File:Judith Mason11.jpg

As the image summary states "email from Judith Mason's daughter forwarded to Permissions" on 11 December 2008. Judith Mason is a close personal friend and her daughter Petra, who is also her manager, gave permission to use the image in her email. Have Permissions lost the relevant email and why has it taken some 3 years for the penny to drop?

File:Judith Mason10.jpg is my personal photo of Judith Mason and as it states in the summary it is "my own work". In other words I am the author of this file and the template querying this after more than 4 years - "there is no proof that the author of the file agreed to license the file under the given license" - flies in the face of all reason.

Is Commons truely in such an advanced state of disorganisation?

Hi Sarah

Well, I am posting this message in here because I like to talk to real people and not with anonymous. You have used your alternate account, "Missvain" to post that a photo that I took myself personally as it is stated in the page, about a statue called "The Spirit of Audrey" needed the author permissions or other.

I think that I have already discussed the issue a year o more ago with other user/admin; the problem is that the Author John Kennedy has sensibly passed away years ago. Here for your information, http://devorzongallery.com/blog/?p=17. Hope this is enough for you, I kind of busy right now, as I know too that John, would never have a problem by being me the one who uploaded a simple photograph of one of his sculpture in here on in any other place. Please do contact me for any other issue or situation or if you need further clarification.

Sincerely,

John M. Kennedy

If you're going to upload a JPEG with a solid area of bright red, then the "sampling" parameter really needs to be set to 1x1x1, or it's not going to look good... AnonMoos (talk) 01:31, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

I'm not very adept to "photoshop" and so forth I don't even know what "1x1x1" even means in regards to that. The image has been re-designed by a fellow contributor as a tiff, I don't intend on fixing the .jpg version. Thanks for the suggestion, I wish I had more time to develop my image skills. Missvain (talk) 01:33, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

I noticed that my Northwest Computer Club Dec 1977 pg13.jpg newsletter now has an OTRS ticket, 2011112710000229. I uploaded these public domain images and I was wondering what in the ticket. By the way, here is another newsletter issue with my photo from 1978. -- Swtpc6800 (talk) 23:45, 11 January 2012 (UTC)

Boswell OTRS

You added OTRS information to the Boswell images uploaded by User:Mauricecode, but File:Subversioncolor poster.jpg wasn't tagged. I see that it was moved from English Wikipedia to Commons, so maybe that's why you missed it (it's no longer on his Special:ListFiles). I think that File:Subversioncolor poster.jpg also should be tagged with the OTRS statement. --Stefan4 (talk) 19:10, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

I thought I did. I did a lot of work on OTRS yesterday, probably just missed it. I'll add it. Thanks. SarahStierch (talk) 19:12, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

Hello SarahStierch,

why do you think this file is PD [1]? Regards --Rosenzweig τ 17:34, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Because I'm assuming good faith on the uploader. We are still awaiting proof of copyright permission for their other uploads that they submitted OTRS for. :) SarahStierch (talk) 17:38, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I don't quite understand. The uploader tagged this as CC-BY-SA-3.0, not PD. So why should anyone come to the conclusion the image is PD, assuming good faith or not? --Rosenzweig τ 17:46, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Time period of the photograph makes it PD in the United States, and the uploader is not from the US, so they are probably unaware of our copyright law regarding it and how Commons works in regards to such laws. One can easily change the PD by contacting the uploader and explaining the reasoning, I have a feeling this uploader would be much obliged. It'd surprise you how many people are uneducated about copyright law, including Wikimedians! Thanks for dropping by! SarahStierch (talk) 17:48, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
The source country of this image is Spain, not the US. Unlike the US, Spain has no rule that everything pre-1923 is PD, it's strictly 70 years pma there. That it is in the PD in the USA is not enough for Commons, it needs to be in the PD in its source country as well (Commons:Licensing). We can't even be sure it is in the PD in the US, it could be protected for 95 years from the date of publication there (en:Copyright law of Spain#Copyright relations with the United States). But we'd need to know more about the image than we currently do to establish that. --Rosenzweig τ 18:11, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
Ok! Feel free to #SOFIXIT  :) SarahStierch (talk) 18:12, 13 January 2012 (UTC)
I did. --Rosenzweig τ 18:16, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Re: Grant Wikipedia Permission to Publish Article

Dear Sarah Stierch, My apology if this reaches you as a duplication of my email to you. I'm still not sure how the contribution system within Wikimedia works. Sorry to keep pushing, I certainly do not wish to abuse volunteers for their good and useful work. Thanks, Randyl

from Randyl Britten crandylb@gmail.com to Permissions <permissions@wikimedia.org> cc John Marshall <wa7bsr@gmail.com>, Michael Holley <swtpc@comcast.net> date Mon, Jan 23, 2012 at 7:47 PM subject Re: [Ticket#2011112710000229] Grant Wikipedia Permission to Publish Article mailed-by gmail.com hide details 7:47 PM (2 hours ago) Dear Sarah Stierch,

Thank you for your response, however I am puzzled by the fact that I do not see the desired change in the file page. You state, "I have made the necessary modifications to the file page." Is the only change the addition of the ticket number reference? Attempting to follow the ticket number leads to a blind alley at the "Welcome to OTRS" login page where my Wikipedia login does not work. Is Wikipedia still being overprotective even after granting permission to Wikipedia to openly publish "Page 7, "Bringing Up a Scamp", copyrighted article by Randyl Britten"?

My intention was to grant Wikipedia permission to openly publish the article under the CC license. This was intended to be clear from the original subject: "Grant Wikipedia Permission to Publish Article," however it may not have been clear from my original email text. That text was adapted from Wikipedia's template for granting CC copyright permission. My intention was that Wikipedia should replace the line:

'Page 7, "Bringing Up a Scamp", copyrighted article by Randyl Britten'

with the line:

    'File:Northwest_Computer_Club_Dec_1977_pg07.jpg'

with the appropriate link activated. In doing so I assumed Wikipedia already has the 'pg07.jpg' image as uploaded by Michael Holley with his original posting of the Northwest Computer Club Dec 1977 issue. If this is not the case, or not possible for some reason, perhaps it is still possible to prevail on Michael Holley to upload the page 7 image again. Or perhaps John Marshall, who was newsletter editor at the time, I believe, can upload a copy. I do not currently have a copy of the article, "Bringing Up a Scamp," so I am not able to provide it directly to you.

Here's hoping it is still possible to free the Scamp from copyright purgatory. I have added Michael Holley to the cc list. Thank you for your attention, Randyl Britten crandylb@gmail.com - Hide quoted text -

Thanks for uploading File:Arched Frieze with Decorative Heads by John Joseph Earley (1931) SOS! Control IAS 08700019.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hi Sarah, okay let's try it with talking. ;-) You have removed the license again. I do not understand why. The photographer, you, have a copyright for your photo and we need a license for this - otherwise it is not free. If you do not want to restrict the use of this artwork reproduction (the artwork itself may be in the public domain) then please choose {{PD-self}} and/or {{CC-zero}} as "license" for your photo. Do I badly miss something?

hey, sarah, a public art mystery: the w:General Jose de San Martin Memorial; indicates Dedicated October 28, 1925. Rededicated October 6, 1976. per siris [6]; however, the LOC photo indicates dedicated 26 May 1948 [7], looks like judiciary square & the same to me. could siris be mistaken? Interesting. I sent an email with you copied on it to a contact who is on the SIRIS committee. It bounced, which is odd, but, I'll ping her and see what she thinks. Walters cats

Hi Sarah! I'm just starting on the Japanese stuff - nb File:Akiyama Buemon - Tsuki hyakushi - Walters 95348.jpg is a print not a painting. Not easy to tell from their metadata I know; the only indication is that a "publisher" is given. Did you do a lot of these? Johnbod (talk) 14:13, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

No, it's the only one of the Japanese prints that I have done. Thanks for participating in the categorization! Sarah (talk) 14:15, 3 April 2012 (UTC)
Great, thanks. It's a fabulous haul. I've just shunted all the 202 (I hope) prints into Category:Japanese prints in the Walters Art Museum; there's loads more additional cats by period & artist etc that should be done, but I don't think I'll do it. Johnbod (talk) 15:40, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Sarah,

You dealt with the OTRS ticket sent for this DR, however I'm not sure we have a release for commercial use on the ticket, I'd like to have your opinion before closing the DR in keep or delete. --PierreSelim (talk) 22:59, 17 May 2012 (UTC)

File:Ed Lifschitz.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

The file File:Orenstein speaking at regional women's leadership event with Woodhull, Unilever-Dove, Texas.jpg has been copyright tagged by a bot. I can't move it for you until a license is added by the uploader. INeverCry 19:34, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi there. I worked with her at an edit-a-thon in San Francisco and the Upload Wizard wasn't cooperating so she had to upload it through the old form and it didn't work out well. Now wonder the license didn't appear. We uploaded it under CC BY SA 3.0, so I added the copyright tag for her. It's too complex to explain to a new Wikipedia editor how to do all of that(seriously) so, please assume good faith and change the title for her. Thank you so much!!! Sarah (talk) 19:38, 11 August 2012 (UTC)
I've moved it. I had no doubt at all about the file or the request, it's just technically against filemoving policy for me to move a copyright tagged file. :) INeverCry 19:43, 11 August 2012 (UTC)

we need a simplified upload fork of "fair use", and we need to relax the "minimize non-free". now that you're a left coaster do you have any pull? spend some of that treasure built up from the NRHP CA table work? i hope you did that in the spreadsheet and paste in (far easier) i did put in a good word with a siris person at si editathon to give us an export button. Just to say note that I've reverted the change of copyright tag on this one - I've checked back on the website source, and there's no such claim made by the Smithsonian there, just the usual link to the terms of use, warning it may be copyrighted. Hchc2009 (talk) 18:50, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Category:Architecture_in_Hayward,_California has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

pleased to meet ya!

hey, it was great to finally meet you at MCN 2012.

Can I tell you how great my GLAM project is going? Besides being THIS close to sealing the deal on our very own Wikipeidian -in-Residence - please no tweets yet - we're in two foreign language wikipedias already, we had a commons image post to two FB pages (with 11 shares) and to one tumblr blog (oh, just 24,000 people saw that one!!!!!), from Michigan I helped a co-worker in California get a real live Wikipedian to go to her office to give her a hands-on lesson on how the heck to start editing, in the next month, I'll be presenting our project to various department heads at the University of Michigan (and telling them to get their own wikipedians-inResidence, btw) and then we had an article featured on the front page of the en wikipedia in the DYK section. oh, yeah, and we've also uploaded a bunch of images and pdf's, too. I'm feeling pretty good about it all. So sorry to brag, but I'm super excited about all this activity... Bdcousineau (talk) 04:37, 9 November 2012 (UTC)

Sarah, I need help

Hi Sarah. You've been helpful to me in the past, so I figure I'd come to you. I need help with two things:

1) I'm trying to upload a picture (File:Lawrance A. Bohm from Bohm Law Group website.jpg). I sent an email to the permissions email showing that I had permission from the copyright holder to upload the picture, but nothing happened. See below.

2) Also, see message from Jim below. He stated "The third is that the WP:EN article-to-be (Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Lawrance A. Bohm) reads like a sales brochure for Mr. Bohm's services. I am uncomfortable with Commons supporting what looks like a publicist's work. Bradley J. Mancuso, who is our requester here and the sole author of the article at WP:EN, works for Mr. Bohm."

I have tried really hard to follow the instructions for creating a new page. I've provided a bunch of sources to demonstrate the notoriety of the subject and I've worked to keep the page neutral. I've followed formats of similar pages. This page is no different than these pages: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Lanier http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gloria_Allred http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juan_Dominguez_%28lawyer%29 I could list several more.

Can you please help me? What do I need to do?

Past messages: Regarding the below file/image, I was given this response: File:Lawrance A. Bohm from Bohm Law Group website.jpg

I have been given full permission to use this picture. The owner of this picture is Lawrance A. Bohm. He personally took the picture, posted it on another website, and owns the copyright. Mr. Bohm has given me full permission to use this picture. Bjm99c (talk) 01:23, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Not done. OTRS permission from the copyright holder is needed before the file can be restored. INeverCry 03:07, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Symbol oppose vote.svg Oppose I have three problems with this.

The first is that this appears to be a professional, posed, portrait. It looks to me very unlikely that the subject took it himself as claimed above. It is far more likely that the copyright is owned by the photographer.

The second is that the permission above is very casual. There is absolutely no indication that Mr. Bohm understands that he is licensing the use of his image for use anywhere, including commercial use and derivative works. Although it doesn't say so, I think what appears above amounts to a Wikipedia only license.

The third is that the WP:EN article-to-be (Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Lawrance A. Bohm) reads like a sales brochure for Mr. Bohm's services. I am uncomfortable with Commons supporting what looks like a publicist's work. Bradley J. Mancuso, who is our requester here and the sole author of the article at WP:EN, works for Mr. Bohm.

Therefore, as INC says above, we need both a license from the actual photographer, using the procedure at Commons:OTRS and some consideration of whether this violates COM:ADVERT. . Jim . . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 22:31, 8 January 2013 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

SarahStierch, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

OTRS

Hi, could you please lock a ticket before you start working on it, so that we are not working simultaneously on the same tickets? Jcb (talk) 15:27, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Crazy, that's the first time that has ever happened to me in two years! Sarah (talk) 15:28, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I noticed that you have added permissions to files previously deleted. does the permission also verifies that Mojtaba Salimi is the photographer or copyright holder of these works? are you sure that this one was not published in France for the first time?  ■ MMXX talk 17:35, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

The OTRS was from Rouhani's website and Salimi's representatives. I'm pretty confident with it. I have a feeling Salimi is a more experienced and older photographer than we might be used to working with. Anyway, if you are concerned about that one image, you're welcome to take up any concerns about it via his talk page perhaps. Sarah (talk) 17:38, 31 May 2013 (UTC)
Alright, since the permission is from an official source, I'm going to assume good faith and believe that they have the right to publish these photos.  ■ MMXX talk 15:23, 1 June 2013 (UTC)

Hello, i read this and don't understand why OTRS didn't confirmed permission, i wrote by email to the Editor-in-Chief of civil.ge and he get permission to me to add file, in form which it has now.--Giorgi Balakhadze 18:51, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi, I have processed ticket 2013060110000864 and I do not find that this contains a valid permission. I don't know what made you undelete this file. They are trying to pressure me e.g. by mail, with strange statements about our policies. Jcb (talk) 21:05, 2 June 2013 (UTC)

Please, do not tag images with the permission tag before permission is confirmed. Any use of the tag before permission is confirmed is deceptive. Since we do not know who the photographer is we can not be certain the person has the rights to the image. MorganKevinJ(talk) 22:27, 2 June 2013 (UTC)
Well, I did go through about 250 OTRS permissions for Commons and Wikipedia the other day. So I suppose one or two slip up's isn't too bad. Looks like ya'll took care of it. Great work and thanks for a heads up. Thanks for the work you do! Sarah (talk) 00:34, 3 June 2013 (UTC)
Ok, no problem. And thanks for all the work at OTRS. Jcb (talk) 16:35, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi regarding your templating of my old talkpage with a threat to block template

http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Off2riorob&diff=98405289&oldid=98405237

I uploaded thousands of move to commons templated en wikipedia pics to commons - If one or two of them are disputed - that is fine by me - delete them - delete them all if you want - but I was a good faith user using the best of my copyright knowledge simply transfering templated pics from en wiki to commons - I was not the original uploader to en wikipedia of any of the pics. Regards - Youreallycan (talk) 12:32, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

As an administrator you are expected and required to respond to comments regarding your actions

As an administrator you are expected and required to respond to comments regarding your actions - at least a, "yes I see your comment" - or something - you have returned to editing and failed to respond to me at all - did you even read my post? Youreallycan (talk) 04:54, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

First thing. COM:MELLOW out a bit. The statement on the template "Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing." is a standard thing, because due to the number of copyvios that people upload we simply need to let people know that we take copyvios seriously here on Commons. You are asking that Sarah extend good faith to you, the same thing needs to occur from your end as well. russavia (talk) 07:28, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
Hi everyone. Sorry for the delay, I am traveling and working right now at a workshop I'm helping to run, so I'm not really on Commons right now. Thanks so much for sharing your story with me Youreallycan. I was merely doing my job as an admin - and I did not know you weren't the original uploader and perhaps that is my fault for not looking into it further. Thanks for the contributions you make and thank you for letting me know what type of work you are doing! It's great for me, especially as a new administrator, to know. Sarah (talk) 07:42, 22 June 2013 (UTC)
@Youreallycan, already 4 days ago I posted an explaination to your other talkpage, which in essence said the same as Russavia above. However, you seem to have ignored it. Nobody accuses you to be a copyviolator. But every now and then I have made the same experience that files, when transferred to Commons, were either found to be copyvios or at least missing a valid permission, though they had been hosted on :en for quite a while. That doesn't mean people over at :en are idiots or something. Scrutiny for the copyright status has changed (increased) over the years on both projects. --Túrelio (talk) 07:45, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

Hi Sarah, just thought I'd pop you a link to Commons:Deletion requests/File:Simon Libsig.jpg which you may be interested in looking at. In this instance Turelio appears to have been correct in his tagging this photo as missing permission. I see you removed that tagging stating that the licence is on Flickr. If this was a case of where the licence was legit, Template:Flickrreview is available to show that the licence has been checked by an authorised Commons person (this is normally done by bot, but appears to have been missed on this occasion). Anyway, just an FYI for you. russavia (talk) 11:13, 6 July 2013 (UTC)

Hi Sarah, {{Copyvio}} is for obvious copyright violations (images ripped from the web etc.), not for difficult cases like freedom of panorama. The fact that you had to include this whole story already indicates that it's not very obvious. Please use regular deletion requests in the future and it's also nice to inform the contributor. File:United States Post Office, Berkeley, California - Stierch - 14.jpg

Hi SarahStierch; Your photograph of the mural detail at the United States Post Office, Berkeley, California, is well executed and a valuable contribution to Commons. However, I wonder if the underlying work is protected by copyright. "Often mistaken for WPA art, post office murals were actually executed by artists working for the Section of Fine Arts. Commonly known as "the Section," it was established in 1934 and administered by the Procurement Division of the Treasury Department."[13] To me, this suggests that {{PD-USGov-WPA}} added on 5 September 2012 by Slowking4 may be inapplicable.[14] I wonder if you would be kind enough to clarify the copyright status of the underlying work, please? License from the author of the present.

Hello Sarah. Could you explain why you need to delete the images of the artist Tatarnikov Alexander? He loaded them under the license, and that he is allowed to use pictures if you want to delete an article in the English Wikipedia, delete and to the rest of the drawings is not clear why such an attitude. Just a confirmation already not once was, but you continue to put die for deletion. That does not appeal to you? Could you tell me please? I think this is done to remove the article.

Yes indeed article for the second time is added but are now better with pictures. But if you want to delete, and then delete, but the images have to do with it? You've written here: their work has been speedy deleted in English Wikipedia before, and now a new discussion is taking place to delete their autobiography again. We can argue about the encyclopedic worth of these images, or use the whole Commons:What_Commons_is_not#Commons_is_not_your_personal_free_web_host policy. I just felt like if I didn't nominate these for deletion I'd lose sleep. It follows from this that don't like the picture and there is pressure to delete the article and pictures with them. Looks like it.

--- In Russia there is an article in the criminal code - bringing of a person to a grave condition.

Hello. The best place to discuss this is here. Not on my talk page. Therefore others can participate. Thanks. Sarah (talk) 19:39, 1 December 2013 (UTC)

Explain why you don't like these pictures? It is not clear it. Remove then the article in the English Wikipedia, once this guy is so bad for you, and the pictures he himself and license there. Put then license these pictures, you OTRS account there.. Help the individual. it's better than just to take and put to delete and then listen to different is not the right words.. We love you, and you don't like creativity.

Favorites gadget

Hi Sarah, yesterday in the Hangout you mentioned that it would be nice to have a tool to quickly mark an image as a "favorite". I whipped up a gadget and thought you might be interested in helping test it. If you are add

importScript('MediaWiki:Gadget-Favorites.js');

To your userscript page. On file pages there is a new "Fave" link next to the Bookmark star (this will be made into a fancy thumbs up icon soon, as the star and heart icons are already used). There is a lot of magic going on in the background to make sure every favorite is safely saved in your Favorites gallery. --Dschwen (talk) 21:02, 5 December 2013 (UTC)

I got some good suggestions from User:MarkTraceur, will be implementing those tonight. They will cause incompatibilities with older version (Array->Object switch). So you might want to hold off for another day. --Dschwen (talk) 14:55, 6 December 2013 (UTC)

Aloha!

Hi Sarah! Hey, there is a little trouble brewing with photos you uploaded on enwiki with a fair use rationale. They have been marked for transfer to Commons, and I already deleted them because of the FU tag. It seems like you took those photos, but your name was added way after the first upload. Could you have please a look and let me know? Maybe you could do a quick OTRS? Shall I restore? Thanks a bunch! Here are the files: File:Our Lady of Fatima Detail.jpg and File:Our Lady Of Fatima Back1.jpg --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 13:22, 2 June 2014 (UTC)

Those pictures were taken by me but the artwork is not out of copyright. The images were used on an article on English Wikipedia for the sculpture. While the image I took might be freely licensed, the artwork in the image is now. It's copyrighted (or no known copyright) so they are OK to be deleted. Except the one on EN WP that is being used for depicting the artwork. Sarah (talk) 22:13, 3 June 2014 (UTC)

Re-edition of the Photowikimeetup in Wikimania 2014

Hello SarahStierch! in the case that you are also visiting this year's Wikimania in London, you may be interested in attending the new edition of the photowikimeetup that took place in Hong Kong last year, and where you listed up. As the preparation is not yet settled, you are more than welcomed to take part in the discussion here. All the best, Poco2 17:39, 15 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi there,

I notice you uploaded (and apparently took) this photograph which is labelled as The Scotsman hotel in Edinburgh. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is mistaken- my first thought was that it's an attractive building, but not one that looks anything like The Scotsman hotel. A comment on your Flickr page expresses the same sentiment.

A little work with Google Image search suggests it's probably the clock tower of the red brick section of Kings Cross railway station in London. See here and here, for example.

Could you please confirm if this is correct (or ought to be, since I'm assuming you know if you visited London or not!)? Thanks, Ubcule (talk) 20:52, 25 June 2014 (UTC)

Having double-checked, this is St Pancras railway station (which is near, but not the same as, Kings Cross). In the absence of a response, I've moved it to a new name and altered the description.

File:Sourcing, original research and reliablity - STIERCH.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Basin of the Rio Gila, Arizona by Henry Cheever Pratt.png.

Thank you.

Indy 500 gymnast photo.

Hello,

I just wanted to inform you that the gymnast you photographed at the Indy 500 parade wasn't Sam Mikulak as you originally labelled it - It was actually Alec Yoder, a Senior U.S. National team member and Indianapolis native.

ACK! Thanks for telling me. Fixing now. Sarah (talk) 21:55, 5 June 2015 (UTC)

Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Thanks User:Stefan4. I fixed it. For future reference..all you have to do is add a .0 at the end. The template should be {{self|cc-by-4.0}} in case you ever need to #sofixit sometime :) Sarah (talk) 16:34, 30 June 2015 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2014 startet in Kürze

Hallo SarahStierch,

De-adminship warning

This talk page in other languages:

Dear SarahStierch, I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Feb-Mar 2016 within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.

Thank you, odder (talk) 22:23, 13 February 2016 (UTC)

Random no source tagging without actually examining the image pages does not really help to retain your Admin status. @Odder: please examine these admin actions to prevent damage to the project. --Denniss (talk) 08:50, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi User:Denniss. I really appreciate you coming by my talk page. It looks like I accidentally "messed up" three files. I understand the error regarding the US Public Domain work, a silly error on my part. I worked on HUNDREDS of files yesterday, clearing much needed back log (which no one seems to notice the good work I did :) ) and occasionally a few errors pop in. I do not think EXIF data is sufficient enough for a source, no matter what others might say - EXIF merely shows someone took the photo, but who - is it the uploaders camera or someone else? I have seen situations like that in the past - this seems to be the issue with some of the images. Regardless, my apologies for wasting your time in cleaning up the mess I have made on THREE files. For the record, keeping a friendly attitude and assuming good faith is the way to keep admins and editors on this website - not being patronizing. Thank you for your contributions to the free knowledge movement and for letting me know about these errors, I will perhaps work on clearing less backlog at once to avoid error. Sarah (talk) 17:09, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
Also, thanks User:Odder for letting me know about my status. I have two accounts, which is stated on my user page, and I tend do edit a lot on my Missvain account. I wonder if there is an opportunity to merge these two accounts so I can have admin on Missvain instead. I'll have to look into that. Sarah (talk) 17:10, 14 February 2016 (UTC)
Hi Sarah, I don't think it is actually technically possible to merge two differently named accounts on Wikimedia wikis. The term account merge that you might have seen mentioned around referred to merging the same local user name into one global account (for Single User Login finalisation); I'm not aware of it ever being possible to merge two differently named accounts (either local or global) into one. What we can do, however--and it has been done in the past--is to remove the admin flag from your current account (this one) and add them to the Missvain account. If you'd like to proceed with this, then just for the purpose of having a local archive, please file a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard, and I'll request on Meta that stewards remove the admin bit from the SarahStierch account and add it to the Missvain account myself. However, the two accounts will just keep on existing simultaneously as they do now as it's not possible to delete either of them. Let me know what you think about this. odder (talk) 20:21, 14 February 2016 (UTC)

Image sur Commons

Bonjour cher SarahStierch,

Bien cordialement. Gérald Garitan (talk) 12:23, 20 February 2016 (UTC)
File:Still Life with Bottles and Glasses by Georges Braque.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

Your VFC installation method is deprecated

Hello SarahStierch, we are aware that using the old installation method of VFC (via common.js, which you are using) may not work reliably anymore and can break other scripts as well. A detailed explanation can be found here. Important: To prevent problems please remove the old VFC installation code from your common.js and instead enable the VFC gadget in your preferences. Thanks! --VFC devs (q) 16:24, 22 May 2017 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Warning sign
This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:WWC screenshot.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

deletion request regarding the Cosmos Flower of Life

Hello Sarah Stierch, I hope this is the correct area to write, the interface here is hard to navigate and I have very little time to figure it out. I would like to know why you have made a request for deletion on Cosmos Flower of Life-I created this photo and graphic. The New Age meaning of the Flower of life symbol is not a copyrighted concept and the flower of life symbol/graphic used is not copyrighted. There is no proof that the symbol of The Flower of Life has any specific meaning. It is an old symbol that occurs in many cultures, with many interpretations. Presenting the Circular Cosmos Flower as the Flower of Life is as valid as the claims of the any New Age statements online that refer to this symbol. It is a circular symbol depicting what appears to be elongated seeds touching point to point, arranged in a geometric pattern inside the circle. Are you suggesting that all the interpretations of the Flower of Life symbol should removed from Wikimedia commons? One is no more accurate or inaccurate than the next. Also, It seems we are from the same area and county. I would also know why you are so keen on deleting so many references to history in our County, such as the Asti information, Interesting. -Diane Schell-Engdahl

Random removal of picture 'Cessna 1994 red square.jpg'

Dear SarahStierch The log shows that you removed a photo called 'Cessna 1994 red square.jpg' on February 24, 2016, the reason stated 'no permission'. The picture was taken on July 25, 1994 on Red Square in Moscow and is property of the band Cessna (Band) in the picture. I happened to be the band's lead singer, so I should know. Furthermore, I noticed you were threatened to lose your adminship on Feb 13, 2016. The instructions were to log on and perform at least five admin actions. My conclusion is that your unnecessary removal of a photo the details of which cannot possibly be of your knowledge is directly connected to the pending loss of your adminship and was merely an action to prevent losing that adminship. I suggest a reversal of the removal of the picture on Feb 14 and an apology are in order. Yours, Arnd (Vokalz)
