Uprez[edit]

Just curious. How do you enlarge the resolution of a picture? G-Man 02:11, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well you don't per-se, in that you can't create detail that wasn't there but with decent software (I am using Genuine Fractals plugin for PS CS3 but you can just use PS Image... Resize... and specify larger dimensions than the original) you can interpolate a fair amount pretty smoothly. The success of the output will depend a lot on the input file. The major reason for doing it with smaller files is it is much easier to work with cloning tools etc. on a larger source file. The Churchill one was tiny so I doubled its size which seems to be pretty invisible thanks to GF. Mfield 02:16, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You were right![edit]

Hi, Matthew,
First of all I'd like to tell you that you were absolutely right about my fall image. I am sorry I was arguing with you. May I please ask you, if you like this image Image:A rainbow over Bridalveil Fall seen from Tunnel View in Yosemite NP2.jpg any better? Thank you for your time.--Mbz1 02:44, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's all right, I wasn't taking your argument as anything personal. That new version is much better, what did you do differently with the PP? There's a lot more detail in the trees and the picture in general has better tonal range. Mfield 03:58, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I had a play with your second one .... Image:A rainbow over Bridalveil Fall seen from Tunnel View in Yosemite NP2 edit1.jpg to show you what I would be trying to do to it. Selectively sharpened the trees and the mountains (masking each out so as not to affect each other or the sky), noise reduction on sky, warmed up the landscape a bit as the whole image seems a bit too cool, slight saturation boost and contrast adjustment. Ideally, if nbot shooting in RAW you would turn down all in camera sharpening so that you could add more later without causing problems with resharpening. I stopped short of adding it as an alternate as I think this needs to be reworked from the full size original to avoid too many saves. Your V2 is still smaller than the full size Canon XTi file so I assume it was cropped? Mfield 19:43, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Matthew, thank you very much! You've done great job with the image. It is so much better! I'm very bad with photo shops, even worse than with photography. The image was not cropped, but downsampled (to prevent you and others from seeing all its many problems ;-). Thank you for your time and for your help. I cannot edit my original myself and I would not ask you to do it for me. I would not like to take any more of your time.--Mbz1 21:15, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Churchill[edit]

I hope you don't think I'm stepping on your toes with the Churchill image. It's just that I find that your version, as a thumbnail, looks very washed out and over exposed. and when I tried to darken it it just revealed a load of distortions. I've tried uploading a smaller darker version which hopefully retains more detail. I've retained some of your improvements such as removing the wierd white line. Perhaps trying to enlarge a tiny thumbnail to 1.5 times its original size was a tad overambitious. G-Man 01:25, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No sweat, I've added my edit as an alternate which is linked from that one instead. Mfield 01:33, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE spidery thing[edit]

Per Commons:Featured picture candidates/Image:Gasteracantha mammosa spiderlings next to their eggs capsule.jpg. Yes, I know it wasn't you I was arguing with. And I did get the gist that "It was slightly sarcastic rhetorical question that's all.". After all I was being an ass in saying "Spiders bad" in the first place. But Cat-five's comment was just too hilarious not to respond too. ^_^ Oh, and I wont be continuing - there a better places to start a flamewar than an FP nom - though it is a humorous location. --ShakataGaNai Talk 04:40, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As you probably noticed I am not doing very well with the pictures :-), so I've decided to upload some of my videos instead. Here's one Image:Komodo dragons video.wmv.OGG. What do you think? There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Flickr[edit]

Hey, I just noticed your posts regarding the deleted Image:LA Skyz edit.jpg; I deleted the original Commons version for the same reason. Firstly there is a slight confusion in your comment to Herbythyme. You cannot revoke a CC license, but you can cease to offer it to others under the terms of that license at any time. That does not invalidate licenses already granted but stops new ones being issued.

Regarding the specific image, we have no way of knowing if the license ever was free. If it was, I strongly suspect the Flickr user made an simple error considering his profile says "None of these photographs may be reproduced and/or used publicly in any way without my permission".--Nilfanion (talk) 21:20, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually we do know it was free, as I don't edit images without confirming the copyright status first. What we don't have is proof, aside from the fact that we have the original image and the fact that we can't access it anymore means the license has been changed, Flickr locking the ability to download the original accordingly. The image was originally licensed under CC 2.0 at the time and the image I created with my edit was certainly licensed appropriately according to that. Mfield (talk) 21:41, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I don't doubt you, but personally I strongly suspect that this Flickr user clicked the wrong button when he uploaded this image given his strong "my images are copyrighted" statement and I'd try to give them benefit of the doubt in this sort of case. Anyway, no proof of free license => delete in most cases related to Flickr, particularly recent uploads (April 2008 is "recent"). Its unfortunate, but its all we can safely do.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:51, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree in general, the other issue being that prior to a year or two ago, Flickr's default upload preference was CC, something they had to change due to these kind of issues. Anything with an original upload date in the last year was certainly deliberately selected as CC. Mfield (talk) 21:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, judging from the comments on the page I'd reconsider that statement regarding the specific image. Indianbilly asked for and apparently got the license changed, but it wasn't verified. That suggests a cooperative Flickr user. The best solution would be to contact the user again (through Flickrmail) and make sure the permission gets forwarded through OTRS. Then we can restore the files.--Nilfanion (talk) 21:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Before marking it as copyvio, I checked the original version, and, if I remember correctly, it had not a clear source and licence (it did not use flickr as source). But an admin could verify it.--Fernando Estel ☆ · 星 commons es 08:06, 12 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Sincere apologies - I appear to have missed you posting. Equally I am "responding" without taking in all that is above this. However I did wonder myself about the number of older Flickr images coming up. Nilfanion's advice will be good - he is far more expert than me but equally I have no isse with undeleting pro tem while we look into it. I'll be watching this one now - sorry for the delay. Dear 'Peripitus' Your picture has captured me immediately. I can't stop looking at it! As we are giving out a magazine I would like to ask you permission to print this picture in our Paracelsus magazine. Paracelsus magazine is a product of global cooperation, with people from Europe, North and South America, and India volunteering their time and working without pay. The objective of the magazine is to blend ancient and modern wisdom of medicine and holistic healing. The magazine is published monthly in three different languages: German, Spanish, and English; it is read all on every continent of the world. It reaches physicians, alternative practitioners and ordinary people. Although we sell the magazine, we are a non profit organisation and the printing coasts are hardly covered. Would you be so generous and give us your permission to print this photograph? We thank you in advance for your consideration and reply and send you our very best wishes. Anna anna.beutler@gmx.ch

PS: For more information please visit our homepage: www.paracelsus-center.ch

Please note the original photographer is User:Peripitus who's talkpage is at [1]. I merely edited version 3 of this image. You should contact Peripitus with your request. Mfield (talk) 16:14, 28 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I have tagged this image for speedy deletion. Unfortunately statues in the US, even if installed in public places, are not covered by freedom of panorama unless they were installed before 1978. As such the copyright remains with the statue artist and not the photographer. Mfield (talk) 14:37, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Mfield!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I just wanted to say "Thank you very much" for your picture: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Las_Vegas_Strip_panorama.jpg

My name is Daniel, i used that picture in my little "travel around the world" puzzle game for android.

When a player sees your image (when completing a level) there is a short sentence describing the location visible on your panorama and also you are credited directly as "Photographer". Hopefully you are fine with that, if you want any changes please contact me directly. :-)
