Purr Lexus - The most beautiful girl in the world[edit]

DOB 6/18/1996 - DOD 1/5/2015 - 9:28am. Rest in Peace little girl.

Purr Lexus a Perfect Persian Kitty 18 years of age.

I hope no one minds. I would like to tell the story of my little girl Purr Lexus. I had spent the 1995 football season with the SF 49ers. The project was over and I moved back to So Cal. My salt water fish tank had broken and I was forced to give/trade for credit my sea life at Sand Bar pets. A year later, a young lady I was with convinced me that my home, over the San Clemente pier, "needed a kitty". I tried to resist and ended up at that same pet store a few hours later. I saw a lot of domestic cats and, in a special cage right up front were 2 little fuzz balls. I opened the door and said to myself, lets see if either of these two have any love. In seconds she had climbed into my hand curled up and just started purring like no cat I have ever seen. I was smitten and asked about the price and my pending credit. Well she was a pure bread 900 dollar kitty, trying to put her down she would have nothing to do with it. I paid the balance and she went home in my lap, just the way she left us today purring all the way. The last few weeks have been hard, it was clear she was not doing well and when she stopped eating Friday, I knew it was time for her to go. We spent most of the weekend just cuddling and with her on my chest. She had a extremely advanced cancer and there was no hope for any type of recovery. Her entire life she had know nothing other then love and pampering, I treated her like the princess she was and always will be to me. She out lived many of my friends and family and I know that her pain is over, and she departed this world, in my hands just the way she came to me. Nothing but love to her final moments. I can not say that I have ever had anything for 20 years, much less a sweetheart like her. Good bye girl your forever a giant piece of my heart.

= 2 kitties in 6 months[edit]

My other meow, "Demetri" was attacked and killed by Coyote in Mid July. I really miss them. I miss you both more then words can discribe.... :(

A beer for you![edit]

Adding GPS[edit]

WPPilot, could you add the GPS data to your photo of San Joaquin Hills? Where exactly in the air was it taken? If you look in the lower left hand corner of the photo you can see what pilots refer to as Signal Peak, this is a inbound waypoint for pilots approaching John Wayne airport, altitude is apox 3000 at this waypoint. My flight path was west of the 73, based upon the photos details and the San Joaquin resevior is seen as well. 33.61798 -117.82296 --WPPilot (talk) 16:34, 23 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Aerial photos and Balboa Island street[edit]

Hello, I enjoy looking at your OC photos, especially aerial ones! :) I've created a new category called Category:Aerial photographs of Orange County, California. It would be great if you could use it for your new uploads. BTW, I have a question about File:Balboa Island Main Street photo D Ramey Logan.jpg. Isn't this "Marine Avenue" on Balboa Island? Balboa Peninsula has a "Main Street", but Balboa Island doesn't. Judging from some of the shops, it looks like Marine Avenue. Could you clarify? I've been trying to reorganize places and streets in L.A. and Orange Counties. Your input would really help. Thanks in advance. --Nandaro (talk) 16:53, 31 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes that is Marine Avenue, thatnks for the heads up as well as making the category. --WPPilot (talk) 19:20, 31 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Nice photos[edit]

Hi there mate, I'm having a look at some of your aviation photos, very nice additions to here on Commons. I look forward to seeing even more from you in the future :)

One thing I did want to ask you is when you upload photos in the future, e.g. File:Embraer Phenom 100 photo D Ramey Logan.jpg could you include in the description which airport you took the photo at; this way we can include photos in the airport categories as well.

Keep up the great work! Cheers, russavia (talk) 00:05, 4 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here is the cutest possible kitten for you

Hi WPPilot: I read about Purr Lexus today and wanted to send my condolences. I lost my old girl this year too and I know that she is still with me and gone too... it's very hard and I wanted to offer you my sympathy. Looking through your gallery was amazing. You have gorgeous photos. I really enjoyed looking at them; what an eye! Also, I appreciated the saga about the 40footyacht, the cellphone and the velcro; what an amazing story - sounds like a lot of fun - and totally something an awesome photographer would do with hours to spare!! Please let me know if I can be of any small service to you here on Commons? Cheers! Ellin Beltz (talk) 01:11, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

File:Douglas DC 3 cockpit photo D Ramey Logan.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

YSSYguy (talk) 21:48, 17 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

G'day, and apologies for the nomination; I Googled "D Ramey Logan" after the nom and a bunch of Commons files came up, which led me to realize the true situation. However, the cockpit is misidentified; if I had to put money on it I would say it is a DC-4 cockpit. Again, my apologies. Cheers YSSYguy (talk) 22:13, 17 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@WPPilot, I have closed out this deletion nomination as spurious.
@ YSSYguy, Please take more time before nominating for deletion images from featured photographers with kazillion uploads. Use of your photos[edit]

Hey Pilot, I've got a project I have to do for my U.S History class. And I need to find some photos of artifacts that represent the 1920's culture. Do you mind if I use one of your photos? Specifically one of the photos you have of buildings. Thanks, Skate Shady (talk) 16:49, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Everyone is more then welcome to use them. I donate them, to the site for that reason. I use what is know as CC 4 attribution required, so in summary you only need to attribute the photo, to me, i.e. "Photo D Ramey Logan/WPPilot, Wikipedia commons" --WPPilot (talk) 16:53, 31 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

NOMINTAION Featured picture candidates/File: Dublin Stephen's Green-44.jpg[edit]

Hey WPPilot,

thanks for the feddback. Can i also give some information for the discussion? Or is the discussion only for "special" people? The usability of wikimedia commons is not so easy.... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dronepicr (talk • contribs)

You are welcome. First always sign your name to your posts, you can do that by using the "Pen" button at the top of the edit box to insert 2 bars and 4 tildies (- - ~ ~ ~ ~ with no spaces) and please do give feedback on your nomination. IMHO you might want to consider what Colin mentioned in nominating the 6 mega pox Alt too. That is a great pic, well done. Keep flying, and use the "modes" on your app to get bracketed photos. Fly to your spot and then hover, using your DJI Go you can do a few shots with a number of shutter and aperture combinations, then pick the best one to upload here. Fly in calm conditions as the gimbal creates a jiggling effect and some of the comments on your nomination are with regard to that minor defect in the photo. Please feel free if you would like any further guidance, I am considering starting a group for Drone pilots that we can share our experiences and provide further guidance. LMK if you care to assist. Cheers!--WPPilot (talk) 16:35, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Featurable photo?[edit]

Hi, Don. I've looked through some of the photos on your user page. I think this one, because it has the reflections on top and the actual scenery on the bottom, is interesting and unusual and might get the votes for a feature if nominated. But before it's nominated, please remove one dust spot above the left side of the building reflection, to the left of the upper reaches of the tree's reflection.

All the best,

Ikan Kekek (talk) 13:53, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Well thank you, I really like that photo as well. I will retouch the dust later today after the airshow and upload it if you care to nominate it that would be wonderful. Cheers: --WPPilot (talk) 16:55, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I might not be able to nominate it for some time but would expect to support it if it's nominated. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 23:24, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Do give me a ping when you've had a chance to edit it, though. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:56, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I will do it in just a few moments. --WPPilot (talk) 07:20, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ikan Kekek it is uploaded, I am not as experienced in Photoshop as I am in Premiere, so please LMK your thoughts. I am really glad that you picked that photo, it is one of my personal fav's, good choice. Cheers! --WPPilot (talk) 11:21, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm seeing a couple more dust spots now. They're very light and under the middle of the three trees and the break between that one and the one further right. The one further right is a lot harder to see. And I'm noticing another one now. It's right near the top margin, between the reflections of the furthest right and middle tree. If there are others, I don't have the best eagle eye for them, but check and see if you can find more. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 19:40, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Reflections of Newport Beach by D Ramey Logan
Ikan If you care to hit them yourself please feel free, then you would be a contributor to the nomination, I for one think that would be cool. If you do not have photoshop nbd, let me open it back up here and lets find that dust, shall we.... I have a 50 inch 4k monitor that is over 2x23 in 4k so I can blow this up real large, I just might need more direction on finding them, thank you.. :) --WPPilot (talk) 19:46, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ikan I just found them, standby please. --WPPilot (talk) 19:48, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ikan there ya go, I think that covered it. I was not able to locate the one you mentioned between the reflection trees but I might have got it, LMK. --WPPilot (talk) 19:57, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
There might be one or two more, but if so, they're so light that it's like chasing phantoms. I'm satisfied. If anyone finds more during the nomination, they should point them out. Thanks, Don. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 06:58, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Q: Do you think that I should crop the "bottom" so that it is the same as the top (in distance from tree to top of photo)? --WPPilot (talk) 12:23, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe. If you'd like to do so, I will hold off on nominating 2 photos (nominate 1 only), in order to be able to nominate an edited version of this. Let me know by pinging me or posting to my user talk page if you crop it, and if so, when you've done so. -- Ikan Kekek (talk) 09:00, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I will make a alt and we can let the voters decide. Busy day of flying today, will post it tonight... --WPPilot (talk) 14:38, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Lenses[edit]

Thanks for your comment on Ikan's page. :) I moved here since I think it might be rude to use his talk page as a general forum even if things sometimes turn out that way. Funny you should mention the Zeiss lens. I never want to go anywhere without a camera since you never know what you may stumble upon, so I also have a small pocket camera to keep in my jacket or handbag. I chose a little Sony DSC-RX100 which also has a 1' sensor and sports a Zeiss lens. I've bagged many of my FPs with that one (see User:W.carter/Featured pictures) since it is best to have a camera handy when a picture-worthy scene suddenly appears and that makes up for the somewhat lesser detail. Cheers, cart-Talk 08:38, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User:W.carter Thanks for moving the convo over here, I did not mean to hijack his talk for our conversation and had the same thought as you... Most of the Studio production lenses are all Zeiss, but these films lenses run in the 6 figure range so I am well aware of the value of there Zeiss optics. I too have a small Leica that I bought for the Zeiss but I keep cracking the rear viewfinder, (its out being fixed again) but I was really impressed with the pics from its Zeiss 2.8 optics in a pocket camera. For a acquiring production stills it's perfect as it has a carry case on my tool belt that does not get in the way yet now that I have the GH 4 the Leica might see a bit less use.
I don't know how much video you shoot, but the new: Rokinon Xeen 14, 24, 35, 50, 85mm Cine Lens, have a fantastic optical set that is actually affordable to a small film company. The lenses are almost as nice as the Zeiss at about 10 cents on the dollar of retail but these "T" stop-less lenses are too difficult for any still photography, I have tried :). My next camera was going to be a high speed Arri or the new Red but the Hasselblad A5D-50c fits on the Matrice 600, a heavy lifting drone that I have had a lot of calls for on the set and in production work so it looks like that might be my next Medium Format Mirrorless Still Digital Camera/Aerial Platform. A 50mm chip is going to create some breathtaking photos. Someday...The Matrice 600 was ordered by the production company and takes like 3 weeks to build so I am looking forward to learning how to fly yet another airborne camera soon... --WPPilot (talk) 22:56, 27 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dji inspire 1 professional, FAA registration N148FD

this is what I fly on the set now. It has a wonderful MFT camera and can accomidate a number of lenses, but its a bit shaky when it comes to longer 45mm or further unless you do no movement on the camera itself and simply fly the shot. On the other hand the 45mm does breath taking stills with the same MFT lenses the GH 4 uses. --WPPilot (talk) 07:31, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Aha! I've always wondered what kind of rig accommodates a "normal" camera. I've only seen those with little action cameras. I can imagine that a longer lens would seriously alter the aerodynamics and steering capabilities. I used to fly RC planes when I was a little girl, but that's as far as my flying experience goes. ;) I don't shoot any video. Well, at least not things that would be suitable for a wider audience. Doing that of some quality also requires a bit more editing and computer power than I can do right now. It's one of those later-when-I-retire-projects. We all have our "someday..." plans. :) Yes, the Zeiss lenses cost a bundle, I could only get this since it was relatively small and set in a not too expensive camera. I paid about $450 for it. I think I got good value for that money. cart-Talk 08:43, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That is a great value for the money, its all about the glass, This is a mid level bird. I can fly TV and limited Film shoots with it, but the quality is not really near that of a Red or Arri high speed film camera. The ability to shoot in 6k @ 120fps seems to be what the industry wants these days and I aim to please. The Matrice 600 the studio just ordered is a big bird, with the 33 pound payload it can carry a small truck. This Inspire Pro only accommodates like 5 lenses and well I already have the all. The Matrice can fly the GH 4 with ANY lens on it, you just have to balance the whole thing before it takes off. I am building it with A3 Pro and D-RTK GNSS so that it flies lie I need it to... I will share photos when it gets here. I did just receive conformation from Nikon that the new NIKON 4k 360 camera was at long last shipped and am expecting in on Tuesday, It will be interesting to see if the files play here, or someone needs to jump into a SDK and make them work. I can look into it, once I load a picture or two but I am rusty on Wiki syntax, so we need to find some code junkie. I know these files are not going to play natively. O will do some test files as soon as it gets here and we will se just what has to be done. I want to hang it, on a tether (off the bottom of the drone) and fly it down the harbor at about 30 feet over the water, What a spectacular shot that will be.I have a feeling that some browsers will run it, and others will not support it, we will see.--WPPilot (talk) 09:01, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

That just-over-the-surface footage would be great to see! Kind'a risky too, so be sure the winds are stabile and have a boat ready in case the whole thing takes a dive. I took the liberty of nominating your boat pic for QI just to get things rolling. I take it you saw Colin's comment on Ikan's talk page. :) cart-Talk 09:30, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I had not, that was nice of you thank you. --WPPilot (talk) 10:40, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

FoP issues[edit]

That's fine; I had only raised the issue to explain my oppose to what was otherwise a nice photo. FoP is a concept that most of us Commons regulars know very well (as we often have to sort out different countries' copyright laws on this), but most of the general photographing public does not. I forget sometimes it's necessary to explain it; I had my own ride awakening years ago with a picture I took that illustrated The Sphere (which is any case overstuffed with more images than the English Wikipedia's fair-use policy allows; to say nothing of the three Commons categories associated with it, from which we will probably have to delete just about every picture save those of the sculpture amid the WTC rubble since they don't focus exclusively on it).

Even now I get caught unawares by this. I took some pictures of the Pirelli Tower in Milan this summer when I was there for a few days before Wikimania; when I uploaded them here I had forgotten that Italy allows no FoP whatsoever, and apparently that building is still under the original architect's copyright as he has not been dead for long enough. So they got deleted, I put them on my Flickr stream instead as a protest not against Commons deletion policies but Italian copyright law, and one of them was good enough that King of Hearts suggested I upload it to the English Wikipedia (it's actually fine as a free image in the US, per those tags) because it was a lot better than the picture we had been using in the article on the building.

That's why I took this picture on a trip to Germany for a Wikimedia chapters conference in 2009 when I saw some sculptures in a public place near the U-Bahn station; I knew we needed something better than a map to illustrate that article and now it's one of the most widely used pictures across projects I've taken.

Basically, the idea with three-dimensional art, usually sculptures but it can just as easily be applied to lighting displays, is that the artist or designer has already made the photographer's creative choices (well, maybe they actually didn't but they theoretically could have, and that's what counts) for them, so it can only be a derivative work. Since this basically means telling a lot of people that even they took the picture they can't copyright it no matter how much they feel it's "theirs", yeah, that's not an easy pill to swallow.

I am sorry if you feel I'm being Scroogelike . I actually have been thinking for a while of initiating a deletion request for all those pictures of Christmas lights in the US (save those on federal government buildings, or otherwise paid for by the federal government because federal government work is automatically in the public domain ... if anyone can find some and shoot it we should have it), and France, and Italy and every other country where it could be argued that FoP does not cover them. Just to start the conversation; being a party-pooper like this is sometimes the best way to change things. Maybe it would be better done in the summer ...

See, also, Category:Eiffel Tower at night, where there's a discussion of this issue that I find relevant to Christmas lights, with xlinks, right at the top of the page.

For this reason, while I have photographed a few of the many displays around me this time of year, I have never uploaded (of course, my plan would be to get permission from the homeowners and then send it to OTRS when uploading, as per procedure). In an ideal world people would post copyright notices out front, or even the CC logo. Maybe we could promote that.

Still, though, I kind of like the idea of people monetizing their Christmas lighting displays this way (Newspapers at least should attribute the homeowner in the cutline; as a former newspaper journalist it pains me to see how little local newspaper editors truly understand copyright, sometimes even to the point where they think they can just get away with using anyone's work if they're "small" enough. I have seen quite a few of my images published without attribution even to Wikipedia (which is insufficient legally under CC, but still shows you were trying to do the right thing). People invest hours of their time (sometimes) in putting them up, spend quite a bit on the lights and other decorations, and incur high electric bills because of it. Then some editor sends a photographer out, who gets a nice big pic on the front page that sells papers, generates clicks on the paper's website, thus allowing them to sell more ads, and what does the homeowner who invested all this money and work get from that? At some point people will realize they're getting played ... Daniel Case (talk) 06:29, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Daniel Case I don't feel like you’re being Scroogelike just having some fun with video's I have not seen since I was a kid.. I understand your point, but really doubt it will gain any traction as we have generations of humans all over the world that have been doing this for generations and never in the history of any country has anyone ever filed a lawsuit or requested money for any creative light scheme, on a home or much less in a public event like the Light Parade for holiday lights. If you know of one please share it, but I could not find one and I have access to court records in US federal courts. I really doubt that Wiki commons is going to be a "trend setter" much less create a legal precedent that establishes a principle or rule, as you describe above. It would invite a invasion of privacy (what, knock on the door with a release form and your check book in hand, if you photo the house, for every house on the block, how long do you think people will tolerate that?). In so far as the light parade, its participants PAY to be in a public event, on public waterways in an event designed for the public that have only 1 requirement, your boat MUST have Christmas Light's to participate. So without any real, legal foundation, and a history that is far older then us behind it, I am willing to bet it never happens in any country, ever... Even in Who'sville! I do hope you took the videos with the smile that accompanies them. Cheers: --Don (talk) 19:58, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Some holiday joy[edit]

Since 1959, it is a Swedish tradition to (at 3 pm) watch Donald Duck and other Disney cartoons on TV. The most appreciated part is about Donald as bird photographer in Clown of the Jungle. I think most users at FPC can relate to the frustrated Donald (especially the parrot scene), which is why I'm sharing it with you. Happy Holiday! --cart-Talk 15:13, 24 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A question for little old me?[edit]

I would also like to thank you for uploading the film, as well as File:BBC Beach Front.jpg. I like the photo, but its resolution is quite low (614 × 393 pixels, file size: 69 KB); would you please consider overwriting it with a high resolution image?   — Jeff G. ツ 19:02, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
