Should we place a "see also Category:Paintings with signatures" note within the include only section? --Mattes (talk) 18:32, 13 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To me there are so many signed paintings that it is not very useful to have a see also in each file. But maybe we could make Category:Paintings with signatures an automatic hiddencat. As of now, most paintings using the template are not in the category.--Zolo (talk) 10:14, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Signed vs signature[edit]

Signed seems to be more often used than signature outside Commons. However, since there now is an "inscriptions" field, I think we should use signature because:

  • It would use the same grammar as for other types of inscriptions for which it is hard to have a verb (we can have "caption:" but I am not so sure we shold have "captionned:")
  • "Inscriptions: signature" seems grammatically more logical than "Inscriptons: signed"
  • It seems way more natural to have "signature" than "signed" in image annotations.

I have changed the French version, can I do the same for English ?--Zolo (talk) 10:14, 26 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Undated[edit]

Would it not be useful to add to the template ‘undated’?

Centercenter, top and bottom not always helpful[edit]

Updating the description of File:Lawrence Alma-Tadema - Ask Me No More.jpg, I noticed two things:

  • If 1 and 2 are both set to "center", "centercenter" is displayed as position.
  • Just having "top", "bottom", and "center" as vertical positions does not always allow for a precise description.

In this case, the signature is on the marble bench, closer to the center than to the bottom, but still definitely in the lower half of the painting.—Austriacus (talk) 14:30, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]
