Livery Stable

Hi. Thanks for uploading a new version of the Livery Stable Blues cover. However you uploaded a later printing with lyrics over a scan of a first edition without lyrics. Nothing wrong with having both versions, but note they arent' the same. I therefore reverted your upload over my scan at File:Livery00.jpg, and reuploaded the version with lyrics at File:LiveryStableBluesWithLyricsCover.jpg. You've probably seen, but I've set up an MVR. I like both images: The one you suggest is higher quality, but a candid shot of someone doing their job is has its own appeal. I do think your suggestion has FP potential mine doesn't, and I'll be nominating it there. Adam Cuerden (talk) 12:26, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

I agree, both are clearly valuable images of the person. Thanks for the notification. Jafeluv (talk) 12:35, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

Your Flickr uploads

Hello Jafeluv!

Thanks a lot for your contributions! Thank you for transferring images from Flickr to Commons! Two hints ahead:

  • Always upload the highest resolution of a photograph that is available on flickr
  • You can use this tool for your flickr uploads. It makes the hole procedure much easier and faster for you!

Thank you for your support! Greets, High Contrast (talk) 10:29, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Ac.redoubt.jpg

Hi, I really don't understand the point of your message. When I check, i read (I wear my glasses so I'm sure of what I'm reading...):

Author=Original uploader was Adam Carr at en.wikipedia and

Permission=PD-USGOV-MILITARY-ARMY.

I really wonder what you're looking for. Thank you. Gato76680 (talk) 07:01, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Hi! It means that there's no indication of the original source. Adam Carr uploaded the image to Wikipedia, but he is not the original author (ie. the person who originally created the image). Without knowing where the image comes from there's really no way to verify the copyright status of the image. For a more detailed explanation, see the licensing policy. Does this answer your question? Jafeluv (talk) 07:43, 19 May 2010 (UTC)

Opening bars of Tomb Raider theme.svg and First music notes of the first Tomb Raider.png

OK, do it, I don't mind, I believed it is suggestive for the entire series just like a logo with the game would be. These are the most important notes of the entire series, anyone can recognize them, those notes are the Tomb Raider trademark, not intended for people that already know the series but for those that wants to get the first contact with the series. We can't upload any Tomb Raider song on wikipedia, we can't upload those 4 musical notes, we can't suggest how Lara sounds like, maybe it's not meant for wikipedia. I know these politics and I saw samples from all kind of copyrighted songs that stay in peace on wikipedia (I believe this is the way, music can't be suggested without showing or playing it). I believe we should do the same thing with this file, it's a sample, that could not be expressed in another way or shape. Some time ago, when I made this file, I thought of something else, and there, is no copyright infringement by it, to take any musical note of the musical sheet and to raise them one tone, to remake that solo oboe tune that once was on wikipedia and no longer is, luckily it shall still sound like Tomb Raider music. Do whatever you want, I'm tired of fighting for these Sol-La-Fa-Sol notes, few people care about theoretic part of music, but they enjoy music a lot. I believe that in the future there will be on wikipedia lot of smaterials with music from videogames. Good luck! --TudorTulok (talk) 10:20, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I didn't mean that they could not be used on Wikipedia. They probably can, but under fair use. However, Commons is strictly for freely licensed media so any fair use material should be uploaded locally to Wikipedia. Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 10:23, 5 June 2010 (UTC)

Music notes

See for example US copyright law: In no case does copyright protection for an original work of authorship extend to any idea, procedure, process, system, method of operation, concept, principle, or discovery, regardless of the form in which it is described, explained, illustrated, or embodied in such work. Belgrano (talk) 16:42, 6 June 2010 (UTC)

A sheet music would fall into the definition of "method of operation": it's merely a series of instructions that describe the way the copyrighted product is generated. As an "image", it's an specialized languaje, and its content is just a list of universal concepts placed toguether. Re, Re, Fa, Sol, Si, La, etc; there's nothing creative in the order in which notes are listed. It's the result, the sounds generated by this "code", which is unique and creative and may receive copyright protection. Belgrano (talk) 00:23, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
"musical works, including any accompanying words" is meant to say that both the instrumental music and the lyrics or a song (in the genres and cases where a song has lyrics) may have copyright protection. It isn't about the sheet music, and when I talked about the "language" I was meaning the full concept, not simply the natural languages. But if you want to make an analogy: in natural languajes characters are ineligible for copyright, and neither are words alone (even made-up words, such as names of fictional characters) or gramatical rules. Only the final product (a literary work) can be copyrighted, not the basic tools employed to design it. Same with music: the sheet music is not a product that exists independently from the song, it's merely a representation of abstract concepts that explain how does the song "works". Belgrano (talk) 18:24, 7 June 2010 (UTC)

Hey there, I saw your confirmation of the results at the above FP nomination. I had done it initially, but then noticed that the 1 support vote was not the nominator, which would make it ineligible for early closure. Is this correct? I'm still a bit new to the FPC process. Jujutacular T · C 19:50, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Hmm, you're correct. I've reverted. The bot probably didn't recognize that {{Pour}} is the same as {{Support}} and closed it early. I need to start trusting it less, I guess :) Jafeluv (talk) 20:38, 17 June 2010 (UTC)

Oh, God, what a mess! Can you move it by creating a page for a new user, if possible? And either way, by all means, delete that whole thing. I read how to request a "speedy deletion", but don't even know where one is supposed to type the request! The talk page? The edit summary? Somewhere on the page itself that you see, and if so where? Do you see how limited here I am about information? I made a Welcome Banner for User:JazminMillion in the English Wikipedia, and hoped I was doing the same here. He's a newcomer to Wikipedia and Commons who is an outstanding photographer. Please, help! I have NEVER understood how Wikimedia Commons worked. Appeals for help for a couple of years here never helped-- except for two well-meaning people here who have given me some info, but they assume I know far more than I do about the use of computers, and so some instructions just went over my head! I grew up without computers- I was poor and I'm older than the computer generation. In the en.Wikipedia someone explained how to upload photos here-- (sad that I had to ask THERE, instead of here)! I've been editing since 2007 with this user name, and if you take a look you'll most of my photo uploads listed on that userpage there: [1]. I hoped to find someone here who might give him the information needed and sort of mentor him. Could/would you consider it? I still don't even know how to create Categories here despite all my uploads, and I'd thought to ask User:Herbythyme who did help me somewhat. I was going to ask him to look after Jazmin, but I already dumped the last new person interested in working with us in his lap. Can you help at the least in deleting that error page of mine?--Leahtwosaints (talk) 14:31, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Niin miksi olet pyytänyt poistaa kyseien kuvan? D100a (talk) 07:17, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Julkisellakaan paikalla otettua kuvaa ei saa Suomessa julkaista ilman kohteen lupaa ellei kyseessä ole julkisuuden henkilö. (Ks. tiedostojen käyttösäännöt) Jafeluv (talk) 07:25, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Jafeluv (talk) 07:43, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Mitä mieltä olet asiasta..D100a (talk) 19:55, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Öö, mistä asiasta? Tuohon on näköjään onnistuttu sotkemaan kaikki mahdolliset asiat sekaisin kuvan laadusta ja pakolaisten vainoamisesta lähtien. Onnea vain sille ylläpitäjälle joka tuosta yrittää joskus vetää jotain johtopäätöksiä :) Jafeluv (talk) 20:01, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Your Deletion Does Not Apply

Greetings! Thank you for all the good work that you are doing in the name of this community. You have deleted GurdjieffJMK.jpg and JMKT_on_Gurdjieff_2009.svg, I would like to know why, since I have done that svg myself with my own hands and then I have retouched digitally also with my own hands, there have been evenly three different versions of it. I acknowledge your the importance to follow-up policies and procedures; however, I think you could be more careful, or at least wait for an arbitration about the issue. So, I am asking you to undo you deletion as soon as you can. Thank you for your cooperation on this regard. JohnManuel (talk) 23:06, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi! The reason for the deletion was that the svg drawings seem to be based on this photo, which makes them derivative works. The original work's copyright applies also to derivative works, so I'm afraid your svg drawings can be released under a free license only if the original photo was either also licensed under such a license, or if its copyright has already expired. I assume you didn't take the original photo yourself? It didn't seem to be freely licensed from what I could find, and that's why the files in question were deleted. I can of course restore the files if you can provide evidence that the original photo is available under a suitable license. Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 23:20, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

I added a note in the DR that the article has been deleted. Someone will get to it soon enough, I think :) Jafeluv (talk) 13:41, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

If I may... my experience with this editor is that there is essentially no way to make him understand something that he believes he knows the meaning of. Numerous people tried on en.wiki, and it just led to acrimony. It really doesn't matter how logical or correct or plain-spoken your explanation is, it just won't take. I don't know why that is, but that's my observation. My advice is: don't let him suck you into the void, it's not worth it. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 00:36, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. I intend to follow it. Jafeluv (talk) 09:09, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Wasn't 'wrong'.

Thanks. http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Charter_08's link is directly to the page I edited that you deleted. So my edit was to the correct page. If something is 'wrong, it's that page/the template it uses; will you be fixing that? If the page where such notes are expected has moved, a redirect is appropriate, no? I'll go I fixed my text to make sense given your move; I appreciate the effort but my comment doesn't didn't make sense where you put it. I'm watching here for any reply. --Elvey (talk) 07:12, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

If you meant to post on an empty page instead of a noticeboard, then I guess it wasn't wrong :) The page hasn't moved anywhere, no (your post was the first edit on that page), but it seems that the person who copied the template to Wikisource omitted a prefix in the link for some reasn. That has been fixed now. Jafeluv (talk) 08:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

I was about to do the tidy up following the replace, however, it is not duplicate (very very slightly larger). <shrug>  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:46, 20 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi. The page was deleted because it falls under the scope of our project. Commons hosts images and other media for educational purposes, as well as galleries, categories and other pages for the organization of said media. Mental health recovery was outside of that scope since it's a text article and not related to collecting and organizing educational media. I hope this answers to your question. B8_projetos.jpg

Hello. How are you? I received the information that the file B8_projetos.jpg was deleted due to copyright violation. Actually, I was the one responsible for developing this logo and I am a member of this Organization. That is why we decided to upload it. Please, could you inform what should I do in order to have the file back? Thank you very much for your attention, --Mdvmartino (talk) 15:43, 8 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi! Okay, in this case the permission would need to be confirmed through OTRS by sending an e-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org from an address linked to the organization, and explaining that you have the right to license the file under a free license. If you have access to the organization's website, another way for you to confirm the license would be adding a text somewhere on the site that the logo has been released into the public domain (or another free license of your choice), and linking that page from the file description page. Either way, B8_projetos.jpg can be undeleted once the permission has been confirmed. Let me know if you have questions regarding this and I'll try to help out. Sami child.jpg

Hi Jafeluv, as you are a fi-native speaker, could you take a look at File:Sami child.jpg, whether this image might already be PD in Finnland (being shot in 1923). I also strongly doubt the authorship claim of the blog. Eventually the finnish description has the real name of the photographer. Thanks. --Túrelio (talk) 08:05, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi! That blog page crashes my Firefox every time I open it, so I can't tell what it says there. The description on the file page is actually in Norwegian, I think. (It says "Sami boy Klas Andersson from Frosteviken, Strömsund, Jämtland, 1923.") Pre-1966 Finnish photographs are in the public domain per {{PD-Finland50}}, but Strömsund is in Sweden and {{PD-Sweden-photo}} requires the photographer to have died before 1944. Jafeluv (talk) 08:25, 24 March 2011 (UTC)
Oops, sorry for the misidentification of language. Thanks for the evaluation. --Túrelio (talk) 08:29, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Asiaa kahdesta kuvasta

Hei! Kuvan keskustelusivulla esittämieni linkkien lisäksi kuva löytyy pienempänä versiona esim. sivulta [2], jossa kuvan alla lukee "Channel 4" (vahvistaa epäilyäni, että kyseessä on nimenomaan promokuva, jonka oikeudet kuuluvat Channel 4 -kanavalle). Nironen (talk) 15:48, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Molemmat poistettu, kiitos ilmoituksesta. Jälkimmäinen oli näköjään kopioitu Richard Lynnin omilta sivuilta. Jafeluv (talk) 16:13, 7 April 2011 (UTC)

Diet spam

Not got too much time so will post here and point a couple of other folk to it :)

You & I interacted with either this user or the next one mentioned yesterday. The approach seemed to be to upload ordinary images with links to various "diet" pages on the internet. If they were from those pages they were copyvios, if not they were spamming using them. I blocked another one for basically the same behaviour. They are probably using open proxies as I found the issue from an IP edit from a proxy yesterday. Given the nature of spammers I doubt these are the only users involved. About the user Bokpasa and edit-warring.

Hello,

I recongnise that it seems like if it was an edit-warring, but the fact is that this user (banned from fr.WP and es.WP for vandalism and extreme PoV and recently unblocked from en.WP after beign blocked many times for Vandalism [3][4][5], is starting to make some "strange" changes by replacing the existing categories, which are common to all countries, to news ones (that he creates) (example), and by removing any reference to Morocco in many files (examples : [6], [7]).

I had the intention to ask the admin Ecemaml to help me, since he already tried to "discuss" with Bokpasa before [8] (without success, apparently). I'll do that soon, maybe this time it will be fine?

Regards.

However, I don't see how edits like this can be considered vandalism or extreme PoV -- taking into account that we have a lot of "Middle ages in X" categories, not all of which were created by Bokpasa. At the very least you should provide an edit summary when reverting an edit like that and explain why you feel the change was unhelpful. I agree asking for Ecemaml to take a look at the situation might be a good idea. Jafeluv (talk) 22:15, 6 May 2011 (UTC)
Hello,
As you can see, he replaces "History of Morocco" by "Middle ages in Morocco", but doesn't change the other "History of X" categories, and that is a part of a long history that made him being banned from other Wikis : He considers that Morocco didn't exist before 1666 (the rise of the Alaouite dynasty), and then that the category "History of Morocco" should only be used for post-1666 related files, then he modifies files descriptions (and sometimes the whole files) according to his conceptualization of the facts! Maybe that can be discussed, but anybody will doubt of the good faith of such edits by a person banned on WP's for "multiple vandalisms on Morocco-related articles"! Maybe I'm acting so since I'm Moroccan, that's why I rarely intervene when I feel that my edit can be considered as non-neutral, but this time I don't think so.
Thanks, btw :)

About Cnva11d article

The article is intended to be for a school project and also informative. It has geographical conotations and it is structured in teams of people everyone showing their view on the actual position countries around the world have.
Why does the page keep getting deleted and what can i do about it?

Regards,
Radurock (talk) 17:15, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

The page was deleted because it was out of the scope of the project, which is collecting and organizing educational media. If you want a webpage for your school project you can probably ask for the school to provide you with one. Regards, Jafeluv (talk) 17:19, 17 May 2011 (UTC)

Revert

The reason I reverted the closure was that we were waiting for a bureaucrat to close the procedure, not for Docu. Please make sure you add the request to the archive now you removed it from the request pages. Jcb (talk) 16:05, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

I know the reason why you reverted, and I disagree with it. There was nothing left for a bureaucrat to do there, unless you expect them to forcefully re-admin a user who had already resigned themself. Also, the rollback tool is supposed to be used on vandal edits only as I'm sure you're well aware. Jafeluv (talk) 16:13, 1 June 2011 (UTC)

Hello. When you move a new page, please mark it as patrolled before you move it -- otherwise, as far as I know, the only way to get it off the patrol log is to recreate it, mark it as patrolled, and delete it again, which is, of course, a nuisance. Thanks,      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 22:36, 15 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi. Sure, I'll keep that in mind. I think another way to do it is changing the page name to the new target in the URL (without changing the rcid and other parameters) and clicking the patrol link on the target page. In any case, better to patrol it first to avoid such a situation. Jafeluv (talk) 06:59, 16 June 2011 (UTC)
OK, thanks. Maybe I've learned something -- I'll try your way the next time I run across an unpatrolled page that needs moving.      Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 12:12, 16 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi, Jafeluv. I write articles on historical subjects and all the authors of things and photos on my images died a long time ago. In the case of ТКУ 33.jpg I don't really thought and made a mistake, because I had in mind that died the author of the saber, but not a collector, who sent me a photo with his saber. Please, give me time, I'll again seek all my uploaded images and correct description and license. In case, if again I am wrong - please, inform me about it. Ok, let me know if you need any help. As I said I'll take a look later and see what can be done. Jafeluv (talk) 13:29, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
By the way, if you have permission from the photographer to use the image, please ask them to send an email to OTRS (also available in Russian) so that the license can be verified. Jafeluv (talk) 13:33, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
Yes, Jafeluv, help me, please protect all the rest of my images. I wrote a lot of articles on the historical theme, one of them is now nominated for GOOD ARTICLE. If all of my images will be deleted - I had to leave WIKI, because I can't continue to work.--Anford (talk) 14:15, 15 February 2012 (UTC)
Oh, don't worry about it so much -- some will need to be deleted, others can probably be used with another license. It happens to everyone, nobody can be expected to know all the details of copyright law when they first start contributing. I'll take a look at the images and see what I can do :) Jafeluv (talk) 14:49, 15 February 2012 (UTC)

Moi! En jaksa käydä muodollisia prosesseja läpi. Ehdotan, että harkitset eston antamista käyttäjälle User:WPK. Perustelut: uusien kuvien lataaminen vanhojen päälle väärin tiedoin ja väärillä lisensseillä, muokkaussotiminen kuvien lataamisessa, tekijänoikeuksista piittamattomuus. Tällainen käyttäjä ei tuo mitään hyvää projektille vaan päinvastoin aiheuttaa haittoja sekä Commonsissa että niissä Wikipedioissa, joissa WPK:n muuttamia kuvia käytetään. I believe User:Rd232 was in good standing, and requested a block for reasons of their own. Did you mean to imply the block showed they were in bad standing? Geo Swan (talk) 08:57, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

Hi! Actually I was talking about Pieter Kuiper and Saibo. I noticed that Rd232 was self-blocked so that doesn't really matter much (they can reverse the block themself at any time should they wish to comment in the RFA). Jafeluv (talk) 10:26, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
Hmm, now that I look closer, it looks like Saibo was self-blocked as well... That's something I missed. Jafeluv (talk) 10:29, 15 May 2013 (UTC)

Comment

In this comment you said I was "vehemently" opposed to restoring administrator privileges to Jcb.

I think it is an unfortunate phenomenon we see on the WMF projects. Some discussions acquire a certain momentum, and people either skip reading the minority positions, or skip reading the minority positions and actually get angry at those who voiced the minority positions.

I am not usually a betting man, but I strongly suspect that even though you have spent a considerable effort implying I am at fault you have not made a meaningful effort to understand the breaches in Jcb's behaviour that triggered my concerns. Geo Swan (talk) 13:50, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

I find it strange that you take offense to words like "vehemently" while at the same time throwing around baseless and frankly insulting insinuations of offwiki collusion on IRC. [10] Jafeluv (talk) 15:15, 16 May 2013 (UTC)
I think if you go back, and read the discussion more closely, you will recognize there was some off-commons discussion of Jcb's re-administratorship. I was assured it was of a passing and trivial nature. And I left a thank you for that reassurance. [11] Ideally, in the interests of open-ness and transparency, there should be no off-commons discussion, at least none that isn't explicitly and meaningfully acknowledged on-commons. I think my reminder of this was an important point, and I stand by it.
My comments about IRC discussions were not therefore "baseless".
Some people have hides like rhinos, and don't seem to notice slights, yet never dish out any slights themselves; Other people don't notice slights, but are pretty bad about dishing out slights. Others are thin-skinned, but nevertheless try to make sure they do not respond-in-kind. Finally, there are individuals who are both thin-skinned as to whether they are being attacked, who, ironically, also spin off a lot of insults.
I'd like to be in the first group. But I am sensitive -- thin-skinned. Given that I am thin-skinned I aim to be in that third group.
You are, I believe the last hold out, the last person to continue to suggest that I am at fault for leaving the neutrally written heads-up. Your last position seems to be that even though the heads-up was neutrally written, I was somehow uniquely disqualified from sending it.
Since you can't offer a meaningful explanation as to why you continue to suggest I am at fault, tell me, do you think this should affect how seriously I should take your feelings I am insulting you?
For the record, I don't agree that I singled you out as someone who colluded off-commons. My suggestions were addressed to all of Jcb's supporters
If, upon consideration, you decide you too are thin-skinned, I would encourage you to aim to be in the third group -- thin-skinned individuals, who don't respond in kind -- rather than being a thin-skinned person who, ironically, explicitly states or implies a lot of accusations against others. Geo Swan (talk) 13:17, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Well, you were responding to my comment, which is why I assumed you were referring to me, but maybe that was just a misunderstanding. I certainly haven't discussed the RFA anywhere off-wiki, and can't really see why anyone would think that.
I do believe people should try to avoid acting as "neutral" parties in issues where they have strong opinions. In retrospect, considering I had opined in the RFA, I should probably have taken my own advice and left it to uninvolved people to decide whether the notifications were appropriate. Consensus at AN seems to be leaning on the side that you did nothing wrong, and if that's the result I have no problem with that.
If my comments have come off more aggressive than they should have been, I apologize. Personalizing the issue was never my intention. Jafeluv (talk) 12:11, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
  • Yes, I did take your comments as a personal reflection on my judgment, character, motives, etc.
Since you didn't mention having done so, I am going to assume that you still haven't made a meaningful effort to understand what concerns me about restoring Jcb's administrator privileges. Given a choice I would far rather have you try to reach an informed conclusion about my concerns -- instead of offering me the limited apology above.
I am going to differ on your interpretation that the AN discussion was "leaning" towards supporting my action. It seems to me you were the sole hold-out who implied I was at fault.
I've done my very best to understand your position -- and I still don't understand it.
I mentioned my essay, w:User:Geo Swan/opinions/on apologies. Based on your apology, I am going to assume you didn't read it.
Over on en.wiki, there is a policy requiring contributors there to write from a neutral point of view. Since there is considerable overlap in the commons and en.wiki communities I suggest your position on the impossibility of drafting a neutral comment is a lonely minority position.
Nevertheless, if we both find ourselves participating in some future discussion, I will do my best to assume I can trust you to try to be fair in that discussion. Geo Swan (talk) 14:41, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
I've struck "leaning" above.
Hmm, I can't seem to find where you linked to your essay. Was it in the RFA or at AN? In any case you're correct that I hadn't seen it. (Not that it matters that much since you've linked to it now; just curious where I've missed it.) Jafeluv (talk) 17:24, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

In any case. The RFA was closed and it's clear to everyone that the notifications did not skew the result towards opposition, and regardless of the result everyone seems to agree that there was no problem in posting the notifications once a neutral wording had been agreed on. Looking at the AN discussion now it looks like I made a mountain out of a particularly harmless molehill and got needlessly agitated when asked to defend my position. What really leaves a bad taste in my mouth is that you're now left with the impression that I'm an unreasonable person who on top of that also likes to attack others who disagree with them. If I bump into you in another discussion at some point, I'll make sure to try to prove that impression wrong. Jafeluv (talk) 22:22, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the notification. Jafeluv (talk) 21:23, 9 January 2014 (UTC)

Hi Jafeluv, you put a lot of work into this previously. The DR closed "Kept but fix", meaning if no changes are made to the template, the next deletion may go through for lack of action. What would you think about replacing it with the template you created in 2010. There didn't seem to be any serious objection to it at the time and it seems to follow the previous thinking put forward by Carl on "commercial value". I had another idea, which is not to cite any particular state or case law, rather the series of LoC documents which show that it's possible to make a case for using sound recordings pre-1972. For example LoC Pub 146 has 10 states and various ways to argue for use. From the Forward: "The authors .. examine the laws and court cases that may determine the extent to which non profit institutions may preserve and disseminate pre-1972 recordings." It goes on to say:

Professor Jaszi outlines what he terms “potential defenses for nonprofit institutions.” In these sections, he examines the courses of defense a nonprofit institution might take if accused of unauthorized use of pre-1972 sound recordings. These analyses will be invaluable to all nonprofit institutions working to make historical recordings accessible. However, the legal issues related to dissemination of pre-1972 recordings, and all recordings, are complex. Having these analyses of potential legal defenses is useful, but the mere need to consider “potential defenses” has a chilling effect on all institutions without the legal resources and wherewithal to undertake legal risks.

There are a total of 7 LoC documents that discuss it which can be linked from the template. -- Green Cardamom (talk) 20:28, 6 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi, and sorry for the delayed response. The only consensus on that issue for as long as I can remember has been that "somebody should do something" :P The possible defenses for non-profit institutions could be useful for individual wiki projects that use the recordings as non-free content, but I don't think it necessary applies to Commons. We're only allowed to host content that can be used by anyone for any purpose, including commercially. So even if it would be legally defensible for a non-profit institution to use such recordings, it's a different situation entirely if we're publishing them as public domain and indicating that they're free for anyone to use for commercial purposes, right? Jafeluv (talk) 09:29, 10 February 2014 (UTC)
Yes you're right. I guess one (many) solutions is handle it on the project side as non free content. What would you think about replacing the current template with one you made earlier that incorporates the "commercial value" idea advocated by Carl? That seems to be pretty key though still nebulous on how to define, at least it could be there for discussion. -- Green Cardamom (talk) 01:54, 14 February 2014 (UTC)

It seems that no-one has visited 'permissions-fi' for a rather long time. You seem to have access to it. Can you take a look into it? Kruusamägi (talk) 18:14, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Sure, I'll see what I can do. Jafeluv (talk) 09:15, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

File:Fiwp Viikon kilpailu 2013-44.svg

Moi! Voisiko tiedoston File:Fiwp Viikon kilpailu 2013-44.svg palauttaa?

Kehtaatko itse laittaa noihin PD-tagin? Kyseessä on automaattisen tekoälyn (botti) luoma yksinkertainen kaavio.

Jafeluv (talk) 00:55, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
Hienoa. Mukavaa kun on frendejä korkeilla paikoilla, niin asiat sujuvat eikä tarvitse jaaritella englanniksi jonkun satunnaisen ylipeikon kanssa :) --Pxos (talk) 04:24, 9 March 2014 (UTC)

Poistatko [12], koska kyseessä oleva valokuva ei olekkaan vapaasti käytettävissä oleva. Terv. Ville Siliämaa (talk) 11:46, 14 April 2014 (UTC)

✓ Tehty. Jafeluv (talk) 18:40, 14 April 2014 (UTC)
tämän voisi poistaa samalla perusteella. --Zache (talk) 19:44, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
Tämä Tuntemattoman sotilaan stillkuva on edelleen tekijänoikeussuojan alainen. Kuva on todennäköisesti Tenhovaaran, sillä latauslinkissä lukee Tenho, tosin elokuvan tiedoissa on kaksi muuta nimeä, mahdollisesti olivat Tenhovaaran valokuvaajia. --Abc10 (talk) 20:14, 15 April 2014 (UTC)
--Abc10 (talk) 20:19, 15 April 2014 (UTC)

Loin listan nyt noista poistettavista kuvista User:Ville Siliämaa/poistettavat. Pahoittelen, että itsellä on tullut useimmissa tapauksissa tulkintavirhe, että kuvan voisi ladata vapaasti. --Ville Siliämaa (talk) 08:24, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Kaikki poistettu. Muutaman tallensin paikallisesti fi.wikiin sitaattikuvina. Jafeluv (talk) 19:03, 16 April 2014 (UTC)
Kiitos paljon sinulle.

RfC on the scope of file renaming criterion 2

Pursuant to the closing of the RFC "Proposed overhaul of the "Which files should be renamed?" section", a second RfC has been opened at Commons:Requests for comment/File renaming criterion 2 specifically to address the scope of criterion 2, which currently reads "To change from a completely meaningless name to a name that describes what the image displays." Since you participated in the initial discussion, I am notifying you of the follow-up RfC.

Please note that I fully anticipate that the first few days will see a number of additional options proposed, so it may be a good idea to check back periodically on the RfC.

Thank you. Sven Manguard Wha? 01:43, 25 July 2014 (UTC)
