slightly different spelling before I changed ISP's) so it is not a "throwaway". If you search AnonMoos on Google you get over 20,000 hits, the vast majority of which are as a result of my activities. Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Did you actually submit the edit? I don't see it, and preview works fine for any blacklisted site.

That thing dot ... ach... the way caching works remains obscure to me. The theory is:

1. There's no blacklist check when a template is changed (otherwise thousands of pages would have to be purged and scanned), so a template can be changed after the fact to make a badlink. So for example, if I try to write

• com/(first I have to submit to see if reason prevailed, but I doubt it; censorship seems to stick to tools - indeed, I get their message still, so for now I'll put it in with User:Wnt/Sandbox)

OK - changing the Sandbox to "." it works, but if I recall correctly, this next edit won't save. And indeed it didn't, until I changed it back. Wnt (talk) 16:58, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

So the next thing is, suppose I have a template which evaluates the last time the page was edited, and compares that to the current time. Thus:

http://www.wikipediareview.com/ . Then the page displays a non-standard dot at the moment that it is edited, passing the filter, but changes to a dot immediately afterward. Problem solved. The problem is that I reload the page, and it still doesn't change. But I thought I could fix that by having the currenttime separate in User:Wnt/Templates/dot - then purge that template using [2], to reset the time. It seemed to work in previewing of the original template. This was a less-than-optimal solution, as for a busy page this would have to be purged over and over again to keep the link working, but I suppose it could be posted to 4chan "See my latest rickroll" or something. ;) Or put in an iframe somewhere, if there's somewhere convenient where those are still allowed. Problem is, I purge it, and unlike in the template itself when I looked... nothing happens. I'll guess what goes on is that the purged template is marked to be reevaluated in the template page it's in, but that that template isn't marked for reevaluation (and if it were, it would be like a fresh edit, resetting it to not a dot). So now I'll try a new idea, which is to subst the thing:

But that doesn't work either. So it's not that any template ever gets marked for reevaluation, I guess - the page is simply cached the first time it's edited, and it stays the way it was when you edited it. But wait, no... otherwise the first example I did wouldn't work. I edited the Sandbox template and the page changed. But I purge the template dot and the time it returns doesn't change. Aha... I tried purging a few more times - no proper periods. But then I added "testing" to the noinclude part of the template, and the links become fully clickable. So the point is, purging the template is not the same as editing it, no matter what the docs say. Editing it marks my page displaying it to be reevaluated - purging it only changes the result when I view the template directly. I think this weirdness has confused me more than a few times when trying to understand other templates for more conventional uses! Now to try an authentic edit-save null edit to see what happens. (Note - by submitting this edit, the periods will go back up to their funny position so as to avoid being rejected by the filter) Wnt (talk) 17:19, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

I used w:Inkscape, which is free and not that complicated to use (and I didn't do a very good job with it) - I don't think I'm likely to get around to this anytime soon, especially not for an incremental change in boundaries/identities. Wnt (talk) 00:28, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

@Sj: The "old" version I found was a defective pdf with some rows set the wrong length, which I tried to salvage best as I was able by djvu conversion at File:First Earth Battalion Field Manual.djvu According to the file description at several places where it was available for download, this was the one actually being passed around by U.S. Army officers and used in the course of official duties. There is another that was distributed later on, which I thought may have copyrighted features, and some other extracts online, and I didn't pursue them very far because I was looking for PD material, but you might find them interesting. SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)

In other languages (translate this)

Please use SVG Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that Wikimedia Commons recommends the SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) format for certain types of images? Scalable Vector Graphics are designed to look appropriate at any scale, and SVG images are easier to modify and translate, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. A lot of modern programs support SVG export. If you encountered problems or have questions, don't hesitate to ask me, a member of the Graphic Lab, or the Graphics village pump. Uploading images in SVG format isn't mandatory, but it would help. (To avoid any misunderstandings, please don't just put raster images into an SVG container as embedded raster.)
