First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Warnings[edit]

March 2007[edit]

Image:Paul Wolfowitz 2006.jpg

Image deletion warning Image:Paul Wolfowitz 2006.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.
In all cases, please do not take the deletion request personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

July 2007[edit]

Please use a proper Edit Summary.
When editing a page on Commons there is a small field labeled "Edit Summary" or "Summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:

The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.

Filling in the Edit Summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the Edit Summary field. If you are adding a section, please do not just keep the previous section's name in the Edit Summary field - please fill in your new section's name instead. Thank you.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 10:55, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just look at your contributions page, it's littered with edits for which each has no summary.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 20:57, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brolga = Emu?[edit]

images from USDA[edit]

Hi!

I see you are uploading images from USDA. Nice but...

You are uploading small versions while on their page there is possibility to download high resolution versions, so please upload the large versions instead!

Deletion requests[edit]

Please take care to follow the correct procedure when requesting the deletion of contents. Deletion requests are not to be added directly to the current days subpage, as you did to Commons:Deletion requests/2007/02/14 with several deletion requests today. (I have now fixed those entries.) Instead, each deletion request should have its own subpage. (It is also possible to combine multiple deletion requests in one subpage through some extra work, but they should still appear on a subpage specific to the deletion request, and not in the date subpage.)

I know the procedure on COM:DEL is complicated, and getting it wrong is understandable, but please be patient in following the instructions, as not doing so causes extra work for others. Personally, I find it easiest to simply add the {{Delete}} tag to the content I wish to nominate for deletion first and then follow the step-by-step instructions in the template, rather than going to COM:DEL and following the instructions there.

I revertet your edit, because it is not a duplicate or a scaled down version but only a part of the original picture. Kersti 08:34, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

exploration maps[edit]

thats a shame about those as a lot of work had been put into making them. I have saved them to my computer and will see about remaking. In the meantime I have found some project gutenberg exploration maps that can replace some of the ones on wiki. --Astrokey44 09:58, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Cayley illustrations copyvio[edit]

Seems you're right about these. They actually are public domain in Australia - I just didn't think it was possible for them still being copyright in the US.. Eug 04:26, 5 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

File:Lake Superior North Shore.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Robert W. Holley image[edit]

Hi, PDA. I am currently working on the Elizabeth Beach Keller page at Wikipedia. She is part of Robert W. Holley's research team, which used this image you uploaded. Do you have information as to who were those with him in that photo or if Keller was included? Thank you. Best regards, Darwin Naz (talk) 22:42, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
