Description from file name

Hi Magnus! I am wondering if you know about any tool (maybe made by you) which can extract the "description" from the file name. Similar to how "What is that" or "Add information" work. The reason I am asking is that I added a lot of files via commonist but I find it too painful to enter each files description in that tool. What I did instead, was giving a very descriptive name to each file, added many tags and a caption in EXIF using Picasa, before uploading. For example, please check the file names in Category:Orăştie Ethnography Museum which I just uploaded.

Another suggestion is extracting categories from Tag names encoded inside the EXIF (also description from the caption in EXIF). I tried to add a lot of tags and a good caption to all my albums that I uploaded in commons. Flickr for example can read those tags which then makes the pictures very searchable.

Please check the tags/keywords in the extended EXIF info for this file for example: File:Orastie Ethnography Museum 2011 - Colander from Ardeu Dacian Fotress.JPG

BTW, I love your wikipedia and commons tools. They save sooo much time! Best regards --Codrin.B (talk) 19:00, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Danke! Orchi (talk) 18:25, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Magnus. Are you aware of the fact that CommonsHelper has not been working for several days now? --Leyo 13:13, 27 October 2011 (UTC)

GLAMorous

Sorry, but I just can't see how to submit an issue in JIRA. Do I need to create an account? Anyway, the issue is really simple. At http://toolserver.org/~magnus/glamorous.php it says "For more information, see GLAMorous on meta.", but the link to meta goes to a page which doesn't exist. cheers, Rd232 (talk) 13:47, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

The link is auto-created from the tool title. Feel free to write something, it's a wiki! :-) --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:15, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Oh I see! Well maybe I'll make a placeholder page at least. It's a bit misleading otherwise! Rd232 (talk) 21:52, 2 November 2011 (UTC)
Well I did this. Hope you don't mind; I think it's better than an error page. Rd232 (talk) 23:02, 2 November 2011 (UTC)

And here. BTW: Are you aware of derivativeFX? It is a great tool to upload images, which are derivatives of Commons images. -- RE rillke questions? 00:05, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. I didn't know derivativeFX, but in this case it seems a little ... overkill? It's a screenshot of some thumbnails of free images, most of which even I couldn't reconstruct in that fashion, or find the originals. I believe that's one of these "it's in the background"-issues, just as you don't need permission from people who are on your photo but in the background, not the object of the picture. --Magnus Manske (talk) 00:10, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

AFAIK, de minimis is not applicable to thumbnails, if that is what you mean. Copyright law is completely independent from personally rights. So why is google allowed to create thumbs? A court found that google's use of the images is permitted under fair-use claims, that are not allowed on Commons. And contrary to google search engine, that's crewlers can be stopped usig a simple robots.txt, the copyright-holders of the images in some of your examples could not prevent generating a thumb without any credit. So you can't rely on german law as well. These are just my thoughts (and I am not an expert) and I refrain from requesting more sources now, but you should be aware of the general problem which can (mayby) cause that you are sued by some of the copyright-owners. And last but not least: Freely licensed under CC-By-SA means that it is attribution required. Thank you. -- RE rillke questions? 08:43, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

This image has plenty of unsourced, copyrighted imagery in it. So does this one. Yet they were not deleted. --Magnus Manske (talk) 13:36, 4 November 2011 (UTC)
Hm... coming here via Rillke's RFA, your image issue seems resolved, but I can't see why those other images aren't breaches of copyright. I don't see that this has been tested in a deletion discussion for either one - perhaps it should be. (Or perhaps there's some kind of tag that can be added to explain why those images are OK?) Bug with Commons Helper?

Hi!

I told the Commons Helper to move this revision from English Wikipedia to Wikimedia Commons. The outcome was this revision. The stamp is in the public domain since it is a 1957 US stamp (everything before 1978 is free), as proven here. The problem is that the image, despite being in the public domain, had a fair use rationale, which I didn't notice until after the image had been imported:

{{Non-free use rationale
|Article = Whooping crane
|Description = 1957 U.S. postage stamp with whooping cranes
|Source = WildlifeStamp.com
|Portion = The full stamp
|Low_resolution = Low-res photo
|Purpose = To use in the article
|Replaceability = No, it is the only U.S. stamp with with the whooping crane
|other_information =
}}

Since it's in the public domain, it's not supposed to have a fair use rationale in the first place. However, shouldn't the Commons Helper protest or at least display some warning if a fair use rationale is used on an image it is trying to copy? I guess that en:Template:Non-free use rationale should be added to some list of non-free licences. --Stefan4 (talk) 20:23, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Thanks, should be fixed now. --Magnus Manske (talk) 21:40, 12 November 2011 (UTC)

Todo

Hi Magnus,

recently someone encountered problems in MediaWiki:Gadget-Gallerypreview.js. More details are here. Feel free to bookmark or watch this page.

And I had a glad look at Wikipic-slideshow. Nice. One problem (not very likely) that could arise is if you request the original from the server, it could display in the wrong orientation due to Exif-Autorotation, a new feature in MediaWiki 1.18. Since most photos are bigger than the browser-window, this is actually not a "real" problem. Regards -- RE rillke questions? 13:50, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

Vorschlag: RepeatTranswiki

--Martin H. (talk) 18:50, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Flickr Mass

Hi Magnus. Thanks for your tools and your work. I'm using this tool now and I find it really helpful now that I have figured out what to do. I am not sure if you've been notified that the uploader does its job but you have actually no way to know it and to understand when it's done, unless you don't check his contributions or the category you're uploading to, because the page keeps loading and loading and it won't show any result. This might be not true when a small amount of images is uploaded (ten or so). --Elitre (talk) 11:40, 21 November 2011 (UTC)

I should add that the above is referred to my current task; the tool takes 4-5 minutes before actually uploading (the stream has more than 8k pics). Also it could be great if there was a way of stopping it, because if you mess with it you're going to deal with maaany dupes. --Elitre (talk) 11:58, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
Could this tool prevent uploading files that are already here (dupes)? -- RE rillke questions? 14:05, 21 November 2011 (UTC)
The tool tries to prevent uploads of dupes by looking for Commons files that have an external link to Flickr, as is generated by all Flickr import tools. --Magnus Manske (talk) 17:05, 24 November 2011 (UTC)
I assume a hash-search and user feedback what files were not imported is impossible? I had the feeling I was processing dupes uploaded by this tool. File:Altavilla Irpina (AV), 2011, Le miniere di Zolfo. (2).jpg was uploaded on 11:54, 21. Nov. 2011 before the link on File:Altavilla_Irpina_(AV),_2011,_Le_miniere_di_Zolfo._(11).jpg was removed on 13:15, 21. Nov. 2011 (diff) -- RE rillke questions? 17:39, 24 November 2011 (UTC)

Was muß ich tun? Erbitte Antwort per Mail. bbkuhse(at)t-online.de

{{ Blacklisted user; images from that user's pages must not be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.

--Martin H. (talk) 23:02, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
0 - Everything OK. License good, user good, file found.
1 - The server returned a failure.
2 - Internal error. Call to the server was not made.
3 - Bad license: the license at the server is incompatible with the Commons.
4 - Blacklisted user: ditto
5 - Invalid ID: the ID specified was not digits only, and it wasn't a URL containing
    a valid image specification either.
6 - Missing ID: no ID was specified in the request.
Lupo 10:45, 21 January 2012 (UTC)
Another such file was File:Wayne Gretzky on the bench of Phoenix Coyotes.jpg. Flickr account 35124296@N00 (xgeorg00, canyonero) is blacklisted for flickrwashing. Lupo 16:48, 21 January 2012 (UTC)

Please, your bot should not put some categories

I discovered this import done with your 'File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske)'.
Could your bot avoid to add Category:Genera of Araceae (no picture is a genus of Araceae! Only genus categories and genus articles are intended there).
More generaly to add any Category:Families of XXXXXX, Category:Tribes of XXXXX, Category:Genera of XXXXX, Category:Species of XXXXX.
To help you avoid these categories, I created Category:Biology categories that should contain no files.

Bot inexplicably placing licenses at the bottom of transferred images

This has been happening with thousands of images, and I didn't even bother saying something, assuming it would get fixed. It hasn't. See File:19th century chest.JPG. At the bottom of the text, it inexplicably places a license. It seems to do this on nearly every file uploaded. Please fix this ASAP, because it is posting incorrect information. Magog the Ogre (talk) 06:11, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Or take File:Prem Chand Pandey.jpg for example. The bot is just adding licenses to images willy-nilly. Magog the Ogre (talk) 06:32, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

File:Ybells.jpg: how is it even choosing these licenses? It's almost like it's purposefully choosing the wrong one to put at the bottom. Magog the Ogre (talk) 06:58, 26 January 2012 (UTC)

Magnus, this is a real problem so I would appreciate if you could address it with me; thanks. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:54, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

Hi, the images were not transfered by my bot. It appears the text was generated by CommonsHelper2, originally written by myself and now mainly operated by User:Jan Luca, and then used in a manual upload by the respective user (in the file upload history). If these had been uploaded by the bot, that would be the "uploading user". I have not looked at the CommonsHelper2 code in many months, but it appears to be blocked (why, I don't know either), which would explain the manual uploads. If the bot added the categories, or if they were added manually by the uploaders, I cannot tell; anyway, it is their responsibility alone. Maybe Jan can shed light on the technical issue, though, if there is one. --Magnus Manske (talk) 23:18, 7 February 2012 (UTC)

The thing is: I've seen this occur to thousands of images. This is not an isolated event where one user was appending it to the bottom; it's happened a ton. It's even so bad that I put code in my cleanup script to fix it. But (for whatever reason) it never occurred to me what a deep problem this is, given it's assigning licenses to files which users did not agree to. Magog the Ogre (talk) 01:42, 8 February 2012 (UTC)

It did work sometime this morning, but failed since. I just got the error message: "Could not connect to commonswiki-p.userdb.toolserver.org : Access denied for user 'magnus'@'turnera-bge0.esi.toolserver.org' (using password: YES)". --  Docu  at 18:19, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
Works for me. The error message if a toolserver issue; there was a DB server fail, maybe that's it. If that's the case, it should "only" affect some wikis. Nothing I can fix. --Magnus Manske (talk) 20:46, 8 February 2012 (UTC)
The form itself works indeed, but when trying to start a request on Commons, it outputs the above error. According to {{Toolserver}}, s4 is down. If Commons is replicated on another server, maybe it could be switched to that. In the meantime, I suppose I have to find another way to update New ships. --  Docu  at 08:42, 11 February 2012 (UTC)

I think it's sorted now. Schwede66 20:00, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok, now that I have overcome that hurdle, I have trouble getting the Flickr2Commons tool to behave. I'm trying to upload this file and it tells me that it's got an unsuitable licence. Here's the string that it gives: "Checking license ... Unsuitable license : <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <rsp stat="fail"> <err code="1" msg="Photo "o" not found (invalid ID)" /> </rsp>" Attribution share alike is, of course, one of the licences that is allowed. Any tips as to what is going wrong? Schwede66 20:07, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
(talk page stalker)Try linking it with the front page: http://www.flickr.com/photos/houseofhall/6054130494/. Magog the Ogre (talk) 20:33, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
Ok, that got it to work. But will that result in uploading the highest resolution photo that is held on Flickr? I see that in this case, it does, as the front page photo has the same resolution as the 'original'. But what if that's not the case? Schwede66 22:06, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
It uploads the highest resolution provided. Magog the Ogre (talk) 23:20, 25 February 2012 (UTC)
I see. Thanks for pointing this out. usecommons, a Python library based on your code

Hi Magnus! I'm working on a simple Python library to aid with attribution when reusing content from Commons. You can find it here. I used your MediaWiki:Gadget-Stockphoto.js as a reference in order to handle all the special cases in the same way; some of the code is basically a line-by-line port. I'm now left with another licensing and attribution question: how I should license and attribute this code? Gadget-Stockphoto.js does not explicitly mention licensing. Is it GPL:ed like MediaWiki? I would prefer to license my library under a more permissive license, I'm thinking MIT/X11, so that it's maximally usable by as many as possible – if I get your (and Krinkles? I'm not sure who's the copyright holder here) permission.

Another question: are you still developing Commons:Commons_API? There are some problems with the wellformedness of the generated XML.

Attribution goes to the authors, those are mentioned in the @author section on top of the gadget file.
The license is not explicitly stated, however by saving an edit to a Wikimedia Foundation wiki one "irrevocably [agrees] to release [the contribution] under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license and the GFDL.. So choose one of those (or both) as you like. Or we could come to an agreement for a third license. –Krinkletalk 21:51, 7 March 2012 (UTC)

Die Meldung des Commonshelper lautet:"Everything seems to be OK. Log will be written to /tmp/chquaqsE-dir/debug.txt." Also eigentlich kein Problem. Querying image data ...done. Retrieving image description ...done. Used 551973 times since 2007-01-12 TUSC verification successful. DEBUG : ./upload_bot.pl /tmp/chquaqsE-dir

User:File Upload Bot (Magnus Manske), Flickr images and Flickrreview tags

Please modify the added {{Flickrreview}} tags so that they use ISO 8601 date format 2012-03-22 and not March 22, 2012. This will avoid lots of reports of invalid tags from Slobot date normalizing. This may also apply to other tools used to upload Flickr files. --Denniss (talk) 21:39, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Simply use {{Flickrreview|{{subst:REVISIONUSER}}|{{subst:#time: Y-m-d }}}}. -- RE rillke questions? 21:51, 23 March 2012 (UTC)

Flickr2commons broken

Your tool flickr2commons seems to be broken. It tells me it uploaded, and gives me the links, but it's a redlink and there are no uploads in the bot's name. -mattbuck (Talk) 19:59, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing it, but there seems to be a new problem now. It doesn't always load the view/edit links anymore. This one just happened to me:

Mascot name

Your bot added File:Jack, Jesse, Julie.JPG. The description says Juction Jack along side his family, Juction Jesse and Juntion Julie.. I am wondering if you knew if that last name might be "Juction Julie" in light of the other two? Or could all three possibly be "Junction"? Y12J (talk) 02:29, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

I wouldn't know, but can redirect your keen eye to the following line in the file description page:

comment line should state Uploader

I suggest (with emphasis) to have the Uploader noted in the commentline by the UploadBot. cheers. --Itu (talk) 21:21, 24 March 2012 (UTC)

My name is Edoardo Bit, I am an architect and also a “young researcher” of the University of Ferarra (Italy).

I am writing a book on the “green walls technologies” and I have found very interesting some photos in your page. So, I would kindly ask you if I can use them in my book.

Obviously, if you gently decide to grant me the permission, your name (or your nickname) and the link of the pictures will be correctly cited in the credits of my publication.

The 3 photos which I would use are:

Hi Magnus Manske, Your bot recently uploaded this file from en.wikipedia. Some time ago, I removed a lot of incorrect classifications (cat:geographic information systems, cat:encodings, etc.) from building pictures. Do you happen to know where these incorrect classifications originate? Were they simply copied from en.wikipedia, or is the bot doing the moving the culprit? Hi, i see that you have uploaded the picture of Markku Koli, a Finnish Lt. Ger. Can you upload the picture of Ari Puheloinen and add it to Commons?--82.128.222.232 12:11, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Magnus,

I'm not sure if it's still absent, but at File:Asaritevfik.jpg your bot (and User:Miya who operated it) didn't recognize the a/m file description template and thus provided an incomplete file description page.

Per tr:Special:MostLinkedTemplates, the template is currently used about 7,595 times there. --  Docu  at 08:36, 1 July 2012 (UTC)

Erroneous categories with bot uploads

Again, in June and July numerous pictures have been uploaded with your bot, having included erroneous categories (standard: geographic information systems, identifiers, encodings, etc. are included). You claim that you are not responsible for uploading, but that the uploader is using some automated categorization tool. Well, as you are the bot owner: can't you just stop this malfunctioning automatic category finder? And can't you help cleaning up the mess? It's a big job to do this by hand and it is very frustrating that bots can mess things up much faster than I can repair it by hand. It is also very frustrating that when bots mess things up, rarely anyone is wiling to take responsibility. As an example of an erroneous categoryzation of a picture, included by your bot: see File:Sawtooths from South 4.JPG. KKoolstra (talk) 07:09, 5 July 2012 (UTC)

And again, my bot is not choosing the categories. See my previous reply. --Magnus Manske (talk) 14:16, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
But who choses the categories then? You say its not the bot, but a tool used by the bot. But who is responsible than for that tool? And is the bot owner not also responsible for the tools the bot is using? It's always the same with those bots: if they make mistakes, no-one seems to be responsible... It is your bot who is listed as the uploader, not someone else, so don't be surprised that I come to you for some explanation! KKoolstra (talk) 12:38, 6 July 2012 (UTC)
Transfered from en.wikipedia by User:Fredlyfish4 using CommonsHelper is in the comment column. Of course help recourses (including screenshots) about how the whole process works and how CommonSense does it's category-guesses would be fine. -- RE rillke questions? 12:44, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello, which specific image are you referring to? There's quite a few of them on Ricinus communis. --Magnus Manske (talk) 08:53, 26 July 2012 (UTC)

File:Phantastica.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
