Wikilivre de photographie[edit]

Salut Rama,

Daniel•D 14:01, 1 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tu en as oublié.

-- Perky 11:29, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What copyvio?[edit]

Hello. You apparently deleted my photo Image:Ikata_Nuclear_Power_Plant_Protest_Sign.jpg for copyvio, without any warning at all. I don't recall what I had stated on the page, but I took that photo, I uploaded it, and I licensed it under a free license. Please restore it. -Amake 06:22, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The photograph was a trivial reproduction of the sign, hence a violation of the copyright of its makers. See the contrast with Guillaume Paumier's photographs like Image:Anti-EPR demonstration in Toulouse 0179 2007-03-17.jpg, Image:Anti-EPR demonstration in Toulouse 0166 2007-03-17.jpg or Image:MEI - Anti-EPR demonstration in Toulouse 0219 2007-03-17.jpg, in which signs take a significant place but are contextualised. This is why Paumier's photos are original works, while this particular photograph of yours was not. Sorry. Rama 06:44, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Can you please point me to material on copyright, preferably in the context of Wikimedia policy, explaining how a picture of a sign "in the wild" is a violation of copyright? Because frankly that sounds like complete bullshit to me. In order to take a picture of this sign, I'd have to catch someone in the act of waving it around? -Amake 11:52, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest that you tone it down and read Commons:Licensing, for a start. Rama 14:10, 2 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which information may be missing. Thank you. Siebrand 10:03, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting Logos of Car Companys[edit]

Can you please explain me why you are deleting my pictures of the logos of car companies like: File:Lamborghini Logo yellow.jpg,File:Cadillac Logo.jpg,File:TVR Logo.jpg, File:Bentley Logo.jpg or File:Healey Logo.jpg? Was there a problem with the name or with the quality? The Lamborghini Logo of course was very good. Michi1308 15:14, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Arg, I forgot to explain. My apologies.
Logos are not OK on Commons. The reason is a combination of original work of an artistic nature and of trademark issues.
Logos can be included on a photograph as an element among others (for instance if you're photographing a car you'll have the car brand logo on it; it you photograph a street chances are you'll see advertisements; ...), but they should not be the subject of the image. Hence a close-up is considered to be derivative work, and thus it is not possible to licence the image as you please.
Sorry that I failed to notify you; also I am sorry that some of your work got lost and that it's not possible to upload these images -- believe me I'd write laws differently were it only for me.
I hope this little snag won't damage your enthusiasm. Don't hesitate to ask me (or any other admin, or the Village pump) if you have questions, and good continuation ! Rama 16:08, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you.

This version was much better:

Antinuclear logos[edit]

Dear Rama,

I have made the logos myself, but they look like the traditional logos, of course. Is there anyway in which my logos can ba adapted to avoid the copyright? Would it be enough to change the proportions, lettertype, and number of rays of the Sun, for instance?

--Jgaray 14:05, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sadly, no. In all these cases, the works would be a "derived work" of the original work, and the copyright of the original author would remain, preventing you from licencing the work as you please. Rama 14:18, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wroclaw University Press - request - important![edit]

Dear Rama, Wroclaw University Press is going to publish a book by Anna Gemra entitled 'Od gotycyzmu do horroru. Wilkolak, wampir i Monstrum Frankensteina w wybranych utworach.'. In this book we would like to reproduce a picture of 'The Vampire' by Philip Burne-Jones. We need a high resolution image, that's why we would like to ask if you could send us a good quality copy of that image. We will be grateful for your help.

Kind regards,
Katarzyna Berbas

e-mail: licencje@wuwr.com.pl

Greetings, and thank you for your interest
Unfortunately, the image Image:Burne-Jones-le-Vampire.jpg was made by scanning a book, which loses much resolution. If you take a close examination of Image:Burne-Jones-le-Vampire.jpg at full size, you will see that printing artefacts appear (around the mouth of the vampire notably).
I could try to scan with a higher resolution and attempt digital post-processing, but this is not guaranteed to yield good results -- information which was lost in the printing cannot be re-invented later, sadly.
I will make at attempt in this vein and keep you informed, but if you want really good results, I am afraid that access to an original copy is a must.
Good luck ! Rama 10:40, 18 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images from Florence and Italy[edit]

Hi Rama! I'm an user from it.Wiki: maybe you know about the problems with Italian Soprintendenza in Florence (read here). I thought that images from Florence were not allowded only in it.wiki, but I was wrong :P I uploaded this image and after I asked the deletion, but it hasn't been deleted yet. Trixt told me that also images from other museums in Italy should be deleted: I uploaded this and this some time ago, in Commons there are others images of the same works of art, I don't know if it's right or not. I am very confused about this situation: can you help me to understand? Thank you very much :) --AnnaLety 10:00, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are also this, this, this. --AnnaLety 10:08, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently, an Italian law was passed in 2004, which forbids "being in competition with National museums". In practice, the law attempts to forbid publishing images of artwork of these museums to enforce a monopoly of these museums on all reproductions.
I believe that the matter should be examined by the legal experts of the Wikimedia Foundation. I am not a lawyer myself, but I believe that this law has a number of problems:
  • it was evoked to attempt forbidding publishing of images made before 2004. This could be seen as a violation of the non-retroactivity of law
  • I think that this law is a blatant violation of Berne conventions, of which Italy is a signatory country. International law has precedence on national law, so the 2004 law could be seen as illegal itself, or at least void and null.
  • Wikipedia in all languages, including Italian, and Wikimedia Commons, are hosted in the USA. Italian law does not apply in the USA.
Of course the matter is very complicated and I stress that it should be examined by competent people. In the immediate time, I think that Wikimedia is bound to remove material which is clearly illegal. This is obviously not a clear case. Hence, my recommendation would be not to remove this material of the time being.
The matter is a very interesting case of how people see the role of museums and the interaction with the general population, I'm looking forwards to seeing how things unfold. Cheers ! Rama 10:38, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In th precise case of [4], the images were deleted because the original uploader requested it. I wouldn't understand this as meaning that Wikimedia Commons itself has taken a decision of the matter. Cheers ! Rama 10:43, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much! :) -AnnaLety 10:47, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Note that it's more complicated than this:
  • non-retroactivity is not an universal principle
  • International law does not have precedence on national law in Italy
  • Wikipedia projects attempt to respect national laws
In this case, the law makes it effectively impossible to enjoy Public Domain, which is why I think that it is so egregious that it is probably weak. Professional advice must be obtained on the matter. Rama 14:14, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I know that the problem is complicated, in it.wiki some users are trying to understand what we can do or not. --AnnaLety 15:12, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I think that it would be wise to contact our legal advisors, User:BradPatrick and User:MikeGodwin, preferably by e-mail. Cheers and good luck ! Rama 15:15, 20 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Tanka-o-kiru drawing.jpg[edit]

Hi, Rama. I think the file name of Image:Tanka-o-kiru drawing.jpg is inappropriate.

As far as I know, "tanka" (啖呵) in Japanese is nothing to do with a sword. "Tanka" means "bluff words". "Tanka-wo-kiru" (啖呵を切る) means "to bluster out", "to say something defiantly" or "to swear right to someone's face".

In this case the file name should be "Koiguchi-wo-kiru"(鯉口を切る) or like that. "Koiguchi" (鯉口) means "the mouth of a sword case". Please consider the file name change. Thank you. --miya 01:56, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much, I think that I might have at last understood the nuance.
I have moved the image to Image:Koiguchi-wo-kiru_drawing.jpg, and also another to Image:Koiguchi-wo-kiru-p1010071.jpg.

Use PNG instead of JPEG?[edit]

Hey Rama, I noticed you recently uploaded a couple of JPEG images like Image:Zea at museum-1.jpg that should probably rather be stored in PNG format (since they are drawings). I'm not asking you to replace the existing images (it's probably not worth the effort), but how about using PNG for drawings in the future? -- Ddxc 03:32, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Please delete it, it's really gross and disgusting.

This is no criteria to remove an image from Commons. Rama 01:10, 8 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Photography guides[edit]

Hi, I realise User:Rama/Choosing_equipment is a work in progress, but I have corrected a couple of typos, hope you don't mind :-). I wasn't sure what 'fidelise' means though. I was looking at your pages after someone on the new Commons talk:Photography Guide Project Alpha page pointed out all the work you had already done. It appears you have single handedly completed a lot of the areas envisaged in this project page. I hope you will get involved with the guide :-) --Tony Wills 05:25, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Ah yes. I need to be more serious about these little projects I start (like labeling my photos from the Louvre, which I had started and have not finished yet :p).
User:Rama/Choosing_equipment has become a synonyme for "combinatory explosion" in my mind. There are so many possible criteria for purchasing a camera...
I am happy that a project like this guide was started. I think that there is a big need for a "meta-education" on Wikipedia, in the sense of teaching people how to contribute well. This project very good in this respect, and it might also increase the number of images that we get. I'm all for it.
"fidelise" would mean something like "make people faithful"; for instance a shop would "fidelise" its clients by offering reduces prices after a number of purchases. I'd be interested to learn the proper word.
Cheers ! Rama 10:31, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
PS: of course I more than don't mind corrections, I appreciate greatly! Rama 14:25, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please label your photos[edit]

Hello, you photos are good, but need to be properly labelelled. Photos of things in museums etc. without accurate labels do not relate to Wikipedia, which has the purpose of giving information. regards. Rod.Rcbutcher 06:41, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think he already knows that, see [5] (hint: check out the author) :-) --Tony Wills 07:49, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are two sorts of problems with this:
  • photographs that I took very naively at the beginning of my contributions, when I was unaware of what needed to be done. These usually don't qualify as "good" :p
  • photographs that I took after I started taking photographs systematically. The labeling is available, but these images come by the hundred, and I sometimes lack the perseverance to go through them all. Kicking me in the butt is probably the thing to do. Rama 10:45, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Usual spelling is "defamation". AnonMoos 14:03, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

thank you, I'll correct it. Cheers! Rama 14:19, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Coup de torchon[edit]

Bonjour,

Rama 13:06, 22 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Rama, I ask for that picture, because it was deleted because of copyvio. I'm shure, that I wrote the OTRS-permission in the picture-description (Ticket #2007102010006639). Could you look, if it's right and maybe it was forgotten in the deletion request. Thanks and greetings -- Ra'ike T C 09:06, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,
The OTRS ticket is on the
the permission seems to be OK, but the website of the owner of the image seems to be down. Without it, it is not possible to confirm that the permission refers to this image. I'll try again and restore the image as soon as I can confirm the match.
Cheers ! Rama 13:12, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Rama, sorry for my disturbance, it's cleared up now. The uploader told me, that the contacted Webmaster didn't have the right, to give the permission (look there). Greetings -- Ra'ike T C 21:39, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Darn, too bad. All the more incitative to make the photograph ourselves, though. Cheers! Rama 08:10, 29 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
