Hi EugeneZelenko! Well, about the permisiion of the photos, we can find it in the foot of the page where it was published here https://encyclopedia.mil.ru/encyclopedia/history/more.htm?id=12281734@cmsArticle; And here https://encyclopedia.mil.ru/encyclopedia/history/more.htm?id=12109371@cmsArticle

Greetings! --Eduviñasan (talk) 09:33, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. The photos had a Creative Commons Atribución 4.0 Internacional. Permission according to the informations available on the page. Thank you!

It's hard to tell if Ministry of Defense original author or not, since photos are historical and may be in public domain. At lease date of creation need to be find out. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:33, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if the Ministry of Defense is the author of the photos or not, but if the photos are on their website, it is obvious that they have the copyright to use those photos and according to the website itself, anyone can use them. About the date of creation, it's hard to tell but, I think both photos are about 1945, just after the end of the Second World War or later. --Eduviñasan (talk) 21:54, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You didn't convince me about authorship. Date of creation is also not-obvious. For me it looks like made in 1960s-1970s. Unfortunately photo's resolution is in not enough to see rank and awards clearly. Otherwise this article may help to make better guess. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:36, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. in the case of Ivan Petrov he got his medal of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945 and died in 1958, so it's impossible that the photo was made in 60s, as you say. In the case of Aleksandr Rodímtsev he got his second medal of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1945 again, but died in the 70s so it's possible that the photo was made in 60s as you say. But I do not understand why you are being so intransigent, there are a lot of photos in Wikipedia that come from the website of the Russian Ministry of Defense and can be used without problems, why are these photos different?
The photo of the article that you put is previous, since the rank that he has is Colonel General (he has two stars on the shoulder pads) and he has two medals of Hero of the Soviet Union so the photo is between 1945 and 1961. but the rank in the photo that I put is Lieutenant General (he has three stars on the shoulder pads) so the photo is after 1961
Eduviñasan (talk) 17:31, 27 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I looked only Rodimtsev photo. See article about Petrov which contain list of awards that may be helpful to guess photo creation time. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:09, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
ok in this case the resolution of the photo is very poor, but I think the photo is around 1945, because you can see that he only has three Orders of Lenin and he was awarded his fourth Orders of Lenin in 1950, and It is also seen that he has three Orders of the Red Flag and again he got his fourth medal in 1948, so the photo I think is between 1945, when he got his Hero of the Soviet Union medal and 1948, when he got his fourth Order of the Flag Red. I hope that now everything is clear and there is no more problem. Eduviñasan (talk) 21:56, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Eugene, those photos are comming from family archiv or family book. I just took a photo with mobile. I am junior in wiki, so please advice how to tag it correctly. General links on help pages are not helping me. Thank you, Sincerely, Jancimusic --Jancimusic (talk) 07:38, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You need to find out information about original photographer or at least approximate date of creation. See also Commons:Copyright rules by territory for relevant country. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 18:53, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The photographer was my father or some of my uncles around 1954. --Jancimusic (talk) 07:38, 9 February 2021 (UTC)— Preceding unsigned comment added by Jancimusic (talk • contribs) 07:25, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You need to find out exactly. Are you only heir of your father? You could also ask permission from your uncle heir(s). See Commons:OTRS and Commons:Email templates. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:50, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Eugene, my father died in 1972, I only got the Family book, I dont understand your point.--Jancimusic (talk) 17:34, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that copyrights are inherited like any other property. Only lawful heir could give permission. If several heirs are involved, each of them must do this. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 17:39, 9 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Eugene, I have corrected the author attribute. I cant ask my dead father for any rights, cause I inheritetd them after his death by law. I hope this is understandable and you will dismiss the warning. If you have any other proposal for any other correction, please advice, I will be happy to do--Jancimusic (talk) 18:04, 9 February 2021 (UTC).[reply]
From you first reply it was unclear who was photographer. This needs to be sorted out. You also didn't answer my question: are you only heir of your father? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 00:14, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Eugene, Yes I have it cleared, it was my father. Yes I am the only one. If you feel you need anything more, feel free to ask for it.--Jancimusic (talk) 18:44, 10 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please send copyrights ownership confirmation with authorship/inheritance details to Commons:OTRS (example: Commons:Email templates). Then you could ask help on Commons:OTRS/Noticeboard with permissions review. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:37, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Eugene, I have sent it. Take care.--Jancimusic (talk) 21:33, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

MIGRACIÓN A EE.UU. EN 1920. Campillo de Llerena. Badajoz[edit]

Gracias. Thank you.--Atilanocarrasco (talk) 19:42, 30 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, what kind of argument is "non-trivial logo" for deleting a logo? What makes a logo non-trivial? --Sb008 (talk) 09:33, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This particular logo doesn't fit {{PD-textlogo}}: it's not plain text/geometric forms. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:48, 31 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I don't get it, the {{PD-textlogo}} says: "This logo image consists only of simple geometric shapes or text.". How can image which meets that criteria, i.e. consisting only of simple geometric shapes or text, and be, as you say, "not plain text/geometric forms" at the same time? So it has to consist only of simple geometric shapes or text and at the same time not to be of of plain/simple geometric forms. Sounds to me like ssaying it has to qualify, but it doesn't qualify because it qualifies. I always thought I, with a college degree in match, knew a bit about logic, but this kind of logic is totally new to me. Wouldn't it be easier to say "no image will ever qualify" since it's impossible to be and not to be at the same time? --Sb008 (talk) 09:07, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, English is not my native tongue. I wanted to say that this particular logo is not {{PD-textlogo}}. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:46, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

So basically logo's of sport associations are not allowed? To mention a few, and these are only those which are football related:

--Sb008 (talk) 17:35, 1 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo EugeneZelenko! Vielen Dank --Rena Cori (talk) 10:38, 2 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear EugeneZelenko

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Next Africa book cover image notices[edit]

Hi Eugene, Addressing your additional notations to images used on The Next Africa book page (have included your comments in brackets below). Hopefully we can address most of that here. 1. For the WorlDenver image, it came from one of several event images links related to the event released for public use. Here's one of those links: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.995856217177565.1073741891.238242156272312&type=3 2. On the Kenyan Vibe image, seeking written permission from the editor of that site. 3. On the WorldAffairs Council SF image, checked and it was a public event and that image was taken by someone in attendance at the event and given to the authors of The Next Africa for use on social media. Please advise how to handle permission on that. 4. On the C-Span image, it would appear it would be covered by C-Span's terms and conditions here: https://www.c-span.org/about/termsAndConditions/

Please advise. Thanks.

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC[edit]

Hello EugeneZelenko,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

User:Dannywithay's uploads[edit]

Hi EugeneZelenko. You previously deleted a bunch of files uploaded by Dannywithay per Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Dannywithay, but they've uploaded some more similar files which I've tagged as copyvios. The editor never posted any comments in the aformentioned DR, but it seems as if they simply don't understand COM:L. It's possible they are mistaking something being posted on Facebook as "public" and, thus, OK to upload to Commons. This could be just a good faith misunderstanding; so, I'm a bit reluctant to hit them with an {{End of copyvios}} template just yet. So, I'm wondering if there's a more friendly type of user warning template which could be used instead. English Wikipedia, for example, has some user warning templates for different levels, with level-1 templates being used for a first warning and level-4 templates being used for a final warning. Does Commons have something similar that could be used in a case like this? -- Marchjuly (talk) 11:55, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You could leave message in plain text. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:45, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I thought about doing. I was just curious if there was a template as well. Thanks for taking a look. -- Marchjuly (talk) 21:30, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I tried posting a friendly message about this on their user talk page, but they blanked the page without comment. That's OK, but I guess it means no more warnings if they continue to upload questionable files. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:38, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Rate Limit for my Bot[edit]

Hello, I'm currently upload GLAM material from The Utrecht Archives with my bot 'CompanjeBot'. If I'm correct you granted this bot a 'BotFlag' which should make it easier to upload large amounts of images. Unfortunately I get the error 'Upload Error ratelimited You've exceeded your rate limit. Please wait some time and try again.' Do you maybe know a solution? Otherwise uploading our collection will take me months I'm affraid. --Companje (talk) 14:16, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I could not answer such question easily. mw:Manual:$wgRateLimits doesn't looks like there are any special user group. Also user rights page doesn't list rights that may mean exclusion from rate limit. I think you should try to ask other mass uploaders like User:Fæ through I don't see any special rights in his case as well as for User:Faebot. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:08, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Uploading a million files has taken me more than 3 months. Having a bot flag doesn't change the way it works.
It is a good thing to take months rather than days, as volunteers can work on the collection and raise issues before it's all finished. You could create a sock-farm and bypass any limits, but it's not normal practice. Once it's running, it only needs monitoring, so the calendar time is slightly irrelevant.
Oh, to be fair I do use the multiprocessing features of Python, so do sometimes do faster stuff, but normally for fast non-controversial housekeeping jobs, or multiple upload attempts in parallel when the WMF servers are not behaving well, but not in general for first uploads of collections.
I've also never seen the 'rate limit' error, only messages waiting for a lag to expire. It may be related to your upload methods, not just a group added to your account. If you are still stuck, ask at COM:VPT with a bit more technical info. -- (talk) 20:58, 17 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure[edit]

Greetings: I closed some Deletion Nominations and afterwards researched this image for real search since metadata showed Library of Congress: File:Rashid street-baghad-c.1920s.jpg. It dates to 1932. Ric 1967 pictures on Slavka Taskova page and Pier Paolo Paoletti page[edit]

Hi Eugene thanks for your notes. I agree on some details such as the record cover on Taskova page " Como una ola de fuerza y luz", this is the pic of a record cover, but the other pictures are self taken by the singer husband in case of Taskova and by the doctor's collaborators themselves in the Pier Paolo Paoletti page. This to say that those pics are all copyright free becuase basically self produced by the talents themselves. In the metadata some of them are coming from an i-phone because it was faster than scanning old paper pictures. I am new to wiki , it is difficult for me to understand where to write this info , can you help me? i do not understand where to edit to add info on the origin of the pics. it is very complicated and not very user friendly. happy to update but i need a guidance, please think that you are talking to a wiki dummy :) Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ric1967 (talk • contribs) 09:06, 19 February 2021 (UTC) Ric1967 (talk) 09:41, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is source/license for background music? Please also read Commons:Derivative works to understand problem. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:31, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@EugeneZelenko: I'm Giacomo Alessandroni, the teacher of Geppetto (88's dog). I encourage my pupils to use the Wikimedia environment, but they done a lot of mistakes, as you can see. So, the soundtrack is Ocean View, by Patrick Patrikios (from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayr1hRKH9Zg). About the license, I read "No Copyright Audio Library" and "Music without copyright - Attribution not required." so I propose: Music CC-BY Patrick Patrikios, Ocean View, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayr1hRKH9Zg. Is it right? --Galessandroni (talk) 16:04, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Attribution is not required, so BY is not needed. However, will be good idea to clarify with author if derivative works are allowed. By the word, it'll be good idea to suggest composer to use one of Creative Commons licenses explicitly, just to avoid our guesses :-) --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:09, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The authors (in the YouTube channel) have written "You're free to use this song and monetize your video.". In my opinion is a good practics to cite the author. In the chat below the video there is this explicit question:
- LawaGaming (1 month ago) I can use this music to my YT videos ?
- No Copyright Audio Library (1 month ago) Read Description -> You're free to use this song and monetize your video.
So, the licence seem CC0, But I prefer using a CC-BY. And now the true question: do I ask to my student to upload again the video without music, or citing the author?
Galessandroni (talk) 18:00, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Use is ambiguous definition. It may allow creation of derivative work or may not. See w:en:Creative Commons license for -ND. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 02:19, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all. Final decision: I'll ask to my student to upload a new file without soundtrack (or with a CC soundtrack). Thank you and bye, Galessandroni (talk) 09:03, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't know French :-( Are you only heir of your father? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:39, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am heiress of the rights on the scientific works of my father Nicolas Théobald. After his death, I recieved money paid by his Editors. That is wy I try to publish a synthesis of his work on Wikipedia. For the illustration, I versed first 3 files: Nicolas Théobald, Aquisextana Irenaei; Terrasses emboîtées ou étagées, M. Darmois-Théobald et Y. Rangheard; Thèse de Nicolas Théobald, pl.II, Insectes du Sannoisien du Gard. As my Wikipedian tutor found that these pictures were too "grey", I versed 3 more files with white back (?) and different names to avoid confusion. These are: Terrasses alluviales Fig.1 et 2, T. emboîtées Fig. 3, T. étagées ; N.THEOBALD, Fig.4 Fac-similé Pl II Thèse 1937 ; N. THEOBALD, Fig. 5 Aquisextana Irenaei.
I hope you will accept my Declaration on Honnor to be truly depositary of the rights on my father's works.--Mireille Théobald (talk) 17:14, 25 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

About photos from argentina.gob.ar[edit]

Hello EugeneZelenko, I have a question about File:Avión casa 212 del ejército argentino (AE-264) durante carga 2020.png, photos from web argentina.gob.ar (official web form argentina government) are license creative commons argentina.gob.ar cc-by-sa-4.0 ("El Administrador licencia todos sus contenidos bajo la licencia Creative Commons Atribución 4.0 Internacional, cuyo texto legal puede encontrarse en https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.es, excepto cuando se declare lo contrario." -> The Administrator licenses all its contents under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license, the legal text of which can be found at https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/deed.es, except when stated otherwise.), and there are another photos from the same web in creative commons, do you need specific license for every photo from this web or that is enough? Thanks AlbertoDV (talk) 16:51, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, filling permission field in {{Information}} is definitely helpful. But please fix license (CC-BY, not CC-BY-SA). --EugeneZelenko (talk) 18:55, 9 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Simple logo and not copyrighted. It should not be deleted under current regulations. You are again acting as trigger happy. This gives Commons bad reputation. -- Zblace (talk) 15:51, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please read nomination text. It tells about Commons:Project scope, not copyrights matters. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:54, 10 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It says nothing specific (except for being formulated as an insult), but just a generic technical statement (sure .svg is better). -- Zblace (talk) 20:38, 11 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's clearly refer to one of project rules, Commons:Project scope. I don't see anything insulting in nomination text. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 02:16, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
You wrote trivial and questionable notability...what else you should say about 3 year international science and art project funded by Swiss national science fund to actually become insulting? It is not clear how research on Digital Commons and Creativity is outside of scope of Wikimedia that is digital commons itself and builds on participatory and creative work. Please explain yourself / this is not the first time you act and communicate so benevolent. You really add to hostile atmosphere and bad reputation of Wikimedia projects. -- Zblace (talk) 11:50, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please stick to rational arguments and hold your emotions (that appear not for a first time during this discussion as well as on Wikidata). If you know particular project, this fact doesn't assume that it's known for entire world. So you need to explain why project is notable (how many people works on it, what is audience, etc) and not on this discussion, but on deletion nominations. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:50, 12 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

An undelete is required for arbitrary cancellation specified before Passover: requesting the cancellation of Passower's files always in the month before Easter (this is already the third time), since these are files that do not violate any rules, it is not correct.

The release license is specifically compatible with Wikimedia and the files are developed and published specifically on Wikimedia to be available in the pages of Wikipedia in Italian and in Hebrew and in all languages that publish pages of Judaism to which the images and the works can relate.

Immediate reintegration of files and reintegration in all pages of the various Wikipedia languages that already published them are required

Kalimoun images[edit]

Hello EugeneZelenko.

I received with great interest your comments on the images I uploaded to illustrate the articles I created. Indeed, these images are my creations from book extracts, book covers, football team logos, modified photos of personalities, football teams, and other creations. I have added the copyright clause "self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all" to all of these images, and I hope that the great effort I have put into their creation will not be in vain, and that they will not be deleted. I await your further advice and guidance to complete the data of these images so that they are in line with the standards of Wikipedia Commons.

Cordially. --Kalimoun (talk) 11:25, 22 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Eugene Zelenko!

My nickname is Саша 4х4 and I am a new user on Wikipedia. I think that we had a little misunderstanding about materials that I iclude in my artickles. On the first and second pages I wrote about Ерёмина Татьяна Алексеевна and Брантман Александр Моисеевич as I am their grandchild so, I have all the rights to post that photos and documents from my archives. On the third page I wrote about Гесс де Кальве Станислав Борисович, he was my uncle and this also means that I can post all the materials. All the photos were from my family private archives and were not posted anywhere. Which another way can I proof that I have all the rights for that documents and how can I protect them from deleting?

Thank you for your time! Sicerely, Саша 4х4.

Hello EugeneZelenko, Thank you for pointing out the problem with permissions. I am a Wikipedian intern at the Jewish Digital Library, and I posted these files in agreement with them. I put OTRS in the above files. Each file is located on their site under license 4.0. If necessary, we can be sent an email with copy of a written permission to OTRS.

(Tam Jankovic (talk) 10:35, 25 March 2021 (UTC))[reply]

Please read Commons:Licensing carefully: not all of Creative Commons licenses are accepted. For example, File:Branka Bogdanov.png is {{Cc-by-nc-nd-4.0}} on source site. I'm not sure how single OTRS could solve this issue if photographs were not made by museum itself. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:41, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Al Williamson[edit]

Hello, I probably made a mistake when I upload the file Al Williamson.jpg. The Licence is Creative Commons Attribution 2.0 Générique and is clearly noted. Did I miss something ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Olivier Tanguy (talk • contribs) 21:15, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

This is historical photo, not modern shot, so Creative Commons license is very doubtful. However it may be in public domain. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory for relevant country. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 21:25, 27 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I found this photo on Flickr with this Licence. So Flickr made a mistake ? It was written it was verified. As I see it, this photo is anonymous and was shot before 1960. --Olivier Tanguy (talk) 08:42, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
It's known fact that people could make mistakes :-) What is important, it to find out country of origin and information about photographer, who owns copyrights. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:33, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I sent a message to Alan Light, the person who posted it on flickr. I hope he will give me satisfying answers. I'll tell you as soon as possible (and by the way, I'm french, so please excuse me if I make mistakes in writing). --Olivier Tanguy (talk) 21:02, 28 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have an answer, sort of : The photo has been deleted from flickr. I imagine the uploader didn't know the date and the place exactly. I continue to think the photo has no copyright (taken before 1964 and the author anonymous) but I have unfortunatly no proof. Too bad. Thanks for your advice. Best regards, --Olivier Tanguy (talk) 20:26, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Eugene, I draw this illustration using ink, paper and my hands. I wrote it in description of the file. What more may I do to fulfill wiki rules? Best Regards. Rayyar/Piotr Rayyar (talk) 21:39, 29 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sheree Renée Thomas[edit]

Hi, I am writing to ask why my photos keep being deleted from my wikipedia page. I am the author, editor discussed on the Sheree Renée Thomas (Sheree Thomas) page. I am the copyright owner of the photograph. I wasn't asked if I wanted the photo deleted. There was a previous one that had been up for two decades and that was suddenly. Again, why?

Sheree Renée Thomas — Preceding unsigned comment added by Journeyer8787 (talk • contribs) 19:47, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion request was open for two weeks, so you got enough time to address it. You could upload photo in original camera resolution with EXIF to proof your authorship. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 20:17, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

About File:Assaba.jpg [edit]

Hello, about this

it's a family photo of my great grandmother.

Regardes.--Waran18 (talk) 15:32, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You need to find information about photographer or at least approximate date of creation if photographer is unknown. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory for relevant country to find out if photo is in public domain or not. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:34, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, done, it's picture of physical photo in frame.--Waran18 (talk) 15:37, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Please fix date of creation. Physical media doesn't matter. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:39, 1 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I do not understand where it is the problem. I don't know Warant18 and I don't know his age, but if he was 25 when he started on Wikipedia in 2010 then his great-grandmother must have been born in the 1910s and it looks like the photo was taken in the '40s-'50s, and it was never publicly published. How can you fix the information about the author of a family photo taken 70 years ago? It's impossible. I myself have a family photo of an Algerian personality taken in the '90s, it has never been published and no one remembers who took it. How do I have to do? --Houmouvazine (talk) 18:04, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Photo obviously was created not in 2021. Anyway, it's responsibility of uploader to provide truthful source information. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 20:38, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I understood, I corrected the date.--Waran18 (talk) 18:31, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Date is still 2021 as well as incorrect claim of own work and license. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 22:15, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
License is {{PD-Algeria-photo-except}}, date is 1960. I do not understand you at all, I am a former contributor, there are thousands of copyvio pictures, and you are keen on family photos never published elsewhere! --Waran18 (talk) 08:48, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I removed {{Dw no source since}}. You could help with removing existing copyrights violations, but also help with not creating new ones. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:29, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not feel offended neither take as personal attack. Thanks for yor attention. Haroldomil (talk) 13:21, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Relevant rules and links were provided in messages on your talk page or deletion requests.
1st and 2rd groups of files - not your own work. May be in public domain, but proper source and license tag must be used. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory for relevant country.
See Commons:Derivative works. Most likely mascot is copyrighted.
Maps are copyrighted and your authorship is unlikely.
Last group of files - you could upload photos in original camera resolution with EXIF to proof your authorship.

Good afternoon, EugeneZelenko. Thanks for your attention and for answer me.
About the File:CAAM.png, I am in contact with the Chancellor of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez for getting its written authorization about this derivative work. I hope recieve soon an answer.
About the files:
• File:Eagle UAA.jpg
• File:Mapa UAA.png

• File:Estacion-San-Juan 1.jpg
• File:FerrocarrilHistoricoMap.jpg
• File:American Railroad Company 1910.png
I will provide the meta data about the origin of these works. Can they qualify by Public Domain because are older than 50 years from its initial creation? (The concept "own work" is about reproduction by me, not the origin of these files.) Any doubts, please ask me.
About the File:MH 1. Honvéd Tűzszerész És Hadihajós Ezred.png:
Asked Hungarian Ministry of Defense and the naval unit about the matter. Waiting answer.
About these files in category of Unlikely to be own work: small/inconsistent resolutions, missing EXIF:

I had lost the original photos than contains the EXIF and original metadata. These are copies from copies from the original. What would do?
Any complaints or additional questions, EugeneZelenko? Thank you for helping me! Haroldomil (talk) 17:44, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DW[edit]

Hi EugeneZelenko, Could you undelete File:Fishy Mobile.jpg please and I'll send to DR - I personally don't believe this is a DW issue however if it is I can photoshop the offending material out. Many thanks, Regards ,–Davey2010Talk 09:34, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think that this is single photo of particular van model on Commons. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:07, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Sorry I don't understand you - The van can be identified if it isn't already and the advertisement on the van can be blanked out. Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 20:19, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My point is most likely if van model is well represented - there is no value in adding yet another photo of it and bother with photo-editing. Please also read Commons:Project scope. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 00:56, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
But I don't know if it is well represented because I don't know the vehicle make/model (because the cached image was blurry). Again the image is clearly in project scope - You have a problem with the advertisement so I've said I'll remove the offending material ..... so again could you undelete the file. Like I said I'll send it to DR if that's what you want but either way the image is clearly salvageable. Thanks. –Davey2010Talk 10:27, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Van was completely covered with logo, graphical advertisement and advertisement text. Later is also out of Commons:Project scope. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:30, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Okay are you able to send a picture of it without undeleting it as I'm not sure how much of the van is salvageable and obviously I don't want to have it undeleted if the file isn't as straight foward as I think, Many thanks, –Davey2010Talk 14:44, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No this photo is not salvageable. Just choose other existing van photo for your purposes. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:47, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Van is main subject of photo. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:50, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Looked at the cached version and the van is salvageable so I'll ask another admin to undelete it. The image depicts a van outside of a companies premises on a street so it's in scope - If the image consisted of a zoomed up version of the van than sure I would agree with your deletion but in this specific case as I said the image is salvagable. –Davey2010Talk 14:48, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies edited the original comment whilst you were replying. Sorry but the image is salvagable. Have a great day. –Davey2010Talk 14:50, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I don't understand purpose to argue over photo of non-notable building and van with custom painting. Vehicles are very well covered on Commons. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:52, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright status: File:Soldier from the Finnish People's Army.jpg[edit]

Hi! I have now provided the proper copyright tag. I presume the issue should now be solved. I am a fairly new user, so bear with me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Buttwart (talk • contribs) 22:37, 7 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Are you sure that this photo was taken on Soviet side, not Soviet trophy? Sorry, I could not open book book. It may be reasonable to check Finnish Army archives that are very extensively digitized. If photo was taken in Soviet side, author in description should be marked as unknown (if not credited in book) . --EugeneZelenko (talk) 00:53, 8 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The pictures in the book cannot be found on the Finnish Army archive using the dates, descriptions and locations given. Only the entity who ordered the picture is known, that being The Red Army. • У фотографа есть наследник(и), кто бы мог подтвердить авторство и загрузить в лучшем разрешении? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 21:07, 10 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Commons:OTRS. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 21:27, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
31.202.13.3 08:13, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Я с этим участником не сталкивался и не могу судить о его добросовестности. По поводу авторства и связанных проблем - читайте соответствующие законы России, Украины или любой другой страны на выбор. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:29, 12 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Copyrights for Vril-Ya Bazaar images[edit]

Hi, Eugene. You left a note on my talk page about possible deletion of several images I posted related to the Vril-Ya Bazaar and Fete, held way back in 1891 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Specifically, these are the images:

I'm asking you to remove the deletion notices of these files or tell me how I can do it. I find the upload system for Wikimedia Commons incredibly difficult to use, so I'd prefer that you do it.

Here's why these files are legally permitted on Wikimedia Commons: As I indicated when I uploaded the files, these are long since out of copyright because of their age. All of these are images of items published contemporaneously with the 1891 event. The last item on the bulleted list above is an illustration from an 1891 news article about the event. The other items are images of pages from the programme for the 1891 event published by the event organizers.

The Royal Albert Hall archives department has a physical copy of this old programme. I was able to download a digital copy of the cover (File:Vril-ya bazaar program cover.jpg) from the Royal Albert Hall website, but I wanted to see the entire programme, and so I wrote to the archives department requesting a copy. Here is their emailed response:

Many thanks for your enquiry regarding the 1891 ‘The Coming Race and Vril-Ya Bazaar and Fete’ at the Royal Albert Hall.
Please find below the information that the Hall holds about the event, and additionally please find attached a PDF of selected pages from the programme.
Unfortunately I am unable to send a full copy as the programme is awaiting conservation treatment and too fragile to currently be scanned in full.
Images may only be used for non-commercial purposes and must be captioned ‘Courtesy of Royal Albert Hall Archive. Ref. RAHE/1/1891/5’.

[listing of performers and other information about the event omitted here for brevity.]

The file File:Vril-Ya Bazaar programme pages from RAH.pdf was attached to this email. File:Vril-Ya Bazaar programme - plan of hall.pdf is a single page of the programme that I extracted from the larger file.

In short, all of the images are copyright free because they are all 130 years old. You didn't actually say this in your comment on my talk page, but your edit note indicates your question was why US copyright law was invoked when the works were published in the UK. It's because I didn't see an option in the upload wizard to cite UK law instead, but it is clear from List of Countries' Copyright Lengths that any UK copyright has likewise expired.

The only oddity is that given the courtesy of the staff of the Royal Albert Hall in making the pages from the event programme available, I attempted to oblige their request that the Royal Albert Hall be given a credit for providing the file. I'd be happy for your advice if there's a better way to handle it.

(The only other way I could think of was to ask the staff of the Royal Albert Hall to upload these copyright-free images to Wikimedia Commons themselves and assign a Creative Commons license to them. That is a sub-optimal solution for at least two reasons. First, the Royal Albert Hall themselves doesn't own the copyright to the programme, and thus they can't legally assert ownership in a Creative Commons license. Second, it would be rude to ask the Royal Albert Hall archives staff to undertake the extra effort. They've already been more than generous with their time simply getting us these images.)

--JohnPomeranz (talk) 03:43, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

These images are originated from UK, but US-related license tag was used. You need to fix this mistake. See Commons:Copyright rules by territory. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 03:45, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed on all of these files. Special thanks to JuTa who was kind enough to put the required public domain notice on two of these files (as it was obvious that their age put the images in the public domain) and thus to show me what I needed to do to comply with Wikimedia requirements. While I understand the need to comply with copyright law and applaud the diligent efforts to protect the rights of creators, the complexity of compliance is a huge barrier to participation for casual users of Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons like me. --JohnPomeranz (talk) 15:22, 11 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello EugeneZelenko, Thank you for your notice on the possible Google Earth copyright violation here. I wasn't aware of the derivative works guideline, yet. What are the next steps? do I need to do do something or the deletion procedure will be led by others? --CalliandraDysantha (talk) 18:37, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

If you know how to edit videos, you could cut Google Earth part and re-upload files. Some for other possible copyrighted parts. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 19:27, 20 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you delete "File:DIMES portakal suyu.jpg"? It was my own work. User:Escritor Antonio Antolini[edit]

Hello, I cleaned up a lot files in the category:Antonio Antolini uploaded by new User:Escritor Antonio Antolini. It is quite self-publicity, and I am not sure about the copyrights. Could you give these a closer look. Kind greetings --Havang(nl) (talk) 14:33, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's hard for me to judge about notability, but it's doubtful that writer himself recorded all these videos. Likely some promotional entity did so. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:38, 22 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Olá, EugeneZelenko! Não seria o caso de bloqueio da conta GustavoDortmund (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log? Saudações, --Luan (talk) 14:58, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I don't know Spanish :-( I left final warnings on user's talk page. Through he uploaded a lot of problematic files, this was done in two batches, so I usually block on third occasion. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:04, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Irei enviar nova mensagem à referida conta. Saudações, --Luan (talk) 14:44, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
File:Unifacisa.svg seems {{PD-textlogo}} for me, incorrect licenses could be removed from there. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:47, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Would you please explain, why you delete the file? Thanks --Frank Murmann (talk) 15:31, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

For same reason as File:Logo aerodromedenamur.png - it's non-trivial logo. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:34, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The logo consists of text and a simple geometric form. How much more trivial can a logo be? Frank Murmann (talk) 17:05, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Part of logo consist of gradients, so this makes it non-trivial. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 18:39, 27 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by ChuchoVCJMuzik (talk • contribs) 16:14, 28 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

A query[edit]

Can I use pics from an online newspaper like these? :

Also can i use pics from facebook? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noncreativephotographer (talk • contribs) 09:12, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question from POitor[edit]

Hello EugeneZelenko, You have submitted some of my files for deletion because they are not the pictures I drew, so I have listed the sources from which I took the files. But even after citing sources, my files are submitted for deletion, please tell me why? --POitor (talk) 21:13, 1 May 2021 (UTC)POitor_ARM[reply]

Since you had many problematic files, which group do you mean in this discussion? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 21:28, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
For example- File:Իշխանություն ֆիլմ.jpg, File:Հարսանիք թիկունքում(fillm poster).jpg, File:ԳագիկԾառուկյան.jpg, File:TumoGyumriIMG.jpg and others --(UTC)POitor_ARM — Preceding unsigned comment added by POitor (talk • contribs) 21:42, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
First two files are movie posters. Next two are just taken from Internet. Please read Commons:Licensing and copyrights law of Armenia carefully before making new uploads. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 21:47, 1 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
And why the movie posters were deleted, but I mentioned the sources? --POitor (talk) 02:24, 2 May 2021 (UTC)POitor_ARM[reply]
Availability of something on Internet doesn't assume license compatible with Commons:Licensing. Please read texts mentioned above. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 02:29, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple logos deleted[edit]

I have noticed you have deleted a bunch of logos that I have uploaded onto Wikimedia, flagging them as "c:Commons:Licensing: non-trivial logo", and I want to talk to you to have this issue resolved. I am fairly new at uploading stuff on here and editing on Wikipedia, so if there is something wrong with the way I uploaded those logos, I would like to know and I want to see if there is a way I can have those deleted logos re-instated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hilldoug750057 (talk • contribs) 18:13, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Most likely non-trivial logos copyrighted unless they are in public domain by reason. See Commons:Licensing. However you could upload non-free media locally to projects that allow it, for example, English Wikipedia. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 22:11, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:The Pharmacist.webm[edit]

Hi, Thank you for the heads-up. I created the video myself for the Wiki Loves Africa Competition 2021 with the theme "Health and Wellness". I thought the source had been indicated once I agreed as the license holder before upload. The video is originally my production so I do not see the "derivative work" tag being referred to. I'm new to wikimedia commons upload and this is my first video upload. Any help here is much appreciated. KwesiRaul (talk) 20:06, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What is source and license for music used in video? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 22:09, 2 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Thank you for the prompt response. The background music source is

"Background Music for Videos: https://www.bluetreeaudio.com". I've added that to the description. Hope that is the right way to do it. Your feedback is very much appreciated. KwesiRaul (talk) 02:10, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Please read https://www.bluetreeaudio.com/license carefully. There are limitations incompatible wit Commons:Licensing. You need to remove music to keep video. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 04:59, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've read the information and I realise the licensing issues. Thank you for the links. Rather than just removing the background music if possible I would want to change the music with music that is licensed under Creative commons. However, I can't figure out how to do this. Any help on that please? -- KwesiRaul (talk) 15:02, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Do you still have original (unaltered) video? Obviously, it'll be much easier to add other sound track on it. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:31, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Yes please it's quite easy to do that. I'm sorry for the not too clear question. I was referring to how to change the video on commons to the one with the new music.-- KwesiRaul (talk) 23:06, 7 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You need to reupload new version of file, change description to include information about source/license of music and then request deletion of old version. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 00:23, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I worked at reuploading the new version of the file but I think I've created a new file rather. https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Pharmacist-1.webm. So do I leave the first one to be deleted? Also can you kindly confirm that there are no issues with the music this time round? And finally I guess the video can no longer be a part of the Wiki Loves Africa 2021 competition, right? Thanks a lot for the feedback. I'm available to make any changes to the new one if necessary. Awaiting your feedback. KwesiRaul (talk) 12:33, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

License and text on YouTube are contradictory: CC-BY vs My music is COPYRIGHTED however free to use on social media AS LONG AS credit/attribution is given.; If you wish to use my music for commercial purposes (online advertisements, sponsored advertisements, podcasts etc), you will need to purchase a license. (bold highlighting of incompatibilities with Commons:Licensing is mine). Looks like uploader didn't read CC-BY text or don't know about CC-BY-NC. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:11, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ok. So can we use the background music then? Also is it ok to leave the first one to be deleted? KwesiRaul (talk) 21:14, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think so. But is background music really necessary? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 21:42, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Files from João Silva Wiki[edit]

template editor for User:VRTS Migration Bot[edit]

Dear EugeneZelenko. The bot also has to edit a lot of protected templates, like e.g. Template:PD-Faroe stamps. Can you assign template editor rights temporary for one month? Ok ! Last question . If I download the picture from internet and cropped that particular picture which is download and upload it to Wikipedia commons by selecting the licence tag of self|cc-by-sa-4.0 and mentioning the author as Own Work and at the source as link of picture which was download/extracted .Is it ok or not . Please tell me .Best Regards!(Fade258 (talk) 15:13, 13 May 2021 (UTC))[reply]
No. At first license of original picture must be compatible with Commons:Licensing. You could not claim derivative work as own, but further details depend on original license. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:22, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you So much for spending your valuable time with me. I will contact you again when I need .(Fade258 (talk) 15:30, 13 May 2021 (UTC))[reply]

You uploaded it to wrong place again. License is also wrong. As I wrote already this logo must be uploaded locally to English Wikipedia (in you case) as non-free media. See w:en:File:Lalitpur Patriots.png as example. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 13:55, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Did you read text on w:en:Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard? Yes, I had uploaded the image by this method.I do thisfirst I put the image and proceed to next after that I entered to liscence selecting part and then selected cc-by-sa-3.0but every time I had changed the liscence it is always deleted.Why ?(Fade258 (talk) 14:46, 14 May 2021 (UTC))[reply]
Did you comprehend that file may be uploaded to Commons or locally to English Wikipedia? Non-free media could be uploaded only to later. cc-by-sa-3.0 is wrong claim. Again, please read all text on w:en:File:Lalitpur Patriots.png as well as Commons:Licensing. Sorry, if all this is too complicated for you, please follow direct link above and don't forget to use proper non-free media template. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 14:53, 14 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

OgreBot[edit]

Today I saw your post on Magog the Ogre's talk page. Around this time last year, when Magog had some problems he stopped his bot completely. At that time I was in direct contact with him and he told me "The source code is at: https://bitbucket.org/MagogTheOgre/ogrebot/src/master/. If you download it and spend some time, you should be able to figure things out. You'll need to set up a properties file with passwords and create a few directories." I encouraged him to restart the bot which he kindly did after a short time. I don't know what the current issue is but the link above appears to be fine, so maybe you know someone who would take it on. According to the bit talk page some major database update have been made that require some significant changes to the bot. I don't know anyone like that. Let me know if I can assist in any other way because it is a shame to lose this great service. Ww2censor (talk) 16:38, 13 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
