First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Overwritting existing images[edit]

In short - please do not do that. Commons is not censored and that is a valid image. If you look at the talk page you will see that it has been through a deletion request in the past and survived.

In the end such action is wrong. If you find an image that you believe should not be on Commons than making a deletion request regarding it is the correct action. Thanks --Herby talk thyme 06:58, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I really thought that I was replacing it with a more descriptive image of the same thing. I might have over thought the situation though. Thank you for explaining it to me; I will spend some time perhaps unthinking this. -- \mathbf{C} 21:51, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

FPC[edit]

You recently opposed my FPC for an unclear reason. If you have legitimate reasons, basing yourself on the guidelines, please state so. However, if your vote is not serious, please consider removing your vote. --S23678 (talk) 23:31, 23 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The vote only becomes serious if there are enough similar votes to make the nomination fail. Use of the word 'serious' is somewhat fuzzy in its meaning here. -- \mathbf{C} 04:59, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You still didn't explained the reason why you opposed my picture. Please do so on the voting page. I also have difficulty understanding your last comment; are you saying you opposed just because, in your opinion, your vote will not make a difference in the final decision? If that's the case, understand that I'm using this vote to make a point that full resolution images are better than downsampled ones, and your vote destroys the unanimous series of "support" I need to make it valid. If you still insist on opposing my image, I suggest you do it for valid reasons (as of now, I don't consider your reason valid), and oppose the downsampled version (the reason being that full resolutions versions are always better than downsampled ones), while removing your vote on the full resolution one or supporting it. --S23678 (talk) 11:52, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I saw you changed your vote before I posted my last comment. Thanks for doing so, but I'll remind you that your statement is still unclear as the 2 pictures are identical except for their size. Also, you should not modify your comments like that, but strike the ones that are no longer valid, while doing so by being connected with your account on commons. --S23678 (talk) 11:59, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wikimedia log in is inconsistent. Some days, my login lasts for minutes (if I don't preview an edit or look at a page, the login is lost -- maybe 30 minutes) and other days it lasts for as long as the browser lasts which is sometimes for days. I really think that the consistency should start at the server -- don't you? -- \mathbf{C} 12:17, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reason for your vote is still unvalid. --S23678 (talk) 13:12, 24 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You know what? You can kiss my ass. -- \mathbf{C} 22:50, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please be civil[edit]

It seems to me that you are acting in an uncivil manner. Please remain civil and don't resort to making personal attacks or instigate edit wars. --Túrelio (talk) 22:57, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In my life, this phrase has never been used in a negative way. "Be sensitive to different cultures" <-- is there a template that suggests this for the international image serving wiki? -- \mathbf{C} 23:04, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Be sensitive to different cultures" goes both ways. By the way, according to Wiktionary kiss my ass is at least a vulgarity. To your question: no I am not aware of, at least not on Commons:Message templates. --Túrelio (talk) 23:16, 4 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
File:Human penis both flaccid and erect.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
