How to contact a user that doesn't seem to have a talk page
Hello friends,
I want to contact user Jamieart Jnr. I understand that I would find the corresponding email address at the bottom left section of the talk page. But when I click on the user name, I'm taken to a page that says that this particular user doesn't have a talk page, so no email (or "email user" link) is shown. Hello BerbarEl. There is User talk:Jamieart Jnr where you can leave a message. What you saw was most likely the notice that this user does not have "user page" which is something else. I first move the category "Praia dos Pescadores" to "Praia dos Pescadores, Ericeira" (because there are at least 2 other beaches with the same name), but, by error, because thinking that this move was not done, I duplicate the move and create the category "Praia dos Pescadores (Ericeira)". I've tried to upload a jpeg but the image orients incorrectly in preview
Not overly experienced with image upload but have never had this occur. Uploaded one file with zero problems tonight; next file lays on its side in preview. Three times it occurred, once after a restart of the browser. Chose NOT to upload the file for now. Looked in help but couldn't find the answer. Should I just upload it and fix the orientation afterwards? Would this conversation be better informed if I'd already performed the upload? BusterD (talk) 02:41, 1 March 2022 (UTC)
upload regardless the orientation of the previews. after successful uploads, if they show up wrong on the file page, use {{Rotate}}.
i dont know exactly what's behind the preview etc. all i know is that some cameras have sensors and can detect and set an orientation, which might be recognised by commons.--RZuo (talk) 09:39, 1 March 2022 (UTC)

I have researched an ancient monument in Wales called Garn Goch for 5 years.
I have established a not for profit charity.
I have created a website and written a 150 page book.
I have the support of archaeological trusts.
I have produced a deeply researched and referenced summary specifically for Wikipedia.
Last year I amended the existing (and brief) Y Garn Goch page.
All my additions were unilaterally and totally removed.
In January I created a new page, Garn Goch, so as not to touch the existing page.
I uploaded the deeply researched and referenced summary specifically for Wikipedia.
It was unilaterally and totally removed.
This seems to me to be nothing but intellectual vandalism.
I do not know who is doing it, or why.
Nor do I know how to engage with whoever it is to discuss their issues.

wiki commons website wont load in browser
Good Day,
I am facing a unique issue. wiki commons website won't load on any of my browsers (brave, firefox, chrome, edge).
Wikipedia , wikimedia etc open and work properly, but wiki commons won't open.
The only way I can access wiki commons is by going to wiki media and then clicking on wiki commons.
clicking on an image from Wikipedia will not open wiki commons.
the browser says connection to wiki commons is not secure. I am at a total loss here as to how to resolve this issue.

Hello, I have unfortunately messed up trying to upload a new image to a Wikipedia article. I followed the instructions on the uploader and it said a file already exists with that name and to replace it if I wanted. As I was trying to upload a photo of someone to replace the current one on the Wikipedia article, I assumed doing that was fine, and edited the file details to match.
However the photo, although of the same person, is a different photo to the original and so I realised I probably should have uploaded that as a separate file. So I've undone all those changes now.
I'm now (hopefully) correctly trying to upload it as a new file which I will reference on the article, however the uploader is saying:
Unknown warning: "duplicateversions"
Can anyone advise how I can properly upload this file please?

Hi Folks,
Is it possible to rename this image. I had real trouble finding it last night. Perhaps rename to Microscope given to Lord Lister in 1849 by his father Joseph Jackson Lister. Perhaps move the Wellcome L0057966 into descriptive text. A lot of the image associated with Lister don't seem to visible on a search for Joseph Lister or Lord Lister. That is problem because there is a many associated with him that need to go into the article. For example the image of a syringe that is used in The art of medicine Joseph Lister’s domestic science at [1] is not visible. That is probably a Welcome image and it must be on here somewhere as it was core to his discoveries. I can't find it. So I think a wholesale reordering is needed.

It's a scene from the movie itself. It certainly can't be on Commons (we don't allow images here on a "fair use" basis at all), but might be allowed on the English-language Wikipedia (you would upload locally to an image page there and use a non-free use rationale on the image page). Take a look at en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. It's a bit complicated, but if you want to do something like this, you'll need to understand policy in that area. - Jmabel ! talk02:46, 2 March 2022 (UTC)

I wanted to upload two files to commons that will contribute to a Wikipedia page I made, namely this one and this one. In the sidebar of both links, the following is written:
Copyright details * Please note. You may download this photo for private use. This does not mean that the copyright has expired. If you use this photo in a publication, in writing, on the Internet or otherwise, you bear the responsibility for the consequences. After all, a copyright holder may still come forward.
The thing is, according to article 37 of the Dutch Copyright act, the pictures would be public domain if no one would claim it after 70 years. So this would not be an issue right?
Then to my second problem: if I would upload them, do I have to follow additional (internal) rules? For example, do I have to specify where I got it from, do I have to name the file a certain way? And I assume I can use the {{PD-US-expired}} license since it's public domain in my country and before 1927? I don't want to upload these pictures if it would not be allowed so I want to be extra careful with that.

URGENT: Shane Warne photo needs reversion to earlier image.
Australian Cricketer Shane Warne died today, and in consequence his Wikipedia biography is attracting considerable attention. Unfortunately, someone has today updated File:Shane Warne February 2015.jpg [3] in a manner which alters the image aspect ratio, and in consequence the shape of Warne's head. While I'm in no doubt the edit was well intentioned, it clearly needs reverting as a matter of urgency, before this misleading image propagates further. I'd attemplt the revert myself, but am unsure how to do this, and don't want to mess things up further. AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:53, 4 March 2022 (UTC)
Having attempted to revert this myself, I've now come to the conclusion that the aspect ratio was correct all along, at least with the file as shown on Commons, and restored it to Stemoc's latest version. I suspect there may have been some sort of cache issue somewhere, making it look odd on browsers. It was definitely wrong at one point on Wikipedia, as I wasn't the only person to see the problem. Too wide. Didn't get a screenshot. I suspect it was a mismatch due to the cropping being changed between versions, resulting in the image from one version being stretched to fit the shape of the other. Has to be a bug somewhere. AndyTheGrump (talk) 22:45, 4 March 2022 (UTC)

Was that for a specific user? If so, I'd actually ask in his personal talk page. Anyway, I'm afraid even then it's not something to be discussed on Commons. If I lost my school results, I would ask my mum, or try contacting the school. But in my case the school would have destroyed them decades ago, being pre-digital paper era. ;) Because of privacy reasons, they wouldn't be using Commons as a repository. Pelagic (talk) 09:04, 5 March 2022 (UTC)
Username/account problem
For some reason lost to me now, I seem to have a different username for Wikimedia Commons (Picadder) from the one I use across all Wikipedias (mainly the English one, but have made a few edits on others), i.e. Laterthanyouthink. When I tried to sign up for the Wikipedia Library and elected to log in, it logs me in as Picadder and rejects me because of fewer than 500 edits here. I have made over 51,000 edits on Wikipedia. Ah, thanks, Jeff G.. I have now got to the bottom of the problem, and hope it can be sorted out. It turns out that Picadder is attached to one email address, and I do in fact have an account as Laterthanyouthink on Wikimedia as well, under the email address that I use for all of my other Wikipedia stuff. I don't know how I did this, but what do you (or anyone else reading this) suggest that I do? Can I inactivate the Picadder one so that this confusion does not arise again? (My various password-storing apps must have saved Picadder at some point and I was just using whatever popped up at the time... so will have to ensure that they save the other one for future use.) The advanced search on Flickr allows you to limit licenses in the search. Choose "commercial use and mods allowed" (the default there is "any license")
May sites are similar in one or another respect, but I don't think any other general-use site has a comparable number of images that are likely to be useful to Commons. Someone else might be able to suggest one.
Typically, you should be able to search on commons for the numeric id from Flickr. That won't be a 100% foolproof approach, but should work pretty well. If you upload with Flickr2Commons, that should typically be able to determine whether the image has already been uploaded and link to where it already is.
I'm afraid you need to ask English Wikipedia about English Wikipedia. If the images are free-licensed, though, they should typically end up on Commons, not en-wiki.
Can I upload a photo that I took of an ancient symbol?
The symbol was printed on a piece of paper by someone else.
Doing a google image search, the symbol looks like a kamana yantra.

@Atom Miner: the problem is that in all likelihood any particular drawing of a symbol like that would be complex enough (and involve enough choices) to merit copyright. So copyright would belong to the person who drew it (and snapping a photo of an artwork either creates no copyright at all for you, or creates one only as a derivative work). @Dr Salvus: You should edit the file description to make it correct. That would at least entail changing the author (probably to {{Anonymous}}) and the source, and replacing the {{Self}} template with {{Cc-zero}} and {{subst:PP}}. Hi @Dr Salvus. You could assist your friend to create a one-off pseudonymous account. Email address isn't required if they never want to recover the password. Logs for IP address etc. are only retained for 30 days AFAIK. There is Category:Erotic activities involving children. That contains mostly late C18 to early C20 book illustrations (engravings), with a couple of oriental artworks and Grecian / Graeco-Roman artefacts. There is a subcat for Japanese-style lolicon drawings. No evidence for exploitation of currently or recently living persons in the production of the images. Pelagic (talk) 19:01, 7 March 2022 (UTC)

I was unable to access my old account and needed to make a new one in order to upload a new image to a page. During this process the placement of the image has been placed incorrectly on the page, but due to my account being deemed 'too new' I am not able to resolve and fix this matter. @CICMarketing: New accounts should be able to upload, unless something has changed recently. Are you using the Special:UploadWizard? Hi! In the file description, there are a number of different colors. These colors are also present in the SVG original. However, the PNGs generated are lacking all colors except for grey-green, e.g. this one. Is this a bug in MediaWiki or one of the libraries that it is using? That seems like a bug, or the SVG is in an incorrect format. I'd mention this issue in discussion page of the file. I'll investigate it and try to validate the SVG once I get back home from work. A valid SVG shouldn't produce any render bugs. If I find the SVG not valid, I'll try to fix and clean the SVG code to make it valid, and upload a new version. @Tobias: So I guess there is something wrong with the file itself, not directly with the MediaWiki software. It's strange that it renders okay in direct browser SVG renderer, but MediaWiki fails to render it correctly. I've investigated a little bit and the issue was first produced by User:Виталий Болбас in his revision from 30th of October 2018. This revision attempted to reduce the size of the file, which was a success, but MediaWiki renderer then failed to produce an image and instead showed a blank canvas. Later revision fixed the blank canvas, but failed to return colours back. I don't know how the page looked like in 2018, maybe it is an issue of MediaWiki afterall, but it's strange that it works with the older revisions from 2013 (larger files) just fine. It must be something within the file that triggers a bug in the MediaWiki software. I don't have another explanation. Polda18 (discussion • contributions) 09:14, 8 March 2022 (UTC)
@MaitreyaVaruna: It's an automated bot, which means that it acts based on the information it can understand (which is slightly different to a human). Based on the reply above, it was because an unregistered editor incorrectly attempted to change the template format; you can see the edit, here. As a result, the bot couldn't detect that it was released as CC-BY-SA 4.0, even though any person could easily just see and read it, despite it displaying as plain text {{cc-by-sa-4.0|attribution=|migration=}}. — Bacon Noodles (talk • contribs • uploads) 01:15, 9 March 2022 (UTC)
Speedy deletion requests shortcut
Hi guys, I want to speedy delete a file name that has an error name but doesn't work. I tried the one that is similar at w:en:Wikipedia but it shows a red link (for example: {{db-g1}}). @SeanJ 2007: According to Wikidata, this template doesn't have its direct counterpart on Commons. There are however templates for file deletion, just search. One quick sweep of Wikidata revealed {{Speedydelete}}, which is related to the Wikipedia's {{db}}. So the more specific template for speedy deletion doesn't exist on Commons as it seems. This template seems to be also for file deletion as you wish, so I'd stick with that template. Otherwise, use the search to find the template you need. @Supercheap auto: I guess you mean this file, right? I'm not sure how much the logo has changed and how the treshold for change is set so the new logo has to be uploaded as a separate file instead of a new revision. I guess if the change is ever so slightly subtle, you may upload the SVG of the new logo as a new revision of the existing original file. If the logo has changed so it looks completely different, I'd suggest uploading it as a new file, and give it a new name (so let's say the year in which the logo has changed), make sure the name of the file explains what's different. Also, in both cases, it should be noted that threshold of originality should be met, because I think the official original logo is copyrighted, which is not suitable for Commons. Threshhold of originality means you can upload a simplified SVG version of the file given that it doesn't resemble the original logo too much. This is a risk because naturally people have their own threshold of originality and it's very hard to assume whether the simplified logo is simplified enough to be considered below the threshold so it doesn't induce copyright infridgement, so the file might be a subject for removal as the community might come to an agreement that the file doesn't meet the threshold of originality requirements, but in all cases, you should be able to upload a lower resolution version of the original logo to English Wikipedia under Fair Use (which is not applicable on Commons). Not all Wikipedias make use of Fair Use, so bear that in mind. That's also the reason why Fair Use material cannot be uploaded to Commons, because everything uploaded here is accessible in all wikis, and Fair Use isn't applicable in many countries which have their own Wikipedia, which would make a contradiction about using all resources on Commons. The only exception to copyrighted material not being allowed on Commons are official logos of Wikimedia Foundation projects (such as Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, etc.), they are of course hosted on Commons to be accessible from all wikis. So I visited the websites of Supercheap Auto and it seems like the logo didn't change all that much, it was just simplified. However, I'm quite afraid that uploading the new version would induce copyright infridgement as there's no way to further simplify the new logo, so you'll have to upload it to English Wikipedia under Fair Use instead I guess. All other wikis will use the older logo, sadly. Or alternatively discuss this with your employer, they'll probably redirect you to the legal team of Supercheap Auto, and you can discuss this matter with them. I'm not going to address this issue in the file discussion yet, I just want to make sure you know what you are doing. The logo is a subject for copyright and while it may not be suitable for Commons, you still may upload it to English Wikipedia under Fair Use. @DaigoroLiam: Hello. I'm afraid the film you took this file from is still copyrighted and non-free. This British documentary was made by Paul Rotha who died in 1984, so his works are still copyrighted until 2054. How to add logo of a company?

I am trying to add the logo of Dream Games with the logo from their website but I am not sure if it will be removed from the page again. Logos of companies are often subject for copyright. Legitimate reason to use it on Wikipedia might be Fair Use, but that's not applicable to Commons. You may upload the logo to English Wikipedia under Fair Use, but cannot be uploaded to Commons. One way to get a logo on Commons is meeting the Commons:Threshold of originality requirements. @Jmabel: To be honest, Threshold of originality is a little bit complicated matter. It all depends on where the logo is originating and/or where the uploader is originating. For example, Czech Republic, where I am from, does not have something that utilizes the Threshold of originality in our laws. I'm not sure whether as Czech Republic's citizen I am allowed to upload a logo of an abroad company originating from a country that does utilize the Threshold of originality, or I'm still obliged to not upload anything that violates laws in my country even the logo in question is for a company that originates from let's say United States where Threshold of originality does take place. I certainly cannot upload a logo of a company residing in Czech Republic if the logo in question is copyrighted. No Threshold of originality takes place there for Czech Republic, so it's a little bit tougher for Czech Wikipedians writing articles about Czech companies as Czech Wikipedia doesn't even allow Fair Use and all files that are used on these sites must come from Commons, which doesn't allow Fair Use material eighter. One prime example would be Avast Software, which is in fact originally a Czech antivirus developer company (originally called Alwil Software, which actually started out writing MS-DOS malware) I'm no lawyer, and vast majority of users on this site are in similar position, so it's always good to ask someone for legal advice. Now that Avast is owned by Norton (U.S. company), those restrictions may not apply now, and there is actually a current logo on Commons, but I don't think you'll find older logos on Commons prior to the company stocks being sold to Norton, and that's because Czech Republic doesn't have any law that would utilize the Threshold of originality. But I'm no lawyer and I'm sure vast majority of users here are in similar position, so it's always good to ask someone for a legal advice. I am a Wikipedia editor with almost no concept of Wikimedia commons, other than as a store of items used on WMF sites. I want to incorporate source data for an existing commons image that's used on Wikipedia, so that the actual source of the image (in the Detroit Public Library Digital Collection) will be documented and verifiable. Here are the details:

@Graptaloyia: If you uploaded it recently (within a week) and it is not in use, you can just mark it with "{{subst:My bad upload}}" and it will be deleted.

@Dr Salvus: First of all, are those photos your own work? If so, what camera did you use that the image ended up with a watermark? I know some cellphone models do actually stamp the photos with a watermark of the cellphone make, I'm not quite sure where to disable that feature or if it even can be disabled (personally, I hate that). So I guess that is what you want to remove? But if you tell the cellphone model or your camera model, we could find a way to disable watermark stamp on that camera. If it's a date&time watermark stamp, most camera makes should have an option to disable it. If the photo isn't your own work and you downloaded it from somewhere on the Internet (hence the watermark probably showing copyright status), I'm afraid that Commons cannot accept that photo for legal reasons. I don't think quality is a major reason for a file deletion if you mean that. Files could be deleted for copyright violations, etc. I don't think that these images are copyright protected. They may be eighter below the TOO or his own photos. Quality isn't necessarily a major decision criteria for file deletion or to be replaced. Everything depends on the context. @QuickQuokka: Well, I didn't look up every single file he uploaded. Partly because I wasn't really that interested, and mainly because I hardly have time to look up one's entire upload history. But as I said, even if there are better images to be used in Wikipedia or Wikivoyage articles for example, lower quality images can still make for a valuable contribution to the gallery here on Commons. In fact, categories kind of work like automatic galleries. If there isn't really a serious reason to delete the file or to get it replaced by another, then let it be. That person bullies you. Claiming that categorizing files isn't such a waste of resources will never convince that person because it's just an argument to bully you. If there is a whole group of people and they keep bullying you, I'd consider reporting them for harrasment. Some people do really nasty stuff out of jealousy or simply hatred. They're dead convinced that categorising is a waste of time and waste of whatnot. As said, you won't convince them otherwise, linking to a relevant page won't change their behaviour, so the only thing you can do right now is do what you do and just ignore them, and if they don't stop, report them for harrasment. Yes, he came to me for those who complained so he was completely not interested in my explanation. I'll just give a random example. For example, they complained that I was over-categorizing because these categories I created were so unnecessary in their eyes. To give another example, image grabed from facebook or government website, no evidence of permission for its upload under a free licence, so I nominated to deletion and then they started to get extremely unpleasant about my abusing the DR process. @Kai3952: Well, I have no idea on how long this is taking. But if you feel that this is going too long or too far, just report them for harrasment, I'm sure something is going to be done about that. The Universal Code of Conduct (UCOC) is of course in effect, and there are new official enforcement guidelines being voted on to be ratified. Those global enforcement guidelines are essentially to kind of unify the way the enforcement works on each project, to connect the projects even more. One of the key bullet points is of course section about threats, bullying and harrasment. So essentially they keep bullying you, disregarding your work regardless of your arguments. Unfortunately, my account on Chinese-language Wikipedia has been blocked by the Taiwanese admin. He thinks that it is necessary to stop my behavior, like continued arguing without accepting any responsibility for what I did myself. Not only that, he also has believed that my explanation is very threatening and intimidating to Taiwanese users. However, it is what someone believes or thinks, and is not necessarily the truth. Most of Taiwanese who have edited files are active on Chinese-language Wikipedia than Wikimedia Commons (which of course also contains the admin who blocked me) so I can understand why they misunderstand our policies and categorizing files. If I report to the UCoC, I'm afraid they will trust the admin, and then the result is "global blocked" by them. Taiwanese users do in fact think differently from the way our did, since Wikipedia Commons consists of files, we are very different from Chinese-language Wikipedia in many ways, I'm guessing that's probably the case. I am currently starting my fifth year on Wikipedia Commons where I am proud to have taken part in the most important and high value tasks. Not only can I correctly categorizing files, but also I can create new categories to help propel the categorization tasks forward. However, I'm not good at dealing with relationships between people, not to mention disputes between editors (personal conflict). Whilst what I'm doing now is good for Wikipedia, relatively speaking, my ignorance is a provocation in their eyes. If you're right, it might mean that they attempt to "overturn" our consensus for categorizing files. Because I know from their complaints what they considered to be the meaning and usage for categorizing files:
When the number of files is not enough to create categories for them. For example, it makes no sense to create categories for those extremely less number of files.
When existing categories are sufficient for current needs and enough to distinguish the difference between each file. For example, it makes no sense to create intermediate categories that hinder their convenience in use.

YouTube clip channel has a CC license, but not the original source
Assume you're on YouTube. You take a screenshot from a "clip channel" of a podcast ([4]), which has a CC license, and upload it to Commons. Later, another editor shows up and points out that while it is true that the "clip channel" has a CC license, the original video [5] from where it is clipped from does not - and since the clip is a derivative work of the original video, the CC license is invalid. Both the clip channel and the original full-length video are presumed to belong to the same owner. Is there precedent for dealing with these cases, where the CC licenses don't match? It all depends on the file license. Is the file you've uploaded your own work? That means you are the author of the work in that file? If so, are you uploading the file with license compatible with Commons? Commons has two licenses that are compatible: Creative Commons and Public Domain. Creative Commons is the most used one as it releases the work for free, yet it still ensures some form of authorship protection. Public Domain is basically without any kind of license, you're essentially giving your authorship up. If the file isn't your own, then you have to know the license under which the file is uploaded. First of all, Commons doesn't allow uploading of a Fair Use content. That is possible only under certain language projects, such as English Wikipedia. Some countries don't utilize Fair Use, so be careful. If the license is compaible with Commons, you can upload it here or ask for importing from the project. Also note that there is something called Threshold of originality (TOO). That basically means you can upload let's say a logo that is deemed to be too simple for copyright protection. Each country has different TOO criteria, however. If I missed something, or misunderstood, then my apologize. I don't speak Greek, so I had to use an automatic translator to translate it to English. I also translated this reply from English to Greek with DeepL. It's not perfect.

Oh, and another fair warning. Even if you took a photo of let's say an artwork, you're the author of the photo, but you still may not upload the photo to Commons if the artwork in the photo is still copyrighted. That is the case with many Andy Warhol's pictures for example, which are valuable and photos of these pictures would be great to be hosted on Commons, but they're still copyright protected. That's a fair warning to note. Copyright is sadly something that ties hands for free sharing. For the first question, if AI generated work would subject to copyright would depend on details, same as non-AI generated. As software is copyrightable, I presume copyright could be asserted by the designers/owners of the AI program of whatever subsequent works it might produce. The US Copyright Office recently rejected a work as being AI created and thus not being subject to copyright. Most of the commentators, however, were of the opinion the fact that the user was pushing the "independently created by AI" angle was key; that if he'd been really interested in copyright and put the emphasis on his creative influence, he would have got a copyright. Something like Google Translate is pretty clearly copyright free, but if there's a human in loop, pushing the AI in directions to create the work they want, using the program as a tool, copyright seems much more probable. Basically, I think the set of copyright-free AI works is going to be pretty rare or uninteresting; most things of interest are going to be stuff like Google Translate or Photoshop filters, where they take something creative and transform it.--Prosfilaes (talk) 00:01, 15 March 2022 (UTC)

"Fair use" is a legal justification to use certain copyrighted material without explicitly licensing it, not relevant for something this old, and in any case not accepted on Commons.) I have been in touch with the estate of the artist Nate Dunn https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nate_Dunn and we both want to upload photos of Nate Dunn's artwork on to his Wikipedia page. The estate is willing to authorize me to do this for them in writing but we are unsure how best to do it. Hello, I noticed that there are many public domain files at catalog.archives.gov that are not on Commons (I just uploaded this one manually, but manual uploads are a pain). I know there have been mass imports from US national archives in the past, can we reactivate whatever bot did that? Or is there some other way to easily import files from that website? According to the map, it seems that the green blob on Western Africa doesn't belong to Morocco, but rather Senegal and part of Mauritania. While Mauritania was claimed in late 19th century according to Wikipedia, Senegal was part of French empire since 17th century when France began to trade with slaves. It is possible that French empire was slowly spreading to north in early 19th century as well and part of Mauritania was already claimed in 1812. I don't see Morocco being part of French empire on that map.

@Hnsjrgnweis: Make sure to contact the president of the organization and tell them about COM:OTRS. Commons cannot trust such claims that "they gave me permission". It has to be officially signed and sent to the Wikimedia Foundation, otherwise anyone could claim they've got permission, while in reality they stole it. Believe me, you don't want to get through legal obligations regarding copyright. It has to be officially approved by the organization in writing, officially signed and sent to Wikimedia Foundation for approval review. Otherwise even if your claim is true, before it is officially in writing, nobody will believe it.
Also, the logo seems to be fairly simple. Take a look at COM:TOO#Germany to learn more about Threshold of originality in Germany. I can't asses whether this logo falls below the TOO in Germany (those laws will subsequently apply in this case). I'm afraid someone else will have to look at it and decide, preferably a lawyer specialized in copyright protection. Otherwise, an OTRS letter from the organization to WMF in order for it to be used. I need to upload two batches of about 100 files each. The easiest approach I've seen so far is to add them 50 at a time to the upload wizard and then manually write in all of the names/captions/descriptions, but this would be pretty time consuming and error prone. It would be nice if I could use like, an excel with a list of file names, captions and descriptions. I've read https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Guide_to_batch_uploading but frankly it's not that helpful. I tried the Pattypan and ComeOn! tools but they didn't work/gave errors when I tried to run them. I also tried pywikibot but it also gave errors. @Lallint: If you want to see details for individual files, turn on "Show details". If the problem is that you only want your own creations, that's a little trickier since GLAMorous doesn't have a general way to check authorship. SVG file translated via SVG Translator has a language selector, but doesn't work on the labels inside the image

So the archive bot happened to archive the unanswered question of mine, which I would like to revive and get answered, please.
I've updated an existing SVG image (shown on right) by adding 3 languages in it - Czech, German, and English, while German is also an implicit language (the original used in the picture). What's strange is that the picture shows English language instead of the implicit one (which is German), and now that I used the {{Mld}} template in te file description, it does display language selection dropdown menu box, but it doesn't change the labels inside the image. Link from a translated thumbnail doesn't display the selected language in the image, eighter (it does however collapse other languages than selected in the description). @Polda18: By Wikipedia, multilanguage can only be recognized with the restriction that the language switch is not "too far behind". In your file, the switch is defined more than 3 MB after the code start - that is known a non-working condition.
A workaround might be to have a transparent background for the embedded raster image, and define the text advancing the image.
I made a rather cheap workaround: the languages are defined additionally before the large image, just dummylike as empty statements. This way it works -- sarang♥사랑09:05, 19 March 2022 (UTC)
@Sarang: Oh my god, thank you. I didn't even realize that there was a limit to where the language selector first appears in order to be working. Seems like the SVG Translator tool is fairly straightforward and doesn't check for this condition to make it working for bigger files. I guess the biggest issue is the photo used as a background, which naturally contains a lot of data. I guess the photo could be a lower resolution picture, not a full resolution 12MPx photo as it seems. Really, the photo takes up vast majority of the file size. Anyway, it's good that all it takes is an empty dummy switch with all the defined languages and the functionality is restored. @Mikalagrand: According to the file license tag, it seems like Flick from where this is taken contains a note about the copyright, which says that there are no known restrictions for this artwork. One reason could be that the artwork itself isn't actually copyrighted so it would be restricted, or the copyright is restricted, but not actually actively enforced. From the description I gather the image is a black and white photo of Moon Vessel (dated 1945). So, the image is certainly not of a portait of Abraham Lincoln. Jackson Pollock died in 1956, which is "only" 66 years ago. The picture on the linked page you sent me states a copyright notice:
Recordings that were published prior to 1923 entered the public domain on January 1, 2022. Recordings that were published from 1947 through 1956 are copyrighted for a period of 110 years after first publication. Although, this applies specifically for music. I couldn't find any information here on Commons that would determine when paintings with copyright notice enter public domain. I would simply assume 70 years after the author's death, which will be frankly just 4 years later, which will be in 2026. If the same rules that apply for music also apply for any other work, then year of publication is 1945, so the copyright would expire in 2045.
I'm no lawyer, so I can only assume based on what I can read in online sources. I am also not a resident of United States, which also contributes to the fact I don't know about majority of U.S. laws, notably copyright laws. I know a little bit about Fair Use, but the rest of the copyright laws? Without researching anything, basically zero knowledge. BTW, interactive history browser may do the job for you, or simply go to the history summary page of said file and select range between the last vandalism and the last legitimate edit, then press "Revert", it should revert all the changes the vandal has done even between multiple edits. Unknown parameter removal via Flickr2Commons
I used the Flickr2Commons to transfer a number of public-domain images from the U.S. Army Cadet Command Flickr account. All of them have the prefix "U.S. Army Cadet Command Change of Command Ceremony", so for those helping to fix the problem, they should be under those filenames here. During the uploads of the Army images, an unknown parameter was added to the File Information template (Notification: Error in {{Information}<ǃ---(prevent template from appearing)-->} template: unknown parameter "1".). I searched the parameter in Edit mode but couldn't find the issue.
If someone can see it, could they assist in fixing the issue or help identify it to me? I don't see it.
P.S. Upon initial upload, the aforementioned error was already present; however, the Creative Commons 1.0. preset copyright tag was not acceptable as a public domain justification. Hence I substituted it with the PD-USGov-Military-Army copyright tag, which seems equally appropriate given that in the file metadata, the images were produced by the U.S. Army Cadet Command Public Affairs Office, under the U.S. Army. Michael Caruso musician photo - profile wikipedia picture
There is an editor/administrator coming after profiles that have been here for years. questioning and deleting photos etc. One of the photos on Tamara Champlin's biography may have been questionable credentials, but the photo on Michael Caruso (musicians) profile was uploaded by its photographer Luani Kologi who is the owner of "Fragments" handle.
On Danielle Nicole (musician) biography there is a problem with the Concord Records photo. Please look into this and any help you can give me I would appreciate.
Here is the reply I received: @Paulhus15: I didn't remove the photo. I only asked about it at c:COM:VPC#File:Michael Anthony Caruso.jpg. The photo was tagged for speedy deletion by another editor named c:User:Jeff G. (see c:User talk:Fragmentsforart#File:Michael Anthony Caruso.jpg) and then subsequently deleted by a Commons administrator named c:User:Túrelio. Once the file was deleted from Commons, it was removed by a bot from the Wikipedia article. If you feel an error was made, you can always post a message explaining why at c:User talk:Túrelio. For reference, though, the fact that a file has been used for a long time doesn't mean it's was uploaded under an acceptable or verifiable license; it could just as easily mean that no body bothered to check the file's licensing for a long time. The same image can essentially be seen used online as the cover art of a single by Caruso that was released at least two years prior to photo being uploaded to Commons, and almost always in such cases more formal verification is needed for such a file to be kept. So, if the photographer who took the photo had previously allowed it to be used for the cover art before they uploaded it to Commons, all they will likely need to do is follow the instructions given in c:COM:Licensing images: when do I contact VRT? and the file can be restored after VRT verification. The editor/administrator referred to by the OP in their first post above is me and the reply they're referring to can be found at en:User talk:Marchjuly#Michael Caruso musician photo. The other file they're referring to is a file uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content and thus has nothing to do with Commons. I'm not an administrator on English Wikipedia or Commons; so, I can't delete files. Since the OP has stated they've been editing for a long time and understand the various policies of both Commons and English Wikipedia, one would assume that understood that only administrators have the ability to delete files; if they didn't, now they do. A similar post to this was also asked at en:WP:HD#MIchael Caruso Musician photo where myself and some others responded. For the OP's future reference, issues with Commons files generally need to discussed and resolved on Commons, while issues with files uploaded locally to English WIkipedia generally need to be discussed and resolved there. There's a bit of overlapping between Commons and English Wikipedia, and lots of similarities between the two when it comes to policies related to file licensing; however, there are also some important differences which is why its best to typically discuss a file where it's been uploaded. -- Marchjuly (talk) 03:14, 21 March 2022 (UTC)

Donald Trung tried repeatedly to convince me that there is no problem with my uploaded photos, but I told him that my photos was reported by Beeblebrox for a HOST violation at COM:AN/U. It's taken a long time to explain why did I choose not to upload. Maybe I wasn't clear enough, I explain here again:
(1) Beeblebrox has not discussed with me before reporting my photos. He seems to intend for the admin to block me in order to stop uploading. As soon as I feel it's a threat, I will to do other than stick to my gut and keep moving forward.
(2) When I'm explaining to Beeblebrox how my photos be used for any educational purpose, it's actually aggravating a conflict. I felt if I tried to argue and explain the rationale behind each photo, then things would have gotten worse. In the past four years since I've already been blocked many times for the same behavior, I suppose I cannot argue with anyone. Not to mention the admin on Chinese-language Wikipedia has indefinitely blocked me. I'm afraid that the best (and maybe only) option in this case is to give up on defending myself. For me, that means stopping to upload any photos.
(3) Beeblebrox said: "This is Commons, not Google street view." It really hurts me that he seem to think that I am like "Google's street view tool". I never thought it would happen to me. When someone else uploads a photo they took, only I am being blamed, which indicates that there is something wrong with me. I could make myself do a lot of things on Commons, but I wouldn't make myself look like Google's street view tool. If his intention was to stop me from uploading, then he did.
However, Donald Trung said: "I don't think that your uploads will get you blocked if you do some basic evaluations to keep the near-duplicates out." If you look carefully at the above (1)(2)(3), you will realize that the problem is that Beeblebrox's behaviors to show undisguised hostility to me, instead of the photo itself. I just know that it's not right to violate the policies and to argue with people who correct me. Personally, I've never heard of anyone being blocked for not uploading a photo. The 2000+ photos are in my hands, I have the right to choose whether to upload it or not. Anyone should not cross the line before being uploaded to Commons. U.S. Department of Transportation: Model Inventory of Roadway Elements
Hello, very inexperienced in this realm, but would it be possible to upload a document from the Department of Transportation on roadway standards in the U.S.? I am interested because I would like to use a picture on another wiki (wiki.openstreetmap for the OpenStreetMap community) to help describe how to measure roadways. Well, technically yes, since it doesn't violate copyright. But it might be against conventions of the wiki you want to use the link in. Bear in mind that the content on the wiki is still to be served under a free license, and if you link to a copyrighted material from somewhere in the text, it's actually against the stylistic code of wiki. External links should be in their own separate section on the page where only those links exist in a form of a list. Also, embedding the copyrighted image from an external link to a page is not only against the conventions of wiki, but also might be considered as copyright infridgement, because technically it is linking to a legitimate source, but the link is used in such way it creates an illusion the image is actually coming from the wiki, which is in fact copyright infridgement. So while it is possible to link copyright protected media from a wiki site, do it in External links section only please and do not embed the media directly to display on the wiki page. If you have a choice of linking the direct media or the page the media can be accessed from, prefer the page. That way the owner can be actually supported in a way the page specifies. I think they can. Specifically the new Enforcement Guidelines make it possible to enforce UCoC when something like that happens off-wiki, with certain limitations, and that is if it happened on a third party platform in a space that was created for a Wikimedia project (like on an IRC chat in the WMF project's channel). Unfortunately, UCoC doesn't apply to a space that is completely out of control of Wikimedia Foundation or any community that maintains one or more Wikimedia projects. Often the harassment happens on facebook, PTT, etc off-wiki places. They're smart people, so they know how to avoid WMF sanctions. I'm a healthy person, but they keep claiming to anyone that I have Asperger's syndrome. Because they complain about I have always doing something to make them displeased. Especially, they say that my behavior is excessively follow the Commons' policies. I see that everyone here doing the same thing as me, so I don't understand what's wrong with following the Commons' policies. Why am I the only one being attacked personally? Living under the pressure of constant harassment can trigger anxiety and depression, which makes it harder to think clearly and focus on what matters every. Therefore, I had to give up several daily tasks such as: to nominate files for deletion, the file description was found to be wrong and to tell uploader about it. @Kai3952: While there is such policy, obviously some actions are exceptioned. One of the most obvious exceptions is protection against dangerous threats and continuous harrassment. Where the enforcement of UCoC fails, legal aid may come in handy. If you feel you're really globally targetted by various global admins, contact WMF Trust & Safety Team. The maximum retrospective period of Taiwan is six months, and therefore cannot to pursue legal responsibility for all previous harassment. The Taiwanese admin had the massive Taiwanese wiki-editor's support behind them. Not only did they not deal with the harassment, but also they accused me of harassing users and going against the spirit of Wikipedia. This proves that it's useless to ask them for help. Ironically, when I realized that the harassment comes from off-wiki places, the NLT policy says I can't take legal action against them, that's why I'm stuck there. As far as I know, all harassment comes from a rumor in August 2019. Reke spread rumors about I have Asperger's syndrome based on his feelings, especially he is acting as a staff member in the Wikimedia Taiwan, which means that his words represented the WMF, so those who displeased with me believed him. And that not only caused me a lot of stress, but lose the trust of the Taiwanese community. Most of Taiwanese who harassing me are different from the account name they registered on Commons, it becomes very difficult for gathering evidence against them violated Wiki rules. However, I can know from their complaints, they know a lot about what I do, so I assert that they are active on Commons. If I really did something wrong, they should to resolve issues through the normal channels, and I'm happy to accept any advice that would be beneficial to Commons, but they didn't. As I said. Contact Trust & Safety team, that is the highest end on UCoC that should be able to resolve these issues. Wikimedia servers are not hosted in eighter China or Taiwan, they are hosted in United States, and all Wikimedia projects are international, including local language projects, that means any issues that happen on Wiki sites hosted by WMF transcend international borders. Taiwan as far as I know isn't part of China (regardless of what Chinese government says), they're independent country and what happened here is they assaulted someone in another country. I know that China and Taiwan do not really go along very well, that sadly includes also most citizens. They essentially let politics influence their decision making, which is unacceptable on sites like Wikipedia. Ask WMF Trust & Safety Team for help and specifically ask for an independent judgement of someone who doesn't have anything that ties them to China or Taiwan (any kind of relatives, any kind of citizenship in eighter of these countries, etc. You need an independent jury that won't be influenced by one or another side, and that is best if someone from a third country comes to judge the case. Hi. I've sourced a photo of three US National Medal of Science winners together, from their medal ceremony. (It's public domain, taken from a government website.) Two of the people in the photo have Wikipedia pages that lack a picture of them, and this one photo would actually provide a great profile photo for each of them if it was cropped. In which case, I'd have to create two different cropped versions--one for one person, and one for the other. How should I go about uploading? Is it preferred to upload the original photo (featuring all 3 people) and then alter it? Or should I create two cropped versions on my computer and upload them separately as two different files? (In which case, what do I do with the original? I assume it's still valuable to include in Commons.) I just don't want to make a mess with the upload. Thanks! @IbIANTiA: I would suggest uploading the original and then also uploading each of the cropped versions, so all three versions would be on Commons, each under a different name. @Success think: Categorization is utilized using [[Category:Name of category]] syntax on files description pages, categories may have or lack their respective page. Category that lacks a page still works as a category, the link is grey though and only shows alphabetical order of subcategories and categorized pages and files. Category with a descriptive page shows with a blue link. For searching, there is the search bar in top right corner, you can essentially write Hatnur Dam into it and press search. It will search in common namespaces (main namespace, category namespace, file namespace), if you want to find a specific category, you can press to search and then limit the search results to the category instead. If you know for sure you want to search for a category, you can skip the search results page settings and simply prepend your search phrase with Category:, so it's like this: Category:Hatnur Dam. Searching for pages and categories is rather easy. If you want to link to category, but not use it, the link syntax for category is like this: [[:Category:Name of category]] (notice the preceding colon before the category keyword, that prevents the link from functioning like categorization of the page it was included in, without it, it's not a category link, it's the category usage). Category:Hatnur Dam doesn't seem to have a dedicated page, but it is still possible that images are categorized under this specific category. In fact, there is one image. I've found some other images of Hatnur Dam that weren't categorized in Hatnur Dam category, simply by searching Hatnur Dam among image files. Try this link: Special:MediaSearch/image/Hatnur Dam. Hi everyone,
I work for wikimedia france and am having à workshop on commons with around 20 newbies. Is there a way I could get a bypass to allow them to create their accounts all in the same place ? Sorry, it's been a while since I've organised à training session IRL.
Note that both require a meta:Bureaucrat to assign this user group to you.

Hello there, when browsing media, I'm frequently struggling with the following problem. Some contributors do a bit too much of a good thing when organizing their media. Example: Category:Timber framed houses in Hennef (Sieg) includes 101 other categories, with the vast majority of them including only 1 image. In order to browse those images you seem to have to click through all the folders. At least that is what I do. If each of these is a separately designated cultural heritage monument then it may actually be OK to have a category for each, and if so this is one of those situations where two reasonable goals may conflict. Wikipedia:PetScan can list files in a category tree, or files that are contained in all of two or more category trees. It doesn't show the images though. I think it would be quite easy to build a tool that would also show thumbnails of the files, but I don't know about any. –LPfi (talk) 18:59, 24 March 2022 (UTC)
Typically, it is easiest if that public institution indicates the license on its own site or on a page (such as it's official Flickr page) that is clearly under their control. Then Commons can give that as a source for the image and license. - Jmabel ! talk15:35, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
Yes. The other option is to write an e-mail according to instructions on Commons:VRT (which may be a bit convoluted in some cases). However, first make sure the institution owns the needed copyrights (or that the files are in the public domain). Just change your password and check Special:MyContributions. You might want to register an e-mail address through which you can get a new password in case it gets changed by somebody else (or you forget it). Only "free" photos are allowed to be uploaded. For contemporary photos such as this, it means we need a suitable licence from the photographer, such as CC-BY-SA. Upload images from my own collection of antique labels.
I am the founder and curator of Fabled Labels® Archives, which is a collection of circa 1872-1920 Louisiana trade labels. I am the person who discovered these labels back in 1975 at a now defunct New Orleans label printer founded in the 1870s. I made original labels available to both the Louisiana State Museum and the Historical New Orleans Collection as well as other prominent collections. The archive has been the subject of numerous publications. You may read the history here
I wished to upload one of the labels in my collection because it is relevant to a Wikipedia page I'm editing on the history of Brittany, Louisiana where I grew up and now live. It was a strawberry crate label from c. 1920. Brittany was once strawberry country. You would not permit me to upload the image even though I own the label and the photograph I took of it, and it has been in the public domain for decades.

@Jmabel: Filter 192 does not allow certain uploads, such as her MP3 files, except for users in certain groups. I don't know what workaround is intended to be used. @Viruaca2022: There are some restrictions on files that may be uploaded from the visual editor on Wikipedia (I assume that was what you tried). The upload may succeed if you instead use the file upload item in the left margin on Commons (such as at this page). However, these restrictions are in place for a reason.
It seems you tried to upload a low-resolution version of the photo. We do want as large resolution as possible. I cannot see the file you tried to upload, but is it your own portrait photograph, or is it a photograph of an existing portrait?
If there are doubts about the authorship you might have to provide more details for it not to be deleted; don't claim "own work" if you photographed a work of somebody else. I don't know what blacklist might have been involved; has somebody else maybe uploaded the same photo before?
The log entry for your try at an upload seems to suggest the file was coded in colour, but the filename suggested it was in black and white. Anyway, the image you saw may not have been the final image, as the upload was disallowed. Try again here at Commons, and then we can easier clear up any problems.
Which is the one pointed to by the upload link in the left margin. Your explicit link works equally well, but can be difficult to find or remember for future uses. –LPfi (talk) 07:05, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

I've been doing some galleries, lately, and found them pretty enjoyable to do. However, I'm really perplexed about some aspects of the culture, mainly what to do the wikidata infobox. So there's a Category page and a Gallery page, and from what I've found, it seems the infobox ought to have its place in both. When I started, I mainly emulated what I saw from the pages of american presidents. So I put the infobox on both pages, but Pi-bot, and some other contributors, revert those changes not only here, but on the wikidata article itself. So I'm quite confused as to how to proceed here. Furthermore, there's the question of wikidata. There's a link we can insert in a section called multilingual sites. From what I've seen of many articles there, it's the gallery page that should be linked there (if it exists), not the category page. There too, edits are being reverted, because it's quite frankly not clear what belongs where and how. So yeah, maybe someone can explain me how it all works so I don't make any more mistakes. There was an argument, when Wikidata was introduced, about how to handle Commons categories. I don't know whether there was a final consensus. Could somebody point to a guideline page on this? Or is it just about individual editors following their impression on how this should be done? One issue is that there may be several galleries for one category, e.g. in different languages (this last is not common, but illustrates the problem). The main issue is that for most items, the category is more useful than any existing gallery, but I think the Wikidata folks hold that as less important. –LPfi (talk) 07:14, 25 March 2022 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Would you mind taking a look at this again when you get the chance? The situation might've changed since the OP posted here. The Flickr source provided for the file shows it has been released under a PD license, but the Flickr account is only a day old. This might possibly mean two things: (1) the copyright holder relicensed the photo after your post (2) the photo actually didn't originate with the Flickr account. When reviewing Flickr files, as I have done for many years, is that new Flickr users with very few images who suddenly change the licence to one we accept after getting a warning, always appears suspect. It's probably academic because the article this was intended for fr:Baptiste_Anquez has been deleted as not meeting the frwiki eligibility, which I suspect (if I translate it correctly) is their way of saying the sources for this person are insufficient to prove notability. So in addition, if its licence is suspect and it won't be used, it may well be considered OOS. However, if the copyright holder can provide a verifiable permission then I'm happy to keep it. Lots of info here on rules for posting and linking pictures, but couldn't find any info on whether you are allowed to download the images and put them into a book that will then be published in hard copy and sold. Not that hard, I think. You probably want to restrict yourself to a manageable number of licences, so that checking what they require doesn't get too cumbersome. Being able to use the images in books is one rationale about why commercial use must be allowed for files on Commons. You need to reserve a couple of pages for attributions, licences and links, and if you process the images before printing, you may need to put those versions on the net somewhere, available at least as long as you distribute the book and some time thereafter. –LPfi (talk) 12:31, 26 March 2022 (UTC)
I do NOT have the technical ability to trim a sound file. I want to trim down to the first 2 seconds of File:Sydney tram 18 - 2016-02-14.ogg so there is no dead space afterwords. So in other words I just want the first 2 seconds of this file. Can someone help me to do this. @KonstapelKatt: Definitely copyrighted, so unless there is a free license available it can't be on Commons. en-wiki, unlike Commons, allows non-free use in situations like this, and has a copy local to en-wiki. Rename erroneously-named photos descriptions category and etc.

I have noticed that two wikimedia photos (not mine, but on a subject which interests me) are wrongly named, wrongly described, and wrongly categorised (with the same wrong name).
I realise that I could do this manually/slowly one line at a time, or request the author to do same, (or an administrator) but out of curiosity What is the simplest procedure that can be used to rename
the two photos
AND their descriptions
AND their wikimedia category (also wrongly labelled)
AND their related wikidata entries
AND anything else that might be needed .. .. in a minimum number of steps and without upsetting the logical relations between all these items ?
If you want to do it in a minimum of steps, open them for wikitext editing, add {{Rename | new name.ext| 3|reason}} (e.g. at the top of the page), where "new name.ext" is to be substituted by the corrected name, "3" stands for "to correct obvious errors", and "reason" should be substituted by an explanation, short if obvious, longer if less obvious. Then rewrite the description (in all languages you master, for languages you don't understand the best path is probably to remove them and hope somebody comes along retranslating). At the end of the page, change categories as needed. I don't know the best path for the structured data, you might have to just click the structured data tab and edit with its user interface. If the photos are linked from Wikidata, go to the Wikidata item and deprecate the use with a "reason for lower rank" (?) of "erroneous" (?). (I don't remember the Wikidata names, try to find them). That should be all. The Wikidata item shouldn't need to be changed, unless it is wrong for the thing it is about, which if I understand correctly isn't the subject of these photos. –LPfi (talk) 11:35, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

It would be much easier if you gave the example, preferably with links. I thought the photo was of Joe Bloggs instead of Fred Bloggs. Then you'd move the photo to the other category and fix name, description etc. If it is the church that is wrongly named, not the wrong church named, then it's another procedure of course. You'd move also the category, and if it has more files than these two photos, you need to move those also (cat-a-lot comes handy). Wikidata might adjust by itself to that, if not you need to remove the faulty category name from the item and add the correct one. Then change the item label in all affected languages (on Wikidata), and check that it doesn't remain in some property (such as "native name"). Otherwise I think everything was covered. You don't need to change the files' Wikidata coupling (in the structured data), as it is to the item, not to the name. –LPfi (talk) 20:07, 27 March 2022 (UTC)

Yes, at least if it is hosted here on Commons. Check the file description page of the map to see what licence it uses. Perhaps use the crop tool there instead of using the screenshot, unless it is the screenshot that is interesting. When you upload your own version, use the template {{Extracted from}} as source, with the original file's name as parameter, and copy the author field and the licence.
If the map is uploaded locally on the Wikipedia, it may be used as "fair use", and cannot be uploaded here. In that case you should be able to use also your file as fair use, but procedures vary across Wikipedias.

If the file is uploaded locally to English Wikipedia as non-free content, then you can use (i.e. display) the file on any talk pages per non-free content use criterion #9 and en:Wikipedia:Talk page guidelines#Non-free images. You can add a link to the file's page to the discussion, but you can't display it. Moreover, any screenshot or crop you make of non-free content will almost certainly be non-free as well, which means it too can't be displayed on talk pages. If "fair use" is allowed on the Wikipedia where you are going to use the file, you can upload it locally there. Fair use is allowed at least on Wikipedia in English, in certain cases. @FlantasyFlan: It's fine. I believe it's not overtly in the options because we don't encourage it for new works. I don't use the UploadWizard myself, so I'm not sure if there is a way to set it while uploading, but at worst you can edit immediately after uploading to correct the license to {{Cc-by-2.0}}. Please point to the file in question, so that we can check by ourselves some of the details that you don't tell in your question.
Generally, photos uploaded on Commons do not expire. We keep old ones, as they may be just the ones our reusers want; e.g. a Wikipedia article may want photos from different phases of a person's life or career. We might remove a bad photo when there is an equivalent good one, but I assume that is not the case here. If there is a reason to delete the old photo, please tell that reason to get advice.
We gladly accept the new photo. Upload it as any other file, with sufficient information on the subject, the author, and the licence. If there is a category for the person, make sure to add the file there (e.g. by using the Category field in the Upload Wizard). If there is no category, you could just add the new photo on the "other versions" line of the old photo and vice versa. You could also change image in Wikipedia articles, the languages of which you understand (after having checked the caption and other context to make sure the change is appropriate), or post a request on the article talk pages when you don't understand the language.

Why the file has been marked for the speedy deletion
I didn't see any mention about CC-BY-SA on the page given as source. Is there? Or where is it said that the logo is under CC-BY-SA 4.0? Did you just pick the default licence on upload? You can do that for your own works, but not for works of others. Please point out any evidence of a free licence. Because there ain't any. Raid Shadow Legends is a free to play game, but it's not free in essence of license, and that also includes graphics. One thing might be to look for COM:TOO of the logo, but I doubt it's below TOO as the logo is quite complex. It has a complex texture, bevel effects, a little glare effect, and fairly specific font. I don't think it's suitable for Commons. The poster may be successful uploading a lower resolution version to English Wikipedia under Fair Use if it isn't there already. I cannot find any uploaded files, I cannot find any abuse logs for your username, the only protocol log is your account creation and the only edits you have on Commons are Images on Wiki page and this section, nothing else. Your only edits on said page revolve around this deleted File:Col-cleveland-war-prize-painting.jpg, which was uploaded by User:Kushmania. Is it your older account? Did you lose access to that account (forgot your password) if that is true? If so, did you lose access to your email account associated with that account as well? Because one thing user can do if they forget their password is request a recovery process. That will send a newly generated password to said email or a link to change a password (old password is deleted and no longer valid, site cannot send you your old password as passwords are stored in an encrypted hash form which is virtually irrecoverable). If you no longer can access that email, then that's unfortunate. I'm not sure if people are allowed to use a new account because they can no longer access their old account for both forgetting password to the original account and losing access to associated email account as well. Audio file needed from a native speaker for a topic, however I was unable to upload my recording

I was casually browsing the Wiki and noticed that there is a lack of an audio file for the correct pronunciation of the word “pastala”.
I tried uploading my own recording (mp3 audio file), as a native speaker of Latvian, however, my upload was automatically rejected.
How could this situation be resolved? I would really like to contribute to this article in particular, as well as many others in the future.

MP3 upload is disabled for new users, because of many copyright violations in the past. The easiest way to solve this is to upload the files in ogg audio format, if your audio recording software allows this. See Commons:Audio. --rimshottalk20:02, 30 March 2022 (UTC)

Please document more fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and then request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound). How to transfer images from English-language Wikipedia to Commons?
Yesterday I saw that all photos in an article on English-language Wikipedia are not uploaded to Commons. I would like to know how to transfer the images to here. See:
@Kai3952: At the top-right of each page (at least in the usual desktop skin) there's a link "Export to Wikmedia Commons". Assuming the file has a suitable licence (and the first one above does, at least), that roughly converts the file description into a Commons-compatible form. You can change the name the file will have on Commons, or edit the description, but in most cases you can just scroll to the bottom and choose "Import". That will copy the file to Commons with all its history, and then you can edit the description and add categories as appropriate. There are other ways to transfer files to Commons, but I think this is by far the best. --bjh21 (talk) 00:34, 16 March 2022 (UTC)

If your window is narrow, it may be behind "More". It'll only appear if you're logged into English Wikipedia. @LPfi: I don't have admin rights on English Wikipedia and I can see the link. Never used it tho, but I guess it should be available at least to registered users to use. I guess third party cookies blocking might be a problem here, but I personally never tested this. The thing is each Wikimedia site works with a central login. It is capable of detecting your login session on another wiki and suggests you to reload the page to load the active login session. How exactly does that work? @SeanJ 2007: You cannot overwrite an image in one format with an image in another format. If File:Love Radio logo.webp is a copyvio, it should be deleted; if there is another logo that won't have the copyright issue, then upload that as File:Love Radio logo.png.
Also, in general, it is almost never correct to overwrite an image with anything other than technical improvements. If you are uploading a distinct image (e.g. a different logo), start from scratch even if they are both in the same graphics format. - Jmabel ! talk05:57, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

There is a policy regarding COM:TOO (Threshold of originality). If the original logo isn't released under CC-BY license, but is below TOO, or the uploaded part is below TOO, then you should use appropriate license template for this type of scenario. Just a reminder, not all countries treat TOO the same. Czech Republic for example is very vague about what can be considered an original creation. Apparently, all you have to do is to register it as intelectual property and it's basically copyrighted. As with the WEBP format image, I'm not sure what is the status of TOO. I don't know where Love Radio comes from, I don't know what TOO status is for it therefore. If there is no TOO and all it takes is just an inteletual property, then I'm afraid that even the new cut out logo might be a copyvio as companies like this rarely release new logos under a free license. Hi ProjectHorizons. Commons doesn't accept any type of fair use (i.e. non-free) content per COM:FAIR; so, if the file needs to be converted to such a license, then it will have to be deleted from Commons and then reuploaded locally to whichever language Wikipedia project where you want to use it in accordance with whatever the local policy is for non-free content. Now, not all language Wikipedias allow fair use content, but you can find a list of those that do at meta:Non-free content. As for this file's licensing, I believe you might be right but for a slightly different reason. If the content originated with REFL/RL, then their licensing doesn't seem to allow the unrestricted commercial reuse that Commons requires; however, the photo is attributed as "Alexander Nemenov (AFP)", which is en:AFP. It's possible that REFL/RL just was using the photo in one of its stories and the real source of the photo did release it under a license acceptable for Commons. That is something, though, that would need to be demonstrated per COM:EVID by the uploader for the file to be kept. Note that a slightly different photo of the same scene (along with many other photos taken in Chechnya by Nemenov around the same time) can be seen here in a 2019 AFP story written by Nemenov himself and there's no indication that he's been releasing his work under a free license Commons accepts. Nemenov has an Instagram account here, but I can see whether the same photo can be found there under an acceptable license. There seems to be a least enough doubt about the file's licensing to start a discussion about it at COM:DR, but first it might be courteous to ask the uploader why they think the file has been released under a "cc-by-sa-4.0"license; it could just be that they aren't very familiar with Commons and thought the file was OK to upload. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:58, 26 March 2022 (UTC)

Looks like the 03 and 06 are essentially the same image, the later only slightly cropped, which in my opinion is better. As for 02 and 09, that is indeed a duplicate image, the latter is simply a higher resolution version of the first one. Higher resolution is better, so I'd keep the latter. And yes, you should pay attention to cropping. Not every single image is a duplicate. There are images that are cropped versions of a source image, where the crops show different regions of the original image. One prime example may be simple group photo of several people, and several crops of índividual people in separate files. That is not a duplicate image as it actually helps distinguish between various people in a group photo. Or cropped sections of a panorama shot, showing different parts of the landscape. That is another prime example where crops are useful. As for different resolution sizes, I'd only keep the highest resolution file as it provides as much detail as it can, and MediaWiki software provides lower resolution versions of the original image automatically, which saves on data usage, so there is no need to manually provide lower resolution files. The thing is that the site is able to detect native resolution of the device screen and its pixel density, so it can provide higher resolution for the same pixel width on page where needed (mobile phones, FHD laptops with higher density screen, etc.) As for slight crops leaving a vast majority of the original picture, this is a tough one in decision of which one to keep. I guess the less lower value parts are in the picture, the better. Background typically does not provide enough useful informations about the image subject, so if you crop outer parts of the backgroud out of the image, then I think that is better. But that depends on what was in the background, because while not always, sometimes background does provide useful informations, too, which is a context to why that photo was taken or when, or where. Sometimes it's better to keep the original photo and delete the cropped one that essentially shows the same thing as vast majority of the photo was left in. User:Jmabel seems to be wrong this time. @Polda18: Look again at 02 and 09, they are not only different resolution, they are a different crop. I agree that the multiple versions here are not valuable, and I would have no problem with someone nominating them for deletion, but they are not duplicates. I wasn't really passing judgement on whether or not we should delete superfluous images (I personally don't think it's worth the effort, but no big deal if someone wants to spend time on it) but if we are going to have multiple versions of the same photo, they should be linked. - Jmabel ! talk15:28, 30 March 2022 (UTC)
Ok, the image is somewhat slightly cropped. Still, it displays the exact same subject from the exact same angle from the exact same focus. I simply do not see this as individual crops, I see this as duplicate images. There is a threshold which says where the crop is its own image with its own context, and where the crop is too wide so it cannot be considered as not duplicate. Don't tell me that those images don't look the same to you. Machine might be easily fooled, but human should be able to see how similar these images are. Often the uncropped image shows a bit of context that may be useful for being able to add to the description, or to give a feeling for the context for a reader of an article where it is included. The examples you gave would make sense if there had been disagreement over which one was better, but these seem to be original simultaneous uploads. Free image suitable to indicate "surprise/shock/horror"?
I'm surprised and shocked!
I've just uploaded Dun dun duuun!. The most famous use is the Dramatic Chipmunk which has a great image. But that image is not free. I'd like a free replacement, I'm open to suggestions. Any image properly showing surprise/shock/horror is useful, but I'd like to keep it in the animal world if possible. There is [Surprised young cat.JPG], but it looks more bewildered than surprised. Well, on English Wikipedia, Fair Use is allowed, but I'm not sure if you're allowed to reuse already uploaded Fair Use material that has been uploaded for other articles. As for Commons, yes, the original screenshot of the Dramatic Chipmunk video cannot be uploaded here, it's not a free image. In an essence, the viral video already kind of violates copyright as it's a straight cut out of copyrighted material. The only reason it is allowed is that it is an original composition of various materials for the purpose of entertainment. Dramatic Chipmunk was in an essence one of the first memes that appeared online. Memes are a special type of Fair Use material where you use a copyrighted material for various jokes. There's a limit however, and that is you shouldn't exceed some amount of copyrighted material that would classify as remix and you would have to pay royalties to release it. It's obvious that you cannot sample an entire movie for a meme. That would be a parody otherwise, and believe me, people have been caught on that. Funny parody, but copyright violation in an essence. It was an entire movie with a parody voiceover. I liked it, but creators ended up in jail and with massive fines. Short snippets? They're mostly okay. But again, that could be considered Fair Use, which Commons doesn't allow. Whatever, it's not free to use, unless the original is released under a free license compatible with Commons. So it's not that I upload it there to English WP and stick a Fair Use template to which article I want to use it in, I need to write a rationale to use it before uploading it? And if it is already uploaded, I need to write a rationale to reuse already uploaded content before sticking it to a new article? I guess using Commons and finding a free image sounds easier in this case. I edit mainly Czech Wikipedia, we do not have such thing in our local wiki. Czech Republic doesn't utilize law similar to the Fair Use and such content therefore cannot be allowed on Czech Wikipedia. So much simpler to just reject uploads rather than having to fill out rationale to use a copyrighted material under Fair Use. I do understand why Commons doesn't allow non-free content like that. Since Commons is a global storage for every single wiki, it does make sense that it shouldn't host non-free content as it would make it available for wikis that don't allow such content. Fair enough. You add the rationale at upload or shortly after, or before or after adding it to a new page. On the law, though, I would think that you'd have similar provisions: aren't journalists allowed to publish pictures of an art exhibition they write about or, on radio, include some of the music of a concert they visited? The provisions may be cumbersome for our needs, and using them may not be worthwhile. Wikipedia in Swedish, which I know best, also doesn't allow free use, partly out of principle, partly to avoid the hassle of checking for copyright violations among local uploads. –LPfi (talk) 11:29, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

It depends on what source the image is from. I am not familiar with Indian government and Army sources, so I can't tell if the said image is in public domain (which usually is if it comes from an official government source). Commons usually doesn't allow photos from news articles as those photos are usually subject for copyright protection, which means these images cannot be uploaded to Commons. They may be uploaded in a lower resolution to some language Wikipedias (not all) that allow Fair Use material, but Commons doesn't allow that. Keep in mind that some countries do not adapt a law similar to Fair Use, their language Wikimedia projects therefore may not allow Fair Use content. Read more at COM:FAIR. There is no licence tag for use in the USA. However, I assume that the mention of "The Golitsyn Museum, Moscow, 1886" indicates it was "published" at latest that year, i.e. before now-95 years. Could somebody check and add {{PD-US-expired}}? –LPfi (talk) 09:12, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
Crop and upload a picture already in Wikimedia Commons?
Hi! I am pretty new to Wikipedia Commons, but someone was asking at Wikipedia's Teahouse if they could upload a picture of Lil Huddy. They can't as it is not their picture, but I looked to see if I could find if he had any picture here already, and I found this one: File:Weist & Influencers.jpg. You can overwrite an image with the croptool, but you can also create a new file. If you overwrite, you get a red warning message ("do you really want..."), if you create a new one you can edit the proposed filename "oldname (cropped).ext" before saveing. however you have to edit the description page, the tool only inserts links between both images, doesnt make other changes to the description C.Suthorn (talk) 12:52, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

Bug in Upload Wizard
Quite a while ago I reported a bug whereby clicking "Upload more files" in the Upload Wizard and then choosing a file consistently causes a spurious error message "There was an error in your submission. You are already uploading the file filename." This still has not been fixed. While it is possible to click through the error, and the upload apparently works OK anyway, it is still a pretty glaring or blatant bug that really ought to be fixed. I wonder whether anyone here can exert any influence to get that done now. ITookSomePhotos (talk) 10:26, 31 March 2022 (UTC)
I cannot do anything about it, I just note that at most batches of upload, I get that error message on one or more of the files. Sometimes there might be a reason (reuploading a file on "upload more files"), but mostly not. –LPfi (talk) 11:35, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

Uploading files/images that are in the public domain but which are apart of an archived publication

I've been doing some work over on Wikipedia, and have been trying to add some historical images to certain articles. I found some really great ones already pre-uploaded to the Commons. These images inspired me to dig into their sourcing, and I found that they were posted at archive.org. The images, however, were uploaded via Flickr from a now-defunct account used by archive.org on the website. I found some other really great historical images on archive.org and am hoping to get them uploaded to the Commons. Should I simply snip them as a screenshot and then upload them? Or should I upload them to Flickr first? And what would that procedure look like in terms of labeling, sourcing, and licensing? Really appreciate any help you can provide!
@JohnHawkinsBois: There are doubtless people with more experience in this kind of thing than me, but here's what I'd do. I wouldn't try to take screenshots, since that's very dependent on precisely how your browser renders things. I similarly don't think there's any merit in going via Flickr. Instead I'd download the "single page processed jp2 zip" file and unpack it, giving a big pile of .jp2 files. Then I'd load the page I wanted into my favourite image editor, crop to the part I was interested in and save as JPEG. Then I'd upload the JPEG to Commons using the Upload Wizard. For the source, I'd specify the archive.org URL you gave, with a note along the lines of "cropped from processed JP2". In this case, the licence tag is simple: {{PD-US-expired}} ("First published in the USA before 1927" in the Upload Wizard). --bjh21 (talk) 20:42, 31 March 2022 (UTC)

@IconEditorMaster: The Upload Wizard requires you to enter something in the date field, but if you select the pencil icon next to the date you can write whatever you like in there. If you know the year, you can write that (e.g. "2022"). If you don't even know that you can use the {{Other date}} template. For instance, {{other date|?}} will generate "Unknown date

Yes. Write something sensible, as accurate as you can. Somebody else can use {{Other date}} to get it automatically translated to other users' languages. It supports intervals, ca, before, probably etc., and if what you write cannot be made to fit its model, the text can be left as such. When using a file, I am often interested in when the photo was taken (or whatever), and the date is also often critical to determine copyright status (copyrights may expire 50, 70 or 95 years after creation or publication, for some works in some jurisdictions). –LPfi (talk) 18:52, 24 March 2022 (UTC)

The question is can we take a screenshot of the left side of the video (with a bald guy) and use it here? Or we can use only the right side (with radio hosts)? I am asking this because the hosts said that this bald guy is using Skype to communicate with them or whatever. They are not recording him directly. @RenatUK: there were discussions on com:vpc on this problem. you can find it in archives. i remember the conclusion we had were (1) we dont know. no court case has been brought upon this problem yet.
