Hi - please do not upload material under fair use, this is not accepted on the commons. Have a look at Commons:licensing for details. Thanks -- Duesentrieb 01:51, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello - thank you for providing images to the wikimedia commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the commons should be useful to all users of wikimedia projects - this is possible only if the images can be found by other people. To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should either place the images on topic pages (galleries), or put the images directly into a category, or do both. Which of those possibilities is preferred is however a matter of debate, see here.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There is a large number of completely unsorted images on the commons right now, see Commons:Really unused. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do! Thank you. -- Duesentrieb 01:59, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again - I meant Image:Pilsudzki timecover june07 1926.jpg - it's not old enough to be free (in the US, things are PD if published before 1923 or the author is dead 95 years).

As to the categories - ther's Commons:Categories, but that list is quite outdated. Just have a look at the main page, some good entry points to the category structure are given there. Just surf down the structure until you find something that matches your images. Thanks four your cooperation! -- Duesentrieb 10:44, 9 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

hey there - ther's no "easy" way to move images between wikis, you'll have to re-upload it on the project you want to have it. Please put it up for speedy deletion here when you are done. As to Image:WWII Poland Invasion 1939-09-01.jpg: I don't think it can be considered PD before 2009, and it may even be protected after that. I also asked our (c)-expert on the de:wp, he sais he sees no reason this image should be PD, sorry. -- Duesentrieb 22:15, 10 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Piotrus. You can indeed see a good example for jpg-artefacts on w:JPG#Photographs. In the mentioned pic you can see it clearly in the region of the collar and the hands. Yes, it is possible to fix it, but only if you have the original pic at your disposal. Otherwise the needed image information is gone in course of the compression. So if you have the original version, save it with less compression and upload it again. Perhaps try to contact the original uploader. Regards, norro 19:19, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Piotrus, what's up with this template you're using? It says: "Permission is granted (...) provided they are first uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons site from their site, and that the authors are notified what photo(s) are used and in what article(s)." Well, Commons:Licensing says there can't be any conditions that require notification of the creator for any purpose. If you just wanted to say "We'd appreciate it if you told us about where you use the image", please change it that way. We're discussing this at Commons talk:Licensing#Unusual template, if you want to join in. --Fb78 01:44, 14 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hej, ja tez o tym szablonie... Wydaje mi sie, ze wrzucanie tych zdjec bezposrednio do kategorii Poland nie jest najlepszym pomyslem, bo przeladowuje ja i utrudnia korzystanie. Juz teraz rozepchnelo ja do trzech kolejnych podstron. Meteor2017 16:20, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

your message[edit]

hello there,

yes I am getting the impression that there are many "Polish" images which were simply uploaded without source or anything. While I think it is good to have many images, the policy needs to be strictly adhered to. I find it unfortunate that so many images are not up to code. While I can help a little to find sources and add them on ad-hoc, this is not something that I can do by myself and it is the primary responsibility of the user who uploads them. Maybe you could be so kind to inform fellow Polish users about always having a source and an author for every image they upload, so that we can save ourselves a lot of work later. Hopefully we can find a way to work this through. Gryffindor 17:47, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've restored the "unsourced" tag to this image because it refers to the sculpture in the photograph, not the photograph itself. Yes, photographs of copyrighted sculptures are derivative works, so if the sculpture is copyrighted, its use in the photograph can only be justified by fair use, in addition to the photographer's rights in the photograph. Derivative works always have more than one level of copyright in this fashion. I've responded to your question on my Wikipedia talk page, and it would be most helpful to continue this discussion there. Thanks, Postdlf 16:31, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Commons:Derivative works is even more clear than anything I've found on Wikipedia regarding this issue. Postdlf 16:40, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just did a quick scan through Category:Dinosaur models, and none of them appear to source the sculptures they depict. I think at least one of those (the Crystal Palace model) is old enough to be in the public domain, but the remainder are a problem. Postdlf 16:45, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Katowice[edit]

Witam! Możesz zresztą przejrzeć mój upload i katowickie kategorie aby to sprawdzić. Dziękuję i pozdrawiam! --Lestat 20:44, 25 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Kategorie[edit]

I will not undelete or upload to en.wiki under fair use. But, since you have the source, you can provide the source, license and everything else you need at en.wiki, or here if they are under a free license, and reupload the images. Then, you will get notified for any problems as then you will be the uploader. Thank you and have a good day. MECUtalk 23:22, 18 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As it belongs to my favorite genus this plant was easy identified. It's not a cactus but a Euphorbia trigona. Greetings, Ies 16:55, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

(snip) Dear Pjotr, as you seem a newby I better explain some circumstances in Commons:Categories for a better understanding. Please read the entire Commons:Categories to learn that there is NO bondage to categorize images: They CAN (not should!) be categorized or optionally can be placed in galleries. As the latter usually looks better, allows captations and a further sorting of the images it's preferred by most advanced users. You're right that there are two concurrently systems. You're not right that category links should be preferred. Please take the time to look around in other plant categories. On the one hand there are some that are looked after by experts and due to the use of only one of the systems (galleries!) look clean, proper and user-friendly (or almost so, sometimes some unidentified or doubtful plants remain). Examples are Category:Aizoaceae , Category:Cephalotaxaceae, Category:Cistaceae, Category:Euphorbiaceae, Category:Passifloraceae). On the other hand there are some neglected categories and some in which users couldn't find an agreement that look chaotic. One chaotic example is Category:Agavaceae in which for instance Image:Agave deserti flower.jpg appears in the main category and in article Agave deserti and in subcategory Category:Agave and in its article Agave and in article Agave deserti. Such unnecessary confusing things appear if users act like you in case of your images Image:Tall cacti Tenerife.JPG and Image:Tall thin growing cacti 2.JPG. You might have overlooked the chapter Commons:Categories#Category structure in which these not wanted „red-line-links“ are explained. Think about what happened with your Euphorbia photos in chronological order:

  • I deleted the wrong Category:Unidentified cacti. No breach of the rules.
  • I placed the images in the correct gallery. No breach of the rules.
  • You set a link to Category:Euphorbia. That’s a breach of the rules. You not only ignored the preset tree structure and placed the images wrong in the main category, you also produced a „red-line-link“. So if there is any of us vandalizing (I wouldn’t have used that word) or damaging the system, it's not me but you.

My advice is to adapt your images to the system you find preset in the certain category you want to place your images in. As Wikimedia is like a living tree that grows day for day but now and then needs a correcting cut to reduce rank growth, there is no reason to get excited when one who looks after the category makes a cut and corrects or replaces given categories or changes from category links to galleries - or even revers if beneficial.

As you repeatedly categorized already identified plants as unidentifed you seem to require a second advice. First of all please notice that if such particular category link gets deleted there might be a good reason. Imagine what reason this might be before you fix the same – wrong - link again and again. If you don't know how to recognize the gallery in which an image is used go to its description (main) page and study the there listed links.

My third advice is about reasonable categories. An image of Euphorbia trigona placed in category:Tenerife doesn't make more sense than an image of a wet tomato in category:oceans. Without doubt both are there, Euphorbia trigona on Tenerife and a tomato in one of the oceans, but both don't belong to that place and are aliens there. So please take the time to opt for better suiting and more reasonable categories. If you took the photos in a botanical garden I suggest to look around at Category:Botanical gardens in Spain. If the the one you visited isn't there already, create a category for it (let me know if you need any assistance).

The forth and last advice is not to expect description changes from other users of images you took. Other users only can assist by identifying the object (plant) and moving the image to an assumedly correct gallery or category. They never know any closer conditions under which a photo was taken (exact place, date and time or whatever might be interesting in the certain case). So in the end you are responsible for the image and its description, nobody else. Greetings, Ies 16:15, 26 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Les, the bottom line is that Commons like Wikipedia is constantly growing in detail. Category Tenerife may not be very useful, but at some points we will have category plants of tenerife and regions and so on, and it will help to identify which plants grow where. Every gallery should have a corresponding category; if it doesn't, a higher level category should be used. Removing a higher-level category because it 'clutters' a gallery is not constructive; you should simply create subcategories and populate them. I find category system, with sub and over cats, much better than galleries. If you don't want to add categories, you don't have to, but undoing works of others is indeed very unconstructive. PS. Plese explain on talk of the image you are removing a cat from why are you doing this, maybe we can reach a compromise there.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 17:13, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Piotr, didn't you understand anything I patiently tried to explain? Didn't you notice that Every gallery should have a corresponding category; if it doesn't, a higher level category should be used. isn't true according to Commons:Categories? Didn't you visit other plant categories as suggested? Didn't you notice that most of them, particularly the tidy ones, are arranged like Category:Euphorbia? Didn't you see that you once again caterorized already identified Euphorbs as unidentified?. Don't you understand that more than 1000 images in one category cause a mess only that I try to avert in the beginning? Or is your intention simply to rebel against order, to swim against the stream and to get on my nerves? As long as you keep on annoying by combating order I can't see any compromise. Please remove the category links from your images before I complain about you. Ies 21:08, 3 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Piotr,
I have added my very own opinion to this sad case. Please have a look at it. We have to do something to stop outraging things like that in order to restore peace on Commons. It is not acceptable that this aggressive and ignorant Rtc destroys everything here. Please let me know what you think. Thanks and Best Wishes.

IMHO właśnie takie myślenie szkodzi projektowi. 1. (sam się nabrałem i zrobiłem derivative work z takiego plakatu) 2.
--Robek (talk|contribs) 22:52, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is still hope this might make QI, I have added a summary box to the image. But you haven't actually specified the author, and perhaps a link to them if anyone wants to verify the licensing --Tony Wills 11:24, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am no expert on licensing, but you do need to show evidence of permision if it is not your own image. You do not need to reveal the author of the image on the image page if for some reason he does not want it disclosed there, but you need to file permission from him with the OTRS system (eg forward them an email from him that gives the permission). --Tony Wills 23:02, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair to all those who use the image, they really do need some assurance that the image is freely usable, I expect that someone (not me ;-) will nominate it for deletion if it is left without author information. An email is good because all the headers can be used to verify the source. I suppose just a link to their wikimedia page might be sufficient. But its up to you to show some evidence :-) --Tony Wills 01:58, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I am sure the OTRS system will accept a letter written on paper or on stone tablet if necessary :-). --Tony Wills 04:50, 24 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Removing a wire with the GIMP[edit]

Hi Piotrus!

You should be able to find what you're looking for by searching the web for "photoshop remove wire tutorial" or something similar. In this case, I believe that the user interfaces for Photoshop and the GIMP are nearly identical—all you need is the clone tool—so you should be able to follow a tutorial with very few changes. Hope this helps! --bdesham  04:03, 18 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

moved from User talk:Bdesham:
Use Decompose and find the color layer that makes the sky and the other stuff the most black and white. Xtns/Plug-in Browser should be able to find where decompose is. Use levels tool to make the colors even more black and white and then use that as a layer mask -- that is how I got rid of the majority of the wires in the sky of the image that I started to work on. I still had to paint some on the mask. Blurring it helps also. I don't know yet if any other app has matched GIMP's gradient editor -- I do know that gimp developers peeked at the code to do that and only in the last couple of years dared to touch it. This makes it not beyond my imagination to think that other applications haven't been able to duplicate it. It is awesome though. Pick colors from the sky to get them into the toolbox, then use the editor to make a gradient. I have seen GIMP gradients in use in popular animations -- they are goregeous and the homemade ones are very flexible and beautiful to work with. -- carol 04:48, 28 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Piotr,

Oh yes, it is the P-L Comm. coat of arms in times of Saxon dynasty rule. The inescutcheon shows the Wettin coat of arms (left side properly - today modern Saxony CoA) and the right side shows the black crossed swords on red-white field which was the symbol of the Electors of the HRE.

The eagle is funny, it has an S wich was used in times of Zygmunt Stary and Stefen Bathory, without this S would be proper in 1739...

Yellow flower in Dominican Republic.JPG

Dear uploader,
Thanks very much for having uploaded this picture.
Unhappily the name you have given to the file : Image:Yellow flower in Dominican Republic.JPG is unvalid according to Commons rules because identification is missing. So this name must be removed.
Suggestion is to change it into Image:Allamanda cathartica in Dominican Republic.JPG, which includes identification of the species in the picture.
If you have better suggestions, you may address them on my talk page in the course of 2 days from now.
If no response, the above suggestion will be confirmed.
Greetings.

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Niechorze_-_mapa_01.JPG, is missing information about where it comes from or who created it, which is needed to verify its copyright status. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted.

If you created the content yourself, enter {{Own}} as the source. If you did not add a licensing template, you must add one. You may use, for example, {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} or {{Cc-zero}} to release certain rights to your work.

If someone else created the content, or if it is based on someone else's work, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

There should be no copyright problem according to Polish FOP, but there should be an author info for the map. I guess you could credit the locality, and simply describe the situation of the map in the source field? It is outside or in a public place, right? And thanks for the batch of good pictures! --Eusebius (talk) 22:10, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Dinosaurs_at_CMNH_42.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Oppeln Ratibor pawn[edit]

Lien to pojęcie ogólne według słownika polsko-angielskiego to prawo zastawne. Mathiasrex (talk) 17:48, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Spowodowałeś zmianę nazwy tego pliku używając szablonu rename. Czy poprawna wersja została załadowana automatycznie, czy zrobił to człowiek? Pozdr. --Starscream (talk) 19:23, 10 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dziękuję. Trzy miesiące temu wstawiłem ten szablon do file:HPIM5747.JPG. W Twoim przypadku trwało to kilka dni. Czy ten szablon może być groźny? To znaczy, dodany do prawidłowo nazwanego pliku, mógłby zmienić nazwę na przypadkowy lub obraźliwy ciąg znaków? --Starscream (talk) 15:08, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are you kidding? Portrait is a work of art representing a definite person, it could be painting, sculpture, literature, movie making, embroidery... On it.wiki we have categories such as like painting prortraits, sculpure portraits and so on, if you wish you can split that category too. --Sailko (talk) 23:42, 12 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Valued Image Promotion[edit]

Your nomination has been reviewed and promoted
Congratulations! The image you nominated was reviewed and has now been promoted as a valued image. It is considered to be the most valued image on Commons within the scope:
Cathedral of Learning.
If you would like to nominate another image, please do so at Valued images candidates.

I'm afraid I have lost the source file, so translating the map itself is a little difficult. In fact the map was not finished, I had uploaded it to show its progress to someone and get comments, but I never finished it. I always thought to start it again but I'm a little lazy. I added a description. Geraki TLG 00:01, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it’s good to have both maps around for different articles with different requirements. Btw, I do like the original legend also, however, some items listed there are not a part of the Polish map anymore. Thanks for fixing everything so nicely. --Poeticbent talk 19:43, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fotki "Star Wars"[edit]

Mike'a Godwina).

Pozdrawiam Electron <Talk?> 08:48, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, nice job. Will you make one for every voivodeship? There is a lot missing: Category:Maps of voivodeships of Poland 1921-1939. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 02:23, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks for the feedback Piotr, much appreciated. I'm not sure if I would be up to making more of these maps, because of how time and labor intensive they are. With Volhynia it was different though, because my mother was born in Kowel (look it up on my little map if you want). My mother's family escaped the Ukrainian massacres only because all of them (including 4 little girls) were sent to Siberia for six years and went through a different kind of horror in Kazakhstan by the Irtysh river. They lost everything back east and came to new Poland in 1946. A story of one more Polish family I guess. --Poeticbent talk 03:53, 13 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Ejz_bloki.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.
