flickr descriptions[edit]

I'm not really in favor of treating the original title and original description as worth preserving. Generally, Flickr descriptions are full of POV and irrelevant anecdotes, these should be edited to be more useful for Wikimedia. The titles, too, are rarely helpful. Perhaps it would be best to merge title and description into one. Certainly, they should be freely edited.Eloquence 09:04, 28 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's worth preserving all the information that's available, at least in the history of the image description page.
What is the {{{photographer_location}}} field? I think this template should only include fields that all images on Flickr have. I couldn't find any obvious way to assign this field. User:dbenbenn 00:42, 5 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The location of the photographer ;-), e.g., "Berlin, Germany". I disagree with the last statement; we shouldn't lose information even if it is only available for some uploads.--Eloquence 17:00, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if you have additional information, you can always add it after the template. I agree that no information should be lost. The problem is simply that for photos where the location is unknown, the resulting {{{photographer_location}}} is kind of ugly.
Also, the current wording has a somewhat different meaning. "Photographer: Bob from Berlin" means Bob was born in Berlin, not that the photograph was taken in Berlin. Perhaps it would be clearer as
Photograph information: Taken on {{{taken}}}, in {{{photographer_location}}}.
User:dbenbenn 23:28, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When the location is not known, just pass a blank parameter. FlickrLickr should already do this; see Image:TM Rabbit.jpg as an example. As for your other suggestion, the location does refer to the photographer's place of residence, absolutely not to the place where the photo was taken. This is information a Flickr user can enter in their user profile about themselves. See Image:Grand Place Nr 3.jpg for an example; the photographer is from Moosburg, Germany, but the image was taken in Brussels - there are hundreds of pictures like that. So the change you suggest would be completely in error. And that you are "from" a place does not automatically mean that you were born there.--Eloquence 00:35, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. You had confused me with "The location of the photographer", above.
So the short answer is, to figure out what to put as photographer_location, you go the the photographer's user page, then click on "Profile", and the location might be there. There's other information, too. In the example you gave above, [1] says "I'm Male, 30 and Single." I don't see how being from Moosburg is any more relevant to a photo of Brussels than being a single 30 year old is. User:dbenbenn 04:00, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The location is often helpful when putting the picture in a broader context, e.g., I'm more likely to trust a description of an object in Bangladesh by a native Bangladeshi than by a tourist visitor.--Eloquence 19:54, 8 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reviewer[edit]

What should be in the field "reviewer"? I uploaded seagrambuilding.jpg and don't know what that means. Could somebody write the right thing into that field? TZM de:T/T C 13:43, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I believe, it is the Name of the One who decided (reviewed (re=wieder, view=sehen) the Image) to upload this image to commons, gave it an accurate description&Categorys. --Stefan-Xp 13:56, 10 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

New layout sugestion[edit]

I have a suggestion for a new layout for this template. It's just a sketch and I appreciate feedback.

Check it at {{Flickr/Test}}

Two points are addressed in this new layout. First, flickr colors are used to increase identification. And Second, the image description is given more space.

What do you think about it? May we go on and change? :) There is any problem in reproducing Flickr logo in html? Best regards, --Abu badali 21:17, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Only for FlickrLickr?[edit]

Does this template belong on Flickr images that are not part of the FlickrLickr project?--Pharos 21:15, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to this template[edit]

When changing this template, please mind the fact that there are over 5,000 images uploaded by FlickrLickr using it. Renaming variables leads to these template calls no longer working!--Eloquence 01:52, 20 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think about changing the look of this template to another one similar to the {{Information}}? So we would have an unitarian/einheitliches (uniform, standardized, standard etc./ design on Commons which would be easier to navigate for users. Longbow4u 14:37, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I saw that Pharos tried that recently, and it did not work. Perhaps you could help? Longbow4u 14:41, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
A unitarian design? ;-) This could be done by turning this into a meta-template that calls Template:Information using the Flickr variables. If you want to give it a go, I suggest creating a copy of this template and a copy of an image page using it (e.g. White tigers drinking.jpg) first, and to tweak it until it works.--Eloquence 09:06, 29 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Is this compromise okay now? TZM de:T/T C 14:01, 30 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Looks fine to me!--Eloquence 13:27, 2 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks TZM, that is nice. :-) Longbow4u 18:49, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, what happened to the photographer_location parameter? Was something wrong with that? howcheng {chat} 18:26, 7 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Flickr images, new policy[edit]

I'd like to remind all uploaders of Flickr images of the changed policy regarding the usability/legality of Flickr Images at the Commons. Please see COM:SXC for more information. Short: All images uploaded past 29. December 2005 need to have a written permission to be used here at the Commons or they will be deleted sooner or later. --Denniss 01:16, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe a stupid comment, but what does Flickr has to do with stock.xchng? The sites are completely different, so COM:SXC is not in effect for Flickr images. NielsF 01:24, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Neils is right, this change has nothing to do with Flickr.--Pharos 04:29, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my fault. I should take some sleep before posting. --Denniss 09:17, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

permission[edit]

should be lowercase. — Omegatron 00:50, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with some author names[edit]

See [2] and you'll find that flickr nicks like avatar-1 are not displayed correctly. Only 1 shows up. So the hyphen seems to be handled wrong. Could this be fixed please? --Überraschungsbilder 01:54, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This has nothing to do with the hyphen - the cause is that the author's name was not given as a template parameter (I have fixed that). The "1" showed up because unlabeled external links are automatically numbered, and it's the first on on the page. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 13:32, 7 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
oops, I was just looking for "author", not "photographer" after Dodo's change. Thank you :-) --Überraschungsbilder 05:52, 17 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Why not use {{Information}}?[edit]

Maybe a stupid question, but... why doesn't this template references the {{Information}} in it's source, so that changes in {{Information}} got automatically transfered here, keeping consistency? --Abu badali 01:33, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Good question. Now it does. --Flominator 16:41, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Your updated version has a couple of problems, Flominator. It doesn't allow other_versions; it should pass an empty value to Permission if none is specified, and it doesn't degrade gracefully if no "reviewer" is specified. Could you please fix these issues or revert to the older version? --bdesham  17:57, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
How about mapping title into description when description is blank? {{#if:{{{description|}}}|[{{{title}}} {{{description}}}]|{{{title}}}}} I think is the starting point...

other_versions[edit]

The following snippet should be added after permissions to make this template work more like {{Information}}

{{#switch: {{{other_versions|}}}
|   =
| - =
| none =
| #default = <tr><td style="background: #ccf; text-align: right; vertical-align: top; padding-right: 0.4em; font-weight: bold" id="fileinfotpl_ver">Other versions</td><td>
{{{other_versions}}}</td></tr>}}

New version[edit]

I have made a new version of this template, which you can see at {{Flickr/new version}}. The changes are:

  • Calls {{Information}} directly. This ensures that changes to {{Information}} will be reflected here immediately.
  • Uses uppercased-name parameters like "Description" for consistency with {{Information}}. (The old parameter names are still supported as well.)
  • Add support for "other_versions".

It makes extensive use of template syntax (to support the old parameter names), and I've probably messed something up, so could someone take a look at the syntax to fix my errors? Thanks! --bdesham  15:51, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It looks good so far, but I haven't had the chance to use it yet.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 22:33, 19 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I made a little fix to "other versions", looks great otherwise! --Magnus Manske 12:31, 20 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

{{Editprotected}}

I have made a few more changes to {{Flickr/new version}}, inspired by Flominator's recent changes. Specifically, I've changed it to use {{Flickrreview}} in the Source field when appropriate, and the new Review_Date parameter can be specified for that template. Could this new version replace the current one? Thanks, bdesham  18:24, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The {{Flickrreview}} template should go inside the Permission section, right bellow the licensing tag. --Abu badali 21:58, 24 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done. --bdesham  03:16, 25 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Other versions again[edit]

Can someone fix other_versions? I guess it was broken in the above fix. Changing the other_versions tag to |other_versions = should work, see User:UserB/sandbox for the example. Thanks. --UserB 18:35, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. howcheng {chat} 23:16, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Defaultsort[edit]

Could an administrator please add {{DEFAULTSORT:Flickr}}? Thanks Thadius856 20:32, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Done. howcheng {chat} 23:16, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with cc-by or cc-by-sa 2.x license tags[edit]

There seem to be some problems if using cc-by 2.x or cc-by-sa 2.5x license tags inside the Flickr template - these license tags do not add the proper CC license category to images. Please see also Template talk:Cc-by-sa-2.0 for some more information. Someone with knowledge should check whether the problem is located inside the Flickr or the CC 2.x license tags. CC 1.x and 3.x tags seem to work. --Denniss 14:52, 9 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

English[edit]

en:Template:Flickr now matches this. Evrik (talk) 17:05, 27 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Category[edit]

{{Editprotected}} Please change Category:Flickr to Category:Files from Flickr according to this cfd. -- User:Docu at 11:44, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done - It can take some time before all the files are moved. Huib talk 13:52, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Still being used ?[edit]

Are there tools that still use it? From this, it seems that the few recent uses are manual. While the template has some advantages and it might not be worth converting old uses, it could probably be marked as "superseded".  Docu  at 12:37, 4 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish translation of "Reviewer"[edit]

{{editprotected}} The field "Reviewer" should be translated to Spanish as "Revisor", just like in {{Flickrreview}}. Thank you. Allan Javier Aguilar Castillo (talk) 15:39, 25 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Title="[edit]

{{Edit request}} The image at File:Boat in Victoria Dock.jpg currently uses {{Flickr}}. Part of the description seems to be in "title=". This doesn't display any more as that field was from this template last year.

Possible other pages using {{Flickr}} with "title=". In that case, the "title=" part would need to be moved into the description field (on every file description page) or "title=" readded to this template. --  Docu  at 19:20, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maintenance category for pages using nonexistent parameters[edit]

{{Edit request}} I suggest adding an examination for nonexistent parameters used in file description pages transcluding Template:Flickr. This has previously been done for Template:Information. The affected file description pages are found in Category:Pages using Information template with incorrect parameter. Thousands of parameter errors (spelling errors, markup errors, vandalism, use of wrong template) have already been fixed (semi-)automatically or manually. Thoughts? --Leyo 08:56, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This could help address the problem described in the "Title=" section above.   — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 15:38, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Leyo: ✓ Done, please see Category:Pages using Flickr template with incorrect parameter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 06:10, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! This edit will likely reduce the number of files in that category (currently 4851) significantly. --Leyo 14:34, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Leyo: You're welcome, and thanks for using Taken/taken, but should we allow Date/date for {{Information}} compatibility?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 15:29, 12 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Well, most parameters are different. --Leyo 21:27, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I cleaned out the category. --Leyo 00:24, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edit request to fix wikilink in external link error[edit]

Please update the template with the code in {{Flickr/sandbox}} in order to fix a problem that occurs when there is a wikilink in |photographer_location=. You can see the error at {{Flickr/testcases}}. Thank you. Jonesey95 (talk) 00:34, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
