First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hello Alankazame!

Thank you for providing images to Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. BotMultichill (talk) 12:33, 26 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re: election apportionment diagrams[edit]

Hello, I'm glad to help you. First, I'm assuming that you've already downloaded Inkscape. I must warn you, to run Inkscape without limitations you must have a decent processor and at least 500 MB free RAM memory in your PC. Let's move on, proceed to download and open this file with the program. To edit my original drawing, you only have to use three functions: Group (Ctrl+G), Ungroup (Shift+Ctrl+G) and Fill (Shif+Ctrl+F). Here are the steps:

  1. Select all the objects in the drawing and Ungroup all the objets. To do this, Ungroup several times until the message "No groups to ungroup" appears in the bottom line, below the color palette.
  2. Now, you'll notice that each Senator is composed by two objects: the head and the body. I can see that the Senate of France has fewer seats than the Venezuelan National Assembly, so you're gonna have to erase some senators. In case you need more senators or deputies, you can use this file instead, which contains 264 senators. In case you need even more senators, you can use this other file, and replace each circle with a body and a head (a lot of work and you're gonna end with a huge file (> 1 MB)).
  3. Once you'd the right number of senators in your drawing, you'll proceed to replace the colors. Select all the senators that must have the same color and select Fill. The Fill function has several fill options: No paint, Flat color, Linear gradient, Radial gradient and Pattern. You will select Radial gradient to add the 3D effect.
  4. Under the fill options, you will notice several radial gradient options. Proceed to select the right color and if you can't find it there, you can always Duplicate and Edit an existing gradient. Each gradient has two stops: the dark color and the light color.
  5. Group all the senators with the same color and you're done.
  6. Don't forget to change the text with the number of senators under the diagram.

Please, let me know if you have any additional doubts. I'm not always checking Commons, you'll find me faster in the Spanish Wikipedia. --Dove (talk) 03:50, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, unfortunately, I don’t have a 600 senators 3-D diagram. If you don’t want to work with the 1114 circles (2-D) file, you can import the Senate of Spain file and replace the first 264 2-D senators with the 3-D senators. The remaining senators will have to be replaced one by one! You must use the Align and Distribute toolbox to center the 3D senator (head & body) in the exact position where the 2D senator (circle) is located. At the end, you’ll end up with a headache and a big SVG file (~ 2MB), although you can always save it as PNG to reduce the size, nevertheless, you won’t be able to perform changes in the file later. To select multiple objects, you only have to press SHIFT and CTRL and keep them hold, using the mouse to select the specific objects. I hope my answer will help you. Please, let me know if you have any additional doubts. --Dove (talk) 13:42, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. First, you have to copy a 3D senator and paste it anywhere you want in the diagram. Then, select the whole 3D senator and group the head and the body using the Group function, that way, the senator will be treated as a single object, instead of two, by the Align function. Now, select the 3D senator and holding and then select the 2D senator (aka circle) holding the Shift key. That way, you will select the 3D senator first and will also select the circle. Now press Shift + Ctrl + A and the Align and Distribute toolbox will appear. In the field Relative to make sure that the option Last Selected is set. Now, press the buttons Center on Vertical Axis and Center on Horizontal Axis. This last action will center the 3D senator in the exact spot where the 2D senator is located. Now delete the 2D senator. Do this 400 times. ;) I think that there's an easy way to do that using scripts and all that stuff. I'll give it a try when I get the time. --Dove (talk)

File:Interface Half-Life.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
