There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Hi, I've restored the lost information in this category; although I don't normally approve of categories containing only one image, it is always possible that a new image may be uploaded, in which case it makes sense to have the category populated. I have also added the {{Listed building England}} template, but the link to the English Heritage website seems to be broken at present, and I'll look at that when I have more time to spare. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 16:37, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

Fair enough. I've been trying to tidy up the Crowle cat and sub cats as there were so many disparate pics to wade through on the main page, some repeated in the sub cats. Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 17:01, 11 February 2015 (UTC)

What's the story with this file

Hi Acabashi. What's the story with this file? Will it be possible to use it very soon? Thanks, Eddaido (talk) 08:12, 13 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi there, you can use it any way and whenever per license. It was taken by me, per Exif details, at a vintage auto day display, and is a common exhibit in similar displays at the same venue... other images of the car are on the web but might not be free to use. Details of the car was found here. Best. Acabashi (talk) 21:45, 13 November 2015 (UTC)
Hi Acabashi, I linked this topic to the Wikimedia page not the image so that all the strange fuss about licensing would show. Why is it there? Sorry to make a fuss but I was sure you can explain better than anyone. I hate it when I put an image on display in an article and suddenly its replaced by a whole lot of red script. Regards, Eddaido (talk) 00:35, 14 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for getting back, but I am a little confused Eddaido... probably my fault. Which topic of which Wikimedia page are you referring to ? Does the "strange fuss about licensing" refer to the stuff I add to images permission or something else ? Let's assume the first is the case... After having one of my images put on Facebook without proper attribution I asked for advice from copyright project editors. They said that there is no way to stop people from abusing copyright, even with the latest more tightened cc-by-sa-4.0., and that Wikimedia officialdom will not offer any help. However, any commercial user of files will tend to acknowledge authorship. The extended notes I add to files just reiterates what cc-by-sa-4.0 states, but in a stronger form that will be immediately apparent to anyone wanting to use the file... it is unlikely that people will link to Creative Commons cc-by-sa-4.0 through the template. These notes I have based on other Wikimedia photo uploaders who largely appear professional or semi-professional photographers with their own web sites. What I add strongly emphasises but does no run against the licence stated. I hope this helps. Acabashi (talk) 05:20, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
indeed. See below and above. Eddaido (talk) 06:11, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
This file with all the red stuff on it not the image on it - which you changed at the head of this paragraph and replaced with the image. Surely there must be a better way than this to get the attention you want. Are you quite sure it can't be done better? Eddaido (talk) 06:11, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
I changed the image to a thumb, and added topic text at the head of the section to fit page convention, as when it was added on 13 November 2015‎ it filled the whole page. To understand you I need to define what you are calling 'the file' and 'the image', which can ostensibly be the same thing. When I link to the file/image page, I don't see any 'red stuff' (as script?) which I presume might mean category links... do you mean the red borders ? However, you might be referring to the complete photo within the page itself... again 'the file' and 'the image' could equally refer to the photo. Perhaps you mean as 'the image', the Rover car within the whole picture. Let's assume 'red stuff' means part of the complete photo as it stands, and that your enquiry concerns the red car and the red berries on the pyracantha behind the Rover. If this is the case, the red car and pyracantha berries sets-off the colour neutrality of the Rover, and the texture of the red and green pyracantha, and the texture of the grass sets off the smoothness of the Rover, which I felt was a strong enough part of the photo to accommodate this. We are often limited by prevailing conditions when taking a photo... in this case for a three-quarter angle there was no option but for that background. There may be a case for reducing the red by desaturating it in Photoshop if it is felt that it is too strong, however, this is purely a matter of individual taste. Desaturating one colour and leaving the others saturated as taken can, but not always, give that unnatural feeling of digital-overmanipulation. Before uploading I did consider cropping the photo at the right, but compositionally this crowded the face/front of the Rover, which, like the human face, for visual comfort and basic composition strategy needs more space to look into when balanced with the space behind the subject. There is also another balance to strike... the photo as purely a banal document of a particular subject, with the quality of the photo itself as aesthetic expression... both are not always necessarily exclusive. If you mean a moot necessity of the added copyright notes, the answer is above and should not affect any linking... if this is so, there may be a case to formulate a template to take care of the script I suppose. I have tried my best to understand and answer what I think are your concerns from the opening statement of this discussion.... I don't think I can do much more. Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 15:28, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, I'm sure I asked for all that. You persist in talking about the picture and its your talk page. Do you think it helps to have all that red text stuff? (that you removed from the subject). It certainly frightened me off and made me write here to ask about it. Have a very nice day, Eddaido (talk) 22:20, 16 November 2015 (UTC)
Thank you too Eddaido. I persisted in talking about the picture here because you brought up the concern here. I don't see any red-coloured text (I'm not sure how to make letters red), in the history of the file, so I could hardly remove what was not there :) Anyway, if the the whole thing is sorted out, then all is OK hopefully. Best wishes, Acabashi (talk) 00:01, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
The message I receive is that I should never have dared to comment on what you have done. Right? Eddaido (talk) 00:07, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
I'm still not sure as to 'what I've done', but as to "should never have dared", not at all Eddaido. I am glad for feedback as I tend to work with very little contact from others on Wikimedia. Glad to 'meet' you and happy file uploading, and maybe we will talk again on this Wiki. Acabashi (talk) 00:38, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
I can't believe any of that. Acerbate needs to find and use a good copy editor. Eddaido (talk) 04:31, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
Whatever. My particular strength is in copyediting for English Wikipedia. Acerbate is an English verb or adjective, not a noun. As before, what you say is opaque. If you can't react to obvious good faith, we will leave it there. I don't want to hear from you again. Goodbye. Acabashi (talk) 04:58, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Defaultsort

Hi. I am just wondering what this "defaultsort ... " template is that you are adding to files. I even found it on a fairly obscure foodstuff as {{DEFAULTSORT:Phat sayongte}}. and on th even more more obscure {{DEFAULTSORT:Khao kan chin}} - Takeaway (talk) 22:19, 18 May 2016 (UTC)

Hi. Defaultsort on Wikimedia is a method of fixing a file's cats in a more searchable general grouping to that file across all cats that have been added, or might be added, based on the major element of the file, whether that be a type of food, as in this case, or perhaps sometimes according to geographical feature or place. A lot of files are uploaded with a file name beginning with numbers, or 'the', or the indefinite article 'a' or 'an' (I have in the past been at fault here), which are all pretty meaningless and superfluous, and self-defeating as it doesn't do any favours for the file, as with all searches on and off Wikimedia it's the first word of the file name that gets picked up, with subsequent words in the file name becoming less and less important as part of the search as we run across the file name... of lesser importance, as on YouTube, is the file description. All this is particularly important as virtually all finds for our files happen outside Wikimedia in a general web search. Defaultsort can be helpful for a file in pulling all files of the same subject from all uploaders together for neatness and fairness. Acabashi (talk) 00:09, 19 May 2016 (UTC)
Sorry to ask you all these questions but that's because I am unfamiliar with the use of "defaultsort" templates. How would the "defaultsort" work for, for instance, File:2013 Khao kan chin.jpg? - Takeaway (talk) 11:00, 24 May 2016 (UTC)

don't remove it! If you wish to add a category, go ahead. Leave this template, it is useful. Roseohioresident (talk) 19:56, 5 July 2016 (UTC)

I have added rationale on your page... removing the temp does not alter the date in any way. Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 20:01, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
Your new category has no {{GeoGroupTemplate}}{{-}}. I like that feature of Template:taken on. Lots easier to see where photos are at, without looking through filenames. If you create a template Template:U.S. taken on that includes {{GeoGroupTemplate}}{{-}}, photos from previous and next day, and so on, I might use it. Otherwise, you are breaking something that works. Roseohioresident (talk) 20:10, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
I seen what you are getting at, but a loc temp can be added by the uploader if needed or can be bothered. A bigger problem as I see it is the greedy stacking of users files to the top of all cat lists... some people think they and their pics are better than others on WM and need promotion, certainly when a cat gets saturated. This unfair stacking includes adding a date at the beginning of the file to gain an unfair advantage. I split to sub cats to make the whole thing both fairer to all, and for easier use by searchers. Another good temp for fairness and better sorting is the {{DEFAULTSORT:'name'}} which I apply to my files and happily spread around the project, but this can bring on the ire of the top-of-search-greedy. I see that you have moved your files back and have become category 'top'dog' :) Perhaps if you are concerned with what I have done you will for fairness revert all my sub-catting.'... I won't be exercised about this. Acabashi (talk)
Template:taken on requires 13 keystrokes. If you object to any of my filenames, please add a {{DEFAULTSORT}} to the file. I name files based on subject, not your "top dog" criteria. Today is first I ever heard of "top dog". If that's a windmill you tilt at, good luck.Roseohioresident (talk) 21:05, 5 July 2016 (UTC)
Is it possible to alter the Template:Taken on so that e.g. {{Taken on|2016-07-06|Germany}} would add the file to "Category:Photographs taken in Germany on 2016-07-06". In the case no country is given in the template, the file will be added to the "Category:Photographs taken on 2016-07-06" ? --Estormiz (talk) 06:44, 6 July 2016 (UTC)
Excellent idea. Unfortunately, as pedantic as wikimedia can be, I can see it requiring {{taken on|2016-07-06|The United States of America}}. It would also require manually creating each sub-category. Too many keystrokes. Roseohioresident (talk) 15:31, 6 July 2016 (UTC)

{{DEFAULTSORT}} for post boxes

I've been sorting these by post box identifier as used by Royal Mail. This is so that anyone who has their list can check for omissions. I haven't yet worked out how they determine these numbers apart from the obvious postcode. Do you think this is a good idea? Rodhullandemu (talk) 11:45, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

You are probably right in this particular way of doing it, and defaultsort (however it's sorted), helps illuminate what can be quite a confusion in given file names and overlapping in UK post box cats, and in wider Wikimedia categories. I, like Motacilla, tend to defaultsort by place names, as I fondly assume most people searching the web (not just Wikimedia site files which now don't automatically show at the top of image searches), would search by location (which I fully add to all my file names). But if you are doing a major post box stint your way, I'll leave off location defaultsort in post box cats. Good luck with that arduous task. Best. Acabashi (talk) 12:31, 16 October 2016 (UTC)

I've removed Category:Houses in Shropshire‎ because (1) we don't do this anywhere else (2) having both Houses and Buildings results in overcategorisation and (3) the categories reflect distinct purposes, although I agree that most pubs are also dwellings- but their principal purpose is as an outlet for alcoholic drinks. Merry Christmas! Rodhullandemu (talk) 17:35, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Fair enough. I added it as it was easy to link through to them with Catalot from 'Houses in Shropshire' while looking through Shropshire building images while I'm recatting the 'Shropshire' main cat, which is overblown with Geograph files. I'm going through a clean up of all counties main cat... I've done a lot here but it's a thankless task... I clean them out but more always come back in... I'm dreading the defunct Panoramio files. Season's greeting to you too. Acabashi (talk) 17:57, 26 December 2016 (UTC)

Your renaming requests

Hello Acabashi, I really have no problem to work at your renaming requests, but in my opinion you are so active here, that you can get the filemover-rights here. You can try it, if you want to. Kind regards, --Brackenheim (talk) 18:13, 27 December 2016 (UTC)

Hi Acabashi, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
  • Please leave a redirect behind unless you have a valid reason not to do so. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references. Please see this section of the file rename guideline for more information.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Hi. I was just thinking about the right US copyright template for File:Henry Woods.jpg, but it would rather depend on when the image was first published. Was the postcard dated? Jarry1250 (talk) 17:49, 23 October 2016 (UTC)

Hi!

Thank you for helping out with Deletion Nominations! Your help is greatly appreciated. May I request one tiny fine-tuning? When you give a "I found this at ____" with a link, please don't use Tineye. The Tineye searches expire after a few days and we have to search the images a second time to find them. If you use Tineye to find the image, please provide the actual image URL not the Tineye search string. Again, thank you for all your help! Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:48, 5 January 2017 (UTC)

New categories

Hi Acabashi. When you create a new category, categorize it properly to all corresponding categories. If e.g. Category:Curves (road) in Hungary is categorized under none Hungarian category, it's simply a serious error. I think, it's not so difficult to understand - if the category name combines two (or three) criteria, the category needs to by categorized by all of them. --ŠJů (talk) 16:05, 23 February 2017 (UTC)

Bad file name?

How is File:20th OEMF - Alex Vittum of Ton Trio 01A (14515899756).jpg considered a bad file name? - Jmabel ! talk 06:06, 9 March 2017 (UTC)

Ditto File:AlanHull1991.jpg? Rodhullandemu (talk) 09:49, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
I admit the first one... removed and apologies. The AlanHull1991 would be unsearchable as it's just a string of letters and numbers. Search engines, use a succession of separated words and numbers to understand what we might be looking for. We could leave it as it is, but the file would be/is all but invisible. I hazard that Google images provides for 90%-ish of any particular search that might reveal WikiCommons files. Also, it's always unlikely that anyone who is uninitiated and requiring a file would choose to search through Wikicommons' own cat labyrinth at the bottom of any file just to perhaps come across a person that they might be looking for. I add these to the various bad file cats so they are at hand particularly for me... as you might see, I tend to work through and correct them too. Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 11:11, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
According to Criterion 1, this file would not be eligible for renaming. Rodhullandemu (talk) 11:25, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
Google would find the Alan Hull one on the description text. While running words together like this isn't ideal, it's allowed.
@Rodhullandemu: Interesting coincidence to run across this, I was a big fan of Lindisfarne in the 1970s. - Jmabel ! talk 14:33, 9 March 2017 (UTC)
@Rodhullandemu: Fair enough... accepted. There is a visibility hierarchy in browser image search, for example we see this in YouTube. The top latch-on is the file name (particularly the first few separated words) which would tend to push files towards top of search, second and lesser is any description attached to the file, and thirdly, least important, any tags (we call them cats). So I don't mind leaving those such as 'AlanHull1991' (as an unbroken string of letters and numbers) rather than changing to 'Alan Hull 1991' per Criterion #2, but it will make our files less easy to find. In similar circumstance, I might just change the name rather than stack it in a 'bad file name' cat for my future attention, and that of others who have taken in upon themselves to improve Commons' file visibility. Many thanks for your input. Acabashi (talk) 16:17, 10 March 2017 (UTC)

Bures

As there is only 1 Bures in England wouldn't Category:Bures, Essex and Suffolk be better at Category:Bures, England? Crouch, Swale (talk) 11:43, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

@Crouch, Swale: Looking at it again, to what I changed it does seem a bit clumsy, even if the convention is to follow place with county location... let's hope this turns out to be the only 'Bures' in England. As Wikipedia uses 'Bures, England', I think your suggestion to reverse my change is sound and sensible. Thanks for pointing this out. Acabashi (talk) 12:18, 12 March 2017 (UTC)

Fire insurance plaques

I'm looking for a good image of a Sun Fire Office insurance sign as most are quite small or very poor angles being older Geograph images. It's for an article on Charles Povey. Can you help? Ww2censor (talk) 10:20, 4 September 2017 (UTC)

@Ww2censor: Be glad to help. After looking around I see you are right... there is nothing of quality. We would have to find something on a wall, or publicly viewable and allowable for photography in a museum. There are a lot of reproductions around which would not be suitable. If we can find one in my more usual stamping ground: London, particularly north of the river, West Essex or Hertfordshire, I will make a special journey. Best. Acabashi (talk) 19:35, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for the info. Unfortunately now that my son has moved from London back to Ireland, I hardly ever visit London but even then would need to find one even though I lived there for 5 years when I was in college. As you live in the general area you have a far better chance of finding one. I have a friend in Dublin who had a nice collection and think he even had a Sun Fire Office plaque but he sold them many years ago. I've had this Charles Povey draft hanging around for quite a while but little time devote to research it. He started the Sun Fire Office. Ping me if you find something. Thanks Ww2censor (talk) 21:46, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
I found a Flickr group that includes some freely licenced images and some have the locations mentioned. There was a multiple image from which I have cropped File:Sun Fire Office insurance mark (cropped).jpg which is not too bad if I can get rid of the background. Ww2censor (talk) 22:06, 4 September 2017 (UTC)
Shouldn't be too difficult to get rid of background with Photoshop magic wand and a little bit of healing brush on the string. Acabashi (talk) 20:29, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Wiki Science Competition

sorry for your wrist. Maybe you know already, but I am informing all previous up-loaders consistently. There is a good chance that a botanist-photographer will be in the second-level international jury that evaluate the files from countries like UK, so images of wild flora and fauna are welcome and will be appreciated (if their description is scientific, of course).--Alexmar983 (talk) 13:04, 20 November 2017 (UTC)

"Remove over-categorization" ?

How on earth are images like these over-categorised? [3] [4] Are you suggesting that an image of the National Maritime Museum shouldn't be in Category:National Maritime Museum, London, and that an image of either of the Geenwich Footway Tunnel entrance building shouldn't be in Category:Greenwich foot tunnel? Exactly what categories do you think they are in, or should be in instead? -- KTC (talk) 07:57, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

You are right. My mistake. I think it might be an over-reliance on 'Cat-a-lots' over-categorization tool, which is usually reliable, or might be a bad click select of mine from those offered by the tool. Thanks for picking this up and reverting. Acabashi (talk) 10:35, 25 April 2018 (UTC)
Think cat-a-lots isn't handling it well because of all the hidden categories, from WLM, with location, with maps etc. No worries. -- KTC (talk) 13:04, 25 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:K Lenore Siner Bio.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:K Lenore Siner Bio.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

Religious buildings vs churches

Good time of the day,

You moved the picture Ruhpolding, Wasen, Kapelle, 1.jpeg‎ from Category:Square photos of religious buildings to Category:Square photos of churches). English was not spoken to me in my cradle, and I cannot say whether a chapel is a (subcategory of) a church. Other categories, such as Religious buildings in Martinique, suggest that churches and chapels should be parallel subcategories of religious buildings. What do you think?

Best regards, -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 21:26, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

In English (I don't know about other cultures but I think it fairly typical), chapels are either separate religious buildings of lower rank to churches, or are parts within a church that are set aside for worship of a particular religious figure or for the remembrance of a high-ranking local family, therefore part of 'churches'. So there is a bit of confusion here in these cats. Given that there isn't a separate cat for chapels under 'square photos' (as separate buildings) it might be OK to put chapels under churches (as small churches). However, I am not dogmatic about this, and if you want to revert I have no objection. Or better, as you suggest, we can have a separate category here for 'Square photos of chapels', and put it under under a larger category of 'Square photos of Christian religious buildings' and add 'Square photos of churches' under there too. I'll leave it up to you. Many thanks. Acabashi (talk) 22:08, 5 June 2018 (UTC)
Thanks, I see. -- Renardo la vulpo (talk) 22:43, 5 June 2018 (UTC)

Concerns over crops of Geograph images

Hi. I notice you've been overwriting some Geograph images with cropped versions. In general this is a good idea, but I'm a little concerned that in some cases this makes some {{Derived from}} templates a bit silly. For instance, File:Beach at Port Charlotte, Islay - geograph.org.uk - 24076.jpg is labelled as having a derivative, File:Beach at Port Charlotte, Islay - geograph.org.uk - 24076 (cropped).jpg, but that one is now actually bigger than the "original". I think in cases like this, it might be better to upload your cropped images under a different name. --bjh21 (talk) 09:57, 16 June 2018 (UTC)

Concorso Wiki Loves Monuments Italia 2018 (English version)

Grazie, Nemo 16:01, 12 September 2018 (UTC)

Recent Australian images

Fæ started uploading about 45,000 images from an Australian Flickr user Sheba Also and I see you have been cropping some of them. It would be great if you could also add at least one suitable category to each one at the same time. Thanks in advance.

Grazie in anticipo. Ww2censor (talk) 22:30, 30 September 2018 (UTC)

For quite a few of them I have been doing this with cat-a-lot... useful although not obligatory. Thanks. Acabashi (talk)

Is there a reason you removed the metacat template from this category? It is clearly a metacat because the subcategories are for separate countries and the category has "by country" in its name. --Auntof6 (talk) 21:44, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

No reason at all I'm afraid. I reverted my edit. Thanks. Acabashi (talk) 21:47, 6 October 2018 (UTC)

Hello Acabashi. You moved Category:Bubble Car Museum Langrick to Category:Bubble Car Museum, Langriville. Why? I found only Langrick at google and the website. --Buch-t (talk) 18:15, 26 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi. The Bubblecar Museum, at PE22 7AW, may for its address put its location at Langrick, but we can't always rely on what businesses/organizations would like as their place location. Presumably the County and District councils know where the borders to settlements are as they are the ones who put up settlement entrance road signs, with no doubt a bit of leeway of a few yards. The entrance sign for Langrick is just north from Langrick church outside Farm Seeds, at PE22 7AN, as can be seen in Streetview. If the museum was just a little outside it might be OK to include it, but it is a mile north from the Langrick village border, which puts it outside any Langriville settlement and into the civil parish.
This link explains what I am saying:

Fair enough. When I transferred the file (from, and accepted on English Wikipedia), using 'For The Common Good', I was probably mislead by the EXIF details and the GNU Free Documentation License, which usually gives a reasonable indication of ownership, especially as I noticed that it exists on Japan Wikipedia and is used in an article there. This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:Side view BU (cropped).jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

Yorkshire

Hi, your recents edits imply that these counties are divisions of something called "Yorkshire". True, they roughly correspond to the old ridings within Yorkshire, but are now separate with no relation except a common history. Do you want to reconsider? Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:22, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for your input, and what you say makes sense and I can't deny is strictly true. I may be totally misguided in this, but I thought it might be easier for people to find these four counties under that heading. If you feel that this is not helpful, and/or just completely wrong, I'll change them back, and stop doing it! Acabashi (talk) 12:35, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks, it's also an issue of consistency that we don't do this anywhere else for the old Yorkshire ridings, and we don't do it in Scotland for things like East Ayrshire and North Ayrshire. Cheers. Rodhullandemu (talk) 12:51, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
I'll change it back. Acabashi (talk) 12:52, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Do you have a bigger size? It's so small for such an easy-to-take photo --Podzemnik 02:01, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
Yes, it's only 1,500 × 1,500 pixels (2.25mp) I'll see if I can dig it out from my hard drive. Acabashi 11:29, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
I had a look at the original from which it was cropped, and all the processing I went through. It seems I had to stand back far enough to get it in focus with the shortest 24mm FL available, which then included much of a car bonnet, which wouldn't be interesting enough to include. Many thanks for your query. Acabashi 13:02, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

Annoying element at the bottom in foreground, unfortunately if you get rid of it the crop will look awkward --Poco a poco 11:34, 19 April 2019 (UTC) @Poco a poco: I've played with a 5:4 crop which does take out the bottom blurry element, and some of the guitar and hand, but does also make the obvious focal point of the head more prominent and takes away much of the blur at each side. Do you think I should try that, or is it a lost cause? Many thanks for your constructive comment. Acabashi 13:30, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

  • фотографії пам'яток, які на момент початку конкурсу не мали жодної ілюстрації на Вікісховищі або у Вікіпедії, отримують коефіцієнт 10 в кількісній номінації. Якщо ви маєте фото ще не проілюстрованих пам'яток — це збільшить ваші шанси на перемогу;

Якщо у Вас є запитання, можете звертатися wle@wikimedia.org.ua – Оргкомітет «Вікі любить Землю» (in English). 22:28, 14 May 2019 (UTC)

  • у номінації «Найкраще фото» — файли повинні мати не менше 4 МПкс;
  • у номінації «За найбільшу кількість сфотографованих пам’яток» — оцінка фотографії пам'ятки складається із суми базового та додаткових балів (в останній враховується чи ця пам'ятка вже фотографувалася іншими авторами та скільки фотографій пам'яток уже є з цього населеного пункту);

File:A country singer in Epping Forest, Essex, England.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Category discussion warning

Reportedly haunted locations in the United Kingdom has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2019 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), Ukraine and France (active during November), but it's still open in all the other countries.

If you want to take part where WSC2019 is still open, please consult this page. There is also an international upload category with no national prize.

If you are an expert user, please consider that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in the national categories even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, i.e. "nature and wildlife".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate such files at next step. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Cricket reversions

About this reversion of my edit, could you explain where is the "art rendering" on this? The image only depicts photos of cricket players in a sort of collage, not showing any form of "art" (paintings, sculpture, illustration).

In the other reversion, (this), postcards are not pieces of art themselves so some postcards depict illustrations and other, only photos. Therefore I created the Category:Illustrations of cricket to place postcards that are specifically illustrations.

As far as I know, reverting is rude when the edit is not a vandalism. So please, before reverting compulsively, take a look at the changes first and, I you disagree, you can leave a feedback on my talkpage and discuss the matter. I don't see any valid reason to revoke the edits, as you have done. - Fma12 (talk) 14:10, 25 December 2019 (UTC)

Aboriginal cricket

Hi, About the File:Australian Aboriginal cricket team in England 1868.jpg, if the photo was taken in the UK, the correct license tags are {{PD-UK-unknown}} and {{PD-1923}}.

PD-old only applies when the author is disclosed (not in this case). I'll also working on restoring the photo so it has some scratches in the middle. Photoshop is useful in this occasions. Thanks for your feedback. Fma12 (talk) 22:59, 15 January 2020 (UTC)

No probs in changing the the licence if you feel necessary. You could inform the uploader, however your proposed change is uncontroversial so not really necessary. I thought of repairing the pic, but as it's only 473 KB it could reduce further its already low quality. A lossless import/export for Photoshop healing brush could help. I use DXO Photolab repair tool which is easier and better at this kind of thing. It's probably best to upload a separate repaired version rather than overwriting... but then you probably already know this. Cheers. Acabashi (talk) 12:13, 16 January 2020 (UTC)

Wikimedia Italia

Gentile Acabashi,

Grazie ancora e a presto,

Page moves

Hi, can you please explain your page moves for File:Ateez 'Treasure EP FIN - All to Action' showcase.webm and File:Ateez 'Treasure EP FIN - All to Action' showcase video still.jpg? Your actions are not supported by either the language policy or the file renaming guideline. Contrary to your edit summary, there is no obligation for file names to be in English. ƏXPLICIT 00:43, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Oh, I thought there was, or at least should have the courtesy of a translation... however, thank you for pointing that out, and the links. Perhaps you might like to provide an adequate description translation so that the file might be more readily accessible to and understood by the majority of people, after all, English is the language most understood by the majority of the world's population, I suppose that's why we have categories written in English rather than any other of the myriad world languages. But bear in mind that the vast majority pick up our files through a Google search—whose algorithms it is said use the file name for about 75% of the search hook, and the rest, the description—not through direct go-to to Wikimedia, which is, I'm sure you know, by far the least well-known repository of images, despite our fondness for it. I have no objection to you returning the file name to it's original—which you can do as you are an administrator—so that it again becomes undecipherable for the vast majority of people. Many thanks for your input. Acabashi (talk) 08:53, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

Nikon1803•(Do you wanna talk to me?) 16:17, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Doesn't seem to want to do that... suggest using the request change template per the previous one, or getting an administrator to fix it for you. It may be because the file name was previously changed. Acabashi (talk) 16:44, 14 July 2020 (UTC)

Wiki Loves Monuments 2020 in Ukraine: two weeks are left!

Not my file. I only optimized it to improve a low quality image before it was prodded for deletion. Acabashi (talk) 08:44, 20 July 2021 (UTC)

Dear uploader of European Science Photo Competition 2015 and Wiki Science Competition 2017 and Wiki Science Competition 2019, we would like to remind you that Wiki Science Competition 2021 has started in the whole world. It is now completed in Russia (active in May), but it's still open in almost all the other countries.

If you want to take part in WSC2021, please consult this page. Only some national categories are associated to competitions with local prizes.

If you are an expert user, we remind you that images uploaded within the deadline can be included in any case in their national category even if not uploaded with the main interface.

Please keep in mind that there is a new category this year, that is "astronomy".

If you already took part in a country that has completed its upload phase, please consider improving the description in English of your files (click on the edit button), since such description is what the international jury will use to evaluate them. World finalists will be finalized after March 2020.

Sorry for bothering you and have a nice wiki.

Categorization I don't follow

Why are File:Church Times Cricket Cup final 2019, Diocese of London v Dioceses of Carlisle, Blackburn and Durham 52.jpg and other similar photos in Category:Outdoor tables? - Jmabel ! talk 02:19, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

Joint team from the three diocese, as described in the description. Acabashi (talk) 12:00, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

  • Which has what to do with outdoor tables? (Sorry I missed the colon first time around). - Jmabel ! talk 15:06, 24 May 2022 (UTC)
  • I suppose the 'outdoor tables' is a parent category to 'picnic tables', but oddly not to 'beer garden tables' which should probably have 'outdoor' as a parent. Even though 'beer' and 'picnic' can be interpreted as 'outdoor', they can be either stand alone tables or with built-in seats depending on the context. However, 'outdoor tables' is probably not appropriate in this case. Acabashi (talk) 16:49, 24 May 2022 (UTC)

Good luck with that one. Authenticity fully EXIFed, and with detailed description. Please try to understand English... copywriting is to do with sentence structure, grammar and syntax for advertising. Perhaps you should look at your own uploads first, which to me seem a load of blatant steals, before you try a lame cheap shot back. Have a good day. Acabashi (talk) 14:34, 3 July 2022 (UTC)

5 days of Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Ukraine

Wiki Loves Monuments 2022 in Ukraine

  • завантажено понад 11000 світлин, які зображують майже 3700 об’єктів культурної спадщини;
    • з них фотографії 180 пам'яток — вперше подані на конкурс;
  • понад 500 світлин подано у спецномінації «Фотоплівка»;
  • вже більше 220 учасників та учасниць;
    • з них більше 130 — зареєструвалися вже під час конкурсу.

Applying categories

I have just been using the category Trees in Essex and observed a dozen pictures of a Cricket match, lots of pictures of earthworks, and many more pictures of churches, which I think mat be all your work. All these are tagged with lots and lots of categories, including "Trees in Essex"

I want to point out here that the reason for the categorisation is NOT to simply describe what is in your picture.

The purpose is encyclopaedic. It is so that a person who is searching for a good picture of an English Oak, or a Tulip Tree or a Deodar Cypress can find one.

One of the pictures that I saw there had trees along the horizon, but not closer, and of no practical use to anyone who searched for "Tree".

So when you categorise a picture as "Tree" then a tree needs to be a significant element within the picture, not simply an element that is a background to men playing cricket. The cricket photos, etc, clog up the main page, and make it difficult to find the trees for the jungle.

So if you are also labelling your pictures "men", "blue sky", and "green grass", then please don't! It is really superfluous!

Label all the pictures with the name of the cricket club, a couple of the BEST pictures with "Cricket in Essex" and also a couple of the most relevant with the name of the village, or estate where the match is taking place. This provides useful links. But they don't all need to be labelled with every possible factor.

The same goes for all the churches..... only label the relevant characteristics. If, for example, you were at Long Melford, then you might have one photo specifically of the clipped yews, which is a useful tree photo.

I hope that this is helpful! Amandajm (talk) 15:44, 4 April 2023 (UTC)

Hi. I combined the DRs as they were for the same user with the same reason. In the future you can use COM:MDR to open a deletion request for multiple files at once. Cheers. Cryptic-waveform (talk) 16:21, 30 May 2023 (UTC)

Apologies

I cropped two photos you uploaded (Albion Street blue door and windows and woman with Yorkshire Terrier at Broadstairs Kent England) and uploaded them as new files but just noticed the note about not uploading a modified image without consultation. If you don't like these crops then I can request their deletion. The original uploads still remain, these are just new cropped versions. My apologies for missing this note. Helper201 (talk) 09:53, 28 June 2023 (UTC)

These look OK to me as they are uploaded as a completely different file. The only problem I would have would be if the original had been overwritten and/or had been photo-edited. Thanks for the heads up. Acabashi (talk) 10:40, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
