Danke! Viele Grüße --Saibo (Δ) 00:42, 8 January 2011 (UTC)

Bilderbot, derivative works and extracted images

Hello! Bilderbot should not be doing edits such as this. While it is great that the bot adds notes about deivative images, it shouldn't be replacing/deleting the {{Extracted image}} tag. Extracted Image provides much more detail than {{DerivativeVersions}}, and is much more useful in the specific circumstances where it is used. How can these types of edits be reversed? Best regards, --Skeezix1000 (talk) 20:22, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Strange bug - although not a very bad one. I asked a toolserver guy and he said it is not an easy thing to filter the edits by the removed "extracted image" since it is not possible to get diffs using the API.
So I guesswe have to life for some time with this bug as Luxo does not have much time currently (see at top of this page). Maybe it only occurred today (after ~ two months of not running due to another bug - see above). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:14, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Ok I've found the "bug": the bot takes all description pages first, then he modify the description for all images, after that he saves all images. Because he did in this case about 4500 edits, he takes the description at 02:00 utc, last edit was at 20:11 utc. In your case he takes the description before you edit the page, otherwise he wouldn't remove your edit. Greetings, --Luxo 15:37, 8 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh - nice, good to know. So this merely was a one time problem due to the large backlog (see section above) resulting in (maybe) some/this single undetected edit conflicts in which the non-bot edit is lost. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:39, 9 January 2011 (UTC)
That's good news. Thank you to both of you! --Skeezix1000 (talk) 21:20, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Uploader

Shows me as not logged in when I am. Firefox 3.6.13. Rich Farmbrough, 03:58 12 January 2011 (GMT).

Hi Rich, http://toolserver.org/~luxo/derivativeFX works for me without problems with same FF version. Try again: log off and on again - is worth a try. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 10:54, 12 January 2011 (UTC)

Secure server recognition & {{self}} licences

When logged into the secure server, I find that DerivativeFX is unable to identify that. It would be great if that was a tweak for the future.

Also, I was wondering about licence applications for works where we at Wikisource are extracting images from books, where we are just extracting images and maybe crop and clean, though not wanting to deviate from the original, eg. File:Cartoon portraits and biographical sketches of men of the day.djvu and Category:Cartoon portraits and biographical sketches of men of the day (book) where we have extracted the works listed. Using {{self|PD-old}} just seems wrong as I am not looking to claim a licence and I cannot apply the original licence. Do you have thoughts for this? Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 03:01, 16 January 2011 (UTC)

Just some comments as Luxo does not have much time currently (see on top):
Yes - derivativeFX simply only uses the normal server. Using the secure server if a user is logged in there would surely be possible but would require some work or an additional checkbox at the beginning ("Please use the secure server"). I would say it is not useful to use highly valued programming time to fix this as the tool itself is also non secure it does not hide to an attacker what you are doing. A kind of "nice to have" feature. :-)
Although your session data would be protected better - that's true. But if you really are in a high risk environment you could use this workaround:
Workaround: just proceed (without being logged in on the normal server) until the last step when it displays the complete source code. Select it, copy it, and paste it in the secure form, select your derivative work change the file name and upload, link your derivative work from the original file's other versions.
Regarding the licensing: Yep, self seems wrong sometimes. I guess it is added because the derivative "work" could be also a more sophisticated one. The tool just makes a proposal and if it is wrong you can easily delete the self in the last step from the source code.
I see also many more possible features and improvements to this tool - but all our time is limited.

rotatebot is stuck again

hallo;

rotatebot is stuck again.

he/she/it kept re-rotating this image (& not rotating any other images in its cat.), until i manually removed it from the category (& reverted the image to the desired orientation):

File:Wittig.collection.manuscript.01.japanese.art.scrapbook.image.10.page.12.leaf.06.jpg

since then, the bot has missed at least one rotation cycle.

my apologies if something from this image "broke" the bot(?); but i have no idea how this could be caused...

Lx 121 (talk) 08:24, 18 February 2011 (UTC)

follow-up point; this is going from memory, but i believe the jam-up occurred in approximately the same timeframe as the recent media-wiki upgrade @ wm projects. no idea if the changeover had anything to do with the problem, or not...
Lx 121 (talk) 00:48, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
I think that was the only image with problems.. see the contribs of the bot. If the problem occurs in masses we need to disable it and write Luxo an email (see on top of the page). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 01:14, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Rotatebot is not removing {{Rotate}} from pages and returns to repeat rotation next time it runs. Edits are not appearing in its log and it is not recognising images in Category:Images requiring rotation by bot. Not a mass problem (yet). Finavon (talk) 20:14, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
His contribs show that it worked in one of four images. Of course - could be update related. I have asked User:Dcoetzee for help since he has an own rotatebot. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 21:45, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
I just turned on my bot, it should work correctly as long as it doesn't clash with Rotatebot - hopefully it doesn't exacerbate the issue with multiple rotates. Dcoetzee (talk) 22:38, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Bug because of a design change of mediawiki - I'll fix it tomorrow, until then he doesn't start. All my bots are affected. --Luxo 22:41, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Could you describe the change for interest's sake? I'm mildly surprised that the change doesn't affect DotNetWikiBot... Dcoetzee (talk) 22:45, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
perhaps, once the root cause (in mediawiki) is identified, a general notice about it should go out to all the projects? so everyone can check/fix affected bots. OR push a general fix upstream @ the mediawiki developers? or both? Lx 121 (talk) 04:22, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

fixed, works again. My bot don't use the api for edits, he has a primitive check to see if he's logged in; he simply search the code "wgUserName"="Rotatebot",. Now they changed something at the javascript, it's now "wgUserName": "Rotatebot",.
I should change it to the api, but I don't have time at the moment. --Luxo 12:18, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks for fixing it. We will keep monitoring it while you are away. --  Docu  at 13:01, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

RotateBot: Can't rotate image

Hi Luxo,

it seems, RotateBot doesn't rotate anything at the moment. It writes always "Can't rotate image" and "corrupt JPEG file". Will this be fixed soon? It's my first Upload here, and I don't know, how to rotate it manually.

Greetings --Magiers (talk) 18:48, 11 March 2011 (UTC)

Great! Thanks for your help! Greetings --Magiers (talk) 10:09, 12 March 2011 (UTC)
It might have been caused by File:Libeňský most, lampa.jpg being included in the series. As that file is gone, I asked Dcoetzee to re-activate it. --  Docu  at 05:38, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

bug fixed. reason was a change with the sortkey. here the sortkey is

[sortkey] => 90
ONE RIVERWALK PLACE.JPG

in the past the filename was not in the sortkey field. Greetings,--Luxo 13:58, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for fixing it. Let's see what happens with File:Libeňský most, lampa.jpg now. --  Docu  at 14:03, 13 March 2011 (UTC)

wikigit

Hi Luxo! I'm going around helping bot owners to publish the source code of their bots on wikigit, a github organization created for this purpose. Publishing your source code ensures that others can take over maintainence of tools if the original author becomes unavailable and allows others to create bots based on yours. Very little effort is required - in the simplest case all you have to do is e-mail a ZIP of the source code to an owner. Please take a look at the options and let me know what you want to do, as it'd be great to get Rotatebot on there. I'd also appreciate any feedback on the project since it's new. Thanks! derivativeFX: no known license found for this image

Hi, a little problem "1.)Unknown templates" + "no known license found for this image!" within this image: File:Skały Rzędkowickie Studnisko 29.05.2010 p.jpg. Could you help with this. Thx. Przykuta[edit] 08:13, 4 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi Przykuta, I can confirm this for this image. I have no clue why derivativeFX thinks there is no license. In the meantime you need to manually upload the image and make a description page. Best: just copy the old page and change the source= field. Works fine for me for other images. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:19, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

derivativeFX: translation help

Hello. I want to translate this tool to my native languages, Russian and Belarusian. Can you help me with this? --KorneySan (talk) 13:03, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

derivativeFX: Time Zone

After submitting my derivative image, I was told this:

User:Bilderbot will add at 02:00 a notice about this new derivative file to the original file(s).

A time without a time zone (or a date for that matter) is completely useless; I suggest using a date and time in ISO 8601 format, such as:

2011-05-05 02:00:00 -0700

Mfwitten (talk) 04:20, 5 May 2011 (UTC)

As usual for Commons this is the standard time UTC (you can see it here Special:Contributions/Bilderbot). I would suggest to simply add (UTC) - this would be a minor improvement to derivativeFX. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 00:23, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

Removing {{watermark}} templates

Is there any way your bot can remind people to remove {{Watermark}} (and other) templates after a crop has been performed? I'm finding many images still listed in maintenance categories because editors aren't removing templates after performing crops. Thanks! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 08:58, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

derivativeFX: Date format

Hi Luxo. Just spotted that the date format automatically inserted into the Information template breaks the built in translation. The inserted format is YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM (Timezone). The addition of the time-zone means that {{ISOdate}} can't parse the date correctly. Would it be possible to either change it so that it's not automatically added (or is commented out)? Cheers /Lokal_Profil 14:47, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

After taking a look at {{ISOdate}} another solution would be to output "YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SSZ" where the "Z" indicates that it is UTC time. If seconds are a problem then I guess simply adding ":00Z" should work. /Lokal_Profil 14:57, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
Or leaving the hours:minutes simply away. Another thing: I would prefer to have the date of the derivative work and the dates of the original(s) there (especially if there is only one original like it always occurs then retouching photos).
{{Original date}}: {copied from orig. date field}, {{Derivative date}}: 2024-05-08
... or similar. But this is quite a bigger task. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 15:08, 3 June 2011 (UTC)
Just found some weeks ago: {{Original upload date}} → 8 May 2024 (original upload date) - a similar template with a clever option (takes the date as parameter and can adjust to word order). Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 04:51, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
Original date would indeed be better. --  Docu  at 03:56, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

RotateBot: DCT coefficient out of range

Hi Luxxo,

Would you have look at File:OffenbachDSC00244.jpg? Maybe there is a way to rotate files such as this one. There was a series of the same error message on Rotatebot/Log. --  Docu  at 03:56, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

I report problem with more files. [1] [2] --Dezidor (talk) 10:47, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

more problems with the same error msg, dozens of them.

also it isn't rotating my file File:Chushingura.characters.of.the.story.e-hon.utagawa.kuniyoshi.pages.14.15.leafs.07.08.jpg; no reason given, but it has already missed one "cycle"; i assume it's jammed and/or backlogged?

pity, because it's a VERY useful tool.

Lx 121 (talk) 13:08, 24 June 2011 (UTC)

We could switch bots again and ask Dcoetzee to turn on his bot if Rotatebot is broken. See User_talk:Luxo/Archive2011#rotatebot_is_stuck_again.
I did rotate File:OffenbachDSC00244.jpg and File:Chushingura.characters.of.the.story.e-hon.utagawa.kuniyoshi.pages.14.15.leafs.07.08.jpg now. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:29, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
thanks @ saibo ^__^ Lx 121 (talk) 09:41, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Something seems indeed wrong with those jpegs. I also rotated File:OffenbachDSC00283.jpg and it lost kilobytes (like the other Offenbach image) despite the rotation should be lossless and exiftran did not report an error. I checked in GIMP then (compared the image differences) and noticed that the rotation was indeed not lossless. Strange. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 16:45, 24 June 2011 (UTC)
I don't think it's broken, but there seem to be some images it can't rotate. If this are done by another tool, all the better. --  Docu  at 02:50, 25 June 2011 (UTC)
Yes, this is what my manual rotations show - rotatebot is okay. Apparently we got many recent uploads of special jpegs.. I do not know how we can rotate them lossless - exiftool didn't to it. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 03:07, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

Dezidor's images are all rotated (see my recent log) without any size loss (and without errors). It would be good if a bot could do this - I do not like to be a human bot. ;) Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:49, 25 June 2011 (UTC)

That's really strange I don't know why this happen. It must be a bug of jpegtran, sometimes it gives me this error, next time it works without a proplem. I'll look for this, but at the moment I don't know a reason. Thanks, Greetings--Luxo 10:03, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

Don't working anymore

Also Du hast verändert, was war es dann (Weiterleitung, Systemabhängig)?
Gruss--Luxo 15:34, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

DerivateFX

Hello, Luxo

My name is Carlos. I'm interested in translating your application "derivativeFX", to spanish. I see the application is already translated to five languages, and adding spanish would be useful for a lot of people. Tell me, how do you like the idea? Can you do it if I send you all the text translated, or would you need anything else?

Sorry for my bad english. I hope this message makes sense to you. Thank you very much for your time!

Perhaps you aren't catching that, because I didn't do a good explanation: the removal of the nowiki tags left the page with an odd apostrophe in the upload log. Magog the Ogre (talk) 09:26, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

derivativeFX unreliable

Is there any particular reason that derivativeFX gets stuck a LOT? It's as if it goes offline or ceases to function on a fairly regular and random basis. Sometimes it seems to kick back into gear after a while, and sometimes it just stays dead. Jbarta (talk) 14:44, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Well sometimes the Toolserver is a bit overloaded, then it's slow. And it uses CommonSense for every image, this is even not very fast. But if I test it now I don't have any problem.--Luxo 17:26, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Please stop User:Rotatebot

Hi Luxo, looks like Rotatebot finally became obsolete! See Commons:Village pump#Autorotation using EXIF tag with MW 1.18. The bot should probably be stopped and later maybe deployed to only change the exif field in the metadata when the orientation is wrong. Multichill (talk) 06:43, 6 October 2011 (UTC)

It shouldn't be stopped as it only works on demand. If the new feature really works, demand would just become rare, but I doubt it will become obsolete. --  Docu  at 06:51, 6 October 2011 (UTC)
He's updated, see Commons:Village_pump#Autorotation_using_EXIF_tag_with_MW_1.18. He read the exif tag first, so you can use it like before. If just the exif tag is wrong, he just set the exif tag to normal. Greetings,--Luxo 15:02, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
See here. --Luxo 15:04, 9 October 2011 (UTC)
The new MediaWiki feature might also create additional demand for old pictures, e.g. File:Westminster river view at night.jpg: It probably displayed correctly before, but had its orientation incorrectly defined ;) --  Docu  at 11:34, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
If you have a look in User:Rotatebot/Log you notice that this is now Rotatebot's new task: correct wrong EXIF info. :-D --Saibo (Δ) 13:28, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
Most of them images uploaded just now. Wonder if the new feature actually increases the need for rotatebot. I couldn't find any image that didn't have an EXIF tag reset. Would be nice if that could be seen on the log. --  Docu  at 13:58, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
Ah, sorry - just look here: Special:Contributions/Rotatebot (search the page for "by 90°)" or "by 270°)"). I have added this as a hint on top of the log now.
@"Most of them images uploaded just now." - Because the server-side cache of most old images hasn't been refreshed as of now .. much more to come. ;) Yey, unless people will use EXIF-compatible tools to view/rotate their images on their PCs I guess this 1.18 update will increase the need for Rotatebot. File:Obytný přívěs i Synagoga, Žatec.jpg, File:Škoda 1000 MB in Žatec, Feb 1994.jpg, File:PriceWaterhouseCoopers Building.jpg were really rotated. Cheers --Saibo (Δ) 14:14, 15 October 2011 (UTC)

Hey Luxo. I made a polish translation for your wonderful tool. I hope it's complete. How can I send it to you? Masur (talk) 13:48, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

Request: please, undo Rotatebot image

Greetings Luxo, I'm sure there must be some need to alter or align some images but the mindless Rotatebot turned an image of Hebrew text into what it thought (punny, huh?) was Chinese. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2nd_century_Hebrew_decalogue.jpg Can you please correct it back to the prior image. TIA — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gnach (talk • contribs)

User:Iwanna requested this rotation, I've reverted it. Next time you can revert images self, if you look at the file history you see the revert button of every revision. Greetings, --Luxo 20:33, 23 November 2011 (UTC)

Any chance of Rotatebot handling more rotates?

Rotatebot streikt mal wieder
