First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)
Pay attention to copyright
Image:Zoebell07.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added may soon be deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please replace the copyvio tag with and have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you disagree that the file is a copyright violation for any other reason, please replace the copyvio tag with a regular deletion request.

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Non-commercial

On Image talk:Lisakudrowvascol.jpg, you stated that the image would not be used for commercial purposes. Wikimedia policy prohibits this restriction. In order for an image to be acceptably licensed, it must not prohibit commercial use. However, this is not a problem in this particular incidence because the copyright owner licensed it under the GFDL which does not include a commercial use prohibition. --68.148.89.74 19:07, 5 June 2007 (UTC)

Do you have any permission for that (A mail by the uploader on flickr or an ORTS ticket)? I'm asking, because "All rights reseved" means that we are not allowed to use it on commons.
--D-Kuru 23:40, 9 June 2007 (UTC)

Regarding the mail you send to that author:
GFDL enables you to make commercial use of a photograph. So please leave out the line saying a picture would not be used for commercial purposes when asking people for a license. That is misleading and could be a cause for invalidity of the license later on. --chris 09:58, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Translation:
I haven't seen the link to the image talk page.
I know that GDFL pictures are free content pictures. However, because I don't know how good you're at commons (and the licence policy), I can not assume that you know what you're doing (Now I know that you know what you're doning, but I know this, because we've talked). There are many All rights reseved-pictures which get uploaded without any permission at all.
--D-Kuru 21:38, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
Sorry for writing german, but I've confounded you're userpage with another ^^
As you can see from my edit on the imagepage of Image:Melorahardinla.jpg I try to prevent you from reviewed-fail.
I would recomend that you create your own template in your userspace (User:Nehrams2020/whatever) to make it more clear. The content of that picture should be the permission of the author on flickr.
I can help you if you don't know how to create a template. If you need help I can help you after the 14th of June, because I have a very important exam on that day.

License requests

Hi Nehrams2020.

Having read your most recently posted licensing request it's perfect as far as I can judge it. :-) --chris 11:24, 11 June 2007 (UTC)

Hi! If you load up Images from Flickr, please drop down a flickrreview below it. Thanks, __ ABF __ 18:24, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

Image permissions

I noticed that you place the receipt of permission on image talk pages. It might also be good to forward on correspondence to OTRS (mailto:permissions-commons@wikimedia.org) so that we have a more 'solid' verification of permission. Keep up the good work :) riana_dzasta 04:12, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

I second riana_dzasta's request, specifically with respect to every image in your gallery marked "User:FlickreviewR/reviewed-error", "Flickr images needing human review, "User:FlickreviewR/reviewed-fail", or "Possibly unfree Flickr images reviewed by FlickreviewR". And for every image from Flickr that you want to upload to Commons but has an inappropriate license, please ask first, forward the permission to OTRS, and only after you have received approval may you upload to Commons. This way, the Wikimedia Foundation won't get sued about an image that is awaiting approval at OTRS. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 06:31, 16 July 2007 (UTC)
I had already deleted the e-mails before I had received th first message on this. But any pictures that I pursue in the future will have the e-mail forward for permissions. --Nehrams2020 20:17, 21 July 2007 (UTC)
You could, of course, request duplicate copies of those emails you had already deleted.   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 05:01, 22 July 2007 (UTC)
I'll see if I can get around to doing that in mid-August, but I'm not sure that every single Flickr user will still be able to respond back, but I'm sure the majority will and then I'll forward them as I get them. --Nehrams2020 17:46, 24 July 2007 (UTC)
So the status of Image:Lisakudrowvascol.jpg is?Geni 14:01, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
My apologies, I've been spending too much of my attention on just Wikipedia recently so I haven't checked up on this. I have several large tests this week at school, but I will focus on sending out e-mails this next weekend. Sorry for the long wait. --Nehrams2020 07:44, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Flickr image permissions

Hi, you commented on my page a while back about the author permissions for several Flickr images that I got permission to use on Wikipedia. Although I don't have the copy of the e-mails, I discovered that I didn't delete the Flickr messages themselves, but just the e-mails. Since the messages say the same thing, can I take a screenshot of the message and attach it in an e-mail that I send to OTRS? --Nehrams2020 01:40, 8 October 2007 (UTC)[1]

You can do the same in text via the following method:
 1. Open a FlickrMail message you received.
 2. Click the "SEND A REPLY" Button.
 3. Copy everything after the "Subject:" line and before the unlabeled reply text body box, especially including the "On <date>,
 4. Paste that into an email to OTRS.
I suggest you use both methods in your next email to OTRS, asking whether they prefer one or both methods.
Please keep this conversation here.
Thanks!   — Jeff G. (talk|contribs) 02:03, 8 October 2007 (UTC)

File:TomCruise08Toronto.jpg‎

Thanks for adding the OTRS ticket. I was wondering if you could check OTRS and see if it received the ten e-mails I sent a couple days ago with more permission for a lot of images. I had sent them before, but I guess they didn't go through (probably because I sent so many). Some of the e-mails have permission for 10 images, others only 5. I just want to see if they are there since the Tom Cruise one went through okay. If they are there I'm assuming nobody wants to do them since there are so many. If you could just take a look, I'd appreciate it. --Nehrams2020 (talk) 01:14, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

The system says you were sent a reply at 12:32 on Monday. Did you get it? Stifle (talk) 09:55, 8 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi Nehrams2020, would you please forward this conversation to OTRS so the permission can be verified? Also, it would probably be better not to publicly disclose private e-mail unless the other party explicitly agrees. Thanks and best regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 20:36, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

No, thanks, no need for any more actions on your part. Permissions is somewhat overflowed at the moment, so unfortunately tickets can take some time to be worked on. However, please understand that putting private conversation on public talk pages is not a course of action I'd recommend. Normally admins don't delete OTRS pending images. They will first have a word with an OTRS volunteer to check whether there is a permission. So you don't have to put the permission on the talk page, just leave a not on the description page itself saying I contacted the creator, permission was sent to OTRS at [date]. That should be sufficient. Thanks and regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 21:01, 21 January 2009 (UTC)
Yes, there is a queue holding all permissions mails. There are no strict guidlines which tickets should be worked on first. That's why complicated tickets tend to take longer, while other tickets are worked on in a few days. Completion time for a request depends pretty much on the request. Sometimes people send mails saying which image they created and what license they want to use to publish the image. Those normally take about 5 minutes or less, as you just put the ticket number on the description page and send a thank you to the customer. Then there's the complete opposite, tickets not saying anything. Those often go like Hi, I uploaded an image to Wikipedia, but now it's gone. I was told it needs a free license, so I agree to that. Will you please restore it? Then you first need to find out which image they are actually talking about, where they got it from and what the licensing of the image is. Sometimes there are also problematic tickets when people claim they have the rights to the image and you are pretty sure they don't. Those tend to stay open a very long time as nobody really likes to say We don't believe you. and still keep it friendly. What you should always take care of when relaying permissions: Make sure the timeline of the conversation remains intact. Nothing is more annoying than a 2MB e-mail with replies from about 5 people scattered all over it. It takes a long time to find out who actually is the copyright holder and whether he agreed to the given license. Also always make sure that the adress of the copyright holder can be associated with his mails. Often we have some more questions to the copyright holder and it's really generating a lot of unneccessary workload when we first have to make inquiries and do research about the adress. BTW, I'd also recommend using e-mail templates like Commons:Email templates. That gives creators a good idea of what they are actually doing when giving out a certain license. And about your ticket in particular: GFDL does have an attribution requirement, so you would better have used CC-by-sa. Also note, that all GFDL licensed content that was not originally published here is not eligible for migration to CC-by-sa as proposed by the WMF (see m:Licensing update). Regards, -- ChrisiPK (Talk|Contribs) 21:22, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Image permissions

I am also writing every now and then for permissions to external sources. One of the worst jobs ever! :-) Thanks for removing the missed tag. Anyway - you are doing great job. Thank you. Zureks (talk) 22:31, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

OTRS tickets

Hi Nehrams! I wanted to thank you again for your contribution. I am amazed.

 • It does not matter if the file is located on Wiki or Commons. The permission is given for the specific image, so the OTRS ticket can be moved with it as the file is moved from one location to the other.
 • If the original file on Flickr is released under Commons-compatible license (CC-BY or CC-BY-SA) then I have seen cases where the file is simply uploaded to Commons with no request for permission given at all. The logic is that since the file is already free then there is no need to ask additionally for a permission - provided that the use is according to the license specified. Just like that. So if the source is given (link to Flick) the author is given and the license is the same we can just upload the images straight to Commons. And this is why the tools like Flickr uploader [2] exist.

Kind regards --Zureks (talk) 12:33, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

Images

Well, I just edit some links, whereas you must send tons of emails back and forth... Anyways, there is not that much I (or anyone else) can do to prevent as such deletion of images. OTRS ticket is quite a powerful statement, but it might not be enough is some cases. Tough life :-) See you around, Aloha --Zureks (talk) 22:05, 25 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:FrankCaliendoDec2008.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). The Streamy Awards

hello Nehrams2020,

I don't know if you know this Flick photo set, but there are tons of quality images for a lot of personalities. I think it would be better to get back the maximum of images rather than to choose only one per person, but I don't know a tool to automate the process (with Commonist, we don't have the Flickr metadata). Okki (talk) 03:48, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

OTRS vs. Flickrreview

We currently have about 90 e-mails waiting to be answered on the English language Commons permission OTRS. 10% of them are yours. As a favor (due to the backlog, and the nature of flickr-mail), I was wondering if you could change your approach when contacting flickr users. Could you, when requesting permission, simply ask them to change the license on the Flickr image page to either CC-BY or CC-BY-SA? This way, a bot or admin or trusted user can verify the permission (and we have way more bots/admins/trusted users than OTRS volunteers). Additionally, it doesn't require special OTRS membership to verify the permission, when anyone can publicly check the Flickr image page for license information. And you would no longer need to send in Flickr mail to OTRS (my selfish goal in contacting you), if the image passes Flickrreview. Just a kind suggestion. Feel free to ignore it, if it doesn't work for you :P (but please take it under consideration). Thanks!-Andrew c (talk) 00:32, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

If you want some default request text for asking Flickr users to change the license, I can provide that, as I myself have done that numerous times (and many times successfully!) -Andrew c (talk) 00:34, 4 August 2009 (UTC)

Hello, Nehrams2020!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

I conferred with a couple of other OTRS members who all thought since it was in a "by the way" section, it wasn't as clear as we need it. If you could have the author be a bit more clear on his declaration it would allow us to finish the process. Thank you. --Admrboltz (talk) 00:11, 16 September 2009 (UTC)

I saw the uploads of images from the 2009 Oscars that you made. I want to upload a couple from the same set that have Miley Cyrus. How did you upload them if the tag on Flickr says "all rights reserved"? I see the copyright status you uploaded it with is quite different, how did you get permission and how could I get permission? James Cameron

Hi, Nehrams2020. I saw your comment on the File:JamesCameronStarDec09.jpg talk page. While I agree that it's better if image is somewhat cropped, I would like to have an original file as well, as it is on the Flickr. Because, the licenses are not the same, and you said that you have a permission of the author to publish it here (under different license), I was wondering if we can upload an original file as well. --Lošmi (talk) 03:01, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Ok. Thanks for the explanation. Btw, I saw your gallery, and it's really impressive for how many images you have provided permission to be published on Commons under the CC license. Cheers! --Lošmi (talk) 22:01, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

Flickr license

Hello

Since I am fairly new on the photoside of Wikipedia/media I am not sure how it works with those licenses. You uploaded File:JamesCameronDec09.jpg to Wikimedia with a license that says derivative works are allowed, while the original photo on flickr has a license that says this isn't allowed. You did explain the author sent you permission, but do you ask that for each picture seperately? Or can all pictures of this author on Wikimedia commons now be cropped? Since I uploaded File:James Cameron star ceremony.jpg before I noticed the limiting license on Flickr. I would appreciate it if you could help. Thank you. LeeGer (talk) 18:21, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Ok, your answer clears up some questions. Thank you. Now I can crop some images that don't have the ideal size. One more question; is there any category or page with pictures that need to be cropped? Or can I just keep doing what I think is best? And happy uploading to you!LeeGer (talk) 00:39, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Your advice about some pictures please

Hello, since you have more experience with copyright issues than me, I would like your opinion on this. A few minutes ago I cropped this picture using this picture as the original which says the author is Karl-Martin Pold. But then I discover, in the category of Bud Spencer, that there is an almost identical picture, oploaded by the same user, but now with himself as the author. I found that a bit strange and I wondered if the licenses used are valid? LeeGer (talk) 00:45, 29 March 2010 (UTC)

Museums in San Diego

[7] and elsewhere: why would you remove Category:Museums in San Diego, California from a picture of a museum in San Diego? I figure I'd ask rather than simply revert, since you seem to have done this to quite a few images, and presumably had a reason. - Jmabel ! talk 15:44, 29 October 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for contacting me. I removed the categories from the Old Town images as the Old Town San Diego State Historic Park category is contained within the main Museums in San Diego, California category. Leaving the main category in there causes the images to show up twice, once in the main category and again in the sub-category. Please let me know if this makes sense. I've changed categories for hundreds of San Diego images recently and I'm sure I've made mistakes (fortunately I've caught some quickly). I'm also creating new sub-categories to help remove the large number of random images located in the main categories and improve the searching process for readers. --Happy editing! Nehrams2020 (talkcontrib) 00:23, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
Well, I guess what doesn't make sense then is that Category:Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is in Museums in San Diego, California category. The park is not a museum: it's a site containing multiple museums, stores, etc. It's like putting Category:Times Square in Category:Theaters in New York City. - Jmabel ! talk 02:10, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

Flickr not-changed license

Hello.

I would like to ask you a question concerning a maybe slightly specific case with Flickr images. I found great pictures and the photgrapher is willing to give me written permission for them, but would not like to change the license on the site. Is it possible that just a written permission would do? If yes, how do I have to upload the picture - under "pictures from Flickr", or under "from somewhere else"? What should the written permisssion say and wher should I post it? I am adressing this to you because you were suggested as an expert with Flickr uploads. Thank you. --SlipknotRlZZ (talk) 20:19, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Hello again. I decided not to start a new topic about this since it is related to Flickr permissions again. So I received the written permission by email and I forwarded that email to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org. Do I have to wait for a reply from them, or can I start uploading the images? Thank you very much, SlipknotRlZZ (talk) 07:25, 18 December 2010 (UTC)

How can I forward a FlickMail to permissions-commons@wikimedia.org to confirm the permission. By the way, I want to know how you ask the authors on Flickr for giving permission? Hoangquan hientrang (talk) 04:47, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Flickr permissions and OTRS

Is this a new change? I was unaware of it. It makes sense of course. It is far more straightforward.--Chaser (talk) 15:42, 21 February 2011 (UTC)

File:CarlaCollins1999.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Pay attention to copyright
File:HalleBerryHSFeb07.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation.

Warning sign
This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:HalleBerryHSFeb07.jpg. You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.
