Ron Mueck[edit]

I have to say I don't consider it as a derivative work because it's included in a larger environment (the architecture around). The banderole is covering less than 50% of the picture. There's that kind of free right in France: when a copyrighted work is freely presented in a public place, a photo of the work included in the environment is free when the copyrighted work is covering a certain percentage of the photo. But I can understand my work can be judged as a derivative work since: 1) I don't know the exact percentage considered by this French law, 2) this law might not exist elsewhere. --TwoWings (jraf) * Wanna talk? ;-) 19:08, 20 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In what way was this image a copyright violation? Aldaron (talk) 13:38, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Because the graphics on the game pieces are copyrighted. Postdlf (talk) 18:43, 4 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, "photo Metropolitan" doesn't mean the met owns the photo. It just took a photo, because the drawing was displayed at the Met during an exhibition. Actually, I should have found out the owner earlier: as mentionned in the article linked to the photo : the exhibition is called “Raphael to Renoir: Drawings From the Collection of Jean Bonna”--Zolo (talk) 06:31, 15 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Military "dog tags"[edit]

Postdlf, I saw the image you created Dog Tags.jpg - with the background info you entered, stating that "M" stood for "Methodist." I'm working on the article, "United States military chaplain symbols" (which has expanded to include all religious symbols, including the indications on military IDs/dog tags) -- but I can't see that such an abbreviation was used. There seems to have been only C (Catholic), P (Protestant), H (Hebrew -- used for someone Jewish), X ("other" - a religion other than the first three), and Y (no religious preference or a choice not to include a religion). Can you tell me where you found your info? I want to include the photo, but only if I can change the text to indicate the use of "M." Thanks! NearTheZoo (talk) 18:28, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was an assumption; the tags were my grandfather's, and that was my grandparents' religion. Otherwise I have no idea what the M means, unless it just means "male", but then the tags would be lacking a religion symbol. Postdlf (talk) 19:28, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this response! As far as I have learned (and you can see everything I know in the article I mentioned) an M was never used for Methodist -- but one never knows. There was a P for Protestant, but when specific Christian denominations began to be used (after WWII), the word was spelled out, so it would have been METHODIST, in caps. Evidently, many servicemen chose not to include their religions on the tags, for various reasons. If I learn what the M stood for, I'll let you know! Again - thanks. NearTheZoo (talk) 23:22, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Found the answer! S (for small), M (for medium), and L (for large) were letters added to many dog tags to show the size of the gas mask that person needed. Evidently, it was added more on Marine Corps tags than on others -- but this must be the answer. If you don't mind, could you change this information on the description that goes with the image, or would you like me to do that?
Thanks again -- NearTheZoo (talk) 23:30, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the info; I corrected the image description. Postdlf (talk) 00:05, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You for the Wikipedia Pictures[edit]

Hello, My name is Duane Hurst and I recently made a free (non-commercial) English web site to share information with people. I added links to your Wikipedia/Wikimedia freeware picture (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Saint_Andrew,_Barbados_037.jpg and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Ameiva_fuscata_near_Coulibistrie_River-a01.jpg). I also gave credit to you on my web pages for your work. Thank you for sharing with the public. My website is:

http://www.freeenglishsite.com/

I add pictures such as yours to one of the following major sections of my site: 1. World section - contains information and over 10,000 images of every world country and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/index.htm

2. USA section - contains information and images of every USA state and territory. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/world/usa/index.htm

3. English section - "Mel and Wes" lessons in conversation format. Stories are located in various USA states and world countries such as China, England, Germany, Japan, Mexico and Thailand. Each lesson has many slang terms and idioms, which I link to my Slang Dictionary. This eventually will have over 5,000 terms. Currently, it has about 3,000 slang and idioms. I regularly add new lessons and slang terms. Link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/lessons/index.htm Slang Dictionary link at: http://www.freeenglishsite.com/english/slang/Eslang_a.htm

Prior to retirement, I taught English at several private and public universities in the United States.

Please share this free site with your friends. I hope all will enjoy the pictures and find the English information useful. Sincerely,  Duane Hurst in Utah, USA

Yeah, thanks, I've been watching that with amazement at his continuing obstinacy. Someone who is so plainly unable to understand basic copyright concepts, or unable to see that his interpretation is flatly at odds with Commons practice and policy, or willing to take a step back when everyone else tells him he is completely wrong, really shouldn't be participating here. Particularly if they've never even uploaded anything but are just fighting with those who have. Postdlf (talk) 00:51, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Belated, but done! What do you think? -FASTILY 06:48, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Could be more clear. I think "partial copy" or something like that would be a better header, as "derivative" is a more loaded word that implies more than just copying but transformation of some kind instead. Judging from the recent confusion, I think it needs to state something like this: "When a file copies only part of a copyrighted work, its copyright status is determined only by what it has copied. If it only copied uncopyrightable elements, then the file is also uncopyrightable. In other words, we judge the copyright status of a file only by what the file itself contains, not by the status of other content the original source contained that was not copied by the file."

I think the two book cover images are bad examples as most people would probably view the front covers of books as independent works, rather than considering them as partial ones just because they are physically attached to the spine and back cover (or remainder of the dust jacket, not that that matters). Postdlf (talk) 21:24, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I like how that sounds; would you like to do the honors and add that bit in? I'll replace the book images when I (or anybody else) come across better examples. Regards, FASTILY 23:21, 24 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Done. I think including one of the book covers is fine now, actually. I suppose as one editor was confused by that, another may someday be too. Postdlf (talk) 21:51, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Artist Mumbiram's emails to OTRS[edit]

Dear Postdlf

thank you for your timely intervention. Artist Mumbiram will send an email allowing me to upload the concerning images of paintings to be used under Creative Commens Share Alike . I have a few questions to which I request your clarification.

1. Can all the images be included in one email ? Or does it take seperate emails / ticketnummers ?

2. If we mention on our talk page that artist Mumbiram, the copyright owner, has written to OTRS such an email and received a ticket number can I request and expect that the images will not be deleted till the teams at OTRS decide on Artist Mumbiram's emails granting permission ?

3. I have come to notice that one such image for wich Artist Mumbiram had written an email of permission nearly one year ago, has wrongfully gotten deleted. The ticket number is: [Ticket#: 2017070310017094]. How can I get this image undeleted ?

Thank you for your help. --Kusum Bhagavat (talk) 09:03, 7 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
