Cat-a-lot: Removing from Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 by Katie Chan

Bleah. I seem to have messed up this morning (it was too early!) by accidentally removing all your WLM images from the wrong category. I put the wrong one into cat-a-lot, and removed your images from Category:Wiki Loves Monuments 2013 by Katie Chan. I'm so sorry. I'm looking into how to revert that, but for the moment don't know of a tool that can bulk rollback all the edits at once. Am investigating. --MichaelMaggs (talk) 06:33, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

All fixed. :) It's a good thing they're almost always titled in the form of "EH1234567 XYZ.jpg", and no one else has decided to name their uploads using similar names. KTC (talk) 10:26, 28 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for participating in Wiki Loves Monuments 2013! Please help with this survey.

Dear KTC,
Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2013, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world! We would like to ask again a few minutes of your time.

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 365,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from more than 50 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2013.

Kind regards,

the Wiki Loves Monuments team

Hi, this photo is a derivative work. The exhibited and displayed original works need credits. Besides authors' names, the licences, and titles (if given at the description pages) are required. Please add this information for each work to avoid deletion requests. Thank you. --Martina talk 18:00, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Unlike the other people you have left similar comments to, when I first uploaded I had already clearly marked in the Permission field the photo as {{Derived from}} each of the images shown. If you had actually looked, you would have seen that. In fact, I had also done so with a similiar photo from another photographer. If you don't think that's enough, to borrow a enwiki term SOFIXIT. Altneratively, feel free to nominate it for deletion, along with Template:Derived from, and I'm guessing most of the 27,000 images here. Regards -- KTC (talk) 10:40, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
Like in the other files with images of WLM exihibitions that I commented on, your file description page does not name the authors nor the specific licenses chosen by them (partly national CC versions). Best practice examples how to comply with the license requirements are File:GLAM-WIKI_2013_068.jpg and File:Wikimania 2013 reception area, Jockey Club Auditorium, Hong Kong Polytechnic University - 20130811-03.JPG.
The very vast majority of files with Template:Derived_from are cropped or otherwise optimized images, thus original authors and licenses are anyway copied from in the original work. --Martina talk 05:08, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
I don't disagree that what you added to this is perhaps better practice. However, what's currently on File:Wiki Loves Monuments 2012 photo exhibition at Wikimania 2013.JPG is sufficient. CC stated in their FAQ on CC4 that "licensees [can] satisfy the attribution requirement with a link to a separate page for attribution information [... as] was already common practice on the internet and possible under earlier versions of the licenses". If that wasn't true, every use of images hosted on Wikimedia Commons at the other projects would be considered a violation. Don't get me wrong, I applaud your efforts in getting image licensing compliant but let's have some common sense and spend our energy going after those images that doesn't have the source images listed/linked at all. -- KTC (talk) 11:42, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
CC4 does not apply to these 2012 files. CC-by-ca 3.0 license legalcode does not cover CC's point of view. There are even court decisions that a hyperlink is not a suffiient attribution. I agree that giving no source at all is even worse. But that doesn't heal a weaker copyvio. --Martina talk 18:00, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
I didn't say CC4 applies here. We will just have to agree to disagree on the interpretation here. You are of course free to remove every use of Commons files on all the other Wikimedia projects since by your interpretation they are all copyvio..... -- KTC (talk) 00:25, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
My interpreation does not go so far.
"if a credit for all contributing authors of the Adaptation or Collection appears, then as part of these credits and in a manner at least as prominent as the credits for the other contributing authors. "
The main problem in your handling can be seen at a glance, if you click on the button "use this file on the web" at the top of your file's description page. --Martina talk 06:20, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Wikimedia UK categories

I don't understand Category:Featured pictures on Wikipedia, German supported by Wikimedia UK and Category:Featured pictures on Wikipedia, English supported by Wikimedia UK. For a start, I don't think it is at all useful to have hand-made categories on Commons that indicate usage or feature status on any given Wikipedia. There are hundreds of thousands of images used on Wikipedia and they get added and removed every day. Who would maintain such a list? The individual pages record their usages and if you want to discover usage then there are tools on Commons / toolserver that retrieve this sort of thing by making a simply query. If it can't get the "featured" status then perhaps that can be fixed - because Dschwen's "good pictures" button certainly has access to that info. Secondly, my images were not "supported by Wikimedia UK". I wasn't paid, nor was my equipment donated by Wikmedia UK. The fact that I entered them into WLMUK is quite different to "supported by". I'd have taken and uploaded those images regardless of the contest. -- Colin (talk) 10:20, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi Colin, categories for featured status on Wikipedia (as opposed to usage) is not new. While usage can and does change easily every day, featured status is something special that we want to highlight, as done by the little banner in the image description page for example. I understand your point about the "supported by" and it was not my intention to suggest otherwise. I have hopefully clarify what I meant a little bit. If you want me to remove your images from the categories, I would of course do so. -- KTC (talk) 10:35, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Well there is already Category:Featured pictures from Wiki Loves Monuments UK 2014. I think it would be clearer if my pictures were in that category only. You can add the WLMUK categories to to a "supported by WMUK" parent category if you like. Best to keep "supported by" image categories for those that really were funded (or taken at events organised by) WM UK. I see you've changed the wording but it doesn't really change the fact that the category is wrong and appears to be taking credit for images that aren't really directly supported. I believe some of Diliff's cathedral images were partly supported by WMUK when he did his grand tour but not all of them will be. -- Colin (talk) 11:12, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
@Colin: how about this? -- KTC (talk) 00:13, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
I think there is confusion as there are two feature picture forums. So some of images in that category are featured pictures on Commons that just happen to also be in Wikipedia articles. I would expect "Featured pictures on Wikipedia" to be ones that were awarded FP on Wikipedia. -- Colin (talk) 08:48, 26 February 2015 (UTC)
They all are. All 9 images in that category at the moment are featured pictures on at least one language Wikipedia, at least according to their description page: "This is a featured picture on the XXX language Wikipedia (... ...) and is considered one of the finest images." -- KTC (talk) 11:04, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi KTC, thanks for your request for license reviewer status. The request has been closed as successful, and you've been added to the list of reviewers. You can now start reviewing files – please see Commons:License review and Commons:Flickr files if you haven't done so already. We also have a guide how to detect copyright violations. Potential backlogs include Flickr review, Picasa review, Panoramio review, and files from other sources. You can use one of the following scripts by adding one of the lines to your common.js:

importScript('User:ZooFari/licensereviewer.js'); // stable script for reviewing images from any kind of source OR
importScript('User:Rillke/LicenseReview.js'); // contains also user notification when review fails, auto blacklist-check and auto-thank you message for Flickr-reviews.

Hey Katie, any chance you could upload a version of File:Boat Race 2015 - Women's Trophy (01).jpg with a tight crop around the trophy itself? I'd like to use it in en:Women's Boat Race 2014 if I may as it was the first time that particular trophy was presented. If it's ok, could you ping me at Wikipedia as I seldom frequent Commons.... File:Noreen Murray (cropped).jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Eight days into Wiki Loves Monuments

Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
Thank you for submitting so many photos to the competition! You're one of five people who have uploaded more than 50 images to the UK competition. Photos from this year are already being used on Wikipedia - though it may take a while for the monuments map to catch up so don't be disheartened if some pins haven't turned blue yet. WLM runs until the end of the month, so please add more and invite other people to take part. The UK is closing in on 1,000 uploads putting us just behind the United States in 14th place out of 49 countries taking part. Let's see if we can jump a few places. If you have any questions, feel free to leave a message here or contact me directly at richard.nevell@wikimedia.org.uk.

An update from Wiki Loves Monuments UK

Thank you for taking part in Wiki Loves Monuments UK
More than 300 people have contributed a total of 4,000 photos to this year's competition and we wanted to say thank you for helping us get this far. The competition runs until the end of September, and you can upload as many images as you want - so feel free to document some more sites. Or why not go through your old images to see if you have any others that could be submitted?

Since you've already submitted some pictures to the competition, you might be interested in the banner mini-contest; to take part you crop your images to a 7:1 and upload a new version. You can find out more about how to do that here. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the competition and share it with others! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 12:24, 22 September 2017 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2017 is open!

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2017 Picture of the Year contest, but not yet in R2.

Dear KTC,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2017 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the twelfth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2017) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top 2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for a maximum of three images. The image with the most votes will become the Picture of the Year 2017.

Round 2 will end on 22 July 2018, 23:59 UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee 11:33, 17 July 2018 (UTC)

Photo ID

Hi there. A user came into the Wikipedia help room tonight saying that this photo which was extracted from here is not of Alice White but instead a different (French) rower. I am in no position to judge whether this is true or not and so instead pass along this concern for you to look into (or not) as you see fit. Barkeep49 (talk) 02:31, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Could you please increase the frequency of git-pulling of the FPCBot ?

Hey KTC,

I noticed that the FPCBot is not working as I used a the Wikipedia python library (which was used by the bot in 2013) instead of the pywikibot library and It's taking too much time to pull the code and probably the Wikipedia library is deprecated. Could you increase it's git-pulling to 3 times a day ? Who about 2 hours (at 3:00, 10:00, 19:00 UTC) before the bot runs ? -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 02:23, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

@Eatcha: Okay. And the bot is back at work. :-)

and

$ pip install tendo

@Eatcha: It works fine. Removing the single instance check is an interesting decision though. :D I'll change the crontab to run using python3 from now on. -- KTC (talk) 13:53, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

Any guesses what's caused the bot to stop removing withdrawn and FPXed Noms ? -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 20:40, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
@Eatcha: If I knew how to fix it, I would have done it. Clin All I can tell you is that oldEnough = self.daysSinceLastEdit() > 0 (line 201) evaluates as FALSE. -- KTC (talk) 22:06, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
Please pull the source and run the bot, I had replaced a redirect with a direct link that caused some mior problem at the FPC. -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 14:21, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
oldEnough = self.daysSinceLastEdit() > 0 is okay, at max we can only get a lapse of 8 hrs(same as the cron job) during which a user edits the page to confirm the bot's edits. Thus it should print false, it indicates users a FPC are fast enough to review the bot's edits. -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 14:33, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
@Eatcha: I've got a fix for the withdrawn thing I think. Let me figure out how to contribute the patch on github. -- KTC (talk) 14:47, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Don't you have the merge rights on the repository ? If not, I will merge your fork. Or you forgot your password ? Or anything else ? -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 14:52, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Please Pull and test-run -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 15:08, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

@Eatcha: My withdrawn changes worked! :) -- KTC (talk) 15:18, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

Great, I'm now adding a test for the FPXed and If it works (I think It will, then we can close the issue at github) -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 15:21, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
@Eatcha: Assuming isFPX() works correctly, then it should work as is, but the issue on github stated FPD as well, which is why I hadn't closed it. Could of course spilt it into two different issues, one the regression (FPX), and one a feature request (FPD). -- KTC (talk) 15:27, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Don't need to split, I think it should be easier than the FPX problem -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 15:31, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Are you working on the FPD ? If not I will start working on it with my friend , I don't want double workforce to do the same work that can be done by one. I added a test nom for the FPX -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 16:55, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
@Eatcha: No, please go ahead. I don't actually know python, so the best I can contribute is relatively simple code changes for bugfixes. -- KTC (talk) 17:14, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Ok, but do you know how to set-up a new bot ? -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 17:20, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
Of course I will provide the source -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 17:20, 26 May 2019 (UTC)
@Eatcha: A scheduled job like FPCBot? Sure, pretty much just follow the instructions on Wikitech. I can help if you want, or you can just add me to improve the bus factor. -- KTC (talk) 17:54, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

I'm planning to use the source of FPCBot with some modifications to adapt with these projects. -- Eatcha (Talk-Page) - ping me 18:15, 26 May 2019 (UTC)

@Eatcha: I'm in the UK. I do not have access to Toolsforge etc. during work day. I am unfamiliar with Commons Bots policy and expectation. Looking through the page quickly suggest one can test things manually slowly, especially why the Bot Request is open. Maybe you should open that and ask explicitly? In the mean time, some tests can be done without the bot actually making any edits.
Someone need to set up the bot on Toolsforge to be able to login. From what I can tell, pywikibot support normal password, BotPassword, and OAuth. Either you can sort it out, or you can email me the relevant information to set things up. -- KTC (talk) 18:09, 27 May 2019 (UTC)

September 2019: it's Wiki Loves Monuments time again!

Hi

You're receiving this message because you've previously contributed to the annual Wiki Loves Monuments contest in the UK. We'd be delighted if you would do so again this year and help record our local built environment for future generations.

You can find more details at the Wiki Loves Monuments UK website. Or, if you have images taken in other countries, you can check the international options. This year's contest runs until 30 September 2019.

Many thanks for your help once more! MichaelMaggs (talk) 15:35, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Commons Photographers User Group: Meeting on September 26 and other stuff

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I've got a quick update for you, containing three items:

  • I’d like to invite you to our group’s second Virtual Meeting on Saturday, September 26, 2020. As last time, this meeting will serve as an opportunity to get to know each other better, share learnings, and connect in times of the global COVID-19 pandemic. If you'd like to present, please add your name and the proposed topic to the list on the talk page.
  • Also, I'd like to start a conversation about how we should be sharing responsibility for the user group going forward. I'd love to get some help when it comes to organizing things and I'm convinced that we can achieve more if a couple of people helped with coordinating stuff.
  • Finally, the Wikimedia Foundation has asked me to spread the word about their latest survey: Universal Code of Conduct Survey. The goal is to create a safer environment on Wikimedia projects and the Foundation gathers feedback prior to coming up with a first draft.

Hope to see you at the Zoom meeting in September!

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 18:45, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

I'm also inviting you to share some information about yourself and your photography work with other members of the user group on our new membership list:

I hope you're well during these difficult times. All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 15:50, 23 September 2020 (UTC)

Next Commons Photographers meeting featuring large format photographer Ben Horne

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I'm happy to invite you to our next virtual meeting on Saturday, March 20, at the usual time. As I mentioned during our last get-together, I'd like to invite external guests every now and then, given that it seems good to expand our view and learn something from someone outside our community.

Our first external guest, Ben Horne, will talk about large format wilderness photography, followed by a question-and-answer session. Ben is maybe one of best known contemporary large format photographers in the United States. On his excursions to national parks, he shoots 8×10 film and talks about his adventures on his YouTube channel which has attracted more than 48,000 followers so far. He is YouTube's first, and longest active landscape photography vlogger and I'm thrilled that he has agreed to join our next meeting and talk about his experiences.

If you're interested in joining this meeting, please sign up on the page below:

Also, don't forget to post your question(s) prior to the meeting on the following page in order to ensure a good and fruitful question-and-answer session:

I'm very much looking forward to this event and I hope you'll be able to join.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:34, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Reminder: Commons Photographers meeting tomorrow

Just a quick reminder: the meeting with large format-photographer Ben Horne will happen tomorrow, Saturday, March 20. FPCBot user message bug

(Copy paste from Village Pump post): If a user gets a notification about a promoted featured picture, and the nomination is not the first attempt, the link in the message will still lead to the page name of the first failed nomination. Your most memorable shot of 2021

Happy New Year! As always at the beginning of the new year, I'm inviting you to share your most memorable shot of the past year. Which of your photos stood out in 2021? Which image created special memories that you'd like to share with others? On behalf of the Commons Photographers User Group I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best for 2022. Warmly, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 03:25, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

Apologies

My apologies for this. Can you please better explain the context of the image in its description to avoid future issues like this? It was an off-season friendly, was it? Were players playing for their former teams in the context of a testimonial (i.e., what was the official match term used)? This should be explained as it could confuse people like it did for me why Steph Houghton would be playing for Arsenal in February 2017 when she was a Man city player. Hopefully that should help any current and future confusions. Cheers. Helper201 (talk) 09:22, 8 January 2022 (UTC)

@Helper201: In terms of explanation for individual file, the file name already says "Arsenal LFC v Kelly Smith All-Stars XI" with the image page description expanding it to say "Arsenal LFC (Red) v Kelly Smith All-Stars XI (Yellow)" so she wasn't playing for Arsenal. That, the uncropped image, and more generally the image category it's in clearly shows both sides on the pitch was wearing Arsenal tops, home kit vs away kit. The match was a special match in honour of Kelly Smith, who was retiring after 3 spells with Arsenal, over 100 caps with England, and widely acknolwedge as one of the best England player cetainly of her generation if not in history. In terms of what to call it, I don't know if there's really any difference between exhibition game and testimonial match. (Out of interest, even if it were a competitive match, a player wearing a kit with a particular crest doesn't necessarily mean they were playing for that club. There was that time in the same year Liverpool wore Yeovil away kit to play against them because Liverpool kit didn't travel with them............) -- KTC (talk) 17:51, 9 January 2022 (UTC)

@MZaplotnik: Thanks for letting me know. I'll take a look as soon as I can tomorrow or the day after. -- KTC (talk) 21:22, 16 August 2022 (UTC)}}
Hello! Maybe set of images, all of which were already promoted on en-wiki, broke the bot? See Commons talk:Featured picture candidates#Dear nominators, please check your FPs after promotion. MZaplotnik(talk) 07:38, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Sorry about that. I can close them manually, but wasn't sure if I should. Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:09, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
Was that the cause? I mean, ideally, that wouldn't break the bot, but if it will, knowing that will mean we can just quickly manually close sets. Adam Cuerden (talk) 23:58, 18 August 2022 (UTC)
@Adam Cuerden: I haven't done anything, so yes since the removal of the set nominations got the bot going again, I'd say that was the cause. -- KTC (talk) 08:26, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Wow, that’s an interesting observation which we must keep in mind for the next time the bot stops working … Thank you all! --Aristeas (talk) 13:39, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

You're invited to provide input…

Question from the CPUG Board

Dear user group member,

I'm writing you to today on behalf of the board of the Commons Photographers User Group. The past year has been a busy one for us. In 2022, we've had more activities than ever before in the history of our group and you'll find an overview on our group's page.

With that being said, 2022 was also a year of learning for the current board members. Most of us hadn't been involved in running the Photographers User Group and we spent quite some time on getting used to our new roles. We all feel it was a steep learning curve.

That's why, at our last board meeting, we decided to ask our members whether they'd be ok with us serving for another year. Extending our board duties to the end of 2023 would allow us to continue the work we've started this year, and to benefit from the knowledge we've built over the past twelve months.

However, in the end, it's up to you and the other members of our group to decide whether such an extension of our board term should be granted. I invite you to voice your opinion on this page:

Commons:Commons Photographers User Group/Board Elections 2022

We'll gather feedback until December 27, and we'll keep you in the loop about the outcomes of this process.

Thanks so much for your ongoing support of our group. I wish you, your family, and your friends all the best.

--Ailura (talk) 12:32, 11 December 2022 (UTC)

Most memorable shot 2022 / Wikimania 2023

Dear member of the Commons Photographers User Group,

I wish you a Happy New Year! As it has been our tradition at the beginning of the new year for a while, we're sharing our most memorable shots of the past year with each other. I invite you to share a picture that is particular meaningful to you and to describe why that's the case. Also, as Wikimania 2023 will be here before we know it (August 16 to 19), please consider adding your thoughts on our planning page, where we gather ideas for how we can make Commons photography more visible than in the years before.

All the best to you, your family, and friends! --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 21:01, 2 January 2023 (UTC)

FeaturedMediaBot troubleshooting

Hi KTC! I'm Mdaniels5757, an admin here. I'm writing because User:FeaturedMediaBot, one of Eatcha's creations, has been down for a year or so. I'm writing because I think it, or one of its predecessors, was hosted on Toolforge, and you are a comaintainer of the tools fscbot, fvcbot, qic, and fpcbot. Would you be willing to either take a look at each of these and see if there is anything that could be useful for restoring FeaturedMediaBot's functionality and/or add me as a comaintainer on any ones you think could be helpful? Thanks, —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 23:35, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi @Mdaniels5757: from what I can tell, the format of COM:FMC (and FSC & FVC before that) is mostly/exactly the same as COM:FPC. From what I can recall, fscbot & fvcbot were simply User:FPCBot modified to work with the FSC and FVC pages, possibly with a few additional modification on top later on. As you can see from its userpage, FPCBot is working off the code hosted on User:Daniel78's github. Even if the codes of fscbot and fvcbot aren't available (I haven't checked on Toolforge), it shouldn't be a problem getting a fresh copy of FPCBot and modify it to work FMC. I can investigate further late on. There is the issue that while I'm the only active maintainer of FPCBot, I don't actually know Python... I'm basically around to keep the lights on, and turn if off and on again if something breaks. I wouldn't be of use if extensive modifiction to the code is required. -- KTC (talk) 22:37, 10 June 2023 (UTC)

Flickypedia soft launch and a huge thank you

Dear fellow Commons photographer,

I hope this message finds you well. As you might already know, the Flickr Foundation has been busy creating a new Flickr-to-Commons bridge (“Flickypedia”) this year. After a successful demo at the GLAM Wiki Conference in Montevideo, the Flickr Foundation team is now inviting all members of the Commons Photographers User Group to be the first to review their alpha, reporting any technical issues or other feedback via the Flickypedia project talk page.

At the same time, this message is an opportunity for me to thank you for your trust and support over the past couple of years. Since 2017, we've grown into being one of the largest user groups in the Wikimedia universe. I've tremendously enjoyed interacting with all of our members when it came to joint photowalks at Wikimanias, virtual Zoom meetings where we covered a wide variety of photography topics, as well as our annual “Most memorable shot of the year”, among many other events. As I'm not running for an official position in our current board election, this will be my last message on behalf of the user group to you. Thanks for all the happy moments we shared together over the years! I hope you'll continue creating free images for the millions of people we serve through Wikipedia and Commons.

All the best, --Frank Schulenburg (talk) 19:36, 9 December 2023 (UTC)

Just a quick reminder that the deadline for submitting your most memorable shot of 2023 is swiftly approaching! As tradition holds, since 2018, we've been sharing our favorite captures from the past year with each other. This year marks the sixth iteration of our beloved "Most Memorable Shot" tradition, and we're excited to see what everyone has to share.

Whether you're a member of the Commons Photographers User Group or not, you're warmly invited to participate. Your unique perspective adds to the richness of our community, and we'd love to see the world through your lens.

So, if you haven't already, take a moment to pick out your most cherished picture of 2023 and share it with us on the designated page. The deadline is February 29th, so don't let time slip away!

Let's keep this wonderful tradition alive and celebrate the beauty and diversity of our collective experiences through photography.

Looking forward to seeing your memorable shots!

Best regards,
