Hi! Are you from Tanzania? It's really great! :) So do you have got Photoshop or simillar program (others using GIMP)? Your photo is near good for QI, but the overexposed can be improved. It's not on the background. It's on the flower, overexpose means the very bright parts on the white flower. If you have a program try find a tool for highlighted areas. Write if you need more help! Nice illusion. I know how quickly "change clockwise/anti-clockwise" thinking. Look only at the left foot's shadow (this left foot on this animation) :) or only at the left foot. clockwise - anti-clockwise - clockwise - anti-clockwise. Hajj images[edit]

Your images of the Hajj -- those are really something. Thanks for making them available. My religion teacher had found a similar image of this that was in a book and held it up for us to see. I read the words that described it and I had a friend who took this journey and described it to me -- neither of those words were as good as the pictures though.

If I remember correctly, even my non-religious friends from the Middle East had a large amount of respect for the people who experienced this Hajj.

Re:Turtle[edit]

I had the turtle walking over a white piece of paper when I took the picture (it was surprisingly fast for a turtle). I then used the levels tool in Photoshop to brighten the paper and erased all traces of the concrete. I can upload the original photo if you want. Valued images test review phase has ended[edit]

Dear Muhammad,

Thank you for participating in the development of the Valued images project by test nominating one or more candidates. We have used the input from the test reviews to fine-tune the guidelines, process and templates used, hereby hopefully improving the setup.

Even though I was away from the keyboard when it happened and slept through it, your nomination of the image of the girl which if the two review systems are like looking at the turning of a page, works perfectly right to left or left to right -- that is a lot of words, but it was not lost on me.

I spent a few years with a web site that had in its url an 'unsafe' tagged word and a commercial world which gets an advantage to make that word continue to be unsafe in addition to these last few years where (I think) technology has been abusive to me, personally. There is a challenge to keep systems so that it is safe for children and additionally, older children and adults alike make agreements on new symbolism and words. Then, different cultures as well. I was constantly faced with the challenge to make a web site whose contents were not age discriminating and this is not a self praise thing to my success or an admission to my failure it is a simple statement about the challenge.

The first time I did that was simply in QIC, I was not enjoying my perception of what was going on and some body nominated an image in QIC and also in FPC and I nominated an image of a cat looking into a front loading clothes drying machine to QIC. I can remember the nomination now but not the reason. The assigning of animal images to people is bothersome to me (a good place to mention that here and now), it is fuzzy and not often with the same perception from culture to culture.

In Michigan, where I grew up, the convenience stores were owned by Arabs. I like some stereotypes. Every stereotype has qualities and with an understanding that they don't always work it is also encompasses a little pride in where people come from. Before I left my home, I yelled at a couple of my favorites there at the store which was closest to where I lived. Here is the reason I yelled, they were eating food from home and it was the good food that I had encountered while in the international dormatory at the university. I asked "How much for the food?" in a kind of loud and demanding voice and then expressed my disappointment when they refused to establish a price for the transaction. It is a area of merchants?

Political correctness defies being proud of where people came from. The melting pot is kind of neat but a useless unproud slurry is kind of not so.

Anyways, the photograph of the little girl is very nice. The reviews so far are accurate, but the nomination was not lost on me.

Panoramas tips[edit]

Hi Muhammad,

Thanks for your comment. Here are the points I am very careful about when shooting panoramas :

Horizon
if you use a tripod perfectly set (head must be horizontal and rotation axis must be vertical), you'll have no trouble in fixing the horizon. This is useful when a scenery doesn't have an obvious horizon line, like your current nomination on FPC.
Exposure
more difficult on a multi pictures panorama. First, you have to make sure exposure is consistent on all your picture, second you have to choose carefully which area you are setting exposure from. I usually try to spot a moderately lit area. If you have dark and brights area, give priority to the dark. it's easier to fix than blownout parts.
DOF
I usually choose f/8.0 (deep enough for most case).
focus
I usually choose the farthest point (but if you have something of interest closer to you, this doesn't apply !)

Don't forget to get correct setting first, and then freeze them by switching to manual mode :)

the FPC Pano[edit]

I have been watching that vote, I have been curious how it goes. It is a beautiful pano. It really is. It is kind of dark in the thumbnail though. I understand that the area is naturally very light and very dark. I was glad to see it go into QI. When I looked this morning, it would need more than my one vote to get accepted (FPC needs two positive votes for every negative vote).

The comment(s) about the photograph being a part of the world which is not represented here photographically very much is where my ideas are. I have been sorting through the images of this whole world....

I saw something interesting the first time I left my continent and saw a different part of the world with people from other parts of the world. We went to Norway. Norway actually felt to me more like home due to its location on the planet than it does where I am now which is a much more mild part of my country -- I come from northern parts of the United States, so the weather and the plants and even the mindset of the Norwegian people seemed familiar to me.

When comparing the photographs of this event that I took with the photographs that were taken by a Czech and an Estonian, in particular some photographs we took from the same boat trip really stood out. The Europeans were excited to see the white fiberglass boats in the scenery and all of their photographs that had boats in them had these kinds of boats. In my home, there are plenty of boats like that so my photographs were all of the old and well-maintained wooden boats which are of different colors. I suspect that our touring of the country was similar to the photographs. That the Europeans went to see the new things that the Norwegians had made recently and the Americans possibly went to see the things that remained that looked like old Europe. While in Bergen, it was difficult to get away from the tourist area by the coast, but it was really beautiful as well.

The media here in the United States about different parts of the world is a problem and is interesting also. When I first learned that it snowed in Iran, my brain stopped working for a maybe a few seconds -- at least that is what it felt like. That part of the world, the desert areas seem to be photographed and written about and well represented. My brain stopped when it encountered this idea that there were areas there that snowed -- it had on a wrong track, perhaps? so the perception of it stopping was maybe that a lot of ideas were being reshuffled and re-examined. I had a similar experience about 15 to 20 years later when I learned that it snowed in Madrid. So much that I do not know and the media (movies, television and books) are actually somewhat responsible for how much I don't know.

So, here it is. I am sorry, I am not going to vote in FPC for your image. It is too dark for the thumbnail which is what probably most people see (I rarely look at the full size version of the images which are on the main pages; I don't know how different I am from others this way). To have an image from that area which is lush and beautiful and not of indigenous suffering people or of well, whatever the hell most of the images from that continent are is the kind of valuable that getting votes for cannot ever express.

Also, my roomate from Yemen -- never saw snow before! That was another something. A smaller experience which was the same kind of was a person I met who had grown up in Southern California and had moved more north who had experienced one ice storm. The beauty of these things cannot be represented in a photograph. Einstein was correct about everyone being in the center of their own little version of the universe; I really really believe this and have experienced much evidence of it.

It should be okay to not have the image Featured? The user Muhammad Mahdi Karim has become a well known commons character to me. I wrote elsewhere about filling in the details before and after images that I look at -- this really happened to me with your hadj photograph. I had a friend who was nicknamed "Hadji" for taking that journey. I later bastardized the word in such an american way to talk about going to one of the retail locations of one of my favorite catalogs. If I actually believed in a wrath of god, I might have problems with that, eh? Personal stuff -- I had a great falafal yesterday and interestingly enough, the special included a banana shake which was artificial banana flavor but I really like artificial banana flavor! I took some "falafal balls" to go; they are really spicy and eh, the rocks? It is like your photograph and to get to the restaurant, it was not unlike passing the waterfall (there are many irrigated lawns in the area). If an image could be like a meal I had, the beauty was similar. I have no idea if I know what real falafal is or not, but I know what I like. Here is something else that is on my mind a lot. There is a species of fish that is being sold here. I read where the fish was developed to be farmed in desert conditions. It was something I read a long time ago (5 or 6 years) and I don't eat this fish because I think that the real problems in the desert areas for the people who live there is not the oil but the water. Oh, the oil makes these areas interesting for other people -- but the real problems are about water? I like the idea of keeping the places where the fish are and were in good shape so that they flourish there. I like this food that fed people before technology started to help. I don't need a handmade falafal, if a machine mixed the ingredients and made the little balls of goodness that is fine -- it is the recipe that is so good. I have some doubts about the ethnic reality of "mideastern" cocktail sauce that comes with it, but it tastes fine together and this is California where, I think, the only thing they have that wasn't imported (even from within their parent country) is avocados.
There is perhaps, a lack of real life for me lately which makes a little thing like getting this good food really stand out. I had a lot of life before this so it hasn't been so bad to endure. My FPC that should have been accepted -- it was not even to be featured, it was to replace a lesser quality version. The failing of the votes has nothing to do with the fact that it is a superior image. I think that mine could be replaced also, I do not think it is the best or final version either. I would not make a negative vote for your image. If it succeeds, that is fine by me, it is a great image both in the big world and in my small world. The voting at FPC is interesting with the two to one.

Panorama again[edit]

Hi Muhammad,

I was reading my talk page (I'm sick today, couldn't go to work) and saw again your question, which I now think I didn't answer correctly. To get a blue sky, you have to be careful with the.. weather :) Looks easy uh ? Actually, I remember I did the same mistakes so...

You have to make sure the subject is well lit and that it's brighter than the sky. This is very important. One mistake I made before is to only look for a blue sky. Sometime, you see a blue sky, but your subject is in a shadow cast by a cloud. That's typically when you'll end up with an overexposed sky. Cloudy skies can give nice and dramatic atmosphere if your subject is lit by a sun ray then, like here

Sometimes, when wind hasn't been here for long, or because of pollution etc. you have dirty atmosphere, and there's not much you can do... I found out that sky was clearer after rain (maybe I'm wrong ?).

two solutions of last resort : getting a polarizer filter might help in certain conditions (but I don't recommend using it for large FOV panoramas). You can also postprocess your pictures and work selectively on the sky. Though I sometimes do this, I don't think this last solution can do miracles. You have to be careful with edges or you'll end up with something like this.

Hi, i just came across this answer of Benh and want to add something. I have also some hints for you. Daytime and season play a big role for getting good landscape pictures (inluding the sky). Best season is spring and autum because you have low smog and view is clearer and the colours are more vivid. Best daytime is the early morning or the late afternoon, because the sun stands lower and the shadows are longer and the result of this is a better contrast.
