It was proposed to have three rounds last year. What do you think? —Mono 22:17, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

It's a lot. I am not sure, if not at all opposed to this. -- Rillke(q?) 20:33, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
I don't oppose strongly... yet a proposal which fails to get seconding opinions could/should be dismissed. I suppose (as I stated at workshop page) we may have similar effects with a R1 midterm report in a sortable table that contains thumbnail, mid-term vote count, category of all the candidates - so that voters can sort and check the table to find which images are likely to be finalists and which are not. --miya (talk) 05:50, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
Like I said below, I'm against a 3 rounds POTY since I do sincerely believe is just creating more problems, since my only complain for everyone in HK when I talked about POTY was that the contest sounds like a beauty pagent where only the "pretiest" wins. I believe if we add yet another layer of votes where images will be analised like beauty pagents, the "wow" factor will win always over the quality. Béria L. Deciding dates

Old dates

When should the contest begin and end? I thought last year was OK:

R1

  • from 16 January 2013
  • until 30 January 2013

R2

  • from 7 February 2013
  • until 14 February 2013

if R3

  • from 25 February 2013
  • until 4 March 2013

What do you think? —Mono 22:17, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

I prefer "R1 midterm report" (around 23 January, if R1 will be on 16-30 January) - instead of R3. --miya (talk) 05:50, 3 January 2014 (UTC)
I'm against 3 rounds and think we should take in consideration the fact that last year people complained that the 2nd round was too close to the end of 1st. Maybe we should make 2nd round start one week later. Béria L. Rodríguez msg 02:54, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
I don't think it's realistic to start on the 16th, so I suggest we move toward the following schedule. What do you think? —Mono 20:56, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
R1
  • from 23 January 2013
  • until 6 February 2013

R2

  • from 17 February 2013
  • until 24 February 2013
I will certainly! work hard tomorrow and I would be happy with 16 January 2014. I am sorry that I wasn't around for a while now. I'll also try being available in IRC tomorrow. -- Rillke(q?) 22:36, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
How about setting nearly a week of beta testing? (the period all the votes which fullfill the qualifications will be eligible; with banner advertizing only on Commons)--miya (talk) 03:46, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
That sounds good to me. -- Rillke(q?) 08:57, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
I  Support those dates, since 16 is a bit over the clock already. Béria L. Rodríguez msg 14:27, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
User:Beria & User:Rillke, I'd like to propose a change to push R2 back even more to avoid conflict with the steward elections which run until Feb 27. That means we can use the CentralNotice without a conflict between steward elections (Wikimania banners are also scheduled during that time). R1 would begin on January 28 and end on the 10th, while R2 would begin Feb 27th and end March 6th. R1 could also be shortened to end on the 8th, eliminating all banner conflict. —Mono 21:59, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Although I don't like it much, if you think it's neccessary, there are no obligations from my side. -- Rillke(q?) 08:57, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Centralnotice would be unnecessary during the beta testing periods. According to meta:Stewards/Elections 2014 the steward voting will be held from 8 to 27 February 2014. It would be favorable to start R2 2 weeks after R1 closure. So how about the following schedule. --miya (talk) 13:18, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

R1
  • from 17 January (Friday) - Beta testing (Commons Sitenotice only)
  • from 24 January (Friday) 2014 - Full open
  • Until 7 February (Friday) 2014
R2

Last year was 75 edits across projects before Jan 1. I'd suggest lowering it to 50, but last year's was OK. What do you think? —Mono 22:10, 27 December 2013 (UTC)

Using banners

The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

We want to avoid banner blindness and maximize participation (this is one downside to three rounds). With each testing period, there will be no banners up. There are a few options for scheduling the banners (it's best to do this around WMF things, but usually they add banners at the last minute anyway).

  • Banners on throughout all rounds except for testing periods, shown to logged-in users on every page for ∞ times.
  • Banners on for specific days during all rounds, shown to logged-in users on every page for ∞ times.
  • Banners on throughout all rounds except for testing periods, shown to logged-in users 3 times. After that, the banners disappear until the last day (for another 2 times). This is technically feasible; they used this for the fundraiser this year.

What do you think? —Mono 19:52, 28 December 2013 (UTC)

As less annoyance as possible, please. I've completely blocked CentralNotice using an adblocker. -- Rillke(q?) 20:33, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
I'd suggest #3 for that, considering my personal feeling when the popup for a discussion on Meta appears for the 27th time. I'll ask a fundraising person how they did that with the cookies. —Mono 20:56, 28 December 2013 (UTC)
I would go with 3#, but with a watchlist notice runing all round. (Somenting simple and without formating, so we dont annoy people in Commons) Béria L. Rodríguez msg 02:56, 5 January 2014 (UTC)

The discussion above is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
✓ Done Option #3.Mono 21:03, 6 January 2014 (UTC)
The WMF cannot approve the cookie that makes this possible in time for our banners. Instead, banners will remain around 20-40% for most of the contest depending on participation. The first and last couple of days of each round will be 100%. —Mono 01:29, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
But we can put in some JS that prevents showing the banner if the user is obviously not eligible in the project they are currently visiting?
if (wgNoticeUserData.editcount < 75) {
   // don't show
}
or maybe there is even in option in the CentralNotice control panel. -- Rillke(q?) 06:05, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, that's a good idea. —Mono 17:29, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Set nominated FPs
Resolved

I restored set-nominated FPs to Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Galleries/Table (I don't know why they were removed from 2013 FP galleries, though).

Basically I chose the first file listed in the FP nomination pages. If the author would hope to change the coverd file, I would not oppose to it.--miya (talk) 17:55, 5 January 2014 (UTC) I added Naica (◆2013/12-38) and Pook's (◆2013/10-112). If there are other set-nominated FPs, please add them here.--miya (talk) 01:29, 8 January 2014 (UTC)

Might be my opinion only, but why not put all the pictures? After all, they are all FP's and that is the rule, all FP's of 2013 are candidates. Béria L. Rodríguez msg 14:26, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
Putting all the pictures is welcome to me (though 4 files in Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/Vatican City maps are quite similar). That will mean adding about 50 files in total more. Is it OK?--miya (talk) 16:11, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
Further, if we add 20 pictures in Commons:Featured picture candidates/Set/Puck of Pook's Hill, the votes will be scattered to all. So it will have an adverse effect to the author; I afraid. Jee 03:37, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
If I manage this in time, POTY-App can display each set as a stack, similar to what {{Image Stack}} does. -- Rillke(q?) 09:11, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
Wow! That is interesting. Jee 09:42, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
A very good news!--miya (talk) 00:18, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, miya, I added all of the cover files, hopefully. -- Rillke(q?) 21:08, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
I checked and found 11 files displayed in each galleries. Thank you, Rillke. --miya (talk) 06:04, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

How can we inform the voters that these are set-nominated FPs? --miya (talk) 14:33, 19 January 2014 (UTC)

They are now added to the galleries, (example) and they'll be hidden and displayed as "stack" (see above proposal) as soon as POTY App is able to deal with them. This will be either today or tomorrow. -- Rillke(q?) 12:40, 20 January 2014 (UTC)
Now all the images of 11 sets are on each galleries. Great!! thanks!--miya (talk) 13:01, 21 January 2014 (UTC)

Huge Galleries

We have two very huge Galleries: Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Gallery/Nature views (103) and Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Gallery/Constructions and buildings (88). Any idea whether/how to split them? -- Rillke(q?) 23:02, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

I don't have a strong opinion about "whether". But if it is necessary to split them, "Nature views" may be split to "waterscape" and "Landscape", and "Constructions and buildings", to "short-distance view" and "long-distance view".--miya (talk) 08:21, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
Checking the categorization

Please check the categorization at Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Candidates. Please note any mistakes. This page is automatically parsed by the new POTY LUA parser and changes to it will be reflected in all galleries accessible from Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Candidates. -- Rillke(q?) 22:46, 14 January 2014 (UTC)

File descriptions

Resolved

Continuing from the workshop, I would like for us to further evaluate the plausibility of implementing easily editable file descriptions. This behavior should be fairly simple to automate with the API (as per Rillke) and as a whole will hopefully help ensure that all candidates are represented fully and fairly.   — C M B J   07:17, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

Information are available on demand now; loading all from the beginning on is probably not a good solution. -- Rillke(q?) 17:05, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
I should've stopped to look first. The implementation now seems acceptable to me as an initial deployment.   — C M B J   14:03, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
CMBJ, if you find a candidate which says "File has no machine-readable description" (such as this or that as of now), please go to the file description page and add their information there (probably to "|description=" or "|commons_description=" line). Thanks.--miya (talk) 01:29, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

The current font for the banner must be either changed to a different font or some languages containing both, standard latin characters shiped with that font and special characters must be treated differently: Example of mixed font (in Firefox at least). -- Rillke(q?) 19:43, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

As soon as this is done, I am going to make font-loading faster. @Mono: , what do you think, what's your plan? -- Rillke(q?) 20:16, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

@Rillke: , More than anything, the font should be consistent within the language itself. For non-Latin languages, I'd suggest using an alternate font for the whole thing instead of certain letters. Also, the positioning of the font in English (the small 'eighth annual' letters) is a bit off in Chrome latest - it looks far better with just 'Picture of the Year' like in Spanish. —Mono 22:18, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
@Mono: Can you implement that? If you choose another font, I will care for installing it. -- Rillke(q?) 12:19, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

Menu overflow on small screens

Resolved

The tabbed menu is really nice but it doesn't scale very well; this is more an issue for translated versions but also for the English one on tablets, netbooks etc.; I'd prefer horizontal scrolling, if at all. @Mono: , will you care for that? -- Rillke(q?) 20:19, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Does that mean overflow: scroll for the banner itself? —Mono 22:14, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
@Mono: Or a solution that converts to 2 rows if horizontal space is insufficient. But the current vertical-scroll is non-intuitive, I think. -- Rillke(q?) 12:21, 16 January 2014 (UTC)
Horizontal scroll would be best then. The idea of tabs doesn't play well with responsive navigation (two rows is not at all intuitive). —Mono 20:50, 16 January 2014 (UTC)

dates

Resolved

Hello,
would it be possible to use the template {{date|}} (or something similar) for all the dates in the rules? At the moment, the dates remain in English in the translated texts, giving somewhat strange results...
Anna reg (talk) 10:51, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

I'll care for that, if no one else does before me, today. -- Rillke(q?) 13:51, 17 January 2014 (UTC)
All the dates should already be localized... —Mono 01:23, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

At least for me, they are not. When I look at the German header on the main page, I see Runde 1 endet am February 07, 2014., which sounds really strange to me, as the date is written in a form not used in German (plus the month isn't translated here - interestingly enough, February is translated in the header of other subpages). In the introduction it is even stranger, as the months are translated but date and month are in the wrong order, as it sais Die erste Runde beginnt am Januar 17, 2014 (00:00) und endet am Februar 07, 2014 (23:59) - correct would be Die erste Runde beginnt am 17. Januar 2014 (00:00) und endet am 7. Februar 2014 (23:59).
Another thing: the Voting is not currently in progress on the introduction page should be changed to The first round is open now or something similar. Anna reg (talk) 15:57, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Another little mistake

There are two pages: Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Galleries/es with two red links, and Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Gallery without the Lepidoptera, and Esculturas, Vitral e Inscripciones links. Maybe only one page is necessary, or maybe we need to update some links... What do you think about it? Jmvkrecords Intra Talk 17:33, 30 January 2014 (UTC).

The language subpages should not exist as the /Gallery-page is automatically translated dependent on the user's settings/preferences. I am going to delete them. Thanks for the pointer. -- Rillke(q?) 20:49, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
Thank you again. Jmvkrecords Intra Talk 21:31, 30 January 2014 (UTC).

Hello,
just wanted to tell you that there is a strange mistake concerning the control panel. My user language is German and when I click on the control panel, I get this page - to reach the control panel, I have to chose the English version - even though the site appearing then is translated to German... perhaps the first link should be changed?
best regards, Anna reg (talk) 23:10, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for reporting. FuzzyBot which is part of the translate extension sometimes "forgets" updating all language subpages. -- Rillke(q?) 11:40, 2 February 2014 (UTC)

‎Mistake in portuguese translation

I would like to report various errors on translation of categories in portuguese voting page. Is not Plantas e fungi, but Plantas e fungos. I would ask someone to fix here.

Some categories are in English. I'd like some Admistrator created the following pages: MediaWiki:Com-poty-cat-cities and bridges/pt (containing the correct translation Cidades e pontes), MediaWiki:Com-poty-cat-castles/pt (containing Castelos e fortificações) and MediaWiki:Com-poty-cat-religious buildings/pt (containing Edificações religiosas). The photographers bias

The POTY intro says:

"Picture of the Year 2013 is the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons.
"Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the past year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year."

"Photo competition"? Only photos? No, other images as well, isn't it? Then, please, change "photo" for "image" :-) --Dvdgmz (talk) 14:30, 7 February 2014 (UTC)

Done for I agree with you and there is no objection so far. Thanks.--miya (talk) 09:27, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Great! :-)--Dvdgmz (talk) 16:24, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Why on Earth is this page tagged not per the documentation and protected to prevent TAs without admin flag to fix it? --BaseSat (talk) 13:14, 25 January 2014 (UTC)

@BaseSat: Because it is a high-traffic page (in the near future / (redirect)) and because misleading information could mislead the voters in favour of a special candidate, for example. I don't have the time to examine what exactly is tagged not per the documentation so I would be glad if you could be a bit more specific. Thanks in advance. -- Rillke(q?) 15:42, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
It is loads easier to fix that than to explain. High-trafficness is a rubbish reason actually (sorry for quite rude opinion I don't mean to offend anybody)- e.g. on wikimania2014wiki there are pages linked from CN but there are no major problems with them. Headers' titles are tagged wrongly, there are a unnecessary tags and so on. --BaseSat (talk) 19:02, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
@BaseSat: I've reduced the protection level. Please make your edit, but try to minimize any formatting problems. All of the translation tags on that page are there for a purpose (I tagged the page myself) so please do check your work. Thanks, —Mono 19:51, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
+1 We sent out a lot of messages inviting users from all wikis and this is more or less the landing page, so please keep the time it looks broken as little as possible or don't break it at all. -- Rillke(q?) 20:07, 25 January 2014 (UTC)
Was this all you wanted to change? Please explain why these changes were necessary. -- Rillke(q?) 15:25, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
Half of I wanted to do was done by Mono - he retagged section headers. About my change - if you can provide any adequate reason why these tags shall remain there I would mostly like to hear it. --BaseSat (talk) 14:01, 29 January 2014 (UTC)

protected?

since when are the poty pages automatically protected? last time i checked, this was not an "admins-only" party. Lx 121 (talk) 09:43, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Don't know what you checked but you obviously didn't check carefully. Or is there a specific page you are referring to? I can remember POTY 2010 where some Spammers added their trash and I really want to avoid that this year. If you have a specific suggestion for improvement and you feel competent enough, please let us know. BTW, we are looking for new committee members because we are slowly but statically getting a smaller team. -- Rillke(q?) 11:53, 27 January 2014 (UTC)

Closing R1

Since I won't be available next week, someone has to close R1 on 2014-02-07 . 2 steps are necessary:

Thank you! -- Rillke(q?) 10:07, 31 January 2014 (UTC)

On 2014-02-07, 23:59 to be precise (mainly as a confirmation to myself).--miya (talk) 04:02, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
FYI I automated it so the state should change automagically when it is time. The blacklist is manual though. —Mono 04:24, 5 February 2014 (UTC)
I changed the state to afterR1, edited titleblacklist code. Sorry I did these more than 10 minutes later than 2014-02-07, 23:59 UTC. I wish these delays would not cause big harm. --miya (talk) 00:29, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
Thank you! No harm at all. There was even no one voting after 2014-02-07 23:59:59 UTC. -- Rillke(q?) 08:53, 10 February 2014 (UTC)

What is "FP" ?

Hello. I have a question and a request. Question: what is "FP"? Request: could you be explicit when using an acronym? Thank you. Gwalarn (talk) 12:44, 1 February 2014 (UTC)

@Gwalarn: FP means featured picture. Can you tell me which page says FP so I can fix it? —Mono 16:25, 1 February 2014 (UTC)
Adding a link to COM:FP from Introduction page may be preferable - like
featured on Commons (FP)
--miya (talk) 00:52, 3 February 2014 (UTC)
I added FP link to Introduction page.--miya (talk) 04:18, 11 February 2014 (UTC)

Raw wikicode visible

Module:POTY is returning the raw wikicode "{{Vote top}}" on the page Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Rules (between the heading "Categories" and the "Galleries by content"). This needs to be fixed. - dcljr (talk) 19:18, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
