No problem. Thanks for having such a great icon gallery :D I have it bookmarked, so if I need an icon, well I go there :D Thanks again, Cro0016 06:48, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Brilliant Idea" barnstar[edit]

Hey White Cat, I found you uploaded Image:"What a Brilliant Idea!" Barnstar.png which was already on here as Image:Barnstar-lightbulb3.png (The same name as en.wp's version). I wasn't sure if this was the beginning of renaming it or you just didn't know about the other. Anyway, this image was recently changed as a result of Commons:Deletion requests/Image:Barnstar-lightbulb3.png. I figured I'd let you sort this out because I know you've been renaming barnstars lately. Cheers, Rocket000 06:24, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I actually am not sure what is the right name for these barnstar images. I would welcome some assistance. I can use my bot to help relink images. I do not want to abuse commonsdelinker. There is an insane number of barnstar image usage. -- Cat ちぃ? 19:35, 4 May 2008 (UTC)
I have no idea since they can be used in different circumstances, like the "bright idea" has also been used for technology-related things (but I think the name you pick is fine as that's what it's mostly used for). I spend a lot more time here on Commons (where barnstars aren't as prevalent) than Wikipedia, so I'm probably not the best person to ask anyway. There's also the multilingual thing to consider. Some of those barnstars really need to be renamed though.
I actually had another question for you. I love what you did with combining the various FP templates. They were starting to overwhelm some image pages. My question is should the other templates be removed if the new one accounts for it. For example: Image:Broadway tower edit.jpg. You left the {{POTY 2007-winner}} and {{Featured eswiki}} templates on there. Also see Template talk:Featured picture mul. Thanks! Rocket000 19:16, 5 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The purging of eswiki had to wait because first I needed to restructure how eswiki was naming their nominations. Merging entries on Template:Featured picture mul is a slow process. I haven't processed most wikis and real-world issues will probably keep me busy for the next 3 weeks. We should probably abolish ro deprecate the unneeded "featured" templates. But they should not be deleted. -- Cat ちぃ? 04:56, 6 May 2008 (UTC)
Ok. If there's anything you would like me to help you with, I'd be glad to. I got a bot who's looking for some work. :) Rocket000 05:01, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nicolas image[edit]

Could you perform the move on the images on question to the agreed upon name Image:ImageinNicolas.jpg as the other admin User:Siebrand has protected all pages, and was completely unresponsive to the debate. Regards, -- Jeff3000 01:23, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I think I will. I just want to see if Siebrand has anything to say first because I would like for this to be the last renaming. Rocket000 01:37, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He apparently has nothing to say, as he's continued on his other edits, and even responded to other comments on his talk page that were posted after your posts. Ironically, it was referring to another name change, and in that case he posted that he changed the name to the one that was better sourced, but in this case, he's ignored the better sources. Another Persian editor has uploaded the same image now to Image:Báb Image in Nicolas.gif, even with the neutral naming before. Can this be deleted. Regards, -- Jeff3000 15:36, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And another image Image:Báb's repentance.jpg has a non-neutral name. Note the following sources

  • Amanat, Abbas (1989) Resurrection and Renewal: The Making of the Babi Movement in Iran, Ithaca: Cornell University Press, pp. p. 390−393
  • MacEoin, Denis (May 1997). "The Trial of the Bab: Shi'ite Orthodoxy Confronts its Mirror Image". Occasional Papers in Shaykhi, Babi and Baha'i Studies 1. Retrieved on 2008-05-07.

state the repentence letters were constructed by the government to discredit the Bab. Could that image be moved to a more neutral name to account for the sources. Regards, -- Jeff3000 15:56, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(ec) I can't delete it because it's not a duplicate. This time it's the full page. It could be renamed, of course. Both of them. I would do this myself, but I would really like if another admin could handle it this time. Renaming it again may make it seem like I have personal interest in this matter. To be honest, I don't know that much about the subject and don't really feel comfortable taking charge. I hope you understand. Rocket000 16:02, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not asking for a delete, but a rename. The problem is now other admin has commented over two days of discussion. I don't believe any other admin will act. Can you ask another admin to act? Regards, -- Jeff3000 16:05, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I was referring to the first message: "Can this be deleted" It's already on the admin notice board so I know others are definitely seeing it. It was resolved for awhile, so let's give it a little time first. I'll make personal request if no one touches it by tomorrow. Rocket000 16:11, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's getting a little ridiculous. He's even deleting comments with sources regarding the description of the images. See here. Regards, -- Jeff3000 19:23, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
He's doing it again [1]. Removing a verifiable source, and the dispute tag. Regards, -- Jeff3000 21:47, 7 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

COM: vs C:[edit]

I was asking on Bugzilla about this, and was told that com: was a reserved linkage, saved for the comanche language Wikipedia. For that matter, Commons: vs. commons: is bound to cause problems at some point too. And I don't really know what's to be done. Adam Cuerden 02:17, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. I figured this was the reason they wouldn't make COM: a alias for Commons: like WP: is for Wikipedia. I don't understand the Commons/commons thing though. Why would that be a problem? Rocket000 02:25, 6 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

POV Pushing? Special:Contributions/ChristianEdwardGruber, Special:Contributions/Cunado, ... Whats your solution abot this problem? --Rohan 05:52, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, Commons doesn't really have a NPOV policy, but neutrality is usually what we strive for it. I'm not sure what should be done at this point. What do you suggest? Rocket000 12:18, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

So it's been a day, and no other administrators have commented.

  • In regards to Image:Báb Image in Nicolas.gif‎, I have shown that the source I was stating from the beginning is in fact real, and that there are newer and more reliable sources that state that the image in question is not the Bab, but Sayyid Kazim, and thus the title of the image is wrong, and in the least not-neutral. Given that the important part of the image is a duplicate of the one found in Image:ImageinNicolas.jpg I recommend a redirect to that page.
  • In regards to Image:Báb's repentance.jpg, the title is non-neutral as well. Abbas Amanat, who is also quite critical of the Baha'i Faith, wrote
"The text of the recantation published by Browne also merits the utmost reservation. Undated and unsigned, the document hardly qualifies as the "sealed undertaking" in the official report. Moreover, its plain language and wording are high distinct from the Bab's peculiar style. We can assume that if at all authentic, the recantation was prepared by the authorities but for reasons unknown - perhaps due to the Bab's refusal - remained unsigned."[1]
"This document, which was sent to Browne by French Baha'i Hippolyte Drefus, was apparently later traced in the Majlis Library in Tehran. Since its publication in 1918, it became part and parcen of all anti-Babi-Baha'i polemics and an effective weapon in the growing arsenal of fictitious documentation."[1]
I recommend that this image be moved to something liked Image:AllegedRecantation.jpg.

Jeff - a day is not long in the life of Commons - this is not a straightforward issue to those without in depth knowledge. Make sue it is on a Commons admins board with your views - that way you will get to active people at the time. Placing it on individual talk pages will mean delays before people are on line & get the message. I have onmly been on briefly today & will not be on long now for example. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 13:05, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Herby. I was hoping someone else would join in. :)
@Jeff: POV issues aren't my forte—I'm a Commons admin not a en.wp admin. I still try to solve these disputes, but sometimes, like now, others' input is needed. Please don't see this as passive approval or simply not caring. I want to help, and like Herby said, a day on Commons isn't long. Things move relatively slower and mellower here. Rocket000 14:03, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the difficulty in understanding the situation, and understand things go slower. My only quam is that the names of these images, which goes against most of the veriable information is used as a passive approval that they are correct in the Persian wikipedia. Secondly, while I'm willing to compromise the other editor in question just removes anything which is not to his liking, removing verifable sources that go against his belief, and removes tags which states that there is dispute. I'm fine with leaving the images here, but with neutral names; the other editor is misrepresting the sources. Regards, and thanks again. -- Jeff3000 14:06, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I really thought Image:ImageinNicolas.jpg was good neutral name, but it seems that didn't satisfy everyone either. This is why I hesitate to rename the others. I agree they should be renamed, but only to something everyone's cool with. Otherwise it's still choosing one side over the other—right or wrong. I would urge you to talk to the others involved and work towards settling on a neutral names and descriptions, not work towards proving who's right. You shouldn't need sources to simply name a image. I mean, look at some of our image names. Of course, something like Image:005438359345.jpg isn't ideal but names don't have to be perfect. Descriptions either. All you need to do is say something like "Image from The Báb: The Herald of the Day of Days" That's it. Let Wikipedia educate readers about the subject of the image. On Commons, we're more concerned with the image itself. Some people have a hard time separating these two things. (And I'm not talking about you or anything.) Rocket000 14:31, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm ready for a discussion. I think if you would approach him, asking him to discuss a neutral name, he would be more inclined to actually discuss, instead of revert. Thanks. -- Jeff3000 15:07, 8 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete Image:PhotoPerfectScreen.png ?[edit]

I asked Arcadia Software, the owner of PhotoPerfect, if they would write an article on this program, or if I should write one. They wanted me to write it, so presumably they also accept my making this screenshot. Is there a special permission registration procedure for this? Could we get it undeleted now? OlavN 07:00, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, that doesn't meet our licensing requirements. All our images must be freely licensed. That is, they may be used by anyone for any purpose including commercial use and derivative works. Simply getting permission to used it in a Wikipedia article is not enough. Rocket000 07:04, 9 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Protection of heavy use templates[edit]

You have practically unprotected every page under {{Featured picture mul}}. Please stop unprotecting pages I protect like that. -- Cat ちぃ? 11:31, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

Stop unprotecting license templates and rediretcs. What you are doing can have serious legal implications. Recall the disclaimer thing and GFDL template? -- Cat ちぃ? 11:37, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Holy crap. I was just writing you a message about the same thing. I think you're over-doing it with the page protection. Preemptive protection is not justified at all. There was no vandalism or edit-wars. So you have no reason. Heavy use is 100s of thousands (even millions), not 500 or so. Please stop locking down Commons. This isn't Wikipedia. And no. we don't protect things just because they're licenses. That's nearly all our templates. Rocket000 11:39, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at Special:MostLinkedTemplates to get an idea of how things are here before applying what you're use to. Rocket000 11:40, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you even check the usage!? You fully protected Template:Dp twice. It had no transclusions/links at all. It was a redirect to a semi-protected deprecated template. Wow. Rocket000 11:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes and we would be forced to bay third parties money or deal with an unnecesary disclaimer if we do not protect license templates. We protect templates used to tag images because they have legal implications. If you do not like the level of protection, feel free to file your case on the villige pump or admins noticeboard. Heavy use is transclusion in over "50" pages. "Heavy use" can also mean very visible pages such as templates used on the main page.
You shouldn't lecture me weather or not this is wikipedia. I have been around on commons for well over 3 years now.
-- Cat ちぃ? 11:44, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Stop wheelwaring. -- Cat ちぃ? 11:45, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Template:Dp is a heavy use license template with many transclusions on french wikipedia. It redirects to "Domaine public" on fr.wikipedia [2] which is also under heavy use. -- Cat ちぃ? 11:47, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Um.. So what? Rocket000 11:48, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you even know that images on other wikipedias are actually uploaded to commons? -- Cat ちぃ? 11:49, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Do you know other projects can't transclude our templates? Rocket000 11:50, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure they can. When an image is moved to commons that is exactly what happens. -- Cat ちぃ? 11:55, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
When a image is moved to Commons, it's then on Commons so they aren't transcluding anything, we are. If they do {{Dp}} on fr.wp our template won't show up. So zero links means zero links. Also, it's deprecated. It's good to clean up what's not being used. People shouldn't be using that license anymore, so where's the need for a redirect? Rocket000 12:01, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That is up to fr.wikipedia not you and me. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:07, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
No. If it's on Commons, then it's up to us. If it's not on Commons, then fine. But still, what purpose does a redirect serve? Rocket000 12:11, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It serves to establish the license when images are moved from French wikimedia projects. I regularly process such redirects converting them to the commons name. Underuse of some such redirects including template:Dp is a result of my work. Such redirects are sometimes created in dealing with typos. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:26, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

White Cat, I'm sorry. I don't like arguing like this: COM:AN#Full protection of every license template and anything that's used more than 50 times. What you're saying goes against so many things. Rocket000 12:14, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It is not possible for me to compromise from a stance that puts commons and wikimedia at a legal risk. So I do not see what good my participation in such a discussion do. Others will probably tell you what I have been saying all along in a better way. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:26, 10 May 2008 (UTC)

I have to confess to being extremely uneasy about any licence template being unprotected, there's no reason for anybody to ever edit a licence template, and the consequences of a licence template being altered (and this includes a redirect which could be changed to read something legally problematic) must be very seriously considered. Vandalism at Wikipedia is a minor inconvenience which rarely presents legal problems, but vandalism here, especially on a licence template has all manner of legal implications. Nick 12:16, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Got some back up, huh? "there's no reason for anybody to ever edit a licence template" This is a wiki. There's always edits to be made. If not we'll edit anyway. This is why we're here. And if some changes it illegally, you simply revert. It's in the history anyway. If anyone can upload files with what license, or go to the image's page and change it, what's the difference? Rocket000 12:27, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This isn't a war. You cannot simply revert a change on a license template. All uploads using the template while the template is vandalised still has legal implications. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:41, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
For example I could add a binding legal note that states "that every person uploading a work under the GFDL license are required to pay me 100$ service fee". If anyone uploads their own work with that change in present it would be legally binding. Or if the wording in the license is removed the work would not be freely licensed at all. Consider Image:License vandalism.png. -- Cat ちぃ? 12:57, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
And I could say anyone who edits this page is required to pay me 100$ service fee. Things don't work like that. Seriously, I'm done. Rocket000 13:03, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, no you can't. MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning is the only thing legaly binding when "save page" button is clicked. -- Cat ちぃ? 13:10, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
Whatever else I do not want to see en wp style wheel warring here. I am quite prepared to take action towards both of you if you cannot interact in a collaborative way. I understand Nick's point which seems to me well made. Let's take this to an appropriate community page so that others can have their say. --Herby talk thyme 12:19, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Senmenar[edit]

Hello Rocket, I've been willing to compromise, but the other editor is not willing to at all. He (1) removes the fact that the name of the image is disputed, (2) places the image in a category that goes against most of the sources, and (3) removes a description of the document in question from a reliable source. I've left his description, but he keeps removing mine. Finally, no other admins have commented over a period of 5 days. I believe my compromise solution was valid; the other user is just being disruptive. What do you suggest? Regards, -- Jeff3000 14:46, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The user has now unilaterally moved the page, without discussion. Why does he get to perform his actions, which are disputed without any admin intervention or discussion. Regards, -- Jeff3000 19:24, 10 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Probably Neutral names are the ones you recommended, and probably here is Wikipedia for writing an article in images page. Please see Administrators' noticeboard. Instead of arguing and reverting (Special:Contributions/Jeff3000), our time can be better spent improving our projects. Best regards • Rohan T 21:01, 10 May 2008

Thanks for offering bot on "Changing licenses?"[edit]

Hi, I probably will not change (m)any of the licenses I ever gave. This question was rather to clear my mind on "what would happen if_", and about the difference (to me as a layman, they seemed pretty much the same). Fact is, however, that to NON-wikipedians something like (c) seems more trustworthy than some license they have not yet heard of. Best, WeHaWoe 08:00, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. And I understand about the license thing, but I think CC licenses are popular enough that it wouldn't be a problem. I mean you got major sites like Flickr making them well-known and their use is only increasing. If someone's never heard of it before, who knows, maybe it will turn them on to free licensing. Anyway, if you ever need some bot work done, you know where to look. Cheers, Rocket000 08:28, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I sure will, if... ;)
On "CC", I just learned that a couple of professional photographers I ever contacted to beg for some pics for WP-articles were "reluctant" (to put it gently -- I did not ever get any pic from any of them). So, the "green (c)" might be an alternative I might "offer" another time -- but I wanted to know before what it means exactly, compared to CC. -- cu, WeHaWoe 18:53, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Al-Afghani[edit]

Hello. NisarKand so far has not provided a single source for him being Pashtun. On the other hand, I have given scholarly sources saying that he was infact born in Iran. I have asked several admins to step into this because I don't like edit warring either. Please protect the page without unsourced categories. NisarKand is just a Pashtun nationalist. Please take a look at his contributions and you can see this, he is just here on Commons to create an identity for his Pashtun people. I other hand am not claiming Al-Afghani as my ethnicity, I am just removing claims that are not even supported by a single source. I've asked NisarKand to provide just one source but he has not so far and instead just speculates. Please give us your opinion on this or protect the image. Thanks. Le Behnam 02:00, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My solution, as it always has been, is not to remove each other's categories. There's obviously some disagreement here and by having both categories allow people to find it no matter what side of the issue they are on. Helping people find images is the whole point of categories, and if someone like NisarKand is looking for them, where do you think he's going to look? There are more productive things you guys can be doing. Rocket000 03:27, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem. Both are very simple. To sign your comments with a timestamp you simply type ~~~~. That is, 4 tildes (above the tab key on your keyboard). Or click the above the edit screen. To make a deletion request simply click the "Nominate for deletion" link in your side bar (it show up when on a image page). Fill in your reason, hit ok, and it will do the rest for you. I have no idea what the issue is with the image, the talk page hasn't had replies for months and I can't spot any edit warring. I made an update to the image that excludes the dutch language area, in the image is shown as a german dialect which is false, but I can't update it because it's blocked. Pietervhuis 20:54, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree it's been protected for a long time, but this image seems to attract a lot of edit-warring. There's a long history here (106 deleted edits, tons of upload-warring, and more than a few people involved). I suggest talking to Samulili as he's the admin who protected the page. Cheers, Rocket000 21:06, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Questions V. 2[edit]

Time to archive the other section! Today is Norway's national day, and I saw no gallery page. Then Kanonkas made his first gallery in honour for his country :) Yup, about time that bot got blocked for some time. The owner (User:Magnus Manske) should improve his bot first so we can identify people who upload copvyios. It's like unregistered users uploading files. --Kanonkas(talk) 09:30, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's great! I wasn't even aware of that. It looks good. Rocket000 09:48, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe thank you! I was shocked when I saw a RFB today, then later I saw 3 RFB. Take a look at your own --Kanonkas(talk) 10:26, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! Three in one day. I'm not sure what to do. We need another 'crat but 3 is too many (if they all pass). Rocket000 10:44, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
TonyMontana is again uploading images after they were deleted yesterday. I noticed 1 image was left, and looked further on the description which gave a link to the italian wikipedia, where it seems to be under fair use. --Kanonkas(talk) 13:06, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
User has been indef blocked. Anyway, is their anything I should improve now? Just got to ask you! :P --Kanonkas(talk) 15:48, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, missed your first message. Well, I'm glad it's taken care of. Rocket000 16:21, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now you missed my second message :P Just wondering if I need to improve anything, I've got around 255 deleted edits now. --Kanonkas(talk) 17:17, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Um... what about translating the upload form? Or you had enough for now? :) I don't know. What do you feel like doing? Rocket000 17:23, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll get back to the translation, just I don't feel to do it right now heh. (Kanonkas' is doing it pretty well?) :) --Kanonkas(talk) 17:26, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Take a look at this --Kanonkas(talk) 15:13, 18 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your note at the debate. I was wondering, when do you belive that nomination should be done? I'm in no hurry but those tools would be very helpful. --Kanonkas(talk) 20:22, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I think you're definitely ready, but we do have this 2 month minimum. Of course, that's not set in stone but I would hate to see you fail because of some technicality. On the other hand, I know many active voters would support you right now anyway. Maybe give it just a little bit more time? Rocket000 20:36, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, it's only 1 month left. I just couldn't find that section, but I knew it was here. Thanks. I've got to sleep now, hope you have a good day! :) --Kanonkas(talk) 20:42, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done But please don't ever say "per some other project's guideline" again :P Rocket000 20:53, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, sorry about that but I've seen many wiki policy coming here so I'm kind of :S no Wikipedia policy counts here? e.g. 3RR AKA 3 revert rule. Thanks again Rocket :) --Kanonkas(talk) 10:52, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(←) Nope. I mean, we have a lot in common of course, but unless you find the policy here, it doesn't matter. Including 3RR. We have no such thing (but edit-warring is always bad). You got to keep in mind that there are tons of Wikipedias and other Wikimedia projects out there all with their own project-specific rules. On Commons, we tend to do things based more of common sense and common practices than written policies. For example we have no NPOV, verifiability, "Ignore all rules", notability-standards, Manual of Style, etc. but some things have become de facto standards anyway because most users come from those projects and expect Commons to be the same. It's ok to do some things like en.wp (they got a lot more input over there and we can learn from them), but saying their policy is the reason for doing something isn't very good (especially to the few who call Commons their home wiki). You'll find there are some WP policies that are unanimously accepted here but aren't written down, like w:WP:Civility Rocket000 11:23, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah I got it, it's not actually written down but for some reason we keep it that way e.g. unwritten law? I'm more concerned regarding the actions taken against Juiced lemon first time s/he got blocked due to 3RR. Then later got blocked indef for Intimidating behaviour. --Kanonkas(talk) 11:38, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to update the {{Blocked}} template, would be nice if you could help me. That is just one I'll be doing now, I don't know how to {{Subst}} templates, or how to really make them from scratch. --Kanonkas(talk) 19:28, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you don't use the template {{Subst}} to substitute templates, you use {{subst:}}, which is built into the MediaWiki software. All it does is substitute the template call {{}} with the actual text of the template. What do you need help with? Rocket000 08:24, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I need help with just changing the block notice template, with the one here and this one. The only change is the image + some text. --Kanonkas(talk) 10:59, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I made some of the changes. I'm not sure about one of them. {{Blocked User}} seems like it's more to inform others the user is blocked, I think. ??? Rocket000 11:31, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I wasn't sure about that one either, but it sounds like it's more to inform others and that {{Blocked}} is the one template you're going to use instead. Thank you for updating the other template. --Kanonkas(talk) 09:27, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

images with incompatible license[edit]

Hello. This is a request. Either wikimedia accepts my cc-by-sa-nc'd photos to be cc-by-sa'd for wikimedia only or all photos from 2007 and onwards must be deleted. I really hope that it is possible to give wikimedia the additional permission. That's no restriction - on the contrary: it's more freedom. If some fundamential ideals are standing in the way, I can't help it. I want this problem to be finally resolved now and here! Fabelfroh 09:31, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We have those fundamental ideals for a reason; this is the purpose of Commons—to provide free media to everyone. Yes, Wikimedia projects come first, but they're not the only users of our stuff. Anyway, I can't help it anymore than you can. It's not possible to license exclusively under CC licenses. Read the text of the license and you'll see why that's not an option. I want to solve this too, of course, but it's a complex issue. The deletion request is still open and I couldn't close even if I knew what to do because I've been involved. Rocket000 10:06, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Could you then tag all the other photos of 2007 as deletion requests too, even if some of them have wrong license infos in their exif's (just discovered that)? Fabelfroh 12:39, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, technically they're not in violation of our license policy (according to the stated license, anyway); I personally have no reason to nominate them. This would be considered a "user request" so it would only make sense if the user made it. However, I wouldn't go through all the trouble of making a mass deletion request, since that's a lot of images and the current DR doesn't seem to be going anywhere. Maybe you should mention this there. Or ask on Commons:Administrators' noticeboard? Rocket000 12:51, 17 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed with the Valued images project[edit]

As you may have seen, this project is going live for nominations on 1 June, 2008 at 0:00 UTC. Before then, there are a few things to be finished off, and any help you can give will be welcome. The latest discussion is at Commons talk:Valued images candidates#Open action items for Valued images.

When the project launches publicly on 1 June, it will need reviewers who are able to jump in quickly and provide prompt feedback. During those critical first few weeks it will be important to have a decent number of reviewers who are prepared to put in the effort to make sure the first nominations are well-reviewed, as that will set the standard for the future.

Would you help, please, with the final tasks now, and also pledge your help with some reviewing on 1 June and thereafter? --MichaelMaggs 17:08, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Of course I will! So much time and effort has been put into this so far, it can only be a success. I will do anything I can to help. I'm heading over to the talk page now. Rocket000 20:03, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps better to copy the template to a sandbox name space and do the experiments there... It is interesting to follow your difs (your help is appreciated btw, thanks). I can see you are going through many of the same steps I have tried before. I really think you have to nest the ifs to do it right, but it gives ugly notation and makes the template very difficilt to read and debug as there will be a swarm of ending braces. Its 0:43 am here and I gotta wake up at 6am for work, so I better go to bed now. Happy editing. -- Slaunger 22:45, 19 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Templates and template pasting bots[edit]

I started to make some templates for the plant categories. I know they can be probably crafted much nicer than what I have done -- I am pasting from other templates.

I am leaving this same message with two of you from my watch list who seem able to do things and busy doing them. And, I think my first contact with both of you was in frustration, but it has been a while....

One thing, I have a category included in the template, so I am wondering if there is a way that I can keep bots from pasting "no category" templates on them and two, I am wondering if they can be crafted more nicely.

I have put them at Category:Plant Navigation Templates as soon as I make that category. The plants are a pain and these templates are for a particularly large family.

Also, thank you both for making my watch list not so empty or filled with narcissistic photographers. Additionally, if I could remember what frustrated me or put you on my watch list to begin with, I would probably apologize.... -- carol 02:39, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Heh, I think it was my name you had a problem with, or you thought I was some kind of FPC voting bot... I don't know :) Anyway, I'm not sure what you mean: "keep bots from pasting "no category" templates on them" ??? You mean how to keep them from adding to the images? They shouldn't if the images are indeed categorize (even if it's through a template). Plus we don't have any bots that do that (that I'm aware of). As for your second question, they look good to me. What changes did you have in mind? Rocket000 02:54, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I just wanted someone with more experience with this kind of thing to look at them. I am pasting them on a lot of category pages and undoing it will be a pain. It takes so long to tax my own patience, it is probably really good that I started with such a big family, even though I made a lot of category without the templates, there were so many that I didn't get to yet. It is the same thing with my web site -- when I am writing things, the technical improvements get shoved aside because that is not where my brains are going.
Right after I finished pasting this message on here and on the other talk page, I started to think about my drivers education teachers. One of them screamed at me and the other one said "do as I say, not as I do". I grew up since then and I have determined that I am not like either of them. Which country are you from? -- carol 03:02, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I see some problems I'll fix (like right now it's not adding anything to categories). I'm from the U.S. (Chicago). You're from Michigan, right? I think you mentioned that somewhere. Rocket000 03:05, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are a lot of wikipeople in that area. You 'seemed' like USA; the other user I contacted with this is User:Multichill with a python bot and the tag, and you both seem to have gotten administrative privileges since being on my watchlist. Python is the language I opted to use after my almost 20 year hiatus from computers (I didn't do that much with the pascal and B.A.S.I.C. back then, either). I don't want to keep you from the other things like helping with the VI stuff. I miss the midwest a lot. I had one kind of cool earthquake happen since I arrived here. Other than that, and it is weird to say this but, Michigan was much more exciting. -- carol 03:17, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was wrong, you weren't on my watchlist. I saw your nick doing positive things all over the place, enough that I thought you were on that list :)
I am not going to put you there either, you seem to be doing well enough not being on it.... -- carol 03:26, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
hehe.. I'm on everyone's watchlist, whether they like it or not. ;) Rocket000 03:32, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Elegant little but good changes and my template doesn't smell like paste any longer :) -- carol 06:49, 20 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changing licenses and more[edit]

Hi, although I recently was sure that I would probably never want to change any license, I more recently changed my mind:

Would it be (with acceptable effort) possible to change any-and-all of my picture uploads (which date back to August, 2007) the following way (I put most of the following into hidden text, to prevent the quoted templates to appear on screen display)

Change all picture descriptions on Commons (jpg, gif, png) (hidden text follows:)

Unfortunately, the "permission" template was sometimes (probably more often than not) put in another line, ANYWHERE below the

"|Permission=" line.

On any "PD"s I ever uploaded, no changes are required (as ANYone might legally have "borrowed" any of them from SOMEwhere ;)

Would you do such? In case I was not clear enough I'd prefer to be contaced by email.

deprecated function in your monobook.js[edit]

Dear user, I noticed that you use the includePage function in your monobook.js page.

This function is now obsolete, as the importScript function was introduced with rev:35064 to the MediaWiki Javascript core library wikibits.js. It also keeps track of already imported files.

To allow us to remove includePage from Mediawiki:Common.js I'd kindly ask you to replace its use with importScript (same syntax!). Thanks! --Dschwen 17:03, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done Interface between {{VI-add}} and {{VI}}[edit]

Hi Rocket, my template wiz!

I recently created {{VI-add}} (see its documentation) as a helper template for autogenerating two extra parameters in {{VI}}, which is used for some automated historical log categorization. The two parameters passed are sort of redundant as it is merely a different way to format the datetime of the promotion. When I implemented User:Slaunger/Sandbox/VI-countdown earlier today I got myself acquinted with {{#time:...}} and its many possibilities, and now I realize I could just pass one single extra parameter, like {{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}}, i.e., 20080522183650 as that can be used to make all the necessary internal time formatting inside {{VI}}. So I was thinking of simplifying the interface between these two templates by introducing some {{#time:...}} logic in {{VI}}. On the other hand the CURRENTTIMESTAMP rather user unfriendly representation as a parameter in the VI template may seem confusing for image page editors and fragile for editing (not that it should be edited by hand though). What is your opinion about this. Is the increased complexity of {{VI}} an issue if, potentially, the template could be used in many image pages in the future? -- Slaunger 18:36, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm... {{#time:}} (← that uses a handy link template I made :) is one function I haven't had much experience with. I always seem to make things more complicated than are necessary.. but it is something I want to get better at. Let me mess around with them a little bit and I'll get back to you. Rocket000 19:11, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Cool mwl template! Happy messing around. -- Slaunger 19:15, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I figured out I could just pass ~~~~~ as a third parameter to {{VI}} and then let {{#time:}} do the trick internally. I have simplified the {{VI-add}} template accordingly. Cheers, -- Slaunger 20:59, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What bot? You mean RocketBot? It just my account for doing things repetitive edits that don't need to flood RC. It mainly uses AWB and occasionally the pywikipedia framework. Generally, I use it to do tasks like link/template fixes, formatting, and (re)categorizing. I also take requests (if it's within my limited scripting abilities). It keeps me busy enough. Actually, just being a user keeps me busy enough. ;) Rocket000 13:57, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well you're the perfect one for the role, nobody can say that you would abuse the tools and you're pretty much active on this Wiki. Thank you for the kind words. I just checked up on your RfA—I'm so glad to see that much support in such a little time. Originally, I was a little concerned about the 2 month thing, but like I said before, on Commons, we're not so much about the rules (with the exception of the copyright-related ones). So much so, we don't even need a rule to tell us to ignore them! ;) Rocket000 14:17, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

huh? -- Slaunger 20:27, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You know what? Nevermind. I thought it was off some seconds... maybe a rounding error due to not taking them into account. (That's why I tried the timestamp), but now I'm thinking it's just the difference between computing it and seeing it. Rocket000 20:38, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, now I understand. -- Slaunger 20:42, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wait. There is something going on. Try purging the page when it's around mm:40. You might have to do it a couple times (helps to have the UTCLiveClock "gadget" turned on). Rocket000 20:48, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, it's consistently 20 seconds fast. Rocket000 20:50, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I tried enabling the gadget as you suggest, but it is not off by 20 secs here. It shifts within one second of the right time here. -- Slaunger 21:07, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I found out it's #expr that's causing the problem[4]. See if the following expression is true for you: 20240503233757 = 20240503233757. If it is refresh the page a few times. Rocket000 21:22, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, yes. Not easy to solve huh? One could get rid of the minutes in the countdown just to lower the symptoms caused by the cache thing. On the other hand I like the minutes are there as it gives a good feeling of progress (and stress not to mention ;-) ). -- Slaunger 21:02, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Image of Princess Irene of Hesse[edit]

Hi,

My name is Zoe, I am just starting here at wikipedia commons and have uploaded my first picture from the English Wikipedia. To tell you the truth, I am completely lost and I do not know how to procceed. The picture has been taken from the English Wikipedia (inicially uploaded by User Bookworm857158367) for the article speaking about the Princess. The picture is old, taken in the beginning of the XX century, so free at the moment. Could you, please, help me to answer the questions I have to and explain how to act in similar cases? P.S. I have licensed it in the same way as it is done in the English Wikipedia. Is that enough or I should do something else? Thanks beforehand. Zoe bird. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Zoe bird (talk • contribs) 01:23, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Zoe! Welcome to Commons! I know we kinda expect a lot of new users, but don't worry, you'll get hang of it. I would encourage you take a look at some of those links I gave you on your talk page. I'm sure, by the looks of things, those images you uploaded are free, but we always require a license no matter how old the image is. Even if a image isn't copyrightable, we still need to tag it (as public domain in this case). A source is usually required as well. The author and creation date should be included if known. If you are transferring images from another wiki, you should use CommonsHelper. It fills in all the info for you and makes things a lot less complicated. • Thanks for your quick answer! :-) You know, me and technic are not two things to keep together, if no one wishes a Pauly effect as a final result. But this time it looks as if it has worked. :-) P.S. out of pure curiosity - are you American? • Sorry. Wrote the name with a mistake. Wolfgang Pauli was a notorious specialist in nuclear physics who was known for his hatred for experiment. There is a joke telling that equipment hated Pauli as well and broke down at his presence. :-) The same happens to me, technic and Zoe are not two things to be put together. Excuse my curiosity, as a linguist I immediately felt the difference between by boring academic language and your vivid style. I am British, now living in CA. As for the signature, I I`ll try it right away! Thanks! Zoe --Zoe bird 00:05, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I' ve put there first suggestions for the desired "slimANDtricky" personally adaptable CC template:Pink_CC ;) -- please discuss there, unless you prefer to talk on it at some developer's "corner" (you can of course invite anyone to have a look at it -- you sure know whose opinion should possibly be asked for. At this given moment, it does not seem useful to me to ask at the village pump, or should I? First, one should become clear whether the desirable combination of (C) and cc logos would be allowed at all. Second, whether you like to do that job in the suggested way. My RfA[edit]

Just a note to thank you for your support in my RfA. So... thankyou, have a cupcake. -mattbuck (Talk) 19:06, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rocket, I have been mangling with this template to support image=subpage (by default) logic (excluding Image: prefix). If you look at the template documentation example it renders in an ugly was as compared to the example.jpg template at the top of the page. Can you figure out why? Also, you have done some fancy making it possible to exapnd the comments section but it does not seem to work in the example? -- Slaunger 08:10, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly is wrong with the comment thing? It works for me. Rocket000 08:37, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It did not have the expandable triangle. However, it does now?!? Can text expanded template text be left aligned? There is also something fishy about how the subject header is rendered as compared to the top example. -- Slaunger 09:48, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to try to figure out how to make the "review" the actual button that expands it. I hate that arrow, but I have to go explore the site's css. Even I can get them on the same line, that would be good. Rocket000 10:10, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It looks much better now. Youre welcome to try and improve on the expandable review. It is pretty cool. I was thinking of having an additional optional role parameter, i.e., role=creator|editor|uploader for the case where these roles are taken by another user than the nominator. The text would then adjust accordingly. Your opinion? -- Slaunger 10:20, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, let's do that. So it would be:

  • Nominator
  • Author (Creator is more natural for me. Isn't an author a person who writes stuff?)
  • Uploader
  • Editor?
What's the editor for? Like if someone restored an old work or something? Rocket000 10:25, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The editor is a user who has edited the authors work, e.g., noise removal, cropped, sharpened, tilt-correction, color-curves, and uploaded a new version over the original or created an edit with another image name, which is promoted in the end. -- Slaunger 10:29, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
By, the way, take care of yourself. Remember to sleep... -- Slaunger 10:34, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. That sounds good. I guess it depends how much you're going to change for each one. I think a {{#switch:}} would work nicely. Yeah, I agree with author/creator terms, but almost all our templates (like {{Information}}) use "author". I guess it doesn't matter. Rocket000 10:43, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What? Me sleep!? ;) Rocket000 10:43, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think I can figure out how to implement that. I'll work on it. -- Slaunger 10:50, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done I think... -- Slaunger 11:33, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

For inspiration in your efforts of making VI cat headers. I have added this on Category:Valued images candidates and it could be added in the subcats as well (or the functionality be integrated into your new cat templates). I hope you are sleeping now ;-) -- Slaunger 13:07, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Good afternoon - and {{VISC-stats}}. I had a cool thought. Using category page count one could make smart bars (based on tables with cells of widths governed by the ratio of the number of, say VICs promoted divided by all VICs). Surely it must have been done before, but it could be cool on COM:VI, showing an always updated promoted/undecided/declined gauge where the relative space is determined by the fraction of VICs in that cat. The bars should be colored in accordance with {{VIC-status-to-color}}. -- Slaunger 21:17, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's a great idea! I was so happy when they made finally made {{PAGESINCAT}} a magic word, but haven't seen much application yet. Awhile ago I had an idea to make a Commons stats template with the current number of FPs and QIs (this was before VIs) to be transcluded on Special:Statistics, but... those categories have a lot of project pages in there along with the images. So, if we want to keep these numbers accurate we must keep an eye on the contents of those cats. If there is any pages we want in there but don't want to affect the count, we can use something like {{#expr:{{PAGESINCAT:category}}-1}}. This gives me another idea... Rocket000 11:25, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
VI CategoryWatch - To help keep an eye on the categories. Rocket000 12:10, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, but what is the difference between using that bot and having the updated info immediately available as in my templates? The category structures are clean by the way, so we can base the number counts on cat counts. -- Slaunger 14:35, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, I meant that will help us humans make sure nothing's added to the categories that shouldn't be. For example, someone demonstrates a VI template on some page and it adds that page to a category. It will throw off the stats. The CategoryWatch bot has nothing to counting what's in the categories, it just reports to us when something is added to them. See User:Rocket000/CategoryWatch. Rocket000 14:44, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I get it now. Its another valuable addition to our modern lifestyle! (quote from "The Wrong Trousers"). -- Slaunger 14:54, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Although it spams my watchlist it is a pleasure to follow. I thought I could have busted you on the edit links, but even those have you managed to correct as well as the instructions for use of {{VICs}}. Pink_CC again[edit]

Hi, I noticed but now that you have fixed the "full-image-display" problem. So there is only one thing left: According "Gallery" function, the template is not (yet) recognised as a "cc-by-template". As this now is the only thing missing, what would have to be done to arrange this? Or would those friendly bots which create the horrifying "Not licensed" warnings recognise such file as "licensed" however? I'd very much like to give it a trial run, and Lewis (whom I respect a lot) later had made clear that he did not really mean we should not do it. But of course I can't offer it if, when used, evoques trouble for the uploader. What do you think about? Bot mistake[edit]

It looks like a mistake was made when your robot categorised POTD templates. Templates were added to Category:Potd Templates instead of the existing Category:Potd templates. Maybe you can fix that? /Ö 21:36, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, crap. Yeah, I'll fix that. Thanks for letting me know. Rocket000 21:37, 29 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Status shortcuts[edit]

Hi Rocket,

Although the intention is good I am not so sure that this is a good idea as a lot of template logic depends on the exact value of the status parameter, and by having these shortcuts we also need to take all these alternative values into account in other templates which use the status parameter (which is quite a lot actually). That will make testing of existing and new templates more elaborate and chances for making implementation errors is larger. -- Slaunger 21:41, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmm.. Well, why not just use the exact values when they are needed? The alternate forms shouldn't make a difference on how you use the template in those situations, right? I added them when I was working on some graphs and got tried of typing the whole word out. Also I needed to use capitals but the template (before my changes) was case-sensitive. Aren't they ok for uses where other templates aren't involved? Rocket000 21:47, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. I'm not currently using them so they can be removed if they really need to be. Rocket000 21:51, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm... I just do not like templates to be inconsistent in what is allowed as parameters. Like, {{VIC-is-status-valid}}. Here I really, really prefer that an invalid status parameter is coupled to the black color. If you need such a hack I rather prefer a more sloppy intermediate proxy template which passes the calls to the stringent veriosn used internally in {{VIC}} and several other templates. -- Slaunger 21:55, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I forgot about the default catch-all for invalid values. I guess things like "s" and "+" should be consider invalid. Rocket000 21:59, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, Rocket. -- Slaunger 22:14, 30 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Admin Questions[edit]

I'm wondering if I'm doing everything ok now. Take look at my log if you don't mind. Thanks --Kanonkas(talk) 12:48, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I gave my first block today, I asked Lewis about it and he said 1 month. I am very strict on these kind of issues, I don't really do like to give blocks but if it's needed to stop then I will do it. If you could say any words about it, then that would be great. --Kanonkas(talk) 14:14, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Look at you talking like a seasoned admin already. ;) Yes, it appears the block was in order. I have feeling I blocked this guy before (different username). Just don't be too quick to block—ask what good it can do and never use it as a way of punishment. (I'm not talking about this time. Just in general.) Rocket000 16:47, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, thanks :) Of course, never as a punishment. I know you hate en wiki policy and all when I take it on commons, but take a look at cool down blocks. I belive that's what you're exactly are meaning. In other words "Blocks are intended to reduce the likelihood of future problems, by either removing, or encouraging change in, a source of disruption. They are not intended for use in retaliation, as punishment, or where there is no current conduct issue which is of concern." --Kanonkas(talk) 19:40, 1 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. I see blocks as a last measure. It's usually the last thing I consider (unless it's blatant vandalism/spamming). You'll find some users don't respond to warnings at all. They will just keep uploading copyvios until someone blocks them. Rocket000 13:10, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This time this action happend. I asked Rama about this one, he said I should unblock when the user understands our licensing policy. --Kanonkas(talk) 13:53, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with that. I wouldn't have done a indef block for a first block, though. Also, it might not do anything, but you should always try to give a final warning. Rocket000 13:59, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know, I'm not really that strict I try to be more mellow and understand the user might be new about image licensing. Rama on the other hand, said that was the appropriate block . Should the block be changed? --Kanonkas(talk) 14:07, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's fine. Just watch his talk page in case he's willing to play>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki by the rules. Rocket000 14:12, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like I have to block someone again I'm willing to give a 1 week to 1 month block for re-uploading the content even though I gave the user warnings about it. Take a look, and give me an answer. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:03, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Good. You see, blocking is one of my least favorite things. Since I hardly ever do it, I don't always know what a good amount of time is. Herby is our blocking king. :) Rocket000 15:21, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Now he has a given a lot of blocks. I'll ask more questions later on. I just hope it isn't about a block again. Thanks for your help again. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:27, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template:User Norwegian and I thought about creating a new template for this image too. Would you like to help me with creating them? --Kanonkas(talk) 14:58, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Should I just make you a template where all you got to do is put in the image name, with optional link and/or hover text? Rocket000 (talk) 15:06, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep that would help a lot! Thanks again. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:10, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, parameters don't work with <imagemap>. I know a workaround but it will make it a lot more complex. I think it's better just to make them individually and customized them per user page (since everyone won't have them in the same spots). Rocket000 (talk) 15:30, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, though I'm not so good with this. You can create a subpage on my user page and work it out. Thanks again, I do apprecciate it! :) --Kanonkas(talk) 15:34, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Image:Clerk-fez.png? We don't have clerks here. It is for those who are clerks on en.wp? Rocket000 (talk) 15:39, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know, I just want it as a fancy user template heh. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:44, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have some problems with that "User Norwegian" template, when I try to use it as a icon on my user page I get the same problem as with the mediation template. I tried to use the same format again at the end just like this here: {{User Norwegian|3}} but that didn't work. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:49, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

(←) That's cause I didn't do it on that one. :) I'm going to have to make you a custom template because if I put an absolute position on a third one it most likely won't look right for someone with different icons or a different order. (Only doing it for one icon won't make that much of a difference, but the further you get away from the corner, the more it can be off). So give me a list of images you want on your user pages and in what order (left to right) and I'll make it for you. Rocket000 (talk) 15:56, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well I can't come up with anything now but thought I could create protection notes, the ones we have now doesn't look so nice. Take a look at the English Wikipedia, but if you have some nice icons show me! :) Thanks again. --Kanonkas(talk) 16:26, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I made that template anyway. So try it out. Let me know if you have any problems or if I need to explain it better. What wrong with {{Protected}}? Or did you mean the little padlock in the corner? Rocket000 (talk) 16:31, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well I thought about this template and what you just said, the little padlock. --Kanonkas(talk) 16:40, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I like the little padlock, but remember, we don't mark semi-protected pages here. The talk page ones are optional (really only for pages with a lot of discussion). The thing is with {{Protected}} there's sometimes a reason given and you can't see that if it's just an icon. I should make {{Protected template}} a little icon by default. Part of me still likes the big message though, so admins don't forget/overlook protected pages and the continue to build up. Sometimes I just want to make a really really ugly one to deter people from using protection too much :D. Rocket000 (talk) 16:51, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm wondering you've got some useful sites where images are free and can be uploaded here. Note: Please post U.S. gov sites too. Thanks. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:33, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a programmer so I don't if I can be of much help, but I'm pretty good AWB if you need help with that. I use that for almost everything RocketBot does. Unless you're planning to make a bot account, I would suggest asking someone with a bot flag to do whatever you need done. I'll be happy to take on requests if they are not too hard, else you can make requests on COM:BR. (New section time. This page is getting long.) Rocket000 (talk) 05:57, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Le Behnam and his disruption again[edit]

Hi, after you've warned and explained to User:Le Behnam not to remove categories from Image:S. J. al-Afghani.jpg he has done to do it again [5]. After several administrators deciding to keep the following images, User:Le Behnam again and again marks them for deletion. [6], [7] I think the only way he will learn is if you block him because everything else failed.--Executioner 14:05, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for letting me know. I reverted the deletion tagging (he didn't actually create a new DR) and gave him a final warning for removing the categories. Rocket000 14:44, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. We forgot to revert this one. Le Behnam should also stop accusing others as being sockpuppets without filing a checkuser. This guy is an ethnic Tajik from Canada and is an extreme basher of ethnic Pashtuns. I happen to come across him in many other online websites where he uses the worst insults you can imagine towards Pashtuns. Most bashers stop at some point but not this user, he has a job to bash.--Executioner 15:18, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Reverted. There's no need to call someone an "extreme basher"—even if true. Let his actions speak for themselves. I know it can be hard at times, but we must always try to be civil and avoid name-calling. Just like they say, calling a vandal a vandal doesn't help anything. Rocket, that image have just been edited to much. What do you say about a fully protection till this dispute is over? Both of the users can discuss this on the talk page (Which I've already seen they have done) but they've had plenty of time discussing this, and just reverting each others actions is just disruptive. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:21, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Kanonkas, there's quite a history here. Page protection hasn't worked in the past. These two users will just find something else to edit-war over. I outlined my solution here. Executioner so far has kept up his side of the deal, but Le Behnam hasn't. A gave him a final warning, and that's as much as I plan to do right now. Rocket000 15:42, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As you say, I won't protect it for now. If Le Behnam do this again, what appropriate block is needed? Should we bring this up on the AN board again? --Kanonkas(talk) 15:56, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I will block if he continues to remove the categories. They are welcome to bring it to COM:AN, but there's nothing new here. Same old dispute that's been going on forever. Rocket000 16:00, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay we will just leave the case. By the block I meant, how long is it appropriate to block the user? --Kanonkas(talk) 16:09, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure. We'll cross that bridge if/when we get to it. ;) Rocket000 16:13, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

VI closure[edit]

Hi Rocket, my VIngman! (Good joke, was it not?)

The promotion of the first VI is coming up this UTC night I think. Would you have the honour of promoting the first VI? Michael and I have been involved in the reviews in different roles whereas you have stayed neutral so you would make a good initial closer. I therefore think it would be kinda cool if you would promote the first batch and add an announcement about it on COM:VP giving a short status on the (IMO) flying start? It is just for this first time. The promotion procedure for VICs is drafted on COM:VIC talk. The step about adding the image to the real category structure is disputed so I think we should skip that by now. I also have not written about VIS closure. Here you have to be creative I think. Personally, I am fatigued, tired and exhausted. Not because it is frustrating or anything. Actually, I am releived with how everything is proceeding right now (after some initial glitches). Just think the air has gone out of the balloon (Danish saying) now that it is on wheels trying to interlace all this into a normal working day, kids and family. -- Slaunger 21:30, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! I'd love to. Let's see... it's UTC night now, do you mean this time tomorrow? Rocket000 21:46, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OMG I am too tired! I just reread Commons:Valued image candidates/Promotion rules. It is not until June 8 a few hours after 0:00 UTC that the first VIs can be promoted (I recalled it as 48 hours after nom). Good, that gives a little more time to settle procedures for VISs. Good night. -- Slaunger 22:02, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hahaha.. Ok, I'll wait till then. Good night. Rocket000 22:04, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Small Request[edit]

Hello Rocket000,

My name is Aviad, and I'm a young Israeli Wikipedian (so is Noa). It turns out that Noa didn't like the fact that I have answered instead of her here. If you can give her some assignment, some new Hebrew translation task, That will be great. Just don't tell her that I sent you. Your friend, Gridge 23:15, 2 June 2008 (UTC).[reply]

Hehe, ok. :-) I'll find something; we've got plenty of templates needing translation. Thanks. Rocket000 23:29, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pink_CC forever ;) ?[edit]

Hi,

  1. This is not a bug, because I never called for such feature, but: I just misused the link= #4 parameter to insert a mail address there, which becomes duplicated (See User:WeHaWoe/Pink_CC). If on the other hand I use {{User:WeHaWoe/Pink CC|User:Rocket000|Displayed name|Specified attribution||info@wikipedia.org}} (text in #5), there's of course no display at all. If that can be repaired at reasonable expense (it obviously depends from IF/OR conditions), it would enhance usability again (no need to make it clickable, as some users might anyways prefer to insert "me(at)somewhere.tv" to prevent crawlers. Forget about the brackets -- no matter whether they show up or not, the simplest solution would do best. It might even be an idea not to have the link clickable.
  2. Please check+correct my spelling+grammar in Pink_CC.
  3. I transferred relevant texts from /deTalk to User_talk:WeHaWoe/TestSite and rearranged thatone. Please check whether you miss anything important for reasonably documenting the project.
  4. How do you think about having "speedydeleted" our stuff from deTalk? (In deWP such would be hardly allowed, but I think if you agree this might be done here.) In case you agree+can, delete. Thanks. -- WeHaWoe 11:01, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi: Quick -- not dirty ;))
However I forgot about one plea: two "br/" tags separate the logos too much, a single one does not work. Is there a workaround? One ides was to invisibly add space to the upper icon's bottom, or would some invisible "spacer.gif" work, or...? --WeHaWoe 11:36, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Newbie's troubles[edit]

  • Please have a look at User talk:DenghiùComm where I've created a mess: TOC+Babelbox overlap "welcome" template. Maybe that could be repaired easily?
I don't see any mess. (Rocket000 22:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC))
I meant that version which I removed after. WeHaWoe 06:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC) (rm obsolete text.)[reply]
Anyways it is an issue to me to prevent boxes from overlapping -- is there a simple way to manage? I for instance had the welcome box on my page for quite some time, in case I'd like to look up, but in case some talk would have happened (which was not the case), it would habe been desirable to have the TOC above that huge box. And, for almost-non-English speakers, the babelbox too, to inform admins (as in that cas) as it is not useful to leave a note in a language which probably would not be unterstood: The guy speaks fairly well German, and of the three Admins who warned him, 2 are Germans, and Kanonkas has basic knowledge (or might have passed the "job" to a comrade) WeHaWoe 06:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Even Newbies can do valuable contributions, I learn: There's a Pink_CC/it version by now ;)) Please check whether I made no mistake in setting up that page. TX, --WeHaWoe 12:24, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I strongly suggest to display some line like "Please choose a language" in the upmost line or at the top of the languages box of "Template:Welcome", because it happens quite often that a less-than-perfect English speaking newbie is so overwhelmed by all that (hard-to-understand) information in English that he/she doesn't even notice what the box is for (could well be links to other wiki projects, kind of self-advertising(?)) --WeHaWoe 16:44, 3 June 2008
We could include that line, but if they don't understand English it won't do much good anyway. :) Rocket000 22:42, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, first, understanding no English at all: I hardly believe that someone would open an account here -- or am I wrong?
Second, besides farest eastern "Europe", where Russian was first choice for a foreign language for a very long time, the triplet de/en/fr works fairly well in Europe and would not fill more than one line.
Third, in case someone can create an account frome some "national portal" (I'm not aware whether/how this is done), it might be an idea to load the appropriate template from the beginning).
BTW: there sure are statistics on the mumbers of members joining Commons. Where? Are they about dozens or hundreds a day, average? --WeHaWoe 06:33, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

More questions[edit]

  • What is the template for auto-archieving? (I mean, to attract some bot to archive stuff which is "Number-of-days" old?
  • What can be done get the gallery tool to NOT to note big fat red no license tag! for pics tagged by Pink_CC, whilst in the row beneath, same line, correctly indicating "Category:cc-by-sa-3.0"? (see ;)) and smile) --WeHaWoe 12:24, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Final warning[edit]

Hi Le Behnam. I'm afraid it has come to this. You have been asked many times not to remove images from categories that Executioner added without coming to an agreement beforehand, however, I see you continue to do so.[8] So take this as your final warning; if this behavior continues you will be blocked. I don't want to do that, but this has gone on far too long. Sorry. Rocket000 14:38, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The reason I was removing that category from the image is because there is no source claiming him as Pashtun other than user:Executioner. On the countrary, scholarly sources say he was from Iran which makes extremely unlikely that he was Pashtun, and on WikipediaEn there is no mention of him being Pashtun. Please take a look at the subject's article on the English Wikipedia and let me know what you think. Jamal a-Din Asadabadi. Thanks. Le Behnam 17:38, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nearly all the edits done to that article of al-Afghani in Wikipedia is by him and is close mate who is a pro-Iranian just as Le Behnam is. They both used many sockpuppets to do it, they even changed his al-Afghan last name to Asadabadi by claiming that their father recognized him by that name so everyone else should too. See w:Talk:Sayyid Jamal al-Din al-Afghani Asadabadi That proves how far these pro-Iranians want to go and hide al-Afghani's true identity. I have already explained that Afghan was used for Pashtun people in 1800s and prior. That's why when you see all historical record of the past you only see "Afghan" written for the Pashtun people. According to all sources, al-Afghan, he himself, told everyone in the world that he was Afghan. We have to follow what al-Afghan told the world, not what others may think about him because that is just epculations. Le Behnam keeps talking about place of birth. The category I've added is about his ethnicity, it's not about his place of birth.--Executioner 19:48, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Asadabad is his home town in Iran. You still have not provided a single source for him being Pashtun, only wild speculation. Iranians have always used Afghani to refer to all inhabitants of Afghanistan and he changed his last name to al-Afghani later in life as is explained on his article on the English Wikipedia. Le Behnam 05:40, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Guys, don't start this here. Le Behnam, I know your intentions are good, but simply removing the category again and again doesn't do any good. It's disruptive. This is why you must use the talk page to agree on how the image should be categorized. (and not my talk page ;) Rocket000 22:47, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, but you gave me a warning so I thought I'd explain since Executioner is not listening even though there is another user on the talk page siding with me on this. Also, I think you should have given him a warning also, especially since I have another user siding with me so the consensus is to remove Pashtun category. Le Behnam 05:40, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would give him a warning if he was removing one of your categories. I'll have a look at the talk page in a bit and see if there's any consensus. Rocket000 05:54, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Le Behnam is now writing insult messages on my talk page, by calling ethnic Pashtun kings of Afghanistan as pedophiles. [9] The source says the young boy in the Image:Dost Mohammad Khan of Afghanistan with his son.jpg is in fact his youngest son but Le Behnam saying that is his sex toy or something like that. Now do you see Le Behnam's intentions? He is attacking Pashtun people.--Executioner 20:37, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't take things so personal. He didn't call you a pedophile. He said "Dost Mohammed Khan and other Mohammedzais" are known for pedophilia. If he's incorrect, just tell him that. Or do you take it as a general assault on your ethnicity? (I'm not familiar enough to understand if there's any implied racism.) Rocket000 20:57, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I'm from Afghanistan and if someone says all the kings from my country and other W:Mohammadzai's (W:Pashtun tribe) were known as pedophiles then it would mean he is attacking me, my country and my people. There is not a single accusation out there of any of this false claims. I'm not taking Le Behnam's words serious here, just wanted to let you know about this so maybe you could talk to him again. It seems to me like you are just trying to find ways to defend his actions. If you keep letting him slip by then he will never stop, he will begin to think that he is in control over you. He is not showing any respect to other editors, he also has no respect for your warning. It's upto you but I think he should be blocked right about now. Blocking him is not going to turn me on because he seldomly comes here, but it will make him think twice before he tries to disrupt again. I'd like to ask you something else...what's the chances of me becoming an adminstrator?--Executioner 22:43, 5 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Le Behnam is reverting my talk page and telling me the same nonsense again. [10] I refuse to reply because he should read the source before he makes false claims. The source is w:British Library, which is England or UK's national library and says that the lithography shows Dost Mohammad and his youngest son. [11] If you search "Dost Mahommed, King of Caubul, and his youngest son" at http://www.bl.uk/ you'll see it matches the information I presented under the photo. So why is Le Behnam saying that boy in the image is not his son and mention of pedophile stuff? This explains that Le Behnam is a disruptive user and I think he is also creating sockpuppets here [12] to secretly upload falsely-made maps. User:Gulagha must be him because he uploaded the image of the map and then added it to EN Wikipedia w:Greater Khorasan article a day or two later. [13] That Toronto based IP is Le Behnam, with no doubt. [14] The image of the map was not in any category for someone else to easily find it. Most images Le Behnam uploaded were uncategorized the same way Gulagha uploaded his image of the map.--Executioner 10:02, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please understand I see blocks as a last measure. I rather see disputes worked out without any admin action. Most of the time blocks don't end disputes. They just postpone them for awhile. So far, the conflict has solely been between you two. It doesn't matter what side of the dispute you are on—you are still part of it. One of the things people look for in potential admins is there ability to get along with others. Rocket000 14:39, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Uh what[edit]

I did try and protect it. That's the strange thing. I just went and did exactly the same thing just now, and it didn't work. No log entry, no error message, no page. question about templates[edit]

I am wondering what the advantage is to having a template do the redirection. I ask this at a point where I am unable to determine advantages or disadvantages for either -- with the exception that (in my mind and experiences) templates are more vulnerable as one edit can change how many pages work.

The "redirection" button on the browser edit window is the only 'button' I used, btw. So template redirection means that I can configure without the buttons. It is such an incredibly personal preference that I don't think it qualifies as an advantage or disadvantage.

The action of the redirection of pages and categories has been really nice for managing the non-scientific problems of the science of well, for me botany but it works for anything in the biologically named world. Heh, all of my other redirections have been mis-spellings usually. It has been a long while since eighth grade.... -- carol (tomes) 03:24, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Are you talking about category "redirects" like what {{Seecat}} is for? For non-categories you should always use #REDIRECT [[]], because that's the only thing that really redirects (i.e. takes you directly to the target). Categories can use either method. It depends on the category, but usually the soft redirect, {{Seecat}}, is the preferred method. See the first two subcategories of Category:Category redirects for what I consider the main benefit of this. (Those subcats are both filled automatically by the seecat template.) For misspellings, just tag it with {{speedy|typo}}—as it won't likely be used. Or just drop me a note because I love deleting redirects and I don't know why. Rocket000 03:44, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am asking simply what the advantages are to this type of change. There is a point between helpfully identified storage and documentation, to me, a category with enough information included is helpful storage. A gallery with a pasted list of image names (with the exception of a few galleries) is a not so helpful way to store images. Interesting that I type this now as I am working with some galleries which have been helpful due to lack of information because they should have already been looked at and evaluated for usefulness for their purpose so the blind lists in the gallery are nice.
To upload an image or a bunch of images, know what they are and find the most logical category for it is so easy and nice. It seems the least difficult and the least rude to contributors. I might very well be wrong about this assessment. -- carol (tomes) 04:10, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I see what you mean. You're doing it the Wikipedia way, where the redirects show up in other categories so people can find the content even if they don't know the other name. In this case, the hard redirect (#REDIRECT) would be better. I'll work out a system for this. Many people (and bots) will convert the redirect just because it's a category. Rocket000 04:29, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, interesting. I did not know that this was a 'wikipedia' way. I started to do that because it made sense to manage the mess that is made from several hundred years of naming and renaming (and maybe a few recent ones that were disguised as being from long ago). There is information published about some plants under two names. That being said, I saw evidence of stuff being published about mispelled species so I started to wonder if some of those doi links were more like requests for papers instead of a paper existing. So, I did not make redirections for all of the names, just some of them. That one plant family is really large and they are breaking it into smaller groups and it is good.
On a personal note, you are writing software now and that is kind of cool. Have you yet had the experience that software you have written is helpful for many people or makes something nice for others to use? -- carol (tomes) 05:14, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I'm nowhere near that level yet. :) I mainly try to "hack" software others have made to do what I want. It's anything but user-friendly or portable. I just started getting into Python, that's a fun language. Rocket000 05:22, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
To be very honest, I did not write the functional parts of the stuff that I think I see being used very successfully elsewhere. In the time between working on paper with what was at that time a theoretical language in 1986 or 1987 and then seeing it in actuality here (sorry about the language there) in 2002, I learned gardening, and how to use the weeds to cure the build up of problems my body had acquired over time. The internet connection was long distance and the computer was kind of boring for any applications where I was. It is a tool towards accomplishing a task to me. That ten to twelve year difference really made it clear to me that I would probably not be able to make a living writing this stuff -- that one example, I wrote one little solution that really made me feel good and quit attending the class. 12 years later, there are several people who were writing similar and many much more complex programs for what was no longer a theory in a book. I thought that my contribution of managing the people well (enough) and asking for such a versatile mechanism to be written would be an accomplishment that would help me to afford the lifestyle that was going on around me all that while.
I did not write anything for KIM, but I learned everything you need to know about game theory. I will stand by that statement maybe forever, as anything beyond that is like Spock's three dimensional chess which looked really good for television. Oh, RPG is not gaming, it is stupid and it is not the kind of stupid I wrote about on my web site either. I think it probably interfers a lot with real personality development. In 1982, Algol looked the most promising of everything I had access to. I saw some graph of where languages came from and morphed into and that seemed to have been on the C tree, however, Python looked more like it to me, 20 years later. I don't know what you did to deserve all of this from me, it is my defense for thinking that I would not be able to catch up with and keep up with script and application writers. It is as much of a reality check for me as it may or may not be interesting to you. I never thought of or that I could or should hack the work computers at the places where I was employed. That means that my access to the tool was really limited with many years in between. My brother saved a lot of money and bought a computer in 1992; I was trying to put my money into an upgrade in the life I was living where I was. It didn't work out that way, but I think it was the right decision and still do. The failure of it was that it required the honesty of the people I was supposed to be upgrading it with. Sorry about this all, good luck for managing your life. btw, are you Dschwen? There was some talk from that user about learning to use python.... -- carol (tomes) 06:20, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
...thanks for sharing all that with me. :) No, I'm not Dschwen, but speaking of which, he's (hopefully) going to help me with some JavaScript for some templates I'm working on (mainly {{QICpromoted}}/{{VICpromoted}}). Rocket000 06:47, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That url to bf, which is the inspiration for my template, btw -- should be worth all of the other stuff here. Had you seen that before? The name is not what I would have chosen for it when I learned about it, but it fits. Life used to be funnier. -- carol (tomes) 07:23, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, the name sounded familiar but I didn't know what it was. I was looking at the wiki article on it. Pretty crazy. Rocket000 07:30, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That. I am trying to write a article about it now, thank you for your patience and eh inspiration here. I left my paper somewhere that I want to think it is safe and will stay safe. I like to brag about things as much as other people perhaps, but not often is there a chance to brag about this -- as was playing with KIM. And I should not brag too much as in the examples at that url, I can't figure out what "Extract power of prime s from r." even means -- but my program squared x. 22 years ago is a very long time ago in computerland. And then to further reduce whatever bragging rights I might think I should have for this -- it is in the first chapter of the book.
Here is some "I have been there" advice though, take it if you want to or not. I stopped consuming alcohol then. I did not have a problem with over-consumption, but I started to notice that even one drink (one 12 oz beer or the equivalent) reduced my ability to grasp some of this stuff and to learn more. All of the mathematics -- the calculus, the physics and this extremely simple stuff, heh. I used to claim that it even seemed to erase what I knew already so that just a little would be like a step or two backwards. I am not the fastest learner of things, so the steps back were particularly horrible to work with.
bf seems to be a little more enabled that the URM. When I went back to school in 1996, the same teacher was teaching Linear Algebra (I did ok in elementary linear algebra but others in the class did much better than me) -- and that was 10 years later with little or no mathematics in between. I figured out how to make a particularly complicated proof, decided that linear algebra was actually easier than elementary linear algebra and stopped attending the class. I really love that stuff, although, it is difficult to see that in my attendance record. I really really really wanted to teach calculus at the community college or high school level -- these last few years have been kind of rude and so much what I had not planned nor felt qualified for.
No one but a dork would understand this I think, but I really wanted to be somewhere that I could go and sit in on a calculus class every once in a while. There are very few activities that are that much fun to me, especially since I am unable to wrap my brain around the idea that they want you also to take classes about how to teach things. My university was good in that they required a real major along with the education major, but then it was difficult because after a few successes in the real major and in teaching, I was (and still am) unwilling to sit in their 'how to teach' classes. (Some universities have special 'mathematics' classes for their teaching students which are different from the classes offered by the Math department, for example). My brain is kind of broken for what seems to me to be broken 'imaginary' systems. If you can avoid that, and jump through their stupid hoops and such, it would be a good thing. On the other hand, I wonder how much it dulls the brain for real and good logic. It is such a stupid and wrong world, I am very surprised with how sweet the actual inhabitants of it are.
A warm but not too warm thank you for the space here and for the dork skin. -- carol (tomes) 09:45, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RFA -- Thank You![edit]

Thank you for your support & comments in my RFA!!

I figured a bunch of Lolcats were more fun that me trying to write a logical "thank you". Silly, Aren't they?

ShakataGaNai Talk

An opinion if you have one[edit]

I thought that this was kind of elegant and an easy to understand example for the en:Unlimited Register Machine:

f(x) = 0, if x = 0
f(x) = 1, if x != 0

  1. Z(2)
  2. J(1,2,4)
  3. S(2)

and this similar example:

f(x,y) = 0, if x = y
f(x,y) = 1, if x != y

  1. Z(3)
  2. J(1,2,4)
  3. S(3)

I obviously have to work though putting the mathematical notation into wiki notation, I am here with a purpose. To see if these examples also make sense to someone with at least a little background in computability logic who (maybe) had never seen anything like this. I am used to real 'talk' not typing on talk pages and in a real conversation, the question would start with 'does this make sense to you?' and end with something like 'should I draw a picture of the tape?'

I gotta say, I was once again charmed by how elegant things look when there are only four instructions to work with. I realize also that this example isn't necessarily in need of an 'unlimited' register machine, but none of the solutions needed that, iirc.

Also, they are both tuples! Yay! -- carol (tomes) 11:05, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think it makes sense... I'm a little too tired right now to fully wrap my brain around it but I'll have another look at after some sleep. :) Rocket000 18:36, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You pointed me to that category upon my deletion request. But does that then mean that they are all allowed, being clearly the one-and-only subject of those images, or does it have to be discussed, or did I miss something somewhere? Cheers Lycaon 13:10, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On recognition of "Pink_CC", again.[edit]

Hi, I edited this evening Image:Margret Hofheinz-Döring, Das Geschenk, Strukturbild, 1967.jpg in order to comply to WP standards, but still get the warning from the gallery tool. What to do about it? (please note my up to now non-answered question from today, at #More questions and have a look at version compare ("Pink" template reduced description filesize by app. 30% in the shown case, whilst improving on detail.) --WeHaWoe 16:22, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I see. There's nothing really we can do about that. :( The gallery tool doesn't recognize the template. I wouldn't worry about that unless some bot starts tagging the images as missing a license. You can leave a message on the tool's creator's talk page. The template for the auto archiving bot is {{User:MiszaBot/config}}. Cheers, Rocket000 18:26, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

regarding my comment to NisarKand[edit]

Hello. I think Executioner mislead you. He always manipulates admins as he did on the EnWiki. I did raise a valid question and pointed out to him that Dost Mohammed Khan was a known pedophile. That is not intended to offend him since he is not Dost Mohammed Khan. I also stated that Mohammedzais are known for pedophilia which is true. Again that would not offend him since he is not of the Mohammedzai tribe. So my intentions were not to offend him but to let him know what that girl/boy is really doing in that picture. Le Behnam 06:35, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That is not a girl, it's a boy and he is the son of that man who you see in the image. Read over the top of the image here --->Dost Mahommed, King of Caubul, and his youngest son Your intentions are showing to be that of a sick minded person. Only sick minded people would view someone who's with their child as a pedophile because normal people do not have sex with their children. You say that Dost Mohammad Khan was pedophile but where is your proof? Why are you always involved with bashing Pashtun people? Did they abuse you in any way? You say Executioner is not of Mohammadzai tribe, what if he is? I think you should move on with your life and find something useful to do. You should also see a psychiatrist because may be you have some kind of mental disorder. My intentions are not to offend you but to help you because I help people who are in need of help.--Executioner 23:36, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Talking Bullshit[edit]

Can you give me an example? Rocket000 20:24, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I was over-sensitive: the ip tagged a quantity of my pics with an inexisting category, but created that category later - so I saw red category names instead of the one I had given and was alarmed. I'm in talk on that with user talk:Rama#On Categories, Sub-Cat etc meanwhile, so, you "lost one job" ;) -- WeHaWoe 16:54, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

VI promotion[edit]

Hi Rocket, Unless an oppose vote is placed on Commons:Valued image candidates/Manhattan Bridge Construction 1909.jpg the first VI can be promoted beginning June 8, at 04:30 (UTC). Will you, as an uninvolved party in the review be capable of doing the promotion shortly thereafter? -- Slaunger 20:34, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delay. I hope I did everything right. Rocket000 14:23, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. There is a real life outside of Commons, which is more important! Did you try to follow the instructions in Commons:Valued image closure? I have added parameters to the VI template on the image page and removed the candidate form the candidates list. -- Slaunger 14:50, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Have you got any idea why I can't expand the review section in the {{VICpromoted}} on my talk page? I am using IE on Vista. -- Slaunger 14:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It works fine for me with Firefox. Did it use to work for you on IE? Rocket000 14:56, 8 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I always use IE on Windows (XP or Vista). It used to work. -- Slaunger 14:00, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Mayors from New Orleans"?[edit]

I wish to state my objection to the move of "Category:Mayors of New Orleans" to "Category:Mayors from New Orleans". The new name IMO sounds absurd (what does it refer to-- perhaps a mayor of some city in another state who was born in New Orleans?) and some of the parent categories now seem non-existant. There was no discussion about renaming this category on the talk page nor immediate parent categories before the move. I request a reversal of this move. I am leaving a similar message on at User talk:Siebrand. Thank you for your attention. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 17:37, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You're right. "Mayors from New Orleans" sounds better. I guess it can be an exception to the "<something> from <place>" standard naming convention. What do you think about "Judges from/of somewhere? Rocket000 (talk) 17:50, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. "Mayors of (City)" seems more reasonable to me. Off hand, I think that would probably go for most elective offices (eg, "Governors of Missouri" rather than "Governors from (state)". IMO conventions are good guidelines, but shouldn't be pushed to absolute uniformity if it comes at the expense of clear language and logical description. I have started a listing at Commons:Categories for discussion/Current requests/2008/06/Category:Mayors from New Orleans; if you'd care to express your opinion of this specific case there it would be appreciated. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:03, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see you've already taken care of it! Swift work. Thanks much. Best wishes, -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:06, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I think this would be a good opportunity to discuss any other "<occupation> from/of <place>" issues. Like what about politicians? Probably respond at the CFD since it's there. Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 18:10, 15 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please restore {{Sourcetext}}? If you want it gone, please nominate for deltion. I think it can be useful on the commons. Evrik (talk) 18:54, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done. It just looked like it was one of many unused templates transfered from another project and didn't have any use here, but if you think it could be useful, I'll take your word for it. It's not hurting anything by being here. I just like to keep the template space clean and well-organized so we don't need up like en.wp or something where it's beyond unmanageable. As long as someone wants it (and hopefully make use of it) then I have no problem with it. Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 00:24, 17 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My license templates[edit]

Hi Rocket000,
I don't have time to fight this battle with you but I am not happy at all with your change. Please read through this and revert back to how I had the previously. I sincerely hope this can be done amicably as I won't be able to take this any further till mid year break in June. Regards, --Fir0002 www 11:42, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, but that would be against our policy. I'm not sure why your personal templates that no one else has any use for should go in the template namespace. What's the difference anyway? I didn't change your templates at all. I didn't subst: them like some people would. I didn't convert to a standard license. You're lucky I didn't follow other guidelines. Remember, there is no ownership. No one should really be changing your licenses anyway so why leave them in the template namespace? At least, the user namespace gives you a little control of your content. This a good thing. Why are you not happy with it? - Rocket000 11:52, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to do this to you but I really will have to postpone this argument till June. Incidentally I had a quick look over the policy you linked, and seems my templates are covered in the "acceptable" paragraph: Users can use such templates to specify how they want to be attributed, e.g. by their real name or username. Some "advertising" for the user's work is allowed, such as a link to an external website (portfolio/gallery). (As we discourage image watermarks, the image page is the appropriate place for such "advertising".) Requests for notification about use are allowed. (Only requests, not requirements.) A notice such as "other terms/higher resolution available on request" are allowed. Contact details are allowed. Technical details such as camera model or method of creation of the file/s are allowed. Incidentally if you are planning on removing individual license templates you've a huge task ahead of you as there are many users on commons using them. Many users who will hopefully have the time to defend them. Anyway as I said I can't go into this any more just now and so don't feel snubbed or anything if I don't reply to any future comments you make between now and June. --Fir0002 www 08:36, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I think you're misunderstanding what I did. I didn't replace your license at all. I just renamed it. It's perfectly ok to have templates like that. It's the same for personal galleries, they're ok, but they belong in the user space because they're not useful to anyone else. - Rocket000 21:10, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry to drag this up but I'm back now. I see no reason whatsoever that the template should be moved into the userspace. It's a template. It belongs in the template userpace. It is a useful template. I upload a lot of photos. It is not doing anyone any harm. Shifting it around is merely petty beauracratic paper pushing. It doesn't sound like much but I find it annoying to have to type User:Fir0002/200 rather than Fir0002 200 particularly since I'm well accustomed to the later method. As I stated before I'm by no means the only one with an individual template in the template space (eg Template:Ram-Man Camera 1). I don't know how you did the edit to each photo (a bot I supppose) to make the change, but please revert my photos to their original state. Regards, --Fir0002 www 11:56, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This was done in accordance to COM:USER. There are many reasons custom templates (especially license ones) belong in the user namespace. Commons is multilingual, and when someone sees "User:" they will instantly know it's a user template. Not being in that namespace it can cause confusion over the use of template (e.g. someone may think it just some non-standard template and convert to a standard one without you knowing). Being the user namespace also implies that you should probably be the only one that edits it in a significant way. Commons does not nearly have the help of, say en.wp, and has and must rely on bots to do a lot of maintenance work they can easily recognize user templates if they are in the correct namespace and make exceptions for tools. We have to maintain a list of acceptable licenses to do much of this work and to have tools such as gallery (which would show the image as missing a license otherwise).
Ok, besides all that, while it's true it's a template, it's not useful to anyone else. If everyone had personal template in the template namespace it would be unmanageable. It would impossible to find anything, there would be naming conflicts, and it would practically ruin the usefulness of having a separate namespace for templates. This is one reason why we have the Creator: namespace. Those are all templates but don't start with "Template:". Being outside the user namespace implies collaboration, but that isn't really there for personal templates. The author should have almost complete control (within policy).
Now, personally, I understand the inconvenience of writing the extra five characters, "User:", so how about this: you create a template redirect to the one in the user space and use that? Rocket000 (talk) 14:47, 18 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok that sounds like a perfectly workable compromise but isn't a redirect defeating the purpose of not having those template? But if that will allow me to continue uploading using Fir0002 150 etc etc then so be it! --Fir0002 www 05:20, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
A little bit. But I see it as a reasonable compromise. :) Redirects are better though, because if someone goes to that page they'll end up in the user space. They are also easier to manage and more bot-friendly (picking up template->user redirects is easy). I think both sides can live with this solution. So feel free to make any you need. Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 05:45, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome! Thanks for your help in this matter. All the best, --Fir0002 www 07:45, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Admin questions 2.0[edit]

Well I wanted a bot account, with that I mean having a bot flag. I'll try asking Siebrand about it. Take a look at the AN board. --Kanonkas(talk) 08:20, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just discussed this with Rastrojo. I'm just saying we need to be careful on this case, currently trying to find more information about the issue. --Kanonkas(talk) 09:10, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Of course. So what type of bot are you thinking of? A custom program or one that uses AWB or pywikipedia or something else? Rocket000 (talk) 09:26, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well I really thought about an automatic bot account, instead of a human bot. I thought maybe about pywiki but again as I said I'm not so good on programming and all this here with bots. When is that nomination going to happend? You sure got knowledge about these stuff, and I do believe you'll just do fine. --Kanonkas(talk) 09:39, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Heh, maybe the next time it's obvious we need another one. And that's still a maybe since I've plenty to do without taking on another role. :) Anyway, when most people say "bot" it's implied that it's automatic. Otherwise, you don't need a flag. Both AWB and pywikipedia scripts can be fully automatic. No programming knowledge is needed (although you should be somewhat familiar with using a command line interface rather than a GUI if you're going to use the pywikipedia framework). I'm just learning python myself (which isn't going as fast as I would like) so I wouldn't be able to help you with anything there. I'm fairly decent with regexes (I got a bunch of useful ones for AWB) if you need help that. Rocket000 (talk) 09:55, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure you can help me with AWB instead. --Kanonkas(talk) 11:29, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What should I call the bot? BotKan, KanonBot, KanonkasBot, etc. Also, you know recently a lot of Luke Ford images got removed? --Kanonkas(talk) 17:35, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
:) Umm... I kinda like KanonBot. Rocket000 (talk) 17:41, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try creating it then, but as an admin how do I create the account? I believe we have no limit, on how many accounts we can create if we do it on some special page. --Kanonkas(talk) 18:09, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, do it the same way you normally would: //commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:UserLogin&type=signup, just don't log out. Rocket000 (talk) 18:14, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem it's not really that hard, I don't know it either but by looking at the script I'm changing for example the templates which should be there instead. For example from en.wiki it's a template like: uw-vandalism1 instead I change it with test1. If you understand what I mean, if not leave a message. Best regards, --Kanonkas(talk) 18:01, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I got you. Maybe you van use the templates from MediaWiki:Gadget-UserMessages.js? Rocket000 (talk) 18:10, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I thought about that, I just need to get them in right orders (warning lvl) also the second issue is when I'm posting a note take this here as an example: "Caution: Editing tests on Image:DC.jpeg. using TW" Which isn't really what I wanted. It should have said something like "Caution: Image:Example.jpg just got deleted as a copyright violation" if you could help me with fixing the interface that would be nice of you! Oh and you're the best :) Yep that's true! --Kanonkas(talk) 17:27, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll work on it. Rocket000 (talk) 17:52, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Well about twinkle it's pretty much re-making it for commons use that means we will have to make scripts for twinkle, maybe a twinkle which can delete one image at a time? I'm just saying it's a lot of stuff it can do here, it's just the scripting that takes time. Also about this here, well I've got no suggestion for a steward icon I can try and find one but I doubt it. Well for the skilled people I agreed with you, the icons well I can try to find some but I believe you're the best one at the job! (Well regarding your first question, well it's to late so here you get the first reply too :)) I'll look for icons for the skilled people, just so you know!--Kanonkas(talk) 19:09, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh ok, I was wondering if you're experienced with open proxies? I'm currently trying to find out how to find open proxies. Mike.lifeguard told me about "nmap" it's some kind of a "hacker" tool I believe. Anyway if you could help me with nmap, or you've got you're own knowledge about open proxies be sure to tell me! --Kanonkas(talk) 20:35, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I seem to be missing something... it's not working. As for open proxies, I used them before and know about things like Tor but not really anything about hunting them down. I would think watching the en.wp block log would be the easiest way to find 'em. :) Rocket000 (talk) 21:07, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah checking en.wiki is the easiest, but I want to find them on my own heh. I see you just twinkled my talk page! So are you still having the issue with importing the script? I see you copied almost everything from my monobook.js. --Kanonkas(talk) 22:32, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, it's working now. When I commented out an unrelated part I didn't realize there was a /* */ comment the middle that ended it. Oh, and I made User:Sandbox for testing. :) Rocket000 (talk) 22:58, 10 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Time to block that sandbox sockpuppet! Anything you need help with the scripts? I'll check up on Maxim, I believe he is good with scripting. --Kanonkas(talk) 07:10, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh and by the way I've found the extension that herby wanted you know the "patrol" rights? Well this extension is already available. --Kanonkas(talk) 12:40, 11 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I gave up for now. It's a pretty complicated script (or scripts, I should say). The template thing was working alright but I prefer simple links in the side bar (that UserMessages.js provides). I have the auto save so I can customize them. Picking the language is also nice. OTOH, I'm not a big templater, so I wouldn't know. Rocket000 (talk) 07:24, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It sure is, no problem. I'll try to work out with the scripts. --Kanonkas(talk) 09:30, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also your image is up as a featured picture candidate. --Kanonkas(talk) 09:54, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe you saw my message heh you were posting your own message to me down at your talk. Now take a look at the above note ;) Can you help me find free images at the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service website? --Kanonkas(talk) 10:04, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, I saw it. I was commenting on the FAC. Actually, I found that image randomly on en.wp., but I'm on the FWS site right now. I'll let you know if I find any good areas of the site to go to. Rocket000 (talk) 10:15, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I forgot, I already bookmarked http://images.fws.gov/default.cfm?fuseaction=records.browseKeywords. It's probably the best place to start. Rocket000 (talk) 10:20, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your rv. I just looked at my user page and Saw "User:Kanonkas" under the admin box, I didn't understand if it was my browser then thought of the template. It turned out I was right :P Good luck with the template. --Kanonkas(talk) 14:03, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Silly mistake. Rocket000 (talk) 14:04, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sure you can just redirect/delete the template you posted on my talk. --Kanonkas(talk) 15:29, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was just looking at Template:Pp-template and saw you've deleted it many times, I was thinking if we could create that template with the code from en.wiki so we can create protection notes, I know we aren't en.wiki but I'm just saying we should change our protections notes. I came over the template when I was fixing a twinkle script I was making for Commons. --Kanonkas(talk) 12:08, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the thing is I made {{Protected template}} small by default. We have {{Protected image}} and the general {{Protected}}, so I don't really see the need for yet another protection template. Actually, we just stop giving protection notices of templates now that nearly all our templates are protected (everything linked more than 1000 times). There's a lot of images out there missing the notice and I seem to be the only one applying it when I come across them... it seems like the only times Commons really does the notice is when it's a gallery/category because of edit-warring—if that. And with those, {{protected}} is perfect since it allows a reason to be given. Feel free to make that fit your needs, but, like I said, another pp template isn't needed. Let me know if you'd like for me to make up a new version. Rocket000 (talk) 12:50, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Silly me, thanks for the info. I'll leave a note when a possible new version is going to be made. Also check out: Bugzilla. --Kanonkas(talk) 13:03, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Voted. I'm surprised no one made that bug report earlier. Rocket000 (talk) 19:01, 25 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Should we make a possible proposal about edit warring and username policy here on commons? I'm just saying I see all kind of usernames (I understand commons is multilanguage) but take a look at this. That was horrible to see, and the edit warring is just disruptive. You remember the conflict between Le Behnam, and Executioner, well that was a long dispute. Just saying that it seems like we're getting more problems with such cases and possible policy against such can make the edit warring stop at least at the time it happend. --Kanonkas(talk) 12:15, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we already kinda do have a policy on those things—just not written out. I mean, offensive names like that do get blocked and people who continue to edit-war do get blocked. To me these are more common sense things where writing them out seems like instruction creep, but if you think it would help to have a written policy, go for it. Rocket000 (talk) 21:04, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Will do, but for now I can't because I am sick, been feeling horrible. Also User:WeHaWoe has been blocked for 3 days, thought you wanted to know. --Kanonkas(talk) 21:27, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for letting me know. Hope you feel better soon! Rocket000 (talk) 21:30, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

be-tarask to be-x-old[edit]

Regarding your moves from be-tarask to be-x-old. Is there any other reason except the local wp title to move these pages to their new locations? As for now be-tarask stands for the language and be-x-old stands only for the Wikipedia and interwiki titles. Be-tarask is used as a language in user preferences and it is being translated in MediaWiki now (the translation of be-x-old was freezed about a year ago, as I know). So if there is a list of available languages in the header be-tarask is more favourable then be-x-old. Maybe it would make sense to create a redirect from be-x-old to be-tarask to match the interwiki prefix? --zedlik (talk) 20:45, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The reason for doing this was because there's be-x-old:, and all the interwiki sorting lists I found (m:Interwiki sorting order, m:List of Wikipedias/local names, m:Template:N en/list, pl:Pomoc:Interwiki) all listed it as be-x-old. Since {{#language:be-tarask}} and {{#language:be-x-old}} both give the same result (visually), I figured it's best to be consistent with the other projects. Mainly for the machine readability and to avoid confusion. For someone not familiar with the language, I always thought they were two different languages. What would be the main benefit of having it be-tarask? I guess I can change them back. Rocket000 (talk) 21:03, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, this is confusing. Well, let me descibe briefly the facts as they are. In March 2007 Belarusian Wikipedia was split into 2 parts: with the prefixes be and be-x-old. There are two most used spellings of the Belarusian language exist and by splitting it was intended that one wp will use one of them and another wp will use the second. A couple of months later a separate subtag be-tarask was registered by IANA for the spelling which was intended to use in the be-x-old wp. After this a new interface language in all the wikimedia projects was created (it calls as be-tarask for example in user preferences) and about a year ago a requsest for renaming be-x-old wikipedia to be-tarask was submitted. This request in not closed till now, because not all the preliminary problems are solved.
So, this Wikipedia could be renamed, could be not, I don't know. The participants of it want it to be renamed according to the language tag name, but this depends on many other questions. But nevertheless, for now the situation is if we want to mean the language, be-tarask is more preferable, if interwiki or wikipedia title, then be-x-old should be used. I agree that this is confusing, but this is the situation for now.
I will be very glad if you could take your changes back. I think it will be possible to create redirects then from be-x-old to be-tarask, so it will be clearer that they mean the same thing.
zedlik (talk) 21:49, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done And I left the be-x-old → be-tarask redirects in place. Cheers, Rocket000 (talk) 22:25, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thank you very much! --zedlik (talk) 22:50, 25 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Will wiki and wiki users ever be mature enough (not an age thing, actually) for be-your-self -- carol (talk) 09:39, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Does that have anything to do with this discussion? --Kanonkas(talk) 09:48, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hehe, I believe that was a joke. Carol is funny like that. :) Rocket000 (talk) 09:55, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
be is the language code for Belgium, I understand this. But this "better ask" has an English meaning which kind makes it look not so Belgium. It is a joke because it is funny, be-tarask is funny, be-x-old is kind of funny (actually, not really). What I asked is the same kind of funny and it is half not funny because it is an honest question in English and one that makes me very sad to actually consider the situation in which I would ask it. Maturity is not dependent on age; it is more dependent on experience and self-control. -- carol (talk) 10:11, 13 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know you deleted this as deprecated....but bot scripts see that it's not here and don't use it, see Image:Arsinea.jpg and I don't think the parameters are compatible with the newer template. Any ideas? -Nard 10:53, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the bot needs updating. Redirecting won't work because the parameters need to change. I'll come up with a temporary solution. Rocket000 (talk) 11:12, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done... for now. Rocket000 (talk) 11:24, 27 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Had to have been used[edit]

re: http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:R_from_other_template&action=edit&redlink=1 or deletion log of same.

  • Seem to be missing a talk notice on this about proposed deletion. I don't get over here often, but generally manage a few times a week looking for images or managing categories... Admit I turned off email notifications of modifications... just got to be too much.
  • Didn't this also categorize templates to a 'redirects' tracking category?
    • Hmmmm, Template redirects is still there. What'd you do, run a bot and subst or some such?
  • Perhaps you don't do much maintenance work with templates, but such categories can be useful, and auto-categorizing is equally so. Aliased templates are generally accessed to change something, or at least look under the hood and see what parameters might be used. Those with /doc pages can be tacked into the redirect and provide duplicate help for the aliased template. In short, perhaps you might have asked first. If for nothing else to compare between sister projects. See for example the parent category and it's parent.
  • What I can't figure out is how you have so much time as to bother with a harmless utility tool others apparently found useful... then (apparently) make a unilateral decision to trash the system. IIRC, it's been in place here for circa two years or more.
  • I can't guarantee that it was also tagged with {{Interwikitmp-grp}}, like the two links cited above, but it'd be a rare oversight if not, and if so, your deletion makes even less sense. Please do explain.

I'd appreciate it. // FrankB 00:39, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On Commons, we have a very different category system. This template was only used a few pages that you added it to. No one used it in two years. It doesn't do much good if it's not fully implemented. Also, I don't see the point of it on Commons—Categories should be soft redirected, we have no "print-worthy" redirects, we are multilingual, and most of links come from other projects. We do have something similar for templates at {{Template redirect}}, which I'm starting to work on (for tracking purposes, specially licensing). It may seem like a unilateral decision but it was also a unilateral decision to bring those templates here where there was no consensus for such a system, which you are well aware the whole template sharing project met much opposition on other projects as well.
Actually, most of my maintenance work is with templates. You're right, it was harmless, but this along with 100s of other unused unwanted templates make managing that namespace really difficult. Rocket000 (talk) 03:54, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User uploaded a lot of copyvios and falsely claimed them as his own. -Nard 03:57, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Crap, that is a lot. I haven't looked at all of them but I'm thinking about nuking them all since I doubt any are his. What do you think? Rocket000 (talk) 04:01, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Found another one, similar modus operandi User:Gina Manfredi ocampo. Anyway what's funny is I meant to post this at COM:AN but your talk page tab was open instead and I just hit "+comment" without even looking :P. Keel them! -Nard 04:07, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's ok, these are pretty straight forward cases I think I can handle myself. One down, one to go. Thank you very much for catching these two before they can do even more damage. The last may be a case of someone thinking they are the author for simply scanning something. In both cases, I'm not blocking yet, but each have their final warning. I'll try to keep an eye on them, but if miss any new uploads, please let me know. Thanks, N. (Also, I'm giving the second one, a little time to make a statement.)
