Replacing a template

Hi Siebrand,
Do you know any bot who can replace licencetemplates? (I had a look at the page of CommonsDelinker, but it seems that it can'T do that job so far).
thx for info --D-Kuru (talk) 13:08, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

SieBot can do it when I tell it to. What's the precise request? Siebrand 08:00, 20 March 2009 (UTC)
As you may know some user replace the GFDL 1.2+ licence with the 1.2-only tag for their images. Some of them have a own licence in their usernamespace. User as Fir0002[1] and Muhammad Mahdi Karim[2] (and of course some more) just changed their licences on their personal licencetemplates from 1.2+ to 1.2-only. Even nowhere is written that that isn't allowed you can still use it under 1.2+ because they've once published under the permission to do so. I would like to move all (old) 1.2+ images to a new template so that they can they have the correct licence again. Changing the licence by manually would take a lot of time so I would like to use the bot for that job.
You said "SieBot can do it when I tell it to.". Are you the only one who is allowed/able to tell SieBot to change templates? I don't want to occupy/waste your time with a dozen (or much more I don't know it so far) requests. If you prefer that you command SieBot so that you can co-check my operations/suggestions I can make a list (which would be expanded from time to time) of usernamespace licencetemplates which should be moved.
--D-Kuru (talk) 00:24, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
If you make clear "replace this template with that template for reason" requests, I'll put the bot to work. Siebrand 18:46, 21 March 2009 (UTC)
Please replace {{Cc-by-sa-2.5-de}} with {{Cc-by-sa-2.5}}. Reason= Per http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.5/de/ there is no CC-BY-SA-2.5-DE. Rght now Cc-by-sa-2.5-de is a redirect to Cc-by-sa-2.5 Thanks --D-Kuru (talk) 23:42, 24 March 2009 (UTC)
Running. Siebrand 00:17, 25 March 2009 (UTC)
On Commons:Administrators'_noticeboard#Template:Cc-by-sa-all I suggested that {{Cc-by-sa-all}} is reverted to the old message "This file is licensed under all Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike Licenses [...] and all future versions issued by the Creative Commons.". If you don't have any other idea (or comment, suggestion or whatever) please move {{Cc-by-sa-all}} to {{Cc-by-sa-3.0,2.5,2.0,1.0}} --D-Kuru (talk) 14:31, 26 March 2009 (UTC)
Not making this change just yet. Very few users showed interest in the topic, and there does not appear to be consensus on the course of action yet. Another thing, can you please create a new topic for every request? It will keep my talk page and later on the archives tidy. Cheers! Siebrand 21:49, 26 March 2009 (UTC)

Categories relating to the Australian state of Victoria

Hi Siebrand. Were the changes SieBot is making to categories relating to the Australian state of Victoria actually discussed anywhere? If not (or even if so), where can I appeal this decision that has made a simple naming system more complex than it needs to be? I did assume that someone prepared to rename sizeable categories such as these might consider discussing proposed changes first with the creator and/or main contributors to the categories. Thanks, Mattinbgn/talk 10:06, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

Hi. Could you get your bot to move all the images currently in Category:Panoramic of Mountains to Category:Panoramics of mountains? The new category is more in line with naming conventions. Thanks. RedWolf (talk) 16:36, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Mistaken name

I uploaded an image from flickr today and forgot to change the file name. The file name in question is [File:Nested.jpg] The one that I want is an image of a forested valley and hills in Pennsylvania. The other is of some random woman. Could you change the name of one of them for me or just delete my upload and I'll do it over. Thanks. Dincher (talk) 15:40, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Your bot is working too fast ;-)

Your bot is causing itself version conflicts. See e.g. [3] where it first changed one category and when it changed the second it changed the first one back by taking the version before the first bot edit. -- Cecil (talk) 12:39, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

See User_talk:Siebrand/Archive13#SieBot_and_its_moving_mistakes --Foroa (talk) 13:39, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
Not certain that is avoidable with the current way the whole bot framework works with simultaneous processes. Should be easily fixable by just repeating the commands, I think. Siebrand 23:57, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Your bot is deleting many pictures

Siebrand 10:17, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker problems on the English Wikipedia.

Greetings. I am a member of the Bot Approvals Group on the English Wikipedia. Thank you for maintaining the User:CommonsDelinker bot.

It has come to our attention that your bot has a bug: when it removes images, it does not remove any invisible characters (such as the left-to-right mark character) on either side of the image at the same time. When the image was used in a complex template, this leaves the template in a broken state that is very difficult for human editors to identify and repair. Example. This could be fixed by adding such invisible characters to the regular expression used by your bot.

w:en:User:Gimmetrow says that he has contacted you on several occasions regarding this, but the situation has not been corrected. It was also discussed at the Bot Approval Group here, and more recently on the English Wikipedia's Administrator Noticeboard here. Many are saying the bot should be blocked unless this error is corrected.

If you are willing and able to fix this, please let us know here. Thanks, Quadell (talk) 12:54, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

P.S. If you want to contact me directly, please do so on my English Wikipedia talk page.

Gimmetrow demanded a fix threatening to block the bot several times. The bot removes all references to a certain image, nothing else. The template shouldn't contain these control characters in the first place. Multichill (talk) 13:48, 29 April 2009 (UTC)
I understand your point of view. I'm just letting you know, the bot will probably blocked on en.wiki and replaced locally with a new bot that removes these characters at the same time, unless this change is made. Quadell (talk) 15:01, 29 April 2009 (UTC)

Issue appears to have been fixed. Siebrand 15:50, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi George. On Commons we have a policy that category names are always in English. Gallery names can be in any language. Because I intended to find and tag category names that were named incorrectly, I only tagged them so far, and have not yet taken the time to find someone to provide English names for them. Hello Siebrand,
could just explain me why you move all uncategorized Berlin images to Category:History of Berlin? Request for mediation

Hello, User:Foroa has recently done some quite controversial cat moves through operating your Siebot at User talk:CommonsDelinker/commands‎. I am asking you for mediation in the hope to settle the matter in an amicable atmosphere, so that there is no need for an official request for removing the said user from operating the bot further. Foroa has shown a lack of knowledge of the subjects he moved or refused to move, combined with an increasingly irritating bossy behaviour. I will make it short here (but I am willing to prepare a lengthy and detailed case for an official request, to be sure): Specifically, he has removed several times my requested moves for several Roman bridges, but, when directly asked to give his reasons, displays a lack of actual knowledge about the category naming scheme for bridges. I gave a detailed point by point refutation of his views there. A similar inconsistent argumentation line is also evident at Category talk:South Tyrol, where it is easy to see that his proposed solution actually results in less incoherence both vis-a-vis other the naming system of other states as of the South Tyrol category. But worst of all, he moves categories against the explicit consensus of the community, scolding other users' opinions as "tendentious" and demanding them to 'not challenge him'. I feel this is not the right behaviour for a user entrusted with the bot, especially since, in all three topics, he hardly engages in discussions about his proposed moves. Regards Gun Powder Ma (talk) 22:22, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

A similar complaint was filed by Gryffindor here where I added my 2 cents to it. --AFBorchert (talk) 22:52, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
Your suggestion to take the matter to the here is much appreciated, but without Siebrand nor Foroa as yet taking to the trouble to reply to even reply to the two requests, it is difficult to see about what exactly we should talk there. I am still for an informal, quick and amicable solution, but if this is not possible, it is hard to see how an official request for removing Foroa from operating the bot further can be avoided.
I have written about a third of all WP.EN articles on Roman bridges, uploaded a heap of pictures of those bridges, and reordered the whole Commnos category on Ancient Roman bridges, and I am really not in the mood to let this work be compromised by some user who feels he does not need to justify his actions on delinkers.
I can prove the reasonability of all my requested moves (but, seeing the difficulty of naming some bridges, I am nonetheless prepared to look for common ground), and I will do so certainly in an official request if no willingness to discuss Foroa's recent moves exist. Regards Gun Powder Ma (talk) 20:44, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
Disputes about categories and naming them are of all times. Sometimes what you want happens, sometimes it doesn't. Getting completely worked up about it rarely helps. At the moment I do not have the time to look into this case, flesh it out completely, interview involved parties, and suggest a way to resolve this. In general no category move can't be undone by moving it the other way, so no *real* harm is done. Chill, take distance, and reevaluate the case, trying to separate your feelings and the facts. I have no idea what this dispute is actually about. Look up similar named category schemes, and pick one. FYI: Tiberius_bridge_in_Rimini does not look like a category name following the (possibly unwritten) conventions I know. Cheers! Siebrand 21:07, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
To me neither, so I wonder, too, why my request for moving the name has been declined three times by Foroa. He wants the name of bridges separated by comma from the place name (like "Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco"), but the vast majority in Commons, as well as the iron rule in WP.EN, is the convention "Golden Gate Bridge (San Francisco)". Nearly all Ancient Roman bridges are named that way at Commons, so why is it so difficult for Foroa to just rename them accordingly? Gun Powder Ma (talk) 21:18, 5 May 2009 (UTC)
So far, I replied thoroughly on all discussions engaged by Gun Powder Ma scattered over the various category discussion pages and my talk pages. I have no more arguments to add and the here gives an appreciation from a third party. I have nothing more to add to my position and I have seen no new elements popping up. --Foroa (talk) 06:48, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

I have no idea. Could it be that those files are used as "Media:" instead of "File:"? If so, i think that is the cause. Siebrand 17:35, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
That might be more in-depth Mediawiki than I can help with. I thought it might have been a timing problem since it also missed a couple subcategory moves, but I was able to change the order of the move cat's and get the bot to find those (see this followed by this). I could not get it to move those .ogg files though. Wknight94 talk 18:01, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Ah, I was confused. I thought you wanted to replace a.ogg by b.ogg in all Wikimedia projects, but you meant something else. Interesting. I'll have to look into that a little further. Cheers! Siebrand 21:24, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Woops, my mistake. I hadn't considered that you could read it that way. Sorry.... Wknight94 talk 21:27, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
I confirm, sound and video files are not moved by Siebot, so I move them manually, or put a redirect on the source category which eventually moves them. See User_talk:Siebrand/Archive14#Your_bot_is_working_too_fast_.3B-.29 for the other problem. --Foroa (talk) 22:43, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Why you are deleted and renamed the category Category:Canyons of Kamenice? The new name Category:Canyons in Kamenice is nonsensical. I think, a canyon cannot be "in" a river – more to the contrary, a river is in canyons. --ŠJů (talk) 23:05, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

All 'Canyons of X' categories were named consistently[11]. It is not unthinkable that one of the renamed was out of context. Siebrand 08:45, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
As you can see, all other cases are categories of canyons in some specific area (in some country or state). Kamenice River isn't a state nor a country, these are incomparable names. Please, read once more my remark which you are answer. Kamnitzklamm or Soutěsky Kamenice cannot be translated as "Canyons of Kamenice", that's an absolute nonsense. --ŠJů (talk) 11:29, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Category:Waterfalls in Dierovy potok is just a similar case. --ŠJů (talk) 01:04, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

Removal of Flags

Hoi Siebrand, your bot removes obsolete versions of flags without replacing them. The correct version could have been found here. The simple removal leaves holes in articles. Isn't replacing the normal procedure instead of plain removal? Best regards, --Gereon K. (talk) 12:23, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Removal of COAs

Following the deletion of dozens of COAs, this bot has removed redlinks from hundred of articles (which is of course what it was supposed to do). The problem comes as hundreds of articles in en.wikipedia now have to be fixed, but there's no way to track which articles lost their coa images. Is there anyway 1) a tag could be added to the talk pages which need a new coa image? or 2) a human readable log could be posted to the national projects and/or wikiproject Nations saying which articles what national coa's were removed from?

Baring this, it would seem reasonable to rollback the last 24 hours of delinkings so folks on the en.wikipedia can catch up. Contrary to what seems to be believed on Commons, most editors working on these articles had no idea the COAs were about to be deleted until it happened (0n a Saturday night, in North America), and are now scrambling.

I'm in no way "organizing" this cleanup, and probably not the person to inform. Just trying to calm what appear to be rather troubled waters on en.wiki. Thanks. T L Miles (talk) 16:26, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Easiest would be to check the edits of CommonsDelinker on en.wp, I guess. The edit summary notes what was done. Siebrand 17:39, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

cat moves by SieBot

Hi there. Would it be possible to amend SieBot so as to replace (once the images have been moved to the new cat) the content of the old cat with a category redirection? This would help cat deletion, if necessary, and at least would not leave an empty cat that could be repopulated by further uploads. Unless there is a good reason not to do so, of course. Also, I don't know whether there are other bots doing the cat moves, so if you think this should be implemented, please communicate with the other bot operators... Thanks in advance, --Eusebius (talk) 09:04, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm rejecting this feature request. The reason is that those adding the category moves to the SieBot commands page have to manually clean up. After a move of category members, the remaining category page may have to be removed, redirected, repurposed, or whatever. The bot does not know what to do, and each action will have pros and cons, hence it does nothing. The same is true for moving to a not yet existing category. If a {{Move}} was on the source category, it has to be removed from the target category. Not too many admins are that active in this area. If you want one or more of them to change their ways, or need an explanation on a particular descision, I think it is best to approach them. Thanks for understanding. Cheers! Siebrand 09:42, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
OK, I guess you know what you're talking about. Apparently only the "repurposed" case does not benefit from a {{Cat redirect}}, and I personally don't do it very often, but maybe others do. What's the best way to discuss such things, you think? VP? AN? CFD? --Eusebius (talk) 10:27, 27 May 2009 (UTC)
AN. If there is consensus for a particular change amongst the admins that most frequently use the tool, I'm fine with adding it to the current code. I may not be able to code it myself, but I'll find someone who can. Siebrand 12:31, 27 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello Siebrand! Could you please tell your bot that it should hold off from meta pages such as i. e. de:Wikipedia:Urheberrechtsfragen/Archiv/2005/04? It´s a bit counterproductive when you can´t trace back about which image the discussion was held... Chaddy (talk) 17:52, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Commons Delinker

I suppose your delinker is out of order again, see e.g. [12]... --S[1] 21:13, 3 June 2009 (UTC)

Aside from the slow loading link, I have no idea what you would like to tell me. CheckUsage.php is not a script I maintain, and it is not related to CommonsDelinker. Maybe you expected CommonsDelinker to make the removals really quickly. Well, there was a mass deletion and undeletion, and it looks like CD is still working on that. So I guess the file you deleted will also be in the queue somewhere. Siebrand 08:26, 4 June 2009 (UTC)
CD got stuck in a look somehow. I have asked Multichill to look into it to prevent it from happening again in the future; meanwhile CD has been killed and restarted. This means that the above image will not be delinker automagically. Siebrand 08:50, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Why are the images I post on the commons being replaced by newer duplicates?

Apparently some one else also moved some of the pictures that I already moved to the commons. Then you deleted the original uploads. It seems like it would be a lot more efficient to delete the newer versions of the file rather then the older one. Then you would not need to update the corresponding pages. I guess that no harm has actually been done, but seems like kind of a waste of time. M stone (talk) 02:45, 5 June 2009 (UTC)

Commons delinker amalgamate tasks

Hello!

To save spamming the history of pages where de-linker operates multiple times, Is it possible for the bot to amalgamate its actions before performing them. Recently the bot removed a lot of images from one page here, and it sorta flooded the history to some extent. Its not vital, but it would be nice :) 129.78.64.103 04:55, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

To save resources, CD works on a 'per image event' basis. There are no plans to change this. Siebrand 13:03, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

add an additional function to CommonsDelinker

add a sub-page in the user area of the wiki concerned (for example: [[User:CommonsDelinker/Logs]]) where he wrote everything he has done as the action, such as:
# 2009-05-27: Delete [[:File:...]], 5 uses in the wiki, requested by [[commons:user:the order' bot]]
This allows to monitor the actions of the bot in this list by following a single page and not to remove the bot flag. Thanks. Crochet.david (talk) 07:56, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

Bot flag on Thai Wikipedia

Hello Siebrand! My name is Harley Hartwell, an autoconfirmed (Not ADMIN) from Thai Wikipedia. I've seen an admin note on Commons Delinker's talk page on Thai Wikipedia. The administrator there would like you to request a bot flag here since your bot are making lots of edits that flood the recent changes there. If you don't request the bot flag and the bot is still running with many edits for multiple times, the admin there might block the bot due to the bot's edit flooded the recent changes list. Thank you for your understanding and I hope that bot will be granted bot status on Thai Wikipedia soon. --Harley Hartwell (talk) 15:32, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Feel free to assign the bot bit, or block the bot. CD is a service, and communities should deal with it as they please. As a policy, CD admins do not request bot bits for CommonsDelinker. Siebrand 10:07, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

Delinker malfunction!

Dear Siebrand, please stop your CommonsDelinker immediately from removing the Italian coat-of-arms images from articles on the German Wikipedia. Most of those arms are uploaded locally to this edition of Wikipedia and your bot removes tons of existing and valid image links from articles and lists and destroys tables. I do NOT have the time to undo every single edit and it will be much easier for us to deal with the few remaining redlinks than to check thousands of edits by your bot. Thanks! --Kazu89 ノート 07:21, 7 August 2009 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker and the flagicon image template

Hello Siebrand,

I've noticed that the CommonsDelinker interacts a little messily with the {{flagicon image}} template on english Wikipedia. The way the bot currently works, it replaces "{{flagicon image|Example_Non-free_Image.png}}" with "{{flagicon image|}}", leaving a big ugly "[[Image:|22x20px|border |]]" on the page where the little flag icon used to be. I was wondering, would it be possible to have the bot put the image File:Flag of None.svg in the template instead of just deleting the old image? It's a dummy icon we use when the flag image we need isn't available.

It would mean a lot less manual clean-up for pages that use the {{flagicon image}} template. Orange Tuesday (talk) 20:29, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Or you could just add an #if statement to check if {{{1|}}} is set. Multichill (talk) 20:33, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
On the same topic, it feels like that CommonsDelinker is missing a lot of the replacements. Many of the image replacements are like Foo.svg and don't have either File: or Image: infront of it. Is there a way to fix CommonsDelinker so it could do stuff like this. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 20:10, 2 September 2009 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker and template

Hi, is it normal that the bot removes references to deleted images when they're parameters of a template? A bit risky, no? --Eusebius (talk) 13:33, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Only if those templates do not take into account that one or more of their parameters can be empty. If the page reference is there in the local image page, and the page text contains the image name, it will be removed. Siebrand 15:33, 17 September 2009 (UTC)
The template is fine (because I didn't design it myself...), but for some templates, the readers of the templates expect a reference to a file, a red link making more sense than nothing at all. Anyway, pointless remark I guess, it's just that the temporary removal of a promoted VI happened to cause issues in several other pages of the project. --Eusebius (talk) 15:46, 17 September 2009 (UTC)

Hi, please take a look at http://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Sternenmeer&action=history , http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Sternenmeer&action=history and http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Benutzer:Sternenmeer&action=history. In all three instances your Bot unlinked/removed an image that when I checked it was perfectly fine and NOT deleted at all.

Maybe it was first deleted, and then this deletion was some time later reverted. In thise case, your bot should reflect this as well and UNDO its Delinking, because otherwise it just causes unnecessary extra work for people, like it did here, instead of relieving us of stupid repetitive tasks, as it set out to do.

‒ Sincerely Sternenmeer (talk) 11:15, 23 September 2009 (UTC).

CommonsDelinker (replace mode) seems down

http://stable.toolserver.org/delinker/index.php?replacer=1 doesn't show any replacements beyond September 20. Deletions seem ok ( http://stable.toolserver.org/delinker/index.php ). -- User:Docu at 13:05, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

I notice that this file File:Giraffa cabarceno.JPG is used only on the italian wikipedia, can this be used on others? --RayquazaDialgaWeird2210 (talk) 01:50, 26 September 2009 (UTC)

Yes. Siebrand 00:33, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Hello Siebrand! Could you please tell your bot that it should hold off from meta pages such as i. e. de:Wikipedia:Urheberrechtsfragen/Archiv/2005/04? It´s a bit counterproductive when you can´t trace back about which image the discussion was held... Chaddy (talk) 17:52, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Best add a {{Nobots}} there... Siebrand 10:22, 1 June 2009 (UTC)
Ok, that´s a possibility. But it´s a bit intricate to add this template on so many (only two examples) pages... Chaddy (talk) 15:42, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Siebrand! Me again about the same problem. This is still very nerving. Couldn´t you tell the bot not to remove images in the project room? Chaddy (talk) 12:46, 27 September 2009 (UTC)

Nope. Siebrand 18:43, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
Why not? And how to solve the problem in de-WP (I don´t know if other projects have the same problem)? Adding {{Nobots}} to all relating pages is a bit laborious... Chaddy (talk) 18:53, 27 September 2009 (UTC)
If pages must stay unchanged, you can also protect them. Otherwise the occasional revert shouldn't be too much trouble. Siebrand 06:55, 28 September 2009 (UTC)

why ?

User:SieBot "Moving from Hình truyền lên bởi thành viên Lưu Ly to An Dinh Residence (following category redirect)" [16] ???????????? Lưu Ly (talk) 12:59, 30 September 2009 (UTC)

Because at this time the category Category:Hình truyền lên bởi thành viên Lưu Ly was a category redirect to Category:An Dinh Residence. I dont know if this is correct or not.
If they are the same the correct name is the english one, the category system is english. Also with your later edits you again orphaned the category. A category must be categorized into other categories, just like Category:An Dinh Residence which is a subcategory of Category:Buildings in Huế and Category:Nguyen Dynasty. See COM:CAT. --Martin H. (talk) 13:56, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
Now I see: "Hình truyền lên bởi thành viên Lưu Ly" is your user category. --Martin H. (talk) 14:00, 30 September 2009 (UTC)
I did hidden Category:Hình truyền lên bởi thành viên Lưu Ly, please redirect Category:An Dinh Residence to Category:Hình truyền lên bởi thành viên Lưu Ly by to fin is wrong. Thank. Lưu Ly (talk) 11:36, 1 October 2009 (UTC)

Image extraction

Hi, I noted you worked on the "extract" image tag. At the Category:Images for extraction, there is no Talk and there is generally no "project" or similar link from related pages I checked.

Is there something like an "image improvement and extraction" Project or workgroup?

We are pondering at COM:TOL whether add about 3 times as many extraction requests as there are already pending. Also there is the idea to introduce a number of additions or replacements to the category system. People who utilize the "Images for extraction" cat would probably be interested to join in. 04:49, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

{{Move cat}} additional parameter

Hi. Would you be ok to modify the bot moving categories so that it accepts an additional parameter in the move cat template, telling him to add a {{Cat redirect}} template on the former category page? I don't ask it to be the default behaviour, since we haven't been able so far to converge on a consensus about what to do, but at least the option of using it could limit the number of empty category deletion without any mention of the target cat. Thanks in advance! --Eusebius (talk) 06:55, 18 September 2009 (UTC)

I patched category.py to do this. If this is what you use, I can post it here. -- User:Docu at 15:38, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Again, I think that this redirect insert can be the default behaviour if the source category does exist. Even when deleting the source category afterwards, it will generate the right edit summary. In the rare cases that the source category needs to be conserved, an undo will be very quick. --Foroa (talk) 16:19, 22 September 2009 (UTC)
Sorry, this conversation has been archived before it was over. --Eusebius (talk) 09:36, 9 October 2009 (UTC)

Suggestion for SieBot

Hello, your bot is doing very good work, but I would like to make a suggestion (though I don't know if that's technically possible at all). The CommonsDelinker always uses a different summary when it replaces an image with another, likeiwse: "Replacing Foo.jpg with Bar.jpg, as ordered by Some admin: Exact duplicate". However, when SieBot moves a cat, it only says: "Robot: Moving category Foo to Bar". Now, I think it would be great if the bot could say something like: "Moving category Foo to Bar, as ordered by Some admin: Proper capitalization". This way, people could see the reason and the person who made the request. This is easier then to understand and to complain if necessary. It's almost impossible to find the one who made the request in the awfully long history of User:CommonsDelinker/commands. Would something like this be possible? Let me know. Thank you. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:12, 11 October 2009 (UTC)

CD and SieBot are two different bots. If you can write this feature in python for me, please let me know and I can provide you the script sources, and I will test and run it with the change. Siebrand 14:59, 12 October 2009 (UTC)

removing autocategorization from creator pages

Hi, I would like to ask your opinion about using CommonsDelinker to help me tackle the removal of autocategorization from images using old-style creator pages. In the old days it was recommended that creator pages contain category with the name of the creator. That way all the images using creator pages were automacically categorized into those categories. This causes a problem that such images are very hard to place into more logical subcategories like "Photographs by ...". See more here. I am slowly tacking creator pages with large number of images and use my bot user:JarektBot to reorganize such categories by adding appropriate categories to all the images and removing autocategorization from the creator page. I was thinking abut using CommonsDelinker to fix couple thousands of rarely used creator pages. For example creator:Fidelis Schabet autocategorizes into Category:Fidelis Schabet. To fix that I would like to make sure that each image in that category has line "[[Category:Fidelis Schabet]]" in it. I think "Rename Category:Fidelis Schabet as Category:Fidelis Schabet" would work better than "<fixed text><cat>Fidelis Schabet</cat><text>Category:Fidelis Schabet</text></fixed text>" to achieve that. I would like to run a small test on a small category, and if it works than I would like to pass commands for fixing few thousands categories. --Jarekt (talk) 21:09, 19 October 2009 (UTC)

I would advise you to approach Multichil. I trust him to be able to change my bot code, and aside from running my bots, I have very little time to contribute to Commons at the moment... Siebrand 07:48, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
thanks --Jarekt (talk) 12:22, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
replace.py -lang:commons -family:commons -regex -dotall "^(.*)$" "\1\n[[Category:Fidelis Schabet]]" -cat:"Fidelis Schabet" -excepttext:"[cC]ategory:Fidelis Schabet"
should do the trick. Multichill (talk) 16:53, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
OK, just create the list somewhere. I'll see what I can do. Siebrand 23:33, 22 October 2009 (UTC)

Bot error

Your bot is busily moving every entry in Category:Haringey to Category:Hanringey, borough of London - can you either undo this, or change everything it's done so far to Category:Haringey, borough of London - while "Haringey" is the borough, and "Harringay" the town from which it takes its name, there is no such place as "Hanringey". Thanks!iridescent 17:03, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

Template breaking

This edit left "{{duplicate|}}". Could this be fixed? Thanks, Paradoctor (talk) 09:55, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

The bot cannot deal with incorrect tagging. That shouldn't have been there anymore :) Siebrand 14:09, 13 November 2009 (UTC)
Sure, and I removed it myself. That's not my point, though. The bot edits templates without knowing about the side effects. I'm aware that semantics is difficult. I'm merely asking that the bot leaves a notification on the talk page whenever a match occurs inside a template, rather than changing it without knowing about the side effects. The work required stays the same, but the solution is cleaner, not leaving broken templates hanging for possibly long time spans. Regards, Paradoctor (talk) 15:38, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

Mt. Pisgah State Park

Just wanted to let you know that the move of Category:Mt. Pisgah State Park to "Category:Mount Pisgah State Park" ignored the official name used by the en:Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), which is Mt. Pisgah State Park. Please see the official DCNR Mt. Pisgah State Park website and here is the picture of the park entrance sign. The official Penn DOT map also refers to it as "Mt. Pisgah" - see here. CommonsDelinker suggestion

Hi Siebrand; If one is not alert when moving files, it is possible to overlook the need to edit the new filename into the line to be pasted into User:CommonsDelinker/commands.[17] The result is that CommonsDelinker replaces instances of the old file name with "File:New image.ext". The instructions could be improved, but I wonder if CommonsDelinker might ignore and flag commands to replace filenames with "File:New image.ext". [18] [19] Thank you, Walter Siegmund (talk) 00:38, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

I concur; this would help avoid idiot noob sysop mistakes (: Stifle (talk) 09:15, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

Major mistake

Hi, I think that [20] is a major mistake, probably made worse by the fact that SieBot don't use a cooldown period anymore on category redirects since a couple of weeks. --Foroa (talk) 18:30, 25 November 2009 (UTC)

It seems to wait sometimes, but not always. It's rare that it's a problem though. -- User:Docu at 18:36, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
It is not a real problem when unknown; once it is known, with a couple of well chosen redirects, massive merges/uncategorisations can be done into one single category. I did not manage to find the delay logic, but as it is standing now, anyone can merge/move categories in a couple of minutes/hours without any sort of control. So, it certainly needs some cooldown period unless we have a bot that can easily undo such moves. I think that we need a central category move logging. As it is working now, too many bots are moving categories without any sort of overall view. --Foroa (talk) 19:01, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
To avoid any problem, can you block Siebot? After all it's Russbot and not Siebot that does the redirects. -- User:Docu at 19:20, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Comment: I blocked the bot to prevent more such mistakes. Please unblock it when it's fixed. --The Evil IP address (talk) 19:48, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Thanks. I'm working on cleaning it up. -- User:Docu at 19:53, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Comment: Of course, this is only my opnion, but I consider it very dangerous that the bot automatically moves category redirects. If some vandal would decide to replace Category:Commons-en with a {{Category redirect}}, then the bot would log in as "Siebrand" and "move" the Main Page to the "correct" category. --The Evil IP address (talk) 20:23, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
Foroa asked be to comment here. To fix or at least contain this problem:
  1. Slap around and revert the user who destroyed Category:Subnational entities and Category:Maps by country subdivision (and maybe more categories)
  2. Restore cooldown period, why was it ever removed?!?! Using {{Category redirect}} for moves is Bad
Multichill (talk) 20:47, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
The cooldown period works with RussBot. Not sure why SieBot attempts to do these moves too. -- User:Docu at 21:05, 25 November 2009 (UTC)
There are several bots doing those moves. I fail to see why {{Category redirect}} is bad (apart from loosing a little bit of history information). It is suggested in the category rename guide and is by far the procedure that needs the least work (for non-disputable moves). --Foroa (talk) 17:21, 27 November 2009 (UTC)

Ok. Siebrand disabled the category redirect for now so I unblocked the bot. I looked into the code and i'm afraid someone broke the code the get the last edit. This will also break the cooldown code. Multichill (talk) 14:53, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. The version russbot is using seems to work (User:RussBot/category redirect log). -- User:Docu at 15:07, 28 November 2009 (UTC)
To fix the rare problem Foroa mentions, "imagemap" needs to be defined in the "exceptionRegexes" (around line 4103 in wikipedia.py) and then added where "def removeCategoryLinks", "def replaceCategoryInPlace" (and possibly some others) call replaceExcept. -- User:Docu at 15:43, 28 November 2009 (UTC)

Category:Alcove houses

Your bot moved Category:Laubenhäuser to Category:Alcove houses. I cannot find any evidence that "alcove house" is the correct translation of "Laubenhaus". The "Laubenhaus"/"Löwinghuus" is a specific type of house common in the Mark of Brandenburg. Is "alcove house" really the technical term for this? --Slomox (talk) 12:12, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Foroa (talk · contribs) issued the command for this move, so that is who you should contact. Thanks. Wknight94 talk 16:35, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
Okay, thanks. But then I have another suggestion to Siebrand: Perhaps your bot should include some information in the summary about who issued the command or how to obtain this information. --Slomox (talk) 17:15, 29 December 2009 (UTC)
That sounds very difficult. The bot is running commands placed in COM:CDC. It would need to somehow figure out which user added the particular commands it was running. The way I found out so quickly was by checking who deleted the old category - but some don't get deleted. Wknight94 talk 17:29, 29 December 2009 (UTC)

Possible bug in User:CommonsDelinker bot

I was told this is the right place to mention this.

This edit left a space in front of the paragraph following the image, which broke the normal formatting and put the paragraph in plain text. Normally when you place an image inline, you wouldn't think to leave no whitespace before your text on the off chance that a bot will delete it. it would be better if the bot deleted all spaces following the the image. In this case, the page would have looked better with a broken image than with garbled formatting. Thanks! --Dbratland (talk) 04:43, 16 January 2010 (UTC)

Possible bug connected with Template:Move assigned categories

Hello Siebrand,

Your bot has removed all media which was connected with Category:Photographs of signs although no consensus has been reached. Would you restore that or give an explanation? Thanks, --Mattes (talk) 06:48, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

The move has been requested here. In principe, most of the categories are containing photos/images of yyy, so those redundant constructs that pop up all the time, are (almost) systematically renamed. --Foroa (talk) 07:19, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi, are you sure it is a good idea to claim that those parks are National as well as by the State of Florida? The Old cat Category:National Parks in Florida was much more logical, as these Parks are administrated by the Federal Government but happen to be in Florida. Not to mention, that the cat is miserably defined and contains mostly "parks" that aren't parks by any standard anyway. Who discussed this where please? --h-stt !? 16:19, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Renamed images

Do you think Delinker or another bot like it could automatically replace images that have been renamed? User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 07:38, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

The problem there is separating intentional redirects from leftovers by image moves. There might be a reason to always have a redirect "File:Elections poll of current week.jpg" that would redirect you to the latest poll results. I guess you could check the reason for creation of the redirect in the log, but it will always be a guess I presume. TheDJ (talk) 17:51, 23 February 2010 (UTC)
The redirects will break when it comes to images; it treats it as a red link at some wiki's until it is actually replaced. User:Zscout370 (Return fire) 18:38, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

A peculiar case of CommonsDelinker misbehaving (kind of)

Hello, CommonsDelinker recently performed a series of annoying links removal on fr.wp. To sum it up, the situation is as follows : since there is no "freedom of panorama" in France, Commons used to house a heap of pictures of recent buildings located in France that were illegal and had to be deleted. A bot has been programmed and sysoped on wp.fr to reimport said pictures locally (where they are tolerated), before they were deleted on Commons. Problem is, CommonsDelinker then removes the supposedly red links pointing to deleted media without checking whether the file exists locally. I understand that this is quite the opposite of the usual situation (pictures are usually migrated from WP to Commons, not the other way around). Would it be doable to implement such a check ? Thanks in advance ! --MAURILBERT (discuter) 22:27, 8 April 2010 (UTC)

It does check if the files exist locally. However, replication lag at the toolserver may cause issues if the timing is close. Siebrand 23:55, 8 April 2010 (UTC)
OK, so I assumed incorrectly, sorry about that, and thanks for the information. --MAURILBERT (discuter) 01:01, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Hi, in these cases, is there a way to make CommonsDelinker remove the entire template when removing the media file? --by Màñü飆¹5 talk 20:04, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Not that I know. If you see a way to implement it, please propose a patch to the pywikipediabot commonsdelinker/delinker.py that we use. Siebrand 22:04, 10 April 2010 (UTC)

Basic fixes

Hi Siebrand,

You might want to add Commons:Tools/pywiki file description cleanup to SieBot (category renamings). If you add it (not to CommonsDelinker), I would monitor it initially and deal with user queries.

BTW: done. -- User:Docu at 08:50, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Please rewrite CommonsDelinker for independence to Toolserver

Hi. As you know, CommonsDelinker is currently down due to Toolserver DB down. Since Check usage tool which is used by CommonsDelinker is substituted by GlobalUsage tool. GlobalUsage also provide API query for machine. Would you rewrite CommonsDelinker to make it less dependent to Toolserver database? Thank you. – Kwj2772 (msg) 10:00, 24 April 2010 (UTC)

Please provide a patch if you are able to. CommonsDelinker is in the pywikipediabot subversion repo. Siebrand 20:19, 8 May 2010 (UTC)

Category:Nude young women has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

First I owe you a huge apology. I had been working with Category:young women over the last week. A Categories for discussion was opened to determine what to do with the whole Category:young women since the word "Young" is very arbitrary. I also created several sub-categories in an attempt to remove the "Too crowded tag" from the Category:young women. After some discussion with other users several of the categories I created were merged with other non-young women categories. Since I agreed with their idea and I created the categories, I started to move the images tagged the categories with the speedy delete tag since. I had started this process with Category:Nude young women. After the fact, I realized that I didn’t create this category, but you did. I honestly got confused.

So I apologize.

I am offering to fix the files is you ask me to. However I am asking first so that, so if you agree with me or don't care I don't have to put them back only to shift them back later after the Deletion request is close.

Again I truly apologize.-ARTEST4ECHO (talk) 13:54, 12 May 2010 (UTC)

SieBot bug

Re this edit: why on earth did the bot add [[Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project]]? It was totally wrong. An image is placed in that category by the {{Geograph}} tag which was already present. That template generates an highly specialised sortkey. Adding the category again destroyed that key. Please fix the bot immediatement. — RHaworth (Talk | contribs) 06:55, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

Aargh, behavior of the categories() function was changed without bothering to check what this would cause, I reverted it. Bot should be updated though. Multichill (talk) 12:54, 16 May 2010 (UTC)

SieBot is now running r8182, a rev after which Multichill reverted to the original (non-API) call. That change was made on May 6 in r8149. Apparently, and luckily, I didn't update my code until May 13. Multichill, can you write a script to check the edits in the date range given above to fix the awful mess - is that possible even? There's no use going about checking 10k edits by hand, I think... --Siebrand 16:35, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
Good. BTW It's more like 30k edits, luckily most are on Navy images. -- User:Docu at 16:40, 16 May 2010 (UTC)
A new count got me something like 24640 edits:
  • There are 2 edits in category talk namespace, 492 in category namespace, 21 in gallery namespace. All these should be ok anyways.
  • 22320 edits are on Navy images (these could be fixed fairly easily by removing more or less the same categories from all these pages).
  • 1805 edits are on other images.
Hope this helps. -- User:Docu at 13:21, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
If revertbot.py works as it should, it could be modified to deal with the 1805. I don't have a bot a account to run this on though. Afterwards, we could redo the category moves of 13-16. -- User:Docu at 13:40, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
Please don't fix but comprehensively. Multichill promised me on IRC he'll do his bot magic to fix it. As in essence it is nothing critical, just polluting, there is no damage done if this takes a few weeks before it is done, just as long as it gets done. Siebrand 17:49, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure if revertbot.py could undo the edits if there are subsequent edits to a page. Thus I wouldn't wait too long for the 1805 pages. The Navy images can wait or could be done through cosmetic_changes.py while doing other things. -- User:Docu at 00:06, 18 May 2010 (UTC)

Mass copy

Hi. Is there any possibility of a mass copy function being added to CommonsDelinker/commands? Like move cat, but without removing the old category. -mattbuck (Talk) 15:58, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Not sure I understand. You mean adding a category to all file in a category? Siebrand 18:40, 29 May 2010 (UTC)
Yes, pretty much. I'm slowly working on a category tree for british trains, which works by class, operator, livery and maybe eventually location. Unfortunately there's some duplication - for instance all Category:British Rail Class 313s of London Overground are Category:British Rail Class Class 313s in Silverlink livery, though it's not an exclusive thing, so for such cases it would be helpful to allow it to copy everything into the new category without losing the old one. -mattbuck (Talk) 11:16, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
You should probably run your own bot and run the commands at will with "category.py add -<[cat|catr|subcats|subcatsr]:CategoryName>". Extracted from the command documentation:
[..]
Scripts to manage categories.

Syntax: python category.py action [-option]

where action can be one of these:
 * add         - mass-add a category to a list of pages

[..]

If action is "add", the following options are supported:

-cat Work on all pages which are in a specific category.
Argument can also be given as "-cat:categoryname" or
                  as "-cat:categoryname|fromtitle" (using # instead of |
is also allowed in this one and the following)

-catr Like -cat, but also recursively includes pages in
                  subcategories, sub-subcategories etc. of the
                  given category.
Argument can also be given as "-catr:categoryname" or
                  as "-catr:categoryname|fromtitle".

-subcats Work on all subcategories of a specific category.
Argument can also be given as "-subcats:categoryname" or
                  as "-subcats:categoryname|fromtitle".

-subcatsr Like -subcats, but also includes sub-subcategories etc. of
                  the given category.
Argument can also be given as "-subcatsr:categoryname" or
                  as "-subcatsr:categoryname|fromtitle".

Reviewers Logo CopyVio?

File:File-Redaktor WikipediaOld600px.png

I received Reviewers access on en.Wiki recently and while adding the userbox to my userpage, I noticed something that will notice (if you are a US editor)....the Reviewers logo looks just like the CBS logo. Take a look. The "eye" in the Reviewers logo is slightly smaller, but it is just like the CBS logo. The Reviewers logo was created by Polish user Derski, so he probably wasn't aware of the CBS logo. Also, the Reviewers logo has a "This media file may meet the criteria for speedy deletion" message and a "This file is a copyright violation..." message. With those, I feel that we should get a couple good logo makers and create a new Reviewers logo that isn't close to the CBS logo for obvious copyright reasons. This has begun a long discussion on en.Wiki here. Other users are requesting it be moved to Commons as the Reviewers logo is hosted here. We have a blue arrow logo (nicknamed the "fast forward" logo by some) ready to go in SVG format in its place (created by en.Wiki admin Gwen Gale and SVG'd by editor Anomie). Since you are the only admin I know here, could you direct this to the correct Commons board (the Commons equivlant of en.Wiki's ANI) or have Commons admins post on the en.Wiki thread here. Thanks! - NeutralHomerTalk17:26, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

The CBS logo is obviously PD-inelligible--DieBuche (talk) 17:39, 19 June 2010 (UTC)
Indeed and with the Reviewers logo looking the same, almost alike, I think it would go for that same public domain inelligibility. - NeutralHomerTalk18:00, 19 June 2010 (UTC)

Problem with the Delinker?

Hi, I saw a problem with the work of the delinker yesterday.

I renamed a file and put it to the delinker_talk page. Some time later it has been transfered to the main of the delinker and only a few seconds later it's deleted by the delinker_help "Removing images being processed". But all usages are still the old ones, the source uses the redirect to the new file.

One example shown in detail:

here I put my request to the delinker_talk [25]

this is my file move [26]

here user:ZooFari moved all requests from "talk" to "main" 2010/06/20 17:34 [27] and [28] also at 17:34 the commons helper removed all the requests [29]

Other files worked by the delinker normaly are fine in all WP projects when delinker_talk says "Removing images being processed" but when I take a look here on CheckUsage of the "old" filename File:Sipuncula.jpg CheckUsage or alternative one of the usages (not renamed until now:) here de:Spritzwürmer

Something I think wrong? Misunderstand the work or timescale of the delinker? NobbiP talk 12:01, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Category moving and old categories

The tool to move categories by SieBot should be supplemented with required treatment of the old category (the old category page should be compulsorily furnished with {{Seecat}} tag or delete tag and emptied). Some users move categories (using SieBot?) and keep old categories empty and untreated (see User talk:ŠJů#Categories moved) and it's needlessly difficult to treate them behindhand and manually. --ŠJů (talk) 22:23, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Agree it is tedious. Perhaps the command template can be modified so that a paramter is oldcataction=delete/redirect. ZooFari 01:21, 1 July 2010 (UTC)
By default, it can leave a {{Category redirect}}. This would significantly accelerate the deletion process too if needed as the edit summary for such deletions (nuke) is automatically correct. --Foroa (talk) 11:11, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I've come across this crazy looking map made with errors which goes against the 4 CIA ethnolinguistic maps. I was wondering if you can delete this now or leave a comment on it. I hate seeing maps made with missing ethnic groups. Thanks!--Officer (talk) 03:48, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

This map is not helpful but instead creating huge problems. Someone with political agenda created this map which washes away some ethnic groups and makes another group smaller and this leads to uprisings by some ethnic groups in Afghanistan when their leaders see this online. This is why deadly attacks on western forces in Afghanistan are on the rise because some of those Afghans think that they are being ethnic cleansed by the western armies. If you are a westerner, you are putting your own soldiers at risk.--Officer (talk) 20:10, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Don't really see why you are canvassing, but the general opinion appears to be keep. I have nothing to add. Siebrand 20:36, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
This map is missing several ethnic groups as I explained and the people who prepared this map won't allow the CIA maps in Wikipedia, they use this one instead. Nobody has time to be patrolling Wikipedia everyday. Those who decided to keep this map the last time based their argument that the map is used in many Wikipedia articles. But now it is not used so it should be ok to delete it. You've deleted similar kind maps before so that's why I came to you for help on this one.--Officer (talk) 00:52, 7 July 2010 (UTC)

Ports of Auckland

Siebrand, please reverse the changes to the category:Ports of Auckland, where your bot has recently "fixed" Category:Cranes of ports of Auckland and Category:Vehicles of ports of Auckland. Hi Siebrand. From http://toolserver.org/~delinker/index.php?image=Autoritratto.jpg it seems that Delinker skips Commons' creator namespace (named "Portal:" in the log). Portal:Tranquillo Marangoni doesn't redirect to Creator:Tranquillo Marangoni.

Is this correct? If yes, could the namespace be added to make sure it operates there?

BTW, reading the previous section, it looks like my notice didn't really work. Maybe User talk:Siebrand/Editnotice would help.  Docu  at 09:00, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Commons delinker and failed delinks on en-wikipedia

Hi there. I recently raised an issue with failed delinking for a picture on en-wikipedia. I've now fixed the six links on en-wikipedia (see here), but am wondering why it failed to fix those links when it seemed happy to fix the ones on fr-wikipedia? There is also this en-wikipedia database report, which may be relevant. Carcharoth (Commons) (talk) 15:18, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Pywikipediabot sometimes is not able to save certain articles. No idea why, and I'm not going to investigate it. As long as the issue isn't too big, I'm leaving it this way. Siebrand 15:31, 10 July 2010 (UTC)

Neuenkirchen, Lüneburger Heide

Hi Siebrand, I don't complain about the changes from categories of the type “Neuenkirchen (Lüneburger Heide)” to type “Neuenkirchen, Lüneburger Heide”. But as I wasn't warned I produced several more “Neuenkirchen (Lüneburger Heide)” categories before I got aware of the changes. Currently we have an uncomely mix of both category types. Therefore I'm asking you to run your bot again. It would be convenient for me to have the categories consistent before I upload about 400 more images of Neuenkirchen.

CommonsTicker?

At m:User:CommonsDelinker it says that CommonsTicker is Delinker's early warning system. It seems to have stopped working at English Wikinews in 2008.

Is this the right place to ask if there are plans to activate the ticker, or should I ask de:Benutzer Diskussion:Duesentrieb ?

You really have to ask Duesentrieb. I think CT is a great tool, but as far as I know it hasn't been working for years... Siebrand 18:28, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi. You changed the category of this image file to a building category, but it's an Anglican church as background to a Masonic gravestone. It's the gravestone (pillar or column shape) which is of interest in the image, and it's not a building. I don't know how to re-categorise it correctly, but the gravestone is not a Masonic building. Please reply on my talk page. Thanks.Storye book (talk) 12:55, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Category:Magnolia fruit and seeds

Hi Siebrand, I saw that one of the categories I recently worked on, Magnolia fruit and seeds (originally Magnolia Fruits and seeds) was renamed. As the history of that category is no longer accesible (at least not for me) and you were the only user I saw associated with that name change, I suspect you are the one who renamed it. I believe I was the one who created the category but as I can't see the history anymore, I'm not sure.

Now I'm a bit puzzled: I can understand that "Fruit" should be spelled with an initial undercast, instead of a capital F. But why does "fruit" have to be in singular and "seeds" in plural form? I thought the category depicted "fruits and seeds" of a range of different Magnolia species. And if the rule is to name categories in singular form, shouldn't "seed" then also be in singular? And for comparison: the categories Magnolia cultivars and Magnolia hybrids are also in plural form, which seems quite right to me.

Oh, and by the way: I know that the plural of "fruit" can also be "fruit" (without a trailing "s") but that must be in another sense of the word, probably when the word refers to edible fruit or to the total of the harvest. Throughout the Magnolia literature (the majority of which is written by native British and American English authors) the plural "fruits" is used when authors refer to more than one fructification. - Wikiklaas (talk) 12:06, 4 August 2010 (UTC)

Follow the deletion log of Category:Magnolia fruit and seeds to find the actor. --Foroa (talk) 15:49, 6 August 2010 (UTC)
There is no deletion log of Magnolia fruit and seeds as this category was never deleted. There is of course a deletion log of Magnolia Fruits and seeds, which says that MPF deleted it but I guess this was on request of some other user. I noticed SieBot changing the category name in File:Catesby_Natural_History_of_Carolina_plate_39_Magnolia_virginiana_and_Blue_Grosbeak.jpg at 15:20, which was 14 minutes before MPF deleted the category, which is why I suspect him to act on request and not on his own initiative. I'll ask MPF on who's request he acted. - Wikiklaas (talk) 03:02, 8 August 2010 (UTC)

Question about CommonsDelinker

Hi, ¿Is there a problem with CommonsDelinker if I use a template that encapsulates [[image:file.jpg|thumb|description]] instead of using it directly ? regards, --Cvmontuy (talk) 00:07, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

CommonsDelinker

Hi. There seems to be a problem with the CommonsDelinker, at least on de.wikinews.org. Not only that it deletes images from basically archived articles - and changes the content doing this, and so we basically have to look after all the edits it does whether it deleted text from the article or not -, the last two edits were wrong: It deleted two images instead of replacing them. Could you please try to fix this? Regards, --Angela H. (talk) 17:58, 11 August 2010 (UTC)

Can you be a little more explicit than "the last 2 edits"? Thanks. Siebrand 19:43, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I can. "The last two edits" at that time were this one and that one. The images should have been replaced (by the images with the names given in the description), but they were deleted. Regards, --Angela H. (talk) 10:11, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
A Commons administrator deleted the images before they had been replaced. That's avoidable human error. Please point this out to the deleting administrator. Siebrand 09:50, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

BotBit

Hi. This may be a silly question, but a bot of mine depends on the bot-bit to separate bots from flesh-and-blood users. On many wiki's Commonsdelinker seems to be an ordinary user. Is this on purpose or by oversight? Kleuske (talk) 17:11, 23 August 2010 (UTC)

Deciding on bot status for CommonsDelinker is up to the local communities. Basically, we don't care, mainly because requesting a bot bit on all 800 or so Wikimedia wikis is not doable, and the local communities should decide for themselves if they want the edits of CD hidden or not. Siebrand 10:40, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
Ok. Fair enough. I'll just put CD in a "trusted bots" list and ignore it. A few other bots badly need placing aswell. Keeping some central administration of who'se a (trusted) bot and who'se not would save me some footwork, though. And you too. Perhaps a good idea? Kleuske (talk) 14:12, 24 August 2010 (UTC)
They're called global bots (see somewhere on meta:), but the wiki community has to opt-in for the global bot concept. Siebrand 22:25, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

problem with audio file

Hello. I reverted this edit of Common Delinker on el.wiktionary because the file Pl-kamizelka.ogg does not exist. Please, see what the problem is and contact me if it's no trouble. --Flyax (talk) 15:22, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

The same thing seems to have happened at w:Polish phonology, where CommonsDelinker made the following three edits: [30], [31], and [32]. In all three cases the audio link was changed to link to a non-existing file: from Media:Co pl.ogg to Media:Pl-co?.ogg, from Media:Hak.ogg to Media:Pl-hak.ogg, and from Media:Pl W Szczebrzeszynie chrzaszcz brzmi w trzcinie.ogg to Media:Pl-w_Szczebrzeszynie_chrząszcz_brzmi_w_trzcinie.ogg, respectively. In the case of Co pl.ogg there is a box notifying that it was replaced by Pl-co?.ogg, even though it wasn't; the same situation for Pl_W_Szczebrzeszynie_chrzaszcz_brzmi_w_trzcinie.ogg. In the case of Hak.ogg there is a box notifying that such a replacement could not be completed, and yet CommonsDelinker changed the link in the Wikipedia article. These changes to the Wikipedia article would've been fine had these files gotten their new names. --JorisvS (talk) 16:04, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
I initiated a rename of many ogg files (the list) after discussion here. They all seem to be unsuccessful. --Jarekt (talk) 02:32, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
So are you planning to do anything about all the links you've broken?--Kotniski (talk) 07:21, 27 August 2010 (UTC)
You can use the query interface. Siebrand 10:08, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Looking at this a bit more, it seems (if I'm right) that what's happened is as follows: a commons admin (Jarekt) has misread the documentation for the universal replace command, and assumed it includes renaming the files concerned (when in fact it doesn't do that). So what clearly needs to be done is: (a) Jarek, please swiftly rename the files by what ever means, so the red links get mended; (b) someone add a bright warning to the documentation to prevent the same misunderstanding being made again; (c) whoever programs the bot, make sure that in the future it rejects replace requests if the target file doesn't exist (I would say this is a pretty high-priority bug). Does that make sense? --Kotniski (talk) 12:41, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

I was quite sure I used this process in the past and it performed renames as well. O well I will rename them by hand. Or is there a bot that can do it faster? --Jarekt (talk) 13:36, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

✓ Done cleanup is finished. Please let me know if there are any other problems. --Jarekt (talk) 17:24, 27 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, but I'd still appreciate a reply from Siebrand or another bot programmer about how this problem can be prevented in the future (as per my suggested actions above).--Kotniski (talk) 11:43, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
Software is not a replacement for human error. Siebrand 22:59, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
But software can help prevent or mitigate human error, right? Would it be difficult to make this change? It seems pretty basic.--Kotniski (talk) 18:32, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Please give it a try; the software is in the Subversion repository for pywikipediabot. We will gladly accept high quality patches to CommonsDelinker. Siebrand 22:50, 30 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, thanks, you want someone else to spend ages learning the architecture of this bot, when someone who already knows it could presumably fix the problem in a few minutes? If you don't want to recode it, then can you at least update the documentation to stop similar misunderstandings?--Kotniski (talk) 07:07, 1 September 2010 (UTC)

On aug 22th 2010 an image has been removed from my page "Raniero da Ponza". Considering that I am a new entry in Wikipedia, I should be very glad to know the reasons of this removal.

- Robotje (talk) 14:59, 7 September 2010 (UTC)

Coats of arms of the Bundeswehr

Could your SieBot be so kind to undo changes in the Category:Coats of arms of the Bundeswehr. To some of the subcategories the bot added a "the" after the common "Coats of arms of". Example: Category name was Coats of arms of Staff Support Battalions (Bundeswehr) and became Coats of arms of the Staff Support Battalions (Bundeswehr). First it's kind of odd to add a the only to some of the subcategories hereby confusing to an unnecessary extent. I really like to the same simple scheme in that category. I.e: Coats of arms Staff Support Battalions (Bundeswehr) - without "the" and "of". Second, the "the" is - as far as I know - kind of uncommon and unneccessary in that place in English language, especially when the article "the" is used for non-English words. Adding a "the" seems to me so German (or Dutch). So I ask you kindly: Could your rebot redo that? --TUBS 08:47, 14 September 2010 (UTC)

Could you please explain...

The record shows you deleted File:Niagara Escarpment in Red.png because it was a dupe of File:Niagara Escarpment map.png. But doesn't the description of File:Niagara Escarpment map.png say it is based on File:Niagara Escarpment in Red.png? Doesn't respecting the original uploader's remaining {{Gfdl}} rights require keeping the original on which our current map is based? Geo Swan (talk) 09:15, 14 September 2010 (UTC)
