given the exact room in wikidata I would appreciate this information to be readable as department/Current location, sometimes at least it worked, now it doesn't, e.g. File:Marco Basaiti - Vocazione dei figli di Zebedeo.jpg, institution and department give the same information --Oursana (talk) 23:44, 22 November 2020 (UTC)

Oursana most of the logic for department/Current location fields is in Module:Wikidata_art get_institution function at like 563. The code is overcomplicated as there is general set of rules and then special rules for some large institutions which used available properties in unusual ways. I traced the code and in line 624 there is a special narrow case for the exact scenario Call of the Sons of Zebedee (Q20091450) falls in, where department/Current location is overwritten with content of "institution" field. This line was needed for proper rendering of some items unfortunately I did not write notes about which ones. Before undoing that I will need to figure out why that special case was there. I will keep you posted. --Jarekt (::talk) 14:15, 23 November 2020 (UTC)

@Jarekt: File:Thomas Charles Reginald Agar-Robartes (1844–1930), by Walter William Ouless.jpg is another example. Removing the two institution lines, it should show the same based on Thomas Charles Agar-Robartes, 6th Viscount Clifden (1844-1930) (Q52229021). Multichill (talk) 23:05, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

Use main subject (P921) in this template

The statement main subject (P921) is used on quite a few of items about paintings. @Jarekt: can you update the template to use this for the "depicted people" field? See the top list on Wikidata for some usage examples. Main subject is also used a lot for religious art. Would be nice to show that data too in this template to provide context. Not sure in what field would be best exactly. Any suggestions? Multichill (talk) 14:33, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Will do --Jarekt (talk) 13:34, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Multichill, I added support for main subject (P921) populating depicted people field. As with depicts, I only add an item if its instance of (P31) is one of: human (Q5), fictional character (Q95074), human whose existence is disputed (Q21070568), deity (Q178885), mythical character (Q4271324), Quranic character (Q18563360), human biblical figure (Q20643955), angel (Q235113), archangel (Q178342), fallen angel (Q581450), Hindu deity (Q979507), Greek deity (Q22989102), Roman deity (Q11688446), Norse deity (Q16513881). That list can be expanded if needed. As for religious content like Annunciation (Q154326) I could probably add a field like "depicted event" to display them. --Jarekt (talk) 17:34, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

Place of creation can use Wikidata too

@Jarekt: I noticed File:Van gogh flowers in a blue vase jh add20.jpg isn't showing the place of creation although Flowers in a Blue Vase (Q28146901) has both location of creation (P1071) and country of origin (P495). Could you update the template to use location of creation (P1071) and in case that isn't set, fallback to country of origin (P495) (or show it like Paris (France))? Would be a nice improvement. Multichill (talk) 14:38, 31 January 2021 (UTC)

Will do --Jarekt (talk) 13:34, 1 February 2021 (UTC)
Multichill ✓ Done I added place of creation based on location of creation (P1071) or country of origin (P495) and I added religious/artistic theme to "description". --Jarekt (talk) 04:47, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

time period (P2348) is causing issues

On File:Francisco de Goya, Saturno devorando a su hijo (1819-1823).jpg I currently get "Lua error in Module:Artwork at line 1016: attempt to concatenate local 'spanText' (a function value)." That's this line which does something with time period. We barely use that property so probably went unnoticed because of that. @Jarekt: can you have a look? Multichill (talk) 19:02, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

Ok, That is priority. I am trying to keep number of files in Category:Pages with script errors at zero. --Jarekt (talk) 22:32, 15 February 2021 (UTC)

"Series title"

part of the series (P179) is shown in a field whose header is "Series title" in English, which sounds a bit strange, and "collection" in French, with is plain wrong (example). It seems that the text is actually a translatewiki message that was originally intended for book series. We may need to create a new translatewiki message for this template. --Zolo (talk) 13:49, 14 March 2021 (UTC)

parameter for alt-texts

I would add an input line for the en:alt attribute, that visual impaired people can also get a feeling of artwork. So it is also possible to use a screen-reader. Regards, Conny (talk) 07:20, 23 May 2021 (UTC).

dpi for prints?

Maybe an improved version of the calculations available at Commons:Village_pump#determine_available_image_resolution_(for_a_list_of_paintings) could be displayed. --- Jura1 (talk) 18:33, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Jura1, dpi can be easily calculated but I am not sure what to do with this info. Many paintings have several dozen files and if one is low resolution the next one can be very high. We could calculate resolution of images used as image (P18), and add category for images below some threshold. But I am not sure if anybody would be interested in fixing files in this maintenance category. --Jarekt (talk) 04:47, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

images on template for paintings

with framewith color correction chartbacksideartist's signature

Wikidata has a few properties other than image (P18) relevant for paintings:

The first one is getting fairly common, the last one obviously somewhat rare. Currently only d:Q104373626 has three.

If available, it could be interesting to display icons or reduced versions in this template. Maybe like in the sample on the right side. --- Jura1 (talk) 12:37, 18 November 2021 (UTC)

Edited the above to include P10093. --- Jura1 (talk) 09:38, 25 November 2021 (UTC)
Jura1, I didn't remember this section here (sorry!) and asked again. It is now implemented, cf. talk here. Best, --Marsupium (talk) 08:52, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Google Art Project

We have a lot of high quality images from Google Art Project that use a custommised version of this template {{Google Art Project}}. It is rather complicated with loads of additional paramaters that make them confusing to edit. I think they could switch to a standard {{Artwork}} template. --Zolo (talk) 17:05, 23 December 2021 (UTC)

@Zolo: it's just a wrapper around {{Artwork}}. Just move the data to the linked Wikidata object and empty out the redundant wikitext. Multichill (talk) 15:45, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
@Multichill: I agree with the idea but the template use many (undocumented) parameters, an that requires quite a bit of processing. There are about 20k files so it to be done by a bot, and I don't feel comfortable with trying it myself at the moment.
As far as I can tell, what need to be done is:
  • move as much of the data as possible to Wikidata
  • switch to a standard {{Artwork}} with a link to Wikidata and use standard parameters for useful data that cannot be exported to Wikidata. Remove useless info. Set the source to |source = {{From Google Art Project|<value of the "special:url_id" parameter>|value of the "zoom" parameter }. -Zolo (talk) 18:31, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
@Zolo: you can do even better than that. Multichill (talk) 20:16, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
@Multichill: thanks apparently I had not followed developments aroudn structured data closely enough. -Zolo (talk) 20:36, 28 December 2021 (UTC)
It's hard to keep up! It's much easier to upload new files with the right metadata than to try to clean up these old uploads. I generally just try to hook them up with the right Wikidata item and move to the next file. Multichill (talk) 20:41, 28 December 2021 (UTC)

Louvre links

As the old "atlas" database is no longer online, Atlas ID (P1212) has been replaced by Louvre Museum ARK ID (P9394) in Module:Authority control. The same should be done in the reference field {{Artwork}}.

There is also something odd in the current at the moment in the authority control field of {{Artwork}}. When the Wikidata item has both Atlas ID (P1212) and Louvre Museum ARK ID (P9394), both are shown (here). When there is only Louvre Museum ARK ID (P9394), nothing is shown (here). --Zolo (talk) 09:46, 24 December 2021 (UTC)

Zolo, I can not reproduce the oddities. For me the first file does not have Atlas ID (P1212) and the second file don't have any identifiers. I removed support for Atlas ID (P1212) from the {{Artwork}} references. --Jarekt (talk) 04:23, 12 January 2022 (UTC)

Exhibition history

Hi,

The parameter retakes the wikidata property exhibition history (P608), but could it also look up in Wikidata for the dates (begin and end) of the said exhibitions? See File:FR-631136102 MS 84.pdf for an example.

@Jarekt:

Cheers, VIGNERON en résidence (talk) 11:16, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

Similarly, for the property described by source (P1343) (described by source) for the references, could we call the template {{Cite Q}}? Cheers, VIGNERON en résidence (talk) 15:00, 22 November 2021 (UTC)
Support. Implementation should be straightforward. {{Temporary Exhibition}}'s |item= parameter feeds Q-IDs. --Marsupium (talk) 13:55, 31 December 2021 (UTC)
VIGNERON en résidence, this is now implemented by using the not state of the art but apparently working Module:Temporary exhibition. Best, --Marsupium (talk) 12:54, 12 January 2022 (UTC)
Jarekt, regarding your work to integrate functionality in Module:Wikidata art: Actually I think this is a good example of break off chunks […] and put them in other modules[1]. I like the editAtWikidata icon integration you've added. But {{Temporary Exhibition}} would also profit from it?
PS: Thanks for filtering GLAMs as values (actually I think they are a property misuse, cf. discussion, but whatsoever exist). Marsupium (talk) 08:24, 14 January 2022 (UTC)
Marsupium, I will tinker with Module:Wikidata_art get_exhibition_history a bit more and find some more test cases. I agree that P608 is a bit confusing since it is used for both institution items and for exhibit items, but on the other hand I do not think we need 2 separate properties for those 2 cases. I just hope there is no other way this property is used, as it could break things. It needs more testing. --Jarekt (talk) 03:54, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
I think institutions as value are an abuse of exhibition history (P608). They belong to location (P276) and collection (P195) respectively with appropriate start time (P580)/end time (P582) etc. But this discussion is better located here at WD I think. Depending on its result decisions here can be made. Best, --Marsupium (talk) 17:36, 15 January 2022 (UTC)
