Thanks for uploading Image:StevenGoldberg.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Lepidoptera Category[edit]

Hi Alastair,

I've noticed you are trying some changes to the Lepidoptera Category. I'm not sure, but the changes you are implementig don't look a good idea to me. I've also been trying to keep the category clean, but in the system you propose, there will be the problem of having two parallel trees of classification, and the tree with the identified animals will be hidden behind names that very few people know. Rhopalocera is not a common name at all. The main family names, on the other side, are known by the average editor, and should pose less problems. I didn't understand also what is your intention with the categories "butterflies" and "moths", separated from the taxonomic tree, given that they have a great chance of being overpopulated. One alternative to reduce the number of subcategories without adding more names is creating a category "lepidoptera by family", and putting all the family names there. It should solve the problem, and the other categories, like caterpillars, or lepidoptera illustrations would continue in the main category. Other categories could also be grouped in a "lepidoptera by location" category. What do you think? Regards, Leonardo Ré-Jorge (talk) 20:57, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you that the category should be more non-specialist friendly, and also about multi-categorizing images. The problem with a butterfly or moth category is that it would probably be overcrowded, and would end up not useful for non-specialists also. So, i think the taxonomical classification could be inside these categories for common names. This way we would have two or two or three categories inside lepidoptera regarding taxonomy: butterflies (organizing by family), moths (organizing by family), and possibly skippers. This would use common names, but they shouldn't be overcrowded. About catterpillars and other immature stages, we could create a lepidoptera immatures category, with lepidoptera eggs, caterpillars and chrysalis as subcategories. What do you think? Leonardo Ré-Jorge (talk) 18:45, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Lepidoptera is the real (taxonomic) category. So all families of lepidoptera should be installed in this category, not in "butterflies" category. "Butterfly" is only a step of creation of lepidoptera (like caterpillar). --ComputerHotline (talk) 09:09, 16 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The problem with this approach is that there is a lot of families of moths, few known by most users, and five families of butterflies in which most people should categorize the images. As most users that upload butterfly photos are not specialists, we thought it would be better to leave the taxonomical aspects behind a little to have more intuitive and user-friendly categories, without exquisite names. That's why we put the families under the common names they are most known. If you can figure a way to keep taxonomic accuracy and user-friendliness, mainly without overcrowding the lepidoptera category, it would be welcome. PS: this discussion should be done at Category talk:Lepidoptera. Leonardo (talk) 23:24, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Alastair Haines!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
