Hello, Shyamal!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

File:OsloQueen.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Hi Shyamal/archive4,

thanks for the quick change in the description of File:VeronicaAgrestis.jpg! I changed the category accordingly to Category:Unidentified Veronica and removed the taxonomy dispute banner. Best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 11:48, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing that out. I was merely using an id made by someone else. Shyamal (talk) 14:09, 31 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shyamal, thank you for sharing your video. A technical notice: for the dimension of 1920x1080 pixels the chosen bit rate is very low, so the video is a little bit "blocking". If possible try to transcode with at least 5Mbs and you should notice a significant increasing of quality. For use in wikipedia in the moment the best way is to create a second smaller file (640x320) with lower bit rate (about 1Mbs). At least: the intention of my remark is not to criticize your work but to help you to make commons better. Best wishes, --Pristurus (talk) 15:48, 14 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually I have few tools to deal with the issue. My camera generates MTS which I upload to YouTube to convert to MP4 apart from applying the stabilization and then convert using VLC to ogg. I seem to be losing sound both with VORBIS and FLAC options. Shyamal (talk) 01:06, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It seems transcoding with the actual version of vlc is buggy (see here). Do you use windows? If yes you may apply the deshaker to stabilize your video (it works well for me) without the necessary to load it up to youtube first. Regards, --Pristurus (talk) 09:33, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

HouseCrow.svg[edit]

Hi, Transparencies in File:HouseCrow.svg makes it unusable in colored background (eg:https://plus.google.com/108565986817665580887/posts/8kvmT5ATHRR). Could you fix that (replacing transparent portions with permanent shade)? --Praveen:talk 16:41, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Have changed some alpha values. Maybe better to convert to PNG and use as not all renderers do well with transparency and gradients. Shyamal (talk) 06:27, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! Much problems resolved. Could you check this page: http://ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_Kerala#Corvidae; this same image appearing differently (skewed)! I remember it was okay in the morning, and even now it appears normal in preview mode! Is this because current svg code change?--Praveen:talk 16:10, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your uploads referring to India : Categorisation[edit]

Hi Shyamal, thank you for your uploads of maps relating to the Indian Subcontinent. I kindly ask you to use 'useful' categories and don't over-categorize your images, i.e. please do not categorize your uploads (an example of your recent activity):

Category:Maps of India

You'll help to save time and capacity on commons by categorizing:

Category:Old maps of the Indian Subcontinent and for example Category:1824 maps of India

Please use as far as possible the category of the regarding city/town/village or district (if there's no category) etc., or, a localized better 'fitting' i.e. the 'most fitting"' category(ies). For further information on categories please read Commons:Categories referring to an accurate categorisation, simplifying your further uploads and categorisation in general. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the commons:help desk.

Thank you for your assistance, Roland 13:16, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Sorry, there is no mechanism for me to detect that there was a subcategory called "old maps of India" ... - I tried "maps of India <Year>" etc - if there is a sensible way of category naming, the specific subgroups should add suffixes after the principle category so that the auto-suggest is helpful. As I mention on my user page, the categorization system is pretty much non-scalable and impractical for large-scale contribution. Shyamal (talk) 13:26, 2 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Shyamal, no problem, i remarked that you upload imho very interesting p.e. old maps, that's why i allowed to contact you. Yes, you're right, it's not easy to find the 'most fitting' category, but maybe, let's hope so, in a not so far future the categorisation system will be more 'transparent' and 'logical'. Best regards, Roland 13:33, 2 September 2012 (UTC)

Coordination, organization...[edit]

Hello Shyamal, I am really impressed by your upload work, and do a little bit the same, to a lesser extent. I developed on the French Wikipedia this kind of tables (need this js for links "màj" (="update")). You give it differrent names, url, etc., it gives you a link to upload quickly your images.
I don't know if you're intersted, but my point is primarily elsewhere. In fact, I am wondering if we should not develop a system to tag which job has been done, which is incomplete, etc. Maybe a template to put in Category:Random book on the birds, to indicate all plates has been extracted? For journals, we could list different volumes and issues, to know what is done, what should be done in the future. What do you think about it? Totodu74 (talk) 15:18, 20 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. I think there was something similar being discussed elsewhere by the Biodiversity Heritage Library - see Commons:Biodiversity_Heritage_Library for instance. Shyamal (talk) 03:26, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, interesting project I didn't know, thanks. I take files directly from archive.org, so it's hard to serahc for the BHL link for each file. Do you think I can use  ?
To go back at my first question, what about a template named All plates uploaded ? Totodu74 (talk) 07:27, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Seems feasible with books but not with journals. Things would keep adding as 70 years pass from the death of the artists. I have on my computer a bunch of Bruno Giesler and GE Lodge images waiting for 2014. Shyamal (talk) 13:15, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

 1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
 2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
 3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Yes :) I spent a couple of days preprocessing it and then noticed that after a few uploads and stopped. Anyway, the way I clean up the images is to set the white level based on the palest unpainted paper which makes it look much newer and fresher. Shyamal (talk) 04:53, 18 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request for a picture[edit]

Hi Shyamal, I hope you've heard about the mysterious elephants named Kallana (Malayalam കല്ലാന) in Agasthya hills, Kerala. Although, the animal is so popular, no free picture is available. If possible please create a picture of Kallana.

General Description: Height - Around 5 feet, long trunk and tail (often reach ground), tail has more hair than normal elephants, curved back bone (compared to Indian elephants), more triangular ear, front foot prints are slightly bigger than human hand, back foot prints are slightly smaller. A video footage, news with photo, a Malayalam news with more clearer photo.

Thank you--Praveen:talk 16:18, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it is a fraudulent claim originated by some minor Kerala tabloid that seems to have gotten more traction in the press. Wikipedia should not be trying to propagate this. There is no kallana as a species and at best this might be a slightly underdeveloped individual. That news channel is doing a disservice showing a scale against a photos of unknown provenance. Notice that not even the captive one has a person beside it for scale. Superposing a scale on a video is not a reliable field measurement method. Shyamal (talk) 03:37, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Local Adivasi tribe (Kanis) claim Kallana is real for long time, but officials never acknowledged. But recently (after 2000) there is so many photographs and videos have published, and some went viral. In Kerala, people believe that, Govt. is not courageous enough to find/say the truth, just because it may impose huge environmental and financial responsibility over them. --Praveen:talk 14:54, 23 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This is simply not true. There was a team under Dr Raman Sukumar, who has studied elephants for a while, that did examine the claims some years ago. None of the photos being shown in the media would be acceptable evidence. - http://www.thehindu.com/sci-tech/energy-and-environment/lilliput-jumbos-a-subject-of-debate/article394581.ece http://www.elefantasia.org/spip.php?breve15 Shyamal (talk) 01:52, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Somehow you gave the same two birds, I called Psittacula cyanocephala, both the name Psittacula roseata. My source is linked behind the description - do you have a better reason for your opinion? --Kersti (talk) 19:37, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The two have been lumped in the past - but see what Gould writes - he says that he uses the name rosa only for Burmese birds - which would now be referred under roseata after the split from sensu stricto cyanocephala south of the Himalayas of India. The first set of images is definitely claimed to be from Burma which is out of range for cyanocephala - so it has to be roseata. Thus it is a case of "in part synonymy" / chresonymy which is what the worldbirdinfo page provides. Do check Biswas' discussion on it. I might be mistaken about the first two images but the second pair would definitely refer to roseata. Feel free to take it up on en:WT:BIRD where there may be others with a better informed opinion on this. Shyamal (talk) 02:45, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Indian diving beetle identification[edit]

I would be interested in knowing how you reached the species identification for File:DivingBeetle.jpg. I might be wrong but suspect it was a case of seeing a photo of the famous North American Thermonectus marmoratus and it appearing rather similar. Unfortunately there are several less well known genera with species that are quite similar (Laccophilus, Sandracottus, etc). I'm not aware of any Thermonectus in India (PDF:Catalogue of the diving beetles of India) or anywhere in Asia for that matter. I am unable to provide a specific identification for the beetle but unless you have a very compelling reason for calling it Thermonectus, please consider modifying the description and categories. It is also used widely as Thermonectus in several wikipedias. RN1970 (talk) 21:50, 26 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I had marked it as unidentified and an amateur (from the US) thought it was T. marmoratus, I checked some Indian works and found no sign of marmoratus (that file you linked is more recent) so I left it as a possibly a Thermonectus. Just a guess based on appearance. Will try and see if anyone works on the group in India. Shyamal (talk) 11:51, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shyamal, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

 • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
 • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
 • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

As far as I can tell, the map does indeed indicate the region within the green area. Shyamal (talk) 10:37, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

ml.wiki editathone[edit]

As part of current editathon @ ml.wikipedia, I decided to complete formatting of List of birds of Kerala. Any advice? --Praveen:talk 06:34, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I cannot see the most recent "Birds of Kerala" by Sashikumar, C, Praveen J, MJ Palot & PO Nameer (2011) ISBN 978-81-264-2921-9 cited. If you are in Bangalore, I will be happy to lend you my copy. Shyamal (talk) 13:44, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Although I want to include all birds in this list, I'm not (for now) really going to include most recent sightings. I just planned to elaborate / organize whatever knowledge already included in the page. However, I just included some of those sightings also. If you like, please add non-included species or in the talk page. (Personally I don't want to compromise my anonymity :-))

And also, As part of current WikiSangamotsavam-2013, I wish to invite you to the Wiki Jalayathra where we interested to include those who interested in Biodiversity and nature conversational-ism. So as they can motivate others. Please inform me if you are interested. I hope we may be able to sponsor interested persons as long as they can help wikimedia movements.--Praveen:talk 19:47, 5 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My level of Malayalam only lets me get where I want and eat what I like in Kerala :) - two bird editors with a knowledge of Malayalam are en:User:Dipu_k and en:User:Paintedstork and probably more suitable candidates for your program. Shyamal (talk) 04:00, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pteruthius ripleyi[edit]

Hi Shyamal - nice that you were able to identify File:Unidentified bird -Paharpani, Uttarakhand, India -male-8.jpg as Pteruthius ripleyi; I was left baffled about how to separate this from Pteruthius aeralatus validirostris, which apparently occupies much the same area and looks about the same but differs in song (see comment here, posted in 2010 by one of the authors of the main paper (abstract) on Pteruthius). What do you find the best way to distinguish them on photos, please? I am not familiar with the species, or with more recent identification criteria. Thanks! - MPF (talk) 20:55, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@MPF: I have just run through all the papers on the topic and will be fixing the articles on the en.wiki soon. Part of the problem was an error in the subspecies ranges mentioned on the worldbirdnames site (which claimed that validirostris extended and overlapped with ripleyi) - have just got word from Gill & Donsker that they will fix it. The map in this paper will show that there is only one species in the western Himalayas ripleyi - but validirostris sensu lato has a range in the eastern Himalayas with the borders or overlap zone between the two being unclear. There are plumage differences (Reddy 2008 link given) and call differences and hopefully new research will help. Shyamal (talk) 04:22, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
This File:Pteruthius_flaviscapis.jpg might be an aeralatus validirostris ... darker chestnut tertials. Compare with the type specimen here http://www.lsa.umich.edu/ummz/images/Birds/db_images/190724Da.jpg Shyamal (talk) 06:56, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Oddly, I'd not found any mention of Reddy's paper elsewhere. Also corrected the embarrasing missed link above ;-) Shall I rename File:Pteruthius flaviscapis.jpg as P. aeralatus validirostris, or is it not certain enough for that yet? MPF (talk) 07:56, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Will let you know soon, but can certainly rename to that rather than flaviscapis. I am trying to get the original description of validirostris by Koelz. According to the findings based on molecular biology with the available samples, the two are so widely disparate that they might even overlap in range, ie that the eastern boundary of ripleyi might extend further east. Illustrations from William Beebe's pheasant monograph[edit]

Hi, I noticed that a while ago you uploaded some of the color plates from William Beebe's A Monograph of the Pheasants. I thought I should let you know that I've uploaded the rest of them, and I also added some more information to some of the images that you uploaded. They're all in this category.

I don't think I've forgotten anything, but you're welcome to look through them and make sure you don't think there's anything missing. --Captain Occam (talk) 23:44, 11 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I forget why I stalled there, but wonder if it was some thing to do with the date of death of one of the artists. Shyamal (talk) 02:48, 12 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
