OK so the airport still has signs with the old spelling, and the international flying information has new spelling. Bodoh sekali. or in english dumb. Inconsistent. sats (d) 09:23, 16 August 2013

Hello Sats, it's not necessarily a matter of dumbness. My own experience regarding spelling in Indonesia in general, and more particularly spelling of personal names (including mine) is a total lack of strictness... More generally, there is a tendency to an "EGP" ("emangnya gue pikirin") attitude :-) Humboldt (talk) 14:24, 16 August 2013 (UTC)

Category discussion warning

Pilbara region of Western Australia has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!

Kemboja[edit]

SLQ no source[edit]

I included a direct source link on the original 2007 upload of File:Albert Street Brisbane 1883.jpg but Jon Vandenberg removed it in 2011 when he was standardising the metadata of the SLQ images (the link may be broken now, it was 7 years ago). The "no source" message seems to be built into the template when the source field is not populated. Was that what you were asking? May need to talk to Jon as he seems to have tackled the standardisation process... --Canley (talk) 01:35, 28 May 2014 (UTC)

File:Aaradheshwor Temple 08.jpg[edit]

Why do you renamed "File:आराध्यश्वर मन्दिर 08.jpg" into file "File:Aaradheshwor Temple 08.jpg"? Look at Commons:File_renaming site, section "Which files should not be renamed?" Criterion#2: Files should NOT be renamed only because the filename is not English and/or is not correctly capitalized. Remember, Commons is a multilingual project, so there's no reason to favor English over other languages.
Such a renaming can be done only when it is an uploader's request, but it wasn't... Wieralee (talk) 14:43, 19 October 2015 (UTC)

Cape Leeuwin[edit]

Hi, checking the category Lighthouses in Australia by name I noticed that the names, not all, were in alphabetical order as first name (cape, point, head), that was the reason of my changing. Battle of Grunwald[edit]

Hi there! I recently marked this file as a duplicate of this one. The earlier was just a picture someone took at the museum. The latter was the exact digital copy, made by the Museum's own photographers, with correct lights to make sure the colors are as true to the original as possible, made according to the best standards of painting reproduction. It took our Wikipedian-in-Residence and our GLAM wizard quite some effort to acquire the copy in decent quality and size. Yet for some reason you deleted the superior version and redirected it to the duplicate. Could you please, please make it right? Halibutt (talk) 11:46, 27 May 2016 (UTC)

Hey, thanks. As to Malczewski, again I double-checked that the text of {{Duplicate}} in Polish and English is the same and it is: it should be placed on the page of the file that should be deleted. OTOH quite often responding admins delete the wrong file, for some reason. It's not the first time :) Perhaps we should change the wording in the template to make it more obvious? Or perhaps create another template to be pasted at the file to be kept? What do you think?
And yes, same goes for Matejko: the version marked as duplicate should be deleted, the one not marked should not. Halibutt (talk) 07:12, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Hmmm, perhaps an ideal solution would be a gadget with some easier way to actually combine the two files, or rather their descriptions. In many cases on one side we have a GLAM or WiR cooperation file, with description done by the museum itself. On the other however we have a file with description done by the community, sometimes with mistakes, but more often than not with more categories and some more fields. I try to import all the missing info into the better file before nominating, but apparently sometimes I tend to forget about it. Anyway, the {{Artwork}} templates tend to be more and more reliant on Wikidata, which means that in some time we'll be able to fix such problems once and for all. Halibutt (talk) 10:25, 30 May 2016 (UTC)
Oh boy, oh boy, another one... [1]. Just to avoid confusion I uploaded both File:Napoleon Orda - Mir.jpg and File:Napoleon_Orda_-_Mir_-_cropped.jpg, both scanned by the National Library of Poland, with colours as true to the original as possible. Yet you deleted the superior version and redirected it to the lo-res version with skewed colours. Halibutt (talk) 12:11, 1 June 2016 (UTC)
Nyah, I get it's my mistake, I shouldn't have been nominating near-duplicates for speedy deletion in the first place apparently. As someone pointed out, those should be kept for people to chose should they want to use smaller files with skewed colours and lower resolution, or perhaps deleted using the standard procedure. Plus, all our files are described in English as well, so it shouldn't be a problem to get what's what, or is it? Halibutt (talk) 09:22, 2 June 2016 (UTC)

IMO 9297864[edit]

Sorry, but you're neither senile nor demented. A hull is allocated an IMO number, and that never changes. So IMO 9297864 is the hull that's always been IMO 9297864. On the other hand, names can and do change. The hull that used to be Maersk Detroit (ie IMO 9297864) is now MSC Anya (see, eg, the ship's maritime connector entry for confirmation). Is that clear as mud?

(Incidentally, I'd been intending to photograph MSC Anya on departure when that was scheduled for 15:00 on Saturday, but the scheduled departure time was later changed to 18:00 and later again to 20:00, so I gave the ship a miss altogether. Okay, now I understand. I'll use your example. Yes, the images seem to be identical. Only the names of the files differ, and the longer name is more satisfactory. "Straßenseite 32" means only "Street side, no. 32", and with that description, the image could be the street side of any building, anywhere in the world. By contrast, "Würzburg-Altstadt-Sanderstraße 7-Straßenseite 32" means "Würzburg old town, 7 Sander Street, street side, no. 32", and so you know exactly what you're seeing in the image. Bahnfrend (talk) 13:37, 8 February 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, and also in the descriptions. Bahnfrend (talk) 13:50, 8 February 2017 (UTC)

The one on the right appears to be HMS Juno (1895), but the one on the left appears to be the wrong colour, and have one too many funnels, and to have funnels that are too thin, to be either HMS St George (1892) or RMS Ophir. Rocko pictures[edit]

I got a bit disappointed with the lack of good pictures on the Rockingham area here so I decided to take a few and upload them here. The stormy days we had provided a good opportunity for some unusual pictures (see wrecked boats images). I'm a very average photographer at best and my own little camera did not survive swimming with the seals up at Jurien a few month ago (awesome experience!). I had to borrow my daughters. My wife got a good camera however and does great photos, I'm hoping I can get her to take some images for me. Catching up is not impossible but I'm flying out to the Pilbara tomorrow for a shut down. Are you still at the State Library a lot? If so, I might drop into the city for a day at some stage and we have a coffee. Calistemon (talk) 03:50, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

Hi JarrahTree, why did you remove the "original" and promote the "duplicate"? Expedition 59 Soyuz MS-11 Landing (NHQ201906250003).jpg is Bill Ingalls' original with less compression and the better color space Adobe RGB 1998. Fremantle Ports or Harbour?[edit]

I would like to gauge your opinion of Fremantle Ports and Harbour. The commons category is at Category:Fremantle Harbour and the English Wikipedia article is also at Fremantle Harbour. The official website however seems to be Fremantle Ports, which oversees the inner and outer Harbour, consisting of assets at Fremantle as well as at Kwinana. I've created a number of sub-categories, like Category:Kwinana Bulk Terminal and Category:Kwinana Bulk Jetty. The CBH Jetty further south is another that is part of the Port. Should all these be sub-categories of Fremantle Harbour or should a new master, Category:Fremantle Ports, be created? What is your opinion? Note that the Fremantle Harbour article also has some detail on the Outer (Kwinana) Harbour. Calistemon (talk) 11:12, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Palm Beach Jetty
What about Wednesday next week (17th)? I'm at work now (night shift) but back next Tuesday (but will be tired and grumpy that day from night shift). Wednesday is about the only day I have got. Re:hello?[edit]

Hi. Following your message I'm not sure City of Canning works are Government works (in this case the uploader must use {{PD-AustraliaGov}}). In my opinion these works are not Government works and only anonymous/pseudonymous works published before 1 January 1955 are in the public domain. Please read Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Australia for more details. If you don't agree with this rationale please feel free to open a regular deletion request. Kind regards, --Patrick Rogel (talk) 11:23, 10 July 2019 (UTC)

@Patrick Rogel and JarrahTree: The copyright in these works is owned by the City of Canning, and they are releasing them under a CC-BY-SA license. The OTRS permission is in the process of being lodged and the ticket number will be added to the uploads soon. The reason you've given for their deletion is that they have no source, but they do and it's correct (the City of Canning photographic collection). — Sam Wilson ( TalkContribs ) … 11:26, 10 July 2019 (UTC)
the owner of the works is by definition under the act the employer as these photos were taken as part of an employee's duties. The fact the employer was the City of Canning is irrelevant and as such its nothing to do with pd-gov because its the copyright holder who has released the images under CC-by-SA. The first ten images in Category:Western Australia[edit]

Going through the images in Category:Western Australia and assigning them to a more suitable and precise category I can't make up my mind about the first ten images of this list. They are all about the HMAS Sydney and while there is of course the obvious connection with WA there is nothing in these images indicating a precise time and location for them. Quite possibly these were taken thousands of kilometres away from WA, I just don't know. What would you suggest, just remove the WA category altogether on those ten? Your advice would be appreciated. Calistemon (talk) 13:44, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

No worries, I will leave those ten to last, another 400 images to go, about 350 done. Calistemon (talk) 14:17, 31 July 2019 (UTC)

Copyright question[edit]

Sorry, me again. This time I have a copyright question: File:Hon Matthew Swinbourn.jpg is copied from the WA Parliament website and I'm wondering what the copyright status is there. The Copyright and conditions of use page on the website sort of indicates it might be ok to use in the English Wikipedia article (where it isn't actually used) but I'm not sure it is fit for commons, especially under the current licence. I always struggle with copyright questions, do you know? Calistemon (talk) 08:28, 2 August 2019 (UTC)

Woodman Point & Munster, Western Australia[edit]

I had a great opportunity this morning to take the dog around Woodman Point and uploaded some photos. Now, looking at the Woodman Point article on the English Wikipedia, it states that it is located at Munster, Western Australia. The Munster, Western Australia article there repeats that claim. My UBD for Perth as well as Google maps show Woodman Point squarely at Coogee. Munster only got the Woodman Light, as far as I can see, and no part of the Woodman Point Regional Park is located in that suburb. Am I missing something here or is the English Wikipedia just plain wrong? Calistemon (talk) 15:23, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: File:Chandrayaan-2_lander_and_orbiter_integrated_stack.jpg being older by many months had community translated captions in many languages and it was identical to the retained File:Chandrayaan-2_lander_and_orbiter_integrated_module.jpg wouldn't it had been more suitable to simply change source to gain copyright license of PIB.nic.in rather than deletion? Ohsin (talk) 10:09, 2 November 2019 (UTC)

I agree and also my upload File:Alms box for the community schools (389489136).jpg was in 2015 while the new file is from 2019. and you did not copied the categorys from one file to another. -- Geagea (talk) 15:53, 28 November 2019 (UTC)

Perth Stadium images[edit]

Hi JarrahTree, I've got a question in regards to Perth Stadium images which you may know the answer to. While there is 188 images in Category:Perth Stadium these all seem to be from the opening. We don't have any of subsequent events there (AFL, Cricket, Soccer, etc.). Do you know whether there is a reason, e.g. copyright law? The stadium website just states that visitors can't take images for commercial purposes, Commons doesn't seem to fall under that for me. I have a few pictures from the last Scorchers game but I'm reluctant to upload in case it's a copyright violation of some sort. Do you have any advice? Calistemon (talk) 06:27, 27 January 2020 (UTC)

Non substitued user license[edit]

Hi JarrahTree, I noticed that you use a non substituted user license (User:JarrahTree/K200). Note that this is generally depreciated, and if done the template has to be permanently protected. So nobody else can temper with the license of your files unnoted. I will ask some admin to protect the page. Thanks --Schlurcher (talk) 14:47, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Warning sign on Mundaring Weir Road.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Please participate in the Universal Code of Conduct consultation on Wikimedia Commons![edit]

Dear JarrahTree

Thank you for your hard work to create the sum of all knowledge that is freely sharable to every single human being across the world. As our diverse community grows, we need a guideline that will help all of our work collectively and constructively where everyone feels safe, welcomed, and part of a team. That is why the Wikimedia movement is working on establishing a global guideline called the Universal Code of Conduct, often referred to as UCoC.

After the months-long policy consultation, we have prepared a policy (available in many languages) that has been ratified by the Board of Trustees. We’re currently in the second phase of the process. During this round of consultation, we want to discuss the implementation of this policy. As a member of the functionary team of Wikimedia Commons, your opinion on enforcement is of great value. We want to hear from you on how this policy can be enforced on the Wikimedia Commons community and what might be needed to do so. There are a few enforcement questions so you can easily outline your answers based on them. Please do not hesitate to bring any more questions/challenges you think are not yet discussed.

The discussion is taking place on Commons:Universal Code of Conduct consultation. You can also share your thoughts by replying to this message (Please ping me so I get notified), posting your message on my talk page. I am aware that some thoughts cannot be expressed publicly, so you can always share your opinion by emailing me as well.

As a valued member of the Commons community, please share your thoughts, ideas, and experiences that relate to UCoC. Let us know what needs to be improved so we can build a more friendly and cooperative space to increase editor engagement and retention of new users.

Wikimedia projects are governed by you. So, it is you who needs to step up to ensure a safe, comfortable, and pleasant working environment.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you! Wikitanvir (WMF) (talk) 10:18, 5 February 2021 (UTC)

Please take a short survey regarding UCoC[edit]

Hello JarrahTree,

I would like to inform you that we now have a survey in place to take part in the UCoC consultation. It is not a long one and should take less than 10 minutes to complete. You can take the survey even if you have already participated in the on-wiki consultation. It has a different set of questions and allows you to participate anonymously and privately.

As a member of the Commons functionaries, your opinion is especially essential. Please click here to participate in the survey.

You are still welcome to participate in the on-wiki discussions. If you prefer you can have your say by sending me an email. You can also drop me an email if you want to have a one-to-one chat.

Thank you for your participation! Wikitanvir (WMF) 13:54, 12 February 2021 (UTC)

How we will see unregistered users[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

[edit]

Hello,

I am messaging you because a contest for a sound logo for Wikimedia is being developed and your opinion as a Wikimedia Commons admin is appreciated. My team would like to know if it is possible for the top finalist sound logos in the contest to have attribution temporarily hidden from public view until all the votes are final? The idea is to let the public judge the sound logo contestants based on the merit of the logo, not the person or people who made it. Again, any feedback is appreciated.

Thank you,

New Images of Central Java uncategorized[edit]

Hi JarrahTree. Could you look at these new uploads by a new user who seems not aware of the value of proper categorizing? Could you place the Indonesian language template for alerting this user to categorize their works "Please categorize your works so they can be found" on their user page? And show them where to start; where to find their own uploads and their main cat, possibly this one: Category:Central Java, in which I placed some that could be moved to subcats of it. I suppose an english text alert would not work in this case, and I don't speak Indonesian. Also I'm not familiar with mobile uploads and categorizing options in that app. Thank you.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Wikimania presentation[edit]

Thank you for your Wikimania presentation again. I was pleasantly surprised by your finding that simply having an organisation encourages participation, and how big an influence a "big-name" guest speaker has on editor recruitment and retention! Deryck Chan (talk) 18:27, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

P.S. The organisers have uploaded your slides here on Commons and posted the video on the WMF YouTube channel here.
