Rest assured, this is not ~~Sam. M. Webb~~ in the picture but Samuel B. Webb, or Connecticut revolutionary war hero, brigadier general Samuel Blachley Webb, an aide-de-camp to George Washington at one time. That's how Henry Bryan Hall etched letter "B" in cursive in Blachley's signature. Everything goes to the dogs, and NYPL is not an exception because they can't even read cursive nowadays. Code numbers in file names[edit]

@ Armbrust,

thank you for the renamings!

Nevertheless I had preferred to maintain the code numbers comprised in the previous file names (Now, keep them dropped. :)

I ask for renamings relatively often.

In photos taken by myself, I also use such codes, normally the last figures of the number, the photo had on the chip. :They make it easier to identify photos of large serieses, out of which I load up only a few.

And in the co-operation of us wikipedians, I consider it a symbol of respect, to keep the code number used by the uploader, even if the rest of his file name wants correction or other improvement.--Ulamm (talk) 23:52, 13 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, Armbrust. Wieso kann der Name nicht geändert werden? In den von dir zitierten Richtlinien heißt es "If an object or organism was incorrectly identified in the filename (such as calling a Sylvilagus floridanus by the name “File:Sylvilagus audubonii.jpg”), this criterion covers renaming the image." Das trifft doch hier zu. About a recent change[edit]

Hi, you recently renamed my file Argos-logo.png, would you be able to rename it Argos logo.png, I'm not able to do it because during the process , it says that the file name exist, but it was a file that I deleted, the name should be available technically. Misspelled proper nouns[edit]

Hi. In English, proper nouns are capitalized. If I write your name as "armbrust" this is wrong. Renaming guidelines speak clearly about "misspelled proper nouns". Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
To perform file name swaps.
When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Renaming[edit]

Hi,

You denied several renaming request I made, based on the assumption that the files where not part of a set. They actually are : they all come from the federal assembly website, and are taken every new legislature. I would be much easier to have "Alain Berset (2008).jpg, Alain Berset (2015).jpg) than "Alain.berset.08.jpg" or "Ignazio Cassis(2).jpg"

Sorry if it's not really doable, not very familiar with commons procedures…

COM:FR#4 is for two cases generally: (1) Certain complex templates assume that the images used in them will follow a specific naming convention and Wikisource also uses a specific naming convention for the source files they transcribe. (2) Files that form parts of a whole (such as scans from the same book or large images that are divided into smaller portions due to Commons’ upload size restriction) should follow the same naming convention so that they appear together, in order, in categories and lists. City of Lincoln Nebraska flag 2022 permission evidence[edit]

Hi!

I see that you've flagged this file image here:...

File:City_of_Lincoln_Nebraska_flag_2022.png

...for deletion, because it is missing evidence for permission. It's been a while since I've had to go down this road, so please bear with me. According to the city website -- referenced on the file page, it states that:

"In the interest of fostering civic pride, the colors, design and theme of the City Flag of Lincoln may be creatively and enthusiastically promoted as an open-source design to be embraced throughout our City."... along with free hi-res image download links provided for such use.

...so... with the design being open source -- a.k.a. free to use, what kind of licensing permissions is needed / being looked for in this situation? If the above quoted line does not pass muster, then I would assume that the Mayor's office would need to email Wikimedia with a declaration of such free use?

It's a good question that I was looking at also. I'm interpreting it as the citizens of the city embracing the design of the new flag as opposed to the old one, since most in the city didn't even know what the old one looked like (City Councilmen couldn't even find a place to buy one)... but then again, this is just my interpretation.

Wagens op het strand[edit]

Hi Armbrust. You declined this rename request [1]. This is not a 'wagen', but a 'kar'. A 'kar' has two wheels and a 'wagen' mostly four wheels. So that's typically Dutch. In Dutch this mistake is made often too. It explicitly says "Files that have been awarded a special status like Commons Featured Picture, Commons Quality Image, or similar status on another Wikimedia project.", and this image is featured on the English Wikipedia.
