Image of Flight 901[edit]

An editor recently raised an objection to the use of two of your images in w:Air New Zealand Flight 901 on the basis of the images being Original Research (see that article's talk page). Apart from defending their use, having seen your other contributions, I decided to come here and leave a note of appreciation for the great work you've done. Excellent graphics, in a technical sense, and you should be commended for taking care to 'interpret reality' as authentically as possible - ultimately for the benefit of thousands of readers. Interesting, you refer to an unnamed editor arguing original research as being correct, yet that editor is you. Why not just say, "I am correct..."?
As Glen Dillon pointed out, w:WP:OR#Original images specifically addresses this issue. Images are exempt from OR unless they add something new not in the published sources. It says (emphasis added on the really important parts): Original images created by a Wikipedia editor are not, as a class, considered original research – as long as they do not illustrate or introduce unpublished ideas or arguments, the core reason behind the NOR policy.
The appearance of the plane came from photos of it, Ross Island/Erebus came from published maps with elevation data, and weather conditions (including cloud levels and types) came from the official report, the excerpt of which I included in the description of File:Dc10erebus.png. Hi. In case you havn't seen it, there has been some discussion about your images at Wikipedia:Village pump (policy). The responses are all positive in that they indicate no OR issues with your Air New Zealand DC-10 images. I've always assumed folks would edit the captions at some point, so I don't put too much thought into them. That being said, please go ahead with any changes you'd like to make :)

Since I seem to be alone in my opposition (in the thread on the Policy page on VP on en), I'll stop nagging about these images, but must insist that every caption must begin with "Artist's depiction of..." I would oppose "CG render of...", for example, because some people will come to the conclusion that the image was generated by a data-based simulation of some kind. I appreciate your message, it's rare in disputes and especially so online. It's also important to understand though, like any text in any article; I've always assumed folks would edit the captions at some point, so I don't put too much thought into them. (Personally I favor "illustration" as a description because I try to minimize the use of artistic license and "artist's impression" tends to be code for "poorly researched picture of...") Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Anybody,

it's about the picture linked above. Would you like to edit it due to some critic in the German wikipedia? There are two things: First, many users want the picture to be not that dark since in the thumb view you hardly can see anything. It know it has happend at night, but maybe you can make it look like it was in the tilight? Second, can you make the aircrafts be more descending? Both the aircrafts have been in an "increased descending".

Thanks for your sterling efforts on File:727db.gif over the years - it's one of Wikipedia's most informative animations. I wonder, though - your latest (Blender-based) versions show the aircraft with its wheels down, whereas your previous versions show it wheels up. First, thank you for the praise :) Second, indeed it's not a detail found in every source, but is out there as I discovered while looking around for anything I may have missed as I was doing this version: San Fransisco Chronicle "Cooper told Rataczak that after the money and parachutes had been delivered, he wanted the pilot to head south from Seattle, depressurize the cabin, fly no higher than 10,000 feet, leave the landing gear down, set flaps at 15 degrees and leave the rear door open. With the exception of the door, which had to be closed for takeoff, he got everything he asked for."
I'd actually prepared a gear up version when I happened upon the above article. I debated what to do and checked for other sources, upon finding a couple more I decided to go with gear down. [1] [2] On a side note, the detail also seems consistent with someone who has a better than average knowledge of aviation and skydiving, but not professional experience. (Landing gear won't keep a nearly empty 727 under 200 mph if the pilot pushes the throttle enough.) Anynobody (talk) 02:30, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lighten up Toba Eruption?[edit]

Tobaeruption.png in the Toba catastrophe theory article is just too dark. The others which you've uploaded which are not linked are not as effective. Actually I do make most of the textures you see in my images, whenever I use something downloaded from the web I've first made sure it's NOT copyrighted and I usually note it, like here: File:Dc10erebus.png.
(Unless you count randomly generated textures from Blender and any sample textures included with the software.)

On this image, it is unclear if you used a texture for the Earth from some place on the internet, or if it comes (as you say so) from Blender. As a potential reuser, I wondered if I could safely use the image, and as a contributor, I sent you a notification (along with a message, it doesn't seem “human” otherwise…). The Earth, in this image, is actually made up of three textures. The land masses originally came from a sample texture included with AutoCAD 2002 which I used Inkscape to trace into a vector enhanced meta file (.EMF) so I could increase the size and detail it in Paint Shop Pro. Fuselage[edit]

Hi,

In your image File:737-700f.gif, illustrating a fuselage, would it be possible to remove the coloring from the engines, and perhaps remove the red and orange stripes from the aft part? As far as I can tell, the file is only used (on en, anyway) to illustrate the "Fuselage" article, and the extra coloring is a little confusing.

The livery is actually from a Southwest Airlines 737, circa 2000. I don't want to confuse anyone, so I re-did the highlight color. Double checking, it's not a Gulfstream. It's actually a Bombardier Global Express. I'd been looking at it for a while myself and had originally based the Gulfstream ID on the very low mounted wings with unexposed main landing gear but failed to notice the flap actuators which the Gulfstream V doesn't have and the lack of winglets which all Gulfstream Vs seem to have. Software?[edit]

Wow, thank you very much :) I actually use several programs to make my images, 99% of the models were made with AutoCAD versions 14 or 2002. Texture maps are made with either Paint Shop Pro, GIMP, Inkscape, or sometimes all. The models and textures are then imported into Blender to render the basic image which can be modified with the same programs I use to make/manipulate textures. Sequence of images into animation[edit]

I have been looking with some interest at the images you've been creating for BloodRedSandman on en.wikinews. I would very much like to take these images and create an animation from them. For that, I would need to know the time elapsed between each image (or "frame").

Once there are four or more frames I can make a start on doing this. It may take some trial-and-error to get it right but, the presentation should be far more dramatic in that way. --Brian McNeil / talk 04:01, 17 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, I'm planning on five images and have already done two so I can let you know those right now. The other three I can give a ballpark guesstimate.
  1. Frame 1 Time 4.5 seconds before explosion
  2. Frame 103 Time .53 seconds after
  3. Frame 150-156 Time ~3.0 seconds after
  4. Frame 400-420 Time 22-23 seconds after
  5. Frame 880-900 Time 44-45 seconds after

MOdels[edit]

Hello, I was wondering if there was a link to download the model of the Sub-chaser and Gato submarine, I mod games and wanted to put it in SHIV.

I'd be happy to help you out but for a couple of problems.
  • First and most important, the models now have way too many details for games to perform well (you're looking at the models as they were two or three years ago, I've added a lot of stuff). A game model should, ideally, have as few meshes as possible, to get better frame rates: I created meshes for each part of the ships including their weapons/rigging/etc.
  • Second, I'm pretty sure the commons doesn't accept model file formats.

Hello, I have used one of your pictures in my article here. I just wanted to check that the way I attributed the work you is OK with you as well as the licence. Every picture is clickable and in the larger detail, there are all the info visible, but inside the article, they are not. Is it necessary to provide link to be always visible (as it is now bellow the image)? No problem, just want to clarify it for the future. Keep up the great work and thanks. Toba eruption[edit]

Sure, I used this info to get an idea of how much was erupted, what fell where, and how thick it was:
  • USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory
    • The scale of the Toba eruption is difficult to comprehend. Pyroclastic flows (hot flows of ash and pumice) covered an area of at least 20,000 square kilometers (7,700 sq mi), with deposits as thick as 600 m (2,000 ft) near the vents. Ash fall was widespread over much of southeast Asia. An ash layer approximately 15 cm (6 in) thick was deposited over the entire Indian subcontinent. Our appreciation of the magnitude of this eruption continues to grow as Toba ash is recognized farther and farther from the source.
  • Smithsonian's Global Volcanism Program
    • The YTT represents the world's largest known Quaternary eruption, ejecting about 2500-3000 cu km (dense rock equivalent) of ignimbrite and airfall ash from vents at the NW and SE ends of present-day Lake Toba.

By the way, I was intrigued by the eruption watching a TV documentary, and that's how I decided to work on the Toba catastrophe theory article in Wikipedia! But I am no geologist! First, thanks for all the great pictures. I came across the Hughes Airwest Flight 706 article and it had one of your pictures. United Airline Flight 811 engine gauges[edit]

That is a very informative png of the engine gauges in the UAL 811 article. I am wondering if it would take a lot of your time to change the gauges from the linear tape type, to the round analogue type? I ask that because the round ones are the types that were installed on UAL planes. I don't know if it would be helpful, but you can see what those kind actually looked like, here. It's funny you should ask, I've been making flight decks for my 747 models as a side project, between a couple of super detailed images I've been working on. That model actually kind of sucked, otherwise I'd of done the image more like an offset side view to better illustrate the bomb hits. So when I got my new computer I decided to start over from scratch and didn't copy it. (I still have the model, on a hard drive in my disconnected computer.) North Hollywood shootout Map[edit]

I noticed you created a map of the area in which the North Hollywood shootout occurred. I live in the area, although I moved in after the incident. Although it's a minor point the map is somewhat incorrect. Morella actually goes through, it doesn't stop at Radford; Radford continues to the south as well. There's a house on the part of the street which the map shows not existing which does wonderful Christmas decorations. There's also a street, Hinds Ave., which is not on the map and which could, theoretically, have been important.

Although I'm not positive it looks like I would need to create an account and wait four days before I could update the map. I don't want to do that. Here's an edited file, and I'd appreciate it if you would update the original. The captioning in the article will need to be changed too, to include Hinds. I had to move the buildings a little to fit it in. I didn't think you were actually placing them based on real building positions and silhouettes. If you were I guess this is useless.

Unfortunately no, I don't. I have a Thomas Guide from two years later, 1999, and it has the same street layout as today, except that it shows the two parts of Lemay St. in the area connecting. Having seen the buildings there (and noticed that according to Zillow the houses in the way were build int 1947 and 1953) I imagine that that's actually one of those deliberate errors which mapmakers sometimes use to check for copyright violations, but I can't be sure. Really though, there's not a lot of new construction in the immediate area, just a school which is slightly off the area the map covers. The streets were almost certainly the same. I think you've misunderstood the Commons:Avoid overwriting existing files proposal, it's actually about different versions and modifications of the same photograph. This isn't a photo it's an illustration, which is like a really fancy diagram. Diagrams can have errors not seen in a photograph, for example a misspelled word or bad layout. Comment on File:Valu592-2.png[edit]

First off, I love your images in articles - they really illustrate the articles well. So I do need to point out a discrepancy or ambiguity in File:Valu592-2.png, which describes itself as the last moments of ValuJet 592. It's not clear from the image, but it looks like the aircraft is about to impact at a fairly shallow angle, though again, it is difficult to tell as the horizon is not visible. For clarity, perhaps tweaking it to make it clear that the impact attitude was much more vertical will aid the reader understanding just how violent the impact really was ( reconstructed to be "Right wing down, nose down" (Ref: Sec. 1.1) and described by eyewitnesses as "nearly vertical" (op. cit., sec 1.1.1) ). I am so sorry for the late reply, the holidays have been busy as hell. Thanks for the compliments, I really appreciate the encouragement :) Making images based on real events is hard if you actually care about accuracy, so it's nice to hear from people who also look at the details.
I was kinda worried about that myself, whether the image really gives the impression of imminence regarding Critter 592's fate. Two things said yes, the large shadow and only extra swamp was cropped from the original image. The latter you had no way of knowing of course, but trust me, the plane is almost totally nose down and banked right. I tried to do it from a ground perspective but the problem was a stationary camera makes for a blurry airplane. I didn't do it without vector blurring because the image comes out looking like a Critter 592 is hovering. I could just upload the uncropped image, it helps make clear that the horizon is just as visible as it is anytime you're looking almost straight down. However that would have the unintended effect of making the airplane smaller and less easily seen in a thumbnail. Anynobody (talk) 05:27, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

As I've been bringing the Hughes Airwest Flight 706 up to GA status on the English wikipedia, I've been fielding a lot of comments in various places about how great the two pictures (File:Hughesairwest705.png and File:Hughes air west N9345.gif) are. People have mentioned especially how the animated gif is an excellent aid for helping the reader to understand the circumstances of the collision. Thank you, and sure, I think I can do that. Can't guarantee it'll be right away though because I've gotta make a new model and textures for the Caravelle. (If it was a DC-9, 727, One-eleven, or Tu-154 I've already got models and template textures.) More importantly I've got some writing stuff I gotta do, for money, so naturally it takes priority. Your CGI images of aircraft accidents[edit]

Dear Anynobody, please note that I have just deleted several CGI images which you had created from articles an the English Wikipedia about air disaster. I did this because per [[4]] discussion, they are considered to violate current policies, especially WP:OR. I think these rendering are original research (which is not acceptable for inclusion), as well as an over-dramatization of the events. Hello,

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Anynobody. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Anynobody~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. Hi, would it be possible to regenerate this image with the two "fluids" **next to** each other. It looks confusing now: when I first watched the anim I couldn't understand what's going on, because it looks like the water from top is going through some sort of filter (middle-line of image) and ends up that pink gooey stuff. The more I watch it, the more it looks like that, even though I know that's not the case.

I think you were wrong about your teacher's photos from Vietnam[edit]

Ten years ago, in Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard/Attention/Archive_4#User...harassment?, you wrote "For example a teacher of mine, who happened to fly F-100s during the Vietnam war carried his own 35mm camera and caught some interesting images of his right wing missing the middle leading edge slat in flight as well in addition to photos on the ground of his and other planes."

I know this was ten years ago, but I am just re-reading it now. I think you made a mistake.

If your teacher is aboard a warplane, in flight, I think the DoD would consider him on duty.

If a GI is on patrol, and the sergeant says, "Take five everybody. Smoke them if you got them." And that GI pulls out his personal camera, and snaps some photos, those photos aren't his personal property. The DoD would consider him on duty, even when Sarge says "take five". And what they heck is a GI doing with a personal camera in a warzone. The DoD would consider it a security risk. They would consider your teacher's personal camera a security risk. The GI doesn't even have to be captured for it to be a security risk. What if he drops it or otherwise loses it? What if he sends photos to friends and family, Stateside, without realizing they reveal some kind of secret?

British Airtours 28m seatmap you made way back in 2008[edit]

I know this is a longshot... You made File:Britair28m.png by request for the WP article on British Airtours Flight 28M. It's undergone a lot of edits, and a question has come up about this diagram. Can you recall where the exit numbers came from? I mean the circled numbers by each exit. (You added them in your second-to-last edit.) They don't seem to exist in the AAIB report or the original diagrams in its Appendices 3a, 3b, or 14. The doors in the galley area are designated L1 and R1, the aft doors are L2 and R2, and there doesn't seem to be a designation for the overwing exits or the pilots' windscreen exits.
