Hi Mdaniels5757. I notice that you deleted File:Luxury Richland Logo.png and that it has been reuploaded. Can you check and see if this new file also meets the same criteria for deletion? In addition, there are other versions of this file that could be considered for deletion as well: File:Luxuryrichland1.jpg and File:Luxuryrichland.png. I deasagree with you. This is essentially the same photo as File:Trombe.jpg, just a tiny bit zoomed-in on the right side. It is from the same author and same original source. It was just uploaded on Flicker and mindlessly uploaded later on Commons.

Two days ago, I requested the split of File:MTA NYC Bus M42 bus at 1100 Avenue of the Americas.jpg from File:MTA NYC Bus M8 bus on 3rd Ave & 8th St.jpg. While the split was successful, the M42 bus image is still showing up in all the categories that are intended for the M8 bus. I too did several null edits, but it still didn't fix this problem. Hi there, without contacting me you simply deleted this file - claiming it's a duplicate - which I happily believe you.

But where is the duplicate? If you would be so kind next time when you simply delete something - to point out to other human beings where is the duplicated file with the Philippines Dimensions as set by the DPWH of the Republic of the Philippines is so we can use that one?

For instance this search: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?search=S1-4E&title=Special:MediaSearch&go=Go&type=image results for me in 0 hits. SO please point out to me where the duplicated version is?

What's useful with a bogus kept?

What's useful with this utterly nonsensical kept, that only stands there, because of some vandal inserted without ant thought bsome completely bogus deletion request on the other side? User A1Cafel

Hi, I saw that user A1Cafel has been blocked for violations. In the past this user deleted many images of Dubai that I uploaded from Flickr (with valid license) claiming they violated the FOP. I'm not sure this has always been correct. For example, I uploaded several images of pavilions related to Dubai EXPO 2020, which A1Cafel deleted due to FOP, but on Commons there are already dozens of images of other pavilions of EXPO 2020, all similar to the ones I uploaded. Please check categories when redirecting to duplicates

Good day. I noticed that something you deleted and redirected to a different version, File:Bill of Fare at Andre's Restaurant 02-1974 (3953734634).jpg, was much better categorized (eg, "February 1974 in Colorado" whereas the one you kept is simply "Colorado in the 1970s"; the gone version was categorized for the city, etc. I'll fix this one, but please pay attention to this in the future - making sure information is not lost when redirecting to "duplicates" is an important part of the process. Wikipedia Logos

Hello Mdaniels5757, maybe you can help again with moving some logos, but this time some more in once!? So...

Situation: During my visits in the area of the wikimedia logos I also felt on the Wikipedia logo, better on the Wikipedia logos. So the situation there:

I think when one area is structured in one way, using only one name if there is only one thing and not classic & 2003 or v2 & 2010. So what pair is better? What are the more precise category names? I think "classic" is not a good definition for a category and "v2" can also be misunderstood, thinking that there were only a "v2" and "classic" version (quasi "v1"), but there are already two more versions prior to them. So what to do?

My intervention was: I think using the years in brackets at the end of the names as a key for the different versions is more Commons like, more unmistakable and more clear than names like "classic" for a third version of something and "v2" for a fourth version (or 3.1 version). Using the years fits also better with categories like 2003 logos or 2010 logos, where no one of the logos or categories was yet connected. So for the sake of consistency:

  • I unifyed the names and renamed the categories with "v2" and "classic" in their name uniformly to 2010 and 2003
  • created own categories for the three older versions of the logo, see all in Wikipedia logo history.

Why I am asking? During this process I couldn't move all of the Logos to their renamed categories, the protected ones now remained on a redirect categoy which led to the following "Non-empty category redirects":

Speedy talk page attributed to "None"

I noticed that after "GeorgR (de)" added {{SD|F1}} to File:FB Collage.jpg, the bot notified the uploader by saying it was nominated by "None". This seems like a bug. If there have to be cornercases where the editor isn't known, perhaps the sentence could be skipped since "None" is actually a valid and linked username. Krinkle (talk) 21:25, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

Ticket 2023011210010224

Are you completely satisfied that the email behind this ticket covering File:AletaHancockHeadshot.jpg is from the actual photographer and is completely genuine? I ask because the uploader, User:Jamesjones2234, has violated a lot of rules, including recreating a gallery, creating a sockpuppet, reloading deleted images, and extensive conflict of interest editing on WP (see Draft:Weston Hancock.

I note that Jamesjones claims that the actual photographer is Weston Hancock (son of Aleta) while the upload text reads, " Uploaded a work by Unique Nicole from https://www.instagram.com/aletahancock/ with UploadWizard." Also, at one point it was noted that this image is extracted from File:Hancock Family 2022.jpg which has been deleted three times. The upload note on that file says that the photographer was Craig T. Mathew from https://mathewimaging.zenfolio.com/. So, on the record the image has three different photographers.

@Jameslwoodward: ticket:2023011210010224 purports to be from Weston Hancock, and I'm satisfied that it's from them. There were no red flags in there. But looking at ticket:2023011110008766, it's actually worse than you said: there's apparently a fourth photographer, who also did not give permission. I'll delete File:AletaHancockHeadshot.jpg. Deletion requests/File:BA 38 aerial view with ground scars.png - not speedy?

I added the speedy deletion tags to the file. I saw they were missing, but there was nothing in the file history showing their removal, so I thought I'd made a mistake and added them back. I know this image is not open-licensed, that its copyright belongs to the Metropolitan Police, they are specifically exempted by the Keeper of the National Archives (UK, the governing authority) from OGL licensing, and we do not have a license from the Met to use it. Therefore it's a copyright violation, right? Isn't that a speedy? Also, I am the uploader, and I am making the request. Doesn't that also make it a speedy? Category:Jiří Felger

Hi. I don't necessarily disagree that it "might" be useful to keep since it has a "No Uploads" template. But then again all their information, including the copyright status of their works, is available on Wikidata and there's nothing to put in the category. So it's not like anything is being lost by deleting it. Also, the clear consensus has been to delete empty unlikely to be used categories regardless of if they have a "No Uploads template or not. I don't want to set a precedent. For one it would just make certain categories, like Category:Painters from Czechia, unmanageable. The point in categories isn't to act as a faux way to find out if a creators work is copyrighted or not either. It's organize files into and in this case there are files to put in the category. So I'd appreciate it if you deleted it after all. Otherwise, I guess I could do a regular deletion, but I rather not waste everyone's time by doing one if there's no reason to. Thanks. Hi, I saw you deleted the file File:Southern-nazarene logo from NCAA.svg for exceeding COM:TOO. I disagree that this exceeds TOO; it's just a generic lightning bolt with three letters on it. It's certainly less complex than, say, File:Cyberpunk 2077 logo.svg or File:San Francisco Shock (logo).svg. Similar to the sound waves in the San Francisco Shock logo, I think the lightning bolt in this image is a pretty standard visualization of lightning, and is "so obvious, familiar, or commonplace to diminish their creative nature or registrability" (wording from the USCO decision on the Shock logo). Thanks for bringing the Shock logo decision to my attention; I must have not noticed on COM:TOO I'm not sure about it's applicability to this case, I think this is a bit more like w:en:File:Pac-12 logo.svg than the shock logo, but it's a much closer call than I thought it was. I restored the file because I received permission from the Image Rights Manager of the art gallery, who confirmed that the gallery owns the copyright to the image and the depicted work. Question about VRTS permission at File:JFSS 2.jpg

Thank you for adding the VRTS template to File:JFSS 2.jpg. I was the one who suggested to the author that they release the photo under a free license. I believe that the VRTS ticket also includes permission to use all photos on https://www.randyselzer.com/ and not just for File:JFSS 2.jpg. @FunnyMath The ticket says that the sender is open to allowing other media to be shared on an individual request basis, but does not provide blanket permission. So having permission for each photo is still required. Protecting files

There is no need to protect files where I am fighting with these Russian bot farms. They immediately choose another file. Two times per day I rollback them to keep them busy in one file. I don't think so. I checked linked WD object, but no GRP edit patterns were found. GRP usually just reverts you with multiple IPs (IP spoofing and/or VPNs) and marking you as "LTA/ustaše/domobranec/nazi/etc." He would also go to your contributions and revert some edits that aren't really connected to objects before (so like wiki-hounding). @RodRabelo7 Hi! Yes, OptimusPrimeBot tags all exact duplicates with {{Duplicate}}, which makes handling by admins easier than just the category. Note that "exact" means "files that show up in Special:ListDuplicatedFiles/have the 'The following file is a duplicate of this file' thing under 'File usage on Commons'", not "files that appear identical". —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 19:26, 12 March 2023 (UTC)

Undeletion of PD images

Hello there. Admin Fitindia deleted the files File:Mlle Long Professeur de piano.jpg and File:Mlle Long Professeur de piano (cropped).jpg due to them not having a license. I was unsure of the correct way to license the file, but it is labelled on the BNF as Public Domain. As they have not replied yet and I saw that you were active recently, would you mind undeleting both files and tagging them for public domain? Just a question but was the child of Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/11/Category:Surnames by continent meant to include the children categories? Names of maps illustrating the Russo-Georgian War

Hello, I requested a change in the name of a group of files with incorrect politicized naming of the war (limiting it within the borders of the Georgian-South Ossetian conflict); the modern interpretation takes into account the fighting on the territory of Abkhazia and the active participation of Russia both in the conflict itself and in the preparations for it. The old filenames (e.g. File:2008 South Ossetia war en.svg) did not take into account the spread of battles over the territories of South Ossetia and are now considered both obsolete and promoting a marginal view of the war; these files may be named as "2008 Russo-Georgian war" either in the title of the linked wiki articles or in the pseudo-neutral form "2008 war in Georgia". Deletion of Juice/A5 image

Hi, I just saw you deleted the File:Ariane 5 et Juice prêtes au lancement.jpg image I recently uploaded because it indeed was written as being all-rights reserved on Flickr, but I'm not sure this is fully valid as ESA clearly states (https://www.esa.int/ESA_Multimedia/Copyright_Notice_Images) concerning publicly-released images that those "may be used for educational or informational purposes" and "may be reproduced without fee, on the following conditions (that I thought I had respected)", concerning moreover images related to a space mission so important that they would have no reason to place them under any non-shareable license (even though not being explicitely indicated as being under CC 3.0 IGO, but that image you can find as well on that link https://www.esa.int/Science_Exploration/Space_Science/Juice has been widely shared by individuals). Is there something I'm missing with image licensing or do not completely understand ? Hi @MrSpockito. Unfortunately, permission for only "educational or informational purposes" is not permitted on Wikimedia Commons. Only content allows commercial use is allowed here; see COM:L for more details. Images licensed explicitly under the "CC BY-SA 3.0 IGO" license are allowed, though. DRs by User:Xharin

Hi. In November of 2022 User:Xharin nominated a bunch of images of coins for deletion because supposedly the website where the images came from no longer exists and you subsequently closed them all as keep because was no valid reason for the deletion requests. It appears that last week they renominated the images for deletion using the same justification, that the website where the images came from doesn't exist anymore. I was wondering if you could procedurally close all the deletion requests since they are clearly meritless. I'd list them here but it would probably be easier to just look through their edit history for them. I think the deletion requests are the only edits they have made recently. Thanks. Hi. You recently said that the image https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Andr%C3%A9s_Rodriguez%27s_official_protrait_(1989).jpg should be deleted, why? It's an official portrait. Hi @Guyermou! Thanks for reaching out. It's true that works of the United States Federal Government are copyright-free in the United States. But other governments have different rules, and Paraguay has no such law. Therefore, things like official portraits are copyrighted there, and are not allowed on Wikimedia Commons until the copyright expires or the author gives a free license. Presidential portraits of Paraguay are also made with the intent of being in the public domain, as seen in this Facebook post, by the Presidency, were it says "The Directory of Information communicates that president Horacio Cartes has authorized the use of his official photograph, which will now be part of the gallery of Paraguayan rulers in an official manner, it can be seen and downloaded in the official site" (https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=539472596132122&set=a.143238035755582).

Rollback functionality

Hello Mdaniels5757. In recent years I uploaded a large number of files on Wikimedia Commons, and every now and then I notice vandalic edits on my files from anonymous IPs. Usually it is removing captions or stuffing them with bogus random content or altering and deleting descriptions. Often I see the same bot-like vandalism pattern on other files when I look in the history of edits of the associated IPs. As per Rollback guidelines (“By personal request at administrator discretion”) I’m asking you to provide me with the rollback functionality. This way it would be easier for me to revert that vandalism. I could also revert incorrect edits on other files as well whenever I see it from the history of edits and whenever I’m certain it is pure vandalism. Did you not wait for comments? Did you not read my keep vote? This is useful on enwiki, and deleting it prevents anyone from doing that. You're not doing your due diligence in preserving what can be kept. Harpa images

Thank you for closing Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:Harpa (concert hall) which for months apparently no one wanted to touch, and doing so in a thoughtful, balanced manner. As you probably noticed, I'm now re-nominating some individual files from this DR with individual reasonings for these particular images, as I think that some still should be deleted. For most of those you kept, however, I think I can understand where you're coming from, as the architecture in photos like File:Harpa (48707513313).jpg looks rather generic. - However, I've now noticed a discrepancy in licensing for several of these images. The photos by Jeff Hitchcock, taken from flickr (like that example), have a verified CC-BY license on flickr; however, in the Exif metadata there's a CC-BY-NC (Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 Unported, see fields "Online copyright statement" and "Usage terms"). How are we handling such cases? Do we assume that the photographer changed his mind when uploading to flickr, as he explicitly chose the more free CC-BY license there, and ignore the contradicting (not Commons-compatible) license in the metadata? @Broichmore I reverted your blanking of redirects because blanking the page does not delete it, it just causes problems. I didn't notice that the moved pages were recently created, so I will delete them. Hi @Túrelio. I think those redirects are plausible, and that COM:CSD G2 (and C1) do not apply (see also COM:CATRED). But I already reverted once, so I want a second opinion from another admin (possibly you). Ultimately this doesn't really matter in my view (in either direction, I think there's no good reason these categories should be deleted and a minimal reason they should be kept). Perhaps it would help if User:Arflhn explains why they think these need to be deleted? —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 16:15, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Those redirects were mainly my work and I'm probably the sole user who was active on these categories when those names were being used, however now I use a more "standardized" name Tram route XX (network), only "Tram line XX (network)" redirects may be kept as they are plausible. Hi, can you explain why you rejected my edits? All categories that were sent for deletion have incorrect names and are not used anywhere. The total number of false categories is about a thousand. There is no point in keeping false categories. As an option, I suggest creating empty but correct categories for all streets of Kyiv. Then there will be no need to create something in the future. Feedback to uploaders of Geograph photos

Hi MDaniels, is it possible to give feedback only in cases of problems? Making a research on about 2,500 English churches, I often import 10 to 20 Geograph photos per day. In order to make the filenames unequivocal (concerning the subject of each photo), but not too long, I always mark the origin with the abbreviation "GeoUK" and the Geograph ID number. If I would get a confirmation note for each of these imports, my mailbox would be flooded.

I had added "{{CC BY-SA 2.0}}", which to my knowledge is the proper license tag for Geograph photos. If I have forgotten it, within a few minutes I get an automatic warning, on which I add it, at once. Prevent accidental broken upload

Now and then I spot files that are not audio files, yet still have the dimensions 0 x 0, currently there are 1254 files. Is there a page, suck as Mediawiki:Titleblacklist for titles, where one could write something like if filetype≠audio and dimensions are 0x0, prevent upload and prevent these broken uploads in the first place? File:Roundel of Antigua and Barbuda.gif was the file I found just before posting this. Luckily CropTool are often able to fix these. I guess most of these aren't broken, because they can be opened in my browser, however Mediawiki software apparently can't render them. @Mickey Đại Phát It says "© Copyright by VIET VOICE ENTERTAINMENT ☞ Do not Reup", so I would go with that over the license choice and not upload. @Neveselbert (mobile) and Neveselbert: I just checked again, and the image was, although not identical, either a derivative work of the image represented in the file nominated at DR or an image created at the same time as the other, and therefore still not PD for the reasons the DR'd file was deleted. No, the image had different licensing and I specifically released the copy I created under {{CC0}}. I never nominated this file for deletion for that exact reason. Your closure of several deletion requests

Hello Mdaniels5757,

I'm a bit puzzled why you chose to close several deletion requests - like Commons:Deletion requests/File:70 61...6376 Maßskizze.png, Commons:Deletion requests/File:NHE 33 historische Aufnahme.png, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Humboldt C 102 historische Aufnahme.png, Commons:Deletion requests/File:Hohenzollern Typ Hamborn historische Aufnahme.png, Commons:Deletion requests/File:O K Dt 500 PS.png, and probably more - as keep with the rationale Commons:Village pump/Proposals#Allow old orphan works. That proposal was limited to works compliant with {{PD-US-expired}} (= created before 1928) or {{PD-1996}} (not affected by the URAA). But all of the files in the deletion requests I listed above are said to be German works from ca. 1950, so don't meet either of these criteria. 1950 German works are all still protected in the US because of the URAA, unless they are cases of {{PD-ineligible}} or so, which is not the case here. So I don't quite understand the reasoning to keep them because of this proposal and ask you to reconsider those cases.

Also, while this proposal was closed as accepted (by the proposer), there is no real consensus behind it, and right now there is a debate going on about this at Commons:Village pump/Copyright#Old orphan works. Correct renaming of files of paintings

Hi Mdaniels5757, I am often making requests for renaming files of paintings and I would like to do it the right way. In my opinion [the name of the artwork - artist (Institution).jpg] like in File:Unter den Linden - Eduard Gaertner (Kunstmuseum Winterthur).jpg is pretty explanatory, maybe also the year of creation could be added right after the name of the artwork auch as in File:Self-Portrait (1899) by Giovanni Giacometti (MAH, Geneva).jpg, but I am not sure as then two brackets might be confusing. Request for clarification

Recently I've uploaded a derivative work from a freely licensed image (under CC-BY-2.0 license, File:ICC Men's T20 World Cup trophy.jpg) Whether the trophy itself copyrighted or not is unknown. But the image of trophy is derived from a freely licensed image (File:Jos Buttler with Rishi Sunak in 2023.jpg) So I think it's not a copyright infringement. Could you please clarify more on this? I replied here if Ooligan required. I think they are a set of images, and sometimes it may be unavoidable that a few dupes were imported. Currently their is a double set of photographs posted by SECDEF staff. This is the first time I have ever seen a double set posted to Flickr. So, I only uploaded one copy of each photograph posted by the SECDEF staff. None of the photographs existed on Commons as they were just released to the public. @A1Cafel. Also, I forgot to mention that I always use "Upload Wizard." Although it is slow, it warns of duplicates before you upload. In the unique situation above there were no warnings, because none of these current event photos ever existed on Commons.
However, "flickr2commons" (F2C) has a poor track record of flagging duplicates. Your opinion about OpenRefine and its Wikimedia Commons features: two (!) surveys

Hi! You have recently tried/used Wikimedia Commons features in OpenRefine (uploading files, or editing existing files). I'm curious to hear how this has gone, also if you only briefly tried these features.

To help the OpenRefine team with future improvements, it would be immensely helpful if you would be willing to spend a bit of time filling in two surveys. (Yes, two! Each of them uses a different method and (open source) platform). Both will run until approximately end October 2023.

  1. A first, classical, survey (fully anonymous) where you can tell us how you use the Commons features in OpenRefine, and how you (want to) learn to use them better;
  2. A second, more experimental survey (also fully anonymous) in which you prioritize the features that matter most to you. This second survey is a bit strange in that you can 'just keep clicking'. Feel free to use it as long or as briefly as you want; you can stop any time. Please also add your own suggestions!

Reapplying for License Reviewer

I have an inquiry about the appropriate timing for reapplying as a license reviewer. Given that my previous application was unsuccessful, I am interested in knowing when it would be advisable to reapply. @Btspurplegalaxy Apologies for the delay. I'd suggest no sooner than 3 months, something closer to 6 months is probably better. I recently nominated File:Monica Elfriede Witt in uniform.jpg for deletion, citing your closure of this deletion discussion. I took your closure as precedent in the nomination, but it's apparently not as cut-and-dried as I thought and instead I've led to your closing being questioned. I'm not an expert on the matter, just basing my understanding on previous decisions, and would definitely like a consensus on this; not asking your to come down one way or another, but would you mind looking in on the discussion? I agree, but Wikimedia standards say that libellous and insulting statements about living persons must be removed immediately. Prevent spamming in PDF files by new users, how it works?

Hi! I saw that you were the last one to edit the 281 filter. I'm not really aware of how the mechanism works. We held an event a few days ago where different archives around argentina uploaded a document related to the topic of this year, only one of them triggered this filter.
