speedy deletion的做法[edit]

碧琴,谢谢你的提醒。Commons这里删除图片好像比较慢呢。-- Tonync 13:36, 21 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

:) -- Tonync 02:07, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
你说得对,的确很奇怪。頭版是粤语维基人自己建立的,因为在commons加语言不需要通过审查,他们就自己做了。最近粤语版维基百科也开张了。姑且看看怎么样。-- Tonync 03:46, 26 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Abuse by User:Frombenny?[edit]

Hi Elise.

I'd like to point out that [User:Frombenny] has posted again the image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:France_with_Corsica_%28demis%29.png - which had been deleted following the appropriate process - and commented the "new" image he's posted as follows:

"Map of France with Corsica. This version is with an indication that Corsica is not located at its real location but in this map because it's part of the country. Hope it won't be deleted again. The point is not to have an accurate position of the Corsica.)"

Well, the point, in a geographical (not an "ideographic") map such as this, is to exactly have an accurate position of Corsica. Much more when the maps in question are intended to be LOCATOR maps!!!

Besides, the reposting is, IMHO, rather abusive, since it has been done without addressing what I had explained when candidating the image for deletion: (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Deletion_requests#Image:France_with_Corsica_.28demis.29.png) adding a visible line indicating the dispacement is mandatory as well as sufficient in such cases. I proposed, in this case, to simply remove the map because who has fabricated it cared even to invent the batimetry around Corsica and Provence shore in order to falsify the map and increase the impression that the Island actually lies where it doesn't. Thus, the cutting line would be not enough, because the false batimetry would be not fixed by the added line..

IMHO, [User:Frombenny] should have raised his opposition to the deletion offering valid points to counter my observations in the appropriate place, instead of ignoring the discussion opened [1] and going ahead with his reposting of the image which still features a fabricated batimetry.

Furthermore, he has removed the tag that I had added to the other images candidated for deletion, falsely claiming to having modified the images:

  1. Image:Saumur dot.jpg
  2. Image:Les Sables dot.JPG
  3. Image:Fontenay-le-Comte dot.png
  4. Image:Cholet dot.JPG
  5. Image:Bordeaux dot2.png

By the way, why they havent' been removed yet?

Thank you in advance for your attention.

Just to avoid any misunderstandings:

  • I never meant to get you involved in anything beyond what you deemed fair and appropriate. Fact is that I have been contacted by you for the first time, in order to help me with my deletion request, for which I were and am grateful. This is why I have kept contacting you (and not someone else) in order to get further advice.
  • Much less I meant to drag you in a dispute: I believe that you can agree with me when I say that all I have actually done never did go beyond just asking for your advice. In fact, I have avoided confronting the user in subject, which should tell you enough about my very own reluctance in dragging even myself in a personal dispute: much less I want you involved in anything.

Again my thanks for your help and best of all. --Piero Montesacro 13:04, 23 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

mediawiki's caching commons content[edit]

Thanks for the headsup on this proposal m:InstantCommons. I think it is great, and I added my comments at the end of the discussion page. Someday when I have more skill in the bowels of php coding I may be able to help implement features like this in the mediawiki. Cheers Mak 23:45, 22 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I 've talked with him on pl.wiki.

His friend is copyright holder of this works (son of author), he agrees with license and publication.

Stanp says that they want to upload scans of unpublished poems of this author.

Any suggestion about what to tell him about this?

I'll add comment about copyrgiht holder of already uploaded files :)

UploadingScreenshots of Open Source Program[edit]

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Glowstick_.jpg

Firstly, I have re-uploaded the image in the above link in the link below. I did so in order to create a more descriptive name for the image. I just want to make sure I did that correctly.

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Milkdrop_Screenshot_Glowstick-Code.jpg

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Milkdrop_Spikeball.jpg

Secondly, Milkdrop is an open source program, released under the "BSD template license". Me and my wife created the presets the above two screenshots where created from, and we also took the screen shots.

I'm pretty sure this allows me to upload them several times over licence wise. But I don't understand the legal speak well enough to make sure I have licensed everything correctly.

Hopefully when I get enough screenshots uploaded, I can expand the milkdrop article stub in Wikipedia

If there is anything I am doing wrong, please tell me.

Thanks, Xanthine Complex

RE-Categories should be in English[edit]

  • Message original :

Hi Pseudomoi. I noticed you created Category:Francophonie. Unfortunately due to technical limitations, we don't currently have proper internationalisation for categories, and we have decided to keep categories in English until we can implement that. Articles can be in other languages, that's no problem. So what is this category about?

Also, all categories should have a parent category, i.e. add a category to this category itself!

cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:43, 27 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Réponse :

I have try to use the english form. But i dont know the best is. Francophonie could be called : francophony, the francophonie, or formally Organisation internationale de la Francophonie. For the categorization, i've used Category:French and Category:International organizations. Is that OK ? --Pseudomoi 09:10, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fish[edit]

I guess I'm not entirely clear on what you're asking that's not already covered by Commons:WikiProject Tree of Life. I think a filled-out fish section will have mostly species as gallery-type pages sitting in family categories, with some of the larger genera as cats also. We started with mostly order cats, but things have been gradually migrating down to families as coverage improves, since most fish families are more reasonably sized than orders. Stan Shebs 18:43, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, we probably have enough experience to choose recommended "groups" in each area. One of my underlying principles for commons in general is to mirror the wikipedias as closely as possible, which makes it easier to find appropriate pics (for many taxa we now have good illustrations, but nobody working on wikipedias knows they exist!). Copyright Question[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise, Thanks for your message below. I really thought Wikipedia was educational! Anyway, I am in discussion with the artist who has given me full rights to use his drawings, but I now need to go back to him to get full commercial use rights. Assuming he agrees could you please suggest how I could amend the attribution to suit Wikipedia. Thanks. PS, A picture with the same attribution was uploaded without problem for "Ahuru". Perhaps this should be deleted too. Regards GrahamBould 08:26, 24 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello again Pfctdayelise, Dr Ayling has given permission, & I have the email exchange ready for adding to the Category. I would appreciate it if you could set the category up - I think "Drawings by Dr Tony Ayling" would be fine. Perhaps the previous wording I had could be used too, after amendment. Also, as these images are all drawings I think there is a separate category for this, could you advise please. Thanks for your help. GrahamBould 06:45, 28 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Pfctdayelise, Have added the permission. GrahamBould 15:54, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I should be able to take over from here. I actually wrote all the fish articles as well so should be able to place the pictures in the right Categories. Grateful for your patient help. GrahamBould 06:46, 30 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikinews[edit]

Thank you for your intreast in wikinews and commons cooperating. (sorry this is a little belated). previously WE use to upload exclusivly to commons when permitted by commons licensing, and delete any local images that wern't fair use. (and before that we didn't even have local upload enabled) Now that theres a lot of people mad at commons, its about half and half for new images. (eventhough the board doesn't allow us (to my knowladge) to have pd images over at wikinews theres now wikinews:Category:pd image). This is proably a problem, that I'm not sure how best to approach, and since you said on n:WN:WC that you were intreasted in commons, and sisterproject cooperation. I was courious of your opinion Bawolff 00:32, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DynNavBox[edit]

I'm a bit short on time right now, so I can't investigate the problem fully at the moment, (I'll try to get to it this weekend), but I can say that I've run into problems with js on Commons before because the addLoadEvent(); function didn't exist here. Gotta go, more later... --grmwnr (homewiki) 09:08, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Natural Taoist[edit]

Thank you for the speedy deletion and the no warning that you were going to do it. Why not give a notification and allow the NEW USER poster to save the matierial and or delete it himself. Please show some respect, Oh, can you show me where on the main wikimedia commons page that it prohibits posting of text material. Next time use the {delete} command then delete

"Wikimedia Commons is a media repository that is created and maintained not by paid-for artists, but by volunteers. Its name "Wikimedia Commons" is derived from that of the umbrella project "Wikimedia" managing all Wikimedia projects and from the plural noun "commons" as its contents are shared by different language versions and different kinds of Wikimedia projects. Thus it provides a central repository for freely licensed photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text, video clips, and media of all sorts that are useful for any Wikimedia project." I read this to mean posting my spoken text would be OK. H0riz0n.

Bot requests[edit]

Hey, how's it going? I stopped doing multiwiki bot work here because too many people left me messages saying things along the lines of "your account is in violation of _this_that_and_the_other_thing_, you will be blocked if you continue to ignore our policies". Basically, people wanted me to get bot status on *every* wiki...and I really don't know if that's possible. Ideas? We could hide the fact that it's a bot by renaming it something like "delinker", maybe? But then there are those people... I don't know.--Orgullomoore 19:24, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, probably not the best idea to do a fraud. I can't wait until the universal log, that should be high on the developer's priority list I should think. Here are some of the messages: 2 are here, and then they were reluctant to giving me status on Commons..., some blibber blabber about policies here, in fr: they mark me as a non-authorized bot, sl: wasn't very happy to see me either..., They apply for Orgullobot to be removed on Meta, and I'm sure theres more, but I don't really have time to search all the wikis for stuff they say about me ;). Summarizing, it became harder for me to convince people not to block me or have me banned from the project than it was to actually program the bots, so I gave it a rest.--Orgullomoore 05:21, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I like your plan, but it's all dependent on the developer's implementing a universal login. We really need that! Everything you mention in your 6 step plan is doable and easy. What am I up to these days if not botting? I bot around and edit alot in es:, and...basically nothing, *sigh*

Re renaming categories[edit]

Hello, the renaming is no problem [lowercasing the "R" in Category:Maps of European Regions] but unfortunately categories can't be renamed (AKA moved) like normal pages. Each image has to be edited to belong to the new category... It's a pain, huh?

ARRG, yes!  I came across Category:Maps of European Regions while spending time trying to sort out the global and regional maps; during this process I created two categories (Category:Graduated world maps and Category:World membership maps) that I think might be better named, but didn't worry at the time as I assumed it would be straightforward to rename them. But now...

You can try asking a bot operator to make the change for you. See Category:Commons bots. I am thinking of getting a bot of my own to do tasks like this, but I don't have one yet.

Thanks for this suggestion (and for your message). I'll aim to look into it soon and let you know if I find something that might be useful to us both. Not knowing any better, I now suppose it's bots that sort out the category renaming on the Wikipediae...

Glad to have learned of this shortcoming; thanks again. Best wishes, David Kernow 23:14, 31 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photo Copyright Rules[edit]

Thank you, Pfctdayelise, for your kind comments on my talk page. I didn't realize just how convoluted the copyright rules regarding photographs could be when I submitted my deletion request. If I had known my request would cause so much heated confusion I would have a given fuller explanation of my concerns when I first posted the request. I suppose it's no surprise that legislation isn't written in clear language. Ande B. 04:05, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

catscan[edit]

You are correct- I was not aware of Catscan. Thanks for pointing me too it.

However, merely exposing database query functionality that is inherent in MediaWiki's design is the first step only. Ever used the Library of Congress search page? Until average users (even grandmothers) can make use of such interfaces, my comment on use of broad categories is the same.

Until searches on attributes like categories is efficient, and user friendly (pick lists, etc.), then the utility of adding dates of photos on a mass scale will be pretty limitted.

Thanks again for the pointer. It really is exciting where this is all going.

Warm regards,
-Mak 16:34, 1 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright advice I[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise, I need your advice. I have been offered the full use of photos on a website to use to illustrate my articles, & I have an email exchange for this. The website is of an underwater diving charter company, & the photos are those given to the company over the years by diving clients. The company therefore 'owns' the photos, although getting proof for each individual photo would be difficult or impossible, & it's the last thing I would ask the company to spend time doing. I would appreciate your comments on this & what kind of permission I should cite when uploading the images. Thank you very much. GrahamBould 08:23, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, As some photos (hopefully the majority) have been taken by staff, the company would have ownership, wouldn't they? Maybe you can advise what agreement I should get for those pictures (as well as identifying them) as a separate exercise. Thanks. GrahamBould 15:53, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your advice, which will apply to a couple more diving companies I am approaching. I will stick to the rule that I will only accept photos taken by staff (either commissioned by the company, or donated to the company with ALL rights), & get email confirmation. In these cases, could you please tell me what 'licence' or statement I should add while uploading the file? Thanks. As for your tip about file size, I will also ask for the original files, as they were obviously cut down for the web. GrahamBould 15:48, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright advice II[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise, Would you believe it, I have another copyright issue. Re Miss Britain III 500.jpg, there are conditions which I don't fully understand. The background is: the original (& others in a set) were commissioned by Hubert Scott-paine as advertising for his company, the British Power Boat Company. He died in 1954. The originals do not now exist, & were probably discarded after the war when the company closed. Only copies now exist. H S-P's family inherited his assets including these copies. Hope you can advise me what I should be doing GrahamBould 20:15, 3 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The painting was done in 1933 or 1934. Looking forward to hearing if your colleague thinks this is OK. If it is could you please let me know what 'licences' or statement would be OK to replace the threatening ones there now. Thank you very much. GrahamBould 15:48, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The painting is "Miss_Britain_III_500.jpg". Just checked the rules myself & I think we just scrape in - "If the work was created before 1969 with an unknown author then several scenarios can apply: If the work was published before 30 August 1989 then copyright expires 70 years after first publication." This would mean that copyright expired 31 Dec 2004 at the latest. Does this look right to you? GrahamBould 06:55, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Image:Miss_Britain_III_500.jpg Actually, I think I must have uploaded it to Wikipedia, not Commons. That's why you can't see it. If you look at the Wikipedia article "Miss Britain III" you should spot it. I cannot be precise about the date, but I am relying on a local historian who knew people (now deceased) who saw the original painting on Hubert Scott-Paine's office wall in the mid 1930s. Reproductions of this painting are in public use - only last weekend I saw one on public display during a historic power boat display near Portsmouth, Hampshire. GrahamBould 09:34, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
"That's no indication at all that it's public domain". Quite right, but many of the articles, photos, etc, including the reproduction picture in question, were donated by Scott-Paine's family to the organisation, & the Southampton Museum. "Likely they paid for their copy". No, they didn't.

Have checked the chart through your PDF link & it seems to confirm that we're OK. So, what I propose is to upload the picture to WikiCommons, with the same statement, but I'n not sure whether I can use the {{PD-UK}}) tag if it doesn't exist. Will it be created anytime soon? Would the monitors accept an unwritten tag? I suppose I should then delete the WikiPedia copy, don't want duplicates do we? GrahamBould 15:45, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Have done all that you suggest - perhaps you could check the Commons image statements at "Image:Miss Britain III with battleship.jpg". Thank you very much for your patience. GrahamBould 07:40, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More wikinews stuff[edit]

I think the main issue people had was not that images changed, but that images got deleted. The biggest problem is some new user uploads an image to commons, not knowing anything about copyright issues, a month passes someone finds it at commons and deletes, and then a month later we find that the article has an image missing. Different versions are not horibly bad. All versions are kept, and can be restored. Things can't be undeleted. Again the biggest problem is people upload and leave.

I plan to start going through images at wikinews some time in the near future. I'll try and sort some of this out then. Thanks for your intreast. Bawolff 23

Sorry, but that was not Arabic. I think it might be a Copyright Violation. It seems similar to http://www.irna.ir/fa/news/view/line-10/8412111175135815.htm . It could be Farsi. Kaveh should be able to advice.

Regarding the sysop. I am already a sysop at ar.wiki. I am not sure whether I have the time to help as an admin at commons now; I am in the mid of my Ph.D. work. Yet, I will be very glad to help, if I can, with any Arabic related question.

Maybe I will consider it in July, if I ever survive my Ph.D. ;-) .Thanks for your suggestion. --Tarawneh 04:05, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

US tralilers tag[edit]

Hi! I see your changes in the tag of Tralilers. Ok for the info about the copyright notice, but the specific about "before 1923" isn't need (IMHO), because before 1923 the images are {{PD-US}}. Please give me your opinion. Thanks, bye :-) --RED DEVIL 666 06:04, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the .orig proposal[edit]

(copied from my talk page in case you wouldn't see it there)

This proposal is how we solve the problem. The problem is that a careless user might click on a Wikipedia link and instantly get a computer infection of some sort. Worse yet, if we care, is that some users run crummy old Microsoft junk that can get infected just by browsing to the wrong page. The .orig file extension stops this. The browser will no longer recognize the file. The only option is to save the file. If you then delibrately rename the file and execute it, you're chosing to take a risk. That's OK. It's not so OK when there isn't a delibrate choice being made. AlbertCahalan 07:19, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When I say "rename", I mean you have to change the file extension. Windows will even warn about doing so, and it hides the file extensions by default. So this is a somewhat advanced operation that can not be accidentally performed by browsing a wiki. Note that we have this problem today. I can save a Windows EXE file as setup.exe.ogg and tell people to run it after renaming it. So the feature is unofficially available and isn't thought to be causing problems. I merely propose to reserve a special file extension to make this ability explicit. AlbertCahalan 15:54, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kaveh! I was wondering if you would be able to tell me if this article is in Farsi, and if so, what does it say? Should it be deleted? I think probably because it has no images, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks! pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:08, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW-- have you considering becoming an admin on Commons?? I am certain there would be support for you, because we need all the language diversity we can get. :) If you like I can nominate you, or you can do a self-nomination. Let me know. cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 00:10, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it is indeed in Persian/Farsi. It talks about a mosque in en:Borujerd and is, in anycase, from a copyrighted source. Incidentally, I would be happy to help as an admin. As it happens, I was just discussing this very issue with a colleague over at the Persian Wikipedia. We often run across articles about Iranian/Persian related subjects with missing images, so it would help if someone more intimate with the area helped in tagging/recovering them, all the more reason why I appreciate you asking about that entry. I do, however, have only around 90 edits. If you think that's about OK I would nominate myself. Thank you for your concern. Kaveh 11:45, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

png and svg[edit]

Hi. I don't delete the used .png images. I deleted only the .png not used in wiki projects. The used .png are not deleted by me, and I not orphanize the .png. My idea is to delete only the orphan .png because are really redundant, but the used .png are not a problem. If is mistoken delete the orphaned .png too, please repeate me it, because I don't know if the orphaned can be deleted or not. Thanks, bye :-) --RED DEVIL 666 05:00, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant PNGs[edit]

Hi Emc2, regarding your comment deleting redundant images is fully compliant with commons policy. - this is true but only in the case of FULLY REDUNDANT images. Similar but not exactly the same images are not fully redundant. No one should be forced to be convert to SVG. Please don't change uses of PNG images to SVG images. By all means let people know the SVG exists, and give a link on the PNG image page to the SVG one, but DON'T force anyone to use SVGs by making mass changes. It is extremely unpopular and counter to the aims of Commons, which is to provide an image repository for all Wikimedia projects. If people want to use out-dated formats, we should let them. We are in no danger of running out of disk space so there is no urgent rush to convert quickly and delete all the PNGs. If the SVG is actually an equivalent or superior image, people will naturally migrate to using it over time. In the meantime, may I suggest you save your activities for more urgent tasks, such as orphan or untagged images. Regards, pfctdayelise (translate?) 02:35, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This may be a good way to work, but think about Image:Copyleft.svg. It was really better than the PNG one, even scalable! The problem was, that it was used by more than 100 pages. Giving the link to any of them would be simply impossible! So I decided to make mass changes, and I orphanized it in about one hour. The same for Image:Baustelle.svg, just think that PNG one was used about 70 times only on zh.wiki (no templates, manually included), therefore I worked as a "human bot", and substituted 'em all. What I'm trying to say is that sometimes you may be right, but SVG version are often better that PNG ones, and mine is usually a good way to work. Perhaps I should be more careful when orphanizing PNG versions, and sometimes I should only give the link to the vectorial image and wait for an answer. However, thanks for your suggestions. --Emc² (Contact Me ) 10:46, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ok, I know the sitation. I don't delete more png, but probably they must not tagged with redundant. Bye --RED DEVIL 666 09:10, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

File Deletion[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise, I uploaded this file: Suezichthys_arquatus_(Rainbow_slender_wrasse)ezichthys_arquatus.gif & made a hash of the name. I then uploaded it again under the correct name, & want to delete the file above. How do I do that? GrahamBould 18:31, 9 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. You contacted me concerning this image a couple months ago, and I apologize for not getting back to you sooner (I don't use Commons very much). I have no evidence that this image is in the public domain, and now that I know more about image copyrights (I uploaded this image a long time ago), I believe it is copyrighted and should be deleted. Thanks for your time, and let me know if there's anything I can do. EWS23 05:43, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photographer Category[edit]

Hi, I have a series of underwater photographs taken by a diver who is happy to give up his copyright in return for attribution. I want to set up a Category for the photographer, & think I can do that OK. But could you suggest a wording & template for the copyright please - the photographer's name is Ian Skipworth, but is this something I can myself? And is there a template email I could copy to get the release documented? GrahamBould 16:05, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The email template is fine except for the "work" part - there is a stream of photos being released to me, so can you please suggest a wording so that I don't need to get this for each separate photo. Thanks GrahamBould 16:43, 12 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have created a "Category:Photographs by Ian Skipworth". Perhaps you could check it out & confirm OK. Can we sort out Template yet? or do you need first photo uploaded? GrahamBould 07:12, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pages of non existant users[edit]

Hi I saw that you also noticed a user page of a nonexistant user and thatfor deleted it. User:Duesentrieb provided me with a list of all userpages of non existant users so that I can delete them after manual checking as these non existant users can cause quite some confusion... Have a look at User:Arnomane/bad user pages. If you're interested we can work up that list together. Arnomane 00:49, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A month ago you left a message for User talk:MakThorpe, a user who doesn't exist. Presumably you meant User:Makthorpe ... Anyway, I just deleted the page. User:dbenbenn 02:13, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your tip on linking images[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise,

Thank you for your tip on how to link to images in a text. I'dd edit my contribution right away.

As to the genitalia discussion: I quite agree with you that while female genitalia are sufficiently illustrated in general terms, we could do with the variations you have described. Also, I do agree that this might be useful in convincing women that tehy should not allow themselves to be intimidated by some ridiculous ideal of perfection. If we can manage to contribute towards this without getting vulgar, it would be a great idea. (Actually, we're not off-topic...)

Best regards, MartinD 13:41, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, how do you pronounce your nickname?

Ah, now I see! :) MartinD 07:38, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion[edit]

Good evening !

Concerning the deletion of Category:Specific japanese stroke order,

I thought that it didn't precise enough the elements is this category : black and white pictures showing the Japanese different stroke order of some Chinese characters. This category doesn't contain animated GIF (like this) or red-colored characters (like this).

But I also didn't know that the sign "/" was forbidden in a category title.

Now, I'm thinking about a new and correct title. May "Japanese stroke order BW pictures" right ones? (and "Japanese stroke order Animated GIF", "...Red-colored", etc)?

If not, which one could you recommand to me?

I wish you consider my request and apologize for my error,

thank you in advance.

--Wikic 19:25, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Do the categories with a "/" have to be deleted?
--Wikic 11:36, 20 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I will change these titles to shorter and more 'classic' ones (probably like what I have written in my first message) and post the old at speedy deletion. Thanks for your help!

Please move a picture[edit]

Hi,

I managed to create a picture with an awkward name (Great Belt Bridge .jpg). Could you please move it to e.g. GreatBeltBridgeTRJ2.JPG. Haros 21:11, 19 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I found this editor doing mass changes to User, User talk(I didn't revert plain welcome notes), and Image pages I followed behind and reverted his edits, Also User:Thryduulf correct some of his earlier edits. I also checked his contributions all are from today but noticed some of hiss early edits were to User pages which had no history, I check those users out to see if they had uploaded images, where I found images/legit edits I removed his remarks(most offensive) which left the pages blank. The only real problem was for some pages he showed as moving form editor A to Editor B I haven't touch those pages not sure how to fix can you check please

Thanks Gnangarra 15:10, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories[edit]

Ok. I was not aware of that. Thank you.--Garabombo 04:32, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. No, that was intentional. When I create vector graphic images, I use "Draw" from OpenOffice.org. I upload the image Image:MenstrualCycle.png AND the vector graphic file Image:MenstrualCycle.sxd so that other users can easily edit and improve the image. In this case for example to create Image:MenstrualCycle cs.svg in czech and Image:Ciclo mestruale.jpg in italian (I think). Since OpenOffice is available freely for multiple platforms this should be no problem. Happy editing -- Chris 73 06:13, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, there are at least 4 translations, see Image:MenstrualCycle.png for details. -- Chris 73 06:27, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Quick Info: As per Commons:File types, OpenOffice file types are allowed. -- Chris 73 16:46, 22 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Use of talk pages[edit]

What is the etiquette on Discussion "talk" pages? It seems to me that it is pretty egregious to delete someone else's remarks unless there were a good reason- like vandalism/ slander/ intentionally hurtful words. Is there a policy/etiquette about not deleting remarks, or is it just like any other wiki text?

Are the rules any different if the comments are one's own User:Talk pages?

Thanks. -Mak 03:15, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am refering to a note I left on someone's else's page which they deleted. It was critical but not angry or with intemperate language. Because of the nature of the controversy, others will visit this talk page. I don't think it is fair that the person in question can make it seem as if their is only one side to the controversy by actively suppressing expression of contrary views. On the other hand, if User: spaces are considerred "owned" by the user they correspond to, then of course I will respect that rule. -Mak 04:11, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I had a look at your contribs and I believe I know what you are referring to. In this case I believe Fred Chessplayer's comment and revert was correct. You have been able to state your case elsewhere and that will certainly be read by people interested in the issue. The archive of the user's talk page is easily accessible and will certainly be viewed by people who haven't made up their minds on this issue yet.
Many users reserve the right to remove irrelevant comments from their talk page. I don't see that as censorship or suppression of information. Since you were not addressing the user directly, it's not really an appropriate user talk page comment. So, I wouldn't really worry about it. pfctdayelise (translate?) 04:30, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I agree Fred had a point, and as you see I moved it to the nomination page with some rewriting. But I thought it was ok to leave a reference to the controversy- it is relevant to the subject being discussed on the talk page- DennisS's nomination. No- I was not referring to Fred's revert. I am referring to this revert made by DennisS:
Oppose strongly, and urge anyone to carefully consider this for reasons stated on the nominations template. Template:Administrators/Requests and votes/Denniss. -Mak 23:38, 24 April 2006 (UTC)
DennisS accompanied the revert with this comment: Rev, keep out of my talk page, you have been instructed were to post this BS.
I stated my case elsewhere as you recommended. My statement is pertinent to the topic of the section. DennisS just doesn't want to see any dissent in the topic. Am I not entitled to post a link to the case I made on his page? Or is he entitled to silence criticism of him in the first logical place where criticisms would first arise?
Folks come to DennisS's page to complain or praise him for his actions. Some are right, some are wrong. Some may come to his page because they are perplexed about something he has done and may realize they are not alone. Are folks entitled to post criticisms? Maybe they are, maybe they aren't because. But if they aren't, where else will a casual contributor find out that there is a pattern of comments similar to their feelings? That's how I found out that others were in the same boat I found myself in.
-Mak 05:14, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Just as it would be inappropriate to leave comments encouraging other people to vote for him, it is also inappropriate to leave comments encouraging to oppose. You are not even adressing DenisS, but other users ("urge anyone"). You have made your point well enough in the RfA. You can hardly accuse him of "silencing criticism" when critical comments are clearly viewable in his talk archive and on the RfA, I think that is a very unfair criticism. If you have some specific criticism to take up with DenisS personally then it is appropriate to do that on his talk page, but I don't see that that's what you were doing.
I would really just leave this one alone. You have visibly stated your case and as I said, anyone who hadn't already made their mind up will no doubt take your comments into consideration. pfctdayelise (translate?) 05:31, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
DennisS has instructed me to keep out of his talk page, and from you have stated, he is entitled to. If that's the rules, then I will abide by them. -Mak 05:48, 25 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Too few LB's for a Help-Desk ...[edit]

Hiya, question for you: the license (copyrighted free use) and description (fair use) of this image seem to be in conflict with each other. There's an anonymous contributor on nl.wikipedia who keeps adding this image to nl:Timea Vagvoelgyi; I and other users think it's not allowed according to nl.wiki image policies (who are as strict as commons policies, maybe even stricter). Could you help me out with this? Cheers, NielsF 21:57, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, Duesentrieb deleted it in the meantime (because it was fair use). Cheers, NielsF 23:55, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MediaWiki 'account too new' page[edit]

Hi David, I think you know which MediaWiki page it is that gives users the warning 'You can't upload over that existing image becayse your account is too new'...correct? If so, could you please edit it to include a link to the Commons:Help desk directing people there for moving/renaming requests? Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:51, 26 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Do you know about Special:Allmessages? At that page, you can search for "account is too new" and easily find what message it is. Anyway, I applied your change to MediaWiki:Fileexists-forbidden. User:dbenbenn 03:20, 30 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
