Sorry for answering so late, but over the last 3 weeks I was really busy. Please delete that picture. The aquatic plant can't be determined correctly and in the german wikipedia it is said that this picture is also obsolete. Fabelfroh 10:39, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for the suggestion!

Yesterday I went through most of the help pages and documentation on commons and I was not able to find any specific information about this problem. Even the topic how to request a page deletion is a well kept secret. I'm not blaming anybody, I'm just rying to explain why I downloaded a new version of the pictures. I'm sure many other users are experiencing the same problems. --Folini 15:27, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried very hard, but the result is that I created a different picture without replacing the original one. For example I was trying to replace the Casa di Riposo per Musicisti a Milano.png with teh equivalent jpg version. I selected Upload a new version of this image from the page of the image to replace and as first result I recived an error message like corrupted file (infact, the destination file name was still .png, while the downloaded file was .jpg). Then I changed the destination file name name to match the souce file name as .jpg) and the download succeded, but as a result now I have two different pictures:

Please, can you explain how I can just replace a picture switching file format?

One more question, how long it take for a picture to be deleted after i added the picture to the category Candidates for speedy deletion?

Thank you, --Folini 06:02, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Er, why exactly is "LT-Army-OF1d.jpg" a better name? It seems more cryptic, and thus less useful, IMO. Is the original name inaccurate? pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:47, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oh no there is a reason for that. Rank insignias comes in series. If is very easy to use them when file is named like this. The original name of the rank exists on the article description page.
  1. LT is Latvias code (I dont mind its rename to LAT and I am kicking myself for not doing this)
  2. Army is the branch, I also intend to do Navy, Air force etc.
  3. OF-1d is the NATO equavalent code. OF-5 would be colonel, OF-1d is cadet/student officer.
See the usage of such images in Ranks and insignia of NATO armies officers.
Hope this explains the matter. I can explain in greater detail if you'd like that. :)

OK. Never mind. It is a clear deletion case and I thought I was helping. But perhaps it's none of my business. Wlos 18:20, 2 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the GFDL's[edit]

Hi,

A little bit late, but that is because I was away. The GFDL's are removed from the images like you asked, I think i've had them all now. If not feel free to change those which still need to be changed. Thanks SportsPhotographer 07:20, 3 March 2006 (UTC)

Image:France with Corsica (demis).png[edit]

Hi, I noticed your message about the Subject. I did as you suggested, I added the COM:DEL tag in place of the one you removed. Anyway, it's quite hard to understand what needs to be discussed about the blatant falsification of that map, as anyone can easily verify by taking a look at any ACCURATE map or, better, satellite image of the interested area. Thanks. --Piero Montesacro 13:01, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your help. Meanwhile - and before being able to read your latest message sent to me - I had added a numer of new COM:DEL tags to other maps very similar to the one in subject, all of them featuring the same blatant geographic falsification:
  1. Image:Saumur dot.jpg
  2. Image:Nantes dot.png
  3. Image:Les Sables dot.JPG
  4. Image:Fontenay-le-Comte dot.png
  5. Image:Cholet dot.JPG
  6. Image:Bordeaux dot2.png

Interestingly, at least in the one case (Image:Bordeaux dot2.png), checking the history you can see that the first image posted - which was accurate - was later intentionally replaced with the bogus one. It seems that some French users are a bit clueless not to say careless much about map accuracy: very recently, as you can check here, one of them agreed with my remarks and fixed more than 100 images on Commons which were inaccurate in the same way of the ones I pointed out above. This is IMHO not an unimportant matter, because we, as Wikipedia, are servicing literally hundreds of bogus maps of France to the whole world. I believe that it could be the case to sensibilize the French Wikipedia about the problem, since in France there are even governamental institutions which do distribute similar maps, in spite of the HARD FACT that they are obviosly and blatantly INACCURATE and MISLEADING: for example, take the following image: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:France_departements.png As you can see, the latest version FEATURES a separation line indicating that the island of Corsica was displaced from its real position (actually, it would have been entirely outside in such map, if it was accurate) but if you check the previous versions, there was NO indication of the displacement performed. Furthermore, if you check the source of the map ([http://www.ign.fr/affiche_rubrique.asp?rbr_id=445&lng_id=FR) you discover that its distributor is the National Geographical Institute of France!!! Now, please, be so kind to check this ACTUAL satellite image of the region and see by yourself what they dared to do: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Frankrijk_satelliet.jpg and this other image as well: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Satellite_image_of_France_in_August_2002.jpg

here are more ACCURATE maps of France which do prove my point. Please don't esitate in contacting me again if you need any further information. More thanks, --Piero Montesacro 19:04, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, just a reminder: more than one week has passed and nothing seems to have happened. Please advice. Thanks, --Piero Montesacro 17:10, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, and thank you so much for your prompt removal of the first one of the images that I had candidated for their deletion. Is there any reason that prevents removing the other ones that I mentioned here? More Thanks --Piero Montesacro 14:45, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for bothering you again: just discovered another in this series: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:La_Roche_sur_Yon_dot2.png Could you be so kind to consider adding it to the others I listed earlier? THANKS!!! --Piero Montesacro 23:00, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Image:Map of Streams in Lycoming and Sullivan Counties Pennsylvania.png deletion[edit]

Thanks for deleting it - I changed the name because I realized I would have to eventually make a separate map for Sullivan County (there are two major streams/watersheds in it that are not clear in the deleted map). Since the new map showed strams and watersheds for Lycoming County, PA I changed the name to Image:Major Watersheds in Lycoming County Pennsylvania.PNG. A.Perfect.Beginner's Lots of Questions[edit]

Whilst being in troubles on my own talk page, I would like to collect answers there which I meanwhile might get e.g. here. Please "push" my questions to places like VP, HD or wherever by just marking then vp, he or whatever, mark by ?? what is not understandable or by "---" what you are not willing or able to answer. In such cases, I'd remove the question from here and put it there. Of course I'm glad about all I get, in case you have the time and like to answer here, but I'm somewhat afraid I might askt too many questions - in such case, please just tell me to STOP.

Would it be wise[edit]

to establish another User-Subpage of mine for that intended Collection, or shall I use the Talk page for that?

Definition of "Third Party"?[edit]

What I wanted to express by "Third party" is: anbody but the uploader and some obvious.owner.of.rights. I ask you as a native English speaker whether this term might be understood in such broad sense, thereby including eg. also some person photographed by me, who has to agree before uploading? I think "Duesis" understanding ot the term might be too »narrow«. So, I ask : Can third party mean what I tried to explain - yes-or-no, and in case of no, can you please possibly give me better or the correct words for it? —WolfgangW. 08:56, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

May we erase my questions from here,[edit]

as you answer them on my page anyways? I (imho) would just leave the heading, and I would just sign in to inform you that I have new attacks, on my page, which you are politely asked to look after? Or is there some reason that such would not be perfect? _T.P.B 13:26, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I start a dummie- or demoversion of "Beginners First Steps" on Commons:Erste Schritte which I discuss on Commons talk:First steps. Would you please have a look at it? I might need some protection for my idea, which seriously differs from acual First Steps by using several more little pages. As beeing in a flame war with (at least) one of the German admins, I'm afraid I might not be able to show my thing running before it would possibly be killed. TX, Wolfgang Annie IP 19:00, 10 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Raw translations, as done by now (should be sufficient for evaluating):

  1. "Main" First Steps-Page: User:Huitzlipochtli III./Annie IP's 1st
  2. Commons:Account anlegen (DE) (=Create Account) almost self-explaining, I think
  3. Commons:Upload file (English version)

Request about Chinese user[edit]

Hi. Could you do my a little favour? The User:Melop has uploaded Image:SH-2-196 Bauhinia championi.jpg. It would be really nice if someone could check zh:User:Melop just to see if he appears to be a trustworthy user and if there is a way to contact him about image licenses.

I've heard China has had some Wikipedia connectivity problem since October 2005 (government censorship). But maybe inactive users still respond to emails, perhaps?

Re: Image:thelimit.jpg[edit]

If on en: an image is uploaded and it's inmediately used to vandalize several pages by the uploader I will speedy it (common sense, since it's obvious the uploader doesn't plan to use it on articles). I don't know how things are done in common, so I went ahead and tagged it, maybe I did wrong. The commons admin that saw it could either delete the image or just remove the tag and follow whatever proper procedure is. Drini 00:32, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I will research about it, but I'm pretty sure there is no such copyright law in our country. We have a very light copyright law and it will hardly include coins images. But I will find out for sure and if they are not considered my work just because I scanned them, then I guess we can change the license, right? Or do I have to delete them? Thanks for your comments! --Murven 06:47, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The following links take you to the documents of our copyright laws. They do not seem to mention the coins or anything alike. But I will send them to a lawyer for consulting. I guess for the moment I'll change the license to PD.

--Murven 06:59, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ready, I changed them all to {{PD-ineligible}}. If the lawyer tells me I cannot use the images I will delete them. Thanks! --Murven 07:15, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant[edit]

Hi. I deleted only images orphaned in all wiki projects (cheched with check usage) and onl images with image:cross.jpg. I think that it isn't a problem for local projects, because the images wasn't usable because was only image:cross.jpg and no project uses the image that I delete. Latvian copyright[edit]

Hello Pfctdayelise,

I don't know whether you found my answer on my own talk page, regarding the deletion of a picture I uploaded in good faith but bad knowledge today.

I'm not familiar with this plethoria of rules and did so in good faith, assuming that these tags were equivalent. I reject your accusation of "bending the rule just because ..." but am sorry for wrongful doing. --—Gf1961 15:20, 9 March 2006 (UTC)

After that I checked a few pages and actually found the text of the Latvian copyright law in English [[3]]. I'm really a complete novice to such regulations. Could you please give me a hand and check Section 6,1, whether you would consider the use of that photo and others of similar sources as acceptable for commons and tell me, which license template would be the correct one to use. Thank you in advance, --—Gf1961 19:04, 9 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Seems a shame to delete such work. Why don't we just move it to Suggested category scheme for playing cards or some such, out of the Commons namespace? pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:12, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, it's a shame. A lot of work was spent on that, but it was all wasted. Anyway, feel free to remove the {{D}} if you like. But I think it should stay in the Commons namespace if it's kept at all. User:dbenbenn 08:37, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I stated quite explicity in the summary that I messaged the owner and she explicity licensed it under a free creative commons license. Please read the summary next time.--Fallout boy 08:44, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I messaged her and and got permission specifically to license it under a commercial attribution-sharealike license. As for why it says all rights reserved, either she hasn't updated its licensing information or can't individually license photos. --Fallout boy 08:50, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • As for the name credit, I didn't think that was a violation of the no derivs licensing since one of the CC licensing terms is to allow the author to select their attribution manner. But if it is, I'll double check w/ the owner to make sure she knows the exact licensing terms. I'm sorry if I sounded moody in my first reply, but based on the initial missing info tag I thought you may have not read the summary.--Fallout boy 08:59, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Angband.png[edit]

I'm not sure if you can follow the discussion on my page, please be patient with me.

I have tried answering the copyright question, to the best of my knowledge. Check it out on my discussion.

Mikelima 12:53, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your quick answer. I actually already tried asking the current maintainer - let's see how things proceed.

Actually, the problem is simply that Angband was borne in a period predating the open source / free software rationalization, and the original authors are hard to contact, by now. And while Angband has lots of variations, they are all based (at least in part) on the original code. So, bad luck.

If I were to just put a rendition of this (just made up "by hand") would it be ok?

Not that it makes lots of sense, I realize.

I have browsed the angband sites, and I discovered this:

the opensource situation

So at least the authors are aware of the problem.

speedy deletion[edit]

Can you please put a link to the correctly named image when requesting speedy deletion? eg Image:Star Trek Film S1 OF6.png. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 07:16, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Image:Star Trek Film S1 OF6.png was renamed as Image:Star Trek Film OF6.png. Films dont have seasons. OF7 OF8 OF9 and OF10 had a similar rename. I already reuploaded the image and renamed all referances to the old image interwiki. Yes, I did my homework.
If I were an admin I could clean up my mess more effectively and save you time but I am not entrusted with such access. Meanwhile I only ask you to trust me with the images I uploaded myself, especialy with rank insignias. It is very stressful to deal with 1000+ images, it is muc more stressfull if one screws up. It is likely I would forget to mention the exact title of the newer image as my errors often cost me hours of tedious work.
I understand any deletion on comons have interwiki results which is why admins need to be careful but I believe you would appriciate my position perhaps?
--Cool CatTalk|@ 03:13, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I hope you don't feel that I am being petty or singling you out because I wasn't, at all. And I wasn't meaning to criticise you, just seek more information. And this is especially not about your unsuccessful RfA. It's just my speedy deletion procedure. It doesn't matter what the image is or who requested it for deletion, I always check to make sure that the duplicate is in fact the same, because it's so easy to make a mistake and edit the wrong page or c&p the wrong thing or whatever. I leave similar messages on the talk pages of newbies. I leave similar messages on the talk pages of admins. We're all only human. Usually people put a link to the other image, or if they don't I can check in their Gallery and it's usually right next to the one requesting deletion. It's only because you have so many uploads that I couldn't check in this way. It is likely I would forget to mention the exact title of the newer image as my errors often cost me hours of tedious work. I am not sure what you mean by this, since I am trying to avoid errors too.
I do consider you a valuable and reliable member of the community - I wouldn't have asked you for the favour of translating for me if I didn't. Again I'm sorry if you got the wrong impression about the intention of my message here. pfctdayelise (translate?) 06:09, 16 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request[edit]

I requested deletion of the US-DeptOfHHS-Seal because I became uncertain as to whether it is public domain or not. I haven't found the source, and although it is a symbol of a US government agency, it doesn't, as far as I know, necessarily have to be public domain (unless produced by the US government). ---Marcus- 09:31, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please ban him permanently as soon as possible, he is reverting all deletion request added to his BS and copyvio articles. Maybe take a look at his IP user entry (look at contribution list) --Denniss 02:06, 20 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
