Move request for image with wrong title[edit]

Hi, I noticed your comment on my talk page regarding the move request for my image. Yes, there are many files with longer names and I'm probably nitpicking/perfectionistic here, but I made a mistake when I gave the file its title. The other file I've uploaded does have a correct title, so I would like the names to be consistent. So could you please rename the file, even if it isn't really necessary? Thank you in advance. --AlexanderVanLoon (talk) 18:47, 26 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Renaming of a file[edit]

Excuse my english, I'm a french user ;-)

Hello, I don't understand why renaming is not possible for this file, Shopwalker.jpg is just a redirect. Where is the problem? Thanks Reptilien.19831209BE1 (talk) 12:28, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Bonjour, ça va? Excusez moi pour la situation.

Since a needlessly pointing redirect exists and prevents filemovers from renaming a file requested by sincere users like your good self, I suggest you to kindly request an admin to help you in this situation. merci, Hindustanilanguage (talk) 15:08, 16 July 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Hi!

There is at least three reasons for renaming of this file:
1) Right russian name is "Ленинградское такси"
2) Leningrad is St.Petersburg now.
3) There is no model number and abbrevaition.

Regards, --Kirill Borisenko (talk) 18:57, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You were rather trolling Herby here, which isn't helpful, particularly when Herby wasn't actually the one who deleted Dmitri's user page. Try to keep a slightly cooler head in future, otherwise, the discussion about what to do to prevent this happening can easily go off-topic. =) Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:25, 1 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

An IP pointed Herby's promotion the site on the userpage where photos by him/her are sold and the discussion centres on whether this user who targeted Dmitri should remove the link or not. Unjustifiably, Herby makes a personal attack on me "...You've an axe to grind..." So you grossly misjudged the situation, but I'm used to all this. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:20, 2 February 2013 (UTC).[reply]

It really did seem you were somewhat disruptively making a point - instead of saying "It is hypocritical of you to...", you instead were arguing for his link to be removed, with the implication - at least somewhat justified - that this was more-or-less equivalent to his argument, turned against him. But that sort of thing gets disruptive fast, and you took it a bit far. Adam Cuerden (talk) 10:46, 2 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I was never as much aggressive as the other user. I, in fact changed my mind during the course of discussion and would've removed my words in the morning even if you hadn't - see my last remark. But the other person is unrepentant about his disparaging comments. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 12:37, 2 February 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Renaming Windows 1.0 logo does not seem to be a solution[edit]

Hi,

I don't think that renaming a winows 1.0 logo is a good idea. Wikipedia editors are not aware of that and display this logo on Windows 1.x/2.x page descriptions. About 10 hours ago I have removed the logo from all the pages linking to it on all available languages (including Portuguese, Georgian, Italian, Romanian, Polish etc.) and when I check the file links now I see that some of the links have been restored. Please add you vote for deleting the image as misleading/inappropriate, this would be much more effective in stopping this fake campaign... -- w:User_Talk:Aaleksanyants

Suggested name was "File:Fantasy Microsoft Windows logo.svg". I felt a more descriptive name such as "Proposed but Unused Logo of Microsoft Windows 1.0.svg" will aptly describe the status of the file. Btw there's no voting the link you've cited. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 18:14, 15 February 2013 (UTC).[reply]

It was not a windows 1.0 logo. There does not seem to be any Windows 1.0 logo that anyone can find. It is something som eone stuck into a blog in 2012. It is a fantasy logo. There is no evidence it was a proposed logo that I know of. Dmcq (talk) 21:20, 15 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Closing COM:AN/U[edit]

Hello Hindustanilanguage, I completely disagree with your closing and comment in my report. I mean also you are not authorized to do this as non admin!? The most of Fry1989 given arguments are hypocrisy or simply not true (which I can refute in detail). And also my report had nothing to do with Maxxl2. -- ΠЄΡΉΛΙΟ 04:30, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes non-admins close discussions in the exact same way as admins do, usually when no admin action is needed, or it has already taken place. The discussion can be re-opened in cases where it's not really finished according to a few people. Penyulap 04:56, 22 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:Orpheum Wurlitzer opus 1746 style 240 (1927-) console.jpg[edit]

Thank you for renaming this file. And I'm sorry for my trivial request.

The naming of series of images is always headache thing for me. At first, I'd planned to name files along with following rule:

  • "<famous theater> Wurlitzer opus <NNNN> style <NNN> (<timeframe>), <component> <N> <...>.jpg"
  • "Wurlitzer opus <NNNN> style <NNN> (<timeframe>), <component> <N>, <theater>, <location> <...>.jpg"
where <N> means extension number, etc.

However, possibly the expression "<component> <N>" looks like the multiple existence of same components (in historically, for example). So I've changed my previous rule as following:

  • "<famous theater> Wurlitzer opus <NNNN> style <NNN> (<timeframe>) <component> <additional description> <...>.jpg"
  • "Wurlitzer opus <NNNN> style <NNN> (<timeframe>) <component> <additional description>, <theater>, <location> <...>.jpg"

and requested renaming of this file. (again, I've already think it is too trivial to request).

Anyway, thank you for renaming! --Clusternote (talk) 05:55, 14 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi![edit]

Hi! I helped a lady draft and and send an E-mail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org with three photos of the Uzbek actress Sitora Farmonova attached. She also send the E-mail to me. Will ORTS members upload the photos themselves? If yes, how will I find out when they do? Or can I go ahead and upload them? I'n not sure if ORTS volunteers will locate the photos if I upload them myself. Because the photos in the E-mail are not named properly, they're right from the camera. Thanks! Nataev (talk)

Hello,

COM:CONSENT redirects here. For information about consent to deal with photographs of people, see Commons:Photographs of identifiable people.

If you have been directed to this page because you wish to release the rights to a file to which you own the copyright, please consider clicking on the link above rather than completing the following email template. The Interactive Release Generator is designed to make the process of releasing the rights to a file efficient and simple. The use of the following template, though still perfectly valid and certainly useful as a work of reference, is now discouraged and should only be used in exceptional circumstances. Thank you!

Email message template for release of rights to a file[edit]

We receive a large number of email messages from copyright holders wishing to allow Wikipedia to reuse their content (messages such as, "I allow Wikipedia to reuse my photos", etc.). Unfortunately, such statements are insufficient from a legal standpoint: we require a more specific declaration of consent to accept your permission. The following template will allow you to produce such a declaration.

  • Before you send us any email message, ensure that you've removed all the red instructions from the template.
  • Replace the template text (such as name) with your own details, and remove all of the brackets and footnotes.

To: permissions-commons@wikimedia.org

I hereby affirm that I choose one: [am name] or [represent copyright holder's name], the choose one: [creator] or [sole owner] of the exclusive copyright of choose one: [the media work][1] or [the work depicted in the media][2] or [both the work depicted and the media][3] as shown here: [exact URL of the file uploaded on Wikimedia Commons],[4] and have legal authority in my capacity to release the copyright of that work.

I agree to publish the above-mentioned content under the following free license: Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International.[5]

I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work, even in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikipedia or related sites.

I am aware that the copyright holder always retains ownership of the copyright as well as the right to be attributed in accordance with the license chosen. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by the copyright holder.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on a Wikimedia project.

[Sender's name]
[Sender's authority (if applicable. E.g. "Copyright holder", "Director", "Appointed representative of", etc.)]
[Date]

  1. The words "media work" should be chosen for cases where the "medium" is also the "work", e.g., a photograph of a sunset or a person, an original digital drawing, diagram, or map, a sound recording of a bird, the text of a web page, etc., but not a photograph of another person's copyrighted painting or a sound recording of a person playing a flute or pronouncing a series of words, for which see below.
  2. The words "work depicted in the media" mean, for example, the case of a digital photograph (the medium) of an artistic sculpture (the work) where the sculptor did not take the photograph but is the individual here making the licensing statement.
  3. The words, "both the work depicted and the media" mean those instances when the person making the statement is the copyright owner of the thing depicted (e.g., the sculpture, the oil painting, the particular musical performance, the reading of a monologue from Hamlet) as well as the owner of the medium in which it is being provided (e.g., the photograph of it, the movie clip in which it appears, the Photoshop drawing of it, the sound clip containing it).
  4. You must clearly identify the content that you're permitting us to use. A statement such as "I am creator of the images used on XYZ page" is NOT sufficient. You must provide exact URL link(s) to the content or attach the content to the email message. For images, we prefer that you upload them to Wikimedia Commons, place {{subst:OP}} somewhere on the file description page, and provide the URL(s) of the uploaded content in your email message.
  5. You may choose another license from our list of free licenses if you wish, but you MUST state a license; otherwise, this declaration is invalid. Please also indicate the license's most recent version number, if applicable: CC BY-SA 4.0 or Creative Commons 0 Public Domain Dedication 1.0 are acceptably specific; simply stating Creative Commons license, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike, or CC BY (without the version number) is not.
Send the statement to our email response team ("VRT") at permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, and then tag the subject file(s) with {{subst:PP}}. The email message you send should come from an email address that we can recognize as somehow associated with the content being released. For instance, if you are releasing images shown on a website, your email address should be associated with the website or listed on the contact page of the website; if you are releasing images on behalf of an organization, your email address should be at an official address of the organization; if you are releasing a work that is not available online, you may be asked to privately provide evidence of your identity to the VRT agent who processes your statement; if you are releasing a work for which you are acting on the copyright holder's behalf, you may be asked to provide proof of this authorization such as a forwarded email message with full Internet headers from the copyright holder designating you as their representative in this matter.

I just checked this file. Your moves seem to be in the desired direction. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 10:54, 28 March 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Why do ORTS volunteers take forever to process E-mails? It's so damn bureaucratic. Nataev (talk) 14:52, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think it's because there aren't enough of them, or there isn't enough interest sometimes. It can take ages, though sometimes it's fast. There is a template that was made by people who were bored of waiting (well maybe it was) and it's called {{OTRS pending}} and you can put that onto the file to let people know that the file is ok. Penyulap 16:52, 28 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think you might be interested in volunteering for OTRS in order to break what you called "bureaucratic" process. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 12:13, 29 March 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Memorial Route of Jewish Martyrdom and Struggle in Warsaw[edit]

Hello, why have you reverted those? Boston9 (talk) 10:52, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As I checked the history of the file, I've seen that you've changed all the description and then asked for renaming. While I don't accuse you of anything, but my experience is that some users have tried to compel filemovers to renaming in a nasty manner through such moves. Good day. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 10:56, 15 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]

This is not my case. You can find the exact locations of those memorial blocks listed in the table in the new article on Polish Wikipedia at here. If you check the name Frumka Płotnicka is says "Ulica Dubois róg Niskiej" (Dubois Street corner of Niska Street), which is 100% correct and verifiable, for example on the official website of the City of Warsaw here or on the orthophotomap of Warsaw here. "Zamenhofa" in the name of the file is wrong and "Dubois" is correct. Zamenhofa Street ends at the intersection with Miła Street. I just wanted to correct this and I have started what is easier for me i.e. the photo description. Boston9 (talk) 11:22, 15 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Evelina Hedlund.jpg&diff=94496390&oldid=94495642 This is an abuse of the rollbacker user right. It is for fighting vandals, not for undoing good faith edits. --Leyo 12:41, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Addition to make sure you got it right: It's just about using rollback for undoing a good faith edit. If you would have undone this edit with the standard functionality, i.e. that allows stating a reason, there would not have been a problem. --Leyo 09:45, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Here there's one major point of concern - an administrative of action of rolling back rename request is wrong or THE NATURE OF GOOD FAITH IN ASKING FOR RENAMING JENNIFER LOPEZ TO KATE WINSLET OR NICOLE KIDMAN? DOES THAT NOT CLOSELY BORDER VANDALISM, ESPECIALLY IF IT IS DONE MISCHEVIOUSLY? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 13:42, 22 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]

I've since renamed the file you overwrote as "File:Pocahontas 1883.jpg" so you can now upload the file with the generic "Pocahontas.jpg" if you like, but a more descriptive filename, such as including the author or date of the work, would be even better. This is again a flaw of Up! - I don't like overwrite but the tool simply does it. I've recently started going for offtrack naming to overcome this prob - but cannot guarantee here as well - there can be other user's on Commons who as much offtrackish as myself. Related problem[edit]

Could you please fix such mistakes in Special:ListFiles/Hindustanilanguage? --Leyo 14:25, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I'm sandwiched between two sysops - one who believes in the date of upload to be the "date" and another who asks for the actual date when the file was created which is beyond my knowledge. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 15:12, 17 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]
The relevant date is always the date of the (original) creation of the (art)work. For old files, you may use Template:Other date to indicate e.g. the century. --Leyo 15:30, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What is unclear or why don't you reply? --Leyo 00:21, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I thought you'll review your statement in the above section first, but you've not done so far. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:00, 21 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]
Túrelio fixed your mistake. Such mistakes are typically made by users who are unexperienced in copyright matters. To make it clear, I made one correction as an example. --Leyo 14:26, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

What about your misjudged admin mistake in supporting the renaming of a file by a user with no verification, no minimum courtesy of asking what explanation does a filemover has to offer?

I've, in particular, quoted your rough behaviour in the RfC - compare a humble way an ordinary user makes an admin realize his mistake and the sarcastic way in which the admin approaches - experienced admin, ah! Hindustanilanguage (talk) 15:44, 21 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]

I don't really understand what you are talking about. I was not sarcastic in this thread.
Please get rid of the mistakes in your uploads. --Leyo 19:40, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be possible to comply if you were more specific. I know it is impossible to be less specific than asking any user to fix all mistakes in their uploads. Penyulap 01:09, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Leyo, you're right, you were never sarcastic in this thread. Actually, it was this thread and of course, a surprising thing was your support to a user's rename request which belied existing reasons of renaming a file as seen here. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 09:28, 22 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Please do not mix up different things. If you have questions or comments, ask/make them there.
Do I need to answer Penyulap's request or do you know which file description pages need to be corrected yourself? --Leyo 09:41, 22 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, you've messed up things. This section is "Pocahontas.jpg overwrite" and was meant to discuss the overwrite only. If you include other things in it, you've go to answer those things pertaining to your edits as well, which I included in it just as you included unrelated stuff in it. . I'll be happy if you could clarify on your very own sarcastic remark. Please compare this stray remark with the humble way in which we ordinary users make admins realize their mistakes. Hi Hindustanilanguage[edit]

I've long considered editor-requested blocks to be an essential part of a safe working environment for some volunteers. I've never asked for one, but consider them a logical outcome of certain circumstances. I think I might have seen someone report themselves on an AN recently, I know I have before, long ago on en.wiki. It's a simple matter of logic and integrity combining, the rules are, at least in the minds of a tiny few people, meant to be the same for everyone without exception. So some circumstances would potentially present themselves in which that person knows that they would ask for someone else to be blocked, and so they should ask for them-self to be blocked because they shouldn't be any different to anyone else. I think the idea is viewed as insanity by people who are unable to entertain the idea that they could possibly be wrong under any circumstance, and there are quite a few people like that around.

I think it would be a good idea to raise the issue on commons. Have it discussed. Penyulap 19:21, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Penyulap, a discussion related to the points raised by you is in progress @ the talk page of Rd232. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 19:27, 20 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]

I understand his thinking there, it does have a logic to it. I think it should be discussed in commons space, for example on commons talk:blocking or whatever passes for that, or possibly the village swamp ...eek :) Penyulap 19:37, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you read the section "Two diverse issues", you'll see that I've assured him NOT TO RAISE THE ISSUE ON ANY OF OUR FORUMS in line with his words "Before doing that you can of course ask me (here or by email) any questions that might help clarify the issue." I therefore cannot proceed much at this point as I would not like to break my promise. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 19:50, 20 April 2013 (UTC).[reply]

I understand perfectly. Penyulap 01:18, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Help needed (again) :)[edit]

Hi! It's me again with yet another request: This image looks like it could be India related. Could you have a look which category can be used? As always, thanks for your time! --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:26, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This appears to be pertaining to Shiva temples of Cholanadu in Tamil Nadu, India. Cf: 1 and 2. Probably Category:Shiva temples in Tamil Nadu is most suited here. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 05:12, 7 June 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Flag of South Korea.svg[edit]

I reverted your rename of the file; with such a huge file and other issues I brought up on the talk page, we have to discuss this first before doing anything major on a global scale. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 03:23, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for highlighting the concurrent discussions. However, on our very Commons we've got a file indicative of the suggested name. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:24, 18 July 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Different formats, that doesn't qualify for an automatic rename. The one you picked was F2, which says "Change from completely meaningless names into suitable names, according to what the image displays". South Korea is not a useless name, and this is mostly going from auto-generated names from digital camera/cell phone photos to something we know to what it is. I am fixing the uses across all projects, but please be careful next time. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 17:04, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Declined rename of File:Krama.jpg[edit]

Hey there, I noticed that you had previously declined a file rename that I just made at File:Krama.jpg. You were correct that it was being used, but it was also being used incorrectly, a google image search of "Belarus Palac band" shows that the original rename request was correct. Just a heads up. Liamdavies (talk) 07:40, 18 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up but I am glad you've realised the solid basis for endorsing old name on the basis of the usage on Wikipedia. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 08:29, 18 July 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Completely understand, that's why I didn't rename it when it came up, leaving it for a more experienced filemover. But when it came up again I thought I'd investigate a bit more. (Also, I meant the heads up as info, and in no way a warning - I hope you didn't see it as an admonishment) Liamdavies (talk) 15:45, 19 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Penguins in Nebraska zoo.JPG[edit]

My request for a file move was not merely because of capitalization like you said. It was because a lower case .jpg is the standard format on Commons. SL93 (talk) 22:17, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't mean to capitalize it, I was the uploader, and I own the copyright for it. So why can't my mistake be fixed? SL93 (talk) 22:27, 26 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done by Billinghurst before I could do it. Anyway, thanks++ for contributing on Commons. Hindustanilanguage (talk) 09:17, 27 July 2013 (UTC).[reply]

File:Porpoise head bisected.jpg[edit]

Hi, I need an administrator's intervention here, and I picked you at random.

I uploaded a week ago a photograph of the bisected head of a bottlenose dolphin: File:Porpoise head bisected.jpg. I accidentally called it "Porpoise head bisected.jpg" when it ought to read "Dolphin". This image was taken from a very old NASA publication, and I'm guessing that in those days it was acceptable to call dolphins "porpoises". Whatever the case, these days Tursiops truncatus is not of the porpoise family.Kurzon (talk) 17:56, 27 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Do you want me to rename it "File:Dolphin head bisected.jpg" ? Hindustanilanguage (talk) 17:59, 27 July 2013 (UTC).[reply]

Yes.Kurzon (talk) 08:36, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
