Saturday[edit]

We will be changing banners at around 5pm AEDT today. We have three new banners in Category:2010 Wikimedia Australia SLQ Fundraiser Banners to choose from (all by user:Bilby). I am liking File:StateLibQld 1 101584 banner.jpg. John Vandenberg (chat) 23:25, 17 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes is also my preferred one. The ship is slightly too small in the other ones I find. --Elekhh (talk) 01:53, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done The text ends up on top of the image at 1024x768, but it doesnt look too bad. John Vandenberg (chat) 06:38, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sunday[edit]

We need a new banner for this afternoon. John Vandenberg (chat) 22:32, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Christmas[edit]

Hoping to run a Christmas themed banner, I'm doing a special upload of Christmas images. John Vandenberg (chat) 23:13, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've set up a banner[1], but I'll wait another hour in case something better turns up for this evening. I'll look again tomorrow and run any better banner that appears overnight. John Vandenberg (chat) 07:57, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
That banner looks shocking in Opera, at any resolution. :/ John Vandenberg (chat) 08:24, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes indeed. I also had a try with this one. --Elekhh (talk) 21:45, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Years[edit]

There were only a few New Year's Day related images. John Vandenberg (chat) 02:18, 24 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

gallery[edit]

We should create a gallery of images, so we can direct readers to see the images. John Vandenberg (chat) 22:31, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Started one here. --Elekhh (talk) 00:06, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

twitter[edit]

This probably isn't work putting in the links section, but the twitter activity is looking good. John Vandenberg (chat) 01:28, 19 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Old and new[edit]

I don't know if these are useful or otherwise but ...

This partnership is a great result and is already starting to see great improvement in Queensland-related Wikipedia articles. -- Mattinbgn/talk 02:40, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pulling these together; I really like the Warwick Court House pics as they are from a similar angle. It would be great if we could have a banner which uses both old and new together. John Vandenberg (chat) 10:59, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some comments[edit]

Firstly, well done to all those who have made this possible. It is just wonderful to have these images available here on commons.

One point on categorisation: The uploader (a bot?) is tending to categorise in both the general category and the national category (i.e. Category:Verandas and Category:Verandas in Australia) One other point is that there seems to be a default categorisation of all images as "Queensland". This is not quite right, the Far North Coast of NSW has a fair representation as well. Also, there seems to be a default categorisation as "Black and White". There are one or two colour images about. Category:Architectural elements in Australia seems to me to be a tad overused, isn't this a meta-category?

Again, great job on this project, my nitpicking above aside. -- Mattinbgn/talk 04:16, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You may bring your input on categorisation on Commons:Bots/Requests/SLQbot where the upload process is discussed. Cheers, Jean-Fred (talk) 09:31, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The bot does not yet eliminate parent categories when a more refined(child) category has been provided in the Commons:State Library of Queensland/Subjects mapping. I'll do that soon.
The category Category:Architectural elements in Australia is being used because it appears in the subject mapping (somewhere).
There is no default categorisation for "Queensland". Can you point me to one or two images where it was incorrectly added?
There is a default categorisation for B&W photograph, as requested on the Bot request page.
John Vandenberg (chat) 10:49, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, my poor explanation has caused some confusion re:Queensland categorisation. I meant that the bot appears to be automatically categorising the files in the "Queensland" category space when many are actually Far North NSW or PNG. Looking at the bot request, it appears this is by design given that most images (90%+) are of Queensland. -- Mattinbgn/talk 21:20, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cricket[edit]

Hi.

I'm especially interested in cricket - and there must be plenty of cricket-related items. I'm not especially au-fait with Commons and I'm not techie. Is there a way to search within this Category for keywords in the description parameter? As well as adding those images to Wikipedia articles, I'd be happy to tag them with relevant Commons subcats. --Dweller (talk) 11:52, 31 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure, but here's a low-tech way to check what's been uploaded so far cricket-wise [3] Melburnian (talk) 03:12, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I have categorised the main set of Cricket subject headers into Category:Cricket in Australia and Category:Cricket teams of Australia, and have started a batch run of image which mention 'cricket' in the description. Enjoy, John Vandenberg (chat) 20:32, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Wow. Riches, sheer riches. I'm going to enjoy this, when I get some time to go into it. Thank you all, those involved and especially to the State Library, from a happy Pom. --Dweller (talk) 15:02, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How do I tag on File:StateLibQld_1_233108_Autographed_photograph_of_the_test_cricket_batsman,_Chapman,_1928.jpg that it's this chap? --Dweller (talk) 19:26, 3 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mattinbgn has done it. John Vandenberg (chat) 00:39, 9 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Floods[edit]

I've done a batch of flood related images, bringing the total to around 700 images. The categories are:

John Vandenberg (chat) 12:29, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is a draft article on enwiki the 1893 floods at en:User:Daniel/Sandbox/1893 Brisbane flood, -- Mattinbgn/talk 19:36, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nice find. I've asked Daniel if we can move it into mainspace and get it up to DYK level. John Vandenberg (chat) 20:33, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

politicians[edit]

I have completed a batch of politicians:

Older versions needing replacement[edit]

I just stumbled over File:American Army - Brisbane - 1941 102768b.jpg in Category:Images from the State Library of Queensland. That image is 150 × 112 pixels -- not even a half-decent stamp. The image was uploaded in 2008, but a higher resolution image can be found by searching for "102768" in http://www.pictureqld.slq.qld.gov.au/.

After I found that one, it wasn't hard to find another. I just looked for suspiciously small file sizes, such as File:Beenleigh Distillery ca. 1912.jpg which is only 14,173 bytes. Sure enough, you can find a better version by searching for "Beenleigh Distillery 1912" at the SQL site. It seems likely that there are others. Maybe this should be added to the section titled "Things you can help with". Rl (talk) 11:40, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rl, well spotted. Sometime this week I will be doing an audit of all images uploaded prior to the donation, automatically fixing any simple issues, and will publish the results, so we can more quickly address any more complex problems. I had hoped to do it in time for the first report, but some of that data took longer to compile than I expected. John Vandenberg (chat) 16:29, 6 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I note that there is now State Library of Queensland/Pre-collaboration uploads. Are there plans to replace these images with better versions from the library? Rl (talk) 12:10, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That list only includes images in the category uploaded before the collaboration. These images also need to be upgraded. I have this weekend allocated to doing this. John Vandenberg (chat) 13:43, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done All of the easy to find small images have been replaced with 1000px images, and categorised into Category:Images from the State Library of Queensland. Googling might identify a few more. John Vandenberg (chat) 12:39, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Report 2 completed[edit]

I've compiled the second report (Commons:State_Library_of_Queensland/Reports/2) with most of the same data as the first report (Commons:State_Library_of_Queensland/Reports/1). Are there any other useful stats that we could add? Thanks to everyone whose name appears in the report. Every edit helps Wikimedia and the library push for the other institutions to remove the 'for personal use' notices on public domain images. John Vandenberg (chat) 10:02, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

ships batch[edit]

The bot is running again, uploading all of the images of ships. See [4]. I've uploaded 50 so far, and upload do another 50 in half an hour. Commons:State Library of Queensland/Reports/2/Red categories lists a few few ship categories that need to be created. John Vandenberg (chat) 10:06, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are a lot of ships in this collection of images. Over 3,000 and plenty more to come. They are being categorised into Category:Ships in Queensland, however a very high percentage of them are not Ships in Queensland. We'll need to sub-categorise and re-categorise the ones we can. Should the rest be moved into a category for 'Ships in unknown location'? John Vandenberg (chat) 09:56, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Most of the ship images are uploaded, numbering nearly 5000. I've created a list of ship categories with image counts at Commons:State Library of Queensland/Reports/Ship categories. John Vandenberg (chat) 13:05, 9 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

camera direction[edit]

I think I have seen a template to describe the direction of the camera, as is being described textually here. Do we have something for that? John Vandenberg (chat) 10:26, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is {{Location}} with the heading option. Jean-Fred (talk) 13:38, 4 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Duplicate image[edit]

Not sure if this is the right place to bring it, but though here's a good starting point as it may need to be updated at SLQ as well as here. File:StateLibQld 1 85180 Brisbane (ship).jpg and File:StateLibQld 1 162623 Melbourne (ship).jpg depict exactly the same scene. However, the former identifies the Town class cruiser as HMAS Brisbane, while the latter identifies as HMAS Melbourne, another Town class ship of the Royal Australian Navy. I don't know enough to identify which ship is the one in the image. Does anyone know how to proceed from here? -- saberwyn 04:57, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Focusing on Women in April[edit]

The upload process will be focusing on women in April. To do this we need to find women's subjects, and I'll direct the bot to upload those images. John Vandenberg (chat) 05:51, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll start with the subject 'women's clothing & accessories', which is mapped to Category:Women's clothing of Australia John Vandenberg (chat) 05:54, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The bot has started now, with a small run of 50 images. John Vandenberg (chat) 11:10, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've reun the re-categorisation bot over Category:Women's clothing, moving the images to Category:Women's clothing of Australia. There are nearly 800 images in that Category, with many more to come.

Otter[edit]

Are the SLQ images in Category:Otter (ship) of the same ship as the more recent images? John Vandenberg (chat) 16:05, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Negative. I'm moving the SLQ photos to Category:HMQS Otter — Preceding unsigned comment added by Saberwyn (talk • contribs) 01:08, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! John Vandenberg (chat) 02:06, 2 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bot adding obsolete categories[edit]

I'm not sure why this is happening, but is not the first time the bot is adding obsolete categories like here. --ELEKHHT 21:13, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry about that. The bot's cache was lost during a rewrite of the software. I rebuilt the cache for the images of ships, and am now rebuilding it for the rest of the files. John Vandenberg (chat) 04:11, 7 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No worries at all, I am glad that the problem was as simple as that. --ELEKHHT 07:19, 8 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Post 1955 images - public domain status[edit]

Just a note for anyone who visits this page that I have started a deletion request about SLQ photographs marked as PD-Australia that were taken after 1 January 1955. This is not intended to be adversarial, SLQ staff have previously investigated the copyright status of other images and removed them from the batch. I will make a note on the deletion request not to close it until we have heard back from the SLQ staff. --99of9 (talk) 05:29, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Baldwin locomotives, class B14[edit]

Someone left a note on Commons:State_Library_of_Queensland/Subjects/L that there is no B14 class of Baldwin locomotives. I am removing the comment tonight, but will need to come back to this to help work out why these images have been given that subject. John Vandenberg (chat) 16:14, 18 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was an issue surrounding File:Ian Charlton.ogg which now seems resolved. The file has been undeleted and tagged with the relevant OTRS template. It's in establishment phase at English Wikisource and should be available for transcription soon enough.  — billinghurst sDrewth 01:27, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

New Zealand Ships masquerading as Australian ships[edit]

You have a very large number of images of our ships marked as Australian. I GUESS this has happened because someone has died and left you an enormous collection of images of (to an Australian) uncertain location and no more than a ship name for identity. The job just in Wikimedia is too big for me to fix. If the ship has a Maori name it is unlikely to be Australian (then it would be renamed something like Warrimoo instead of Waikikamukau).

Maybe we should just all be happy that you have those images and are preserving them and giving us access and leave it at that. Regards, Eddaido (talk) 11:54, 5 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
