Abuse by User:Frombenny?

Hi Elise.

I'd like to point out that [User:Frombenny] has posted again the image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:France_with_Corsica_%28demis%29.png - which had been deleted following the appropriate process - and commented the "new" image he's posted as follows:

"Map of France with Corsica. This version is with an indication that Corsica is not located at its real location but in this map because it's part of the country. Hope it won't be deleted again. The point is not to have an accurate position of the Corsica.)"

Well, the point, in a geographical (not an "ideographic") map such as this, is to exactly have an accurate position of Corsica. Much more when the maps in question are intended to be LOCATOR maps!!!

Besides, the reposting is, IMHO, rather abusive, since it has been done without addressing what I had explained when candidating the image for deletion: (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:Deletion_requests#Image:France_with_Corsica_.28demis.29.png) adding a visible line indicating the dispacement is mandatory as well as sufficient in such cases. I proposed, in this case, to simply remove the map because who has fabricated it cared even to invent the batimetry around Corsica and Provence shore in order to falsify the map and increase the impression that the Island actually lies where it doesn't. Thus, the cutting line would be not enough, because the false batimetry would be not fixed by the added line..

IMHO, [User:Frombenny] should have raised his opposition to the deletion offering valid points to counter my observations in the appropriate place, instead of ignoring the discussion opened [1] and going ahead with his reposting of the image which still features a fabricated batimetry.

Furthermore, he has removed the tag that I had added to the other images candidated for deletion, falsely claiming to having modified the images:

UploadingScreenshots of Open Source Program

Firstly, I have re-uploaded the image in the above link in the link below. I did so in order to create a more descriptive name for the image. I just want to make sure I did that correctly.

Secondly, Milkdrop is an open source program, released under the "BSD template license". Me and my wife created the presets the above two screenshots where created from, and we also took the screen shots.

I'm pretty sure this allows me to upload them several times over licence wise. But I don't understand the legal speak well enough to make sure I have licensed everything correctly.

Hopefully when I get enough screenshots uploaded, I can expand the milkdrop article stub in Wikipedia

RE-Categories should be in English

Unfortunately due to technical limitations, we don't currently have proper internationalisation for categories, and we have decided to keep categories in English until we can implement that. Articles can be in other languages, that's no problem. So what is this category about?

Fish

I guess I'm not entirely clear on what you're asking that's not already covered by Commons:WikiProject Tree of Life. I think a filled-out fish section will have mostly species as gallery-type pages sitting in family categories, with some of the larger genera as cats also. We started with mostly order cats, but things have been gradually migrating down to families as coverage improves, since most fish families are more reasonably sized than orders. Yeah, we probably have enough experience to choose recommended "groups" in each area. One of my underlying principles for commons in general is to mirror the wikipedias as closely as possible, which makes it easier to find appropriate pics (for many taxa we now have good illustrations, but nobody working on wikipedias knows they exist!). Anyway, I am in discussion with the artist who has given me full rights to use his drawings, but I now need to go back to him to get full commercial use rights. Wikinews

Thank you for your intreast in wikinews and commons cooperating. (sorry this is a little belated). previously WE use to upload exclusivly to commons when permitted by commons licensing, and delete any local images that wern't fair use. (and before that we didn't even have local upload enabled) Now that theres a lot of people mad at commons, its about half and half for new images. (eventhough the board doesn't allow us (to my knowladge) to have pd images over at wikinews theres now wikinews:Category:pd image). This is proably a problem, that I'm not sure how best to approach, and since you said on n:WN:WC that you were intreasted in commons, and sisterproject cooperation. Bot requests

Hey, how's it going? I stopped doing multiwiki bot work here because too many people left me messages saying things along the lines of "your account is in violation of _this_that_and_the_other_thing_, you will be blocked if you continue to ignore our policies". Basically, people wanted me to get bot status on *every* wiki...and I really don't know if that's possible. Ideas? We could hide the fact that it's a bot by renaming it something like "delinker", maybe? But then there are those people... I don't know.--Orgullomoore 19:24, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, probably not the best idea to do a fraud. I can't wait until the universal log, that should be high on the developer's priority list I should think. Here are some of the messages: 2 are here, and then they were reluctant to giving me status on Commons..., some blibber blabber about policies here, in fr: they mark me as a non-authorized bot, sl: wasn't very happy to see me either..., They apply for Orgullobot to be removed on Meta, and I'm sure theres more, but I don't really have time to search all the wikis for stuff they say about me ;). I like your plan, but it's all dependent on the developer's implementing a universal login. We really need that! Everything you mention in your 6 step plan is doable and easy. What am I up to these days if not botting? I bot around and edit alot in es:, and...basically nothing, *sigh*

Re renaming categories

Hello, the renaming is no problem [lowercasing the "R" in Category:Maps of European Regions] but unfortunately categories can't be renamed (AKA moved) like normal pages. Each image has to be edited to belong to the new category... It's a pain, huh?

ARRG, yes!  I came across Category:Maps of European Regions while spending time trying to sort out the global and regional maps; during this process I created two categories (Category:Graduated world maps and Category:World membership maps) that I think might be better named, but didn't worry at the time as I assumed it would be straightforward to rename them. But now...

You can try asking a bot operator to make the change for you. See Category:Commons bots. I am thinking of getting a bot of my own to do tasks like this, but I don't have one yet.

Thanks for this suggestion (and for your message). I'll aim to look into it soon and let you know if I find something that might be useful to us both. Not knowing any better, I now suppose it's bots that sort out the category renaming on the Wikipediae...

You are correct- I was not aware of Catscan. Thanks for pointing me too it.

However, merely exposing database query functionality that is inherent in MediaWiki's design is the first step only. Ever used the Library of Congress search page? Until average users (even grandmothers) can make use of such interfaces, my comment on use of broad categories is the same.

Until searches on attributes like categories is efficient, and user friendly (pick lists, etc.), then the utility of adding dates of photos on a mass scale will be pretty limitted.

Copyright advice I

Hi Pfctdayelise, I need your advice. I have been offered the full use of photos on a website to use to illustrate my articles, & I have an email exchange for this. The website is of an underwater diving charter company, & the photos are those given to the company over the years by diving clients. The company therefore 'owns' the photos, although getting proof for each individual photo would be difficult or impossible, & it's the last thing I would ask the company to spend time doing. Copyright advice II

Hi Pfctdayelise, Would you believe it, I have another copyright issue. Re Miss Britain III 500.jpg, there are conditions which I don't fully understand. The background is: the original (& others in a set) were commissioned by Hubert Scott-paine as advertising for his company, the British Power Boat Company. He died in 1954. The originals do not now exist, & were probably discarded after the war when the company closed. Only copies now exist. H S-P's family inherited his assets including these copies. The painting is "Miss_Britain_III_500.jpg". Just checked the rules myself & I think we just scrape in - "If the work was created before 1969 with an unknown author then several scenarios can apply: If the work was published before 30 August 1989 then copyright expires 70 years after first publication." This would mean that copyright expired 31 Dec 2004 at the latest. Does this look right to you? GrahamBould 06:55, 5 April 2006 (UTC)

Image:Miss_Britain_III_500.jpg Actually, I think I must have uploaded it to Wikipedia, not Commons. That's why you can't see it. If you look at the Wikipedia article "Miss Britain III" you should spot it. I cannot be precise about the date, but I am relying on a local historian who knew people (now deceased) who saw the original painting on Hubert Scott-Paine's office wall in the mid 1930s. Reproductions of this painting are in public use - only last weekend I saw one on public display during a historic power boat display near Portsmouth, Hampshire. "That's no indication at all that it's public domain". Quite right, but many of the articles, photos, etc, including the reproduction picture in question, were donated by Scott-Paine's family to the organisation, & the Southampton Museum. "Likely they paid for their copy". No, they didn't.

Have checked the chart through your PDF link & it seems to confirm that we're OK. So, what I propose is to upload the picture to WikiCommons, with the same statement, but I'n not sure whether I can use the {{PD-UK}}) tag if it doesn't exist. Will it be created anytime soon? More wikinews stuff

I think the main issue people had was not that images changed, but that images got deleted. The biggest problem is some new user uploads an image to commons, not knowing anything about copyright issues, a month passes someone finds it at commons and deletes, and then a month later we find that the article has an image missing. Different versions are not horibly bad. All versions are kept, and can be restored. Things can't be undeleted. Again the biggest problem is people upload and leave.

I plan to start going through images at wikinews some time in the near future. I'll try and sort some of this out then. Thanks for your intreast. Bawolff 23

the .orig proposal

This proposal is how we solve the problem. The problem is that a careless user might click on a Wikipedia link and instantly get a computer infection of some sort. Worse yet, if we care, is that some users run crummy old Microsoft junk that can get infected just by browsing to the wrong page. The .orig file extension stops this. The browser will no longer recognize the file. The only option is to save the file. If you then delibrately rename the file and execute it, you're chosing to take a risk. That's OK. It's not so OK when there isn't a delibrate choice being made. AlbertCahalan 07:19, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

When I say "rename", I mean you have to change the file extension. Windows will even warn about doing so, and it hides the file extensions by default. So this is a somewhat advanced operation that can not be accidentally performed by browsing a wiki. Note that we have this problem today. I can save a Windows EXE file as setup.exe.ogg and tell people to run it after renaming it. So the feature is unofficially available and isn't thought to be causing problems. Yes, it is indeed in Persian/Farsi. It talks about a mosque in en:Borujerd and is, in anycase, from a copyrighted source. Incidentally, I would be happy to help as an admin. As it happens, I was just discussing this very issue with a colleague over at the Persian Wikipedia. We often run across articles about Iranian/Persian related subjects with missing images, so it would help if someone more intimate with the area helped in tagging/recovering them, all the more reason why I appreciate you asking about that entry. Hi. I don't delete the used .png images. I deleted only the .png not used in wiki projects. The used .png are not deleted by me, and I not orphanize the .png. My idea is to delete only the orphan .png because are really redundant, but the used .png are not a problem. Hi Emc2, regarding your comment deleting redundant images is fully compliant with commons policy. - this is true but only in the case of FULLY REDUNDANT images. Similar but not exactly the same images are not fully redundant. No one should be forced to be convert to SVG. Please don't change uses of PNG images to SVG images. By all means let people know the SVG exists, and give a link on the PNG image page to the SVG one, but DON'T force anyone to use SVGs by making mass changes. It is extremely unpopular and counter to the aims of Commons, which is to provide an image repository for all Wikimedia projects. If people want to use out-dated formats, we should let them. We are in no danger of running out of disk space so there is no urgent rush to convert quickly and delete all the PNGs. If the SVG is actually an equivalent or superior image, people will naturally migrate to using it over time. This may be a good way to work, but think about Image:Copyleft.svg. It was really better than the PNG one, even scalable! The problem was, that it was used by more than 100 pages. Giving the link to any of them would be simply impossible! So I decided to make mass changes, and I orphanized it in about one hour. The same for Image:Baustelle.svg, just think that PNG one was used about 70 times only on zh.wiki (no templates, manually included), therefore I worked as a "human bot", and substituted 'em all. What I'm trying to say is that sometimes you may be right, but SVG version are often better that PNG ones, and mine is usually a good way to work. Perhaps I should be more careful when orphanizing PNG versions, and sometimes I should only give the link to the vectorial image and wait for an answer. Photographer Category

Hi, I have a series of underwater photographs taken by a diver who is happy to give up his copyright in return for attribution. I want to set up a Category for the photographer, & think I can do that OK. But could you suggest a wording & template for the copyright please - the photographer's name is Ian Skipworth, but is this something I can myself? Pages of non existant users

Hi I saw that you also noticed a user page of a nonexistant user and thatfor deleted it. User:Duesentrieb provided me with a list of all userpages of non existant users so that I can delete them after manual checking as these non existant users can cause quite some confusion... As to the genitalia discussion: I quite agree with you that while female genitalia are sufficiently illustrated in general terms, we could do with the variations you have described. Also, I do agree that this might be useful in convincing women that tehy should not allow themselves to be intimidated by some ridiculous ideal of perfection. If we can manage to contribute towards this without getting vulgar, it would be a great idea. (Actually, we're not off-topic...)

Deletion

Good evening !

Concerning the deletion of Category:Specific japanese stroke order,

I thought that it didn't precise enough the elements is this category : black and white pictures showing the Japanese different stroke order of some Chinese characters. This category doesn't contain animated GIF (like this) or red-colored characters (like this).

But I also didn't know that the sign "/" was forbidden in a category title.

Now, I'm thinking about a new and correct title. May "Japanese stroke order BW pictures" right ones? (and "Japanese stroke order Animated GIF", "...Red-colored", etc)?

If not, which one could you recommand to me?

User:Mr. Loyola College - edits

Hi I found this editor doing mass changes to User, User talk(I didn't revert plain welcome notes), and Image pages I followed behind and reverted his edits, Also User:Thryduulf correct some of his earlier edits. I also checked his contributions all are from today but noticed some of hiss early edits were to User pages which had no history, I check those users out to see if they had uploaded images, where I found images/legit edits I removed his remarks(most offensive) which left the pages blank. The only real problem was for some pages he showed as moving form editor A to Editor B I haven't touch those pages not sure how to fix can you check please

Hi. No, that was intentional. When I create vector graphic images, I use "Draw" from OpenOffice.org. I upload the image Image:MenstrualCycle.png AND the vector graphic file Image:MenstrualCycle.sxd so that other users can easily edit and improve the image. In this case for example to create Image:MenstrualCycle cs.svg in czech and Image:Ciclo mestruale.jpg in italian (I think). Use of talk pages

What is the etiquette on Discussion "talk" pages? It seems to me that it is pretty egregious to delete someone else's remarks unless there were a good reason- like vandalism/ slander/ intentionally hurtful words. Is there a policy/etiquette about not deleting remarks, or is it just like any other wiki text?

Are the rules any different if the comments are one's own User:Talk pages?

I am refering to a note I left on someone's else's page which they deleted. It was critical but not angry or with intemperate language. Because of the nature of the controversy, others will visit this talk page. I don't think it is fair that the person in question can make it seem as if their is only one side to the controversy by actively suppressing expression of contrary views. On the other hand, if User: spaces are considerred "owned" by the user they correspond to, then of course I will respect that rule. -Mak 04:11, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

I had a look at your contribs and I believe I know what you are referring to. In this case I believe Fred Chessplayer's comment and revert was correct. You have been able to state your case elsewhere and that will certainly be read by people interested in the issue. The archive of the user's talk page is easily accessible and will certainly be viewed by people who haven't made up their minds on this issue yet.

Many users reserve the right to remove irrelevant comments from their talk page. I don't see that as censorship or suppression of information. I stated my case elsewhere as you recommended. My statement is pertinent to the topic of the section. DennisS just doesn't want to see any dissent in the topic. Am I not entitled to post a link to the case I made on his page? Or is he entitled to silence criticism of him in the first logical place where criticisms would first arise?

Folks come to DennisS's page to complain or praise him for his actions. Some are right, some are wrong. Some may come to his page because they are perplexed about something he has done and may realize they are not alone. Are folks entitled to post criticisms? Maybe they are, maybe they aren't because. But if they aren't, where else will a casual contributor find out that there is a pattern of comments similar to their feelings? That's how I found out that others were in the same boat I found myself in.

Just as it would be inappropriate to leave comments encouraging other people to vote for him, it is also inappropriate to leave comments encouraging to oppose. You are not even adressing DenisS, but other users ("urge anyone"). You have made your point well enough in the RfA. You can hardly accuse him of "silencing criticism" when critical comments are clearly viewable in his talk archive and on the RfA, I think that is a very unfair criticism. If you have some specific criticism to take up with DenisS personally then it is appropriate to do that on his talk page, but I don't see that that's what you were doing.

Hiya, question for you: the license (copyrighted free use) and description (fair use) of this image seem to be in conflict with each other. There's an anonymous contributor on nl.wikipedia who keeps adding this image to nl:Timea Vagvoelgyi; I and other users think it's not allowed according to nl.wiki image policies (who are as strict as commons policies, maybe even stricter).
