Hello BoringHistoryGuy!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichillT (talk) 05:41, 6 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A deletion request was filed. This has been replaced by a better image. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 18:38, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:RonaeleManorGardenFront.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Woodland Terrace[edit]

I'm new to Wikimedia Commons so please excuse any irregularities in my post.

I was really interested to find the following and it seems you cataloged it? http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WoodlandTerrace.jpg

Do you have any information on this house's history or owners? It was the home of my great-great aunt back after the turn of the century and as far as I can tell, her sister inherited it. I actually was in the house when I was a kid in 1967 and was really surprised that it was not only still standing, that it is on the National Register of Historic Places. When I saw it, it was really in bad shape and in need of major repair and renovation.

I'm not really sure of the actual street address. Do you know? The 1910 US Census had what appears to be an incorrect address (3915 Woodland Avenue) for my Great Great Aunt (Elizabeth), and in the 1930 census, it had a different street number (4002 Woodland Avenue) for the Great Great aunt (Alberta) that lived there when I was a kid. Google Maps shows it as 4018 Woodland Avenue. It is on the corner of Woodland Terrace and Woodland Avenue.

Thanks for any info you might have or any links you may direct me to for more information. 03:08, 20 October 2011‎ SusanInSFL

Washington statue at New Orleans Public Library[edit]

Hi. I reverted your replacement of a general view of the main branch of New Orleans Public Library, File:NOPLWashingtonSide.jpg, with a very cropped version to just show a statue. Drastic modifications of images should generally not be uploaded over the original photo, but rather uploaded as a separate derivative work with a link to the original. I have taken care of doing this one for you, uploading your cropped version to File:NOPLWashingtonSide Statue Crop.jpg. Thanks for your attention; if you have any questions about Commons you have trouble finding an answer to, feel free to ask. Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 18:02, 3 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Autopatrol given[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 17:21, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Changing categories[edit]

Hi. If you move a category, you should probably leave behind a category redirect, as I just did for Category:John D. Barrow. Best, Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:36, 11 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Categories about presidents in the Oval Office[edit]

Hi. It appears that, when you have been categorizing Oval Office pictures by president, you have caught some pictures that do not have any president in the image: It just happens to be during that president's term, or the president has been cropped out. I believe those categories were only for media that show a specific person in a specific room. For example, if a recent file shows the Oval Office without showing Barack Obama, it would normally go in Category:Oval Office and Category:White House in 2013 but not Category:Barack Obama in the Oval Office. Conversely, a recent photo that shows Barack Obama would normally be in Category:Barack Obama in 2013, Category:Barack Obama in the Oval Office, and en:White House in 2013, but not Category:Barack Obama or Category:Oval Office directly. --Closeapple (talk) 20:36, 20 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you please repair the categories--Oursana (talk) 14:23, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Diplomatic Reception Rooms[edit]

Hello. You've been doing great work on Category:Diplomatic Reception Rooms and appear to be quite knowledgeable on the subject. Thank you for correcting my description of File:BookcaseDeskDiplomaticReceptionRoomsUS.jpg.

I may have more usable photos from my tour there, but I have delayed uploading them because I'm not sure how to label them. Could I send you some images for help in identification? Jonathunder (talk) 01:05, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. It's not that I'm knowledgeable, I just have a copy of Conger's book. Thanks. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 02:34, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I should look for a copy of that book. Have you toured the Diplomatic Reception Rooms? I did when I was in D.C. for Wikimania 2012. It was quite interesting. Jonathunder (talk) 02:49, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't been to the rooms, but it's on my list of things to do when in D.C. Early on, the rooms had a reputation as a dumping ground by dealers for "problem" (altered) pieces, but there are some important pieces (like the Frothingham bombe desk). And the sheer concentration of pieces must be striking. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 14:28, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was fascinated by the historical connections of many items, such as Paul Revere silverwork and the actual desk used in the signing of the Treaty of Paris. If I were to go again, I would try to get more photos of those kinds of things. Jonathunder (talk) 16:35, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could you explain[edit]

Why you added William Rush category to this painting? [1]? Best, explain it in the description there. Thank you, --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 17:37, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Update. I figured it out, but in the future, please add such info to a description :) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 17:39, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Things were fine, the Krimmel painting and the "Nymph and Bittern" photograph were together, until the William Rush page was foolishly overcategorized. Nice to see someone else interested in Rush. Best wishes. -- BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 12:05, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See[edit]

Commons:Village_pump#Pipe_following_Category

Just use 4 digits consistently following the | and perhaps an N or S following that.

Tuesday I got lots of Race Street photos - mostly uploaded already, plus lots of Vine St and 3rd street - mostly not uploaded yet. Thursday of course I got lots of Presby churches, mostly not uploaded yet. See [3]

Don't worry about Tuesday at all. Maybe some other Tuesday.

George Washington seated in the Palace of Versailles[edit]

I believe the painting shows George Washington seated in the Palace of Versailles. Please see: [4]

Wmpearl (talk) 22:24, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wmpearl. That's a big problem, because GW never visited Europe. He did make it to the Caribbean, where his brother died. And almost to the Canadian border in 1781.
As I said, I suspect the "Peale" caption belongs with another painting. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 22:52, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Should Category:Laurelton Hall really be in Category:Furniture by Louis Comfort Tiffany? It's in Category:Louis Comfort Tiffany, which makes sense (it was his home), but normally I think we wouldn't put a building in a furniture category. - Jmabel ! talk 00:23, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Jmabel. I take your point. But Tiffany used Laurelton Hall as a showroom as well as a residence. And Tiffany often designed all aspects of a room--furniture, light fixtures, architectural elements, windows, etc. For example, the spherical baptismal font at Laurelton Hall: Tiffany designed the font, the columns that flank it, and the stained glass window behind it (which feature those same columns). It seemed more useful to a reader to add the whole category than to break it up into subcategories.
Thanks for asking, instead of just reventing. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 12:10, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe we should make a subcat for interior of Laurelton Hall and put that in the furniture category? Because if you look at Category:Laurelton Hall, roughly half of the photos are exterior, and of course don't show furniture in any sense. - Jmabel ! talk 15:12, 6 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

hand drawn[edit]

pulled along the street by hand. Mind if I change it back - again? Eddaido (talk) 12:35, 3 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Eddaido Maybe use both? Some hand-pumped engines could be hand- or horse-drawn. I'm trying to distinguish between primitive early pumpers and more sophisticated 19th-century ones. BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 12:40, 3 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
OK, well, would you please put mine back and add yours. I made a separate distinction. Eddaido (talk) 12:41, 3 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Butler Plantation, Butler Island[edit]

Hello,

I'm wondering if you would review the placement of your categories in Category:Butler Plantation, Butler Island. I think it ends up being a recursive category. Under Category:Butler Plantation, Butler Island, Category:Butler Plantation, Butler Island appears again, under itself. So it is in its own category. Do you see what I mean? I think it's caused by Category:Pierce Butler (1810-1867) being in the Category:Butler Plantation, Butler Island. Best wishes, Kalbbes (talk) 01:30, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also, Category:Pierce Butler (1810-1867) is under itself so the parent is in the child category. Kalbbes (talk) 01:33, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe I'm wrong. I can't quite figure it out. Maybe what you did is OK. Kalbbes (talk) 01:37, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Under one of them I saw the plantation house, but now I don't see it. Kalbbes (talk) 01:40, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Kalbbes: Thank you for catching these. I'll correct them. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 10:47, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bust[edit]

Bust in museum

So you're not sure if this bust inside the museum is by the same artist (Tompkins)? Bubba73 (talk) 21:00, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Bubba73: It seems cruder and more sharply angled than the one outside. What do you think? SIRIS doesn't mentioned the plaster, which leaves me without a source.
Thanks for your offer to photograph sites within a day's trip. I appreciate those you took of the Walter Furness Cottage and Butler Island Plantation. But nothing on the horizon for now. Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 00:19, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We are planning a trip to SW Georgia Thursday. Then there are two counties just a little north of there, and we will be going close to it. My wife wants to go again. I can get a close-up of the one outside for comparison. That may be in 2-3 weeks. Bubba73 (talk) 00:39, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Bubba73: That would be great. The museum might be able to confirm Thompkins as sculptor of the plaster.
I got burnt several years ago by assuming that a small plaster at the New York Historical Society was the sculptor's maquette for his twice-life-size marble. It turned out to be a copy by another artist.
I found a nice image of the Davis Monument at the time of its 1936 dedication, and uploaded it. Alone among the pines.
== BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 16:32, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We are going to SW Georgia tomorrow and our next planned trip is to Wilcox and Crisp counties, and we have to go pretty close to it. Probably in the next 2-3 weeks. Bubba73 (talk) 00:05, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cemetery stuff?[edit]

Are you interested in cemetery stuff like this? Bubba73 (talk) 23:42, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Bubba73: Generally, only when it's designed by a notable sculptor or architect.
I did photograph the 40 or so graves in the Free Quaker Cemetery near Valley Forge. Free Quakers were read out of meeting (excommunicated) for supporting the Continental Army in the Revolutionary War.
Samuel Wetherill -- w:Fatland (Audubon, Pennsylvania) -- led the Free Quakers in Phila, and his descendants moved the graves from Center City to a hill overlooking Valley Forge.
Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 03:23, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is also category:Telfair Academy statues. I don't know if they were by a notable sculpor, but they might be. Bubba73 (talk) 05:49, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Bubba73: I hope you and your wife had a pleasant Thanksgiving. I've heard of Telfair, but don't know anything about it.
You can find info on the Telfair statues here. They appear to be copies of the artist statues outside the w:Vienna Künstlerhaus in Vienna (there are more on the wings of the museum).
User:Carptrash introduced me to SIRIS (and has contributed information to its sculpture listings). It's an invaluable source.
Best, == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 14:14, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
BHG, I didn't know you were doing cemetery sculpture? Or did I forget? We should get our own wiki going on the topic. The Telfair statues seems to have been done by Viktor Oskar Tilgner and Anton Paul Wagner and perhaps more. Carptrash (talk) 23:57, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Carptrash: The cemetery photos are by User:Bubba73, who took the great photos of w:Walter Rogers Furness Cottage on Jekyll Island. Last winter (pre-covid), I ran into the wife of a descendant of Walter Rogers Furness in Center City. She was one of the co-authors of Frank Furness: The Complete Works, and we had a delightful conversation while waiting for our respective trains home.
Lately, I've been reading about Underground Railroad sites in Pennsylvania, and loving the Quaker abolitionists outwitting the federal agents assisting slavecatchers.
Frederick Douglass was almost lynched 5 miles from where I grew up! Mind-blowing.

Doesn't make sense to have a building as a subcat of Category:Architectural elevations of buildings in the United States or Category:1965 drawings. And some of the other parent cats don't make a lot of sense either. Could you please take a look? I suspect some of these parent cats belong on one or more individual photos in the category. - Jmabel ! talk 21:49, 19 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
