Hello, Gugganij!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Your images listed in the page Burj Khalifa have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi. I´m from Uruguay. I speak german but I prefer talks to you in english. I saw this photo of yours and iI´m working in energy related task in spanish. I will use the photo but I will make some improvements in colour and brightness. I tell you because I already modify another and someone get hurts. I hope you have no problems with this. Thanks.--Andreateletrabajo (talk) 17:03, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andrea, I wouldn't have released my images under creative commons if I didn't agree with any use/alterations compatible with its license. However, it is very nice that you made me aware of your intentions. I would be glad if you could give me a link to the modified version - just curious. Thanks again Gugganij (talk) 23:11, 25 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. It's nice to find people reasonable like you. Supposely the other one also was a free image, but he felt hurt and I don´t want to live that mment again. Probably I´´ll put it as "New version" of yours. I´ll let you know when ready - probably tomorrow. Thanks again.--Andreateletrabajo (talk) 03:03, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Done. Let me know what you think. Aufwiedersehen.--Andreateletrabajo (talk) 03:32, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Much better than the original one. Concerning the guy who got angry: When releasing an image on Commons it has to be under a license allowing anyone to alter it in any way; if he doesn't like that idea he shouldn't have uploaded it in the first place. Whatever, I wish you a nice weekend. Greetings to Uruguay. Gugganij (talk) 21:50, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I am contacting you regarding this file because you have made changes to it in the past, and still seem to be active here, unlike the original file creator. I believe that there is a problem with the colouration of the map. The UK and Denmark should be the same colour, as they have the same status. Both hold opt outs of EMU, and their status should be left at that. Both could theoretically hold a referendum at some future time to get rid of their opt out. However, there is no serious prospect of that in either country in the near to medium term. Would it be possible to reflect that in the map, by making them both the same colour, to reflect a simple "Hold opt-outs" category? Thanks very much for your help in this matter. I do not have the technical capacity to make the change myself. Best regards, --Peregrine981 (talk) 13:57, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I agree. However, you may want to raise that question first at the file talk page since this file is linked to quite a lot of articles. Regards Gugganij (talk) 17:45, 18 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
ok, will do. Peregrine981 (talk) 15:53, 19 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Für was ist diese Aktion gut? Bwag (talk) 13:08, 1 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Was meinst du?

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images and other files on Commons must be under a free license and should be useful to the Wikimedia projects. To allow others to use your files, some additional information must be given on the description page. Most importantly:
  • Describe what it is about in a short sentence. (What does the image show?)
  • State the author and the date of creation. If you made it yourself, say so explicitly. If it is from another Wikimedia user, link to the person's local user page. Best to use CommonsHelper.
  • If you did not create the file yourself, state the source you got it from.
  • Add a copyright tag - images without an appropriate license tag will be deleted.
  • Add the image to one or more gallery pages and/or appropriate categories, so it can be found by others. To find out where an image belongs, you can use CommonsSense.

If you copied the file from another wiki, please copy all information given there and say who uploaded it to that wiki. Use CommonsHelper.

It is recommended to use Template:Information to put that information on the description page. Have a look at Template talk:Information for details of the use of this template.

You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file.

Please add as much information as possible. If there is not sufficient information, the file may have to be deleted. For more information, follow the Commons:First steps guide. If you need help or have questions, please ask at the Help desk.

Thank you.

Dual License Image?[edit]

Yes, no problem. I won't change the license on Commons (for obvious reasons), but I will dual license it for you. Don't know if you need a separate email confirming that, or if this reply suffices. Would be kind though, if you could post the link to your video once it is finished on this talk page. Gugganij (talk) 18:42, 7 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Franz Lackner 20070416 cropped.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Request for permission to use image[edit]

Dear Alex, I'm a publisher from Namibia. I would like to use your image of Maglev Train in our Natural Science and Health Education Grade 6 textbook. I kindly ask for your permission to use this image in our publication. I will ensure the image gets attributed to you in the Acknowledgements section of the book. Dear Patrycja, you contacted the wrong user: I am not Alex, I am Gugganij. :-) However, just a general remark: you are allowed to use any image of Wikimedia Commons for any purpose, as long as you adhere to the license under which it was published in Wikimedia Commons. If there are more than one license (like here) you can use the one which best fits your needs. Regards Gugganij (talk) 19:35, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Mein Vorschlag: a) 1. Version wiederherstellen und b) 2. Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Gugganij,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Hi TharonXX. No problem - I create a map for you. And then I am going to show you how to change it. It's actually pretty simple. You don't need any special program. You just need a text editor. Gugganij (talk) 20:25, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Here it is: File:World Youth Day host countries.svg. Gugganij (talk) 21:00, 29 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks you very much .... but there is one mistake ... one color too much you gave. There should be two colors ... and Italy should be "colored" as Poland and Spain .... because only two times and I have not heard that in Italy WYD took place three times. As in a text editor such ... such as Microsoft Office Word or WordPad .... and not a photo editing program? Regards TharonXX (talk) 06:38, 31 July 2016 (UTC).[reply]
Hi, according to the English and Italian Wikipedia (World Youth Day) Italy hosted the WYD 3 times. The map reflects that (under the assumption, that the article is correct). You can change the map yourself by downloading the whole file on your computer (click the "Rozmiar pierwotny" button). Then right click on the file and open it with WordPad. You will see pages over pages with code. Scroll a bit down (not much) until you find:

/*

*countries hosting WYD three times
*/

.va, .it

{

    opacity: 1;
    fill: #1c34a9;

} /*

*countries hosting WYD two times
*/

.es, .pl

{

    opacity: 1;
    fill: #406bbc;

} /*

*countries hosting WYD once
*/

.ar, .us, .ph, .frx, .ca, .de, .au, .br

{

    opacity: 1;
    fill: #82b5d6;

}

That's where the fun starts. For adding countries you just have to add the ISO 3166 code (you see that I added .pl - for Poland - next to Spain (.es) as those two countries hosted the WYD twice and their colour on the map is defined by the fill: term - in this case it's #406bbc;). After you made you changes just save the file and upload it on Commons. I hope my explanations helped. Gugganij (talk) 12:02, 31 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please update the file[edit]

Dear Gugganij, can you please update the File:CountriesRecognizingKosovo.svg ? It is necessary to fill Suriname with green color. Thank you! BR, Ds02006 (talk) 11:39, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Gugganij (talk) 18:04, 30 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Holy See[edit]

Hi! Now the Holy See has bilateral relations with Mauretania and Myanmar: is it possible to refresh File:Vatican relations.svg, File:Holy See missions accreditations and relations.png and File:Holy See relations.png? Thanks! --Jerus82 (talk) 11:37, 4 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jerus82; I updated the map of File:Vatican relations.svg. I didn't update File:Holy See missions accreditations and relations.png, since it is still unknown what status the nuntius or the ambassador will have (e.g. will the ambassador of Mauretania and Myanmar be an non-resident ambassador or not). Gugganij (talk) 19:09, 6 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! --Jerus82 (talk) 06:18, 8 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello.

In the File:Canadian embassies map.svg could you change the color for Iran (because Canada has cut of diplomatic relations with Iran) and paint it in pink, and remove Bosnia, Syria, Benin, Niger and Libya (because Canada closed its embassies in these countries)?. Could you add Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia, Iraq, Bolivia, Qatar, Rwanda and South Sudan (because Canada opened embassies in these countries)? I requested this because I don't know how to create and upload SVG files myself.

This file is linked to File:Canadian embassies map.png which is updated. See also sources.

Thank you.

South Sudan border[edit]

Hello.

Can you add the border of South Sudan in File:DOLLAR AND EURO IN THE WORLD.svg and File:Diplomatic relations of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.svg? South Sudan has its own currency, the en:South Sudanese Pound and the Order of Malta has diplomatic relations with South Sudan. Source: https://www.orderofmalta.int/contacts/south-sudan/

I requested this because I don't know how to create and upload SVG files myself. I can only edit PNG and GIF files, where I added the border of South Sudan in hundreds of maps, as long as they are not sophisticated topographical and orthographical maps.

If you stumble upon current maps where South Sudan is missing, can you update them, if you are interested?

See also Category:Maps needing South Sudan political boundaries, in case you are interested in adding missing South Sudan borders and labels.

Zucchetto[edit]

Hi, you have described this file: https://la.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pileolus#/media/Fasciculus:Cardinal_zucchetto_2003_modified_2008-15-08.jpg as Card. Ratzinger's head wearing zucchetto, which is not true. This is a head of Card. Macharski from Cracow (Poland), which can be easily verified here: https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plik:Ratzinger_Szczepanow_2003_5_modified.jpg Card. Macharski died in 2016.

Hi, I didn't describe it as Ratzinger wearing a zucchetto, I just mentioned the original file from which cropped the image (see File:Ratzinger Szczepanow 2003 5 modified.jpg). Regards Gugganij (talk) 17:24, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gugganij,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed File:Exclusive Economic Zones World.png is out of date. No territorial sea or EEZ shown around Navassa Island. Could you update it? Thanks again. Geographyinitiative (talk) 19:59, 7 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Correction request[edit]

Hello.

In File:Form of government constitutional monarchy.png, Barbados (the easternmost Caribbean island in the map) needs to be colored in gray, because it became a republic in 2021 and the border of South Sudan needs to be added.

In File:Government constitutional monarchy.svg, Monaco needs to be colored in light green, because the ruling prince wields a lot of constitutional power (see: en:Constitution of Monaco) and Barbados (the easternmost Caribbean island in the map) needs to be colored in gray, because it became a republic in 2021.

Both maps are widely used across Wikipedia.
