Hello, Missvain!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Banners[edit]

All the banners you have made and derivative works, appear in Category:Unsourced Flickr images reviewed by FlickreviewR and require human review. As derivative images their source should have the original URL from where they came, which is their real source, so it will save reviewers time in checking the copyright status, maybe adding the prefix "Cropped from" +Flickr file url for clarity. Then add the template add the file name you derived the image from here on the banner page and add file name you are using for the derivative banner here to the original image. That makes it very clear what the original source is and what it was derived from. Hope that helps because it really helps us reviewers. Good luck. Thanks for uploading File:Madame du Barry Playing the Guitar by François Hubert Drouais.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

No required license templates were detected at this file page. Please correct it, or if you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 14:02, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of FOP imagery[edit]

Heya, not sure which account to use to contact you, but hopefully here is ok.

I noticed you put a photo up for speedy deletion, and it has been turned into a DR instead.

In future, could you take any FOP related imagery to DR instead of speedy, as this will enable categories to be added, such as possible undeletion date, or grouping FOP cases from one country together -- this is especially useful when countries introduce FOP, such as Russia last year and photos previously deleted were easily found.

Hope that's all good. Cheers, russavia (talk) 22:02, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
 • use in any work, regardless of content
 • creation of derivative works
 • commercial use
 • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Albanian phrasebook WV.jpg. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. Nok sculpture of a sitted person[edit]

Hello,

your edits on the various "Nok sculpture of a sitted person" files seem to remove lots of information on the object, as well as the licences of the images. Are you quite certain that this is what you intend to do? Rama (talk) 22:40, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, the object is actually public domain because it is so old. Additionally, it did not remove any information aside from the licensing. I did intend on doing this, it's part of a Wikidata and Commons clean up project to ensure that objects are connected properly to their data entries on Wikidata. Thanks for contributing to Commons! Missvain (talk) 22:42, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hello,
The object is indeed in the Public Domain, but the photograph is not. Removing the licences I put there as author and copyright older is actually quite problematic.
As for Wikidata, I understand and fully support the notion: the template I used imports an object description related to the Commons category for the item, which is automatically generated from Wikidata (contains a link to the WD item as well as the object dimensions, exact location, credit line, inventory number, origin etc etc.) This is something I programmed myself as a prototype and demonstrator, so I'd understand if you found it patchy and will welcome suggestions for improvements.
Any chance we could find something that addresses everybody's concerns? For instance including a Public Domain template for the depicted artwork along with the Free licences for the photograph?
Thank you for your own involvement with both Commons and Wikidata! Rama (talk) 07:44, 9 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

nice upload, you can also upload into artwork template using commons:pattypan or old uploader. cheers. Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 21:24, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

PattyPan is only useful for mass uploads. I don't do those. I'm lazy about uploading the template because I don't fill out most of it and I just get lazy and don't feel like uploading images, given that I'm doing hours of research for so many artworks on Wikidata. Bah humbug. Missvain (talk) 21:52, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
ANd I don't understand how I can use that template on the normal uploader. I have to fill out all those forms. It's a waste of time to do one or the other. Very frustrating. Missvain (talk) 21:53, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
well, i use pattypan for 20-50 images. it's all fill down the spreadsheet. easy peasy. the old uploader (before improvements), allows you to put in the template code of your choice one at a time. (picking "It is from somewhere else") [1]

Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 22:12, 15 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Comme des Garcons[edit]

Hey there,

I took a bunch of pictures at the Comme des Garcons exhibition at the Met recently but wasn't sure about the copyright re: uploading them here. Specifically, I know that garments -- as clothes, anyway (unclear about the practically unwearable sort?) -- aren't copyrightable, but maybe the styling and presentation specific to the exhibition? Pharos pointed out that you created the Wikipedia article about it and I noticed it had some images (in Category:Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons Art of the In-Between), so thought you may have some insight.

Thanks. — Rhododendrites talk16:25, 24 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Regardless, your language and attitude is inappropriate. Wikimedia projects are a place for civil discussion, not name calling, "waaah" etc. It's childish and will not win you friends here. I've made over 43000 edits in ten years of editing Commons, sometimes mistakes are made. I have to "so fix it" other's errors, and sometimes folks have to fix mine. Besides, you had to revert seven edits. Thanks again for contributing, I just ask, including as an admin, that you use a respectful and civil tone when contributing and interacting with other editors. Please be careful when assigning date categories[edit]

I see that you've been adding date categories to uploaded images. Please be careful about assigning these: you've been making a some errors by assuming that the upload date is the same as the date that the photograph was taken. For example, see File:Kalmiopsis Leachiana.jpg or File:2014-09-25 13 02 43 View south at the sign marking the Idaho-Nevada border at the north end of Jarbidge-Charleston Road (Elko County Route 748) in Elko County, Nevada.jpg (the latter of which caused User:Famartin to become upset).

I would recommend slowing down and double-checking the creation date when you add the category. Thanks for your help! — hike395 (talk) 16:56, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

misidentified post office pics[edit]

Hi, I'm not sure but maybe you uploaded "File:Post Office - NARA - 280202 cropped.jpg" and related images, thinking it was the post office in Trenton, Tennessee. It appears not to be, based on National Register photos for the site, and Google streetview at the address for the site. No big deal, but I wonder if you have access to the information to identify where this is, and to fix the labelling for this photo.

Please conisder adding iw-links here on Commons[edit]

Dear MIssvain,

Thanks for creating new categories here on Commons as you did recently for Category:Stony Creek (Sacramento River tributary). It would be great if you could as well add the interwiki-link to the corresponding page on en-wikipedia by clicking here on Commons in the sidebar menu under 'In Wikipedia' on 'Add links' and then putting in the appearing pop-up box the link to the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. This will add a link to commons to all language versions of the corresponding article on en-wikipedia. Moreover this will avoid the corresponding article to be included in the maintenance category en:Category:Commons category template with no category set.

Many thanks if you could consider to do so, indeed this would reduce my efforts on adding these iw links later through patrolling the pages listed on the pre-mentionned category on en-wikipedia. I would like to thank you for all the great work you are realizing on en-wikipedia and here on Commons.

If you have any further questions on this do not hesitate to contact me. Best regards Robby (talk) 07:45, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete this? —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:12, 16 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

While the museum reopened after the fires, it wasn't a special event, and the images were also placed in the general museum category (so over categorized). I'm working on a major organizational project for Sonoma (where I live) and Mendocino Counties and I do not think it makes sense to have a special category for a day that someone attended the museum. Condensing the images down into interior and exterior and then putting them into the ice skating rink category I think makes more sense, than having a category for a museum visit day. Nothing to really lose sleep about :) Missvain (talk) 17:01, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Sure but it was useful for categorizing them all by date. E.g. a concert by a musical group isn't necessarily that eventful but is useful for having sixty pictures in one subcategory rather than flooding the top category. Can you explain the reasoning behind names like "Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center - Exterior" (i.e. using a hyphen mid-title, capitalizing "Exterior")? I agree that breaking up the pictures by these features is wise. Thanks. —Justin (koavf)TCM 18:10, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't make that category. You'd have to ask whomever did. But, many museums and historic sites, etc, tend to have "interior" and "Exterior" categories from what I have noticed over the years. It's because it just gets too cluttered in the main category. Honestly, as a researcher and someone who uses Commons images regularly in my work, if I'm looking at a museum or property I like seeing it organized by interior and exterior shots. Helps me get to what I need faster. But, perhaps the creator of those categories has other thoughts. Missvain (talk) 19:40, 17 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Point Arena Sea Cave.jpg.

Thank you.

Please stop removing files from the North Las Vegas category[edit]

You have repeatedly removed files from Category:North Las Vegas, Nevada, without putting them into any subcategory thereof. North Las Vegas is one of the hundred largest cities in the US, and it is not part of the City of Las Vegas. It is complex, because Las Vegas is used to refer to a larger area that covers a bunch of land that isn't technically part of the City of Las Vegas, including North Las Vegas, but stuff in North Las Vegas should continue to be categorized as North Las Vegas.--Prosfilaes (talk) 05:02, 23 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I understand. I'm working on a project around this region and I'm not done. Thanks. Missvain (talk) 17:05, 23 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr2Commons[edit]

I have just come across a few images you have recently uploaded from Flickr. I would appreciate it if in the future, you used the Flickr2Commons tool. This tool allows images to be moved to Commons from Flickr without having to download the images to your own computer. It also brings in the largest resolution of the image, as well making sure to list the correct license and url, making it easy for the automated Flickr Review system. Also, it is fairly easy to categorize images with this tool. To use it, you just need to go to the url and authorize it (where it says "authorise first"). --B dash (talk) 16:01, 6 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Sacramento Women's March - Jim Heaphy - 01.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Index, Washington[edit]

File:Index, WA - general store detail 02.jpg: any basis for calling the general store in Index, Washington a "restaurant"? Sure didn't look like one to me. Here's a picture that gives a fuller view. It's your basic rural general store/post office/etc. with some takeout food. I found it very interesting that some of that takeout food was Korean, but it still doesn't make it a "restaurant". Or do you possibly know the plae well, and they had tables that I didn't notice and that don't show in any of my pictures? - Jmabel ! talk 03:15, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Chuck E Cheese in UAE.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Category discussion warning

Nepalese cuisine has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
