Using licenses that aren't in the dropdown menu

This section was archived on a request by: 廣九直通車 (talk) 03:17, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

I would like to know how to license one of my images using a license that is not available for selection when you upload a photo. Kestreltail (talk) 01:59, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Never mind, I have figured it out. You just have to manually edit the file page after uploading it. Kestreltail (talk) 02:05, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Glad to hear that, please feel free to ask here if you have further questions, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 02:51, 6 April 2019 (UTC)
@Kestreltail: I suppose you are using the UploadWizard. You could click on "Another reason not mentioned above" and fill in the licence tags of your choice. :) --Roy17 (talk) 10:32, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Query regarding uploading an image.

I was tasked to write a wiki page of an Indian education reformist. I needed to upload an mage to its infobox. So I needed to upload the image first to Wikimedia commons. Create account page says that "Username entered already in use", but I can't seem to find any mention of it

Hi, I'm trying to create an account, but when I inputted the username "mathram", it says that "Username entered already in use". However, when I searched for that username, I found nothing. I couldn't find anything either when I just selected to search everything for mentions of mathram.

I use that username on some other services, so it would be convenient for me if I could use the same one here. I just wanted to confirm whether or not that name is actually is use, and if it is, I will register with some other username.

Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 63.118.19.67 (talk) 04:59, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

  • Signing your posts on talk pages is required by Commons:Signatures policy. To do so, simply add four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your comments. Your user name or IP address (if you are not logged in) and a timestamp will then automatically be added when you save your comment. Signing your comments helps people to find out who said something and provides them with a link to your user/talk page (for further discussion).
Special:CentralAuth/mathram shows a global account which has logged in to four other projects. The first letter is forced to uppercase.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 05:09, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Ah. Thanks. I'll pick another name then. 63.118.19.67 05:17, 31 March 2019 (UTC)

Since the old account has zero edits, I think that having created a new account you could get it renamed to "Mathram" by asking at m:Steward requests/Username changes. --bjh21 (talk) 23:25, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

We appear to be relying on the Schlesinger Library’s statement that there are no known copyright restrictions. The archival source is here, specifically this page from a pamphlet titled At Calm Sedalia by Gordon B. Hancock, apparently containing no copyright notice but the statement “Reprinted from the editorial page of the Journal and Guide (Norfolk, Va.), November 28, 1931, through the courtesy of its publishers, …” with no separate photo credit. I guess it’s PD due to lack of proper notice. BTW you are likely to get better-informed answers to questions like this at the dedicated copyright noticeboard.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 00:05, 2 April 2019 (UTC)

Donation button on website using WikiMedia material

Hi I am thinking about putting together a website that uses WikiMedia images. The website will be free for anyone to use but I was wanting to put a donate button on the site so that people who like site could contribute to the cost of running the site. Would this be considered commercial or non-commercial use of the images. I have read quite a lot of the CC documentation and cannot find any reference to this. How to redirect files on commons ?

Why #REDIRECT target page name here is not working ? It worked fine the last time I used it on en-wiki. Thanks and please ping me -- EATCHA (talk) 07:37, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

@Eatcha: As far as I understand this, for technical reasons related to how files and file description pages work File:African rhinoceros in National Zoological Park-retouched.jpg needs to be deleted first. Then you can re-create the file description page (File:African rhinoceros in National Zoological Park-retouched.jpg) as if is was a normal page and put the redirect on it. To have the page deleted use "" or something along the lines . --El Grafo (talk) 07:54, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Private place

Hi,

If a picture was taken in a private place without the consent of the place’s owner, is it possible to upload it on Wikimedia Commons ?

Thank you, Christophe95 (talk) 07:55, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Yes, it is generally possible but see Commons:Non-copyright restrictions. Ruslik (talk) 08:08, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. Is it also the case if the photographer entered the property without authorization ? Christophe95 (talk) 08:18, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
There is no generic answer to that. If the image violates reasonable expectations of privacy, then it would not be something we would host, but obviously we cannot vet whether each person who took a photo might have been trespassing. - Jmabel ! talk 20:28, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

What to do while editing a page the template displays that the page has multiple issues when the information are correct?

Misidentified portrait

I believe that the file Joancabanilles.jpg, which is presented as a 16th century portrait of the Valencian composer Joan Cabanilles, is actually a cropped version of an anonymous 19th century portrait of Antonio José Cavanilles preserved in the Real Jardín Botánico of Madrid. It can be seen [1] (in color) and [2] (as a scan of a B&W photo). It's also very similar to other portraits of Cavanilles, such as File:Antoni Josep Cavanilles, quadre del cercle de Marià Salvador Maella (1739-1819)..jpg for example. My question is: can I modify in its entirety the description page of the file, rename the file with a more appropiated name, delete all its 'wrong' categories, etc. or request these changes? Thanks in advance. --MrPotato1010 (talk) 11:24, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

@RepSabatini: Hi, and welcome. The photo you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller photo, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you took the photo yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not take the photo, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the photographer send the photo and permission via OTRS with a carbon copy to you. Uploading photos

Hello,

I tried to upload the following images:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TSFamilySince1873.jpg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:TSMarkTwain.jpg

The latter has since been deleted as a copyright violation and the former is scheduled for speedy deletion. I understand I must have done something wrong with uploading these files. They come from the Truth Seeker magazine. I have the permission of the editor of this magazine, Rod Bradford, to release them into the public domain and upload. (I am a contributing editor to this magazine.) Can you let me know how I can upload these without violating the rules?

Many thanks. --Nameno1staken (talk) 17:58, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

You need to have the copyright holder of the magazine or whomever is authorized to do so on behalf of the magazine to contact COM:OTRS and verify permission for a free license of these files. Abzeronow (talk) 18:44, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Uploading Photos - New User Here

I'm a new user and am confused by the photo upload process. I need to upload photos, on behalf of my organization, to my organization's web page. The photos are photos of my organization and taken by an employee from the organization. Does anyone know how to best approach this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dtapia2049 (talk • contribs) 21:51, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

@Dtapia2049: Thank you for your inquiry. There are some issues that you would need to notice:
  • Firstly, you should ensure that all of your images fulfills our project scope, which could be found on COM:PSS. Please be reminded that all out-of-scope media files, such as most advertising materials, would be deleted on sight.
  • Secondly, I would like to know who is "the employee" you have mentioned. If you are the employee, please upload those files directly. If the employee is not you, then the employee mentioned should create an account and upload his file. Alternatively, you may want to upload the files, tag them with , and inform the employee aforementioned to send an permission in a official email address to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org , in accordance to the instructions on OTRS.
After such issues are solved, you may want to upload your files to Commons by using Special:UploadWizard. Please choose the files you want to upload, fill in source and licensing information, and provide more information, then you file is ready for use. Please feel free to ask me should you have further questions, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 03:30, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

  • Do not redistribute images or videos on other stock photo or wallpaper platforms.
  • Don't sell unamended or unaltered copies of an image or video, e.g. don't sell it as a stock photo, poster, print or on a physical product, without adding any value.

https://500px.com/licensing/licensing is not "the licensing for the site," it's a thing that expresses some licensing options. And most of it is about a stock photo royalty approach that is certainly not compatible with our licensing.
I'd say that if you want to use this image, you should contact the photographer and try to get them to give an explicit CC-BY-SA or comparable license, either via OTRS or by some other means. - Jmabel ! talk 15:17, 5 April 2019 (UTC)

Persistent error on upload of svg

New to using or uploading svg images. I have a single layer file as .psd format and did export>>svg. On upload to commons, i'm getting the message "Found href to unsafe data: URI target <image http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink:href="data:img/png;base64,[LONG STRING OF CHARACTERS]=="> in the uploaded SVG file." I'm running antivirus, and I don't think it's anything malicious. Just some sort of weird output from photoshop. I've had it happen on two files, but I've never tried to export and upload svg previously. Any ideas what's causing the error? Ian Furst (talk) 11:48, 6 April 2019 (UTC)

Ian Furst: It sounds like the image you are working with is a raster image and not a vector image. PNG is a raster image format, and Photoshop (unlike Illustrator) is primarily intended for raster images. The long string of characters is most likely a representation of the PNG image data. If the actual image is a raster image, there is really no advantage to embedding it inside a vector image. The result will not be scalable and if anything, the file size is likely to be bigger. LX (talk, contribs) 10:36, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
Yes, SVGs containing nothing but raster images are frowned upon. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:52, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
Any SVG will be rejected at upload if the code contains hrefs within it. See Commons:Commons SVG Checker for a tool to test your files before upload. -- (talk) 10:40, 7 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you. I'll attempt to make the images in Illustrator. Ian Furst (talk) 12:36, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Upload Server Error

I've been here before and you guys don't seem to care. Commons Video Convert is refusing to upload anything beyond 1mb. It keeps saying internal server error. Here's the link: https://tools.wmflabs.org/videoconvert/index.php I've tried contacting the guy who runs the bot, but he's been AWOL for months. I just want this thing fixed. I'll even volunteer to maintain it. Blackedhaze (talk) 05:58, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

A person who “even volunteers to maintain” some software must know which data formats are permitted for (direct) uploading to Commons. Special:Upload handles files up to 100 MB. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 10:57, 7 April 2019 (UTC)

Logo for Eton Shirts

Hi,

I would like to make the logo for Eton Shirts available so that it can be used on Eton Shirts Wiki. Since I am part of the Eton organization I just want to make my COI clear from the beginning. I have tried to figure out how it works with logotypes and asked my question on Wikipedia since both Acne Studios and H&M have logos on their pages. The answer I got was that their logos contained a normal font which is hardly something you can protect from a copyright-perspective. If that is correct, the same would go for the Eton logo - right? Swe jon (talk) 11:35, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

@Swe jon: Yes, it seems to me that the logo is just "ETON" in an ordinary typeface, which would be out of copyright everywhere. To tag it properly in the Upload Wizard, choose "This file is not my own work" and "Another reason not mentioned above", and enter "PD-textlogo" in the box. --bjh21 (talk) 12:07, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

To request speedy deletion you need to place Your reason to the page or image to be deleted. Ruslik (talk) 18:49, 8 April 2019 (UTC)

Just to clarify: no, you cannot speedy-delete files yourself. You can provide reasons you want them deleted, and an admin makes the decision and either deletes or doesn't. Similarly, you can nominate a file for (non-speedy) deletion and provide reasons, in which case an open-ended discussion will take place before a decision is reached. - Jmabel ! talk 00:44, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

I did this by clicking "Edit" and adding to the top of the page. That was unnecessarily complicated, though: you could have written I uploaded this file. It contains errors and is useless.. --bjh21 (talk) 13:54, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Uploading Mp3s from Maori Language Commission

I'm trying to assist the Maori Language Commission in New Zealand with uploading some word pronunciation files they have, but they are all mp3s and it looks like one of us would need to be an admin to allow mp3 uploads. Additionally, they've emailed me to say they're happy to put the audio in the public domain, but I don't know if they have to publish that permission somewhere, or if their email to me is enough. Can someone help us with what to do? Mayawagon (talk) 15:44, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

@Mayawagon: You don't need to be an admin to upload MP3: the relevant abuse filter also exempts people in the "autopatrolled" group. You can request membership of that group at COM:RFR. I think there are at least two ways to demonstrate appropriate permission: the easiest from the Commons end would be for the Commission to put the files on a Web page along with a statement of permission, and then for you to tag the files with LicenseReview to get that permission checked by a licence reviewer. A more heavyweight approach would be for someone at the Commission to e-mail COM:OTRS granting permission and stating which accounts may upload on its behalf. --bjh21 (talk) 16:32, 9 April 2019 (UTC)

Riders of the Sidhe by John Duncan

Hello, I am interested in using Riders of the Sidhe by John Duncan on a book cover for a book that I wrote that will be coming out this summer. It always helps if you can point out the specific image you have in mind. We have at least three different reproductions of this painting:
  1. File:"The Riders of the Sidhe" John Duncan 1911 McManus Galleries, Dundee.jpg
  2. File:Riders of the Sidhe.jpg
  3. File:Riders-sidhe-L.jpg
UK copyright expires after the seventieth year after the author's death. The painter died in 1945, which is more than 70 years ago.
Photographic reproductions that include three-dimensional details such as a frame (as in the first version above) are typically protected by copyright and require the photographer's permission to use (which is granted through the copyright license mentioned on the file description page, provided that you comply with the licensing requirements). In some jurisdictions, all reproductions may be protected by the photographer's copyright; see Commons:Reuse of PD-Art photographs. @P53Signature: Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/153 by trying to cross-wiki upload a smaller (<50KB or <5MP) jpg image as a new user while leaving the summary intact. The image you tried to upload is smaller, and you said it's your own work. Usually when someone uploads a smaller image, it is a copyright violation taken from the web. If you made the image yourself, please upload the full-size original of it, including EXIF metadata. If you did not make the image, please see Commons:Licensing for why we can't accept it, and have the image photographer / designer send the image and permission via OTRS. If you change the summary or use our Upload Wizard instead, you should be able to avoid that filter.   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 02:16, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Upload predicament

Hi,

An attempt to upload from my computer at the campus where I work always fails. Apparently a time-out. Using FTP I can put the image file on an HTTP server. Unfortunately both the contemporary and old wizards decline to accept an image specified by a URL. Hopefully the time-out failure is fixed later, if not sooner. =8~) Anyone have a solution for the interim?

Thanks, ... PeterEasthope (talk) 17:57, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

  1. Commons:Upload by URL is restricted to a set of Internet domains (due to fears of massive copyright violations);
  2. if PeterEasthope complains about UploadWizard all the way during one year, then why to use UploadWizard?

Incnis Mrsi (talk) 20:02, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

> PeterEasthope complains ... , then why to use UploadWizard?

Unlikely that I am the only person encountering difficulty. Is the timeout based upon total elapsed time? Rate of transmission? Deceleration?

In any case happy to use anything which works. Can I transfer by FTP? Any other suggestion? Thanks, ... PeterEasthope (talk) 20:24, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

@PeterEasthope: Hi, No FTP on Wikimedia projects. You can use Special:Upload. Regards, Yann (talk) 20:28, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
You could also try Rillke's bigChunkedUpload tool, which uses chunked uploads like the UploadWizard but allows you to choose the chunk size, which may help on slow connections: Help:Chunked upload#Chunked uploads with script bigChunkedUpload. Affected by overzealous speedy deletion

Hi there, I recently worked with an artist to upload an image of himself to Wikipedia (File:Haywyre_2017_press_photo_1_cropped.jpg)) He owns all the rights to this image, and after upload, his management sent an email from their verified email address linked to the artist domain to the OTRS email, where the image was placed under the CC BY 4.0 license. Pending a decision by OTRS, the pending OTRS template was placed on the file. After this, User:Patrick_Rogel has now tagged this image as a copyright violation and nominated it for speedy deletion, regardless of the fact the OTRS email from the official artist email address has been sent confirming it has been placed under CC BY 4.0 and I was given full permission from the rightsholder to upload it.

I investigated this user's talkpage, and it seems he has a history of speedy deleting many images on the site, regardless of OTRS status or verification from the rightsholder. While I'm not in a dispute with the user, what can I do in this situation? The OTRS has been received and will go through with no problems, once the backlog has cleared. So what are my options to prevent it from being deleted in the meantime? B4shful (talk) 22:57, 4 April 2019 (UTC)

Possible breaches of copyright are, correctly, a sensitive issue here for the legal implications they may have for the Wikimedia Foundation. OTRS pending does not protect images from interim deletion pending OTRS determinations. Sadly, it may be a slow process, but per our Precautionary Principle, we cannot take the risk of DMCS takedown or litigation. This could have been avoided at the outset by the image being uploaded by its copyright owner, with an appropriate licence. Third-party uploads are usually troublesome. Hope that helps. Rodhullandemu (talk) 23:28, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
It does seem, though, that we keep falling further behind on the OTRS backlog: I don't see any sign of that turning around.
Perhaps we should more encourage copyright-holders whenever possible to use a site clearly under their control to grant a license, rather than using OTRS? Maybe create a more standard way they could do that? That would allow verification by people not on the OTRS team. - Jmabel ! talk 23:46, 4 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the clarification. Rather than uploading by third party and getting the copyright owner to send the email to OTRS, how would you recommend editors get copyright owners to license images?B4shful (talk) 19:55, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
As Jmabel suggested, asking them to publish their works under a free licence at their own website first would be a good idea. If the original authors are tech-savvy, they might even add a licence remark to the EXIF part of a jpg file. De728631 (talk) 20:18, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Need some help understanding copyright rules

Is there a method where the subject (a living person) of a photo can post the photo to Wikimedia Commons and give credit to the photographer? Also, if you have images that were taken of your work (visual art) and these photos where given to the artist by the photographer but now the photographer is deceased, for example or you can't contact them. I've read through various information related to copyright provision on Wikimedia Commons but didn't locate information on this subject at least information that I can understand. Sorry to ask - but the rules seem rather complex. Thank you! LorriBrown (talk) 19:45, 9 April 2019 (UTC) Also don't understand how to sign this post? LorriBrown

Hey LorriBrown. You are correct. The rules are unfortunately very complex and all to do with copyright laws. For the photograph of a person, that would be an original creative work, and so the copyright would typically be owned by the photographer, not the subject. The only usual exception to that is if there was a legal contractual agreement transferring ownership, such as might be done in the case of a work for hire. If not, then it would have to be the photographer who licensed the work freely so that it could be uploaded onto Commons.
This works out differently in the case of two dimensional works though (assuming the work is two dimensional). Since the photograph is considered a "slavish copy" of the original work, then the artist (not the photographer) would generally hold copyright over the photo, assuming that there wasn't some additional creative contribution from the photographer. So for example, a picture of just a painting would be covered under the copyright for the painting itself. But a picture of the painting where the artist is giving a speech in front of it at a live event, would be considered an additional creative contribution from the photographer, beyond just a pure faithful reproduction of the painting.
Hopefully this helps more than it confuses. GMGtalk 19:57, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Hello GMGtalk and thank you for that explanation. So if I understand what you've explained correctly, if you should hire someone to take - let's say - a professional profile shots of yourself - and compensated the photographer for taking these shots - then you have the rights to upload and post these images to Wikimedia Commons. Would you be required to give credit to the photographer? If you are in an art performance and a picture is taken of your face (similar to a profile shot) while you are in the art performance and you given the prints of the images - you also would have the right to publish the picture. If a photographer takes pictures of your art exhibition, example, paintings, sculptures, or perhaps photographs that are being presented in the exhibition and you have been provided copies of the images - then you can also post those to Wikimedia Commons. However, if a photographer take a picture of the artist talking at an artist event perhaps in front of the art (paintings, photos, sculpture, etc.) then the copyright would be held by the photographer. Did I interpret your explanation correctly? If not please correct me. If so under which of the criteria would these photos be uploaded under? Thank you for your help navigating this issueLorriBrown (talk) 20:27, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Hey LorriBrown. Not quite. The thing about art I mention is specifically only for faithful reproductions of two dimensional works, like drawings and paintings. It doesn't apply to 3-D or dynamic performance works. The rationale is kindof that any photographer that makes a faithful reproduction of a two dimensional work would pretty much all end up with indistinguishable photographs. For example, this file is a digital scan, but it doesn't really matter who did the scan, because they'd all end up with exactly the same faithful reproduction with no individual creative contribution. However, if you have a bunch of photographers that take pictures of a 3-D or performance work, then they're all going to end up with different photographs based on their creative decision making. That's the part that introduces an additional copyright for the photograph itself.
The key thing about photographs for hire is not the "hire" part, not the "payment" part; it is whether there is a contract as part of the arrangement transferring the intellectual property rights. Sometimes you may have an arrangement that only transfers usage rights, meaning the subject can use the photo however they wan't because they paid for it, but they don't "own" it, so they can't legally transfer rights to others. Compare...umm...if you buy a DVD of the latest movie. You have limited usage rights because you own a copy, but you don't own the intellectual property behind the movie LaLa Land, so you can't sell portions of the screenplay to others, because you only have limited usage rights on your individual copy.
The short of it is that unless there is a specific contract transferring copyright ownership, or it is a mindless reproduction of a two dimensional work, then the copyright pretty much always defaults to the photographer. GMGtalk 21:37, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
More directly, if you hire a photographer for your wedding, if you want the copyright for those photos, you should take care to negotiate for that and make sure it's explicit in the contract.--Prosfilaes (talk) 21:58, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
GMGtalk and Prosfilaes (talk) Does Wikimedia have an example of an agreement that they would accept? I suppose it may be easier if the photographer posted the images. Sorry I'm still finding it difficult to comprehend that the artist who created the work has no intellectual property rights to the images taken of their work by a photographer. I suppose the whole process is much, much easier for any images the artist has taken of their own work or of themselves! Very good to know. Thank you!LorriBrown (talk) 22:48, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
Hey LorriBrown. The standard agreement for releasing images under a free license for Commons can be found at COM:CONSENT. GMGtalk 23:12, 9 April 2019 (UTC)
The artist who created a work generally has intellectual property rights to the images taken of their works, but not that let them unilaterally license the photographs; copying/reusing the photographs will take permission of both the artist and the photographer, except for FOP in certain conditions.--Prosfilaes (talk) 01:46, 10 April 2019 (UTC)
Eh...it's not exactly a hard fast rule like that. As I indicated above, it very much depends on whether the photograph in or very near its entirety is merely a reproduction of the work, or whether it introduces new creative elements. Even if it does, if it can be cropped down to merely a faithful reproduction, then that crop itself would still be covered only under the original copyright of the artistic work. Need to add an image to the Wikipedia Page of Prem Kumar (Malayalam Actor)

The photo I added was handed over by Mr. Prem Kumar to me for adding in the Wiki page. Now it says that it is copyright violation image. What can I do to put that image to that page? If so what are the steps I need to add another image? I hope Image will be easier for a person to be identified. Please help

uploading

Is there anything similar to drafts on Wikipedia whereby I could upload an image without publishing it on Wikimedia commons as a file? If so are such "draft" images under one's username subject to the same copyright restrictions as actually uploaded files? Danielhightrawn9 (talk) 11:44, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

Hey Danielhightrawn9. I'm afraid no, there is nothing for files on Commons that would be analogous to a draft article on Wikipedia, and if there were, then it would still have to meet the same standards as normal files, because copyright violations are not permitted anywhere on any project, including in draft space on those projects that have a draft space. GMGtalk 14:31, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
If you just need a place to put it on line so it can be discussed, Flickr accounts are free for up to 1000 photos. You can then link from here to discuss it, and there is a good tool to transfer files from Flickr so if you do ultimately want to bring the image to Commons you won't have to upload it twice. - Jmabel ! talk 15:36, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

Hi,

@ESS 2019: Thank you for your inquiry. Please be advised that you are now on Wikimedia Commons, and Wikimedia Commons does not host articles as per COM:PSS. @ESS 2019: OK, after further investigation, it is found that your account on English Wikipedia was blocked for spamming. Please be advised that all Wikimedia projects have a zero tolerance policy on spamming and advertising, as both of them are against the educational purpose of Wikimedia projects. As your account was used for spamming, and is a violation of w:WP:UPOL, I am sorry that I am not able to help with the situation. Please feel free to ask me for further questions, though, if you have any queries, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 11:43, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
@ESS 2019: Your account blocked on English Wikipedia, so I assume that's what you're referring to. At the bottom of en:User talk:ESS 2019 is an explanation of how to request that your account there be unblocked. The critical parts are:
  1. On English Wikipedia, your account name must refer to an individual, but your name, "ESS 2019" appears to just refer to a company name and a year. A name like "Angela (ESS)" is more likely to be acceptable. See en:Wikipedia:Username policy.
  2. You need to understand English Wikipedia's rules on conflicts of interest. These mean that you should not edit Wikipedia pages about the company you work for. When you request unblocking, you will need to convincingly explain how you intend to edit Wikipedia in a way that complies with its rules. See en:Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.
Once you've decided on a new username and understood the conflict-of-interest rules, go to en:User talk:ESS 2019 and edit the page to add a unblock-spamun template at the bottom, as explained in the notice there. --bjh21 (talk) 11:55, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Copyright help regarding File:SGH-250.gif

how do you add a license to your a picture? --Shellcoolguy (talk) 22:34, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Technically, you can either choose the applicable license in the upload wizard or edit the file description page after uploading. Which license you choose depends on where the image comes from. If you made it, you can choose any free license you wish to use. If you found it somewhere, you need to make sure it is freely licensed and select the suitable license. Most files found somewhere on the Internet are fully copyrighted with all rights reserved. The file you uploaded is an example of that. You may not upload such files here.
If you are unsure which license to choose for a particular file, feel free to ask here. --rimshottalk 23:16, 12 April 2019 (UTC)

Re-directions break the "Use this file on the web" links

I understand that when the same image is uploaded again under a different name, Wikimedia Commons' practice is to avoid the duplication by creating a redirect from the new image to the old image. However, if one takes the external ("Use this file on the web") link from the second image upload, the link is broken after the creation of the redirect. This seems to be the case for the "image" tag of this OpenStreetMap node. This link is broken because of this redirection.

The broken link was probably introduced as follows:

  • The "Israel Hiking Map מעלה ראס אל חממה.jpeg" image was uploaded on 12-November-2018.
  • Its external URL was added to OpenStreetMap at that time.
  • The image was found to be a duplicate of an older image, and redirect was created two days later, on 14-November-2018.
  • The URL in OSM is broken since then.

I have a few questions related to avoiding and recovering from similar scenarios:

  1. Is there an acceptable way to request that no redirects will be created for an image when the image is uploaded to Wikimedia Commons?
  2. Can one get an external link that will not be broken by a creation of a redirect?
    • Is there an API that can be used for that?
  3. Given such a broken external link already exists, how can one find the external link the the image of the redirect's target?
    • Is there an API that can be used for that?

--IsraelHikingMap (talk) 07:13, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

I don't think there's any reliable way to ask that an image not be replaced by a redirect. If there were, it would have to be mentioned on COM:FR, since redirects are created when a file is renamed. If we did have one, we'd need to work out what to do when we had two copies of an image, both labelled as not to be redirected. More generally, I think Commons takes the view that the failure of direct file links to follow redirects is a bug in the Mediawiki software.
I don't think you can get a direct link to a file that won't be broken. However, if you instead record the name of the file page, that can be used to extract the current direct URL for the image. For instance, this query in the API Sandbox will get the image URL for File:Geograph-2320459-by-Kenneth--Allen.jpg, which is now a redirect.
I don't know if there's an official way to go from an image URL to its page name. In practice, though, unescaping the last component of the URL path and prepending "File:" seems to give you something you can feed to the API described above. --bjh21 (talk) 11:13, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

help needed editing

A photo that I uploaded to update my father's Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juhn_Atsushi_Wada was removed on the basis that proper permission had not been granted. Written permission had been granted from the UBC Archives who hold the copyright, and I understand from administrator James Woodward's comments that this permission should be sent directly to Wikipedia. I wanted to ask how this could be done, prefacing my request on the Mr. Woodward's Talk page with my newness to Wikipedia and an advance apology in case I had posted in wrong place by accident and received the following comment, 'Vandalism is not appreciated. You have vandalised the content of Wikipedia Commons. Please stop. If you continue making inappropriate edits, as you did to User talk: James|woodward, you may be blocked from editing Commons. You may test freely in the sandbox.' I would like to find out where I can find more information on where I should be directing UBC Archives to give copyright permission and if I am to reply directly to an administrator, where the correct place to do this is without opening myself to accusations of vandalism. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Mie Iwasaki (talk) 15:29, 13 April 2019 (UTC)

@Mie Iwasaki: Do NOT accuse anyone of vandalism without reason.

Yann, Jeff, the only edit that Mie Iwasaki has ever made on my talk page was to put my talk page into a non-existent category by adding , and nothing else. That can be easily verified at Special:Contributions/Mie_Iwasaki. This is fairly typical vandal behavior, so think I reacted appropriately.

Thus the comment above, "prefacing my request on the Mr. Woodward's Talk page with my newness to Wikipedia" is incorrect. User:Mie Iwasaki|Mie Iwasaki made no request.

If they had written any kind of message requesting help, signed or unsigned, I would have done my best to help as I almost always try to be helpful to newbies. .     Jim . . . (Jameslwoodward) (talk to me) 09:40, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

Seemingly user_talk:Jameslwoodward has some special charisma that overrides even configuration changes for HotCat. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 13:03, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
In my opinion, Mie Iwasaki's edit on Jim's talk page was a newbie's error rather than malicious. Regards, Yann (talk) 15:14, 14 April 2019 (UTC)
Yann, I would ordinarily be perfectly willing to believe it was a newbie error. However, the fact that Mie Iwasaki claims above to have a left a message on my talk page requesting help when it is perfectly obvious that he did no such thing has to raise some questions. There's also the fact that "" looks nothing like an ordinary newbie error when looking for help. .     Jim . . . • Although it is almost impossible to say anything definitive without knowing what particular image you are talking about, it if very unlikely that the image in question would be either in the public domain or under a sufficiently free license. Very few images on social media sites meet these criteria. Being in the "public domain" is not simply a matter of being publicly available, it means lacking a copyright. Physical access to an image, or even being in possession of a physical work, does not mean you have any intellectual property rights to that image. - Jmabel ! talk 22:41, 14 April 2019 (UTC)

@Nidhiktaparia: You can upload a new version as long as it's in the public domain or has a copyright that allows reproduction and derivative works. See Commons:Licensing. If you upload a new version, it's best to retain the old one at a new name, too like "Company logo (2001-2018).jpg" or somesuch. —Justin (koavf)TCM 06:41, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
@Nidhiktaparia: In the above: "a copyright that allows reproduction…" should be "a license that allows reproduction…". If such a license is not publicly indicated on the client's own site, then you need to go through the process described at COM:OTRS.
Alternatively, if the copyrigght issue cannot be worked out, you can probably upload on the English-language Wikipedia only (not on Commons), in conformance with en:Wikipedia:Non-free content. - Jmabel ! talk 16:25, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

Is there any reason to believe that the photographer has approved publication of his work under a license that allows anyone to use, modify and redistribute it for any purpose? LX (talk, contribs) 10:41, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
LX I had chat with the photographer and he approved to publish his work in our website , instagram page and wikipedia. here is the use of his work in our page : https://www.instagram.com/p/Bv0mfoBBbMo/ Emami676 (talk) 05:18, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

How i am upload a photo on wikipedia on mobile — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drama panchi (talk • contribs) 10:23, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

Drama panchi: You uploaded File:Sufiyana pyaar mera. Jpg.png, so it looks like you already know how to upload files to Commons. Now you need to read Commons:Project scope/Summary to understand what you can and cannot upload to Commons. As for uploading locally to Wikipedia for those language editions that allow that, you'd be best off asking on the relevant Wikipedia edition (e.g. en:Wikipedia:Help desk on English Wikipedia) rather than here Commons. Image Upload

I have uploaded an Image of Paul Westwood,(Guitarist). Which I have permission as his agent. I would like to link this to his page. Please advise how I can do this. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Joyce Gyimah (talk • contribs) 12:12, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

@Joyce Gyimah: You're really asking this in the wrong place. This is Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all Wikipedias. You uploaded the photo to English Wikipedia, which is also where you've been editing an article about Paul Westwood. You probably shouldn't edit the article to add the picture, because that would almost certainly be a violation of English Wikipedia's policy on conflicts of interest. Instead, mention on en:Talk:Paul Westwood that you think that the picture should be added, and allow someone without a conflict of interest to do so. --bjh21 (talk) 14:42, 15 April 2019 (UTC)

Uploading pictures to Commons

This section was archived on a request by: 廣九直通車 (talk) 12:55, 22 April 2019 (UTC)

Hello, This is my first time attempting to upload something to Commons. I recently had a Model UN conference, and the organizers had uploaded some pictures of it on their website : https://swcmun.wordpress.com/ . I would like to upload some of those photos to Commons, but there is no license on it as far as I am aware of, and I do not know who the photographer is. Furthermore, I am worried about the people in the photo and potential privacy concerns. Could you please help me in determining whether these photos are appropriate to upload? Here are the links to the photos: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1G0GyzuxGYrDoMRCddPNph-O2aQevGe1_ https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1JFp2T7Q2VEM8HYygXE72lb01vwIMAuOr https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/19L6EFDeD0n18pModHcNyt__05EF8atuk https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1O7yAJAlYfrhFwYo4tHZfOFL82-hupfJ6

I want to add a wonderful diagram that gives a simple picture description of the workings of a synthetic microbial consortium. It's from the journal: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0958166912000341

I don't own the license to the article, or the rights to the image, but I found it on Google images. Is there any way I can use it? • Many company logos are public domain, in terms of copyright, although typically protected as trademarks (a totally separate body of intellectual property law). That's what Trademark is for. --Gae Liberati (talk) 09:54, 26 April 2019 (UTC) I took this picture from a Facebook page on Eduardo de Filippo, the Italian theater author. I can ask the permission to publish it on my Wikipedia page on the actress Nina de Padova, but according to the Italian copyright law, any picture made public is deemed free of copyright obligations after twenty years. And since the actress portrayed in the picture died in November 1987, there is no infringement of copyright law. In any case I will keep in contact with the administrator of the Facebook page to ask him/her his/her permission. Thank you very much for your co-operation.

@Gae Liberati: Thank you for your query. For your claim, all media files hosted on Wikimedia Commons must be both free in the United States and its source country. Even if your image may be in Italian public domain, I would say that it is far from US public domain. Anyways I would appreciate your contribution and liaison work, though there is a reminder, please contact the photographer instead of the Facebook page administrator, as the photographer is the person who has the legal authority to give permission to the image. Please feel free to ask me should you have any questions, thank you.廣九直通車 (talk) 10:42, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

Pictures of Neo Nazi

Hi,
I came across some pictures on commons like these 1, 2 and 3. I doubt that the permission of these people were not taken/ maybe it's a revenge from an enemy/ prank image. I do not want anyone to suffer just because one of his enemy uploaded his picture on Commons for revenge. What type of deletion request should I request ? I am pretty sure that the 1 and 2 are just prank images or revenge but I doubt that 3rd one maybe real. NOTE : None of these images have EXIF data. -- 🇪🅰〒ℂ🇭🅰- 💬 18:39, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Reporting fraudulent link requests

Perhaps this is a well known scam, but I was recently emailed by someone claiming to run a company called "TodayTesting" claiming that I had used one of their images on a website I run and stating that I was required to provide a link to their website as credit. As proof of this they linked to a Wikimedia Commons page showing the image with their company listed as the owner. This was a fairly obvious scam. The image I had used on my website is an old image with no copyright and I had used it a long time ago, yet they had only uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons recently with a fake date (suggesting the upload occurred much longer ago). The user who uploaded the image is this one: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/JerryFinley

You can see that they have done this multiple times and are still actively doing it (uploading images that are not copyrighted, putting TodayTesting as the source, and adding fake dates to make it look like the image was uploaded a much longer time ago). This is clearly an intentional attempt to target websites by downloading images they have used, adding them to Wikimedia Commons and then sending threatening emails demanding a link to their company website and using the Wikimedia Commons page as proof that they own the copyright. I am not sure how to report this as I am not a Wikimedia Commons user (I'm someone who runs a website who was emailed by this person) but this should clearly be investigated and the user should be banned. Wikimedia Commons is being used here as a front for a company to try and fraudulently request links from other websites and that's presumably a pretty serious violation of the terms and conditions of the site. Hapol928 (talk) 05:10, 10 April 2019 (UTC)

Pinging Túrelio, who is an administrator and has previously dealt with what appears to be the same person using a different account. — Preceding unsigned comment added by LX (talk • contribs) 09:00, 10 April 2019‎ (UTC)
I've added a deletion request to one of the images they have uploaded. It is incredibly obvious what they are doing if you look at the history on these pages. In this case the user uploaded an image that was on Pixabay and put Pixabay as the source originally. They then altered the attribution to TodayTesting at a later date (presumably because they think people only pay attention to an image when it's uploaded at first and making a minor edit to the details later will attract less attention). This is an organized attempt to not only flout the rules on this website, but also to put pressure on other websites to link to the TodayTesting site. I think it really needs to be looked at. Hapol928 (talk) 03:39, 12 April 2019 (UTC)
I've added more deletion requests to images attributed to TodayTesting. They all seem to follow the same pattern - the user uploads them with a link to a different website (presumably the correct source such as Pixabay) then at a later date alters the source to their own website (TodayTesting). I would suggest every image attributed to this website is likely not owned by the website, but I can't feasibly go through all of them myself to check. Either way, the user should clearly be banned. Hapol928 (talk) 02:08, 16 April 2019 (UTC)
I'm now getting into debates with other users because I haven't tracked down the original source image for all the images this person has used so I'm going to give up on this. It isn't my responsibility to police Wikimedia Commons for people who are misusing it in this way. I've reported it here, I've reported it on the talk page of Túrelio who dealt with this before, I've added a few deletion requests... really I've done my part and I can't justify spending any more time on this considering I don't use Wikimedia Commons and was simply dragged into doing this because I received an annoying email from the user in question (the user is obviously "Al Rose", who is mentioned in the thread above and was the name of the person who sent the email).
But as one last comment, I think this reflects pretty poorly on the way this site is moderated. I'm only here because this user was able to use Wikimedia Commons to falsely claim ownership of an image and then from that basis approach my website and no doubt countless others with spurious copyright claims to try and manipulate search engine rankings. I don't think it's difficult to see that's what they're doing given the crude way it's been done. If you just look at the user's history it's extremely obvious the way they've uploaded multiple images from free sources and later altered the attribution to Today Testing, usually with fake information including basic dates that have been falsified. I already know without question that's what they did with the image they claimed ownership over in the case of my site. However simply reporting that to someone who can ban the user has been anything but straightforward. The request has seemingly been ignored so far and worse, it's actually getting pushback on one of the deletion requests from another user - Incnis Mrsi - who is no doubt acting in good faith, but has rejected the request for deletion because I couldn't link to the original source for the image. The burden of proof seemingly being on me to manually go through every one of his images, find the original source he's ripped it off from, and only then might it be deleted. If it's this difficult to stop incredibly obvious scams like this then there must really be no hope for anyone who manipulates the site in a more sophisticated way. In any case, I give up. I've pointed it out here so if anyone has the ability/motivation to take this further then I would encourage them to put a stop to it but needless to say I won't hold my breath. Note that the user Hapol928 (talk · contribs) tampered with a deletion request page – in fact, there was such my edit 4½ hours earlier, but I almost immediately blanked it, as the diff indicates. Everyone should be extremely careful to accept Hapol928’s claims. Incnis Mrsi (talk) 07:38, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

Incnis Mrsi: Or rather than "tampering", they simply received a notification because you mentioned them (which doesn't get cancelled out just because you blank out the message), read it, clicked "edit" to repond, and missed or didn't understand the warning about editing a prior version. Upload image from Ancestry.com

I want to add a passport photo from Ancestry.com. I can't find any copyright notice about old records on the site. There is a box on their site for sharing documents to Twitter, Facebook or Google+ which are all public places, so would it be okay to upload a passport photo of a woman b 1875, d 1974 and her husband (d 1931) and daughter (d1992)? @Wainuiomartian: When was the passport issued, and in what country?   — Jeff G. please ping or talk to me 21:43, 11 April 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: (Not sure if this will work, never done this before) The photo is attached to a US 'Emergency Passport Application' from 1919, included in a set of records on Ancestry called "U.S. Passport Applications, 1795-1925". There is a notice that says "Provided in association with National Archives and Records Administration" and a copyright notice for Ancestry. But at the same time Ancestry encourages users to download and save the document. Ancestry hasn't replied to my enquiry. Wainuiomartian (talk) 20:28, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: The photographer is unidentifiable, and the photo is undated - probably taken in Auckland. The document the photo is attached to was created at the US Consulate-General in Auckland in Aug 1919. Wainuiomartian (talk) 19:31, 19 April 2019 (UTC)

I have spent an hour trying to get as much detail as possible into the images, and I would appreciate if someone helped by adding a sub-category like "Construction in Argostoli Kefalonia" under the category "Construction in Greece". Also, please feel free to add other categories (I am documenting safety hazards to pedestrians in my town: there have been numerous accidents and I needed to upload photos with proper metadata. More will follow, and I intend to gather all the images in a gallery). Thanks! --Saintfevrier (talk) 10:18, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

  • @Saintfevrier: It's actually very easy to create category pages. You can do this analogously to other subcategory pages of Category:Construction in Greece, but first we'll need a Category:Argostoli Kefalonia. I have no context for that and for what its parent categories would be, and no time right now to research where it fits in to the geographic hierarchy. - Jmabel ! talk 15:29, 17 April 2019 (UTC)
  • @Jmabel: thanks so much for your reply! I only just found the time myself to get back to you, this is a crazy period of my life... So Argostoli is the capital of the island of Kefalonia, in the Ionian Islands on the west coast of Greece. There is already a category for the town: (also, looking through the sub-cats I have found at least one I can add to one of the files). Gotta run now, will be back later, thanks again for your help! All the best from Argostoli ;-) --Saintfevrier (talk) 06:41, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Messed up thumbnails with CropTool?

Am I missing a step with CropTool? I cropped the image linked below, and the full-size is good but the thumbnails, both at the bottom of the Wikimedia page and on the Wikipedia article where it's used, are both messed up. They are the previous cropping compressed into the new dimensions... But then if you click on them the full-size version is correct. Did I miss something?

--rimshottalk 20:59, 17 April 2019 (UTC)

License for Picture clicked by self

Dear Team,

I have my friend who is an indian actress, she has clicked a photograph and she wants it to be on her wikipedia page. What kind of license or approval, do i need to use/provide for such images.

Thanks & Regards, Shah.DevangIN — Preceding unsigned comment added by Shah.DevangIN (talk • contribs) 04:26, 18 April 2019‎ (UTC)

  • By far the simplest would be for her to open an account and upload the photo herself as her own work.
  • The next simplest would be for her to put the photo on a site clearly under her control (or a reliable site of an institution such as a production company) that clearly credits the photo to her and explicitly releases it under an appropriate license (I recommend ).
  • If for some reason neither of those is practicable, COM:OTRS explains how she can send an email explicitly licensing a particular photo or designating someone (e.g. you) to upload on her behalf. In either case, it is important to specify a particular license. However, keep in mind that the OTRS team is backlogged by months, so it is likely that the photo will be temporarily deleted before the OTRS team gets around ot it, and then restored when it finally reaches the front of the queue. For that reason, I consider either of the other two approaches preferable. - Jmabel ! talk 06:01, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Can I upload logo of a website from my own account ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Yasin 0695 (talk • contribs) 05:22, 18 April 2019‎ (UTC)

  • Typically not: most logos are copyrighted. It would help a lot if you could indicate what website. Some logos are simple enough to be ineligible for copyright. - Jmabel ! talk 06:03, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

Update old profile

Dylan Sprouse/Actor /model has requested that anyone update his 10 year old profile picture with a more recent picture. I am not sure how to obtain the license necessary to update. Can you please give me basic instructions on what is needed to upload to the commons. I have read everything and it seems very difficult to me. Most of his pictures are used on his social media sites. And may not even have a copyright/license. I can also send him the information so he can update himself, although I believe he has tryed and found it extremely difficult. He asked over 5 million followers and noone has made the change. I am listed as restinggod. New editor Thanks for any help and if you can update it with a good current feel free to. Thanks.. Brian Copeland /restinggod — Preceding unsigned comment added by Restinggod (talk • contribs) 05:42, 18 April 2019‎ (UTC)

  • @Restinggod: You (or whoever) will not want to overwrite the existing picture on Commons: you will want to upload the new photo under a new filename, then change Wikipedia to use the new photo (presuming that by "profile picture" you mean a photo visible on Wikipedia; if you meant something else, please explain further).
  • I have no idea what you mean by "And may not even have a copyright/license." Under the Berne Convention, virtually any recent photograph is inherently copyrighted; there are a handful of exceptions (image so trivial it couldn't be copyrighted, like a black square; any photo by a U.S. government employee taken as part of their duties is always public domain; etc.) but I can't imagine any would apply here. The issue is to have the copyright-holder grant an appropriate license.
  • Unless it is a selfie, it is unlikely that he has photos of himself on which he owns the copyright. Typically, copyright belongs to the photographer, and can only be transferred in writing.
  • By far the easiest way to do this is for someone to take a picture of him and upload it to Commons, so that the photographer and the uploader are the same person.
  • Second easiest: is there someone with a picture of him on Flickr or another similar website who can be convinced to offer a cc-by or cc-by-sa license?
  • There are some other ways to do this but the two I just mentioned are by far the easiest. Is one of those a possibility? If not, then you'll need to explain where you can come up with a free-licensed photo. - Jmabel ! talk 06:18, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

How to upload pictures of famous person to his Wikipedia page, I can get his approval but I cant get the pictures source?

I want to upload some pictures of a Nobel prize laureate, these pictures are taken well known events or places, like the white house, and her majesty Queen Elizabeth.

I have the pictures, and I can get his written approval to use the pictures. is that enough. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Abdallahsw (talk • contribs) 06:37, 18 April 2019‎ (UTC)

  • Copyright does not normally belong to the person depicted in a photograph, it belongs to the photographer. So the subject's permission is not relevant: if the image is copyrighted, what we need is a license from the copyright-holder.
  • On the other hand: you mention the White House. Is there a photo taken by a U.S. government employee in the performance of their duties? If so, that would be public domain PD-USGov. - Jmabel ! talk 07:11, 18 April 2019 (UTC)

These are over 1.5 GB in size, which the system attempted to convert into MP3 and Ogg (as showed in the bottom of the respective page). Showing only a audio file player on page when referenced. First upload, can someone please check if did not make a mistake?

Hi there all,

I just uploaded my first image. It is a photo from a private archive in the US, from which I got permission to use it on Wikipedia.

I think this falls under the 'attribution' tag, if I am not mistaken?

What is weird is that the actual text here " The copyright holder of this file allows anyone to use it for any purpose, provided that the copyright holder is properly attributed. Redistribution, derivative work, commercial use, and all other use is permitted."

is different from what the wiki say this 'attribution'-tag actually means! The text I cite above seems rather to indicate the 'copyright free use' type?

Please let me know if I got something wrong here.

This is picture: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ayn_Rand,_New_York_City,_1943.gif

Hi, i thought this wiki, https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Copyright_tags#Other_free_tags, made a difference between having permission to use it for this purpose, versus having general permission to use it with attribution. But I now think I might be wrong. I am not sure this type of free license is what the copyrightholder is OK with. I will check that. Could you tell me if I did it in the right way? @Jeff G.: Ah, in that case I am pretty sure this is not what they want. • It would help a lot if you would link to a page showing the logo in question.
  • I have no idea where you may have read dass man keine Logos hochladen darf. Could you point to that?
  • Most present-day logos that are complex enough to be eligible for copyright are copyrighted, so uploading Commons would require the same sort of permission you would need for any other copyrighted image. Simple typography and (in most countries) simple colored geometric shapes are ineligible for copyright, or as we sometimes say, "below the threshold" for copyright.
  • Copyrights are distinct from trademarks, which is why we have Trademark. - Jmabel ! talk 00:08, 24 April 2019 (UTC)

The UX for finding appropriate content is a PITA

Searching for content provides really poor UX; for example enter ["Travel clip art"] in the search box given no results except the suggestion I mean "travel clamart" which actually also provides not content. Changing the search to "Travel clipart".

When you do find an suitable image, for example https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sedan-car.svg there is no way to find similar images or other images in the same category. — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 185.6.155.248 (talk) 10:43, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

I can't help with the searching, but you can find other images in the same category by scrolling to the bottom of the image page where there's a box labelled "Categories". On File:Sedan-car.svg that includes Category:SVG profile drawings of automobiles for images in a similar style. --bjh21 (talk) 11:21, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
Based on the link you provided, you've searched specifically for categories containing the words "travel" and "clipart". There are no such categories. (Since clip art or clipart isn't really a well-defined or meaningful term distinct from illustrations in general, Category:Clip art redirects to Category:Illustrations.) If you deselect "Categories" to search all content or if you search specifically for files containing those words in the file description, you might get more relevant results. LX (talk, contribs) 14:54, 25 April 2019 (UTC)
The search function is notoriously bad. I recommend not using it at all, and instead use google image search with site:commons.wikimedia.org. GMGtalk 14:57, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Die Website habe ich beim Hochladen angegeben. Dort steht: Permalink: http://www.zeno.org/nid/20001910426 Lizenz: Gemeinfrei

--Uwca (talk) 20:59, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

Hier müsste man noch herausfinden, ob das Bild schon vor 1924 veröffentlicht wurde, damit es auch in den USA gemeinfrei ist. Leider gibt Zeno dazu keine Auskunft. De728631 (talk) 21:11, 25 April 2019 (UTC)

hello Wikipedia i am trying to release my image of lathinies flag which is a micro nation. apparently its not my image and my work.

Hey User:Mrlol12324. You would probably be in the best position to determine whether it is your own work or not, since you should probably fairly well know whether you created it, or copied it from somewhere else. However, since this is a flag for a micronation, that as far as I can tell, is indistinguishable from a hoax, I'm not sure it is within the scope of the project. The appropriate place for content such as that is probably the Micro Nation Wiki, which is not affiliated with Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. GMGtalk 20:19, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

"With a commons license am I protected from unsolicited commercial use and absolved from any subsequent reuse issues?"

Hello, Everyone,

A photographer who I am helping with three contributions asked this question with respect to Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0):

"With a commons license am I protected from unsolicited commercial use and absolved from any subsequent reuse issues?"

Can someone please provide feedback I can forward to him?

1987atomheartbrother (talk) 19:56, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

Hey 1987atomheartbrother. If the photographer licenses their work under CCBYSA 3.0, then they may also be used for commercial purposes so long as the terms of the license, such as the requirement for attribution, are complied with. GMGtalk 20:05, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
GMG, thank you for your quick response. 1987atomheartbrother (talk) 20:33, 26 April 2019 (UTC)

"In" or "of" in categories (related to Nature reserves)

So, when looking into Category:Nature reserves of Sweden by municipality there is a lot of ambivalence related to the use of "in" or "of". From Category:Nature reserves by country, it seems like "in" is the proper use. What is right in this specific case, and are there any rules about this in general? //moralist (talk) 08:36, 23 April 2019 (UTC)

Yes, "in" is correct English grammar. There's far too many categories that use "of" wrongly, unfortunately. - MPF (talk) 13:36, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

Hermann Goering picture request

Hi, I'm looking for a picture of Hermann Goering. I've checked commons and all the international wikis but unfortunately there is nothing completely suitable. The pictures range from the smiling bumpkin on en.wiki, bemused on es.wiki, to the enraged I just murdered someone on fr.wiki. As a major criminal there are plenty of pictures "out there" but I can't access them. The picture needs to be high quality, show him in World War II era and have a neutral expression. Can anyone help? Szzuk (talk) 08:11, 27 April 2019 (UTC)

You may want to check Category:Hermann Göring in 1940 and similar categories of Göring by year. Examples:
De728631 (talk) 11:06, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
Thank you for your reply. I have seen those, but they aren't quite what I'm looking for. I was enquiring about likely places on the internet where I could find a new picture to upload here. Szzuk (talk) 18:16, 27 April 2019 (UTC)
Oh, I see. Well, I think chances are high that most images of the man that are available have already been uploaded at Commons. E.g. all items from the German Federal Archives are already here. And what comes up in a Google search that is not yet at Commons appears to be still copyrighted. De728631 (talk) 10:52, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Can I upload logo of Slza and Hra o trůny?

Hi, I need help. I don't know, if I can upload 2 files to Commons. Can someone please help? Here is talk page. Thanks! --Patriccck (talk) 12:34, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

Hra o trůny = Game of Thrones. The full official logo with background graphics and such is copyrighted and non-free, so it cannot be uploaded. But we do have a text-only version at Commons which is already in use at the Czech Wikipedia article. The Czech logo could be problematic though because the requirement for copyright protection in Czechia is "a unique outcome of the creative activity of the author" which might be the case here.
As to Slza, the logo of this band is simple enough to be uploaded here with PD-textlogo as a licence. De728631 (talk) 12:42, 28 April 2019 (UTC)
@De728631: Can be uploaded logo of Hra o trůny without background? Is this, this and this OK? I don´t know date of first publish of file, so I add random date, is it OK? --Patriccck (talk) 12:40, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
The Slza logos are ok. I just removed the random date entries, because if you don't know the date, you don't have to add one. I'm sorry about Hra o trůny though. I was referring to the logo without background as possible copyrighted, because the letters here are quite elaborate and artistic. The official "background" would be in the English logo like this. So both versions are not ok in my opinion. De728631 (talk) 17:59, 29 April 2019 (UTC)
Thanks for the help! --Patriccck (talk) 20:22, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Is there a reason "Lines" is capitalized?

Please look at Category:Railway Lines of Taiwan Railway Administration, the capital letter “L” in “Lines" should be changed to lowercase letter "l."--Kai3952 (talk) 17:52, 28 April 2019 (UTC)

--JohnRapture (talk) 12:55, 29 April 2019 (UTC)

Hey John. Unfortunately, we cannot simply add photos taken from online, even if we provide links to the source. Photographs are covered by copyright laws and are the intellectual property of their creator. If we can identify the creator, and they are willing to release their property under a free license then we can use it accordingly. If we cannot, or they will not, then we cannot use the photograph, and we will have to use the best quality free image available instead, even if that means its lower quality then what we would like to use. HEy DTdeBruijn. Your article on the Dutch Wikipedia is located here, where it has been nominated for deletion due to the fact that it does not contain any references to published sources for the information it contains. If you can provide references to things like newspapers, magazines and books that have been published about the subject, you should add them. duplicated videos

They were rendered from the same source. Could someone please help determine which one is better and should be kept?--Roy17 (talk) 17:54, 16 April 2019 (UTC)

I think we can keep the first one. The source seems to be muted so we don't really need an audio track. Could someone with technical knowledge please confirm the audio is unnecessary?--Roy17 (talk) 15:08, 26 April 2019 (UTC)
Roy, add Duplicate to the second video and use the second template parameter for explanation. I think that the sources give different creation dates could be slightly difficult. In addition: Apparently you are a license reviewer, will you review the first video? — Speravir – 00:11, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

School's image removed due to copyrights

I am from my school's computer society, I recently updated my school's Wikipedia article with an image of our school's main building and that image was taken down as the same picture was used in our school's Facebook page which is also managed by us. How can I use this picture? Sahan0710 (talk) 10:52, 30 April 2019 (UTC)

@Sahan0710: Thank you for your question. Please send a permission email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org (or a language specific email address) in accordance to the instructions mentioned in OTRS. You may want to COM:relgen to generate a permission email, yet it is important to remind you that please notify the photographer to send the email, as the photographer is the person who has the legal authority to give out a permission, and failing to do so may delay the permission process. After the email is sent, please be patient and wait for reply from us OTRS volunteers, and we would undelete the image after the permission email is received. Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions, thank you.

VsZett (talk) 10:33, 28 April 2019 (UTC) VsZett

— Preceding unsigned comment added by VsZett (talk • contribs) 03:55, 1 May 2019 (UTC) Nochmals sorry - hab nicht unterschrieben.VsZett (talk) 20:40, 3 May 2019 (UTC)

— Speravir – 00:19, 7 May 2019 (UTC)
VsZett, gibt’s dich noch? Dieser Thread war durch einen Vandalen vorübergehend gelöscht worden, ist aber, wie zu sehen ist, wieder hergestellt worden. — Speravir – 00:46, 12 May 2019 (UTC)
