John Brown image[edit]

Hello, I noticed you seem to have cropped an uploaded a new version of the file I had earlier uploaded of John Brown. In terms of format, shouldn't your cropped image simply be uploaded over the existing image, so that the original notation appears? MarmadukePercy (talk) 00:52, 17 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not to familiar with all wikipedia standards, so please let me know if I need to correct. I thought your original image could still be valuable in wikipedia articles, perhaps on articles related to historical photography or articles on the photographer, so I simply uploaded an alternative cropped version and linked the two images in the 'other versions' section. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

It seems that the first image did derive from the second one, but there are some variations and I'm troubled by the fact that the png has comparably little information about it. The first one was scanned by me from a book that gave all source information, such as Library of Congress ID, place it was taken, and the photographer. So maybe that information can just be transferred to the png, but outright deletion seems like a bad idea until that's resolved. Postdlf (talk) 02:24, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed! If your image is unique and has specific importance beyond the version I uploaded, please remove the 'delete' and 'superceded' tag. Also, please add 'other versions' to both images. And, if you have additional information about the photographer and/or date of image, please make sure to include that information within both files. Thanks in advance. File:JFKennedyHalloweenLaugh1963.jpg[edit]

Hi. I reverted you changing File:JFKennedyHalloweenLaugh1963.jpg to a tightly cropped version of the central figures. The full original version of the photo shows many details of the Presidential office at that time which some may find of interest and cannot be seen in your crop. If you find a cropped version useful, I'd suggest uploading it under a different file name (with links so that the two versions are visible from each other) instead of replacing the existing version. Thanks. Cheers, Infrogmation (talk) 01:59, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. If you upload a new version of a file (a bigger one, with better colours etc.), you should change the source. Getty.edu is the source of first version of this picture. Emperor Pedro II of Brazil[edit]

Scewing, could you help me out again? The colored photo of Emperor Pedro II of Brazil that you colorized is almost perfect. There are 2 small issues (I believe):
1) His left hand color does not match his face or his other hand which is hidden beneath his cloth.
2) A small piece of the photo at the top was cut off. Could you fix it?
Also, could you colorize another photo? This one:
If you accept my request, know that there is no hurry. Once you're done with both, I'll add both to the article. Thanks again. Kind regards, --Lecen (talk) 00:02, 8 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I know nothing about graphics[edit]

but would love to know how to make signitures like you. How do you do it? Chesdovi (talk) 18:38, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No Problem! I'm definitely not a pro or anything, just do it as a hobby. When I find a decent image of a signature on a website, I save it to my computer, and use a free image editor called GIMP to edit it. I usually crop the image down to only the signature, then use the scale tool to enlarge it to about 4000px in width. Then, I do one or more of the following (with the end goal to get a solid b&w image of only the signature): Use the Level tool to adjust the black/white levels to make the signature stand out from the background; Use the fuzzy select tool to select only the signature, then invert the selection and 'delete' the background stuff so only the signature is left; use the desaturate tool to convert the image to b&w; use Image>Mode>Indexed and convert the image to (1-bit) black & white. Once the image is tweaked so you only have a nice b&w signature with no background stuff, I save the file as a .bmp. Then I open up the .bmp image in a free program called CR8tracer and do a File>Save As .svg Then I upload the .svg file to Commons. This may sound like a lot of steps, but a lot of the GIMP editing depends on how clean the signature is. Let me know if this helps! Scewing (talk) 22:26, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Gallica high resolution[edit]

Hi Scewing,
Thanks for compliments, I'm happy if you enjoy my recent Gallica contributions.
The secret is (shortly):
Open the file, then use the magnifying glass at left, then, the one at right, as often as possible, until the maximum size.
Switch off the little zoom screen with the (-) button at left.
Select the part you want to upload and simply "print screen".
Upload all the parts of the picture, then solve carefully the puzzle in any design software (GIMP works very well).
But beware of stitching errors ! Any mistake, even for only one pixel, is visible.
As for me, I stitch at 800%, it is a good way to see every pixel.
Crop the result as needed, ten minutes in oven, and serve hot with a good french wine.
I hope it will help. Don't hesitate to ask me if you need translations for your researchs in the BNF website !
Cheers from Paris, --Jebulon (talk) 21:39, 21 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:Napoleon Hill signature.svg[edit]

Hello. I was wondering about this file and it's source/creation. It is obviously computer-generated but is this made from an actual pen-signed piece? Just curious how it was generated and how accurate it is to Hill's actual signature. Thanks. Nice contributions to the site, BTW. G90025 (talk) 11:46, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the original source is a victim of link rot, but from what I can remember, I believe it's from the cover of his 1st edition of 'Think and Grow Rich' Scewing (talk) 02:53, 6 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R1 Announcement[edit]

Hey, um, Scewing, I don't suppose you saved this as a lossless version while you were doing the restoration? Jebulon was asking for some more cleanup, and I'd rather start with your restoration, but I've seen the quality issues that happen when an image is saved too often sequentially as JPEG. Adam Cuerden (talk) 14:11, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately I've deleted all working copies. I really should save lossless versions to wikipedia. Best of luck if you decide to move forward with an improved restoration! Scewing (talk) 15:51, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. Tell me, what was your source? The JPEG uploaded, or did you have working copies in a lossless form up to the last JPEG? And what quality did you save as? I'd rather not work with a thrice-JPEG-converted image, but if it's all the same anyway... Because, frankly, you did good work, and I really don't want to take the FP credit from you if I can justify it. Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:20, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I started with this jpg scan from Bonham's. FP credit is absolutely irrelevant to me, I'd much rather have a beautifully retouched picture available to all :) Scewing (talk) 18:43, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement[edit]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open![edit]

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Thanks for uploading File:Lai Afong, Chinese Women, c1875.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Thanks, what software do you use? I tried it in Inkscape, but I pause when tracing it so it doesn't appear as a continuous line. The equivalent of lifting the pen in forgery. How long did it take you to do? Have you considered a career in forgery?
Took me about 4 minutes. I'm definitely not a pro or anything, just do it as a hobby. I wanted to simply add the category Category:Hand-colored photographs of Japan , and I didn't mean to remove any categories. I need to be more careful when using this tool. My apologies. Scewing (talk) 15:29, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I am sorry, that I got angry. Would you be so kind to restore the removed categories? Thanks in advance. Catfisheye (talk) 20:13, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I think all the removed categories have been restored. Again, my apologies. Cheers! Scewing (talk) 21:23, 22 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Alexander Graham Bell, first transcontinental phone call, 25 Jan 1915.jpg.

Thank you.

And also:

I removed {{PD-old-70}}, {{PD-old}} or similar templates from the files whose authors who died less then 70 years ago. Now the files have no license and unless it is fixed will be deleted in a week. If you know of other reason why those files are in public domain please feel free to add a new license template and alert me and I will remove {{No license}} tag. If you have any questions please check my FAQ or contact me on my talk page. Yours sincerely, Jarekt (talk) 12:18, 9 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2015 is open![edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2015 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Scewing,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2015 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

i would like to use this image on my fishing blog i have recently started. i am a little confused as to how i can use it. i understand it is public domain in the US but my blog would be hosted in Japan (i think, since i am living in japan). also, if i can use it freely how am i supposed to attribute it? will a link to the file on wikimedia suffice, or a link to the relevant wikipedia page it is featured on? please help me out. thank you — Preceding unsigned comment was added by 153.130.228.171 (talk) 15:15, 31 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, use freely! It's public domain in Japan as well. No attribution is needed, but many people enjoy a link like this, so they can trace the image back to its origin. Best of luck with your blog. Scewing (talk) 03:33, 1 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I removed your entry File:Nogawa Bronzeware, Kyoto by Otabichio c1885.jpg as it is not your own work. The challenge is for photographers submitting photos they took themselves. -- Colin (talk) 12:00, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No problem, but quick question: Why, in your examples, do you show this photo and this photo, which are both historical photographs and not uploaded by the original photographers? Based on those examples, I assumed that you allowed original submissions of historical photographs. If that's not the case, I'd remove these examples to eliminate confusion. Personally speaking, I think it would add value to your photo challenge to include historically significant public domain images. Cheers! Scewing (talk) 16:45, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I agree the b&w one could be misleading, the other less obviously so based on the actual image. I'll think about a substitute. As for the challenge scope, the idea is based on other photo challenges on the web, which encourage photographers to get their camera out and try new things. It is also increasingly attracting newbie photographers to Commons. I think including other people's work would really be a different sort of forum with a different audience. There's no reason why someone couldn't set up a different challenge forum for historical photos, for artwork, for diagrams, for video, etc. I guess the thing about the own-work criteria is that one has to improve one's skills if one wants to do well at it, and we are attracting that creative talent to Commons. -- Colin (talk) 17:59, 14 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Schopenhauer photo[edit]

Regarding this photo of Schopenhauer https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Arthur_Schopenhauer_by_J_Sch%C3%A4fer,_1859b.jpg, which was uploaded by you, I will copy and paste what I wrote on its discussion page:

'The date of this photo is given as being March 1859. However, two things lead me to doubt this.

First of all, the Encyclopedia Britannica - a reliable source if anything is - identifies the photo as being from 1855. See https://www.britannica.com/biography/Arthur-Schopenhauer

Secondly, this painting of Schopenhauer https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Schopenhauer.jpg is from 1855, according to that page itself and also according to the article on Schopenhauer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Schopenhauer), and is almost identical to the photo.

I therefore suggest that the photo's date is either changed to 1855 or else we remove reference to the date altogether, so as to get rid of the false information that the photo is from March 1859.'

Matthew Fennell (talk) 01:30, 1 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, the very title of the photo might be a problem because it has 1859 in its title. And there is another version of the photo here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Arthur_Schopenhauer_by_J_Sch%C3%A4fer,_1859b.jpg

Important message for file movers[edit]

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
