Complaint about rollback

Please do not misuse the rollback tool like you did here, next time it will be removed. Please discuss the changes on Wiki, discussing it off wiki isn't going to work with a dispute like this. Bidgee (talk) 23:34, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Um, you are horribly mistaken. POTY is operated by a committee and disputes are not resolved like others on Commons. The committee is discussing the changes right now; if you would like to observe they are in public on IRC. Also edits to committee pages are not decided by community process so close to the beginning and they will be frozen soon. Mono 23:47, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

File:Twitter Sticker Icon.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Commons Picture of the Year 2012

Hello Mono,

I don't understand, who I can to upload a photo, without problems ? How ? Please help me.

It is unacceptable for a Commitee member, not less an administrator of a contest, to stifle and then deliberately reduce the visibility of constructive critical commentary. The fact that the Committee disagrees with portions of said commentary and plans to take no respective action is irrelevant. I urge you to stop and reflect for a moment on what you're doing here.   — C M B J   01:38, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

We are not redoing 2012 voting. The discussion is taking up a ton of space on the talk page; there are two sections that you started and the one contains three galleries with enormous pictures. Making these pictures bigger does not prove your point and is annoying. It is completely unhelpful to say you don't like the results; frankly, I'm tired of it as that is the point of POTY.
However, I believe that a discussion about the POTY process is important. I believe that some of the most interesting and intriguing images in Round 1 were overlooked by the popular vote. One idea for improving this is having expert judges participate in the contest. (I am not an administrator, as well.) Mono 02:12, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Hello Mono,

I don't understand, who I can to upload a photo, without problems ? How ? Please help me.--Albanianp (talk) 16:55, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi, the image must be freely licensed to be uploaded to Commons. On Flickr, at the top it says 'all rights reserved.' We can't have images that are copyrighted on Commons. Unfortunately it must be deleted unless you get permission from the person who took the photo. Mono 17:01, 18 February 2013 (UTC)

Missing permission

Hello, you tagged File:Brickimedia.svg as requiring the permission of the author... even though it was uploaded by the author. Why? Ajraddatz (talk) 18:33, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

It appears to be a copyrighted logo, although not blatant enough to warrant a {{Copyvio}} tag. While asserted as own work, it seemed strange as logos are rarely own work. Note: the user also had a history of uploading images with copyright problems. Mono 18:37, 19 February 2013 (UTC)
The user uploaded that logo at my request, and it is his own work (and I thank him for that). Could you revert your addition of the tag, rather than wasting his time sending emails and then wasting OTRS's time responding to it? Thanks, Ajraddatz (talk) 18:59, 19 February 2013 (UTC)

Discussion notice

For records and page watchers: another user started a discussion about some edits to the community portal at Commons on Meta. I've since rephrased my notice on this page to be simpler for non-native English speakers so this shouldn't occur again. Mono 05:16, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

Commons:Community Portal

Hi! Why was this? This started a campaign to redesign? I support this idea, but where is it being discussed? I'm sorry, but I do revert these last 4 changes. Maybe start process for migrate of all translated pages to single-designed layout template?--Kaganer (talk) 14:04, 7 March 2013 (UTC)

In general, borders are not controversial. (I also fixed paragraph spacing and made the images a little smaller). However, we can discuss them if needed; I just assumed most people wouldn't care. But I would like to launch a major retool of our welcome material to be more useful, action-oriented and concise. Ideas & comments always welcome. Cheers,  ono  19:37, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
I support, strongly support. Simply this - intermediate - version looked pretty clumsy. Maybe create test version of new design in some testspace (e.g., /test subpage)? But not in landing page directly... Or start small "redesign project"? Community contest?--Kaganer (talk) 20:29, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
And also one issue: maybe, in parallel, start migration these pages into new mw:Extension:Translate mechanism? With single designed layout and "cleaned" translatable content? --Kaganer (talk) 20:33, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
Earlier, four multilanguage pages was designed synchronously: Community Portal, Main Page, Welcome and Template:Welcome. Perhaps they should be change the synchronously? --Kaganer (talk) 20:40, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
AFAIK, translation is a mess on Commons (during POTY we hacked something together). I think a little refresh is good, ENWP shouldn't completely pass us by.  ono  01:27, 8 March 2013 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Mono, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and its subpages), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care. Have a look at the list of Gadgets (on the bottom there are the ones specifically for admins – however, for example the UserMessages are very helpful too).

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons webchat on irc.libera.chat. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators: #wikimedia-commons-admin webchat.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading. You can find the admin backlog overview at COM:AB.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Why did you deleted the YA Book cover ? GhiathArodaki (talk) 20:12, 17 March 2013 (UTC)

Did you make the book cover wholly own your own? If not, you don't own the copyright and you can't upload it to Commons. That is why I deleted it. You can read more about copyright violations at this page. Mono 20:15, 17 March 2013 (UTC)
It's for my grandfather and he gave it to the family , and it was given to me,and gave me the copyright also.GhiathArodaki (talk) 11:00, 18 March 2013 (UTC)
The book cover is copyrighted by the publisher of the book, not who owns the book. Please read Commons:Image_casebook#Book_covers. If you own the copyright of the actual design on the front of the book, then you may file a OTRS request. However, this is very unlikely and you would have to provide some sort of documentation. Hope this helps, Mono 00:14, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
The book copyright is different from country to country , in our country , the copyrighter is the ownerGhiathArodaki (talk) 12:49, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
While that's unlikely, Wikimedia Commons is hosted in the United States and must follow US copyright laws. Please read our copyright policy, which says "Wikimedia Commons only accepts media that are explicitly freely licensed, or that are in the public domain in at least the United States and in the source country of the work." Mono 15:39, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

But anyway , The owners now handle the copyright from the company.GhiathArodaki (talk) 16:55, 19 March 2013 (UTC)

I'm sorry, are you asking me a question? I need you to be a little bit more clear and specific so I can address your concerns. Thanks, Mono 20:24, 19 March 2013 (UTC)
I Meant , The company gave the copyright to the owner , that is why he holds the copyright , and that is why in our countries the owner is the holder of the copyright.GhiathArodaki (talk) 13:07, 20 March 2013 (UTC)

"Uncontroversial" image changes

Hi! I noticed that you've recently changed the images used in several fully protected templates, claiming that the changes were uncontroversial. Unfortunately, you've inadvertently turned several templates, ironically including {{Copyvio}} and {{Copyvionote}}, into copyright violations (which is a rather controversial thing to do). You see, unlike File:Dialog-warning.svg and File:Copyright-problem.svg, File:Commons-emblem-speedy.svg and File:Commons-emblem-no-copyright.svg are not in the public domain. Linking to the file description page is legally required to comply with their licensing terms. Please, either revert your changes or remove the empty link= parameter. LX (talk, contribs) 09:45, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

I've reverted the changes, thanks for reminding me of that. I don't think those images will work because of that, as not using the link= parameter often encourages people to vandalize the file description page. I'll start a discussion. Cheers, —Mono 15:30, 30 March 2013 (UTC)

POTD for Mother's Day?

Hi, I was wondering if I could change the POTD for 12-May-2013 (mother's day) to a photograph of mine that has a mother/child of the endangered black rhinoceros in it. It was suggested in FPC that this picture could be good for mother's day, but the slot's already been taken by one of User:Poco a poco's photographs that you added as POTD for 12th May. I've already asked User:Poco a poco and he's OK with changing of the picture for Mother's day. Thanks. :) -- ~y (talk) 18:41, 17 April 2013 (UTC)

Custom styles on log in / create account

Account creation isn't quite ready yet, but you can start testing the new login design now. :) I'll do a Village Pump post etc., but beforehand, it's probably time to remove the custom Vector.css styles from login at least, since they're conflicting with the CSS for the new version. Hello, thank you for assisting with translation administration. I've replaced the old languages bar with the correct one and I see that most languages are gone. This is not the correct way to do it: you must first move all translations to language subpages, then mark for translation, and finally import all old translations to the new system. Otherwise, the links are all mixed and even when all translations are moved the histories are scattered. You now have to remove all translation tags, remove the page from translation, and follow the process as above. Regards, Nemo 07:00, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Hello, I see you're now moving translation pages, but still overwriting all translations. [2] What's the purpose? Please also fix the other page first. Thanks, Nemo 12:58, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
I didn't overwrite them, the bot did that automatically. It sensed that the new page was not the old page and didn't import them. Both pages have changed format lots of times and I'm not even sure importing the old stuff will work - some of it doesn't seem accurate any more.

If your pages follow the language code subpages naming convention, they will be replaced with the source text after marking the source page for translation, but you'll still be able to access translations from history.

This is manual work, where you have to open the old translation page and copy and paste translations from there to correct translation units in the new system using the translation interface. For this you need to roughly know which part of the translation matches which part of the old text (and hope they match)

(Meta's guide
So this behavior is normal, but I do understand the dilemma - I too would like to minimize work for translators. I'm not sure what would be best for translated pages that haven't seen updates in years. —Mono 16:09, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
I'm not sure what you mean with that quotation... I'm one of the main authors of that help page. There's no dilemma: «you have to open the old translation page and copy and paste translations from there to correct translation units in the new system», as you quoted. Please do it or refrain from doing partial jobs. --Nemo 17:01, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
The dilemma is that the translations don't match up. The English version has been updated time and time again, so there is no 'matching' that will occur - only copy and pasting stuff where it probably doesn't fit. Should I do that? —Mono 17:13, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
Yes, if nothing else is possible. !!FUZZY!! can mark translations needing an update. Is translation of that page even possible at all? It's composed mostly of links to pages which may exist or not in the other languages. You should know what translation is for, as you enabled it... --Nemo 18:10, 23 May 2013 (UTC)
  • I've stopped translation for these pages until there's a clear plan and method in place across Commons for migrating outdated translations. It's too big of a mess for me to handle and this problem is present in numerous places that should be translated. —Mono 02:02, 24 May 2013 (UTC)
The method is what I said above. There won't be another, nobody is working on one and Translate devs think it impossible. --Nemo 07:07, 24 May 2013 (UTC) P.s.: This is not enough, it won't revert edits on the translation pages. You probably want to open each of them and rollback FuzzyBot. I'm going to leave some instructions on how to properly mark that page next time.

translate tool / Main Page

Hello Mono :-), Thank you for your hard work on the Main Page. But i disagree, please discuss first. I think the tool is unsuitable for the page. Greetings--Steinsplitter (talk) 09:52, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

I also think, as long as we have only limited space at the main page, adding local project information (like a photo rally in the Netherlands) to all the main pages wouldn't be good. Also, let's work on your new version of the main page. I really like the design. (There was a VP discussion, I know, but can you give me a link to it?) Thanks. I will be available in IRC today. -- Rillke(q?) 10:09, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Welcome, dear translation administrator!

Hi Mono, thanks for your application for translation administrator. Your request was closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of translation administrators.

Please take a moment to read our help page before marking pages for translation.

For existing translations

Make sure to move all existing translations to language subpages (/fr, /de, etc.). Pages with existing translations need to have them manually copied to the new system or some process to be created for it. Translation administrators must ensure existing translations don't get lost or hidden, or translators will be unhappy and we'll lose them.

Before it slips off your to do list, would you please add the "Today in Images" link back in? There are more than 365 pages that got hits because of that link. See {{Months and days of the year}}. Many thanks. Evrik (talk) 22:14, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

I added it, but I'd like to see a better implementation - perhaps a calendar thing or something. I'll think about it. —Mono 17:52, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. Perhaps a line or a bar to set it apart from the rest of the text? A calendar feature might be multilingual and look like this File:Kartka_1_stycznia_2007.jpg Evrik (talk) 15:14, 13 June 2013 (UTC)

Greetings,

About the file in the title, I already referenced the license of the file in the link right at the beginning of the "license" section. Isn't that enough? -- Mr.TAMER.Shlash (talk) 18:28, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Unfortunately, that's not a license - Commons requires that all our files are freely licensed. We have license templates that correspond to standard copyright releases by people/organizations. The most common one is the Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 (CC-BY-SA 3.0), which can be used on a page by adding {{Cc-by-sa-3.0}} in the license section (the upload wizard does this automatically).
Stack Exchange hasn't released their logo under this license; the link you provided does not establish this. Usually, the logo couldn't be included on Commons; instead, you would have to upload it on the Wikipedia you want to use it in and then claim fair use. Commons does not allow fair use.
However, the image can stay on Commons because it consists of only simple shapes. In the US, simple shapes are not eligible for copyright. I've tagged it with {{PD-textlogo}} in the license section to denote this. If you have any questions about this or licensing in general, do let me know.

That is an improper use of {{helpme}} - you have been helped, writing a script is a serious undertaking, and the helpme template is not the proper venue to request this. —Mono 19:12, 16 November 2013 (UTC)

There is no good reason why a {{helpme}} tag should stay on a page longer than 3 days. Obviously, no one can or is willing to help you - I would if I had time or knew how. But that hasn't happened for 4+ months and it's not going to any time soon. Just saying. —Mono 18:29, 18 November 2013 (UTC)

WLM 2013 thanks

Hi. I understand, why such thanks were placed on the discussions of all the uploaders. I for myself don't like such atomatic "thanks", but this is not the Problem. My problem is: I feel a bit strange, if someone writes me on my discussion a text like For more information about Wikimedia Commons, please visit our welcome page. Fine. But I'm a Commons admin with more than 70.000 edits. I don't know, should I laugh or should I get frustrated. How I should feel respected? Marcus Cyron (talk) 13:15, 25 November 2013 (UTC)

You should laugh - I completely understand how that feels. I didn't even think to filter new contributors out from more experienced ones...so everyone got the same automated message. Anyway, the goal was to introduce people who just stopped by for WLM to keep contributing and that's why the welcome page was linked. —Mono 17:57, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear Mono/Archives,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

Re:Hi

Hi Beria, I wanted to remind you that reverting edits that are not vandalism without an edit summary is unacceptable, as you did here. I'd also like to point out that this is remarkably ugly. While I don't oppose changes to the header, it's clear they need to be discussed before you make them. Cheers, —Mono 16:57, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Glad to see you continue as delicate, calm and polite as before, which was the 1st reason I always loved dealing with you. So let's get this straight: You dont like THIS YEAR'S template, and therefore you wanna make me change to the one from LAST YEAR? (which YOU changed, unadvertised, AFTER the contest end). That is the point you trying to make here? Béria Lima msg 17:16, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
Hi Beria. We can continue this discussion here, since you seem to have moved it to this page. I've added my original comment before for context. In response to your point, I understand that you didn't care for some of my changes in the past. Previously, you have asked me to discuss and gather consensus before making layout or design changes to POTY templates.
Rather than simply reverting your changes, I believe we can have a productive discussion about your changes and I fully expect you to work within the same guidelines you have previously expressed on this matter. As I said, I do not oppose changes to header, although I don't particularly like the changes you've made so far. I'd be happy to explain my position further. However, before that point, we need to establish that changes need to be discussed before they are made, regardless of who is making the changes.
Please let me know whether you are willing to discuss your changes before you make them, as you have asked me to do in the past. —Mono 17:28, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
Let's again make stuff clear here: I didn't "change" anything, I created this year template. What was based on is irrelevant, so we can't discuss "my changes" because there is no other version. Second, if you trying to make the template look like what you made of last year's, forget it, isn't going to happen. I know you hate gradients and anything that isn't solid colour over white background, but some people (the 3 I did ask about this year's template and I) liked. I'm willing to compromise in the share part (because really, who uses anything other that FB and Twitter?) and maybe in the type of font but that is as far as changes will go in this template. Can you live with that? Béria Lima msg 17:35, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes, that's OK. I think we should consider refining the design a bit more, but first I want to propose that we consider rethinking the navigation a bit. With last year's collection of pages, we had a lot of duplication of function.
  • We had both a 'Voter eligibility page' and a 'Rules' page. These could be combined and that would make updating & translation much easier and reduce confusion. Besides, eligibility is checked by the script now.
  • We had no clear help function - people could go to either a talk page which was understaffed or read the FAQ. A simple combined help page would make everything easier.
  • Translations were tedious and time-consuming. Commons now has the translation extension, which has its quirks. But it's a better experience for translators and we should definitely consider migrating over to that. If nothing else, we should use the translations from last year for this year with the old system.

My suggestion is we have a simpler page structure that goes something like this:

  • Introduction/Welcome/About the contest
  • Rules
  • Vote (when needed)
  • Results (when needed)
  • Help

Of course, there would still be behind the scenes pages and other ones as we need them. I think we should present people with the most timely and relevant information possible. This means showing people different functionality, depending on whether the contest has started, is in progress, or has ended. Doing this would mean restructuring the navigation somewhat, but I think it would help everyone involved. —Mono 19:19, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

I like the simplified navigation idea very much actually. Can you go ahead and merge stuff up? (I created everything based on last year's pages but you can fell free to merge all the content of the pages to reduce the amount of pages :D ) Béria Lima msg 20:22, 20 December 2013 (UTC)
PS.: Just dont touch the gallery pages. Rilke is doing some LUA migration which will change them a lot and all the work we do will be lost ;) Béria Lima msg 20:28, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

Your technical help is needed

Hello, I'm addressing you as an Admin (indirectly picked this page searching for a recently-active en-speaker on the admins' list). One of our users has earlier tonight taken a "blessed initiative" and, somehow spotting on me while I was uploading my files and categorizing them, performed file-renaming to no less than 15 16 of my just-uploaded files as well as older ones, all invalid acts! I contacted them when I noticed the first four moves, assuming that they hadn't fully been aware that they were abusing their mover-rights, and let them know that I would pursue undoing those renames back to the legitimate names. Unbelievably, right after giving me a not-so-mannered response - they continued renaming many other files from my plethora of contributed images, and I have no explanation to that other than either craziness or an odd will to damage my work. I've been volunteering here on Commons from 2009 and haven't experienced such a terrible thing. Needless to mention that these 15 16 (and probably still counting) renames, being all against any policy or rule we have here, are an absolute joke and are all reversible to the last one, but obviously I can't do this myself as the rename process automatically converted the original names to redirects.. Very kindly fix it, given you have the technical tool to overcome it. Thanks.
