Orgullobot[edit]

I have replied ;)--Orgullomoore 23:53, 15 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, again. Replacing one image with another is super, super easy. I was involved in that whole thing when the national flags were converted to SVG (I was also just learning to program then). Just let me know (and spread the word) when an image is to be deleted, and I'll orphan it in less than a minute ;). And let me know when you want to trade a png for an svg (or introduce me to these "SVG people").
Regarding the javascript AfD helper, I don't know how good I am at Javascript but I can take a look. What I'm sure could be done is that the human user propose all the images he wants for deletion, and the bot would come around every...¿2 hours? and post the message to the uploader(s), if that's the tedious part. For me, the hard part would be implementing that link into the interface, but then again, I would have to take a look.--Orgullomoore 01:01, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The only way I can think of for other users to use it would be for me to send them a copy of it, which in itself would be a sure verification that he was a trustworthy admin. However, they would need the m:pywikipedia libraries and w:Python programming language.--Orgullomoore 06:24, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, great idea, good thinking! I think that is definitely possible. Remember, however, that the bot is not 100% effective. There are templates, especially in en:, that are even hard for humans to edit. It can usually get the rest, though, and I'm working on the stuff that it can't get.--Orgullomoore 01:41, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! Thanks by your explanations and counting to me. Certainly, this user is a normal contributor from Wikipedia in Catalan. I've seen the stuff uploaded by this user, and I've seen that the latest images are being correctly tagged. The first uploaded image from this user was on January 23th., so I'm pressuming good faith by now because perhaps this user can be a newbie who is learning still the rules on Commons about licensing. In spite of it, I'm going to check early uploads in order to ask him about the source of every image. I will inform you, so. Cheers!. --Joanot Martorell 11:58, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was my own creation and i made a mistake. I did load up the wrong file. there are no 38 stars in the canton, but 40. An there was never a officiell US-Flag with 40 stars, because in 1890 Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington joined the Union. So the next Flag had 43 Stars. On images and things[edit]

Hi!

Thank you for asking me to give some feedback on the recent changes to SVG file format on commons.

First of all, I was trying to find out which flag images we were using on nl: at the time the project started on commons. The way I did that was by categorizing the flags, so it was easy to see which flag images existed and which were redundant. Considering the number of both images and links to them on nl:, this was quite a big task.

For many flags there was more than one link to commons, and I tried to reduce that, so only the best flag images were linked from nl:.

Correct information[edit]

One of the things I did was checking via several web sites to see which images were correct. At the same time, the conversion process on commons was starting, and to my surprise I found out that the people involved in the project were not aware of all the things to watch for when checking a flag: colors, ratio, the most recent coats of arms, etc. All they really seemed to care about was the file format. In fact, I had to check the flags I already checked, again after they had been converted into SVG. Very annoying! After I put comments on the flags that were not according to specs, they were eventually replaced by the correct ones. I hate it when an encyclopedia gives incorrect or outdated information.

Quality[edit]

Another thing I noticed was the poor quality of some of the new images. I cannot understand why people are deleting good quality images that have a proper license, just to replace them with something of lesser quality. It really is a waste of capital.

Flag thumbnails[edit]

SVG is a superb format for scaling images, until you want to reduce the size of an image to a flag thumbnail. Rendering doesn't work well for very small flags, as you can see in the flags of Andorra, Spain, and Oman. They become ugly when scaled down. This, plus the fact that the proper flag ratio is of importance for the big flags, for the flag thumbnails we want them to be as little different in ratio as possible. In short: there is a need for flag thumbnails.

No communication at all[edit]

The whole project was never discussed on meta, where it should have been discussed first. All comments on the side effects and the problems were ignored, and the people involved on commons really misbehaved themselves. It seemed they were abusing commons to start a hobby project of their own, enjoying the "power" they had. I still think some of the admins involved should leave the project for this. Their attitide was the worst I've seen on a wiki project so far. On nl.wikipedia, I have had better discussions with trolls than with these guys.

No one outside commons asked to start a project like this, and if the project was discussed on the local wikipedias in a good way, there would have been help from there, e.g. from the local bot operators to clean up the links on the local wikis. This was an opportunity missed. Commons is not a project on its own - the files kept at commons are part of the "capital" of Wikipedia. Admins on commons are supposed to keep and improve the quality of that - not to run their own hobby projects.

Now that the COAs are being replaced, I hope this won't be the same story all over again.

speedies[edit]

Hi, thank you for your support. It is really appreciated :) I saw the uploads in recent changes by chance and decided to warn the user in the most polite way before he wasted more time. I also deleted the references in the Spanish wikipedia (the policy there is the same as here, about fair use) so they could be deleted safely.

Although I am more involved on the Spanish wikipedia, I will try to help as much as I can (lucky I don't need to use here my bad English ;)). I have seen that here there are not as much people working as in other wikiprojects, so think I could probably help adding some content and with missing categories.

See you,

Licensing - Creative Commons / Canada[edit]

Hi Pfctdayelise

I want to get the licensing thing right. On my blog I use "Attribution-ShareAlike 2.5 Canada" because I reside in Canada. I noticed on Wikimedia there wasnt a similar Canadian License. I think the template has a "Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 Canada"

My question is, does it matter where I reside in terms of licensing?

I'm quite happy to do as your help file says "When publishing your own work, it is recommended to put it under (at least) two licenses: the GFDL (aka GNU-FDL, the GNU Free Documentation License) and CC-by-sa-2.0 (Creative Commons License with attribution and share-alike requirement, version 2)." if that is valid procedure for outside the US.

Does that work for Wikimedia?

Thanks

Speedy deletion[edit]

Hi, I noticed you tagged a bunch of images from Category:Egyptian antiques by Rama as speedy deletes. As Rama is an administrator, they are able to delete their own images, so I am going to remove them from CAT:CSD and let Rama delete them when they want. If you want to discuss this, you can leave a note on my Talk page. Thanks, pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:17, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

Your policy proposal[edit]

Looks sane. Thank you very much for the effort :-)

In other news, I think what's mostly needed is more communications somehow. <scratches head> That can get pretty tricky. It's good to see people at least talking now, even if it is still in angry voices so far. :-)

problems with nl.wikipedia community and SVG images[edit]

I'm sorry, but I don't think I'm the right person to 'convince' the Dutch community that we're doing good work here. The more I read of the situation, the more I agree with the complainants on the Dutch Wikipedia. WikiCommons should be there for the Wikipedias; I get the feeling that some people here on commons think that it's the other way around. I'd be happy to convince the Dutch that it's a good idea to just replace their pictures and not listen to their complaints, but only if you convince me first. - Andre Engels 14:51, 22 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, there was a discussion on the Dutch wikipedia on whether this kind of things is allowed under Dutch law. It looked like it was not allowed, but currently it turned into a stalemate, while waiting for more legal experts. Hmmm, let's just keep it for the time being, then. nl:Overleg gebruiker:SanderSpek 12:27, 23 February 2006 (UTC)

Making legal contributions illegal :-([edit]

Hi,

I would like to bring the following to your attention:

As far as I know, GFDL implies the possibility to trace back the source of the data. What recently happened was that images that were converted into SVG, were subsequently deleted. Also references to source files on local wikipedias are useless once the source file has been deleted. This way, otherwise perfectly legal contributions are made illegal because they cannot comply with the GFDL license.

Am I right about this? Or is there something I forgot? I am not 100% sure, but this is the way I read the license.

Regards, Quistnix 14:14, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In deed, Im not sure which tag could be the right one. The picture is free (no limits concerning comercial use etc)- sole condition: It have to be shown regarding "Swabian Alb" topics. It would be a pity, if this is not enough, cause I'm sure the we will never get a better photo from the Hohenzollern. Gruß --Kookaburra

Ho I have question regarding [1]. Why is this subst: needed? I always thought that this is a remenant from old times that is still existing for compatibility and now you don't need it anymore in order to embedd a template somewhere. Arnomane 15:18, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

After the flags they've started with the coas[edit]

Hi,

Here you can find an example of how people are approaching the users on nl.wikipedia. I am very sad that some people cannot see what they don't want to see :-( - Quistnix 19:35, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It is not that we don't appreciate the good work of this user, but we have reasons to doubt certain changes. The images linked on the user page of Kamu were replaced, and that was not what we wanted. We were trying to make an inventory of all coas linked to, to find out (via the embassy pages) which ones have to be replaced, instead of simply copying them from a list on Commons. At least two were not correct - Quistnix 19:38, 27 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cool Cat[edit]

On the English Wikipedia, I am the most active of the three mentors officially appointed to Cool Cat. Our role is described here:

Basically we keep him out of trouble. He may be blocked from editing by any administrator if he acts disruptively, and we review any blocks to make sure they're fair, and we also have the power to forbid him to edit articles where he is disruptive.

Because of his past behavior, the English wikipedia's arbitration committee has forbidden him to perform any refactoring of talk pages. I had to warn him about such an effort recently, where he removed a straw poll from an article's talk page because he disapproved of some of the participants. He has had a difficult relationship with other editors on the subjects of Turkey, Armenia and the Kurds; currently he is very upset by the use of a category on English Wikipedia referring to Kurdestan, because he is strongly opposed to an independent Kurdish state. In the past he has also taken strong objection to western historians' portrayal of the role of the Turkish military in the Armenian Genocide, and it was this in part that led to the mentorship system.

His behavior is not usually problematic, and he is highly respected for the work he has done, especially in fighting vandalism. But I cannot be confident that he would not prove a problem for Commons if he had sysop powers, and yes, the incident with anthere was worrying. --|Tony Sidaway 13:50, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the incident with anthere here is my defense:

I merely tried to make meta a less english only cabal. I tried to convince communities for a soft redirect, some communities agreed, some didn't. No good deed goes unpunnished I guess...

Unlike Rob Church's claim I did not order anyone around. I did my best to convince them to "move" the page to commons. At the very worst I had 2 edits per language wiki (IIRC).

I am not proud with my interaction with Anthere, however a board member steping in and threatening to block me without hearing my story (basicaly treating me as if I were a malicious user) is less than perfect behaviour by Anthere. It is a nasty incident all parties made mistakes.

Unless I am recieveing threats (a very poor way to reach me) I am a nice guy even when under presure. I am not "abusive" as Rob Church puts it.

I hence only ask you to reconsider your oppose vote based on my defense. Thanks. --Cool CatTalk|@ 22:58, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I also would like to note my counter vandalism effort is not limited to en, I work with italian, polish spanish and dutch wikipedias closely. Such comunities whatch vandalism through my bot. --Cool CatTalk|@ 23:36, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

re: your RFA[edit]

Hi Cool Cat. For the thing with anthere, I'm sure you meant well, but forcing a project in any direction is not our place. It's always their choice and when they're ready to make a change, they will.

In general I don't believe vandalism is a huge problem at Commons. The biggest problems that need tackling, in my opinion, are images with unfree, inaccurate or incomplete licenses, orphan images (not in any category and not on any gallery page) and technical multilinguality issues. In fact with the Commons:Tools, any person at all can help out with these. Tagging images as incomplete license, notifying the uploader, giving images categories... These are the real "grunt work" which is rarely noticed or appreciated but sorely needed. The big admin tool at Commons is of course the ability to delete images. But because images can't be undeleted, a deleted image is gone forever and you need to be very certain an image should be deleted. Otherwise it could cause a lot of resentment especially among local project users, who will say again, "Why should we trust the Commons?". So I think admins need a very conservative attitude towards image deletion, which I don't feel that you have. So, I will keep my vote oppose. This doesn't mean that your work is not valued, or that your future work is not valuable. Cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 01:26, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You see I process the RC feed, I can adjust my bot for that. Hmmm... How about a bot detecting images uploaded without being tagged? --Cool CatTalk|@ 12:18, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It could be useful, maybe in combination with Special:Newimages somehow? But two things, one is that some people prefer to upload the image first, then edit it to put in the license. the other is that images being uploaded with the wrong license is a bigger problem... and I don't see any bot fixing that. See how you go. pfctdayelise (translate?) 12:56, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The bot only points to problem candidates. Doesnt mean its perfect. :) --Cool CatTalk|@ 00:35, 3 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
