La Cucaracha hamburger linked to Miren Agur Meabe

Miren Agur Meabe, a Basque writer.
A hamburger at restaurant La Cucaracha in Munich, definitely not a Basque writer.

Something weird is going on here. The image I uploaded of a hamburger in a Munich restaurant (the bottom image here) is being linked on WikiData to Miren Agur Meabe, a Basque writer. Commons already has a correct image of her, but for some reason the wrong image was linked on WikiData and thus it now appears on pretty much every interwiki page. I would correct it myself but I don't know how to use WikiData. Can anyone help here? JIP (talk) 15:00, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

This was vandalism from an anonymous IP address.
If anyone want to, say, swap the photographs of notable politicians to photographs of donkeys in hundreds of articles at the cost of just a couple of edits, then vandalising Wikidata is massively more effective than vandalising Wikipedias.
These pages are not protected against anonymous edits. -- (talk) 15:21, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Aggtown

No question, this is to whom ever operates this website. you have false information about the southern sound of music. Aggtown is the number one question being ask right now and it's every where but Wikipedia. I own the rights to the name aggtown and felt people needed to know what it stands for and what makes it important. It's my way of giving back, if I needed to use you guys to push anything about Aggtown, it wouldn't be a question of where and who made it up cause there wouldn't be a question to ask. Everything stated in the Aggtown page is facts, I followed the Swishahouse template just to make sure i was following you guys rules. I have never had a problem with anyone using the name Aggtown cause it represents the results of teamwork. With that being said, In writing, Wikipedia is not allowed to publish any material relating to the name Aggtown. Upload to wikimedia allowed?

I am the owner of a painted picture, a work of art. Am I allowed to upload a photograph of the picture to Wikimedia in order to publish it on a Wikipedia Site?Pankratius (talk) 14:55, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Please note that owning a painting does not automatically put you in a position to publish any derivative photographs, because the copyright may still rest with the painter. We need to know the name and lifetime of the original painter, or if it is a work from the United States, we need to know if and when it was first published. Only the painter or their heirs would be able to grant a free licence should this painting itself still be copyrighted. De728631 (talk) 16:43, 1 February 2020 (UTC)
Unless, of course, those rights were formally transferred to you along with the painting, in which case you will need to use the COM:OTRS process to prove that. - Jmabel ! talk 17:02, 1 February 2020 (UTC)

Bonjour,

Uploading images for Promenade Mall (Temecula, California)

Hello, I have some questions regarding some photographs I took at the Promenade Temecula shopping mall in Temecula, California, United States. One photograph is of the outdoor ground-level shopping portion as taken from the second level of the main mall, and the other is of the Edwards Cinema at the mall. I took these photographs myself on March 26 and September 2, 2019, respectively. If I took them myself, are they safe to upload? I don't quite know what the specific policy is about photographs of shopping malls. Regards, Pf1127

I'm guessing you are talking about File:ZULU_TRADITIONAL_ATTIRE.jpg? You could click on "Edit" to the right of "Caption" and enter a description of the content of the image there. But, there is a bigger problem. It looks like that image is a scan out of a magazine, so uploading it here was a copyright violation. You are only allowed to upload pictures here that you yourself took, or where you have written permission by the photographer. So this image will likely be deleted. --Taktaal (talk) 17:15, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

Can't fix misspelling in Category:Dion Lewis

On the category page for Category:Dion Lewis in Commons, there is a typo in the second category, but I can't figure out how to fix it. The typo is: Lewiss (Surname). It should be Lewis (Surname). How does one fix this? Jeffrey Beall (talk) 19:30, 2 February 2020 (UTC)>

It's because the Wikidata for the surname is https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q426463 and is spelled there primarily as Lewiss with an alternative spelling of Lewis. This is a bit weird because Wikipedia has lots of people for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lewis_(surname) and nobody at Lewiss so Wikidata could maybe be changed here to correct that? --Taktaal (talk) 20:03, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

--Negreydens (talk) 08:30, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

@Negreydens: As per your other question below. Unfortunately, a newspaper photograph from 1997 is unlikely to be suitable for Commons. It is too recent to be automatically free of copyright, so we would need additional evidence that the creator has released it under a compatible licence or released it into the public domain.
This one is even less likely to be available than the one below as it covers a whole page of a newspaper. You would need to evidence permission from anyone who holds copyright on each picture or piece of text. From Hill To Shore (talk) 09:37, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Source inconnue

Google translation: Hello, In order to illustrate an article in preparation on a French painter, French ancestor of my family who died in 1926, I downloaded in the category "Émile Maillard (1846-1926)" two old photographs taken from our archives family indicating that their author was unknown to me. I am told that this poses a problem but I do not see how to qualify the source other than "Unknown". These are photographs dating back over a hundred years relating to a French person who has died for over 75 years, of which I have no idea who is the author. Thank you for your help. From Hill To Shore (talk) 18:49, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
File:Maillard Emile - Identité.jpg and File:Maillard Emile peignant - Carte postale.jpg. First, you absolutely cannot release them under a CC license. You do not own the rights to them, so releasing them under a CC license is making a false legal claim. Secondly, it says "Date: 26 January 2020". That's wrong, and gives no one comfort that these are in the public domain.
Those are relatively easy to fix. The simple fact is that life+70 can be a very long time, like possibly 150 years, and that you don't know the author is not good enough to establish the author is anonymous. We generally assume that works whose authors have unknown death dates but not legally anonymous have 120 years of copyright in a life+70 system; 1926 simply isn't old enough. There's different levels of concern, but more details about where they were found, whether they were originals or copies, whether there's any chance they were published at the time, whether they were taken by family or professionals, when exactly they were taken, etc. could help.--Prosfilaes (talk) 23:56, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Advice on migrating image from Wikipedia

Hi. I've found File:Dorothy Christian Hare.jpg (en Wikipedia) at Wikipedia with a non-free licence but identified that it has come from the UK's Imperial War Museum.[1] As it is the work of an official British photographer from 1917-1918, it probably qualifies for a PD licence similar to File:The Women's Royal Naval Service on the Home Front, 1917-1918 Q19705.jpg. Can I please have some advice on the best way to handle transferring the image to Commons?

  1. Should I sort out the licensing issues at Wikipedia and migrate the file to Commons (if that is possible)?
  2. Or perhaps migrate the file to Commons and then sort out the licensing issues here?
  3. Alternatively, should I reupload the image here and request deletion of the original version at Wikipedia?
  4. Finally, what do I do with the IWM logo in the image? Should I retain it in the file or crop it?

Any advice you can provide would be appreciated. From Hill To Shore (talk) 00:13, 2 February 2020 (UTC)

@Negreydens: More generally, in most countries almost no newspaper photo from the last 50 years will be appropriate to upload to Commons without a specific free license; in many countries that will be a much longer term (e.g. 95 years in the U.S., and 70 years after the photographer's death in others). - Jmabel ! talk 16:33, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

--Negreydens (talk) 06:56, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

@Negreydens: If you are contacting the copyright owners to obtain permission, take a look at Commons:OTRS. That page explains the process of obtaining permission and sending it to Wikimedia. Wikipedia has some example emails you can send to the copyright holder to ask for permission (you don't have to use them if you have sent messages already or prefer to use your own words) and Commons:Email templates has examples of how the owner can grant their permission. From Hill To Shore (talk) 12:50, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm afraid "permission to use whole article includ[ing the] photo, but not [the] photo separate[ly]" won't do. We need a license that allows, among other things, (1) derivative works (which would include any abridgement or crop) and (2) commercial use.
Not everything out there is suitable for use on WMF projects. - Jmabel ! talk 16:31, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

Every so often, I come across Commons image where the license claim seems very unlikely (for example, an image which looks like a publicity headshot claimed as "own work"). I'm wondering which type of deletion nomination is appropriate here. Copyright violation seems most appropriate, but I can't always find the original image to prove copyright. using out-of-print books

Hello Wikipedia. I am trying to edit (improve) an existing article and a related article. I have appropriate image content (photos and illustrations) from an out-of-print book published in 1978. I have been unable to find the author (probably deceased). How do I best proceed? Thanks for your help! User Name: Jogachus60 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jogachus60 (talk • contribs) 22:52, 4 February 2020 (UTC)

Unfortunately, being out of print doesn't affect copyright. The copyright holder could sign a deal with a new publisher tomorrow and re-release the books.
Do you know the name of the author/photographer/illustrator? If they are named then you would need permission from them (or their estate, if they have died) to release the relevant image under a suitable licence for Wikimedia. Failing that, the work would become public domain in most countries from around 70 years after the creator's death. Assuming they died the same year the book was published, you would have to wait until 2049. If the author/creator can't be identified then we generally assume that the author lived for about 50 years after publication and then apply the 70 years, making 120 years total. That would put the earliest date for upload as 2099.
Practically speaking, seeking permission to release under a suitable licence for Wikimedia is the only option in the short to medium term. From Hill To Shore (talk) 00:24, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

Uploading an image published in 1924

So I've got this image from a book that I've been wanting to upload; it was published in 1924 and the author and photographer have been dead for more than 70 years. From my understanding of US copyright law, since its been more than 95 years since publication, the book and image should now be in the public domain. However, the Upload Wizard is telling me the image had to have been published before 1924. Does this mean I can't upload it here yet? Thanks
Alivardi (talk) 11:01, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

What country was the book/image published in? Some countries have terms over 70 years. From Hill To Shore (talk) 12:56, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
@From Hill To Shore: Germany.
Alivardi (talk) 13:02, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
Does anyone know if the year thing needs to be updated in the upload Wizard?
@Alivardi: I believe this would be OK, but you may need to use a different method of uploading other than the Wizard (e.g. Special:Upload). That requires that you fill out the whole {{Information}} template yourself, but if you model it on the wikitext of one of your own earlier uploads that should be easy. - Jmabel ! talk 15:34, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
@Alivardi: I've taken a look at the wizard and the problem appears to be in the instructions only. If you select the 1924 option, it should insert the 1925 template automatically (it is just the same template with text that gets updated each year). I'm not sure how to fix the instructions in the wizard though. From Hill To Shore (talk) 17:09, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
@From Hill To Shore and Jmabel: Honestly, I was just asking out of concern that the image will be flagged and deleted, rather than due to technical issues. If that's not an issue, I'm satisfied. Thank you for the advice!

Marked for "speedy deletion"

I have received a photo in low resolution from a newspaper that I have mad an wiki-article about. The paper's official customer-service-person granted me permission to use the photo as requested. This is the 3. or 4. attempt to do it right, still not fully accepted, I gather.

What shall I do to make the "possible copyright violation" disappear? I know I can use the file as an illustration in the article - I have it in writing.

Where to put this information or what should I do?

It falls under the exception: You can upload someone else's work if the author granted permission for anyone to use, copy, modify and sell it.

  • @Jesperb234: Hi. If you have evidence of permission to upload to Wikimedia Commons, you can email it to the OTRS team, who will check its validity. See Commons:OTRS for more information. Having personal permission from the copyright holder is not necessarily a guarantee of acceptance, as Commons will need permission for anyone in the world to reuse the image (either for commercial or non-commercial purposes). The OTRS team will review the evidence and decide if it is sufficient for our needs. From Hill To Shore (talk) 17:59, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Request for comment

I still don't understand what is the definition of hatc, because when I request for patroller yesterday, someone accused me again of hatc. Since the last time I failed to apply for permission, I have been careful not to do behavior listed in en:WP:HATC. But User:Camouflaged Mirage still accused of some wrongdoing I made a long time ago to add more edits, and think that I am a hatc. For the time being I will not discuss whether this logic is correct, Please tell me what hatc looks like in everyone's mind. 轻语者 (talk) 05:05, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

As for why I need to add a large number of edits in the short term, this is for a personal reason, so I don't plan to announce it. But I can swear it has nothing to do with requesting for permission. 轻语者 (talk) 05:10, 5 February 2020 (UTC)

Contact information for two wikimedia users?

Hi! I have got a manuscript accepted for publication in a Nature journal where we use two images from Wikimedia. The journal now informs me that they "are unable to publish images released under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike without formal written permission from the copyright holders. This is because the Nature Research journals are commercial, non-open access publications. If we are unable to contact these creators, an alternative image will need to be sourced." and "Do you happen to have a contact email address for the creators of Figures 2c & 2d? Their wiki user page does not seem to have a contact address.". The users in question are Etienne (he present himself as Stefano) and Ercé (presenting himself as Roger Culos). Can anyone possible help me towards getting in contact with these users? Best regards, Michael (Wikitullis)— Preceding unsigned comment added by Wikitullis (talk • contribs)

Copyright usages on deleted files

Hello

I used 3 images uploaded by WMF foundation on my blog and also linked back to your commons file as Creative Commons licence

After some time the images and also 500 other files uploaded by WMF foundation were removed by Commons community after discussion and by overruling WMF

Can I continue to use those 3 files under rationale that they were under CC licence on the day I uploaded them to my website under a CC reusable licence ? — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 103.30.143.214 (talk) 18:57, 3 February 2020 (UTC)

Can you please post a link to that deletion discussion, or tell us the original file names of the images you used? I think we need some more background information here. De728631 (talk) 19:06, 3 February 2020 (UTC)
The short of it: if they were deleted as copyright violations, then that would presumably apply to your use, too. If they were deleted as being out of our scope, that's not a problem for you. So, yes, links to the original file names would probably let us sort this out. - Jmabel ! talk 01:16, 4 February 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the replies. The link is Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by GYoung (WMF) 103.30.141.156 02:00, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
I'm not a lawyer, but: if your concern is "will I get sued," I think you are fine, I can't imagine anyone at WMF suing over this. If your concern is "was everything done entirely correctly, in accord with something like Commons' precautionary principle," then you'd have to delete. - Jmabel ! talk 16:52, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

How to reference?

Hey, sorry for the stupid question but this is the first time that I use images from wikimedia, so I want to be sure to correctly reference/attribute them. I want to use this image in a word document: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Germany_location_map.svg How do I correctly attribute the image in the text (Figure 3 Map of Germany. Source: ???) and also in the reference list? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 141.20.217.29 (talk) 17:33, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Not a stupid question at all. Take a look at Commons:Reusing content outside Wikimedia, which covers a range of issues for you to consider when reusing images from Commons. There is a specific section on attribution. For the specific file you have linked above, the licence says, "attribution – You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use." You may want to reference it as "(Figure 3 Map of Germany. Source: Image released on Wikimedia Commons by User NordNordWest under the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported license.)" I'd advise including a hyperlink back to the Commons file page and a separate link to the licence page. From Hill To Shore (talk) 19:40, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

I have uploaded File:Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission convoy during Hurricane Michael.jpg, File:Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission deploying during Hurricane Michael.jpg and File:Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Ford F series with trailer.jpg, in which they are all from Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, and are in public domain per Template:PD-FLGov (yet unknown why they tagged these images under CC-BY-NC-ND-2.0). However, the bot, just reviewed them as failed.
May any license reviewers assist to review the images correctly?廣九直通車 (talk) 10:42, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Note: I am a regular editor and not a formal reviewer.
Looking at en:Copyright status of works by the government of Florida, most works by state employees are in the public domain but there are some circumstances where they can claim copyright. While we may have the view that the stated licence is in error, my advice would be to query it with the authority. If they agree it should be PD, the evidence can be given to OTRS (if they don't update Flickr directly). If they maintain the copyright claim then we either accept it and delete the files or lodge some formal challenge. From Hill To Shore (talk) 18:40, 12 February 2020 (UTC)
@From Hill To Shore: As per Template:PD-FLGov, it seems that the FWC does not have authority to claim copyright... The copyright tag on Flickr is most likely, a wrong one.廣九直通車 (talk) 13:06, 13 February 2020 (UTC)
@廣九直通車: The template says specifically, "The information provided, especially the list of agencies permitted to claim copyright, may not be complete. Wikimedia Commons makes no guarantee of the adequacy or validity of this information in this template."
As the template can't be trusted as being completely accurate, my advice to resolve the issue with the source organisation stands. You are welcome to seek a second opinion and I should again emphasise that I am not a designated "reviewer" or administrator, who you asked for comment from originally. The file source shows that the photographer is claiming copyright and does not appear to mention a licence (although there are a few words in cyrillic that I can't read). As the photo is from 2016 we would need some evidence that the photographer has (or is willing to) released it under a compatible licence for Wikimedia Commons. Without that evidence the file will be deleted. From Hill To Shore (talk) 13:03, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

Category:Mier

Category:Mier looks a bit problematic. It includes images from three completely separate topics:

  • Mier, a form of beer made with mate drink
  • Ants ("mier" in Dutch)
  • Mier, a place in South Africa

The only thing these have in common is the word "mier". Should the category be somehow split up? JIP (talk) 13:16, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

I've dealt with the ants (moving them to Category:Formicidae). It looks from its parents like the category is meant to be for the drink, so the ones about the place in South Africa should also be moved. Then maybe the category should be moved to Category:Mier (beverage) and a disambiguation page placed at Category:Mier. --bjh21 (talk) 13:46, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
I've created Category:Mier Local Municipality, using Category:Ubuntu Local Municipality as a guide, and moved the South African images to it. --bjh21 (talk) 13:57, 7 February 2020 (UTC)
Ah, but it turns out Mier Local Municipality was abolished in 2016. Well, someone else can deal with that. --bjh21 (talk) 14:36, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

If you have a more recent freely-licensed photo then you can upload it here at Commons (if there's nothing suitable here already). The Wikipedia article can then be changed to use that photo. Aassuming the newer photo is better in some way, it's unlikely that anybody there would object to the change, although you can never be sure. --ghouston (talk) 06:53, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

logos for InfoBox Organization

Hi,I'd like to upload a charity's logo to use in an InfoBox Organization template. Is it the same process as uploading an image to wikimedia commons or is procedure different because it is a logo? I have an email from the chair of the charity releasing the logo for this use. I've read that wikimedia commons says you can't upload logos but I'm also aware that templates for the InfoBox Organization includes a space for logos so I just thought I'd ask for some help and clarity before I do anything!

Thank you in advance for your time and response

WendyGrowler (talk) 15:55, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

WendyGrowler, please upload the image, tagged with {{OP}}, then email the permission to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. However, any image here has to be free to use. You can't just license the image to just Wikipedia; some example permission statements are at Commons:Email templates/Consent. It must be licensed under an acceptable license, of which there is a list on Commons:Licensing
~~ Alex Noble - talk 16:44, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
  • @WendyGrowler: (cross-posted because my take is a little different.) Commons needs something much stronger than "I have an email from the chair of the charity releasing the logo for this use." We accept only free-licensed or public domain images. If a recently-designed logo is copyrightable -- basically, if it's anything more that text and simple geometric shapes -- then it is certainly copyrighted. If they wish to release it under a free license (and presuming they own the copyright; it might remain with the artist if it was never signed over), they must either indicate that license on their own organizational website or go through the process described at COM:OTRS.
  • If this can't be done, then you could upload the logo directly on the English-language Wikipedia rather than on Commons using {{Non-free logo}}. This would be usable only on the English-language Wikipedia, not on other Wikpedias. - Jmabel ! talk 16:50, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

My paints file images were deleted

The user Arthur Crbz had deleted images of my paintings, and I don't know why. See this talk with him at the following link. Sincerely yours. Fernando de Gorocica (talk) 06:19, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Yes!, Thanks, Arthur Crbz. I remember the case. This user pretends that OTRS validates their paintings, thinking that will prove he's the author -like we were some kind of curator who validates his work, and that's not our job (and we're not ready to that neither). --Ganímedes (talk) 11:01, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
Well @Ganímedes: , I'll wait for your help and the undelete all this images paintings files. Again, thanks to @Arthur Crbz: and to you.

I can't help you. OTRS doesn't work for the goal you pursue. We're not art authenticators. Your work's probably a derivated work for PD's paintings; that's all I can say. But an OTRS ticket won't validate your work as an artist, or make them more notable. If there is no notable article in any Wikipedia linked to you and your work, to have an OTRS won't avoid your files could be deleted. At this point, others of your previously uploaded and tagged files should be reviewing, I think. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 15:09, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
Ok, I understood. So who can help me with this "problem"? Because it is not normal delete image files for any reason! Must I reload again all those images o write an email to OTRS? Thanks.@Arthur Crbz: @Ganímedes: @Aleator: Fernando de Gorocica (talk) 18:32, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

None OTRS agent can help you. Files were not deleted for "no reason": they've been deleted because you're not notable. Regards. --Ganímedes (talk) 18:44, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Well, I have painted all those acrylics and I intend to share them, the goal of Wikimedia in general (I suppose). In any way, thank you.Fernando de Gorocica (talk) 23:04, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
@Fernando de Gorocica: If your goal is simply to share your images, you may want to upload them to another web service like Flikr, where you can choose whichever licence you feel is appropriate. At some point in the future, someone may want to use one of your images on a Wikimedia project and then begin the process of transferring the file here. From what I am reading here, it sounds like you are trying to work in the reverse order. From Hill To Shore (talk) 23:16, 6 February 2020 (UTC)
Well @From Hill To Shore: , I had been uploaded many files (1514) not for to share only, but for my works such as the translation of the Ptolemy's Almagest, Eclipses Calculus or for other purposes of others Wikipedias in another lenguajes being some images infographics too. I think that I'm contributing to Wikimedia in a right way. Thanks to you to understand me. Yours truly.Fernando de Gorocica (talk) 01:28, 7 February 2020 (UTC)

I find the deletion reasons confusing and lacking explanations or links to explanations. I look to deleted File:Cariló.jpg by Arthur Crbz, and I read "OTRS received as of 10 December 2019"", which is not a deletion reason. Other files are deleted with the inscription "Media missing permission as of 11 October 2019. Please send a permission statement to undelete this file" which is a deletion reason, but it really was not sufficiently clear that the media were made by Fernando? Didn't he send a mail to OTRS in October stating his autorship? He confused, I think, what OTRS is for. "Missing permission" is not fair if OTRS is ongoing.

Finally, Fernando had to explicitly ask which was the deletion reason (so that's why the summary field has to be filled with a deletion reason, and not with other text): the answer is "you're not notable". OK. Ganímedes, could you please link me any Help page about what "notable" means? I understand it in general terms, but I would like to read the Commons rules to see if Fernando fits or does not fit with that Policy. I don't read anything related to "notability" in COM:D. Own paintings are not allowed? Some of them, made by IMHO "not notable users, are allowed, and even "value images", like File:Antoni Gutierrez Diaz.png. Thanks. -Aleator (talk) 18:51, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Notable was probably not the correct wording, and we don't have a notability policy. However, we do have a scope. Images have to have an education use to be here; we aren't just an image host. In most cases, this means that unless the image is, or could realisticly, be used on any WMF wiki, such as (any) Wikipedia, Wikinews, Wikivoyage etc. we don't host it here. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 19:19, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
I cannot see deleted images, so I cannot argue if they were in, or out, of scope. Please, sysops, when deleting files, carefully record the reason and type it with the correct wording, because if not, it comes missunderstanding of the deletion rationale. OxonAlex: what is what I should read before pressing publish? I cannot find it in your contributions and I just want to understand things properly. Thanks. -Aleator (talk) 22:22, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Oh, no, wait, wait... "Out of scope", or "likely in scope", as sysop Majora stated at Commons:Deletion requests/File:La Virgen y el Niño - Meter Theou.jpg: Kept: most likely in scope. Could be used on any number of articles. Come on! What is going on? Please, what are the definitive reasons of the deletion and the negative of undeletion? Please, type it with the correct wording. Thanks. -Aleator (talk) 22:36, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
@Aleator: If you have concerns about the deletion by Arthur Crbz in regards to OTRS, you may wish to flag it up at a related discussion at Administrators' noticeboard. There was some sort of misunderstanding of policy due to confusing wording on a category page. I can't see deleted content either but if there is concern that this is captured by the same issue then it may get undeleted. From Hill To Shore (talk) 01:27, 11 February 2020 (UTC)
Well, I'm trying to understand all this messages, but I continue thinking that wasn't a good reason to delete those files being my paints and having a category "Paints by Fernando de Gorocica". Therefore, to finish this large topic and discussion without end, I'll upload all those images files to Flickr or another specific blog to them. Yours truly. Fernando de Gorocica (talk) 22:52, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Sorry all, I was traveling, no internet connection. As I explained before, Fernando pretends we certificate he's the painter of these files, most derivated works for artwork in public domain. I'm not able to do so, and I ignore if some OTRS agent can do it. If so, please be my guest. I think the best solution is that Fernando upload their files in another server with the license he prefers, and then everybody can judge by himself and upload them here if they're in scope. Why am I getting the error notice? I tried to upload the photograph of my culture but it won't upload — Preceding unsigned comment added by Regina Obilo (talk • contribs) 14:30, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Uploading very old family photos to an existing page.

I have some family photos of my great uncle, who was a WW2 war hero. There is an existing page about him - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wilson_(Royal_Artillery_officer). I thought it would be nice to see photos of him on the page. I also have a magazine from 1953 showing his visit to Buckingham Palace. All the material I have dates back from before 1950. I don't know who took the photos, apart from one which has the photographer's name, but no date and must have been taken when he was about 20, so around 1930. Is there a problem with copyright for this material?

Thanks, Julie Rollinson — Preceding unsigned comment added by Julie Rollinson (talk • contribs) 20:37, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Thank you Julie for the offer, but it is not so easy. The photographer is owner of the copyright, not the owner of the photo. So you need to find out the photographer and if he is no longer alive you need to know who inherited the rights of the fotographer and get the permit. Unfortunatley not everything that is published before 1950 is in the public domain. The rules vary from country to country, so if UK-law applies, it is end of the photographers life + 70 years that needs to pass before it is no longer protected and is in the public domain. However if the photographer is unknown, it is 70 years after publishing, but it would be fair to make a serious effort to find the photographer. So with the photo in the magazine you are probably out of luck, but maybe the magazine or some organisation that has taken over the rights of the magazine, has allready published it under a free license, so it can be uploaded to commons. So you need to check out for the magazine as well. --Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 21:07, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

Panoramio Tags

Lately a lot of Panoramio pictures have been uploaded by bots, those appear in commons categories that are only roughly fitting to the content of the photo. After review I am able to assign it to categories, but my questions is what to do with the panoramio tags that have been assigned automatically to the pictures. In many cases just one or two of the Panoramio tags realy apply to the photo, the others are more or less wrong or misleading. After updating the categories and correcting if necessary the description. Then there is the question what to do with the tags after that. Do those tags serve any specific purpose? Is there any other other purpose of them than just to help identify the content of the image? Do you recommend to leave them untouched, or to remove tags that dont fit or just to remove them alltogether after updating the description and the categories? I have one example to show it.

The panoramio tags say: “Sindelfingen, 2013, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland, Gerlingen, Leonberg, Magstadt, Renningen, Sindelfingen, Stuttgart”. So the file name and the picture description tells that the photo was taken in Maichingen (this information is backed up by the coordinations of the location), which is an administrative part of the city of Sindelfingen, so only the tag of “Sindelfingen” applies roughly. The year “2013” is represented in the exif data, the tags “Baden-Württemberg” and “Deutschland” represent the higher administrative units (the county is missing), while the tags of “Gerlingen, Leonberg, Magstadt, Renningen, Stuttgart” represent other places that have nothing to do with the picture other than they are neighboring to Maichingen, but are in different administrative units. So the only tags that can be considered useful are “Sindelfingen” and “2013”. The higher up administrative levels are represented by the top categories of Sindelfingen and the year by the exif data. I´d give it the Category:Maichingen, which is a subcategory of Sindelfingen and delete all the other categories that have been assigned by the bot and delete the tags alltogether as well.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 18:15, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

What do you mean by "tags"? Ruslik (talk) 20:22, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
The information box has a line that reads: Tags
(from Panoramio photo page)
InfoField
Sindelfingen, 2013, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland, Gerlingen, Leonberg, Magstadt, Renningen, Sindelfingen, Stuttgart

--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 20:32, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

These can be deleted without detriment to Commons. They are only useful if there is otherwise no location or subject in the file description. Rodhullandemu (talk) 20:37, 17 February 2020 (UTC)
Every Panoramio file has a location in it. It somehow was requirement for upload of photos to Panoramio:
Camera location48° 43′ 04.18″ N, 8° 57′ 31.58″ E Kartographer map based on OpenStreetMap.View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMapinfo

I would keep “Baden-Württemberg” and “Deutschland”. Even though we wouldn't add these as categories, we usually provide context like this in a good description. For a recent example from my own work, in File:Seattle - Hing Hay Park and Bush Hotel 02.jpg, the categories are only the very specific Category:Bush Hotel (Seattle) and Category:Hing Hay Park, but the description refers to "International District, Seattle, Washington, U.S." - Jmabel ! talk 23:29, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

This might be a thing to get into the description. As it is for the most a description in German, you can safely assume that 99% of the German speaking users can figure out these two without mentioning it in the description by clicking on the location or by clicking on Category:Maichingen which provides for all the higher up administrative levels: Sindelfingen, Landkreis Böblingen, Regierungsbezirk Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland. We also have means to discern between settlements with the same name. For example if you have two places called Malsch, then one has the name Category:Malsch (Landkreis Karlsruhe) and the other has Category:Malsch (bei Wiesloch), these are official additions to the name and are written on official documents and maps and it applies to all names where German names exist (Germany, Switzerland, Austria, South Tyrol, Alsace-Lorraine, even in the Eastern European areas that belonged to Prussia and Austria in former days, that have now different names). Ambiguity only comes in with names of rivers, mountains and hills, that usually have no added brackets on official maps, so then you need to specify the river system or the mountain range in file descriptions.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 03:34, 18 February 2020 (UTC)
I see now, the bot had placed these as categories! Yes, certainly they should be removed as categories. I was only speaking of the description.
While I'm sure you are correct about native German-speakers, there are plenty of us who read German just fine, but would not know offhand which cities are in which state of the BRD. - Jmabel ! talk 07:21, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a png logo as a new user while leaving the summary intact. Such uploads of png logos are not allowed at all. You indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a png logo, it's a copyright violation taken from the web. Please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata, but it may be judged too complex to be under TOO in the country of origin, so you may need to license it on your website or social media or send permission via OTRS. Also, any png image will look fuzzy when scaled down or jaggy when scaled up, so you may want to upload an svg or jpg version, too. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 22:28, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Photoshopped images

I take and post hundreds of photos to a website that I manage, however, all of them are photoshopped for a variety of reasons: 1) to improve image quality, 2) to crop images as needed, 3) to resize them from large files to smaller ones that load faster on the web. Does this make these images unusable on Wiki? I've tried to upload a number of them to have all rejected by one of your bots. What can I do? Sowamshe (talk) 13:09, 10 February 2020 (UTC)

Please don't upload downscaled images. The Wiki software will create appropriate thumbnails. --Magnus (talk) 13:58, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Generally, a good way to do this is:
  1. First upload your original to Commons.
  2. Then overwrite it with the appropriate crop or other postprocessed version.
  3. Do not scale down on Commons, our thumbnail software will do that, and we want the highest resolution available.
  4. Only then upload on other sites, so it is clear that the Commons image came first.
If you really want to upload on a different site before Commons, make sure that when you upload on the other site you are clear about the license and attribution.
The above is not the only way to do this, but it is one that should reliably give no problems. - Jmabel ! talk 16:38, 10 February 2020 (UTC)
Also note that while downscaled images should not be uploaded to Commons (see Jmabel's comment above), image quality improvements and croppings are OK. JIP (talk) 15:41, 12 February 2020 (UTC)

Trying to update a file - getting error "Found unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file."

I am looking to update "File:Christian_Politics_NZ.svg" for developments over the last three years. I've prepared a new version using Vectr, an online SVG editor. You should be able to view my update here. However, I keep getting the error "Found unsafe CSS in the style element of uploaded SVG file."

Unfortunately I don't know what is causing the error or how to fix it. Is anyone able to work out what's wrong with the file and either make a "safe" version, or work out how otherwise to fix the issue? HenryCrun15 (talk) 23:37, 11 February 2020 (UTC)

The problem is likely the embedded fonts. You'll have to remove those and use standard system fonts. --Taktaal (talk) 22:58, 14 February 2020 (UTC)

SVG with embedded bitmap image

English: I'm trying to upload a new version of File:CIExy1931 Rec 2020 and Rec 709.svg. This fails with a warning that there is a JPEG embedded within the SVG file. This is nothing I changed, though. I know that external references to bitmaps are not supported (for good reasons), but is this (now) also true for internal references?

@Zhuyifei1999: I think you are the one who programmed the upload filter. Am I right in thinking it’s not the internal link in the SVG, but the raster image as such because this has been misused?
— Speravir – 01:18, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
I don't know this filter. It definitely isn't an abuse filter, and my embedded data bot is defunct. Is this an mediawiki-internal upload warning? What is the exact message? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 01:36, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

(~ href to unsafe data found: URI target … in the SVG file uploaded. )
Ticking the checkbox to suppress upload warnings does not change anything at all.
I shall try to generate a radial gradient that can replace the embedded bitmap, but I'm not sure the result will be looking as nice. — Christoph Päper 10:23, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

This is uploaded-href-unsafe-target-svg message. Directly relevant code: UploadBase.php#L1682, which matches against the contents of the SVG. @Crissov: Would you mind somehow upload the file to somewhere accessible (eg. paste the contents of the SVG (SVG is sort of like a text file) here)? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:16, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
Also, what is your SVG-editing software? --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 07:17, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
I edit SVGs manually in a text editor. The binary data did not change from the original. Many files of similar SVG files use this embedded JPEG. I would expect the same error if one re-uploaded any of those.
I found the culprit after reading the PHP source code responsible for the warning: a space after the semicolon that was added to improve the readability of embedded CSS and I thought would be allowed there was not caught by the regular expression "!^data:\s*image/(gif|jpeg|jpg|png)(?>;[a-zA-Z0-9\!#$&\'*+.^_`{|}~-]+=(?>[a-zA-Z0-9\!#$&\'*+.^_`{|}~-]+|"(?>[\0-\x0c\x0e-\x21\x23-\x5b\x5d-\x7f]+|\\\\[\0-\x7f])*"))*(?:;base64)?,!i". I checked RFC 2397 and learned that the Mediawiki is correct: a space is not allowed after the semicolon. My bad. — Christoph Päper 08:09, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

Interactive SVGs containing script code

I am working on a series of interactive SVGs, where the reader/students can adjust experimental parameters and study the outcome which is visualized in the graphics. When trying to upload my first simulation, I realized that images containing script code are not allowed. I tried to implement the functionality in simple animations, however due to the dependencies on several parameters and the complexity of the mathematical models this seems not to be feasible in general.

Considering Template:Scripted_SVG, is there any chance to include scripted SVGs in the near future? If not, is there any other way to implement the described functionality?

Take a look at File:嘉義縣平林國小 Chiayi County Pinglin Elementary School(Dalin,Chiayi) - panoramio.jpg, it looks like a artwork. I'm not sure what it's called in English so I don't know where to find it on Commons. Lawn mower art? Mowing art?--Kai3952 (talk) 14:49, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Wiki folklore l get this server/network issue how can you help if the problem is not from my network provider? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Regina Obilo (talk • contribs) 20:05, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello, I am working on a page mainly for a class project and I'm trying to upload images for it. The copyright holder at http://www.medievalart.org.uk/index.html says that his images can be used for legitimate academic purposes, which Wikipedia surely is, but I don't know how to "officially" represent this usage. He does not provide a specific license code or anything, so I don't have that information to input for the images despite the images being clearly being used fairly, I believe. I'm new so any help would be greatly appreciated.

--Surferman155 (talk) 22:37, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

@Surferman155: Either (1) the image is in the public domain, which would be fine, and say so if it is or (2) per COM:SCOPE we need a license that explicitly allows derivative works and commercial use. "Can be used for legitimate academic purposes" is not such a license.
It might be possible to make a case for fair use in an article on a Wikipedia (you don't say what language, but if it is the English-language Wikipedia they are one of the ones that make some allowance for non-free images when no PD or free-licensed image is available or likely to be easily obtained), but that is not the case on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 00:22, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
Okay. I think I'll delete the image from Commons and reupload to Wikipedia with the relevant information. --Surferman155 (talk) 01:39, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

copyright of images

Hello. I am a professional photographer and have noticed one of my photos has been used on your wikimedia site, precisely here : https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Seiro_soba_by_Karl_Blackwell_in_Kanda_Awajicho,_Tokyo.jpg. This has been on your site for many years and I would like to know why it is there and how it got there since I don't believe I gave permission for its usage. Kind regards. We (specifically, a Commons user called Opponent) found it on Flickr, on the "Karl Blackwell" account. The particular picture appears not to be on Flickr any more, but our systems confirmed at the time that it was tagged with a Creative Commons Attribution license, and that matches many of the photos still there. Is that your Flickr account? --bjh21 (talk) 23:04, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Relevance of uploading separate lossy versions today

(Also started a discussion on the relevant talk page, but decided to post here for more visibility)

I intend to update the essay page Commons:Lossy and lossless, but there's one piee of advice there I'm uncertain of: the suggestion to upload separate, lossy versions of lossless files for use in Wikipedia articles. From what I've seen, with the exception of PNG files, Commons generates/re-encodes lossy versions of files after they're uploaded. Image files get JPEG versions in various resolutions, audio files get MP3 and Opus versions, and video files get VP8 and VP9 versions in various resolutions. And unless I'm mistaken, the purpose of these is to serve them to readers automatically when viewed from within Wikipedia. And this system is in active use, yes?

With the current state of things, problems like the bandwidth issue mentioned in relation to the Wikipedia Zero project should no longer be relevant, so the only thing worth mentioning would be the use of PNG files, for which thumbnails and other resolution versions are generated as PNGs also. So for those a lossy version should still be uploaded separately. -- Veikk0.ma (talk) 14:33, 18 February 2020 (UTC)

Artworks' images

Good morning, I have curated an art exhibition for an artist died 10 years ago. The family asked me to rediscover the artworks from her home and to study a new artistic path for a gallery. The artist was not really known because she made her works only for ten year in the Fifties, at a local level, receiving minor prizes and conducting only one personal exhibit in 1959, but she actually continued later on by drawing and creating works of art for herself, then rediscovered by the two daughters after she passed away. My question is: can I upload some pictures of her works displayed in my catalogue/exhibition? I would also like to write some lines about her on Wikiepedia platform. Thank you for your answer. Health related

Is there any health talk page on Wikipedia? Am using this medium to bring to the notice of anyone who can be of any help of this observation l made it is about a recent technology though it has been in existence long ago but, I wasn't aware of it. Its like a smartphone but it can connect to human beings' bodies through the help of an operator. If it happens that the operator is a bad guy he or she could make a human being to fall sick. Right now I am feeling terrible pain in my stomach and am having flu am expecting cough these am sure were caused by that technology but the challenge is l don't know who the operator is l am also sure that people around me are having the same symptoms but they would not admit of any knowledge of the device if l query them about the technology. My mom fell sick almost every month last year, she will shout on me if l tried to point it out to her that it is the handwork of some operator using the smartphone technology. It is not diabolical. I got my evidence from the health care representatives that came to where I was working sometime in the past. They came to educate us on a especial computer that can diagnose and treat human being. So if there is a computer that can diagnose then it is true that some improvements must have been made on that technology. It is probably in the hands of bad guys. These guys can communicate with you in your mind. They sometimes give instructions on what to do before they let go of you. These instructions are not medical. The point is l don't even have this device to fight back those who have it will not talk about it some of them don't know how to operate it. The issue of this device should not be treated as fantasy. It is real the operators keep talking to me through my mind using the device where they are . But am being chided by my mom as telling lies. She would say such things don't exist. Is there anyone who can help. Please don't ignore my post it is serious. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Regina Obilo (talk • contribs) 14:05, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Illustration of a coronavirus of the subgenus Embecovirus

I have an image file which I'm trying to correct the caption for. However, another user keeps on reverting the correction. I'm not sure how to have a discussion about the image and gain consensus on the correct caption and label. The current file has the following description:

However when you follow the source links [3] and [4], this description is not given. The correct description can be found by looking at the two reference given in the corrected description below:

This is a 3D medical animation of a coronavirus of the genus Betacoronavirus (group 2), subgenus Embecovirus (subgroup A), derived from a CDC released image. It explains the ultrastructural morphology of Embecoviruses. This virus has four surface proteins E,S,M & HE labelled in the image. The S protein gives the crown-like appearance, for which the virus is named. • @Mzgreco7: I have no idea what you mean by your "due date". If proper permission was sent to COM:OTRS, they will eventually be undeleted, but no one can guarantee you that will happen even within a week, let alone within 24 hours. - Jmabel ! talk 04:59, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Image Deletion

Hi Team,

I've accidentally uploaded a company logo today i.e. 20-Feb-20 which I need to delete. Kindly let me know the process of the same. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aminsha82 (talk • contribs) 09:52, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Go to the image page and click on "Nominate for deletion" on the left-hand side of the page. A form pops up asking for a deletion rationale. Type something, for example, "By request of uploader" and submit the form. It will automatically create a deletion nomination and notify you about it. Some time later, usually within a few weeks, an admin will come along and actually delete the file. JIP (talk) 12:10, 20 February 2020 (UTC)
@Aminsha82: Not sure I understand "20-Feb-29" (since the only date I can think of it meaning is still 9 days in the future date was later fixed) but given that you are the uploader, and presuming that you uploaded it within the last few days and it isn't used in any article on one of our sister projects, you can just mark it {{accidental creation}}. - Jmabel ! talk 16:27, 20 February 2020 (UTC)

Someone put a banner at the top of my wiki page. This banner says that "The admissibility of this page is to be verified (December 2019). Reason: insufficient sources. Insufficient sustainability.

  • @Finalcrypt: This sounds mainly like an en-wiki question, not a Commons question, but you will still have (and be required to declare on en-wiki) the same conflict of interest if you change your account name. - Jmabel ! talk 16:42, 21 February 2020 (UTC)
  • WP:COIN is probably the best place to ask for advice, the furthest you could probably go is to propose that the company or software is notable enough for an article, however you will be asked to refrain from creating it or directly editing it yourself. -- (talk) 16:57, 21 February 2020 (UTC)

Photo of pre-modern text

Hello, I have a question. If someone takes a photo of an ancient manuscript, do they have ownership of that photo or should it be in the public domain. The particular image I would like to use will be at the top of this web page. It doesn't capture any modern background outside the image however below on the page it reads "Photos © Monique van der Veen". Does this mean I need to give credit to that name? The same image can also be found by scrolling down through this website

-Prana1111 (talk) 07:20, 22 February 2020 (UTC)
  • In most countries, a faithful reproduction of anything 2-dimensional does not create a copyright or any other intellectual property rights. In a few (notably the United Kingdom) the law is murky on that (there's a doctrine about "sweat of brow" in taking a difficult scan or photograph) but Commons has come to consensus that we don't believe it would hold up in court, and that we generally ignore such claims. We've been known to give some consideration to such claims when we can strike a deal with a GLAM that is willing to give PD access to good scans of their works, but reserve rights on their best scans. so, in short, I'd ignore her copyright claim. - Jmabel ! talk 16:48, 22 February 2020 (UTC)

How to I provide the copyright and where to get it from? I downloaded this from the official page (Konfederacja.net) --KawaYT (talk) 19:46, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

@KawaYT: You don't indicate any licensing status. Do you have specific reason to believe this logo is either free-licensed or in the public domain? If not, it does not belong on Commons. - Jmabel ! talk 19:53, 23 February 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: It's free to download and it has been used multiple times in media and on the internet. Also it's a logo of political party and I refuse to believe the logo would be copyrighted.

--KawaYT (talk) 22:59, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

@KawaYT: Being on the Internet is not evidence of being free-licensed or in the public domain. Plenty of sites on the Internet have very little regard for copyright.
If you really refuse to believe it, I guess that's your prerogative, although (1) your refusal to believe something doesn't magically make it false and (2) possibly reading up on the subject might convince you otherwise.
Most political party logos in the world that go beyond text and simple geometric shapes are protected by copyright. The exceptions are usually because the logo (or the image used in it) is so old that copyright has lapsed. - Jmabel ! talk 01:19, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
So, really what I have to do is to ask the party directly? Is this how the rest of the political logos are uploaded here? --KawaYT (talk) 07:40, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
@KawaYT: Most political logos uploaded here are composed of text and simple geometric shapes, and so they cannot be copyrighted. A few probably are more complex and have the relevant permissions, or they are so old that they are out of copyright.
Yes, your best bet is to contact the party. Do explain to them that providing a license like this is entirely about the graphical design, and in no way waives their trademark rights. However, be aware that the party itself may not own the copyright, if the designer of the logo never signed it over to them. - Jmabel ! talk 16:28, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

I have no clue how to add a missing name from this list. I want to add my name as I was a recipient of the Australian Sports Medal in the year 2000, but my name is missing from this list. Can someone help me to add my name under the "G" bulleted list of recipients, but also include my current surname in brackets (because I am divorced after a long abusive marriage so I no longer use my previous married surname, and have reverted to my maiden surname). See below for the exact wording I wish to add under the "G" list of recipients (https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Recipients_of_the_Australian_Sports_Medal)

Anita Graham (aka Anita Sri-Ananda) JP

Please can someone either send me detailed instructions on how to do this myself, or perhaps kindly let me know but add the name on my behalf exactly as written above? You may email me directly by writing to anita.sri.ananda@gmail.com Your help is appreciated. Thankyou, Anita — Preceding unsigned comment added by Srizar (talk • contribs) 15:13, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

Srizar: This isn't a conclusive list of people awarded the medal, just those who already have a category here, because we already store multiple images of them. The category is so we can find images of people awarded the medal for use in articles etc, not so we can have a record of everyone with the medal.

Hello,

I recently tried to upload a photo onto a page for Ambassador Karen Pierce but for some reason my edit was removed. Can someone help me to resolve this issue or at least remove my edit so the previous photo can be restored?

Thank you in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Villa2020 (talk • contribs) 17:45, 25 February 2020 (UTC)

Villa2020 For any image to be stored here, it has to be licenced so it can be freely used, by anyone, for any purpose. As the original photographer is generally the only one who can license their image, your image was removed as a copyright violation. If it is your image to license, then firstly, read Commons:Licensing, and make sure you are fine with all the conditions, as these licenses are legally irrevocable, then email permissions-commons@wikimedia.org, who will handle the next steps. If you don't own the copyright to the image, we can't use the image here. Additionally, as an image of a living person, it would not qualify to be uploaded to the English Wikipedia as fair use either.

@JoelECabreraL: Hola y bienvenidos.
Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you indicated it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer license it on their website or social media, or send the image and permission via OTRS. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 23:47, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

This file has to be rotated by its vertical axis. How do I start this move? --Stunteltje (talk) 20:18, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

  • I suspect you mean "reflected on its vertical axis"? I don't think "rotated by its vertical axis" makes any sense here.
  • Assuming I've understood you correctly (and it does appear from the writing in the image that it is backward), this should be placed in Category:Flopped images. However, if that is the way that the Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology has it in their archive, we should not overwrite it. Instead, you should create an upload a distinct file: download a full-res version to your machine, reflect it vertically with the tool of your choice (and probably save it as a JPEG rather than a TIFF), and upload the result as a derivative work. - Jmabel ! talk 01:26, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
  • ✓ Done and I hope the correct way. If not, please correct.--Stunteltje (talk) 07:29, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

Convert an uploaded image to another format

I would like to change the format of an already uploaded image (a coat of arms), which is currently in JPEG format, to a more suitable one like SVG or PNG. Do I need to create a new upload or can I replace the existing one?

There is a link "Upload a new version of this image" on the image page, but that will upload the new image under the same name, so the extension will not match the format any more. So in this case, you need to create a new upload. JIP (talk) 09:50, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

If the date can be as late as 1929, that would only be 21 years after the picture was taken, so unless there is some special rule for works like this in Poland I'm afraid it's not at all a safe bet until 2070 or so (or maybe 2050? I seem to remember we have a rule of thumb accepting 120-year-old content where we can't work out the photographer after a good-faith search) unless we can work out who took the photo. - Jmabel ! talk 18:10, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Ok, thank you. I'll try to find out the name of the photographer Tashi (talk) 18:28, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Just as addition – @Tashi and Jmabel: See also COM:CRT in general, but especially Commons:Copyright rules by territory/Poland. — Speravir – 00:07, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
So if we could find out definitively that this work was anonymous -- not just that we can't find the photographer's name, but that original publication made no indication of the photographer's name -- 70 years from publication would suffice, and this would be public domain. - Jmabel ! talk 04:00, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Photos given by authors upload help

Hello, I'm updating a living artist's page and I would like to add a couple of new pictures I'm not the author of but that authors gave me (they are from two different people and they allowed me to upload them here). They will give Wiki their written consent for using them once they are up, but I'm not sure how to upload them since they are not available on-line and the wizard asks where they can be found. I'm also not sure what licence is better to use. Thank you on advance --Cat italia (talk) 14:19, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

@Cat italia: Hi, and welcome. They should upload themselves or give permission via OTRS.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 14:39, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

Need help regarding licensing of an image.

Do image from wikimapia -- https://photos.wikimapia.org/p/00/04/39/00/26_full.jpg -- allowed in Wikipedia?

I uploaded the same image on Wikipedia but not sure about the licensing: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Chaibasa_Engineering_College.jpg

I have used the same photo in this draft article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Chaibasa_Engineering_College - WhiteTheme (talk) 20:00, 27 February 2020 (UTC)

@WhiteTheme: http://wikimapia.org/terms_reference.html says:
F. All User Submissions of all users and all Wikimapia Data are freely available for commercial and non-commercial use under Creative Commons license Attribution-ShareAlike through WikiMapia website, WikiMapia API and other current or future WikiMapia services.
G. Public use of Wikimapia Data and it's derivatives requires special conditions:
a. Link to Wikimapia data original url, if viewed from any web browser
b. Mention of "Wikimapia.org" (with a link to http://wikimapia.org, if viewed from any web browser)
This suggests that the image can be used, but doesn't seem clear as to who needs to be attributed. This is presumably a user submission, not Wikimapia data. Just linking the JPEG doesn't really help anyone evaluate this. We can't tell if a picture is copyrighted just by looking at it. Is there some page on Wikimapia that indicates who took this photo, and what is the correct attribution? - Jmabel ! talk 04:12, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
I think a guest user uploaded the image to wikimapia. However, I could not find the image upload link. But, I could find some links that might be helpful. [1] [2] WhiteTheme (talk) 13:06, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

Hello Team,

I cannot see what's missing in the description of this image, it is showing me an error. I'm the owner, as photographer, what I have to do? File:Formula_1_-_Toro_Rosso_Scuderia.jpg

Thanks!

Hi Josemaf1photos, welcome to Wikimedia Commons. Thankyou for sharing such great photos with us here.
There's nothing wrong with that source, so I've edited it to remove the tag.
However, when professional photographers come here we generally request that they verify themselves via email to the OTRS team. This is because we want to ensure that you are in fact Jose M Moreira, and not just someone pretending to be you to upload your photos. We get a lot of people claiming photos they found on the internet as their own, and want to ensure that creators' copyrights are respected. Remember that by uploading here you are granting anyone the right to use your photo for any purpose, including making derivative works or selling copies.

Help on an upload

I recently meant to upload a promotional image of a soap opera character (File:Sid Vere.jpg), but accidentally uploaded it wrong. I understand it will have to be deleted and reuploaded, but would someone be able to help me out? I never saw the relevant settings while uploading it. Would someone either be able to upload it for me, or give me the exact instructions on uploading it? – DarkGlow (talk) 21:59, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

@DarkGlow: Hi, and welcome. To make Fair Use of that photo on English Wikipedia, please see en:WP:F.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 01:06, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@Jeff G.: I've just read through that guideline and again tried to upload a fair use photo of Ruhma Carter, but when I implement the release right of fair use rationale, it displays a speedy deletion message. While it's unorthodox, you be able to upload the file? It'd be such a great help! – DarkGlow (talk) 09:45, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: How was this file uploaded? This is fair use too, I want to upload a file like that. – DarkGlow (talk) 17:27, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@DarkGlow: Since you are linking the image itself rather than the file page, it is very hard to tell you how it was uploaded, but you will notice that nothing about the URL you have linked suggests that the image is on Commons. I presume from "wikipedia/en" in the URL that it is on the English-language Wikipedia. - Jmabel ! talk 19:48, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Here's the file link, sorry about that! Would you be able to help me out with uploading a fair use file like that? – DarkGlow (talk) 21:11, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@DarkGlow: Again, that is on the English-language Wikipedia, not Commons. For the English-language Wikipedia, upload at en:Special:Upload; copy-paste from the wikitext of the page you just linked, and alter the values to describe the image you are uploading. - Jmabel ! talk 23:53, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

User:Mdaniels5757 shouldn't have tagged the image with {{No source since}} because the image clearly has a source and the photo was of a public domain painting
User:Jeff G. shouldn't have tagged the image with {{Duplicate}} because the image clearly was a different photo so not a duplicate
I cleaned it up. Photographs of public domain art are always difficult so please be careful with these. Multichill (talk) 18:50, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:Discovery Partners Institute.png

I'm a little lost in this, my first image upload attempt. I believe that this image has the same Copyright tag as the lower image in the infobox in the Wikipedia article en:University of Illinois system. I'm not sure what this this Copyright status is called or where how I enter the Copyright tag. Thanks CWBoast (talk) 22:04, 28 February 2020 (UTC) The file which I'm thinking the file I'm trying to upload is similar to: en:File:University of Illinois System logo.svg. CWBoast (talk) 22:16, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

--CWBoast (talk) 22:04, 28 February 2020 (UTC)

You're welcome, Sir. I added {{PD-textlogo}}. --Achim (talk) 22:21, 28 February 2020 (UTC)
Thank you User:Achim55. I am developing, at "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:CWBoast/DPI-IIN" a Wikipedia article which will be titled "Discovery Partners Institute" (an institute within the University of Illinois system). (Maybe I should have named the image file "Discovery Partners Institute logo.png", rather than "Discovery Partners Institute.png".) Regardless, in addition, I wonder whether the "{{PD-textlogo}}" which you gave to this uploaded file should eventually be changed to something else. For example, I suspect that "{{Non-free logo|image has rationale=yes}}" (which appears as the first line of the == License == section for the image at the bottom of the infobox in "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Illinois_system") would be better. However, to do this, it seems that the "== Summary ==" would need to start with this "{{Non-free use rationale logo |Article =Discovery Partners Institute ...}}". But that "Summary" is in en.wikipedia.org and I am reluctant to change the == Summary == section in commons.wikimedia.org from what it is. Does any of this make sense? Is this something I should not worry about until I Move User:CWBoast/DPI-IIN" to "Discovery Partners Institute" in Wikipedia (assuming that this "Move" succeeds)? CWBoast (talk) 15:30, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
@CWBoast: Sorry, we do not accept Fair Use here on Commons.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:10, 1 March 2020 (UTC)
CWBoast, you added {{Trademarked}}, that's fine. I think we should keep it as it is now. If you still have concerns you could upload the logo to Wikipedia, where the en:Template:Non-free use rationale logo can be added. That template is not available on Commons. --Achim (talk) 18:58, 1 March 2020 (UTC)

Please, do not replace these images. Upload them under new names. Ruslik (talk) 19:38, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@Ecklacell: On Commons, distinct images normally go in distinct files. If you want to use one image rather than another in a Wikipedia article, you edit the Wikipedia article, not the image repository. - Jmabel ! talk 19:51, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@Ruslik0: Actually, these images literally need replacing. they have been updated and the old ones are no longer valid. - Ecklacell ! talk 20:40, 29 February 2020 (UTC)
@Ecklacell: Are you saying that the prior images are of no historical interest? That does not sound true to me, but if so you should nominate them for deletion, not overwrite them. - Jmabel ! talk 23:54, 29 February 2020 (UTC)

Photos taken by Fars News Agency, but no known URL source (dead links possible, can't be found)

I found a photos taken and used by Fars News Agency years ago on the internet. Problem is that while they have the name of the photographer involved, tracing the image to the original FNA URL link can't be found. It's usually either dead or it's been uploaded several times that I can't find it IMO. Should I explain that for source is "Fars News Agency", but URL is long gone? Ominae (talk) 13:38, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

@Ominae: Tineye or Google Images should help with your research, and {{Fars}} should help with licensing.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 16:10, 26 February 2020 (UTC)
Haven't seen Tineye. Google Images sometimes doesn't help if the image URL from the early 2000s is long gone. I likely can't say that the source is Fars without the appropriate URL. Ominae (talk) 07:56, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

Alternative to video2commons

Hi all, did you know an alternative to video2commnons that allow upload 4K 60p videos and do not take ages to transcode? And also, I need to upload some YouTube videos that I previously uploaded there. Thank you. -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 17:14, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

No? -- Rodrigo Tetsuo Argenton m 18:50, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
Well, if you could produce videos in webm / ogg, then no transcode is needed. However, transcode is a slow process, especially to the formats like VP9 and AV1 that compresses better. --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 20:56, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
For getting things off YouTube, try youtube-dl. You can tell it to download any free format versions hosted by YouTube with youtube-dl --prefer-free-formats (or youtube-dl -f webm or youtube-dl -f ogg to prefer those specific formats). Not all videos have free format versions, though (you can check with youtube-dl -F), but if you also install FFmpeg, youtube-dl can start the transcode process for you once the files are downloaded if you specify the desired format, like youtube-dl --recode-video webm (see here for some info on getting them to work together on Windows). If I recall correctly, that's essentially what video2commons does/did behind the scenes. clpo13(talk) 21:26, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
There are also some useful tips on manually transcoding files at Help:Converting video#Multi-platform command-line conversion tools. Speaking of YouTube, however, I think any new video uploaded there is transcoded to WebM, so uploading to YouTube plus downloading the WebM with youtube-dl is probably the easiest way to go about it. clpo13(talk) 21:38, 4 March 2020 (UTC)
Youtube also takes a while to transcode to various formats. The low res versions are available faster than highres ones --Zhuyifei1999 (talk) 00:02, 5 March 2020 (UTC)
