Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]

[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Hi there. I saw your upload File:BU West sign.JPG and File:BU West station sign.JPG. However IMO these are copyrighted and hence you cannot release your work under a free license. Are these signs exempted from copyright laws? --Ben.MQ (talk) 22:55, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

MBTA station signs - and the maps on them - consist of geometric shapes and text, with no real attempt for geographic accuracy. Thus, they don't meet the threshold of originality for copyright. (Compare, for example, the New York City subway map, which is (unusually for rapid transit) geographically accurate and formed of complex shapes, and thus copyrighted.)

I should also note that this is one of only two BU West signs that remains uncopyrighted; six other signs contain artworks, for which I am currently talking to the artist for future CC licencing and use on Commons. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:43, 19 June 2011 (UTC)

Hi

No, what i discussed was metro maps in general (not as an element of a photography). What i said is that exemplars of metro maps are copyrighted material. It's clearly an original graphical representation of information. And at least it's publicly claimed as copyrighted material by some nation wide European railroad companies. It's something well known, discussed in the press and by lawiers. BUT. It can be redrawn, with your own way of doing it, and published with a free license. If it's not a direct copy, if it's your way of representing the information, it's ok.

As an element of a photography, it's more complex : there's no COM:FOP in USA. But here, it's not just a map, it's dealing with a photo of a sign (or the correct english word is poster ? public notice ?). What remains to be discussed is the importance of this sign on which there's the maps. The main problem is that the sign is the main element of the photography, that the photo is centered on it, and other elements are just surrounding it. Hence it's a photo of the sign, and it's a copyvio.--Lilyu (talk) 21:57, 5 July 2011 (UTC)

To answer your question, the usual English word would indeed be 'sign'.

I understand that the MBTA claims copyright on that map. However, I do not believe that it is actually copyrightable under US law (where picture was taken and uploaded from). In my opinion, it consists of nothing but a variation of public domain elements - lines, circles, and curves; I can even dredge up a citation for them being standard curves. Thus, the maps would not meet threshold of originality and not be viable for copyright protection.

In any case, it's not a huge deal; the maps are old (Silver Line has been changed since the map was put up, and 4 Green Line stops eliminated) so it couldn't be used as a commercial map, so I suspect it at minimum is eligible for fair use. I'm more just worried about the proliferation of such pictures on Commons.

I usually stop discussing when people raise the "threshold of originality" argument on Commons. People over use it. Remember that there are complex compositions of simple geometric forms that are copyrighted. Based on copyright records, the argument that "oh if i look at each elements of it, i find simple shapes, so it's not copyrightable" is not an efficient way to discriminate creativity.

The only truth about it is that only a judge can decide if something is original enough to be copyrighted or not. All we can do is take it into consideration and stay cautious. So, something like this is not a simple square or circle, and if a company publicly claim copyright on it, we should'nt directly host it. But we can create another map that originally represent the same information in its own way (not a copy-paste), and publish it with a free license. A clean svg with clear authorship and a free license : OK. A bad photo showing a blurry sign made by someone else with claims of copyrighted material : Why bother ? --Lilyu (talk) 02:41, 6 July 2011 (UTC)

The reason is for the sign to illustrate the Wikipedia article. There's a lot of MBTA stations where all you possibly have to illustrate is the station sign - there's not much in the way of platforms. I don't need the map there; it just happens to be on the station signs. (The others at BU West have artwork, for which I'm currently in contact with the artist). Hi Pi, thanks for that rename. There is someone there who takes a lot of photos, some very beautiful, but renames them with such egregious abandon that I find myself muttering over the species that I have no acquaintance with and no references for. About renaming

Why do you rename File:Голодомор.jpg? Filename in non-English language is not a reason fore renaming. Commons is international project.--Anatoliy (talk) 21:00, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Language was not the issue here. The existing filename was just plain generic, while the new description actually says something about the picture. If you want to suggest a more descriptive filename in Russian I will gladly move it to that. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 21:16, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

3 levels of shading?

I just discovered your cache of special photos and graphics, and enjoyed browsing them. I did re-discover an anomaly I had noticed while reading an article on the MBTA commuter rail. The map File:Mbta district.svg has a description implying 3 levels of shading (original MTA district, original MBTA district, and 1999 MBTA district), but I only see 2 levels of shading on the map. It was correct the way it was, as File:Gainsborough - Hayman - Portrait of a Gentleman.jpg; note the dual crediting at the Museum's page for the painting.
