Open Access resources as an ongoing donation to Commons[edit]

Sorry, I did not get much time to look at your upload needs. I have rather little time lattely and there is still a lot I was planning to do on the Walters upload. However at this point that can wait, so if you still need help, I will look into it. I looked at March_2012_trial_for_batch_upload_to_Wikimedia_Commons.csv file and have some comments:

  • file location - fine
  • author - fine, but a version with a link to somewhere would be better if it is easier split into author_url and author_txt columns
  • description - fine
  • date - A date in YYYY-MM-DD format is what is needed, but it is an easy conversion
  • link to source page - I do not understand it. I was expecting an url to some page with the picture.
  • commons categories - fine, although I do not think we need "Media from ZooKeys" - if all files have it we can hardwire it
  • Licensing - fine

I guess we would still need a column with filenames to be used on Commons. We could use names like "ZooKeys-171-001-g001.jpg" but most commons users like descriptive names. We could use names like Acroceridae wings - ZooKeys-171-001-g001.jpg. --Jarekt (talk) 02:42, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jarek,
thanks for the comments, and yes, your help with getting this workflow set up would still be appreciated. My comments on your comments:
author: the link is provided by way of the DOI (e.g. doi:10.3897/zookeys.171.2137). Most authors won't have a Wikipedia entry.
date: OK, will fix that.
link to source: again, the link is provided through the DOI.
commons categories: Yes, Media from ZooKeys can now be dropped, as this is done by {{ZooKeys-License}}
file names: OK, will try to implement the Acroceridae wings - ZooKeys-171-001-g001.jpg variety.
Will get back to you when done. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 03:02, 17 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering if it's possible to have a script that looks at whether a species page on Wikispecies does not have an image and an image is available Commons (especially if the image comes from ZooKeys journal). I do recall the back in 2007, a similar script [1] identifies images on Commons which the corresponding biography's page does not have an image. Do you know who could write a similar script? OhanaUnitedTalk page 05:52, 26 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nice idea. Have you asked User:emijrp whether he could provide and possibly even modify that code? -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 05:02, 27 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please can you indicate where you found the license for the above file. I followed all the links in the description, and none gave a clear license that I could see. --99of9 (talk) 12:55, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The final frame in the video states CC BY, as does the YouTube page (if you hit "more"). -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 13:08, 29 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel, Above is the code I was thinking about to use for the upload. Would you be able to run it? --Jarekt (talk) 02:27, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jarek, thanks! However, I'm not sure how I am supposed to run that code - I would know how to use it as part of a PyWikipediaBot installation, but I don't have one for Commons, and this would still require bot permission for me. Or is there a way to get JarektUploadBot to do it for me? -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 01:30, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, Do you have a version of the csv file with filenames, like "Acroceridae wings - ZooKeys-171-001-g001.jpg", see here --Jarekt (talk) 02:40, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, but see email. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 02:58, 18 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I uploaded a few images, see Category:File with non-existing species category. See User:JarektUploadBot/Upload_Open_Access_Images.py. If they are OK I will add the rest. --Jarekt (talk) 11:04, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I checked them all. Looks good, and that additional category was helpful. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 14:39, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
All uploaded now. Let me know if you have more. --Jarekt (talk) 16:59, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot! I've done them all. Will get back to you when more is available. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 21:42, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Any progress with those? --Jarekt (talk) 15:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing concrete, apart from some long-term strategic thoughts. I am currently concentrating on User:Open Access Media Importer Bot. Once this bot works fine (we're not there yet - see here for latest details, and I still have no idea how to operate the thing via the toolserver or Labs eventually), it would transfer suitable files from PubMed Central onto Commons. In quite a few cases, this may not be enough, since (a) the full record at PMC is often not available before some weeks after original publication and (b) not all journals are indexed in PMC. For these cases a and b, I am thinking of ways to use your upload scheme (or something very similar) as an alternative, but I haven't yet thought this through, nor asked publishers for further sample files. Would welcome your views on that. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 15:35, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
A bot continuously running on a toolserver would be ideal. I also have no idea how to operate a bot via toolserver. Is there a way to create csv files automatically, based on the available data, for the cases when csv-bases upload scheme is used? --Jarekt (talk) 18:44, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know of a way to generate a generic automated upload workflow other than via PubMed Central, which the OAMI uses. For our purposes, it will have to be specific to the publisher (or perhaps even journal). I'll see what the possibilities are. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 23:01, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Daniel Mietchen, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Media of the day[edit]

Hello,

When you add a new media of the day, please copy the English description, and add descriptions in other languages as possible. Also it is best not to add the same kind of media on consecutive days. Thanks, Yann (talk) 18:51, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I am traveling these days and thus offline, but plan to do the descriptions tonight. I agree about the consecutive days in principle, but that week is Open Access Week, so I thought featuring some Open Access materials would be OK. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 19:53, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Category misspelling[edit]

Category:Biophysic al simulations (for example on this file) should be Category:Biophysical simulations. --99of9 (talk) 04:04, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the notification. This typo affects over 500 PLOS papers and will have to be corrected manually for the time being (just did it once for everything already imported), unless we allow a redirect. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 07:41, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Don't do it manually. If you can't code it easily pre-upload, then we can just temporarily create the bad category and hotcat or category move to the good one. --99of9 (talk) 09:11, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I have notified PLOS. By "manually", I meant HotCat, but I'd personally prefer a redirect. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 09:30, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Uploading from Plos One[edit]

I haven't delved into the source, but how thorough is the spider of pubmed central? Figures from Plos One don't all seem to be uploading. Could you scrape Plos One directly? Also, you should add a {{User bot master}} to your userpage.Smallman12q (talk) 19:54, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The bot is not meant to upload images - it only does audio and video at the moment. Did you have some specific PLOS images in mind? I can help with getting these up here. I have added the bot master template to my user page - thanks for the hint. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 20:01, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a reason only audio/video is uploaded? Images would be more likely to be used and are more abundant.Smallman12q (talk) 22:09, 16 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The main reason is that most figures in journal articles are charts and plots of kinds that are very rarely used in Wikimedia projects even if available from Commons. I am envisioning here a functionality similar to Flickr2Commons, where the transfer of specific files can be triggered manually and performed by a bot, but this has not been coded yet. Would you be interested in giving it a shot? -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 10:49, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I could write something like that for individual PLOS articles (I wrote a NCBI bookshelf scraper for Stembook). However, before I do that, perhaps there's a more automated way? If you want to upload only pictures/photographs, you could check the number of colors used in the image. We could create a set with only the color images and upload that automatically. Additionally, most of the tables are labeled as "Table x". One of the problems is that a number of the images are A/B/C/D in one image, so to be properly used, they'd need to be split into 4 different photographs. Doing it by article will be very slow.Smallman12q (talk) 13:27, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Some good illustrations are black and white, so counting colours won't work. Tables are doable, but also not generally useful, so better imported on demand. Composite figures are really annoying indeed, and why I wrote "main reason" above: they are completely unnecessary in electronic publications, and they make it difficult (sometimes impossible) to extract something useful from them. I'm adding a quick selection here:
How would you tackle these algorithmically? -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 19:14, 17 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd also like to see the images done. I think high quality charts are still worth it even if they're not used often, because when you do want to use them, they're often very time-consuming to prepare from scratch. The composite images can be split at a later date, but it would be worth tagging them as such. --99of9 (talk) 00:24, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see an easy way to tag files as composite figures but I agree that putting up composite figures can be useful sometimes, in that they act as pointers to the individual subfigures which may be used in more specific contexts. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 01:03, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You've illustrated your point well=P. Composites separated by definitive white/black lines could be semi-automatically cropped (auto-display guidelines where to crop). Unfortunately, the description would not be so easy to parse...if it could be separated at all. Is it worthwhile to upload composite images? Some figures cannot be separated without losing meaning (such as when showing zoomed in portions). Should tables/charts not be uploaded...how would their mass deletion be handled? We could do a stream of thumbnails of what to upload/not upload/what's a composite with some centralized db serving out fresh batches and keeping track of already processed images. Ideally, there'll also be a browser based cropper (javascript w/html5 or flash). What are your thoughts on this?Smallman12q (talk) 00:34, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, splitting the images in a useful manner is challenging in and of itself, but coordinating this with a suitable arrangement of the captions (simple splitting will often not do) is a common deal breaker here. For tables and charts, I do not have a strong opinion, just the observation that they would rarely fit in as they are. Options for mass deletion can probably be handled by way of categories. The "centralized db serving out fresh batches and keeping track of already processed images" sounds interesting, and while we have implemented a version of that for the multimedia files, I see quite some room for improvement, which would all transfer to images. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 01:03, 20 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So there are one of two ways to do this:
  1. Upload everything to commons, and sort it out/delete from here.
  2. Create a separate stream/db to serve new images and have folks determine what stays/goes from there and upload to commons. Keep log what stays/goes/new/old/etc.
Which way should we do it (and then we can go from there)? Maybe file an RFC? Smallman12q (talk) 01:43, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think there is a third way: Have people decide on a case by case basis which files to import, and then do the import automatically, just like Flickr2Commons does (if the toolserver is working). The weakness of this approach is that it does not allow for easy browsing of the candidate material (though the BioText search engine comes close). -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 07:52, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That's pretty much option 2. I'll try and write something up this week.Smallman12q (talk) 15:06, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds cool - looking forward to it! I assume you are basing your code on that of the OAMI, which has been designed in a modular fashion, so as to allow for extensions like this. If not, please explain why. Thanks! -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 23:58, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I looked at it OAMI, but I'm not entirely sure I need that much code for this. I intend to scrape OA Web Service for web records that were updated that day, and then look for image figures in the .nxml file of the .tar.gz link. I transform the figure description to wikicode, and extract the graphic out of the zip file. Is there something wrong with this method? Also, is there a reason you chose to use urllib directly instead of a wrapper such as requests?Smallman12q (talk) 12:13, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you would build it as an OAMI plugin, you would only have to write a function that downloads the given data and a function that looks for image figures, OAMI does the rest. You may not be aware of the fact that other metadata in the .nxml files requires various workarounds: For example, figure caption, title and summary are often not consistent and licensing data may be in plain text, inconsistent or even wrong. I know requests, but do not see which problem it could solve here – simple indirection is not abstraction. Nils Dagsson Moskopp 89.204.130.118 20:08, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, in that case it'd be better to use OAMI. The documentation seems a bit lacking (maybe it's me) and it seems I'd need to call a specific script and redirect/parse its output (it's not very OOP friendly)? This is the skeleton of what I need to do:

articles = list of articles from a date
for article in articles
    articletitle = article.title
    articlejournal = article.journal
    .
    .
    .
    licensecheck()
    for figure in article.figures
if figure.format in [list of image formats]
            AddFigureToDB()

If OAMI can get me there faster, great.Smallman12q (talk) 23:54, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The documentation is, in fact, lacking. OAMI has different „sources“ that all implement two functions, download_metadata() and list_materials(). On a more in-depth look it seems we already do iterate over the <fig> elements <https://github.com/erlehmann/open-access-media-importer/blob/master/sources/pmc.py#L555> – if that was done correctly (I have to test it), we probably just discard the results for now.
Checked it, <fig> results get discarded when OAMI cannot find a <media> element in it, but a <graphic> element. Stand by.
I got promising results under the somewhat questionable assumption that figures always contain JPEG images. Please look at this patch <https://github.com/erlehmann/open-access-media-importer/commit/03eda6fba6b52665bfc8fd241fe40b4c64ae83d9> and suggest improvements. I also suggest you download the figure branch and do the following:
./oa-cache clear-database pmc_doi
./oami_pmc_doi_import_test
./oa-cache browse-database pmc_doi

I am pretty sure that media conversion and uploading filter out everything that is not audio/video, but that could be overcome easily.

You should add to install the dependencies, you need:

sudo apt-get install python-gobject python-dateutil python-elixir python-gst0.10 python-magic python-magic python-mutagen python-progressbar python-xdg When I tried, './oa-cache clear-database pmc_doi', it requested the userconfig file. So I put in the example one. It then states that the userconfig is missing the 'whitelist' section. Is the whitelist section and associated options documented? What should the userconfig be? I could dig into the source, but you should document your code.Smallman12q (talk) 02:39, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll start doing that now.

Hello, I proposed something, that could partly help with some composite images: meta:2016_Community_Wishlist_Survey/Categories/Multimedia#ImageNote_template_as_parameter_of_File. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Thanks for checking, but the file is taken from the indicated article, which is clearly labeled as CC BY 2.0 (just click on the doi link to confirm). Since that license is not available through the upload wizard without the flickrreview template, I chose that, and then forgot to remove it. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 14:09, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reply from Dcrjsr at WikiProject Biophysics[edit]

Thanks for the ideas on open source projects & collaborations. I like the circular permutation article very much! I'll see if I can come up with some feasible lines of attack - but for now, the project and the contest are probably all I should try to manage.

Another question: I have indeed heard that PLoS figures have open licenses compatible with Commons, and your role there certainly confirms that. However, I'd combed their web site and could not find a statement anywhere of what their license actually is. Can you tell me that, and perhaps also point me to where the documentation for it is? I'd like to set our BPS folks to using those. Thanks! Dcrjsr (talk) 03:25, 8 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much! Clearly my mistake was looking on the journal website rather than on the journal pages themselves. 152.16.15.76 23:22, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Pay attention to copyright
File:Lithoscaptus helleri from Indonesia with unidentified bopyrid in left branchial chamber - journal.pone.0035350.g001-G.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hello, Daniel. In explanation of the form template above, I wanted to say that, unfortunately, we have received an official complaint about this image from Sancia van der Meij (Ticket:2013050910007498) who denies the license or having granted permission to upload this material here. I see that you asserted permission but you do not seem to have forwarded that permission to the Wikimedia Foundation. Please be sure if you have uploaded other images under assertion of permission that you forward a copy of each to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org and place the following on the images: {{Otrs pending}}. Commons:Declaration of consent for all enquiries is a good template to use. It is essential that we retain these for our records to avoid misunderstandings. Sancia van der Meij has requested the deletion of this image as soon as possible, and it has been accordingly flagged for removal. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at my talk page. Thanks. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 15:00, 9 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the notification and the explanation, but I am not sure where exactly the problem is. If you check the source that I had indicated, you will see that this is an article in an Open access journal, clearly labeled as being licensed CC BY 2.5. If you then go to Figure 1, you will see that it states "Photographs used by permission of ... Sancia van der Meij (G)" - that is the permission I referred to. Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing the terms of the permission that Sancia van der Meij gave to the authors of the paper, but since no different licensing is indicated, I think it is fair to assume (see also the footer of the page) that the CC BY 2.5 license also applies to her photo. My suspicion is that the authors have asked her for permission to use the photograph in their upcoming "Parasitic Isopods Associated with Crustacean Hosts" paper, which she gave, not being aware of the licensing and/ or the implications thereof, possibly not even knowing that the article would go to PLOS ONE (possibly after a rejection elsewhere). Please forward her email to me, so I can follow up. Thanks! -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 02:16, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. As I mention in response to your email, I'm afraid I can't forward her email to you due to the rules of OTRS, but I'll happy if you like to pass your email address to her. Meanwhile, she indicates she is corresponding with PLOS and I believe she understands that her issue is with them. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 10:22, 10 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Net fishing on Aitutaki Island, Cook Islands - journal.pbio.1001387.g002.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

PLoS Bilder - Umbennennung[edit]

Hallo Daniel,

  • Acanthamoeba Polyphaga Mimivirus APMV - detail - journal.ppat.1000087.g007.png

PS:
Ich hab die ergänzten Abbildungs-Texte aus den PLoS-Original-Artikeln deutlich gekürzt. Darf man die in der WM eigentlich 1:1 übernehmen?
Jaybear...disc.20:32, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

-- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 20:50, 16 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hochgeladen hat die mein Bot. Aber ja, der ganze Artikel steht unter CC BY 2.5, also koennen die Bilder auch verwendet werden (gern auch gecropped usw.). Sag Bescheid, wenn Du dabei Hilfe brauchst. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 12:37, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

-- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 00:15, 25 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wiki session at Biophysical Society[edit]

I've gotten the meeting organizers to schedule the wiki session for Sunday afternoon Feb 16, 2:15-3:30. Can I tell them you'll be there as a local expert on open media & wiki editing? They'll provide you with a free one-day registration. The session will soon be advertised in the Biophysical Society newsletter. You'd also be very welcome & appreciated at the dinner we'll have for the 4 of our 6 contest winners who'll be at the meeting, along with wiki folks from the society (probably Sun evening, perhaps Sat). I can also now send out a sensible message to the SF group to see if anyone else is interested in coming - perhaps some of the local SF grad students & postdocs might end up joining the group. At the society's Council meeting last Sat they agreed unanimously to make meeting photographs taken by the society's photographers open license, as feasible, and will try to persuade entrants in their yearly image contest to do likewise. If you're willing to share your email, that would make talking much easier. Mine is jane.richardson@duke.edu. Dcrjsr (talk) 05:04, 6 November 2013 (UTC)

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Picture of the Year 2013 Results[edit]

The 2013 Picture of the Year. View all results »

Dear Daniel Mietchen,

The 2013 Picture of the Year competition has ended and we are pleased to announce the results: We shattered participation records this year — more people voted in Picture of the Year 2013 than ever before. In both rounds, 4070 different people voted for their favorite images. Additionally, there were more image candidates (featured pictures) in the contest than ever before (962 images total).

  • In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files
  • In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

We also sincerely thank to all 4070 voters for participating and we hope you will return for next year's contest in early 2015. We invite you to continue to participate in the Commons community by sharing your work.

Help on issue with Molecule-of-the-Month images[edit]

After uploading & using a few of them myself, last week I used that as the opening exercise for a class that will be doing uploads & editing as part of their class projects. It mostly went very well, but a couple of us had an interesting hangup I don't know how to get around, including for my choice of a class-demo image, the 4-part SODs from the Superoxide dismutase MotM. Upload failed at the end with a message saying this couldn't be done because there was already an image with the same content which had been deleted (presumably earlier, before the licensing was changed). It gave no option for appealing the block. Can you advise me how this can be corrected, preferably in general for the MotM images, or at least one at a time when the problem recurs? I, and the class, would be very appreciative of your help, especially since it seems a good percentage of these images were desired and frustrated already. 50.105.30.86 14:40, 29 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

newmaps number[edit]

Sorry the bot removed the newmaps number, that you tried to re-instate diff.

It's my fault really, down to lazy coding. Essentially I'm relying on the script being restarted every 12 hours or so, with a new session key for getting the number of map tags information from Flickr. In this case I didn't restart it soon enough, so the session key had expired, and it could no longer read the number of tags. I ought to be using a more sophisticated negotiation with Flickr, but tool-labs where the script runs doesn't have the perl Flickr::API module installed, so I have just gone on doing things this way. If it's very annoying, I can install the module in my own user space, but I haven't done that yet.

Hope that explains why the maps number disappeared (and then why the bot over-wrote you again after less than 10 minutes),

All best, Jheald (talk) 09:43, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's what I assumed after the bot overwrote me. So no worries - no need to make the code more complex just for this cosmetic change. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 11:04, 12 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Malaria[edit]

Hi, hope you can help. I was trying to tidy Category:Malaria, and wondered if you can help - what is the difference between Category:Falciparum malaria and Category:Plasmodium falciparum in terms of Commons? From my understanding one is the illness, the other the reason for it? From my understanding, this would indicate that the files currently in Falciparum malaria should actually be in Plasmodium falciparum (and it should link to Malaria), but as I'm no expert, I hope you can help :) And I take it Category:Plasmodium life cycle‎ would be better within Plasmodium falciparum? Hope that makes sense - thanks for your help. -- Deadstar (msg) 09:27, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
Wikimedia Commons does not accept fair use content.

We do this because Commons is a shared media repository. Downstream wikis have different policies based on local laws. Uses that are acceptable under US law, for example, may not be acceptable in many other countries with more restrictive rules.

In addition, fair use is not compatible with our aim as a collection of freely distributable media files.

Therefore, Commons cannot legally rely on fair use provisions.

Non-free content that may be used with reference to fair use may be uploaded locally if your project allows this.

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Daniel Mietchen,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Bot imported avi as ogv[edit]

Hi, I came across this file. It doesn't want to transcode, and if I download the file, I get an AVI file. The source link also points at a .avi file. Might want to add a check for that ? —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 21:15, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@TheDJ: Thanks for checking. The source is indeed an AVI file but the Commons copy looks properly transcoded to me and downloads properly as OGV. Can you be a bit more specific? -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:22, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ooops linked the wrong file: should have been this one. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 00:19, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Concepts in molecular biology[edit]

Hi Daniel Mietchen,

in the moment I'm trying to clean up the category tree in molecular biology. As the creator of the categories you might know it best: What's the difference between Category:Immunological signaling and Category:Immunologic receptor signaling‎?

Additionally there is a loop between Category:Immunologic receptors and Category:Immunologic receptor signaling‎.--Buergerberg (talk) 17:29, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Receptors are membrane-bound, but not all signalling is. So Category:Immunologic receptor signaling‎ should be (and is) in Category:Immunological signaling. As for the loop, that looks resolved to me. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 17:44, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
What about overcategorization? Both Category:Immunologic receptors and Category:Immunologic receptor signaling‎ were in Category:Signal transduction.--Buergerberg (talk) 18:15, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't find it odd that Category:Immunologic receptors and Category:Immunologic receptor signaling‎ were in Category:Signal transduction, but yes, overcategorization is worth keeping in mind with these things, so if you want to bring these categories more in line with others of similar scope, please go ahead. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 18:26, 27 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to the Structured Commons focus group![edit]

Hello! Thank you very much for signing up to the community focus group for Structured Commons :-)

How to organize ourselves?

This focus group is new and experimental, and I welcome your tips and thoughts on how we can organize this in the most convenient and productive way. For now, I have posted a few separate topics on the focus group's talk page. Please add your questions there too! If we all add that page to our watchlist, that's probably a good way to stay up to date with current discussions. Steinsplitter has also initiated a brand new IRC channel specifically for Structured Commons: wikimedia-commons-sd (webchat) which we invite you to join. Please let me know if you have other ideas on how to work together.

Hello! You are receiving this message because you signed up for the community focus group for Structured Commons :-)

Later this week, a full newsletter will be distributed, but you are the first to receive an update on new requests for feedback.

Three requests for feedback
  1. We received many additions to the spreadsheet that collects important Commons and Wikidata tools. Thank you! Now, you can participate in a survey that helps us understand and prioritize which tools and functionalities are most important for the Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata communities. The survey runs until December 22. Here's some background.
  2. Help the team decide on better names for 'captions' and 'descriptions'. You can provide input until January 3, 2018.
  3. Help collect interesting Commons files, to prepare for the data modelling challenges ahead! Continuous input is welcome there.

What properties does Commons need?[edit]

Greetings,

Structured Commons will need properties to make statements about files. The development team is working on making the software ready to support properties; the question is, what properties does Commons need?

You can find more information and examples to help find properties in a workshop on Commons. Please participate and help fill in the list, and let me know if you have any questions. Thanks! -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:53, 28 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for checking, HLHJ, but Open Access Media Importer Bot has only ever done video and audio files, no images, and it is not operational anyway, nor is its sister bot, User:Recitation-bot, which did cover images. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 00:53, 24 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Multilingual captions beta testing[edit]

The Structured Data on Commons team has begun beta testing of the first feature, multilingual file captions, and all community members are invited to test it out. Captions is based on designs discussed with the community[5][6] and the team is looking forward to hearing about testing. If all goes well during testing, captions will be turned on for Commons around the second week of January, 2019.

Multilingual captions are plain text fields that provide brief, easily translatable details of a file in a way that is easy to create, edit, and curate. Captions are added during the upload process using the UploadWizard, or they can be added directly on any file page on Commons. Adding captions in multiple languages is a simple process that requires only a few steps.

The details:

  • There is a help page available on how to use multilingual file captions.
  • Testing will take place on Beta Commons. If you don’t yet have an account set up there, you’ll need one.
  • Beta Commons is a testbed, and not configured exactly like the real Commons site, so expect to see some discrepancies with user interface (UI) elements like search.
  • Structured Data introduces the potential for many important page changes to happen at once, which could flood the recent changes list. Because of this, Enhanced Recent Changes is enabled as it currently is at Commons, but with some UI changes.
  • Feedback and commentary on the file caption functionality are welcome and encouraged on the discussion page for this post.
  • Some testing has already taken place and the team are aware of some issues. A list of known issues can be seen below.
  • If you discover a bug/issue that is not covered in the known issues, please file a ticket on Phabricator and tag it with the “Multimedia” tag. Use this link to file a new task already tagged with "Multimedia."

Known issues:

Thanks!

Structured Data - file captions coming this week (January 2019)[edit]

Hi all, following up on last month's announcement...

Multilingual file captions will be released this week, on either Wednesday, 9 November or Thursday, 10 November 2019. Captions are a feature to add short, translatable descriptions to files. Here's some links you might want to look follow before the release, if you haven't already:

  1. Read over the help page for using captions - I wrote the page on mediawiki.org because captions are available for any MediaWiki user, feel free to host/modify a copy of the page here on Commons.
  2. Test out using captions on Beta Commons.
  3. Leave feedback about the test on the captions test talk page, if you have anything you'd like to say prior to release.

Additionally, there will be an IRC office hour on Thursday, 10 January with the Structured Data team to talk about file captions, as well as anything else the community may be interested in. Date/time conversion, as well as a link to join, are on Meta.

Thanks for your time, I look forward to seeing those who can make it to the IRC office hour on Thursday. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Editable research cycle.svg. This media is missing permission information.

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Structured Data - development update, March 2019[edit]

This text is also posted on the Structured Data hub talk page. You can reply there with questions, comments, or concerns.

A development update for the current work by the Structured Data on Commons team:

After the release of multilingual file captions, work began on getting depicts and other statements ready for release. These were originally scheduled for release in February and into March, however there are currently two major blockers to finishing this work (T215642, T217157). We will know more next week about when depicts and statements can likely be ready for testing and then release; until then I've tentatively updated the release schedule.

Once the depicts feature is ready for testing, it will take place in two stages on TestCommons. The first is checking the very basics; is the design comfortable, how does the simple workflow of adding/editing/removing statements work, and building up help and process pages from there. The second part is a more detailed test of depicts and other statements, checking the edge-case examples of using the features, bugs that did not come up during simple testing, etc. Additionally we'll be looking with the community for bugs in interaction with bots, gadgets, and other scripts once the features are live on Commons. Please let me know if you're interesting in helping test and fix these bugs if they show up upon release, it is really hard to find them in a test environment or, in some cases, bugs won't show up in a testing environment at all.

One new thing is definitely coming within the next few weeks, pending testing: the ability to search for captions. This is done using the inlabel keyword in search strings, and will be the first step in helping users find content that is specifically structured data. I'll post a notice when that feature is live and ready for use.

Thanks, let me know if you have questions about these plans. Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:34, 12 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data - early depicts testing[edit]

The Structured Data on Commons development team has the very basic version of depicts statements available for early testing on Test-Commons. You can add very basic depicts statements to the file page by going into the new “Structured Data” tab located below the "Open in Media Viewer button." You can use the Latest Files link in the left side nav bar to select existing images, or use the UploadWizard to upload new ones to test with (although those images won’t actually show up on the site). The test site is not a fully functional replica of Commons, so there may be some overall problems in using the site, but you should be able to get a general idea of what using the feature is like.

Early next week I will call for broad, community-wide testing of the feature similar to what we did for Captions, with instructions for testing, known bugs, and a dedicated space to discuss the feature as well as a simple help page for using statements. Until then, you're welcome to post on the SDC talk page with what you might find while testing depicts.

Thanks in advance for trying it out, you'll be hearing more from me next week. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 21:59, 21 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data - testing qualifiers for depicts[edit]

As you might have seen, testing is underway for adding qualifiers to depicts statements. If you have not left feedback already, the Structured Data on Commons development team is very interested in hearing about your experience using qualifiers on the file page and in the UploadWizard. To get started you can visit Test-Commons and chose a random file to test out, or upload your own file to try out the UploadWizard. Questions, comments, and concerns can be left on the Structured data talk page and the team will address them as best as they can. Thank you for your time. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 11 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data on Commons - IRC office hours this week, 18 July[edit]

The Structured Data team is hosting an IRC office hour this week on Thursday, 18 July, from 17:00-18:00 UTC. Joining information as well as date and time conversion is available on Meta. Potential topics for discussion are the testing of "other statements", properties that may need to be created for Commons on Wikidata soon, plans for the rest of SDC development, or whatever you might want to discuss. The development team looks forward to seeing you there. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:51, 16 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data - testing other statements[edit]

You can now test using other statements for structured data on the file page on Test-Commons. Some datatypes are not yet available, such a coordinates, but further support will be extended soon. You can find more information about testing on the SDC talk page. The team looks forward to your feedback. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 16:41, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Category discussion warning

Category:Circuit_idea has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging[edit]

The development team is starting work on one of the last planned features for SDC v1.0, a lightweight tool to suggest depicts tags for images. I've published a project page for it, please have a look. I plan to share this page with everyone on Commons much more broadly in the coming days. The tool has been carefully designed to try to not increase any workload on Commons volunteers; for starters, it will be opt-in for auto-confirmed users only and will not generate any sort of backlog here on Commons. Additionally, the tool is highly privacy-minded for the contributors and publicly-minded for the third party being used, in this case Google. The implementation and usage notes contain more information about these and other potential concerns as a starting place. It's really important that the tool is implemented properly from the start, so feedback is welcome. Questions, comments, concerns are welcome on the talk page and I will get answers as quickly as possible as things come up. On the talk page you can also sign up to make sure you're a part of the feedback for designs and prototype testing. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 17:57, 17 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

your uploads[edit]

-- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 12:22, 18 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Daniel. I have nominated the files in this category for speedy deletion as they are exact duplicates of the files in Category:Global Climate Strike in Atlanta, 17 March 2019, and it appears that the upload tool failed to detect the preexisting duplicates. Category:Derivative versions[edit]

--WaldiWuff (talk) 20:31, 4 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Structured Data - computer-aided tagging designs[edit]

I've published a design consultation for the computer-aided tagging tool. Please look over the page and participate on the talk page. If you haven't read over the project page, it might be helpful to do so first. The tool will hopefully be ready by the end of this month (October 2019), so timely feedback is important. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 18:09, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks![edit]

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at Wikimedia Commons.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

Pensoft Publishers media[edit]

Hello Daniel, I noticed that User:Recitation-bot (now blocked) have uploaded images from free articles, such as this file. Me too, I upload images from Pensoft, I create categories for each articles, such as this one, linked to Wikidata, and to Wikispecies. To makes my uploads I generates XML files, but I do it manually and this very very tedious. I wonder if you are aware of a tool to help me, or if a BOT would be able to generate for me XML files for specific journals and specific periods. Thanks you. Regards, Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:53, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Christian, the code for the bot still sits here, and it makes use of a JATS-to-Mediawiki converter but that workflow was far from perfect, which got us blocked. Are you aware of Scholia? It provides scholarly profiles, e.g. this one for ZooKeys. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 18:50, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the links, sadly I'm not able to understand programming language. For Scholia, that is interesting, but not really what I need, the thing that I would want would be a list of the URLs of the medias (with the associated descriptions would be even better) by articles, because actually I take the infos manually from the articles, enter the infos in a table, convert the table to XML, and then make a batch upload. My problem is that it is time consuming, and the articles are published quite faster (and there is a lot of articles, and of journals!) Thanks anyway for your answer. Christian Ferrer (talk) 19:58, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Christian Ferrer: Maybe Plazi and the Biodiversity Literature Repository are worth a look here then. Pinging User:Myrmoteras too. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 20:34, 1 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Plazi has useful links to upload Darwin Core Archives about specific articles but don't host images, as far I see. Biodiversity Literature Repository host images at Zenodo, but I don't see how to export the lists of files, and the informations needed. I will try to contact someone at Pensoft. Thanks you. Media from scholarly journals[edit]

Hello, this is a message also to @Animalparty: . As you may have noticed I regularly upload medias from various scholarly journals. I create for each articles a category which is linked to the corresponding item in Wikidata, and in almost case, which is linked to the reference page for the article in Wikispecies. Example:

I do that for several other journals such as Subterranean Biology which will be complete in my next batch upload.

I want to know, as I often see your names around this kind of contribution about scholarly journals if you have some comments to make. Specially for uploads made by others than me, sometimes by you. I explain, as example File:Dongodytes fowleri.jpg was uploaded by Animalparty with {{ZooKeys-License}}, then me I uploaded within one of my batch-uploads the other files (from the article) which were not still in Commons, such File:Dongodytes (10.3897-zookeys.772.25803) Figure 6.jpg. After that I add to the files that were already here the category for the article. I just wanted to know if you have comments about the fact that such files are now overcategorized, with "Media from ZooKeys" and with "Media from Yang, Huang and Tian 2018 - 10.3897/zookeys.772.25803" which is also a part of "Media from ZooKeys". I did my best with the English langage, and I hope you understood. Christian Ferrer (talk) 07:18, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Christian Ferrer Thanks for your work in this area. Yes, such overcategorization is not ideal, but since the journal-level categorization for ZooKeys comes in via template, I think it is acceptable. I used to hide journal-level categories (in part for that reason), but that has been changed, and I'm fine with that. In terms of other things to consider:
  1. As for Commons uploads from scholarly articles, I suggest to make sure that
    • there is a Wikidata item for the paper (the old SourceMD might be useful here), properly tagged with
      • the taxon in question as main subject
      • ideally some other main subjects (e.g. taxonomy, ecology, location)
      • an image/ video/ audio file from the paper
      • the corresponding Commons category for the scholarly article
    • the Commons category for the scholarly article
      • is sub-categorized under the Commons category for the journal
      • is categorized under the respective Commons category for each taxon for which media from the paper appear on Commons, or at least under appropriate parent taxa
      • is tagged with {{Wikidata Infobox}}
    • the Commons category for the individual image
      • is sub-categorized under the Commons category for the scholarly article
      • is categorized under the respective Commons category for each taxon depicted
  2. Once in Wikidata, further curation involves tagging of
    • items about individual publications
      • what their authors were
      • main subjects
      • citations to and from
    • items about authors
      • where they were educated
      • what their affiliations are/were
      • field of work
      • prizes
      • etc.
    • relevant Scholia profiles more generally, e.g. about
      • the taxa (both as taxa and as topics)
      • the authors
      • relevant institutions, journals, awards, events, funders, genes, proteins, pathways etc.
That latter Wikidata part is a big part of my wiki actitivities these days, and I am happy to help if you run into issues. Si l'anglais pose des problèmes, tu es bienvenu à m'écrire en français.
Où peut-on trouver le code que tu utilises pour ça?
A+ -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 16:46, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer, I prefer English as it is easy to understand for the majority. For the part 1, that is exactly what I am doing. I'm not able to run a script or a BOT, therefore my work is almost done manually, this is why I searched help in the past, but did not find.
  • I create XML files from Excel files where I have copied and pasted the infos needed, this part doesn't take me long than that although a little.
  • I make small batch-uploads of near 150 images inside Category:Media from Pensoft (to be sorted out), as example an image is upladed in this state File:Cavichiana alpina (10.3897-zoologia.37.e38783) Figures 11–22.jpg
  • I check if there is an entry for the article in Wikispecies, that is helpful as the authors are linked to Wikidata,
  • I search with the DOI if there is an entry in Wikidata, then usualy the authors are in a string field, and thanks to Wikispecies I replace the strings values by items.
  • I create the category here and I link every thing one each other, (Commons, Wikidata, Wikispecies)
  • I create the taxa categories or i let the red links and categorize the files with the higher taxa categories available
  • if there is no entry anywhere, I create the item myself, though I don't search or create the items for the authors, excepted when a taxon description is involved.
  • I never touch to the references
A thing that I can do, hence my fisrt question, is that I can replace {{ZooKeys-License}} by the corresponding license template, once I have created the category for the article. That will make disapprear the overcategorisation.
  • Creation of categories for taxa, and creation of items for the articles that are not yet existing is what is the more time consuming. The creation of the XML files is acceptable. As long as you edit Wikidata, one thing that could possibly help me, is that you create the items for articles when they are not yet existing. I can provide a list of the DOIs before each batch-uploads. Christian Ferrer (talk) 17:36, 12 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In terms of creating items based on DOIs, the old SourceMD is probably the best option you could use at this point. Depending on server load, it can handle between about ten and a hundred DOIs at a time. Note that User:Succu is also running a bot that curates Wikidata items about taxonomic publications. For author disambiguation, there is a dedicated tool that has become quite sophisticated, the Author Disambiguator, which can work on the basis of an author name string, a paper or an author item. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 22:46, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks you very much for SourceMD, I didn't know it, I just tried it. It will be very useful. Christian Ferrer (talk) 15:54, 26 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wei Zhang[edit]

Hi, sorry to disturb you again, if you are used to deal with Wikidata and scholarly articles, can you find the item corresponding to Wei Zhang who is listed as author in Reverse taxonomy applied to the Brachionus calyciflorus cryptic species complex: Morphometric analysis confirms species delimitations revealed by molecular phylogenetic analysis and allows the (re)description of four species (Q58713712), please? Thanks you, Christian Ferrer (talk) 21:22, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Christian Ferrer: I could not find an existing one that was a clear fit, so I created a new one and added it. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 22:37, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Commons - Media Search[edit]

Greetings,

The Structured Data team is working on an alternative, image-focused prototype for media search on Commons. The prototype uses categories, structured data as well as wikitext from Commons, and Wikidata to find its results. The development team would like your feedback on the prototype, as they are looking to work to further enhance the search experience on Commons. If you have a moment, please look over the project page set up on Commons to find a link to the prototype and leave your feedback on the talk page. Thanks for your time, I'll be posting message similar to this one to other pages on Commons. The team is looking forward to reading what you think. Commons - Media Sarch, new feedback round[edit]

Greetings,

I'm following up on a message from earlier in the year about the prototype development for Special:MediaSearch. Based on community feedback, the Structured Data team has developed some new features for Special:MediaSearch and are seeking another round of comments and discussions about the tool. Commons:Structured_data/Media_search is updated with details about the new features plus some other development information, and feedback is welcome on Commons talk:Structured_data/Media_search. Media Search works in any language, so the team would especially appreciate input around support for languages other than English. I look forward to reading about what you think. -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 20:05, 23 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Image formats[edit]

Hi, thank you for uploading some images to Commons. Here's a tip: Use the right image format for the kind of image. As a general rule, this is JPEG for photographs, and PNG for most other kinds of images. Using the wrong format can bloat the file size and/or degrade the quality of the image. Most modern graphics applications will give you the choice between these formats among others. See also Commons:File types#Images. Good luck. Smjg (talk) 17:48, 4 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have just uploaded a French version of that file (there are also Spanish and Portuguese versions). In your opinion, would it be appropriate to link these files on Commons, or just rely on the categories? Best regards GastelEtzwane (talk) 13:44, 29 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@GastelEtzwane: I think linking them is better than just relying on categories. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 10:07, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Linseneintopf: I appreciate your checking of the copyright status of files on Commons, but I do not appreciate speedy deletion tags for things that come with clear licensing information that is fully in line with what is stated at the respective sources. I have thus challenged all your speedy tags on these files. If you still want to get the files deleted, we need some reason for that. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:28, 5 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Daniel, I have to apologize, I was not sufficiently careful yesterday. I didn't realize one could click the doi/YouTube links and find licencing information there. So to me it looked like somebody had uploaded the files and just put some random licence. This kind of almost-getting-it-right would not be untypical of paid editors from research institutions — which of course you aren't, but I was getting here from the POV-y article de:Nationale Forschungsdateninfrastruktur, so I didn't check properly. I've replied in the deletion discussions, I think in one or two cases problems remain. Again, sorry for the inconvenience! --Linseneintopf (talk) 19:02, 6 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Round 1 of Picture of the Year 2022 voting is open![edit]

2022 Picture of the Year: Saint John Church of Sohrol in Iran.

Read this message in your language

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Journal imports[edit]

Hi Daniel. I just noticed your bot User:Open Access Media Importer Bot uploads media from PMC. I recently started the same but uploading the article PDFs from Royal Society Open Science via PMC FTP User:DaxBot. I'm wondering if there is an overlap between our bots as I noticed you are working on expanding to full text import. My bot is limited to Category:Journals from Royal Society Open Science for now. -- DaxServer (talk) 14:58, 3 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@DaxServer: Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, happy to exchange and coordinate. To get started, I would appreciate a pointer to your code and some words about how you use the bot's watchlist. -- Daniel Mietchen (talk) 00:44, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Here's my code: https://gitlab.com/daxserver/daxbot (-1 commit pending to push)
I'm working thru PMCIDs present at https://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pub/pmc/ (limited to RSOS for now, I think they're in the oa_comm_use_file_list.csv) and using Mediawiki Citation APIs and CrossRef API to generate an {{Information}} template. PDFs are from PMC FTP After uploading, I'm adding it to my (DaxServer) account's watchlist, thus I don't have to login to DaxBot to monitor watchlist for changes.
Have you already uploaded RSOS images? The PMC packaged images seem to be of lower resolution, ex: compare rsos140081-g1.jpg from ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pub/pmc/oa_package/3f/1e/PMC4448764.tar.gz vs https://royalsocietypublishing.org/cms/asset/d077986a-a0f3-43dc-8918-2400c0012419/rsos140081f01.jpg - however, RSOS doesn't seem to have exposed an API to retrieve directly from them. I'm thinking of writing to them for some access. Do you have any thoughts on this? -- DaxServer (talk) 07:56, 4 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
File:DNAqua-Net - Developing new genetic tools for bioassessment and monitoring of aquatic ecosystems in Europe - RIO article 11321.pdf has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category discussion warning

Organ specificity has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed.

Thank you!
