Grey square optical illusion - usage[edit]

Dear Adrian Pingstone,

I found the image you developed regarding the proof of the grey square optical illusion, available here:

Thanks for writing. I'm puzzled why my name is on this file because I didn't draw it or put it on Commons, so my name being connected with it is a mystery.
The grey "bridge" was drawn by a User called Domdomegg but he certainly didn't create the original (the one that has no bridge). You can contact him (I'll assume he is a male) for permission, but the copyright status of the original illusion may be unknown to him so he might not be able to give you permission. Contact Domdomegg by clicking on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Domdomegg Then I hope you will see "Email the User" in the left hand column. Hope this works (it worked for me).

David, thanks for writing. I'm Adrian Pingstone from Yate, near Bristol (I don't know who Nick is!). What pic do you refer to? I'd like to see it even though I can't help you with a better version. To locate it I need the article name on Wikipedia or its file name (or it might not be on a Wikipedia page but on the image bank called Wikimedia). I have several thousand pics on Wikipedia and so locating one needs more than you told me. However, the pics I put on WP (or WM) are exactly the same in resolution and pixel size as came off my camera so no higher res version exists. Sorry to disappoint you. Nick, firstly several general points: don't put new entries at the top because if you look at the dates below each entry you'll see that new stuff goes at the bottom (so I've moved it to here), also users don't answer by email because other people like to see the answers, and finally NEVER give your email address clearly, disguise it (as I've done for you) because spammers will find it and your email spam could go up a lot. Now to the answer:-
Most of my pics are from an Olympus C750UZ digital compact (takes great pics but is no longer on the market), a few are from a Canon S3 IS digital compact (I'm very unhappy with this camera because of purple fringing) and now my very recent aircraft pics are from a most excellent Nikon D50 digital SLR using a Nikon 18 to 200mm telephoto lens. There's an easy way to tell what camera I used, just click on the pic in the article and it usually says at the bottom (but not always because a degraining program I used to use destroys the EXIF data which contains the make of camera, exposure, shutter speed etc). - Arpingstone 19:21, 28 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh, I referred to the image description, which somewhat appears to misrepresent image contents. Granted, the computer can be seen at the bottom right, but someone who doesn't know anything about computers and who hasn't seen computers before might as well understand the computer to be either of the devices on the table or all of the devices on the table.

Columbia 400

Colombia picture[edit]

Hi! The Rubicon here, how did that particular Columbia 400 make it across the pond? I live in Oregon, I just fly 172s but oh to fly my states most pretty creation. I know it has a huge range, but did it fly across the pond to England? Or was it shipped?

but at the time I had only an Olympus compact so I had too many rejections and gave up loading to a.net. Now that I have a Nikon D50 DSLR I still find the a.net standards too high (relative to the amount of time I'm willing to spend on post-processing) so I will have just those 7 for ever. You are right, the runway should have been 27L. I can't imagine how I made the mistake considering that I've been to Heathrow 23 times in the last 5 years (I live 100 miles away). The road is most definitely Myrtle Avenue (not Myrtle Street). I know it very well indeed, so you are viewing Google Earth wrongly somehow. 777 crash at LHR[edit]

Some crazy event in your very own back yard today. Did you go to take a peek? I wonder what the final determined cause will be. Yes, it was weird to look at a crash on the TV showing an area of Heathrow I know very well. However, because of the dull weather here, and the probable traffic congestion and closed roads, I decided not to go there. But I have added a pic of a similar B777 (G-YMMD, a -200ER) to the crash article at en:British Airways Flight 38. I'm hoping the cause will be a simultaneous bird strike on both engines but I haven't seen any reports of birds being seen around, so that cause seems unlikely. more image area now...

A few things, I saw an aircraft like this over my head a few months ago and had a discussion about how they aren't being used like they were when I was much younger. The photograph is great, and I made it a little bigger (like there is less of a crop). I wanted to let you know in case you would rather revert it.

And in a completely different direction, I was laughing while doing some research for a weed that grows in England. The documentation that was available to me made it sound like the son of the first head botanist at the Oxford Botanical Garden got kind of angry when his dad died and threw a lot of the seeds the dad had been keeping out into the land. In that same document, there was a quote from a later botanist who said that he watched the seeds from the plant I was writing about board the train in Oxford and get off in Tilehurst. It was kind of funny stuff to read in the middle of all of the biology, formal descriptions and stuff. I thought about taking that trip by train myself and linked to the google map in the article: en:Senecio squalidus.

I even put photographs of the train stations into the category with the little invader: Category:Senecio squalidus.

So... I was also wondering if there were any photographers from England who are active and might take a few photographs of this 'garden thug'. It should be blooming from April through November there (maybe even in March).

Thanks for your most excellent pic change, I agree that I had clipped it too hard and that yours looks much better.
(this next para is my mistake, please ignore it. I thought you had set a px in the actual article). Incidentally I have removed the 242px in the code, it's now WP policy to not include px values (except in rare cases) so that the reader can set their own value in Prefs, depending on the width of their monitor. For example, my screen is 1680px wide so I need the max pic size available in Prefs which is 300px. Someone with, say, a 1000 pixel wide screen will find that too big. The default if Prefs is not set is 180px.
The only reason that I set the pixels for that thumbnail was because I wanted to trigger a redraw of the thumbnail -- it was purely a mechanically inspired decision. -- carol 01:15, 16 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I fully admit to never reading any of the licenses I have been using for the last decade -- what I read on the GFDL-retouched template was that it was for images that had been in the public domain. Another thing that I have noticed here at commons is that several images are licensed with several licenses.

First, apologies for the long delay in replying. I understand nothing about licencing simply because I have no need to:-) I'm happy to let the world use my pics in any way whatever so I put the template {{PD-user|Arpingstone}} on the Image Description page and the phrase Photographed by Adrian Pingstone in (insert date here) and placed in the public domain.
That's it. No complications, no worries! Of course, I can only do that because I only use pics taken with my own cameras. I opted instead for an scan of an old botany page painting of Senecio vulgaris. My goal there was to put images of Senecio that have articles. Scroll down to "London, UK" and you will see the aircraft used. Editing my images[edit]

Hi, Arpingstone,
May I please ask you, if you edit my images please upload your edits to new versions and do not overwrite my originals. The thing is that I use my images at my web site and I do not feel it is the right thing to do to use the images, which were edited by somebody else. Sorry but although I was an Aerodynamicist (before I retired) my work was on Airbus wing design so I have no knowledge of contrail shapes. On the subject of my modifying your original pictures then you are wrong. I do not ever overwrite the original as you know because you were able to revert my correction of the slope on the contrail pic in the Wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrail. Had I overwritten the original you could not have done that reversion! Incidentally I find it puzzling you prefer the reader of the Contrail article to see a sloping picture as against an upright picture. You did change my original image. If one uploads the image with the same name, one gets a warning: A file with this name exists already, please check Image:Contrail and tsunami warning sign.jpg if you are not sure if you want to change it. I reverted your change after I saw it, but for quite some time your edit was displayed at my web site. As I said before I do not care, if my images are edited and I do not care, if these edits are put to the articles instead of my originals, but I would like to keep my originals in my user galleries, if you do not mind. I am puzzled by your statement that "you did change my original image. Obviously that filename exists because it's WP policy that image re-edits (say for tilt or lack of contrast) should be uploaded under the SAME filename. I haven't time tonight to look for the policy statement but I've read it many times. No harm is done because the previous version remains in the list on the Image Description page. The previous uploader can then, if the edit is disliked, revert (as you have done, in order to restore the tilt). What I am not going to do is go against WP policy and change the filename, there's no point (from my point of view) because the previous version is preserved.
I think you are saying that my version of the pic then appears on this other website because you are taking pics for the other site off Commons. If my changes are appearing on the other website there's nothing I can do. I suppose you'd have to rename your original and use that new name in the website. I'm not going to violate WP policy just for you because I've edited (mostly for tilts) hundreds of pics (I repeat, in strict accordance with WP policy) and have never received a complaint.
Remember that to me it's just a Commons picture, I could not know that you have another site, I have followed WP policy on re-uploaded pictures, and this problem has never arisen in the 5 years I've been working with pictures. Commons does not host your original and my edit, under different names. That might be helpful for you, but it's not policy.

Deep apologies, I had not seen that quote. Nevertheless it still leaves a problem where the other person is using a Commons picture somewhere else but wants their version to appear in that other place. What I can't do is change the filename everytime I edit a picture because it's a longer procedure, and one problem arising in five years is not reason enough to do so. Nevertheless I feel a complete fool for not being aware of that quote and will try to be more aware of the proper policy details in the future. I have just seen your galleries and they are stunning! Regarding the "ludicrous ruling"[edit]

Utterly ludicrous ruling (I took the picture). But sadly there is nothing I can do about it.

I certainly do not doubt, and nor did anyone else, that you took this photo. Unfortunately, there are laws in place in many countries which say that taking a photograph of original architecture creates a derivative work of that copyrighted architecture, and so any photo of it would be a copyright violation. France is among many countries with such (in my view, very absurd) rules, and we're bound to respect the laws of the country in which the photo is taken.

tl;dr it wasn't an absurd ruling on the administrator's part to delete this; we don't get to decide the law, alas. :/

I wonder if it's OK to take pictures in Rhyl, Llandudno, Cowlyn Bay and Chester in June. I hope the architects are not alive!!!!

You're fine here. On this count, Britain has some of the most liberal laws in the world.

River Avon[edit]

Hi. First off, you have taken some brilliant photographs of Bristol. However, in the blurb for some of them you seem to imply that the floating harbour was a manmade course of the River Avon. Actually, the floating harbour follows the natural path of the river, it is the more direct one along by the Asda in Bedminster that was man-made. The components of the RAF Role Demo did a fly through before they began their display. The E-3 is a sedate aircraft so it was fairly easy to capture a sharp pic. A few moments later the Tornados were flying around flat out and sharp pics got much harder! I'm working (slowly) on adding the Kemble pics, a static Sea Hawk next. Yes, I would be delighted if you used the photo. I make all my pictures Public Domain so that others can use them freely. I took it at Kemble Airport (used to be called Kemble Airfield but has mysteriously acquired the title Airport although it has no scheduled and no charter services!). I took it at the 2008 Open Day, when they got both aircraft in the air. The two did 2 full circuits of the field so this was not merely one flying past the other! My hobby is aviation photography, I have a low-range Nikon D50 DSLR.
I would love to have a copy of your book so I will email you my address via your personal website. Incidentally I have a connection with the University of Bath, where I note that you lecture. I got a B.Sc in Electrical Engineering from Bath while the Claverton Down campus was still a building site. Morris 1100 photo[edit]

Hi from New Zealand. I'm intrigued by your photo at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_1100 called 1966.morris.1100.arp.jpg (the second one down with the lady in it). Was that an Australian Morris 1100? As far as I know only 1100s manufactured in Oz used the over-riders on the bumpers, although it is always possible that the one in your photo had bumpers fitted from a Riley or a Wolsley. Greetings from England. The grey 1100 in the picture was bought by my wife-to-be 5 years before I met her. We met in 1976 and married in 1977. Because I had a car as well (Hillman Avenger) we sold that 1100. She only remembers that she bought it from a dealer here in Bristol so I doubt it could have been Australian. bristol roundabout[edit]

Hi Adrian

I am preparing a technical guidance note on the design of roundabouts with traffic signals and would like to use your excellent image of the Bristol roundabout on the cover. It will have to be cropped to fit. Some of the road markings at that site do not comply with official guidance and I would need to make some minor digital editing to avoid it appearing that non standard practice is being encouraged. I know that you have put the image in the public domain but I would just like your confirmation that this includes making minor changes to the image.

It looks as if we were at the same event and I'd guess you clicked the shutter just a few secs after I did, with the Destroyer almost engaged. Of course, it's possible the quartet visited several Battle of Britain Shows that afternoon (I was at Waterbeach and it was 14 Sept 1963). Any recollections of the place? Auster XR246[edit]

Evening Adrian, Nice pic as ever. It set me off over the net and also to Wrecks and Relics (G-AZBU not in 2006 ed, I think) and I still don't know if the paint job is genuine, i.e. if G-AZBU was serial XR246 before. One question I can answer. RAE always divided their aircraft into flights, so at Farnborough (which is well recorded in Peter Cooper's book) in the '60s there were: Armament Flight; Structures and Mechanical Engineering Flight; Transport Flight; Instruments and Photographic Flight; and Radio Flight. Cooper has a A.O.P.9 in the Radio Flight (at Farnborough) re "Green Salad" (eh?), but it was XN412. It's not a complete list and does not include Bedford only aircraft. Nice photo of my Series IV Sunbeam Alpine HMY200B en:File:Sunbeam.alpine.IV.arp.jpg but a small correction - it was taken at Kemble Air Show as I have never attended the Yate Car Show! If you google images "Sunbeam Alpine" this photo is currently coming up first - I feel quite honoured.

Vulcan ... to be 1, or to be 1A[edit]

Hi Adrian, ref your nice picture of a Vulcan here at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Vulcan.filton.arp.750pix.jpg However the captioning is out a little. Vulcan B1s had no fuselage tail extension for ECM kit, so this example is clearly a B1A. I hesitate to jump in with both feet and alter the caption meself when it would be better done by you. Hi, I dont know if you are the right person to ask, but I am currently translating the article about the Battle of Britain into Norwegian Bokmål/Riksmål with an eye that it is 70 years since. I have also used one of your pictures in the article to show a Hawker Hurricane and given you credit for it. However when I started to translate the article about RAF Bentley Priory I found that we do not have any free picture. Black Arrows photo[edit]

Hi Adrian,

Just a note to say I believe your photo on the Black Arrows page showing the 16 aircraft is actually a photo of the Blue Diamonds of 92 Squadron, when they displayed at Farnborough in 1961 or 1962.

If you look closely at the wing tips of the aircraft, they have a white tip, which the Black Arrows didn't have but the Blue Diamonds did. Also, the only formation ever flown as a 16 aircraft formation by the Black Arrows was the 16 aircraft roll flown after the 22 aircraft loop in 1958, they never flew such a large formation again. I am in contact with SqnLdr Brian Mercer who lead the Blue Diamonds and he would like the credit for this formation.

BTW I am an A330 captain, for Qantas... Thanks for your work on the wing... It is a beauty.

This is a gorgeous photograph. It's crisp, clear, and well composed. You should nominate it at the English Wikipedia featuted picture candidates - I think it would pass. The only issue that I could possibly see is people asking you if you have a higher-resolution copy, but it is over the minimum resolution for English Featured Pictures (1500 px a side), and I presume it's just the necessary crop, so... Hello, I have taken the time to extensively look over your work on wiki and it is incredibly vast. I have just created my own user name to edit pages and add pictures. I did notice one flaw in something that you have written though. I'm not sure how I would correct it, so I am writing to ask you to explain it to me. On this page you wrote that Emirates is the largest operator of the A380 when in fact Singapore Airlines has the most in operation.

Thanks for writing. I have looked at a picture I have of the four volumes of the 1407 bible in its showcase at Malmesbury Abbey (which is about 30 miles from where I live). I estimate a single page (not the double spread) is 15 inches (380 mm) high and 10 inches (254 mm) across. That makes the height of each letter 0.17 inch (4.5 mm). Concorde noise measurements[edit]

Hi Arpingstone

I just coincidentally dropped on your user page reading that you did Concorde noise measurements! I led a project called Infrasound noise detection during the time of Concorde. At that time (1992 and later) we developed an infrasound direction finder. At the very first day after having fielded the detector, the Infrasound-Micophones and its attached high speed computer we observed daily 3 or 4 ten minutes long peaks of infrasound noise (1 to 5 Hz) coming in from NW. The peaks got if I remember correct 30 dB above noise level. These three or four peaks of noise arrived daily precisely at the same point in time. After several weeks of research we proofed, that we did hear the supersonic bang of Concorde in Switzerland. I probably still do have the reports in my screed. ...

Hi from Bristol, England, thanks for your question. For my aircraft pics on Wikipedia I use a Nikon lens that covers the huge range of 18 mm to 200 mm, so it's wide angle through to telephoto. The 200 mm end is not really long enough for military aircraft so I bought a Tamron 70 mm to 300 mm lens. The problem then was that for aircraft on the ground 70 mm was too long and I hate changing lenses at a show because that lets the dust in. So now I stick to the Nikon lens for everything, ground or air. The lens says "AF-S Nikkor 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 G ED" Other lettering on the lens is DX and VR. Best Wishes Arpingstone (talk)

Thanks Adrian for getting back to me so soon. Do forgive me if I use this page incorrectly as I don't often use wiki sites. I only messaged as I wanted to find out more about it as your image is the only thing on the internet about the wall. From my understanding (which might be incorrect), one (or possibly two) ex-members of a mountaineering club sadly died and that the wall was built a long time ago as a tribute (hence the plaque).
