If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file.

Orkney Saga[edit]

This is a belated note of thanks for creating Image:Wfm orkney map.png, which I found at Talk:History of Orkney and was the perfect image for en:List of Orkney islands. en:User:Ben MacDui.

I'm glad it's helpful - it really isn't supposed to be finished. I was hoping to get it to the same standard as Image:Wfm shetland map.png, but working on such a detailed image in Inkscape turned out to be excruciating. I believe newer versions of Inkscape don't suffer the same slowdown, so I'll put finishing it back onto my to-do list. -- Finlay McWalter 17:56, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for helping me find a solution on SVG label problems[edit]

You gave me a response on Commons:Graphics_village_pump/July_2007#Another SVG problem: What am I doing wrong? in which you mentioned that there was a problem with text being rendered as flow instead of text. In that article I passed on how to solve the problem (rather than repeating it in volume here, I'll summarize that the key to fixing the problem is the Convert To Text submenu of the Text menu in Inkscape) which I only figured out because of your suggestion; I had no idea that there is more than one kind of editable text in SVG. Thank you for your help and now I can do more maps as resizable SVG instead of as flat images. Rfc1394 16:03, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. 78.49.12.124 10:01, 10 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander Calder died in 1976. His Artwork is still protected by common copyright laws. No freedom of panorama usable. Raymond Disc. 08:05, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's no more copyright than every image in Category:Vodafone_mobile_phones, Category:IPod classic, Category:London Heathrow Airport, and thousands of other pictures that contain images of recently designed objects. The inconsistent application of the largely fiction-based interpretation of copyright law that Commons arbitrarily applies shows that, far from being the benefit to the Wikimedia community that Commons kids itself it is, it is as much a badly-run hazard. -- Finlay McWalter 12:12, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wfm pelagic.png in Danish[edit]

Could I ask you to translate the Wfm pelagic.png image into Danish, please? You'll find the necessary terms in Danish on this page: http://da.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pelagiske_zone.

The SVG is at Image:Pelagiczone.svg; you can find details of how to edit it at User_talk:Historicair#Image:Wfm_pelagic.png. -- Finlay McWalter (talk) 11:16, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stirling Station Front[edit]

I would like to use the picture of Stirling Station Front in a book to compare with station architecture south of the border. Could you grant a licence for this please. Vigorouskingslynn

I guess you mean File:Wfm stirling station front.jpg. That image is licenced under the GFDL and under a range of cc-by-sa licences, which make it suitable for a wide range of free software, free content, charitable, academic, and other applications; whether that's sufficient for the application you desire is a matter you'll have to discuss with your copyright advisors and/or lawyers. Now in the past some people have asked me for a licence that allows them to use my images in commercial projects, and they feel that they need more liberal terms than those licences permit them. In those cases I've put them in touch with the people who take care of the commercial licencing for my works. In every case it turns out that the person really wanted to use my image for their own profit, but was expecting to get untrammelled use of it for free. That's obviously not something I'd accept. -- Finlay McWalter (talk) 21:39, 18 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Finlay McWalter!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
