If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

General/Flag Ranks Images

I had a quick question on the U.S. O-10,9, and 8 rank images for you. I noticed that in 2017 you added the bar to the image, which replaced the image with just the stars. Looking through DoD images, it seems that while the bar is used on some rank insignia, the vast majority just use the stars, with the bar either being non-existent or the bar being hidden. Is there a way to resurrect the image of just the stars, without the bar, as the primary image, while still keeping the image of the stars with the bar for more specialized use? Garuda28 (talk) 04:15, 4 November 2019 (UTC)

You can download the old revisions and upload them under a new name. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 08:00, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Moving of some files warrant discussions prior to moves, and good documentation

I have returned File:Coat of arms of Serbia and Montenegro.svg to its pre-existing name. Its use would seem to indicate that it was a more prevailing name, and recording its use across all the wikis, rather than solely thinking of the name in the context of Commons. It is one of those images that we probably should have a consultative approach to renaming where we can reach a consensus prior to moving (and having that within the summary), rather than a single person's thoughts, especially as there are sensitivities in names in the geopolitical arena.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:59, 27 November 2019 (UTC)

Counter Vandalism Unit

Hi Illegitimate Barrister,

You now have the Patroller right and may call yourself a patroller! Please take a moment to read the updated Commons:Patrol to learn how Patrolling works and how we use it to fight vandalism.

As you know already, the patrolling functionality is enabled for all edits, not just for new-page creations. This enables us to keep track of, for example, edits made by anonymous users here on Commons.

We could use your help at the Counter Vandalism Unit. For example by patrolling an Anonymous-edits checklist and checking a day-part.

If you have any questions please leave a message on the CVU talkpage or ask for help on IRC in #wikimedia-commons.

Moving .svg files of Macedonian municipalities

Hi, could you give me reason why you move .svg files of maps of the Macedonian municipalities including new name of the country. They are not overlapping with any name of the municipality in any other country? Why they need to include new name of the country? Also, did you plan to do this with all municipalities in all countries? --Ehrlich91 (talk) 08:55, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

It makes it easier for editors to see which country the flag's from at one simple glance without having to do any extra researching (for those who might not be familiar with the country). Is there something wrong with the new name of the country? – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 09:03, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
@Illegitimate Barrister: Ok, that is valid argument, but could you please answer me, if you plan to do this on all names of maps of all municipalities? Otherwise, I would think that this is done on purpose. --Ehrlich91 (talk) 09:31, 16 December 2019 (UTC)
I'm doing it for other countries as well, if that's what you mean. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 14:02, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Hi, I saw you moved the above file. Could you explain why it met the criteria for renaming? This file was uploaded 14 years ago, and is used on several pages. While I am not concerned about its use on Wikimedia projects, since InstantCommons extension follows file redirects. But its use broke on external sites, since redirects are not followed when hotlinking. Masum Reza📞 17:58, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Ok, it's not just about this file. You have recently moved several files without any explanation whatsoever, contrary to file renaming policy. I demand an explanation, or else I will have to bring this up on COM:ANU. I am extremely concerned about your use of the file mover right. Old, highly used files are extremely sensitive. Masum Reza📞 18:07, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Proper capitalization. Shouldn't be capitalized since not proper noun. Creates redirect in place anyway. Redirects appear fine on my end. Also threatening people is bad decorum. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 20:01, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
The discussion isn't over yet. Please do not archive it without even letting me see it first. As I said, moving files break hotlinking. We don't just serve as a image hosting repository to Wikimedia projects but also of external sites. I am extremely concerned about the old files, who knows how many websites are using them. In fact, unindexed websites won't even appear in Google search results. So it would be hard to find them on the internet. You should not rename files just to have proper capitalization. The file renaming policy explicitly forbids renaming of files in such cases. Apologies for my harsh tone and if you feel threatened. I actually read through the file renaming policy thoroughly and I couldn't find the correct criteria you were using to rename those files. I am a new file mover, you see. Just wanted to know if I have missed something. I am looking forward to your response in accordance with the file renaming policy. Thanks. Masum Reza📞 21:12, 16 January 2020 (UTC)
I'll hold off on further such moves for now in light of your concerns. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 23:32, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply. You said, "for now", which means you intend to stop temporarily. Thanks for uploading File:George W. Bush, c. 1978.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:George W. Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

I am especially doubtful about the secondary source, especially when during a mass-shooting-critical incident where all sort of police agencies are involved:who knows if these images are taken by state university or college police departments (which are copyrighted per Template:PD-FLGov)? Creation request

Please create File:Flag of United Arab Republic (Syria 1958-1961, Egypt 1958-1971).svg from this flag File:Flag of Syria.svg to match with File:Coat of arms of United Arab Republic (Syria 1958-1961, Egypt 1958-1971).svg for historical uses. ColorfulSmoke (talk) 02:47, 23 January 2021 (UTC)

Same goes with File:Flag of Libya (1951–1969).svg -> File:Flag of Libya.svg and File:Flag of North Vietnam (1955–1976).svg -> File:Flag of Vietnam.svg ColorfulSmoke (talk) 04:44, 26 January 2021 (UTC)

How do i create SVG files? ColorfulSmoke (talk) 12:31, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
In this case, no need to make one, since one is already made you can just download it and reupload it under a different name. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 15:12, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
Should the title File:Flag of the United Arab Republic (1958–1971).svg be File:Flag of Egypt (1958-1971); Flag of Syria (1958-1961).svg this was the same case with Iraqi and Syrian flags in 1963. Both Egypt-Syria in 1958 and Iraq-Syria in 1963 used to have the same flags. ((File:Flag of Iraq (1963–1991); Flag of Syria (1963–1972).svg)) ColorfulSmoke (talk) 16:29, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
Weren't they part of the same country during this period? That's why I worded it as that; keep the name short and simple. Iraq and Syria were two separate countries at the time so that's why the name is like that in that instance. – Illegitimate Barrister (talkcontribs), 01:39, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

We need your feedback!

int:Hello. Apologies if this message is not in your native language: please feel free to respond in the language of your choice. Int:Feedback-thanks-title

I am writing to you because we are looking for feedback for a new Wikimedia Foundation project, Structured Data Across Wikimedia (SDAW). SDAW is a grant-funded programme that will explore ways to structure content on wikitext pages in a way that will be machine-recognizable and -relatable, in order to make reading, editing, and searching easier and more accessible across projects and on the Internet. We are now focusing on designing and building image suggestion features for experienced users.

We have some questions to ask you about your experience with uploading images here on Wikimedia Commons and then adding them to Wikipedia. You can answer these questions on a specific feedback page on Mediawiki, where we will gather feedback. As I said, these questions are in English, but your answers do not need to be in English! You can also answer in your own language, if you feel more comfortable.

Once the collecting of feedback will be over, we will sum it up and share with you a summary, along with updated mocks that will incorporate your inputs.

Also, if you want to keep in touch with us or you want to know more about the project, you can subscribe to our newsletter.

Hope to hear from you soon! -- Sannita (WMF) (talk to me!) 09:56, 2 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi, I think it should be moved to File:Flag of South Korea (1949-1997).svg. As Tcfc2349 said in File talk:Flag of South Korea (1984–1997).svg 2 years ago, the design of the flag was not changed in 1984. You may see p.6 of this pdf [2]. Actually the construction is same as the current one. On the contrary, File:Flag of South Korea (1949–1984).svg does not match the construction. --Mike Rohsopht ([[User talk:Mike Rohsopht|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 11:40, 13 January 2022 (UTC)

File:Seal of New Orleans, Louisiana.png

Hello. I notice that you uploaded a different version of File:Seal of New Orleans, Louisiana.png over the existing file. It looks to me very much to not be the 1938 version, but a rather recent redesign from 2018. The source link you provided gives the image only with no information or text. Could you please clarify the situation? I have concerns regarding the date and copyright status of this version. Thank you. Cheers, -- Infrogmation of New Orleans ([[User talk:Infrogmation|int:Talkpagelinktext]]) 20:55, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

OK, the version you uploaded does indeed seem to be the 2018 redesign (eg [3]). I have therefore reverted, and shall delete that version and revert the image description accordingly. I suggest different versions be uploaded separately, with sourcing. Thanks much for your work and attention.
